Can you do PoPoLoCrois Monogatari for PSX? PSFs are available.

...1000!

Well, fine. It even came in under my 200mb limit this time! PoPoLoCrois Monogatari is now in the PSX section! This is gonna be some great stuff to use as background music in my podcasts... nice and mellow.

Here's what else is up today:

SNES

Aerobiz and Aerobiz Supersonic - Some nice, jazzy tunes. The composer for the 1st one is known, but not the 2nd one... they both have similar sounds, though. Good relaxing music!

Uncharted Waters - New Horizons - Synthesized classical/ new wave music from Yoko Kanno. Not my cup of tea, but well composed.

Genesis

World of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck - Might be the longest English-titled game I've ever seen. The music is cartoon-inspired, with some symphonic stuff thrown in. Not too bad, but not amazing. You may like it if you enjoy that kind of stuff.

PS2

Pac Man World 2 - I'm only allowing this because it was requested before I put up the 200mb rule (I think.) Anyways, the music is encoded from the GameCube version of the game, but it's identical to the PS2 version, so I added it next to PMW3 for easy finding. It's cinematic music, and there's quite a lot of it. 300mb worth!

So that's it for now! Enjoy!

You are wonderful for uploading Super Bombliss and Baseball Simulator .1000!! So many thanks from me for those!!

There's only one soundtrack file available for Dragon Power, and it's also tagged with the Dragon Ball title as well... I'm not familiar enough with the games and their soundtracks to tell, but did you listen to the album? It's possible that songs from both games are in there.

Definitely a different soundtrack, as evident from the title track for the Famicom version:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2fVvqtmIqio

Unfortunately the zipped Dragon Power soundtrack doesn't include the different tracks, but I imagine they're hard to find in the first place. Either way I'm very happy with the other albums you were able to put up here for me, so many thanks for that. :)

1000 posts in this thread! Time to party like it's 1999

:neg:

*Ahem, now that THAT'S out of the way, let's get on with it:

SNES

Silva Saga 2 - "Silva" is how us Italians from the New York area pronounce "Silver," so it cracks me up every time I see this title. It's good RPG music. If you like that stuff, grab it.

Genesis

Air Diver - Flyin' and shootin' music. Cool basslines. Simple melodies. That's this album in a nutshell.

TG16

Tensei Ryuu - Saint Dragon - Medieval flavored action music. It's got some cool Instrument tones you usually don't hear on a PC Engine.

Knight Rider Special - I actually own this game... it's one of the few games that I have for my PC Engine. It's fun! It's like a souped-up Rad Racer with a storyline that you can't read. The music is fun, too. More cool basslines and the Knight Rider theme at the beginning! How can you argue with awesomeness like that?

Game Boy

Battle Unit Zeoth - Now THIS is my cup of tea! Awesome shoot 'em up music to keep you gunnin' for more aliens. I'm gonna play this one a lot.

That's it, hooligans! Hope you dig 'em! :)

Greetings, gamer music geeks! Here's some more stuff, all for the NES:

Satomi Hakkenden - A simple, short soundtrack with some relaxing traditional Japanese tunes. Very nice.

Tenchi wo Kurau II - Shokatsu Koumei Den - This is the Japan-only sequel to Destiny of an Emperor, following the legends of the "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" novels. Fans of Dynasty Warriors will recognize a lot of the characters here. The music... man, this is really awesome stuff. Driving anthems, heroic fanfares, and some really innovative use of the Famicom's sound chip. This is one to check out.

Yo! Noid - Yep, the Domino's Pizza mascot had his own bizarrely-titled game. Being from Capcom, though, this really is pretty good action-game stuff. I'm sure that some of the composers who worked on other Capcom games wrote this, but there aren't any credits to be found anywhere on the web. Even so, you should grab it.

And that is that. I probably won't have any more for the rest of the day, unless I get a chance late tonight. Enjoy!

actually the game was made by Now Productions, meaning more than likely a member of Namco's sound staff worked on the game. (they're the same team who did the console Splatterhouse games, among others)

Hi guys! Beefing up the PC-88/ MSX/ Whatever section with some goodies today... The Touhou series for the NEC PCs!

Touhou Reiiden ~ Highly Responsive to Prayers
Touhou Fuumaroku ~ the Story of Eastern Wonderland
Touhou Kaikidan - Mystic Square

These are games 1, 2 and 5 in the series, respectively. They were all designed and composed AND programmed by one dude... Junya Ota, known as "ZUN." The 1st game was on the PC-88 and the music is a bit simple, but shows some great composition. Touhou Fuumaroku uses the PC-98 hardware and sounds a bit better, and Mystic Square my favorite, both technically and musically. I'm on the lookout for games 3 and 4... game 2 was just released in soundtrack form at the beginning of the year, so hopefully I'll be able to complete the set soon. Enjoy!

I know you don't like doing Super Robot Wars gamerips, but I still have the guts to ask you to do Super Robot Wars IMPACT (PS2). It has 2,5 hours worth of music, the OST was released in 2CDs. IMPACT is the remake of Wonderswan Compact series (three games), and one of the longest SRW games to date. It's also one of the best games of the series, imo.

Pro Yakyuu? Satsujin Jiken! - A bizarre baseball-themed satire murder mystery. (I have no idea either.)

Ide Yousuke Meijin no Jissen Mahjong 1 and 2 - They're mahjong games, so they have a nice lounge-y feel to them... the 2nd one is actually quite good. Check 'em out!

PSX Super Robot Wars games have some seriously awesome tunes, like Toki wo Koete, the theme song from F and F Kanketsu Hen. But the OSTs for those are pretty much complete so there's really no need to make rips. Man I would love to play the older SRWs but the option to skip the battle animations was not present before Alpha for PSX. _- I know the attacks are cool but after watching them a hundred times, the OOMPH they have will have lost some of its... oomph. Indeed. But at least one can enjoy Za Musica.

A rip for this game isn't really necessary. If you follow this link (http://www.theisozone.com/downloads/pc/windows-games/civilization-2---multiplayer-gold-edition/) you'll find a download of the game... in it, there's a "sounds" folder with wav files of all the music in the game (as far as I know.) The wav files are super low quality because, well... the game is super old. They sound pretty decent though. If there's any other music in the game, I'd have no idea how to get it. PC games aren't really my "thing" unfortunately. There's a PSX version of the game... does it have the same music?

Anyways, want to start the week with yet another 5 vgm request:

- Sand Scorpion (Arcade) or Silent Dragon (Arcade) (I know the limit is 5 per request, but the reason I put another in is just in case one of them can't be rippable)
- Sangokushi Seishi: Tenbu Spirits (Super Nintendo) (not by KOEI, but by Wolf Team)
- XZR II (MSX) (sequel to XZR)
- Xevious: Fandraut Densetsu (PC Engine) (has some excellent music, since it was developed by Compile)
- Zan III Spirits (Super Nintendo) (some more Motoi Sakuraba goodness :))

I should listen to your next podcast when it gets released. :D Have a good day!!

Hi guys! I know it's been a few days, but it's been a busy weekend. To those of you who have been PMing me to ask if I'm ok... Thanks for the concern! I was just working extra hard on the podcast. :)

So, because of that, the new podcast is now in the OP! We had a lot of fun with episode 4 because we're playing some songs that sound like popular rock songs. For instance, Janet Jackson TOTALLY ripped the Bridge Zone theme from the SMS/ Game Gear version of Sonic the Hedgehog. And there's a Runaway Five song from Eartbound that sounds just like a Doors song! It's really interesting. You can download it via MEGA, or watch the YouTube stream (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SysylQdl10), where we've added links to the popular songs on the video as the tracks play.

And I can't just post after 3 days without having a LITTLE bit of video game music, right? So grab Air Fortress and Gozonji - Yaji Kita Chin Douchuu in the NES section! Both are worth a listen, and I was especially impressed with Gozonji. It has a very unique sound, and a couple of really awesome tracks.

I'll be back to my almost-daily update routine tomorrow, guys. Enjoy the podcast and let me know what you think!

A few quick updates this morning:

Civilization II for the PSX - According to the Wiki, the music is the same from the PC version, so this should fulfill the request. The CD audio was actually 9 different short tunes on one CD track, so I split them up into separate MP3s for ease of listening. Hope you enjoy it!

A Boy and His Blob 2 - The Rescue of Princess Blobette for the Game Boy - A short soundtrack. Game Boy sound emulation programmers all over the net were complaining about how this soundtrack won't behave. It sounds a little wonky to me, but since I don't have the original game, I can't be sure. If it's REALLY off, let me know and I'll just take it down.

There will be more later! Don't forget to listen to the podcast! :)

A few more updates this afternoon:

TG16

Xevious - Fardraut Densetsu - This has both the original and an enhanced version of the game on one card, so it has both the original and enhanced versions of the soundtrack, too. It's cool to compare the music from one and the other, and see how far audio technology has come in such a short time.

MSX

XZR II - Known as Exile on the Genesis, the MSX version still has some cool songs despite it's comparatively simple soundchip. A good listen.

Arcade

Sand Scorpion - From a little-known developer known as FACE, and published by Tecmo, this vertical shooter's music is a bit grating at times, but has some interesting songs throughout.

SNES

Tenbu Spirits - I was impressed at how organic this soundtrack feels. A nice soundfont mixed with excellent composition makes this almost feel like a live performance. I'd like to hear the arranged OST that was released for this game.

Zan 3 Spirits - I'm seeing a lot of Motoi Sakuraba's similarities to his Dark Souls work here, as there's lots of foreboding symphonic pieces in this game. Similar to Tenbu Spirits, the fidelity of the sampled instruments in the soundfont is really high, making the percussion and instruments sound less synthesized than usual.

