Huge apologies for my long absence - I have had a crazily busy first semester at university, but have one week left!

There has been so much incredible work here over the past few weeks I can't possibly begin to name them all. But a huge well done and thank you to everyone who has posted their work here. It's so much fun looking through all of it and finally getting caught up.

A shout-out to NewtonHoward for providing me with the textless version of the War Horse poster I requested a while back. It seems Tintacle used it before me, but thank you anyway!

And a shout-out to Heidl for answering my question ages ago about artificially sharpening low-res source images.

Could I possibly repeat my request for a textless version of this Source Code poster?

There isn't even much to it.

Sorry, pal. That's the best I could do:

There's just too much text cramped at the bottom third to use the content aware fill tool in Photoshop properly. Also, the text has a drop shadow and to make it even worse, someone decided to overlay the whole image with a diagonal lines texture.

I'm afraid you'll have to work with vignette and/or iris blur to mask my bad editing job. But you're gonna have to change the aspect ratio to square anyway. Maybe you can cut off the bad parts and center on JakeG's face?

Whatever you'll do... good luck! :)

Hmm, i can't access this file. It's giving me a "401 Authorization Required" error message.

Strange... I can still use this. xD
Anyway, it was the textless teaser poster of Mockingjay 2. Here (https://www.google.it/search?hl=it&biw=1280&bih=631&q=mockingjay+part+2+teaser+poster+textless&tbm=isch&tbs=simg:CAQSJgn5SOY9Xt_1xVhoSCxCwjKcIGgAMCxCOrv4I GgAMIUzLHTp7n0iE&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiP_c7Y9snJAhWFMBoKHVR4ANoQ2A4IGygB) are the same images in different resolution.
I thought that for the fourth movie should be used its teaser poster, instead of a photoshop of the third one :)

Oh yeah, that one. My original plan was to use this, but then i found the one with the ring in the back, and it made more sense to use it. You know, so all 4 feature both the mockingjay and the ring…

I see... Maybe it is possible to add the ring pieces to the mockingjay of the forth film...
In any case, I think you could make anyway the cover using the teaser poster for those who expect it. It doesn't hurt xD

Do what you want :) Mine was just an idea to keep both the mockingjay and the ring pieces, but I personally don't need it. I simply asked for a fourth-movie-version of the cover. :D That shouldn't be that difficult. Take the time you need!

Sweet Indy covers, tintacle!

@tintacle awesome work on Indiana Jones !

Thanks guys! :-D

Wow! I really love the idea of different background textures in you Indiana Jones covers tintacle, they are just beautiful. :D

Thanks, I'm glad you like them :-D

These look wonderful But! unfortunately! your dpi are to small. on your Indiana Jones covers.

Thanks :-D They should be at 326 ppi or dpi, that's how I made them in Photoshop.

But, seems like these guys already answered that, thanks Dave and Rotane ;)

I'm going to take a wild guess and say you've been using the thumbnails instead of downloading the full size cover ;)

Guys, the dpi-value says exactly as much about the quality of a file as tags of an mp3 file do: nothing. The ONLY important thing are the pixels. In this case, they are 1000x1000. Period.

You could have a 1000x1000 pixel image at 72dpi, or a 1000x1000 pixel image at 300dpi, or a 1000x1000 pixel image at 5000dpi the quality of all 3 would be exactly the same. You can change the dpi value around as much as you want (without scaling the image up/down in the process of course), and it won't affect the actual image at all.

If you want to know more, i suggest you read this article: http://daraskolnick.com/image-dpi-web/

tintacle, love the IJ covers! I've been using your version 3 for a long time but, switched to version one. Hadn't seen that it before and think it looks the best. I also switched to just a "Raiders" cover since I'm one of those who is partial to the original title (although in iTunes, my "sort as" album title is Indiana Jones 1 so that it sits right next to the others even thought the album title is Raiders...).

Can't wait to see you Star Wars covers! Hope you are doing some without the "episode" number to match the current marketing, I've actually started liking that more now. Your staggered release is going to be torture, I want to see them all now!

Thank you very much for the kind words :-D

I also prefer version 1 myself, I feel like they are more true to the Original Trilogy DVD releases.

