I think Tintacle changed it on purpose.
After all TESB is Vader's episode above all.
I think it's fitting and Tintacle, ANOTHER massive win! Holy cow. When are you going to stop being so awesome? Never? Good! ;-)

Exactly heidl, I thought the Vader art would fit a lot better for Empire. In Hope he wasn't even the main villain, Tarkin was.
...Tintacle, ANOTHER massive win! Holy cow. When are you going to stop being so awesome? Never?
Good! ;-)
Haha! :-D I don't think I will ever quit making covers, I love it too much, and Star Wars does have a special place in my heart.

FANTASTIC!
Because the contrast between the two are so vast; the cover would really POP once you take it out of the box :-D

Awesome BvS covers nolomax! These three are my favorites.
I can't help but make the comparison between the first two and my Ralph McQuarrie series ;)

This is ASTONISHING!
I love the way one would unfold it, a triangle within a triangle ;)
Also, the cover itself reminds of the poster for A Clockwork Orange. The triangle design makes it unique and stand out among the other covers in the collection.
Nice work, my friend! :-D

Actually I could've sworn it was the other way around originally? The Stormtrooper for ANH and Vader for ESB?
What region is your set from?
EDIT: I checked blu-ray.com and it's true. So weird... :)

That fucking Stormtrooper is the reason I didn't buy the steelbook of ESB (my favorite Star Wars film). It makes absolutely no sense. It should've been Boba Fett, or maybe if they didn't decide to go with profiles, Han Solo in carbonite would've worked.

Can't argue with that. One of the most easily recognisable Star Wars characters, for absolutely clueless and die hard fans alike, but Boba Fett would've been the easier pick by far. I concur.

Captain America: Civil War
by Henry Jackman
Box:
Not to sound like a party pooper, but the "MUSIC BY HENRY JACKMAN" seems very difficult to make out. Dark blue and black are not good contrasting colours. I know this is meant to be the "box" for the cover art though, so your mileage may vary.

What's with the expired gif?
Anyways...today, I'm not just sharing a new custom cover. I will also be showing you two things; how important, tedious and soul-crushing text placement can be, and how sometimes dreams don't come true.
Today I present: "Waterworld" by James Newton Howard.
Unlike some of my other projects, which had little or no custom artwork made for them before, there's been quite a few "Waterworld" covers floating around both on the Shrine and out in the vast depths of the internet. Quite a few of them are pretty good, utilizing the new Blu-Ray covers and some other miscellaneous posters. The OST cover is...okay. I like the colours and the contrast, but dislike Kevin Costner's big ass face taking up 3/4 of the frame. Pretty much all of the alternate covers and official artwork utilize a blue palette. Makes sense, it is called "Waterworld", after all. However, a while ago there was a custom cover posted in this very thread of a distinctive Drew Struzan poster with a very different red, orange and yellow colour scheme. Talk about going against the grain! It was really eye-catching, as most Drew Struzan posters go. It looked great. The custom cover was alright too, but the resolution was poor, the image seemed blurry somehow and the font type, colour, placement just didn't work for me. Now, we here at "The Official Custom Covers Forum" don't own any sort of monopoly on cover ideas, certain images, etc. We're more the type to suggest improvements if we see something askew than to take a cover and slightly improve it ourselves. Not only that, I had made a few covers by this point and had gotten most of the basics down-pat (or so I thought). So I wanted to do something different, and use this cover as an opportunity to try some more advanced techniques like overlay, hue adjustment, etc.
Things didn't go well.
Many a smart people on this thread have said it before and allow me to reiterate after my experiences here: work with the best - and highest quality - material that you can find. That goes without saying that there is some material, no matter how flashy, poignant or jaw-droppingly gorgeous, that is of a low enough quality that it just won't work for a custom cover. This is unfortunately one of those cases. After cropping the poster into a square and getting rid of unnecessary framing, I was left with a square image less than 500x500. That's smaller than most people make their thumbnails on here! I guess I was so enamored with the poster design that I forged on ahead, even though the more I worked on it the more problems were becoming apparent, and the more headaches I was getting. Smaller source material really limits what you can do creatively in GIMP or Photoshop. But the biggest problem arose when it came to laying down text. You don't really realize until you try, but many fonts get...weird at smaller sizes. The font I used, Trajan, is tried and tested: on many a cover it looks divine, crisp and clean while still maintaining an air of elegance. But at sizes below 15 it starts to warp and lose its defining features. Even if you don't know a thing about fonts you can tell something is off.
This led me to trying a bunch of different fonts, sizes and placements. I even changed the logo a bunch of times, eventually forgoing the official one and using my own, since Trajan was close enough that you can't tell the difference. I would make a few adjustments, than leave it for a week or two. For my other covers, I usually get my 'Eureka!' moment when I come back after a good long rest. A couple of days, maybe a week.
For "Waterworld"? Try two months.
I was just never satisfied with my text and logo placement. Or the size. Or the intensity of the layers. While the cover got a little better over time, progress slowed until eventually, over the past week, I found that my only changes were text placement, and I was going back and forth without trying anything new. It was at that point, despite the fact that the cover isn't quite up to scratch, that I knew I had to stop. I almost gave up at a point two weeks ago, but alas, the sunk cost fallacy is a strong motivator indeed. Final count? 23 covers: some with minor text changes, some different colours and overlay layouts.
In a way, there is actually a third lesson to be learnt from all this; sometimes, in our line of work, things just don't work out. Even if you have a wonderful idea in your head, after toiling away it might not come out the way you want to. Or maybe it comes out perfectly, but isn't quite how you imagined. Heck, it's possible I'm being hard on myself, and this cover is actually totally fine. In whatever case, these rants of mine go on way too long. Apologies to the two or three people reading these! Let this cover be a testament to the vital importance of setting your filter to "Large" when using Google Images.
Tell me which one you think was best, or rather, which one was the least awful of the lot. Only available in 495x495 because...that's the size I was left with and don't want to stretch the image. Hope you enjoy!