Good stuff today! Hope you like them!

Today's updates are here! Check these bad boys out:

NES

New Ghostbusters II - So what happens when you put the Ghostbusters themes into the very capable hands of Hyper Zone's Jun Ishikawa? Great things, that's what! This is a groovy, fun album. The GB theme is especially cool. I was happily surprised.

Satsui no Kaisou - Power Soft Satsujin Jiken - Another murder mystery novel by the same composer as Gozonji - Yaji Kita Chin Douchuu. This one is good, but seems a little more sad. :(

Genesis

Virtua Racing Deluxe 32X - Great soundtrack. It's better than the Genesis version, but still pales in comparison to the awesome arcade version. So this one's... in the middle of the VR sandwich. Yum.

Wii

Wii Shop Channel Themes - This was all I could find for now. Still on the lookout for the menu music. This was my favorite Wii tune anyways!

Brothas and sistas! Lend me your ears! Let me tell you a tale of several video game soundtracks. Video game soundtracks that will please you to your very core! Shall we take a journey to see what we have uploaded today? Of course! Here be the latest gems to grace my chest of treasures.

OK. Enough with the talking weird. Here's the stuff:

Game Boy

Legend of Zelda - Link's Awakening DX - It's just like the regular one, but in COLOR! Woo! I don't need to describe Zelda music to you guys. If you're here, you know what Zelda music sounds like already. So enjoy.

Pokemon Yellow/ Red/ Blue - I've never been a Pokemon fan. Sooo, I dunno. For someone who has just heard these tunes for the first time... they're just OK. But I'm sure it brings back lots of good memories for the ones who were playing the game back then, and not selling them by the dozen at GameStop. *ahem ME ahem*

Genesis

Exile - What a difference it makes when music is composed on the PC-98 and then ported to the Genesis, right? Yuzo Koshiro did it, and this game does too. And you can tell. The composition is fantastic. Just grab it and thank me! Oh and KingTengu for requesting it, too. ;)

N64

Destruction Derby 64 - 90's industrial techno. Really impressive, actually, as the N64 isn't really known for having outstanding music. It's all sequenced and not streamed, so it sounds a fair shake better than WipEout 64. The composer, Eric Brosius, has a pretty impressive history between both games and bands, so he knows his stuff. Another worthy one to check out.

NES

Jackal - A short but cool Konami action soundtrack.

SNES

Uniracers - I could have sworn I had done this album before... it might have gotten lost when I had to move over from Dropbox... Anyways, here it is (again)! Imagine Motorhead wrote SNES songs, and that about covers this soundtrack. :)

OK, so... Elwood, I'm still working on Rusty for the PC-98... it's HOOT, so it takes extra effort. It'll be worth it when it's done, though! And KingTengu, the arcade stuff is forthcoming, as long as I can find it. Everything else is in the queue!

I am glad that you are giving more awareness to the obscure and unknown Japanese developers and companies, along with their music. FACE's soundtrack for their arcade game from 1993, Nostradamus is probably their best work. Actually, most of FACE's games were developed by an even smaller company by the name of Sankindo.

And due to that, I return bearing yet another gift for this thread: The soundtrack for Monster World IV, (http://www.mediafire.com/download/6d7idqn46t3d2jq/Monster_World_IV.rar) a neat little Genesis/MD title that, until recent years, was yet another Japan-exclusive title. Enjoy the Arabian-flavored sounds, everyone! :)

Also, thanks a bunch for Speed Power Gunbike! I was particularly interested in that game since it was one of the earlier titles developed by Inti Creates (who are best known for various Mega Man titles, as well as the upcoming Mighty No. 9 and Azure Striker Gunvolt). As far as new requests go..... well, I don't have any new ones at the moment, but I was still wondering if you're able to get The Emperor's New Groove (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YWjQ27_5evg) for the PS1? That's all I'm interested in right now, really. Thanks in advance if you can get it (and if not, then hey, don't sweat it!). ;)

Awesome! Thank you! I'll add it to my collection! It really sucks, but Emperor's New Groove is encoded in a way that hasn't been cracked by anybody. I spent a whole night trying to figure it out, and got nowhere. So I can't do it. :(

Yeah, I've been turned on to TONS of new music! I especially love Alberto Jose Gonzalez's Game Boy soundtracks, the Power Drift arcade soundtrack, Night Slave for the PC-98... Outrun 2019 on the Genesis, which I just played on the podcast... The Hybrid Front, also on the Genesis... all of the Sunsoft NES soundtracks and Megami Tensei II... the list is too long to type out! That's one of the reasons I decided to start the podcast; to highlight a lot of the really good stuff in my collection that you guys have introduced me to. :)

So... that being said... here's some goodies for your Saturday night:

Arcade

Final Blow - No, it's not something you get from your girlfriend before she's goes off to college. You pervs. It's a boxing game! Oh! Makes sense now! It's only about 2 minutes long, but it's from the well-known Zuntata (which reminds me... I should do RayStorm for the PSX,) so what it does have is quality stuff.

Silent Dragon - I was surprised that this one is very hip-hop influenced. Cool record scratches, vocal shouts, phat beats... it's all there. Too bad it's not in stereo though!

Wii

Dokapon Kingdom - Evidently the gamerip for this just doesn't exist. I had to figure out how to extract the audio files from the disc (which I haven't done on Wii before) and transcode them. But I got it done! And it sounds really, really good. This is a quality lighthearted action soundtrack that I'd recommend.

OK, that's it for now! Enjoy!

Hey ruiner, I was listening to some of your rips tonight, and I noticed a weird issue with the rip of Power Blade II. It sounds like the speed has been reduced by quite a bit. Obviously when you're ripping so many soundtracks there's bound to be a few hiccups, I figured you'd want to know.

That's really odd. It's possible that it was the PAL version of the game and I recorded it with NTSC timing. I'll check it out. Thanks for the heads-up!

Any chance Speed Punks could go up again? I'm gettin' an error on the file (if you have a chance, of course).

So, I was right... it was PAL timing. For some reason, I had to force NTSC to get Power Blade II to sound correct. It's been updated. Redownload from the OP and enjoy!

It's working fine for me from MEGA, but I've put it up temporarily in my DropBox:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/109623321/Speed%20Punks%20%28PSX%20-%20ruiner9%29.7z

Let me know when you get it, and I'll take it down from there.

For people with chronic MEGA downloading issues: If you are using FireFox or Chrome, you can install MEGA extensions into your browser, and it seems to help quite a bit. I use it in Chrome and it makes things a bit faster and more reliable. Try it out!

Looks like he worked on at least Kidou Senshi V Gundam for TOSE/ Bandai before composing for Square. A person credited as MITSUTO.S is listed at the end of the game in the sound dept.

I like the music in that game- Say, didn't he also do Ruin Arm?

the game credits Switch・E, Studio M2, ST・Type M, Prince E, and Chatru. Suzuki normally went by MITSUTO.S back when he worked for Tose, so I don't think so.

Hey man I think you should check out the GBA remake soundtracks for Pokemon Red/Blue & Gold/Crystal. I'm back after a busy weekend with some STUFF! Here's the loadout for today:

NES

Legend of Prince Valiant - Medieval tunes from Keith Tinman. I was wondering why I had never heard of the game before, and it turns out it was a Europe-only release, so that explains it! Tinman is a respected composer, and his work is pretty good here.

Knight Rider - Ehhhh. Pretty bad. Doesn't even include the theme song like the PC-Engine version. That seems like kind of a no-brainer to have it in the game, right?

Hook - OK, well here's something to listen to! it's Jonathan Dunn, and if you've heard his other works, you know he's good at NES stuff. Also, this one has piratey themes. What's better than that?

Volguard II - I'm not even sure why I'm posting this. It sounds like those old ringtones from cellphones in the 80's. The only interesting trivia I could dig up was that the composer, Yasuhito Saito, went on to write the soundtracks for the lauded Rayxamber series for the PCE-CD. So if you'd like to hear how much his technique improved over 6 years, give this a try. But don't say I didn't warn you!

Game Boy

Pokemon Crystal and Gold - Do Silver and Gold have the same music? Because it's not available alongside these two. Anyways, enjoy your lame Pokemon stuff. :)

N64

ClayFighter 63 1/3 - While it IS well-composed and of pretty good quality for N64 sequenced music, I don't think I can listen to a whole hour's worth of circus jingles. Also, I miss the SNES theme song:

Clay Fighter
Clay Clay Fighter
Come on fight them if you dare!
Ooh!
Clay Fighter
Clay Clay Fighter
Hit 'em back and they don't care!
Totally awesome memories!

Also, I've improved upon the quality of Tim Follin's COMPLETELY AMAZING Future Tactics - The Uprising soundtrack by using the Xbox version of the game. So if you have the PS2 version, you should grab this one instead. If you don't have the PS2 version, WHY ARE YOU READING THIS? Go download it NOW! OMG it's so good. It'll be making an appearance in Podcast Episode 6!

Episode 5 has already been recorded and will be feature music from Journey to Silius, Shadow of the Colossus, Alundra, Hotline Miami, and more! It's gonna be a good one!

Thank you very much!

Just a note for Pokemon Crystal:

Unknown Song 1 was actually used, it's "Clair's Theme".
Unknown Song 2 was used in Japan as the "Mobile Menu", since you could connect it to a mobile phone (weird, huh?).
Unknown Song 3 was intended to be the "Skateboard Theme" before it was replaced by the bicycle. It's also the Japanese theme when you tried the Mobile Adapter.

In case someone was curious. :)
And yep, they have the same music.

