Lol whoever did it just removed Sandy and the debris. Anyway, I think I'm beginning to see the relevance of your signature... ;)

Changing the subject, I'm just about to do the washing up after supper. And I'm torn between listening to Gravity or Inception (again). As I said here earlier, I've been having very vivid dreams recently - did any of you find that after watching Inception?? Sometimes the dreams are unpleasantly weird. Other times, like last night especially, they're quite nice...

Acknowledging the change of subject, maybe Inception triggered something in your imagination. Or maybe it's just that now that it's in the foreground, you're paying attention to what you're dreaming more. Unlike weird Jason, I dream a lot. And they're full fledged epics in themselves. Like with a proper narrative and everything. I do, unfortunately, forget them soon after I wake. And now, I've forgotten what my point was.

Great GotG covers! :D

You don't dream?? Wow, you should count yourself lucky. Sometimes I'd rather not dream myself. But then (like last night) you get a dream which makes you think it might just be worth the bad ones. ;)

I had to go Inception. It's just so good. Not that Gravity isn't good, but nothing can beat Inception.

Haha yeah maybe it did. You're right, I think I'm paying more attention to them now. Last nights' was nice. I don't think I ever have full fledged epics... Just random events all connected to each other in random ways.

Poor Martin Sheen and his big head. But honestly, his big head's probably the only reason people'd ever see the film, Kal Penn doesn't really scream B.O. success does he?

It's not that I never ever dream, it's just rare. And when I do I usually wake up knowing that I dreamed, but I don't remember the dream. Unless it was a bad dream, those tend to stick. :(

I think you and I should find ourselves a PASIV Device (split it 50-50, they're pricey on eBay) and go on some epic dream adventures together. Because clearly, I am missing out.

I just started getting into the habbit that every time I have a dream I write it down in my notebook. The same notebook that I took notes for on how I wanted to assemble my massive 30+min MoS suite. The last dream I had was with Clair Underwood. She was my acting coach at a film school / university somewhere here in the US. And Miles Teller was in it as well, although I don't know how he factored into it

When I manage to save up more than three little grubby coins, totally.

I did that once, keeping a dream journal when I was little. The problem with that is that anyone could read it and conclude some pretty weird things about you. I'm sure my parents would've had to arrange a 'cleansing ritual' for me if they'd ever read it. :)
Miles was prolly still drumming out his solo while Claire was delivering a lecture on how to act like a proper First Lady.

First, Exodus got the worst artworks, so I found a picture on deviantart and created this

The FYC CD got a nice cover and i could make an even better one, but i m waiting for it to pop up before I m doing anything else (fingers crossed!)

Then, "Marnie" always got horrible covers too, so I tried to obtain something better, tell me what you think about it!

These are fantastic, Sully!
I'm especially delighted by the wonderful font your chose for the album text.
And I also don't think they're oversaturated. You can however fix that in a few clicks in GIMP, no big deal.

Jesus, that's a lot of choices. I've seen this image used many times, but you're the first to take it and turn it 90. I like it. I think it would also work really well if you flipped it 180, as if she's falling downwards and away from earth. You should try it.

I think I already posted it here, but I still remember dreaming about Trent Reznor one night, he was going to sue me over my Gone Girl covers. He even came by my house and was knocking frantically at my front door. scary stuff lol

Thank you! It's the logo from the very first teaser poster, which I always liked a little better than what they used for the final poster (it did work well in the film's opening credits however).

It looks good. Very well-crafted. Although I would also suggest in using the original font types. I know it's tough and sometimes even impossible to find the original fonts. I can provide you with source material of you like...?

For me it's either as true to the original as possible or completely customized, that's when I tend to let my creativity go wild and do something entirely different. Much like Jay does it in his Disney covers, completely ditching the official logos.

Thanks, guys. Yeah, the new look is better. I've had that logo in my mind for a couple of years, but never really had an opportunity to use it (apart from on the spine of my back cover for my custom complete soundtrack to Cars 2). And I was just mucking around with the gradient fill tool and stumbled across the '3D' look.

I'm having trouble finding a large enough png logo for Gravity. The one I used on my recent covers had the letters fairly close together, but the more regular logo has the letters spaced further apart, like on tintacle's, heidl's, Helix's, and Jason's covers. Where did you guys find yours?