shouldn't count dooku be the one on episode II's artwork instead of yoda? or grievous on episode 2 and darth vader (still as anakin with red eyes) for episode 3.
i mean, it's all villains for the rest.

Saw that someone made a cover for The Road Within (which is basically the english version of Vincent Will Meer) and I had one in the works awhile back but never came back to it. Here it is now! Anyway, it's good to be back!
Since most of my deadlines have been and gone, I think I may finally have time to catch up on what I've been missing here over the last few weeks since I went away to Iceland and came back in at the deep end of the world of assignments and deadlines. I've got at least 10 pages here to go through, and I can't wait to see what you've all been cooking up in my absence!

For my first cover post in well over a month, I present an alternate cover for the score to one of the best films released in the last
decade year:
J.J. Abrams' and John Williams' brilliant

SULLEY, Great to see you back in business! You were dearly missed.
Also, one of the best scores if you ask me. I'm listening to it 24/7 these days.
And with that, seeing as it's now 5:00AM, I'm off to bed.
Goodnight folks! :)
Working til the bitter end.

SORRY TO INTERRUPT THE THREAD BUT THE NEWTON BROTHERS SAW THE COVER I MADE FOR THEIR SCORE FOR THE ROAD WITHIN AND THEY RETWEETED ME

Wow Miss Junkie, that's fantastic! I know that feeling quite well, as I've been retweeted a few times in the past - the last time by Clint Mansell for High Rise. Kinda surreal, isn't it!? I always imagine the person sitting behind their laptop looking at my work and then I'm asking myself if they really like it, or if it's just an "mhm, some random looser made some shit with my name, *sigh* ... okay *retweet*"
And there's also the slight sour taste of copyright infringment shining through. But only for a second. I guess after all celebs are real people too and they probably really like what they see. So again, CONGRATULATIONS!! I hope one of your fine works will get picked up by a label or indie composer soon! You'd really deserve it.

This is ASTONISHING!
I love the way one would unfold it, a triangle within a triangle ;)
Also, the cover itself reminds of the poster for A Clockwork Orange. The triangle design makes it unique and stand out among the other covers in the collection.
Nice work, my friend! :-D
Thanks pal!
Yeah I know, I've also made the Clockwork Orange connection immediately. It's really similar and I can't wait for the film to see if there's more behind it. After all it is said, that the director is a big Kubrick fan himself.
The GIF is a little fast to examine all 23 versions, but I guess you've made a fine pick for the final image. No way I would call this custom cover a failure. It's pretty good and you give it a lot more substance with your back story.
In fact, I could frame and hang anyone of your recent cover stories, those are such good reads! I enjoy your subtle humor so damn much, it's a real treat. Your Alien Quadrilogy post was probably the best thing I've read in a long time! Fucking hilarious.
So please keep making covers. Even if you doubt your own cover creating skills (which I think are top notch btw), your creative writings are more than worth it.