Edit: Oh, and a song is apparently missing! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FP9udjzR970

Huh! Weird. That track isn't in the soundtrack file. Is it maybe exclusive to the silver version even though it says both? That's the only theory I can come up with.

By the way, the remakes for the GBA aren't ripped, so I can't do those either.

Yeah, Kou Otani has a huge amount of anime, films, and a few games to his name. We talk about it a bit in the podcast. I was really surprised that he did the soundtrack to Philosoma on the PSX, because it sounds nothing like SoC.

It's a SNES day! Lots of cool soundtracks for Nintendo's 3rd-gen system. Ready for it? Let's go!

ClayFighter - The original! Has some of those carnival elements that are so prevalent in 63 1/3, but also more of a rock 'n roll kind of vibe.

Gradius 3 - Nice. One of my favorite shooters when I was a kid. Suffered from horrible slowdown, but I think that just made it easier! I love the sound font in this game. It's so rich and sounds so good. Certainly a recommended download.

Super Mario World - It only took 7 months for someone to request it! I don't think I need much of a explanation for this one, do I?

Astral Bout 1, 2, and 3 - These are mixed martial arts wrestling games. The first title's music is kind of simple, with mostly beats and few short rock tracks. The second one has a very techno feel, and introduces themes for each character, clocking in at about an hour of music. The 3rd one is much more dynamic, with lots of different styles of music. Of all three, I think my favorite is the dance music of the second game, but they're all really good.

Doomsday Warrior - Kind of a jazz feel, here. Really tinny sound samples, too. I think it would have sounded better with a much richer sound font.

Strike Gunner STG - Inspired by Top Gun? Probably! It's pretty good, but again, pretty tinny sounding. Maybe I'm just getting too used to the Genesis sound chip? LOL

Alrighty! 8 SNES games! Not a bad haul for a Wednesday. I'll be back with more tomorrow!

I see, that's most unfortunate.... :( well, thanks anyway for trying!

And that being said, I actually do have two requests this time, if you're able to get them: The first is Legend of Kay (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=muZMFGkzCr8) for the PS2 (the soundtrack of which was done by the awesome Jake Kaufman), and the second is Kingdom of Paradise (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Fjwj2rYJKg) for the PSP (aka Tenchi no Mon and Key of Heaven for the Japanese and European versions, respectively). I guess I'm just really in the mood for some oriental-flavored tunes at the moment, heh. :)

So, YankovicFarley, I've got some good news, and some bad news. I'll start with the bad news: The Grandia games are way too big to host. And I'm not talking just a little big, I'm talking like, 11 hours of music between the two of them big! That's waaaaay over my 200mb per file limit.

But the good news is, I have your other requests done, plus a bonus!

N64

Tetrisphere - Holy bejeezus. This is an N64 game? How is this so GOOD! It's like Prodigy and Chemical Brothers and Daft Punk all rolled into one! DOWNLOAD THIS ONE! You'll find out why below:

The New Tetris - This is from the same composer, Neil Voss. And it's just as fantastic. So you want the REAL good news? I did some research on Mr. Voss, and it turns out he lives in my state. I reached out to him, and he's agreed to do an interview on the podcast! I'm super excited. We're still ironing out the details, but I'm shooting for the end of next month for the interview, and the podcast shortly after that. So rad.

Sega CD

Vay - I played this game as a kid. I didn't realize how well the music would stand the test of time. It's got some great dance tunes! Also, "Freak You Out" sounds a lot like Micheal Jackson's "Thriller." Ironic, considering my last podcast was about VGM that sounds like pop songs. :)

Dreamcast

San Francisco Rush 2049 - It's Barry Leitch, so you know it's good. There's a little bit of everything in this one, from techno, to rock, to industrial... and it's all extremely well-produced.

Guys, ALL of today's releases are super awesome, so if you haven't heard of some of them, give them a try and I think you'll be happy. See ya tomorrow!

I just wanted to say thank you for sharing your many soundtracks. I've found soundtracks I've been looking for, as well as soundtracks I'd forgotten about or gave up searching for but was happy to re-discover. It's been great listening for the nuances between your versions and some soundtracks I already have! Only increases my appreciation for VGM and the intricacies of audio design. And your commentary is great to read, too!

Do you think any of these requests might be feasible?

Blinx 2 (Xbox)
Jet Grind Radio (DC)
SEGA Marine Fishing (DC)
SSX Blur (Wii) — Been looking for a higher-quality version for ages.
Game & Watch Gallery 1/2 (GB)

Thank you once again for all your hard work! It's been a pleasure. :)

2. Pizza Pop (Jaleco)
3. Totally Rad (Jaleco)

Howdy, cowboys! Time to mosey on up to the bar and sip down some delicious soundtracks. Order up!

Dreamcast

Jet Set Radio - I could have sworn I had done this one, but it was the Xbox version. Silly me! Anyways, if you like hip-hop, new jack swing, and dance beats... this one's for you. There's a bunch of different versions of each song in this collection, so you can pick and choose the tracks you want to make your own coherent album. Or, just listen to it all at once!

GBA

Racing Gears Advance - The last of the three super-amazing soundtracks that Neil Voss wrote. I still can't believe this is from a Game Boy Advance. The GSF for this game isn't available, but I reached out to YouTube poster "jlspacemarine" who had a soundtrack on his channel. He still had the 320kbps MP3s he made, so he sent them over to me to share with you guys. :)

Genesis

Monster World IV - MarvelB's rip! I added some fades and some tags. :)

PS2

Legend of Kaye - Not my favorite Jake Kaufman work, but certainly is worth a listen. It's symphonic, but still carries a steady tempo that makes it easy to listen to.

Enjoy 'em!

Out of curiousity, are downloadable games like Toki Tori 2 out of the question? If that's the case, no sweat! Just thought I'd ask.

TT2 is too new... I don't want to start getting into pirating current games just to get a look at their music files. At some point, the filesystem on the Wii U will be accessible and I'll be able to look at those games, but that time hasn't come yet.

Double Dragon Neon is far and away my favorite Kaufman soundtrack, but Contra on the Game Boy Advance is a close second. Of course, I remember him back from when he was doing video game remixes on OverClocked, so there are tracks I enjoy from there, too. Shantae for the game Boy is excellent as well. I think that Legend of Kay is good for what it is, but I just don't care for symphonic music that much.

I'm glad you're enjoying my uploads! If there are older out-of-print PC games you're interested in, I can take a look at them, but no guarantees I can do it, as there's a million (literally a million) different kinds of audio files for PC's out there! :)

Ah, I see. I wasn't perfectly clear on the methods you used. No worries, then! I know Wii U soundtracks in general are hard to come by. And I take it the same would apply to 3DS games? I do know that there's some general difficulty around doing 3DS recordings, so again, don't worry if you can't.

Thanks for sharing your insights! I'll definitely be looking into DDN now! Shantae too (although I should probably get around to playing the game!).

I'll definitely let you know if I think of any PC titles, but the "out-of-print" part reminded me of a PSX game. Do you think it might be possible to do Running Wild? I'm already at my limit of five requests (unless JSR created the opening?), but that's something I'd appreciate. I believe there may be some rips on YouTube if that helps?

I can do DS, but not 3DS. Also, while SSX Blur is rippable, it's over 6 hours of music. That's way too big for me to host. I can do Running Wild in it's place, though!

Speaking of Jake Kaufman, that reminded me of WayForward. And a short while ago I remembered another older game with a soundtrack I've been looking for: The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie (GBA). Since I'm pretty hype for an the upcoming PC/Wii U game 90s Arcade Racer (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gPIo6bcISsc), I've been getting into some of the music from the sort of games that inspired it. If I could I'd like to make these Sega arcade requests:

Indy 500 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ZIQLXP2D7o)
Motor Raid (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FsISZSk54qc)
Rad Mobile aka Gale Racer (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_x4_XJnNJWg)
Sega Super GT aka SCUD Race (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4FRHsTLgKSY)
I'd throw the Daytona USA games in there too, but I do have a copy that "Let's Go Away" box set already. Plus ya know, limiting my requests.

Also, sorry the rip of Rusty has taken so long, I didn't realize the game would be so complicated to work with. I hope you find it worth the effort at least.

EDIT: Also if and when possible I'd be okay with filling in missing track name info.

Honestly, the biggest help I need right now is with tagging the soundtracks that don't have tracknames or at least where they appear in the stages. If you (or anyone) has info about any of that stuff, it would really help out!

Maybe you should start compiling a list and have it appear in your first post? If it helps, I can tell you that Jumping Flash, Donkey Kong, Mario Party 8, and Mario Strikers Charged are some of the soundtracks in need of tagging. I could help with tagging MSC, actually, if you just tell me what needs doing/how you want me to go about it.

If anybody has tag information, it's easy! Just list the names of the tracks in order, like:

01_Stage 1
02_Stage 2
03_Ending

And onward. Send me a PM with the game name, system, and the list, and I'll take care of naming the tracks and re-uploading them. I'll give you credit in the "comments" section of the ID3 tags, too.

Thanks, guys!

Hi, y'all!

Got some SNES requests done today. They're all by Tenpei Sato (with varying co-composers,) who's done mostly games that haven't seen US soil. Notable exceptions are the Disgaea series and Phantom Brave. His SNES works, while competent, are, like... quintessentially stereotypical of SNES music. Light percussion, slappy bass, friendly, melodic keyboards in a very high register... I mean, these albums cover all the bases! If you want to demonstrate what Super Nintendo music generally sounded like in the 90's, play a Sato track and you won't go wrong!