Btw, how do you do that "sort as" for an album in iTunes? :)

A shout-out to NewtonHoward for providing me with the textless version of the War Horse poster I requested a while back. It seems Tintacle used it before me, but thank you anyway!

You snooze you lose my friend... Just kidding ;)

Seriously though, I really think you should have a go at it as well, would love to see what you can do with it Sulley :-D

Those are really great, tintacle. I think I prefer background #1, it somehow works best with the logo/image in terms of contrast and colour temperature.
I can see how much you took care to make everything look perfect, and they indeed are. I also understand your desire to post them in the biggest size possible, but I think it's a bit much for one single post. For a posting as long as this one, I'd suggest posting only thumbnails linking to the full size covers. Or at least make the links to the variations (Score, Complete, Soundtrack, etc...) text-only, so the sheer mass of covers doesn't bury one. But it's just an advice... I know you've established your specific way of posting covers, and I appreciate that.

Also, I can't wait for your Star Wars covers, man! I know it's gonna be fucking great.

Thank you very much Heidl, your words and suggestions are always mostly appreciated my friend :-D

I also prefer version 1 myself, like you said; "it somehow works best with the logo/image in terms of contrast and colour temperature." :-D

Yeah, the post was a bit too much. I've changed it so that the "big images" are thumbnails to the original sizes, so now it's not as bad, but it's still a pretty long post ;)

Also, glad you are excited for the Star Wars covers, you too FilmScore1978 :-D I will be posting Episode 1 a bit earlier than expected, since I'm going to be a bit too busy to do that tomorrow, hope you don't mind ;)

Btw, how do you do that "sort as" for an album in iTunes? :)

Just right click an album (if you are in album view), or highlight all the tracks of an album and then right click. Choose "Get Info" and then go to the "Sorting" tab.

Just put anything you want in the sort as box under album and it will use that to sort the album no matter what the title actually is.

Do the same thing for the other albums you wish to change to get them to appear in the order you wish. In my example I made Raiders IJ1, Temple IJ2, Crusade IJ3 and Crystal Skull IJ4.

This also has another benefit. The sort field is included in searches and album title searches so, if I search for an album with "Indiana" in the title, Raiders comes up in the search.

I "sort" all of my chronological film scores like that. Pirates, The Hobbit, LotR, Star Wars, Transformers....a bunch. It's great. Every now and then you don't need to though, like The Hunger Games. Just so happens that alphabetically, they're in order :p

Are we allowed to request here? ;) You all are gorgeous artists, and I can't art to save my life. I just downloaded the "expanded" scores of all the The Hunger Games movies from here, but the covers are inconsistent - the first says "complete", but the rest say "expanded". Does someone know of any (or are creative enough to make ones) that have different covers from the standard OSTs, but say complete? For example:

This one was included for Catching Fire:

It would be great if it could say "complete", and use a cover that wasn't used by the standard OST or album. I have several sources of the type of images I'm talking about, if they're needed.

Here's the first movie, which I love and says "complete":

Thanks in advance for any help!

I agree with you. There's also another thing to be changed: James Newton Howard didn't conducted the music of the Hunger Games saga. The covers of the Expanded Scores of CF and M-P1 should say "Music composed by JNH" instead of "Music composed & conducted by JNH".

Saves you manually having to change all of the sort fields. Of course, this doesn't work if you want albums to be in an order other than the release order (for example, Episodes 1-3 then 4-6 of Star Wars) but for most everything else this'll work just fine.

Let me know what you think.
Well the one with red lettering looks more threatening, warning or dangerous to me, but fits in color to the background
The greater contrast in the white lettering makes it more informal, in my opinion, but it also makes it easier to read.

I would say go with the white.

Does it look like a planet? Or should it look like one? This is still in progress, so any suggestion will be taken into consideration.

My intention was to have Kylo Ren chop up the Resistance logo (is it too faint?). To emphasize how far he is willing to go. I'm still not fully aware of the plot, so this is all more metaphorical, a mere symbolism. Don't take it too literally. It's not Star Wars: The Fruit Ninja Awakens ;)

I know, and I can see your POV, but (to me personally) the end results is lacking. I don't know... mmmh... maybe... put some of the smaller titles across the bike, in between the wheel and lights? It's not like you're blocking view of anything spectacularly important.