I know I'm a few years behind, but I just discovered how good this score is: :D
Oh I love that one as well.
It's so dark, melancholy and full of small musical details that only offer themselves on repeat listenings. It sets the mood IMMEDIATELY. A regular listen for me during every winter (as are Jeremy Soule's Skyrim and Thomas Newman's Road to Perdition).
I love it so much in fact, that I even started to recreate one of my older custom covers from scratch, because I wanted to frame it and hang it on my office wall. My current version unfortunately is only 835 pixels wide:
I'd neet at least 3500 pixels for a good print job. Although making the one above was a real chore, as I had to draw every single letter more or less by hand and then add individual distress filters to achieve the look of the original source image, which was in an underwhelming 400 pixel resolution. So I'm not fully sure if I really want to sit with it for another 5-6 hours only to get a higher resolution version. But I'm tempted to do it.

I respectfully call you CRAZY. Crazily dedicated as well. And, personally, if it were my skills and my wall it was going up on, I'd do it :) The satisfaction of staring at for hours, days, weeks, MONTHS upon end would definitely outweigh those 5-6 hours of work. It'd be worth it. GO FOR IT! :)

And me too! I'm racking up plays on the FYC in iTunes like nobody's business. But I still don't have the OST or an expanded edit combining the two. I'm waiting to be able to afford the deluxe OST with the gorgeous digipack packaging, as well as the 1997 Special Editions of ESB and RotJ.

What Deluxe OST do you mean? The digipack version of the regular OST? This one?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4eVWakUS34
If you already have the FYC I'd recommend to skip the current digipack and wait for a real deluxe version that obviously will come out some day. At least JJ Abrams once talked about releasing 30 mins of additional music not heard in the film. And JWFan found out that in fact 58 minutes of music are still completely unreleased and unheard. Plus, there are also certain tracks in the film that haven't seen the light of day in any form, for example the Lin-Manuel Miranda track playing at Maz Kanata's cantina bar.
Also, I'm preeeetty sure that there'll pop up some more unofficial releases on here, once the Blu-Ray has been dissected to death... ;)

Ah yes, that's the one. I saw it in my local HMV a while ago, but couldn't really afford it. I'd still like to own it, as it's a gorgeous digipack. But you're right - a real deluxe edition will probably be released sometime, hopefully soon. And if the sessions leak, well... that would be rather delicious too. :)
From what I read on JWFan it seems like quite a complicated score, so I don't know what the sessions would include, but hopefully all the film mixes.

That's awesome sauce Junkie. I vaguely remember you being noticed by a composer before, I can't remember what score it was for..."Another Earth" or something? I think it was one with two people reaching out to each other with separate Earths in the background...

Never made a gif before. I'll keep that in mind if there's a next time.
So glad someone got a laugh from my little April Fool's joke. I was chuckling to myself at a few points; I really wanna see an Alien TV series now! I'm surprised by the lack of "joke" covers around here, people should do them more often to help unwind. And I gotta say, for such a quick job, the Quadrilogy covers turned out okay!
As for "Waterworld", it was an interesting experience to say the least. I'm glad for it in the sense that I learnt a lot about overlay, subtle shadowing, and of course, setting minimum requirements for what quality images you should use! I'm just glad that it turned out semi-alright.
Not to brag, but creative writing was one of my strong suits at school. But now that I'm at Uni I don't really do any of that anymore; the only writing I do is note-taking and experimental writeups and reviews. It's cool to have an outlet like this to let the creative juices flow every once in a while. Oh, and making custom covers, that too. ;)

Hmmmm a really don't think a shadow would look at all good. I'd really hate to have to add one. I personally think it's ok that one or two letters are obscured. It's pretty obvious what it says, so I'm happy with it how it is. Any other suggestions for where I could put the text?
I could perhaps shrink the logo a little and then shrink the top text a fair bit and put it directly above the logo?