So, go grab:

Alien vs. Predator
Magna Braban
Pachinko Maruhi Hisshouhou
Pachinko Renchan Tengoku Super CR Special
Shinseiki Odysselya

Currently working on the racing games, and the NES stuff, but I'll be gone for the rest of the day so I won't have anything more until Sunday afternoon.

Enjoy!

Thanks for Legend of Kay! Personally, I'm not opposed to symphonic music as long as it sounds good enough to me, but I can understand why it wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea. BTW, how goes the Kingdom of Paradise request? PSP rips are probably harder to find, but I'm not really sure about these things.....

.....though I do want to make another PSP-related request in the meantime, if it can be managed: Saru Get You: SaruSaru Daisakusen, (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lCXGTI7SY7A) an Asia-exclusive Ape Escape title (the title of which can be translated to something like Ape Escape: SaruSaru Big Mission). I've always been interested in this game's soundtrack. Unfortunately, I had to link to a video of the Chinese version of the game due to the lack of music rips, but you should still be able to hear the usual Soichi Terada goodness just fine, right? ;)

Kingdom of Paradise is in the queue! We are doubling up on the podcast sessions because Mike is moving next weekend, so there's very little time to do the more intensive albums lately. My process for the SNES and Genesis is so streamlined, that I can get those out very quick. PSP games tend to have proprietary encoding, which needs special attention.

Good question! I took those files from source files I found on the web. I guess I'll have to find the original disc to see what's missing.

In addition to this, could look into EyeToy: AntiGrav (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EyeToy:_AntiGrav) for the PS2?

Update time!

First off, here are the games I can't rip:

Spongebob (GBA) - Audio isn't ripped yet.
Wreck it Ralph (Wii) - Compressed file - no extraction tools available.
EyeToy: AntiGrav - Compressed file - no extraction tools available.

Sorry to the requesters. :(

Here's what I DO have today, though!

NES

Amagon - A neat little side-scroller. The music is fairly generic action game fare, but competent.

Pizza Pop! - Some good fast-paced stuff. I was surprised at how many tracks there were!

Arcade

Rad Mobile - An early Sega arcade Racer. It's got some cool tunes, despite being on pre-Genesis hardware.

INDY 500 - There's a whole lot of crazy sampled guitar solos here! Must have taken up quite a bit of the game's memory! This is a good chiprock soundtrack, and combined with the live recorded guitar, it's pretty unique.

PSP

Kingdom of Paradise - An underrated PSP RPG, which has a pretty hard-to-find soundtrack! The music has Asian influences, and a little light hip-hop flavor, and is mostly pretty quiet. This should make good background music for the podcast. :)

Speaking of the podcast, Episode 5 is slated for Wednesday! It'll be followed by my co-host Mike's new game review video, which will be a three parter covering the Fortified Zone series. I'll have a small role in the first one, followed by a much bigger role in the 2nd one... My wife makes a cameo, too. :)

Enjoy!

Should be an interesting podcast to listen to then. I'll be waiting for it, but in the meantime, I have a few requests.

Top Gear Rally (N64), Contra 4 (NDS), Panzer Dragoon (Saturn), and Panzer Dragoon II Zwei (Saturn). I like to note that Top Gear Rally also has a different menu song for PAL and Jap versions, but I'm not sure if it's possible to rip it or not. Thought it'd be worth a note, just in case it is possible. Many thanks.

If the soundtracks are similar, I'll post the better sounding one. If they're different, I'll do both. it's silly to waste precious space with identical music.

I've updated a few existing albums with track names! HUGE thanks to Elwood for Project S-11 on the Game Boy, and VGManiac456 for Contra: Shattered Soldier (PS2), Adventures of Lolo (NES), and Hang-On gp (Saturn)!

Also... one new update so far today... Contra 4 for the DS! Experience Jake Kaufman's takes on classic Contra songs, and a bunch of new rockin' tunes as well!

I shall hopefully be back with some more later this afternoon... tootles!

Aaaaannnnnnndddddddd more updates!

SNES

Bastard!! - We're looking at a combo of both speed metal, and Ninja Turtle-inspired, orchestra hit-infused dance stuff. Not bad!

Captain America and the Avengers - It's a mediocre ported soundtrack of an already mediocre arcade soundtrack... sooo... double mediocre? Mediocre squared? I was surprised to find the Genesis version is a million times better, so I'll upload that soon.

Dragon View - A typical RPG sounding album, with plentiful inspiration from the Ys series. The action songs are pretty good!

Power Moves - Haha, I remembered this one from my youth as soon as I heard those overpowering drum samples. This is a great example of how a good drum kit can turn a decent soundtrack into something really special. Listen to Warren's theme and you'll hear what I mean. The Genesis version is pretty much the same, but without the cool percussion, so I won't bother with it.

Genesis

Fighting Masters - Neat stereo effects for a 1991 game! "Arena 3" rocks! I like this one a lot.

And that, my friends, is that. I should be able to look into Lost in Shadow tonight... I have no idea if it's rippable, but I'll let you know!

Those songs are protected by ASCAP, plus they're available by getting the bands' albums. I'd rather not risk putting them up on a high-profile thread like mine. Sorry. :(

I DO have a couple very early morning updates, though!

Top Gear Rally for the N64 - A soundrip file for this game doesn't exist.... however, I did find an archived version of the soundtrack that Barry Leitch used to host on his website. The quality is phenomenal, but it doesn't include the alternate title theme.

Lost in Shadow for the Wii - Lots of creepy tracks, here. It's got about 5 or 6 coherent songs, and the rest are mostly ambient noise-scapes.

I should have more later! :)

Thank you, i really appreciate your hard effort.
I also have a technical question. I ripped a Music File from an SNES Game just for Fun.
Naturally i ended up with an SPC File. When i play the SPC File in Winamp (appropriate Codecs already installed) the Sound is Crystal Clear, with Winamp showing it at 48000khz.
So far so good, but when i listened to the SPC in foobar2000, the File only plays at 32000khz which of course is less Clear than 48000khz. Also when i encoded the File to a more common File in foobar, like MP3 or FLAC, it still gives me a 32000khz encoded File.
I searched for a Solution all over the Internet, but no luck so far.
Do you have an Idea what i'm doing wrong, because i want the MP3 or FLAC to actually sound like a genuine 48000khz, not a 32000khz "upscaled".

ruiner9
03-26-2014, 06:55 PM
In the preferences menu in Foobar2000, under "Input->Game Emu Player," there's a sample rate dropdown menu, which will let you select the rate you wish, up to 48000hz (It's 48000hz or 48khz, btw... 48000khz might get some audio engineers mad at you lol).

Personally, I think Winamp sounds much better anyways, and it gives you more options as to what kind of output you'd like to produce. If you're interested in making FLAC files, your best bet would be to use Winamp to convert to wave, and then the FLAC software to batch convert to FLAC once you've done whichever tracks you wanted. There might be a plugin for Winamp to go directly to FLAC from SPC... I haven't checked into that.

I tried what you suggested with foobar2000, but for some reason foobar doesn't like me. Changed it to 48khz and it still gives me 32khz.

Yeah, the problem is with GBA and N64 games, there aren't any emulator functions where you can just push a button and log the audio that's currently playing. Someone needs to hex-edit the ROM and extract the music files, which is kind of beyond my capabilities. That's why a lot of the more obscure games haven't been audio-ripped yet... there's just no interest from those with the know-how.

Also, because the post got buried on the last page pretty quickly, I just wanted to remind everyone again that Episode 5 of my podcast is up in the OP! It's always easier to hear me and my buddies talk about video game tunes, rather than doing all this annoying reading, right? Plus, I play the music FOR you! You don't even have to download and unzip it! :D

So, here's some stuff for this morning:

Game Boy

Game & Watch vol. 1 and 3 - I have no idea why the 2nd one isn't ripped. But... here's the other two! Vol. 1 is a little jazzier and heavy sounding, while Vol. 3 is a bit more whimsical. Both are very good.

Xbox

Blinx 2 - Masters of Time and Space - I learned two things today: Blinx is actually a Japanese game (I thought it was European) and this one has some incredible dance music! I was really surprised. This one's totally recommended.

Dreamcast

Sega Marine Fishing - So, this is a fishing game's music? It sounds like a trip to the club on a Saturday night. There's even remixes! The incidental game music is hard rock, which is a sharp contrast to the techno songs in the rest of the game.

PSX

Running Wild - This has kind of a Big Beat feel, with fast beats, horn sections, stand up bass, techno synths... I mean, it's really good stuff. Fast paced, and easy to listen to. I just wish I could find a composer for it!

And there ya go! Enjoy!

Thank you once again for those awesome musics. Much appreciated!! :)

I have five new SNES requests, and like the Tenpei Sato ones, these five focus on yet another composer, Masanao Akahori, whose work on SNES games is amazing, with his signature sound on games that have already been released on this board, like Cybernator, Nosferatu, Brain Lord, Silva Saga II, and Bastard!! (under the name Naked Trump; listen to the Bastard!! soundtrack and agree with me if it sounds like Akahori. At least I did. :):

- F1 ROC: Race of Champions (aka Exhaust Heat)
- F1 ROC II: Race of Champions (aka Exhaust Heat II)
- Nekketsu Tairiku Burning Heroes
- Ranma 1/2: Chonai Gekitou Hen
- Wally wo Sagase!: Ehon no Kuni no Daibouken

There is just one last Akahori soundtrack left, Final Stretch, but since I need to keep it to the five games per request limit, I'll save that for a future request. Anyways, have a good day, ruiner!!

the real SNES played at 32khz only, and the foobar plugin for it doesn't allow the sample rate to be changed. not sure why, since the same author allows the sample rates to change on almost every other game format. the only way to convert/encode a format with winamp on Windows 9 is to write it to WAV and then convert the WAV into FLAC/MP3 in a 3rd party program. of course you will lose all metadata association with the album when doing this...