As I said on your blog - I like this cover probably because of the contrast of colors. You've got the field of pink flowers, the yellow sun in the background, and the dark, almost ominous clouds at the top. Your cover is especially beautiful compared to the real thing (), where Horton looks like some sort of shady drug dealer and the Mayor looks surprised to have been photographed. I daresay your cover is actually a lot better than the real thing! You probably put a lot more work into it, at least. :p

So far I think your blog looks awesome, and that logo is a clever idea. It's nice to have somewhere where I can browse through only your work. :)

Can someone please make a custom cover for Steven Spielberg's Lincoln movie from 2012? Besides the original art that was based on the poster, I haven't seen a custom for it anywhere. And it's like they only decided to release one poster for it...

Started listening to both the FYC and the original score, hoping there's an expanded score out there.

It looks like I'll be attempting a fairly big dump of recent covers I've been putting together. I'll start with three customs for a new soundtrack which has really got me under its creepy spell this past week: Disasterpeace's original score for It Follows. And I've got one for Paul Leonard-Morgan's Dredd, one of the most propulsive scores of the past few years. I really smile at the cult love this film and score has got over the years. It was such a great experience seeing this one in 3-D at the cinema when it released! I think I'll be telling my kids about it! Haha!

Hi again. I've recently made a matching Game of Thrones cover set that i wanted to share with you guys. I made 7 seasons to be future proof for a while. Not 100% happy with it yet, but here they are regardless. Might update later.
Oh, i found the sigils here, if you're interested: House Sigils - Album on Imgur (http://imgur.com/a/k2JVk)

That's a GREAT set of GoT! What an awesome way to show off the houses sigils.
However, I would vary the paper texture a bit. Maybe flip or rotate it every now and then to make it look like it's a real paperpack case.

By the way, what do you guys think of my new blog? I've tried to customise it to a certain degree and I've finally brushed up a logo for it.

Welcome to the party, Sulley! I added you to my blogroll.

So I'm working on some complex projects.
Mainly involving scanning an entire movie. Twice.

The first time I scan the movie, I take the average samples of each and every single frame.
It gets squished to an average color, forming a palette for the frame.
Then it all gets laid out in a sequential line.

Example: Mouline Rouge! (2001)
Average color of each frame, lined up frame after frame.
)
Look how colorful the film is!

Now that I got that, scan the movie's audio.
Grabbing a waveform that I can use.
I convert the total audio down to mono. Surround sound or even stereo is not important.
I just need a powerful waveform.

But I can do better than that. I can grade the transparency so it's not completely solid.
It'll fade from the center out, so the center is the real power of the waveform (as it should be).

Better.

Now I can mix the two if I want for something creative...

And now for an appropriate screenshot from the movie...
Cropped black bars, so I have 1920x800 resoluton.

And this is the only thing I can think when I have all 3 elements
1920x1080 resolution

My monitor is small, 1280x1024 so I made one that fits my monitor as a wallpaper.

The waveform is more prominent in this version.

But, I want more.
Something more creative.
I don't have any photo editors installed any more.
Those were archived from when I did that a year or two ago.

I want to do something like have the colored/filled waveform close to 85% transparent overlayed the movie poster some how.
Make it subtle.
More screenshots of the movie can be taken for more options.
Or it could work on other posters.

The idea is to use the colored/filled waveform as part of the soundtrack poster.

But rather the end credits/film-edit.
Moulin Rouge could use a bluray rip update.

This technique can be applied to other soundtracks too, to illustrate the nature of the film vs the soundtrack.
The soundtrack/sessions/etc can be joined as a single image, then scanned to create a waveform of the music itself, not just the movie audio.

Anyone have ideas or want to play with it?

It would be really cool to stretch the waveform long enough to wrap in a complete circle, as if it were printed to disc or vinyl, no?

Well, there's your waveform wrapped around a circle:

I've boosted the colours a bit, but otherwise it's very rough and only a quick mockup. Can be done in Photoshop withing a matter of seconds really. Also, the bigger the source file, the better the quality in the end – obviously. This one here only used the 1920px file, which resulted in these jaggy lines – especially the almost horizontal and almost vertical ones. But yeah, can be done easily :)

Alternatively, the full waveform:

That's a tricky one.

I like how you put the title in the shadows. It's still identifiable. I would even go so far to put the "OST" term in the figure's shadow as well. Anybody knows what it says anyway. But maybe expand it over the whole width (one letter per box?)

The artist's name worries me a bit, it's so long and looks a bit jammed down there. Have you tried to wrap it?

The most elegant solution to my nitpickings however would be to expand the whole image. The box-patterned background would qualify just perfect for it. Wanna give it a try? Or should I?