It's maybe that it reminds me too much of the shabby 'screenshot-type' complete score covers you often find via a Google search. I don't know... I'm going to shut up know because I'm making it sound worse than it is and I really don't want to take the piss on the Prez's hard work. Sorry :(

But to be honest, I also tend to stay away from screenshot-type covers, because I see it as you do.
They often times look like cobbled together, even though much effort has been put in. The SW screenhot above is a good one, as crisp as it might get, but it's still a different type of thing than a promotional shot or a high-res-artwork. But yet, sometimes it's the only option.

I'm glad you see my point of view, at least that way I don't have to fear being misinterpreted. And while it can indeed be very refreshing, I personally feel that in this particular case it doesn't really work out. The first shot works wonders though, the contrast of the sabers on opposing ends of the cover is nice :)

Here's two that I've been meaning to finish for a while... The Deluxe Edition Star Trek & Star Trek Into Darkness covers! Both are 1500x1500, and they came out pretty well I believe.
Star Trek (The Deluxe Edition) - This one is a recreation of the official Deluxe Edition art I really liked. It was never available in any decent resolution online and wasn't a perfect square, so it's tweaked but otherwise it's mostly the official cover.

Star Trek Into Darkness (The Deluxe Edition) - The official cover was bland and bleak and needed a redo. The movie is all colorful and action-y; figured the cover should match.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Expanded)
i decided that since the artwork from the target booklet looks really nice, i decided to make my own version of it and use different portions of the different posters without using the movie title in the bottom right corner. Unfortunately, Finn's and Leia's character posters is in Han Solo's triangle. the only reason why is because his poster was cut off differently, and i wasn't gonna end up cutting off his face, or smudging any of his extra features just to make it fit the triangle. Hope you guys like...

Dave999
04-14-2016, 04:30 PM
Hey Jaysaurus, great work so far, I like it (see second paragraph) but here are a few of my thoughts/suggestions:
You did kind of squish Rey's face in her triangle so why not do the same with Solo? This way it looks off :(
Also I'd move Finn more to the left and Leia more to the right. That leaves you room to widen Solo's triangle and get more of his features in there.
Plus the top and bottom triangles don't add up. The point where Kylo's triangle meets with the top of the frame is way more centered than Finn's triangle.
Once that's done you also need to move everything more to the left so the center of the triangles aligns with the center of the logo.
If you put "MUSIC BY..." in the same half-opaque rectangle as you did at the top of the cover, you can allow yourself to lower Solo's face a bit :)
I'd also have Kylo and Finn's sabers align perfectly at the edge of the cover. That way you can see both their faces a lot better.

(
http://imgur.com/YdhSOue)
I actually thought of using the cover for a version of my own, but I figured it'd be too much of a pain to get things right.
I have more TFA versions in iTunes then I have (great) covers for, so I hope you get it right :)
Right now I use two of heidl's IMAX artworks. It would be great if I could swap one out with this Target cover :)
EDIT: Screw it. No way but up. Nurture your creativity. I downloaded all posters from starwars.com and I'm going to take a stab at something similar myself :)

I actually really agree with this^, but I often make ones with screenshots just as a fun experiment that is occasionally rewarding. Sometimes they really work well. Some of my covers for Monsters, Inc., Cars, Bolt, and Balto were quite effective (though I say so myself) and they were all screenshots.

I used the 80's style box art released on Bandai Namco's twitter. I then used SF Atarian for the top text (I hope it's '80s enough). There's like four composers for this, so I left those names out.

Now this is my type of cover! Simple, ethereal and poignant, with blurred edges (to define the boundaries of the square) and a circular theme (implying the CD underneath), along with perfect fonts and text placement. Love it!

1. Sorry, but no, it isn't currently available in a larger size.
2. As eggerty cites above with a link, the ISO score collection is available here on the forum (look for Jessie's re-upload).
3. I didn't want to use the clumsy sounding "…From The Isolated Scores" tagline so I settled on the generic "The SyFy…Collection". If anyone can propose another, I'm open to suggestion.