Wow. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Wasn't expecting all these to get done and in one shot! I can't even be bummed about G&W Gallery 2 because of my great appreciation for everything else.

I'm especially grateful for Blinx 2. Not only have I been searching for the music for years (and a quick forum search will tell you others have too), but the quality of your rip is rich. So thank you for also doing it justice!

And I'm so glad I could introduce these soundtracks to you! They've stuck with me for years, and being that most are obscure games, it's great that the more memorable tunes can get an audience. :)

If anyone else listens to the Sega Marine Fishing soundtrack but has never played the game before, give a listen to the track that's 2:11 in length. (The stage for this theme is called The Offing, in case you want to look it up.) Its smooth tone is a highlight, especially with the genres explored in the rest of the game's soundtrack.

Thank you once again for your work, and for doing my requests!

Here are some new ones for whenever you're able to get to them. No rush!
WarioWare Smooth Moves (Wii)
Kirby's Dream Collection (Wii) - To do everything would probably be overkill. I'm just looking for the menu themes outside of the packaged content.
Fuzion Frenzy (Xbox)
TrickStyle (Dreamcast)
Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped (PSX) - Surprised this hasn't been done yet! I'd love to hear your version of the soundtrack!

TGIF! What a long freakin' week. Here's some chiptune albums to start off the weekend!

Genesis

Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon - Without even knowing the release date on this game, I was able to guess that it was out towards the end of the console's life. The sound driver must have been pretty advanced, and the instrumentation is far from your typical YM2612 stuff. With great sounding sampled drums, and lead synths that sound crystal clear, this one's very easy on the ears, and makes for a great soundtrack.

Darius II - Known is some markets as Sagaia. Pretty decent shoot 'em up music, though I think Darius Twin on the SNES still holds the title of "best Darius chiptune soundtrack" IMO. The snare sample is a bit too crunchy, which can get annoying at times, but it's still worth a listen.

Master of Weapon - Here's a vertical shooter from Taito, which was a direct port from the arcade version. The music was also ported directly from the YM2203 sound chip, which is technically inferior to the Genesis, so the music doesn't really blow me away. Some decent melodies, though.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers - the Movie - Dag, yo. This is one METAL soundtrack. Awesome stuff. Hikoshi Hashimoto worked on this, and I've seen his name popping up more and more lately in requests. makes sense, since he's spent over 20 years working as a composer/ sound designer!

The Lion King - Matt Furniss competently ported Elton John's and Hans Zimmer's tunes to the Genesis, and added some original compositions to fill out the soundtrack which fit in seamlessly. "Simba Confronts Scar" is one of the originals which works really well. The tones in the music are soft, as they are on most family games. This whole soundtrack complements the game very nicely.

NES

Stealth ATF - Not sure what to make of this one. The melodies are really good, but the sound driver kind of sucks. The notes sound like they're trying too hard to stay on beat, like those old NES titles put out by Milton Bradley.

Totally Rad - Composed by Kazuo Sawa, who you might remember from a lot of the Kunio-Kun games. So there's a lot of fun stuff here. One weird thing is that he decided to use one of the square channels as percussion, so it sounds unique and maybe a bit too loud, but see for yourself.

Whomp 'Em - Ugh, the racism in this one. Anyways, the music is really good, being from Tsukasa Tawada, who went on to do a few Pokemon titles. He also wrote the soundtrack for the first Fortified Zone.

Hey! Speaking of Fortified Zone, check out my co-host Mike's new YouTube video about it! The intro and end take place in my house, and there's a brief appearance from my wife, too. I play the bartender/ villain, and I'll have a much bigger part in next episode of the trilogy.

Couple quick hits before I head home from work:

Saru Saru Daisakusen for the PSP - The Ape Escape we never got! The music is really eclectic, with some symphonic, synth, rock, and industrial stuff. It was just a teeeeny bit over my 200mb limit, but it was good stuff, and the PSP section is really tiny, so I made an exception cuz I think everyone will like this one. :)

Mickey Mania - The Timeless Adventures of Mickey Mouse for the SNES - Another Matt Furniss Disney game! Coincidence? Probably! This one follows the themes of Mickey's famous cartoons through the ages, and the music fits the theme, like it's straight out of one of the animations.

Scud Race for the Arcade - Hand recorded for your enjoyment! There's a lot of PCM samples here, mixed with synths. Some sound pretty bad (the "Flight in the Dark" vocalist is sooooo awful) but some are pretty good.

Aight, yo! Dig 'em!

Whomp 'Em - Ugh, the racism in this one.

The funny thing about this game is that usually when a game from this era had content changed it was to make it less offensive (i.e. removing gore, religious symbols, etc.). The US version is actually more offensive though, as the original Japanese version is actually based the Chinese classic The Journey to the West. Presumably they changed it figuring Americans wouldn't get it, but how anyone thought this was a good idea I don't know.

Right, the whole Journey to the West story didn't really make it across the shores in mainstream media until... maybe Ninja Theory's Enslaved? Also, it wasn't until relatively recently (like within the past 30 years) that it was deemed in poor taste to picture Native Americans as stereotypes. We actually talked it about a bit in episode 4 of the podcast, after seeing how bad Ninja Gaiden arcade was.

Aight, yo! Dig 'em!

Awesome. Grabbing Now. Thank you so much for your hard effort.

I have another Request:

The three games of the Pokemon Ranger series, all for DS: Pokemon Ranger, Pokemon Ranger: Shadows of Almia and Pokemon Ranger: Guardian Signs; Pokemon Trozei, also for DS; and Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Sky. They all have some impressive scores, specially the Ranger games, and the rips I can find are all crappy. :P

Maybe you don't like Pokemon, but the quality of its songs is undeniable. I reserve PMD Blue Rescue Team for another request btw ;)
Please and thanks in advance!

Huge props for Saru Saru Daisakusen, Ruiner! My long quest for that game's music has now come to a close! :)

Now I have a new request, also for the PSP: Do you think you can obtain a rip for Soreyuke! Burunyan-Man Portable? (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=as44-1fjurU) It's a shmup that's actually a port of a more..... explicit PC release (in fact, the video I linked to is from said PC version, though I assure you the content here is more SFW). Anyway, while there's already an OST for the game, it's slightly incomplete (it's missing a menu theme or two, a vocal-less version of the stage 5 boss theme (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ycA0AciOsng) that plays during cutscenes, etc.). I think you'd like this game's soundtrack, BTW. Dunno if this will be harder to find than my previous Ape Escape request, but thanks in advance for trying! ;)

NSMB isn't that hard to find elsewhere, and it's a really big soundtrack, way over 200mb. The files in the pack aren't tagged, so the tracks I put up won't be either. I'm gonna have to pass on this one. The other two are no problem!

That's completely fine. I didn't know that the File Size ,because of how big the Soundtrack is, would blow up. Sorry, didn't know that.

No need to apologize! I just have to be selective about big stuff like that because my space is getting more limited by the day.

I've got some good stuff today, though! Here's what's new:

Saturn

Panzer Dragoon - I love this game. The music isn't really my cup of tea, but it's still quality symphonic stuff. Most of the music is CD audio, but I got the soundtracks from the FMV and put them at the end. Unfortunately the quality of those isn't great, but it's the best it can get.

Panzer Dragoon Zwei - The sequel used sequenced music instead of Redbook to save space on the disc, and as such, it doesn't sound as crisp as the first game. Still, there's some good tunes, and I grabbed the 3 CD audio tracks from the disc and put them at the end of the collection.

Dark Legend - Not a request, but I had a few buddies over last night and we were playing some Saturn stuff, and we decided to check this 1-on-1 fighter from Data East out. The game is mediocre, but we were really surprised at the music! It's from the same composer who did Joe & Mac, and Fighters' History Dynamite, among others. It's got a lot of Asian melodies mixed with guitar rock and some kick-ass percussion. Check this underrated gem out!

Ok, jokers! That's it for now...

So, Silent Hill 4, huh? Yeah, OK. I can do that. The SH4 soundtrack was an oddity - it came in two seperate releases. There was the Japanese 2-disc version, and the American release, which was a pre-order exclusive. Fortunately, I happen to have both:

I combined the tracks from both, and took the small amount of tracks from the game DVD, and combined all three into a big ol' album full of spooky goodness. The second disc of the Japanese release is an audio novel, so I elected not to include it.

I suppose I should complete the Silent Hill section at some point, but I've been too busy with requests and podcasts. But right now, you can grab this album in the Silent Hill Shrine at the bottom of the OP.

See ya!

So I looked at the game, figured out where the music was, extracted a compressed file that had ANOTHER compressed file in it, and I'm left with a bunch of .wav and .dat files that don't actually play any music. It's kind of a dead-end. I'm not sure I can get this one working. :(

I'm baaaaack! Time for more goodies! Ready? GO!

Arcade

Motor Raid - This one's interesting. Technically, it's pretty advanced for a YM synth based game. The music itself, however, isn't really catchy at all. The fact that some of the songs are really long just kind of makes it worse. There are some decent tracks mixed in, though, so it's worth a listen.

SNES

Tiny Toon Adventures - Buster Busts Loose - I remember playing this as a kid. It was a great game, for being licensed! The music is competent, and follows a lot of themes, based on whichever level you were playing... of course, it's got the TTA theme song, too!

F1 ROC - Dancy stuff. A bit simple, but fun. What can you expect from a racing game, anyways?

F1 ROC 2 - Oh, now this is much better. It's got more of a house music/ hardcore techno feel. I can groove to this.