What about trying to put the 'CMPS' title up top, 'music by' at the bottom, and the full M:I-RN titles across the bike at the same angle near the wheels?
You could try and make it look nicer when slanted, but I think it's going to look weird no matter what you do. Does that make sense?
You could put it up straight or a 90 degree angle, but 45 degrees or a similar angle will look weird in this case.

Wow, you done it again, tintacle! I really like this cover, especially how the pods pop out of the frame, gives the whole cover a (literal) new dimension!

Thank you! :-D I used a poster for the 3D release of The Phantom Menace and thought I would make similar ones for the rest of the series.

I saw The Phantom Menace in the cinema in 3D and it was glorious! Unfortunately they canceled the others for a 3D release. Not that I'm a fan of 3D, but it was a chance to see Star Wars on the big screen again.

Another great job, tintacle!

I would be curious to see the logo from versions 4/6 used in some of the others, just to see how it looked. Maybe you tried it and it just doesn't work, IDK. Specifically, I'd like to see the new style logo in your version 5s and version 3s. For version 3 I'd keep the title Star Wars where it is but change it to the black with yellow outline and use the new font style for the subtitle without the episode number. Again, I'm just curious to see how it would look so, by no means am I criticizing your current work.

Oh don't worry about me, just having a giggle to myself. I'll admit I didn't see the resistance logo until you pointed it out, so it might be too faint. Or you could keep it the way it is, so that it represents a little easter egg for those who take a closer look. It's honestly personal preference when it comes down to these things.

As for the sphere, to me it doesn't represent a planet so much as a star. It reminds me heavily of the binary sunset scene from "A New Hope", which is great because it adds an extra layer of depth to the piece: Ren cutting down the dawn of a new era and eradicating the new hope. At least, that's how I see it. Cheesy, right?

I don't think the logos from V4/6 works on all of them, but I added them to V3 and V5 as you requested, and even though I still prefer the "original" logos it definately gives them a different look.

I've added them to the original posts, here: Thread 90457

The "ES" was actually behind the Slave I so that's why it got lost a bit. But, after a lot of testing back and forth between in front/behind, I've come to the conclusion; you're right, it works better with the Slave I behind the logo.
I've replaced them in the original post here: Thread 90457

All of this! We definitely need the tintacle treatment for SPECTRE or all 24 of the films (in the same vein as the Star Wars covers), but that'll be overkill. Still, I would definitely like to see SPECTRE covers.

- Good research is half the battle. Take your time to find good looking and fitting fonts. Font design is probably the most important thing of all. Try making font only covers for practice. It's fun and you can you can be creative infinitely.
- Use only striking images. Not every image deserves to be the front cover of a soundtrack album
- Don't ever use film stills. They look blurry and cheap (unless they had a really good DoP). Stick to promotian material and fan art as much as possible
- Don't use drop shadows on light backgrounds. Try to find other solutions to make text visible and readable.
- Try to make every custom cover something special. Don't just slap OMPS and Music By somewhere on there. Try to come up with something new, be creative amd inventive. There are no rules, no limitations! Isn't that great?
- At the same time feel free to "borrow" good ideas from other designers. It's flattering after all :) just give credit if you can (the same goes for fan art).
- Love what you do. If you love your own work, chances are that others will as well.
- And finally don't take everything I've said here too literally. It's just one one of many opinions.

This is the best advice Ive read so far regarding cover design.

---------- Post added at 03:47 AM ---------- Previous post was at 03:40 AM ----------

I was very inspired by one of SonicAdventure's covers for his Deluxe Edition of The Bourne Supremacy, so I thought I would make similar ones for the other movies.

Interesting. IMO, my cover for Supremacy wasnt my strongest. I actually hate what I did. What you did, is better. A lot... except for 'Ultimatum': Deluxe Edition obscures a part of Damon's head. Would it be bigger, itd work. For that reason, I didnt include 'Deluxe Edition' and moved it to the Inlay.