Jayasaurus - I really like your TFA cover, as I also love the Target BR slipcover. But the logo you've used looks kinda odd. Almost squished. Maybe replace it with one like this?
I never understand why people keep removing the black fill from the Star Wars TFA logo. It's supposed to be there... Also makes it a lot easier to see on a lot of the TFA custom covers too.

3. I didn't want to use the clumsy sounding "From The Isolated Scores"
Clumsy sounding because of all the misappropriate titling from other people doing their own projects.
A common mistake in terminology here at Shrine.
But, somewhere, it should specify that it's from the official/retail isolated scores.

Believe me, I went back and forth, back and forth with possible titles—none of them really hitting the spot—until I eventually looked up at the clock and said: "Fuck it!"
I mean, if you got any suggestions, I'll put them to the test. No guarantees, of course.

I can understand why people remove the black fill. I guess it's a contrast issue, especially on bright backgrounds. Due to the yellow edge, the logo appears to be smaller than it actually is. Take this poster for example:

That picture looks like it's a rip from a website.
Websites create the logos with alpha transparency.
Created without the black matte background (and stars).
It allows web designers to change the site as they need and re-use the logo all over the site as they need, without having to worry about the black background.
So for any cover editors here, it's a great idea to paste that transparent title onto any image they want to use.
In the case of Mr Gold's cover with Kylo Ren and all that redness, it comes in handy so you don't seen a giant black square with the title in some random spot that doesn't look right.
Using the studio-given transparent title cards also works best rather than taking some poor screenshot and manually removing the black (which won't be nearly as clean as the studio product).

Blame international keyboards. His name is Brtschi, and anyone who types Baertschi simply doesn't have the umlaut () on their keyboard, or doesn't know how to get it. Times New Roman seems too simple to use (I'm guessing that's what you used...?), though I like your choice of picture. :)

Yes, it's what I used.
Hmm... I actually can't see any other font going better on it than the one now, lol.
I'll try some others tommorow.

oooooooooo, very nice. :) I'm curious to see if the Winter Soldier's theme will come back but perhaps with a more "heroic" sound to it to reflect the character arc. I think that would be super cool.

Having seen the movie, I can confirm it does, along with a few other themes from "The Winter Soldier". No Avengers theme though, or any other theme from the other films, which is a huge disappointment. Not like people were expecting much after Jackman's subpar score from the previous film, but still.

I thought it was a fantastic score but I agree that the one thing that is SEVERELY lacking in the MCU is SCORE COHESION. It's ridiculous how different some scores sound compared to others, not mentioning the utter blasphemy of not recycling hero themes...

Couple of requests here. Looking for a cover for The Next Karate Kid by Bill Conti to match the individual covers to go with the I-III Varese put out separately from the box
While it doesn't match entirely, I hope this works for you. I redid the logo to match the ones done for The Karate Kid and The Karate Kid Parts II & III. The .png of Hilary isn't the best, so when I get around to making a better one then I'll re-do that part of the logo and make another version of the cover. Anyways, for now, click for full size!

)
---------- Post added at 04:55 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:51 PM ----------
I also updated my cover for The Karate Kid Part III and fixed the placement of the word 'The' in the logo. The cover I made for TKKP3 and TNK match...and I'll probably make matching covers for The Karate Kid and The Karate Kid Part II today too. As always, click for full size!

Hey everybody! I'm seeing a lot of really good and interesting covers from all of you! (the Civil War ones especially) Bart Oss, Remesyx, Mr Gold, Jason, gururu, and SoundtrackJunkie, nice work. :)
I just thought I'd make a sort of 'alternate version' of Scott's wonderful cover for Mother Night he made me a month or two ago (page 504-505).
I saw this image and thought it worked well (I did have to make it black and white, though).
The image is a little pixelated in some areas, but doesn't look too bad. (Credit to scoremanscott for font, logo, and placement of text)

Hard to find pictures of something suitable that spans all four movies. Even the Transformers' armor changes in between films. Something specific you had in mind?

Well I doubt anything can de bone, except combining all titles in a ridiculous one, like Revenge of the Dark of Extinction or something lol.
One cover for each film would be great, not to mention easier

You're losing me here. Do you want one cover so you can put all of the films in one album in iTunes (for example), with one disc per film?
Or would you prefer one cover per film? (--->Because there's already plenty of those posted here, just go see in the custom covers index thread).