Nekketsu Tairiku Burning Heroes - An RPG with some cool tunes, especially "Field (Ryu and Rouga)." It's got a nice rock 'n roll riff.

Ranma 1/2 Chonai Gekitou Hen - I remember playing the Ranma game that came out over here, and having a blast with it. This one's got some high energy Asian flare, and it's fun to listen to!

Wally wo Sagase - A Japan-only "Where's Waldo" game? Weird. Anyways, this one's got themes from all sorts of locations, from Egypt to Viking to Caveman. It's pretty laid back. I could find Waldo to this stuff. :)

Alrighty, that's the loadout for today. Enjoy!

Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon - Without even knowing the release date on this game, I was able to guess that it was out towards the end of the console's life.

Not even close. I checked out the GameFAQs entry of this game. It was released on July 8, 1994, a few years before the end of Sega Genesis' life. Just thought I help again, as always. :)

BTW, thanks for the Akahori soundtracks. Gonna listen to them! :D

Sorry my latest requests didn't seem to do much for you, Ruiner.

I had two last requests I wanted to make, at least until Rusty is uploaded (sorry again that's taken so long!). First is Tetris & Dr. Mario for the SNES. It's a combo cart of the two titular games that also features a unique Mixed Match mode. I'm not too impressed by the remakes of the Dr. Mario/Tetris tunes, but I like music for Mixed Match mode. Kinda reminds me of Earthbound. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RXROdOUyjVA)

I'd also like to see an upload of Mega Man V for the Game Boy. It's the only one of the GB Mega Man games with completely original music and levels, as the previous games cherry picked bosses from the NES games. Some solid tunes I think (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-Mf3o7oVQ4). and they don't suffer the problem of the other GB Mega Man games in that, even if the tunes are good, the NES versions are clearly superior soundwise.

No big deal! Everybody's got different tastes! And sorry about Rusty... it's like halfway done. I really REALLY hate using HOOT as it doesn't even give you a timer so you can say, "OK, this loop ended at 1 minute, so I can stop it at 2 minutes." No, you have to listen to the whole thing, try to remember where the song began originally, and stop it there. Otherwise, you need to just let it run for a crazy long time, and then try to find the loops by sight/ sound in a spectrum analyzer. So yeah, pain in the butt! But I'll get it done! It may be my last HOOT album, though! :)

So here are today's releases... lots of NES songs of varying quality, and a couple more goodies!

NES

Business Wars - Here's a game about walking around an office, doing office things, and I guess working your way up to CEO. Exciting, right? Well, let me tell you about the music! Are you prone to bouts of depression? Then don't listen to this! With the exception of track 2, this is the slowest, most plodding, most depressing soundtrack I've ever heard. It should be called Funeral: The Game.

Jajamaru Gekimaden - OK, so the Jajamaru games are all about this red ninja guy. Just so I don't have to keep repeating that. Actually, I'll just do a blanket statement here: All these games have decent music... they're action tunes with a traditional Japanese style. Nothing stands out as being spectacular, but they're certainly not bad. Here are the games:

Jajamaru Gekimaden
Jajamaru Ninpouchou
Jajamaru no Daibouken
Ninja Jajamaru - Ginga Daisakusen

DS

Mario & Luigi - Partners in Time - It's Yoko Shimomura, so how can it be bad? Koji Kondo is also credited on the files, but I believe it's because the melodies form the original Super Mario Bros are integrated throughout the game; he didn't actually have a hand in writing this one. The music is light and playful, and fun to listen to.

N64

Cruis'n World - I know the arcade version was requested, but I ripped both and determined that the N64 version was much higher quality, and also added a few extra tracks. There's a bunch of rock, some techno, and some Caribbean melodies in this one. The same composer, Vince Pontarelli, did all three Cruis'n games, and I'll upload sometime when (if) requests ever die down.

Have fun with 'em!

And it's time for your afternoon tea and music download. Served piping hot and fresh, here we go:

Kirby's Dream Collection for the Wii - Here's a huge amount of Kirby tunes from a bunch of his older games. This is a direct game rip, so it differs slightly from the OST, and I believe it has 4 extra tracks not on the CD.

Crash Bandicoot 3 - Warped! for the PSX - This one's hard to even speak about, as it's completely eclectic. All of the stages are based on the time period they're set in, and none of them sound alike. Here's a neat trivia fact: The composer, Josh Mancell, is Kid Rock's cousin. Now you know!

And finally.... the one that Elwood's been waiting for....

Rusty for the PC-98! It's taken a while, but the soundtrack sounds great, and it's tagged, too. I'm glad the music in this one rocks, because I'm just shy of being sick of hearing it right now. :) It has some really nice high-energy tracks, some solemn ones, and a few that sound a heck of a lot like Castlevania... but maybe even better! This one's a recommended download...not only because it'll make my effort worthwhile, but because it's worth listening to!

Alrighty! See ya later!

Thanks for this one Ruiner. Sorry it was such a pain to rip, but I'm glad you like it at least. The Castlevania vibe is definitely by design, as the game is very much influenced by Castlevania. Here's a couple more albums:

TrickStyle for the Dreamcast - This has some great techno tracks in it, and the game is pretty good too!

Rude Breaker for the PC-98 - Yeah, so I'm getting into PC-98 music now. I just love the soundchip! This album's a mixed bag, but the stage 1 music is some awesome chiptune metal. I really love it.

There's a little bad news, too: I've tried to squeeze the music out of WarioWare and Fuzion Frenzy for the last few days, and I've had no luck. As far as WW goes, I think the music might actually be sequenced and not streamed, which would require some crazy programming skills to extract. With FF, the file structure is all made up of files with the extension .xbp, regardless of what kind of file is it. I've tried scanning within every file (and there's a lot) to see if any known music filetypes are in them, and I've come up empty. Sorry 'bout that.

I may have more later. See ya!

POKEMON TIME! Yaaaaaaaaycoughcoughhackcough.....

*Ahem.*

Sorry, little sarcasm caught in my throat, there. :)

My opinions on those annoying little creatures aside, the music, when taken away from the games, is actually pretty good. So go grab:

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon
Pokemon Ranger - Shadows of Almia
Pokemon Ranger
Pokemon Trozei!

...all for the Nintendo DS.

On the whole, they're well-composed chiptune action songs, with some more solemn stuff for the storylines and whatnot. A lot of it will make good background music for the podcast, so at least my efforts are worthwhile. ;)

Anyways, enjoy the music!

Uppa daytah timah!

Here'sa whatta we got-ah!

Game Boy

Mega Man V - Original MM songs on the game Boy! How novel! Actually, these are pretty good. Simple tunes, but very catchy melodies.

SNES

Darius Twin - OK, I've got one word for ya: "Overdriven guitars." Wait, that's two words. Never mind. Anyways, this was one of my favorite soundtracks as a kid, and it must have gotten lost form this collection when I made the move from Dropbox to Mega. It's very Anime-inspired soundtrack, and one I've listened to since the game came out.

Stunt Race FX - I love the deep squarewave bass in these songs. It gives it such character! Shinobu Amayake also wrote the Pokemon Ranger - Shadows of Almia soundtrack, coincidentally.

Tetris & Dr. Mario - Some of the most iconic NES songs ever, slightly ruined in SNES format! There are some extra tracks here which are pretty good, though.

PC-98

Puyo Puyo Tsuu - So since there's a demand for PC-98 and I'm enjoying them a lot too, I'm gonna start adding some that I enjoy which I don't need Hoot to rip. This one's got some familiar Puyo Puyo tunes, in the similar playful style.

Starfire - A shmup which used the 9801's most advanced sound system. You wanna hear this. It's like the Genesis turned to steroids for better sound. Crazy percussion, some great FM sweep effects, and fantastic composition. A hidden gem for YM synth lovers!

OK, see ya!

Is this the last update until Monday? Only my wife will know for sure!

SNES

Run Saber - Here' a cool one that sounds like it has a slight hip hop influence, with some vocal sampled mixed in with a few of the songs.

Genesis

Curse - From a composer known only as "Shaka," this one reminds me a lot of the very bass-heavy SNES title Super EDF. It's a typical shmup soundtrack, but the emphasis on the slap bass makes it unique among other Genesis titles.

G-LOC Air Battle - A Matt Furniss album, clearly inspired by the Top Gun soundtrack. It's 80's rock/ metal/ new wave all the way!

TG-16

Batman - From Nobuyuki Hara, a longtime collaborator of Naoki Kodaka on the Sunsoft NES games. This one even shares a track or two in common with the NES Batman title! This one's pretty advanced, and uses a lot of samples that you won't normally hear in TG16 songs.

Military Madness - One from Jun Chikuma. The music was later remastered for the PSX, but kept mostly the same.

Whew. I've been busy with this today. Enjoy!

Ciao, amici!

Here's some stuuf for ya! Not requests, though... I took a bit of time to dig up some obscure treasures for you.

First off, we have Cho Ren Sha for the Sharp x68000. This system used the YM2151 chip, similar to many arcade games, most notably X-Men Arcade. This is a great soundtrack to a vertical shooter... very upbeat and dancy!

And secondly, Grounseed for the PC-98. The soundtrack comes in two flavors, OPN and OPNA. So, if you had the original YM2203 soundchip in your PC-98, you'd hear the OPN version. If you had the more advanced YM2608 chip, you'd hear the fantastic OPNA songs. The cool thing is, although there are some similar tracks between the two versions, a lot of them were original tunes depending on the chip. So, I split it into two parts. If you grab one, take the OPNA version. However, you'll probably come back to get the OPN version once you're done with it, because it's that good. :) Each version of the soundtrack is about 2 hours long, so that should last you till at least tomorrow. ;)

Enjoy!