Now, I know that Sonic hasn't made Deluxe Editions for The Bourne Identity or The Bourne Legacy, hopefully one day he will ;),
but because the movies are so closely connected (at least the first three), I think the covers should be a matching set.

Identity will be done at some point, dont know when. Legacy will be done once I have the sessions ;)

I'm having difficulty somewhat making the 'music composed and' part pop up from the various mountain colors in the ESB cover... Suggestions any one? No matter what I contour or stroke it with, no matter what color combinations, it remains fairly unreadable. Plus I don't want to oversize the letters (you'll be able to read it then obviously, but I don't want it too big because it will draw attention from the artwork).

An easy tactic is to fade a dark color (usually black) from the bottom up to about 1/4 or 1/3 of the image. Then set it to a lower opacity such as 50%.

I think the trick in this case is to edit the background image instead of the text. Jason's absolutely right, however considering the overall image I'd recommend a bright fade instead of a dark.

()

Also, while examining the source image I wondered why don't you move the image up a bit? It'd give the bottom text a little more space. I also added a white drop shadow (fairly big: 250px, 50% opacity) beneath the text and painted out a few tiny stains in the source image.

I love it when you guys start talking technique, I learn something new every time!

I know, right? Gives me the tingles in all the good places.

Anyways, I thought I might share some covers I've been working on for quite a while. The downside of hearing all of the great advice spouted in this forum is that it makes you second-guess yourself. "Oh, now that he mentioned it, maybe I should've done this fade to black, or left out that drop shadow, or maybe moved the background this way instead of that...". It's stressful! Needless to say, there was a great deal of back and forth going on with these covers, a fair number of revisions too. There's even a couple that I'm not going to upload because I just don't think I have the skill required to pull them off yet, plus my modus operandi as of now is pretty firmly in minimalism. Maybe someday I'll come back to this one and see how far I've progressed. For now, here's my Christmas covers for a somewhat Christmasy score: The Golden Compass by Alexandre Desplat.

Well, a great deal of this movie is set in the tundras of Svalbard, it's got talking polar bears, magic, witches, familiars, and a lot of snow. So, not exactly a Christmas movie, but close enough. What surprised me the most about this project was the lack of promotional material for the film, at least compared to the blockbusters of today. It might be relatively forgotten now, but "The Golden Compass" had a lot of fanfare and hype surrounding its release; New Line Cinema intended it to be a trilogy to rival "The Lord Of The Rings". Now, that obviously didn't happen, but I expected a bit more than like, 2 posters and some character posters. Surely 2007 wasn't THAT long ago, right? Anyways, why even do custom covers for this one? The OST cover is actually pretty decent. I mean, its got a little girl riding a goddamn polar bear. In armour! Like jeez, this girl's got more balls than me! I guess I was bummed that the titular Golden Compass was nowhere to be found. Sure, it was on the back cover and CD (which is actually pretty clever), but who uses CDs nowadays anyway? So, I wanted a cover that at least featured a golden compass for the film "The Golden Compass". Hey, I've got simple tastes.

So that's where the first cover comes from. A simple showcase for the alethiometer (the titular golden compass). Good, work done...except this cover completely loses any shade of blue and white, which for a film set largely in the tundra and snow-capped mountains seemed like such a waste. Hence why I really like the compromise of the second cover. Basically it's just the OST cover with the golden compass (plus better font, at least in my opinion). The best of both worlds. So now I'm done, right?

Nope. heidl had to go and recommend that newbies try to make text-only covers to practice their font skills. heidl is a smart guy, so it would be good to listen to his advice, but I don't like working with fonts. I really suck at choosing good ones. I try to use whatever the logo font is most of the time. But I know the only way to learn is to challenge yourself, so I made a third cover. And then I went back and changed the font to the second cover to a font different from the main logo.

So there you have it. I'm sorry for the essay again, but this set is quite special to me not just because it's the most time I've spent making covers for a single soundtrack, but also how much I've learnt making them. About fonts, transparencies, shadows, and the clone tool (try to find where I had to edit out intrusive logos, I don't think you'll be able to spot it!). Plus, the whole thing is at the very least a form of catharsis for me, so feel to ignore everything I said and focus on the (mostly) pretty covers. Merry Christmas!