Because of where she's placed and which direction that bahhhdy is facing, there should be little-to-no space behind her. There should be what's called "lead room" on the left side of the image, and no space behind here. It's like how you have a camera set up when interviewing someone. Thanks for the advice, but unfortunately it's a no-can-do situation. That's the full width of the image. So unless I crop off the space behind her and then squash the narrow strip that's left into a square, I can't do anything about it. :erm:

Even though the colour palette isn't the brightest?

I've reviewed my current script for it and found that most movies come out rather dark.
I added a tweak to it to get it more saturated, more brighter and more contrast to the whole movie.
Just so that after all the resize and blurring, the color pallete (bars) would be more colorful.

All current projects and future projects will start off with brighter and more colorful palletes.

Moulin Rogue! (2001) project was one of my first attempts and didn't want to want to change the colors as I wanted it to more accurately portray the film.

But since this is for Art Class, everything is game.

Inception...Cars 2

I can work on those.
Inception first, as I have the bluray.
Cars 2, I'd have to locate.

The screenshot thing detracts from the whole idea, imo
That's an idea for wallpapers and movie posters.
Separate from what I want for the cover albums.

Alternatively, the full waveform:

Okay, i played with it a little bit more and stumbled upon something quite interesting. I kept applying the same filter over and over again, and here's the result. This might work for something like Interstellar, hm?

These are excatly the type of creativity I'm looking for!

I hit "like" then "unlike" so I can "like" again.
I did that about a hundred times. ;)

These are wonderful!

This one here only used the 1920px file, which resulted in these jaggy lines especially the almost horizontal and almost vertical ones

I'm currently reviewing the software I'm using.

The color bars/pallete is done using avisynth and it fits within the dimensions of the movie you're doing this with.
Since I work with bluray remuxes, the dimensions are limited to 1920x1080.
Which, when you alter in ways that affect length, like wrapping, aliasing (jaggy lines) is very likely.
However, I believe there should be a way to get it to have wider dimensions.

The audio waveform is taken using a CLI program.
It has options to define custom resolutions, so I can work that, too.

The first one makes me think of doing the Sunshine (2007) movie to go with the John Murphy soundtrack.
The second one looks great for first-runs of any soundtrack.
The third one is indeed great for Interstellar or other movies like A Scanner Darkly (2006) or even Memento (2000).
The last one makes me think of the Mockingjay or a phoenix (X-Men Last Stand)

Today, I'll review what I can change and process Interstellar.
I'll process the audio from the film and then process the deluxe OST as a single image.
The film will give more spikes and variation in the waveform.
The OST will give a more static presentation.

Inception and Interstellar in the next few days after I fine-tune the software/scripts.

I couldn't resist doing a couple of these. The poster I've used below is the international poster, and is less cramped than the first (notice particularly Black Widow, Cap, and Iron Man). Also, Stark is in the front where he should be. Cap can be at the front for Civil War.

Looks great, Sulley! Any chance you could make one with equal credit for both Brian Tyler and Danny Elfman though?

For anyone who hasn't heard, Elfman has just finished recording over 60 minutes of score for this film (probably replacing about that much of Tyler's compositions).

Nice covers, Sulley! These should tide us over till we get the official cover... Elfman may be scoring a good portion of the music like amh mentioned, but as usual, the cover depends what material goes on the official release... so if most of Tyler's stuff makes the cut and Elfman's edits don't, the text on the art would say "Additional Music By Danny Elfman" like all the posters have right now.

Wow, that's unexpected. Source? Last I heard Elfman stated that he "adapted" Silvestri's theme, and was credited with "additional music".

Well the poster does credit him as writing "Additional Music," but it was actually Elfman's music editor who revealed just how much work Elfman had put into it:

Just finished one of the most intense & quick projects of my entire career. I was music editing - about an hour of music composed, recorded, mixed, conformed to new pix and delivered in 24 grueling days! I think I've earned a nap

Anyway, some die-hard Elfman fanatics were able to eliminate other projects on Danny's schedule and they've been talking about it incessantly over at FSM and JWFan for almost a week now.

That's not quite what i mean… The source dimensions are irrelevant. Heck, you could work with a crappy 300x200px video, because all you need is to get that one pixel (one colour) per frame. This then gets stretched up horizontally to get what you posted before. Let's assume 90 minutes long movie; you'll end up with 129600 pixels (90 minutes * 60 seconds * 24 frames) – one for each frame. So the final picture is 129600 pixels wide. Hight is again irrelevant, since you can stretch it up indefinitely. With a picture this large, you can twist it around a circle much better. Yes, you will still end up with jaggy lines, but you have a much bigger picture to work with where scaling down is an option.