Grounseed's definitely a great upload. I first heard about that one through this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-71FOXADTxg), which features the Shop Demo track. It was also where I first heard music from Rusty. It might be worth looking at if you're interested in looking at other PC-98/SHARP/MSX type soundtracks.

Good day to you, ruiner. :) Got five requests for you...

- Batman: Revenge of the Joker (SNES)
- Battle Master: Kyuukyoku no Senshitachi (SNES) (although it sounds similar to Power Moves, it has a different composer.)
- Fire Mustang (Genesis)
- Hagane (SNES)
- Mystical Fighter (Genesis)

Thanks again! :D

It's a Genesis party today! We got a little somethin' for everyone! Here we go!

Genesis

Columns III - Revenge of Columns - A nice, laid back soundtrack. Soft tones and nice, flowing melodies make this some perfect puzzle-game music.

Cosmic Carnage - I had this one up, not sure where it went, but here it is again!

Dangerous Seed - A Japan-only vertical shooter with some pretty intense music. Some of it sounds like it would make great hard rock/ metal songs.

Dyna Brothers 2 - About 90 minutes of good tunes. Heavier percussion, good use of stereo effects, and lots of variety in this one.

Earthworm Jim 2 - One of Tommy Tallarico's most famous soundtracks. Notable for its huge reliance on PCM samples which added voices and realistic instruments to the mix. The songs don't always loop properly, and that's because they didn't in the game either. Why, you ask? No idea, really. Just letting you know. :)

Fatal Fury - The Genesis version kind of pales in comparison to the Neo-Geo arcade soundtrack, but it's not bad for a Genesis title. The snare hits are nice, and kind of bring the quality up a bit.

Golden Axe - Pretty simple stuff. Catchy melodies, but it's the YM2612 at it's most basic soundset.

Golden Axe II - Now we're getting somewhere. This is a lot more grand, and is even in stereo (in parts!) I think this is my favorite GA soundtrack.

Golden Axe III - I like this one too, but it uses a few too many static-laden samples in the songs, which are distracting. Still better than the first one, though, :)

MSX

Starship Rendezvous - Here's Hitoshi Sakimoto and Masaharu Iwata getting their metal riffs on, with the MSX chipset! Intense and fun stuff.

PC-88

Illusion City - Everything I've read about this game basically makes it sound like a direct ripoff of Snatcher without actually saying it is. The music even has that 80's urban vibe that Kojima's classic does. It's a decent score, but a bit too muddy at times.

OK, that's a bunch of tunes. Hope you like 'em!

The Rusty PC-98 OST is about 15% too fast, the original hardware didn't output at that speed usually. I tried my friend's disc of the game on a few systems and they all play slower.

I recorded that album with HOOT player, which is supposed to be extremely accurate. There aren't any options to slow the music down in the player, so I can't do anything about that. The music seems on pace with playthroughs of the game on YouTube, so maybe some hardware does play it a bit faster. *shrug*

The playthroughs on YouTube seem to be emulated, and my Hoot plays the soundtrack much slower. I guess Hoot isn't completely accurate then. Whatever, it doesn't matter anyway.

Thanks for uploading it though, this thread is fricking awesome.

Haunted Grounds - Rip not available/ sequenced files haven't bee extracted from game
Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? - Licensed music from show, don't wanna do that stuff (Like Crazy Taxi)
One Piece Grand Battle 2 - Sequenced files not ripped.

Everything else seems to be OK. :)

Also in this episode: Mike can’t get his mind out of the gutter! Ed gets all sappy about childhood gaming memories! We also bring Katamari Damacy to life in a hilarious spoof commercial!

The Tracklist:

1. The Terminator (Sega CD) – “Future Shock” - Tommy Tallarico/ Bishan Shaheer
2. Joe Montana Football (Sega CD) – “Intro Theme” – Spencer Nilsen
3. Half Life 2 – “CP Violation + Remix” – Kelly Bailey
4. Half Minute Hero (PSP) – “Main Theme” – Toshihiko Takamizawa

I loved Astal when i was a kid! I haven't played that game in ages. We have no plans of stopping the podcast, so I'm sure we'll do something from it eventually! I'm glad you're enjoying it so far... we're already hard at work on Episode 7. We're planning on doing music from shoot 'em ups, so you KNOW there will be some excellent stuff.

Only a couple soundtracks today, as I've been busy... here is:

Death by Degrees for the PS2 - A fighting game starring Nina Williams from Tekken. The music was composed by Kazuhiro Nakamura, who wrote a lot of music for Tekken 6.

P.N. 03 for the Game Cube - Some excellent electronica. This one is great driving music. I think you'll enjoy it!

Anybody going to watch the Smash Bros. Nintendo Direct tonight? I'm really excited to see new stuff!

The afternoon's goodies are here. Take a gander:

PSX

Crash Bash - A relativley simple and playful collection of tunes. It's very MIDI-sounding, but easy on the ears.

PS2

One Piece grand Battle 3 - Decent production and a heavy percussion make some of the more bland melodies in this one come to life.

DS

Spectrobes 1 and 2 - I guess these are sci-fi games made by Disney. The music's OK... typical action video game stuff.

Game Center CX - I've watched a whole bunch of these shows. The game is pretty fun, too! The music is a collection of soundtracks from the mini games in the game, each sounding like old-school Nintendo stuff. It's worth a listen because some of the themes are super catchy. Unfortunately I can't do the sequel because it's 4 1/2 hours long.

There ya go! I should have some good SNES and Genesis stuff tomorrow!

Forgot to say:
I was very happy that you included God Hand in your beatemup episode, and you even did it twice! Awesome!

But i was shocked that you mentioned Takada as "Umbrella Chronicles and No More Heroes" composer in first place :( It's wroooooong, it's like saying "hey, you know Akira Yamaoka by Sine Mora or Lollipop Chainsaw" ;(

Masafumi Takada's true talent was achieved when he worked at pre-No More Heroes 2 Grasshopper Manufacture, and, of course, most notable steps were "The Silver Case" and "Killer7". Anyway, i'm glad that you liked his Umbrella Chronicles soundtrack (with some magic of Jun Fukuda). And don't forget absolutely beautiful Fatal Frame IV music and his Danganronpa score.

Main theme of "Moonlight Syndrome" (first Grasshopper Manufacture game), it's one of my fav main themes ever. Such atmospheric techno with some surreal feel, and that relaxing guitar at the end.

Moonlight Syndrome OST #1 - Moonlight Syndrome (Main Theme) - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZyn-1EWuWQ)

"Morishimo Tokio" from Silver Case. Such a brightful, jazzy track.

The Silver Case OST #3 - Morishima Tokio - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BF1Sehb_LRU)

"Moon" from Silver Case. Imho, it's as strong as Laura Palmer's theme from Twin Peaks. And, btw, what time signature is used here for piano notes? hehehe

The Silver Case OST #18 - Moon - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s4v1gFxw914)

And cool remix for it...it's like flying in endless space among the stars that are starring at you with some bizzare smile...

Kohei & His Computer Band - Moon (Silver Case Remix) - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z0jB6AYvjfM)

And then comes "Flower, Sun, and Rain" which, in my opinion, is a game with one of the coolest plots in games ever. Takada and co. mainly did arranges for classic music there, though some original stuff too.

Flower Sun and Rain OST - Gymnopdie No. 1 - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l0bKaqx7cFg)

Flower, Sun and Rain intro - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=juRhRiFqVo4)

Well, Killer7, that was the breakthrough of GHM. Goichi Suda, Shinji Mikami, Masafumi Takada and Jun Fukuda, Akihiko Ishizaka (that was very important guy - he was and art director in old GHM games) - they created "Revolver" of Guy Ritchies in videogame world.

Killer 7 - Soundtrack 49 Elegant Petal - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XcvscETJkuE)

Killer7 - Tecks Mecks (OST) - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kNIlClYUp5M)

Killer7 OST "Sweet Blue Flag - AYAME BLACKBURN" - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0PYXGHV8EkE)

Well, i wont touch Blood+, God Hand, Samurai Champloo and other Takada's works besides Fatal Frame IV because it's too beautiful:

Fatal Frame 4 soundtrack-The Tsukimori Song - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qft36hUnpr0)

Fatal Frame 4 soundtrack-Costume Change - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0grF5chwtCA)

Fatal Frame 4 soundtrack-Pipe Organ Ambience - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=louAGtmptqY)

Fatal Frame 4 soundtrack-The Whimpers of Hell - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wAZlCQ1RP7Y)

Fatal Frame 4 soundtrack-The Tsukimori Song (Pipe Organ) - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sCvkMYy75kg)

Am i hot-headed Takada & early Suda fan?.. heh

Haha, wow! You're quite the fan! To be honest, I'd never even heard of The Silver Case because it hasn't come out in the US and I don't have a 3DS. I was going by the games that I'd think the majority of our audience would know, like Umbrella Chronicles, because the majority of our fans aren't super VGM experts like we are. ;) We try to talk like the audience has no idea who these composers are, because most of them don't - they're people who follow us on Twitter and Facebook, not FFShrine. I'm glad you gave me that little history lesson, though! I've listened to some of the tracks and they're amazing! I'll have to go through them all!

Hi Ruiner, I wanted to make a request for something I only just now remembered existed: the PC-Engine version of Shin Megami Tensei (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5v7lBOunLig). Watching some vids online I think I like these versions of the songs a bit better than the SNES version. For comparison's sake, the songs in the video are "Embassy," "Jakyou" and "Fusion" in your SNES upload.