Very nice work. :) The first one is my favorite. I've looked them all over and I can't see any clone tool spots. So work well done! :D My ONLY suggestion is that on v2 perhaps move the text at the top down a TINY bit. Basically put it half way between the top of the logo and the top of the image. But that is a tiny nit-pick. You're off to a great start. :)

I could understand for the time when the original came out, yes. Most people didn't care and they released soundtracks on vinyl and cassette.
But now in the modern age, a great soundtrack cover is just as important as its contents. :)

Yeah okay, I got ya. It's just that what I thought when I first saw the cover I was like "aw, no artwork?" but then I immediately figured they were doing a "back to basics" thing like they did with the theatrical posters and the movie itself. So... I like it. :)

No.

I wasn't sure if you were referring to my quoting Jason's Interstellar covers, or just making a random comment about people quoting large amounts of covers, or what? I purposefully edited my quote so the covers were small and in a line, so if you were referring to me I don't know why.

Have I offended you recently or something? You've seemed rather stand-offish towards me lately.

There's a particular theme or motif Williams used only once(!) in The Phantom Menace, and it wasn't even featured on the official OST album. You have to download the expanded score for this. On the beginning of the track "The Podracer" there's a beautiful, bittersweet strings motif which plays when Anakin fires up his podracer engine for the first time. I remember that back in 1999 we speculated about the possible forshadowing Williams may have practised with that track. Yet it never ever came up again in the following episodes. Only the likes of John Williams can afford to drop such a small rough diamond.

Anyway, that was just a little anecdote you guys made me remember...

As The Force Awakens premiere is getting closer (4 bloody days, guys!!) I'm almost done with my custom covers series. Some recent additions:

Really cool cover, but the logo is somewhat off the "Force Awakens" bit in particular. The verticals should really be vertical here, otherwise it looks like as if the letters are toppling over to the left.

Thanks, you really took a look at it, didn't ya? ;) I fixed it and will use the revised version on my blog.

Really good work! You nailed it with the font choice. The drop shadow behind it is also a perfect match to the logo. Too bad the source image of the first is a bit blurry. It doesn't live up to all your efforts.

On the second one I'd get rid of the top text completely. Imho it's not necessary and clashes a bit with the background. Just write "Original Soundtrack by..." at the bottom and you're set :)

While there are no recording sessions (to my knowledge), there are quite a few extended/complete scores to chose from. Most of which are fanmade, of course, but some of them are quite excellent.

These are the ones i've got:
- Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace (Ultimate Edition)
- Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones (The Extended Edition)
- Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (The Extended Edition)
- Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope (The Complete Score)
- Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (Imperial Audiophile Edition 2012)
- Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi (ABC Salvage Edition 2009*)

* The "Original Trilogy ABC Salvage Edition 2009" contains all 3 films, but i prefer the other ones i listed.

Thanks, you really took a look at it, didn't ya? ;) I fixed it and will use the revised version on my blog.
Aw man, it's a bloody curse, let me tell you! I wish i wouldn't notice these things all the time…

Really dig the others in your "little" series, btw!

I see... Maybe it is possible to add the ring pieces to the mockingjay of the forth film...
In any case, I think you could make anyway the cover using the teaser poster for those who expect it. It doesn't hurt xD

Any chance of getting versions for Star Wars of these posters, tintacle? I think they'd go really well with the group you already have. As you can see, the photo ones are based off of the original painted posters, which I thought was pretty cool (they were from the Limited Edition DVD that came with the theatrical cuts in 2006). If not, no worries!

A cover I made for an album in the works. I realize this is on the verge of being offensive, especially with what it has to do with. But Tojo just looks so cool. ;)

The top reads "From Tojo"

Edit: Hideki Tojo was bald too, so that makes him the official Japanese Walter White. ;)

Nice. While it's better than the red, I don't think it's as good as it can be. Is there any way to polish it up a bit more? I don't know how to say it....it just looks off. And I don't mean to offend, I'm just extremely picky (clearly :p). And also, you missed the armor around her neck. That's supposed to be black, too. As is her bow.