There are quite a lot of ways to do it – but there are also quite a lot of ways to embed it in the website to begin with. It could be Flash, it could be a HTML5 canvas element, it could be coming in as a stream… First thing, i would look at the page source and search for .mp3 and similar. If nothing comes up (which is probable), there are a few handy extensions you could try; like DownThemAll (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/downthemall/) or DownloadHelper (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/video-downloadhelper/). (All this is assuming Firefox, but there are similar add-ons for Chrome.)

There's no guarantee it'll always work, of course. The most difficult ones (i dare say impossible ones) are flash-players that either embed the music file inside the .swf file, or that play a stream from somewhere else, which never gets cached. Then your only option is to capture it with a 3rd party program.

Wider dimensions can be obtained.
But probably not in the extreme dimensions of 129600 pixels.
That would crash the machine.

Each render of the color bars takes anywhere from 2-20 minutes (depending on system specs and SDD vs HDD vs USB 2.0 vs USB 3.0).

I've started adding a tweak to each script to make it brighter in color and brightness from the start.
The colors are more accurate now.

I've also started doing it in 4K resolutions.
3840x2160
The hieight is there for the benefit of already being resized for other projects.
I don't know what resize kernels Photoshop uses.
Avisynth has very customizable resize kernels.

I could try get something like 5760x renders. Or bigger.
It might crash. Or take infinitely longer.
But, I'd rather render with avisynh (source) since it'll be a cleaner render.

Both the color bars and waveforms can be rendered to any dimension.
Waveform is much faster however.
Since it's a 16bit mono wav file.

That really depends. If you manage to read the liner notes (I never do), you may be able to find out who did what.

Take Man of Steel for example.
I didn't know Junkie XL was involved in it apart from the drums sessions... or Steve Mazzaro. But from what we've got in the sessions tags, Junkie's only collaborated with Zimmer for about 5 cues for the movie. Andrew Kawczynski and Steve Mazzaro have only collab'd on one cue each.

So in this case, Hans Zimmer would obviously get his name on the cover as preference for the body of work that he did.

Wider dimensions can be obtained.
But probably not in the extreme dimensions of 129600 pixels.
That would crash the machine.

It did.
I just tried on a 2min trailer.

Going beyond: 1920*4 (7680) will likely end in a crash.

I tried 1920*5 (9600) and it didn't even register the script properly.
Probably out of memory issue since the dimensions are too drastic.
The script involved is quite complex, as in a lot of calls and internal resizers just to get the color square.

Trying out 7680x2160.
That should give the highest and richest render available.
Pretty sure that resizing with this should give decent results in any program.

The waveform, however, I need to test for maximum render.
That's the one that actually gives aliasing in any warping. It has more details than plain color bars.

Sullly. Inception is half done.
4K resolution of the color pallete to the film.
Will redo in highest resolution.

Inception 4K (original colors)

Inception 4K (tweaked colors)

 Never would have picked it for a brown movie.

Just need to convert the audio to get the waveform.

Here's Interstellar movie:

Color Pallete: 4K 3840x2160

Waveform: 4K 3840x2160

Combined: 4K 3840x2160
I still had to tweak this one even brighter and more saturated so it shows up when mixed with the waveform.

I'm thinking I should normalize the movie audio with RMS normalization so it's a lot more compressed.
The spikes are very dynamic. The differences between the loudest and quietest parts are too severe when layered with the waveform.

On its own, the color bars look nice.
But the waveform is too variable that it hides a lot of the colors.

I'll try RMS normalization so the power of the waveform increases.
I thought Peak normalization would be okay.

There's also the matter of extracting the colored waveform and putting it on an alpha channel so it's just the waveform.

Surrounding it with black also adds to the dull appearance.

I remember there was a trick I did to get it exact without using a brush or lasso to select/delete colors.
Deleting the black would delete any black in the color bars, as well.

Lasso selection isn't preferrable either, as it tends to feather a lot.
No matter what settings you use, you can't get the exact waveform. Edge details are lost.

I think I created waveforms with inverted transparency so I just overwrite the image with new transparent levels (where the black would go) and save it as a new image.
This way you get exact waveform and not messy, feathered job.

Well, these tags are misleading! Because, JXL was involved in more than the drums sessions. He co-wrote Zod's theme/Arcade/You Die Or I Do/Zod's Story and many other. That's why I think, he should have been credited with Zimmer as a co-composer, not just for additional music.

Saved in PNG format.

It's all new and stuff...