I only imagine recolouring this suite to black and my hand already start to hurt. What a pain in the ass job.

---------------------

The following TFA cover is based on a fan poster from deviantArt. I had to manually remove the dA watermark (btw, Lockdown, I've seen your PN, I'll see what I can do...), which was pretty hard to be honest. However I ended up only using the drawn hands and parts of the lightsaber hilt. The background image's just a recoloured version of the original Return of the Jedi cover. And I added my own version of the crossguard lightsaber, a remake of the RotJ logo and also the little round thing which is totally no moon!

This might be my own favourite SW cover so far. Probably because the original Return of the Jedi cover is my favourite cover artwork ever.

James P.Sullivan I might be wrong so anyone reading this feel free to correct me but these fan versions come pretty damn close to being the best setup you'll find (for the original trilogy that is).
ABC's Original Trilogy Salvage Edition (https://mega.nz/#!oZ9myCSI!S7VBVD31Y6v2XRlKHabEajHfUhsy1TTAlYMO7FQSJsQ) and Empire Strikes Back Audiophile Edition -also by ABC- (https://mega.nz/#!gBEHkbCL!QUl5826BjAO0X0renpsnKaHmebciWqd5rZ_3auMZ8eE).
The Original Trilogy Salvage Edition (obviously) has all three but you're waaaay better off getting the Audiophile Edition if you want the ultimate Empire Strikes Back listening experience.

The skin-tone (and her hair) is already quite saturated, and the black armour only strengthens this. So i wouln't further push them. But you can't bring them back either, because the background is so vibrant and dominant. Dunno how you could improve it…

Of course, some of the highlights on her armour could be a bit more orange, but this is going to be a pain to get right. Hmm, maybe some other day ;)

- Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (Imperial Audiophile Edition 2012)
- Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi (ABC Salvage Edition 2009*)

For me, I have these (as far as extended/complete scores goes):

- The Phantom Menace - ggctuk2005's complete re-edited soundtrack
- Attack of the Clones - Faleel's expanded edit
- Revenge of the Sith - thejok3rrules's most complete edit
- Star Wars: A New Hope - RCA/Victor official complete album (personally, I don't have any issues with the sound on this one. Empire and Jedi however...)
- Star Wars: A New Hope - beatho's complete score
- The Empire Strikes Back - Imperial Audiophile Edition 2012
- The Empire Strikes Back - beatho's complete score

All I'm missing is Return of the Jedi.

Interesting. Are they avaible here on Shrine or somewhere else?

For PT scores, these are my personal favorites -

ggctuk2005's TPM: Thread 124468
Faleel's AOTC: Thread 123086
thejok3rrules ROTS: Thread 141937

OT, I just go for the RCA/Victor/Sony CD for ANH (as mentioned, I have no problems listening to this one as opposed to Empire or Jedi's official cds from RCA), the anthology box set or beatho's complete score and Empire is the Imperial Audiphile edition. I have yet to find a "Jedi" that I've really liked. I can't listen to the RCA CD and the only one that gets a repeated listening on my iTunes, is the anthology for "Jedi". Any suggestions for more expanded scores for all six films are welcome.

Listen to "The Forest Battle" from ABC's Salvage Edition of Jedi, and you're never going back to any other edition. It's incredible how crisp and clear certain instruments sound.

Tbh... I even prefer the ABC Salvage Edition of Empire over the Imperial Audiophile Edition, for the sake of similarity in sound and volume between all three Original Trilogy soundtracks.

Hey tintacle, GREAT WORK on your cover set so far, I'm especially loving the "vehicle" series (as shown above).
I have one small request for Ep IV though. Could you possibly make another version like this (COMPS for me), with the new logo, and perhaps an image of the X-Wing in the Death Star trenches, such as THIS () one, THIS () one, or THIS (http://images-cdn.moviepilot.com/images/c_limit,h_658,w_1327/t_mp_quality/supqoc46vjofen0gzbng/the-concept-art-that-inspired-star-wars-the-force-awakens-711067.jpg) one (although this one is McQuarrie art and not really in line with your other covers)?

Personally I feel it's the more important "vehicle-related action piece" of the movie and it would suit a cover great :)