It was select "color range" on an inverted alpha PNG.
That way you can copy the color wave on black into the wave on alpha. :smrt:

Switched from bright side to timewarp template and transparency shows on the PNG.
Just save and do what you want with it.

:bearclap: Man those look awesome.

I just finished ripping picture assets from the Interstellar website.
I can't seem to find old archive before the site change a couple times, though.
There was a really nice, huge title of the film with transparency.
It was like 800x or so.

This is going to be fun. :)

I've been working on a "dark set" while you were dead.
I darkened the images and limited the hues to give a really dark atmosphere to the film.
The colors are mostly washed out.

Can you make one for Dark Ultron and Dark Logo?

Going through the trailers, too, to see what I can grab and darken.
I think some tweaking is needed though. Some shots come in too dark.

Well... they are adamantium for the most part... but then they get crushed.

But in DofP he has adamantium again so.... I don't know what happened between the two films. Maybe Magneto gave Wolverine a little help.

But even so, I do think that cover is from the first Wolverine movie. The style sure looks like it. I think if you replaced "The Wolverine" logo with "X-Men Origins: Wolverine", I'd definitely use that cover, Sulley.

The X-Men timeline is a mess. (http://imgur.com/a/B2M1n) There's virtually no continuity between films.

The most hilarious contradiction is in X-Men 3, Trask is a fat black guy (). In Days of Future Past, Trask is a short, white guy with glasses and is shot in the head ()30 years before X-Men 3.

The massive filesize of these waveforms is required so i can process them into large enough assets for further use. When you twist a picture around, it loses quality with each pass – and this is especially noticeable on thin lines such as the ones you find in these waves. Finally, once you have the twisted waveform, you still need to do something with them: Either have them centered like in my previews, but maybe you only wanna use parts of them.

As far as I'm concerned, X-Men are the only non-Disney Marvel films worth seeing. Forget Fantastic 4, Spider-Man, Ghost Rider and everyone else (Although I do love Blade). I'm going to go out on a limb (which isn't really risking anything here) and say you haven't seen any of the X-Men films. And if you haven't seen them by now, don't waste your time being that DoFP has been made. It completely omits all the other films (which is a good thing beause the time line is fucked up beyond repair - the only repair being DoFP). So if you're going to watch any of them, watch DoFP. It won't have as much meaning to you as it did for everyone else, because it pretty much healed everything, but it's still a good movie. The best in the franchise yet.

The Wolverine was pretty good, and I really enjoyed the second X-Men... the first one is too goofy and doesn't fit with the rest of the franchise.

Just read the Wikipedia page for X-Men 3; the movie's awful, but the general storyline is all right. Avoid X-Men Origins: Wolverine at all costs.

First Class and Days of Future Past are amazing films, both with mind-blowingly good scores.

This looks spectacular! I had to squint to see what was different and then I remembered the "assembe" line.

are the X-Men films worth seeing?

Yes.
For The Wolverine, watch the unrated version. There's more story to it and doesn't feel so rushed.

There's a scene after the end credits of:
X3 (vital before watching all the rest)
Origins: Wolverine
DOFP

I wasn't thinking. First Class is good. I hated The Wolverine. Why? I don't know. I just did not like it. Same as Origins and The last Stand. I'll agree X1 is a little goofy, but I still like it. And X2 is very good.

Watch the unrated Wolvie.
Look closely at his claws after he attacks at the funeral. There's blood and hair on them.

Origins is pretty bad. The last half really goes over the top.
Feels like it suffered over 100 rewrites.
It's partly good.

The trailer was awesome since it used Murphy's Sunshine OST.

I still don't know how Wolverine got his adamantium back for DOFP.
He must have had another injection in his hands.
Or maybe they just grew back slowly?

That's like 3 times we see his bone claws throughout the series.

According to rumors, The Wolverine 2 will take place between The Wolverine and DoFP. Maybe they'll bother to give us an explanation then.

My theory is that Magneto rearranged the placing of adamantium on his body to be back on his claws again.

He has bone because it's 2 years before he encounters Stryker to join Team X and get them adamantium.[COLOR="Silver"]

My theory is that Magneto rearranged the placing of adamantium on his body to be back on his claws again.

That would wreck his whole body as the adamantium replaced all his bones.
He would need to go in for a spa treatment to get them nice and shiny again.

They probably break into a facility to jack him all up on admantium.

Nah, it coats his bones. Remember the part in X-Men 2 where Stryker explains that adamantium hardens when it's not at a boiling temperature? They shot scalding adamtnium into Logan's body, which hardened and coated his bones.

Though like DAK says it doesn't even matter anymore since DoFP reset the clock.