Also I wanted to request the SNES version of Addams Family Values (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mi8W0NAYTzU). I originally requested the Genesis version of the game awhile back, since that was the version I remembered playing a bit. But while the SNES version is basically the same game, it has sounds quite a bit different. I like the Genesis' dark synthy sounds, but the SNES is quite good as well.

ruiner9

Time for some music. It's about time, right? Alrighty!

SNES

Battle Master - You CANNOT expect me to believe that the composer who wrote this soundtrack isn't the same one who wrote Power Moves. They sound practically identical! The soundfonts are the same, the melodies and tempo are the same... heck, I don't know if I'd be able to tell them apart if you played them back to back! I think "J.S.P." is just a pseudonym for Hideki Suzuki.

Batman: Revenge of the Joker - David Whittaker took some of Naoki Kodaka, Nobuyuki Hara, and Shinichi Seya's tunes from the NES version and SNESified them. I gotta say, the Sunsoft bass sounds pretty good in 16-bit!

Hagane - Is it "hay-gain?" Or maybe "Hah-Ganni?" Nope! It's pronounced "hah-gah-NAY." It means "The inner layer of hard steel forming the cutting edge of the blade on a sword," just in case you were wondering. Anyways, the music is OK. It's traditional Japanese with some faster beats in parts. Not really my thing, but I guess it would be OK if you enjoy this genre.

Genesis

Fire Mustang - Simple Genesis shooter music. Actually sounds kind of sloppy in parts (like the Stage 2 theme) but the boss music is where it's at.

Mystical Fighter - Simple, but VERY catchy grooves. Most of the stage BGMs will have you involuntarily nodding your head along with the beat. I've beaten this game before, and the music is the only thing redeeming about this title. :)

OK fellas, I'm out!

Some new stuff in the OP today!

TG16/ PCE-CD

Shin Megami Tensei - Similar to the SNES version, but with a few CD tracks to round it out. Some people like one more than the other... which one is YOUR favorite?

NES

Deep Dungeon 3 - Yuushi heno Tabi - Quite a simple soundtrack. Sounds like your typical medieval themed stuff, but there's no percussion to speak of.

Deep Dungeon IV - Kuro no Yōjutsushi - This one's a bit better, IMO. More coherent melodies and some tunes that stand the test of time. Shame it's so short!

OK guys, with the exception of the few requested by parrothead1983, I'm caught up. I'm taking the weekend off from requests. I might upload a few of my own discoveries, since I only get to do that, like, once every other month. Sound good? Good! Peace!

You are correct on Battle Master. System Vision Co. Ltd. developed both Battle Master for Toshiba EMI and Power Moves for Kaneko Co. Ltd. Hideki Suzuki composed the music on both of those games.

I agree- David Whittaker did a good job converting the original NES soundtrack to Batman: Revenge of the Joker to the SNES.

I love Hagane's soundtrack, and the game- I find it to be the best platformer ever made for the SNES.

Kazunori Hideya, one of my all time favorite composers at my favorite action game developer, NMK did the soundtrack to that one.

KID Co. Ltd. developed Mystical Fighter for the Genesis.

Yeah, because I was like "Wait, what are these songs? I know every song in this game, so what are these?" And then I heard the JP title theme and it all clicked.

Okay, I have a request now. Can you try Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko for the PSX? The only rip I've ever found of it was non-looped and kinda s**t quality.

The best I can do for this is the N64 version. The soundtrack is the same music, but it might sound slightly different because it's on a different console.

Whatever you can do, man. I've never actually heard the N64 versions of the songs (never had the N64 ver., just the PSX version), so it'll be interesting to hear!

OK, well Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko is now up in the N64 section. It's a nice playful soundtrack with a bunch of ethnic themes. It's not tagged, so if anyone knows the song names, list them out and I'll add them in.

Enjoy it!

It sounds pretty interesting actually when comparing the two sets. Obviously the PS tracks are higher quality, but the N64 ones have their own charm to them (LOVE the pirate theme!!). By the way, I noticed there's one track missing, from the second secret level, "Braveheartless", which was based on Akuji the Heartless. I wonder if it's because they took that level out from the N64 version (like I said, I've only ever played the PSX version of Gex 3).

Akuji was only released on the PSX, so it would make sense that that level would have been exclusive to that system. The reason I can't do the PSX version is because it's sequenced audio, and to rip that from a game takes some pretty high-level coding knowledge. The ripper would turn the soundtrack into kind of a MIDI file, which I can then convert. Sometimes when multiple versions of a game is released (Like Gex 3) and someone rips one version, the other one isn't done because the music is similar.

Yeah, partly for availability of the source files, and also because this forum is laden with PS3 and X360 stuff, and I wanted to have a place where people could reliably download older music where the links didn't expire after a month.

It definitely sounds more rich to me. This actually gives me the idea to do a podcast of only expansion-audio NES games. :)

Ooh, THAT pisses me off!! Especially if I lose the files or something when my computer crashes and I wanna get it back, but then OH LOOK IT'S GONE. And the uploader sometime isn't always willing to reupload. THAT annoys me, so I'm glad a place like this exists on these forums, because this forum is pretty much where I get ALL of my game music nowadays!!

None of the DKC on GBA games have been turned into GSF format for me to rip yet. It stinks, because I'd really like to have them to complete the DK set! Oh well. :(

D'oh! Foiled again! :( But I'll at least give this one more shot: You think you can get Iridion II, (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UK2AkveOoGM) which is also for the GBA? Been searching for this one for a particularly long time.....

Guys! I'm back! Did you miss me?

Podcast Episode 7 has been recorded, and it's pretty funny. Wait till you hear the Zero Wing commerical!

Anyways... a few things today:

For the arcade, four very obscure games from TAD, which was an offshoot of Data East. Sky Smasher, Legionnaire, Heated Barrel, and Blood Bros. is in the OP! None of them are that great, but if you wanna check any of them out, check Legionnaire. It's the best of them. They all use the same ancient YM3812 soundchip, which is just really rough sounding, to me. Coincidentally, it's what the arcade version of Zero Wing used, too.

And one SNES title - Addams Family Values. Keith Tinman wrote this one, and he's one of the better western composers. It's very atmospheric and dark, with great use of stereo effects. Check it out.

OK, guys! I'll have more tomorrow!

Hello again, ruiner. I have five more requests again...

- Last Battalion (Sharp X6800) or Street Combat (SNES; if Last Battalion isn't rippable)
- Shin Megami Tensei II (SNES)
- Shin Megami Tensei: if... (SNES)
- Spider-Man: Lethal Foes (SNES)
- XZR II (PC-88) (I know that there is the MSX version, which I requested before, but this time, I want to hear what the tracks sound like with the OPNA soundchip)

Anyways, thank you once again!! :D

Thanks for this.

One thing I can appreciate about the Addams Family Values soundtrack, Genesis and SNES, is that both are quality while being quite different in sound. Oftentimes when you have a game like this that's (mostly) the same across both consoles, either the sound will be pretty much identical, or the Genesis version will be noticeable inferior, mostly just badly trying to imitate the SNES version. Good example for my point: Aaahh!!! Real Monsters. Not a good game or soundtrack for either system really, but, well listen to the opening stage in the SNES version (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tYaagoVEuaM). Not amazing, but decent enough and kinda fitting. Now listen to the same part on the Genesis (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4QlWA9FwxiE).

What I like about the Addams Family Values soundtracks is that they both work towards their respective system's strengths, rather than the Genesis version just sounding like it's haphazardly trying to plink out the faux-orchestral sounds of the SNES.

Very interesting. Dark symphonic music in the SNES version, and chamber/ baroque music in the Genesis. Each works pretty well. And you're right, it really benefits the game when the music plays to the console's strengths. I'm reminded of Spider man & the X-Men in Arcade's Revenge's completely awesome SNES title music (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y8Q0s95SRXM) and the horrifying Genesis version of it (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0Vlbk5lgn0). But then again, both Super Turrican and Mega Turrican had the same music on each system and they both sounded good. I guess it's all in the hands of the composers!

Is that possible that he sometimes uses "stock" licensed music?

While it sounds vaguely similar, I don't think there's any stock music in HL2. For one, if they did use it, they'd have to credit it or the people who made the original track would sue... And two, the music wouldn't have ever come out on an OST. I think it's more likely that the REVERSE is true: everybody knows Half Life 2, so perhaps the artists of that track were inspired by CP violation? Who knows! Either way, it's a great piece of music.

Not cp violation, another one of course, I don't remember which one

Credit? Stock music doesn't require that, royalty free

Anyway I m sure in this case with this "financial " sound set Kelly was the original one. THOUGH I remember its not the first case when someone found out similarities between hl music and commercial music libraries , I just don't have better examples now

Oh, OK! I misunderstood. There are thousands of royalty-free and paid-license sample banks available on the internet, and composers will often use those samples in their songs. I can think of at least a few times I've run across samples in a download where I've heard parts that were use in Fuzion Frenzy or some other PS2 games. As long as both Kelly Bailey and the guys from Smashtrax are using those samples legally, then nobody's in the wrong, and nobody's copied from anybody. But obviously, if Bailey created the instrument melody and Smashtrax took it without permission, then there's a legal issue. The fact that Valve hasn't pursued any action against them means to me that there's no fault here; just two artists using samples from the same bank.

Big things today! First up, new promo photos for the podcast! Second, lots of tunes! Here's what's new!

SNES

Top Gear, Top Gear 2, and Top Gear 3000 - Since I was doing one, I figure why not the other two? Some sweet techno music from excellent Western composers.

Shin Megami Tensei 2 and Shin Megami Tensei - If... - Both from Tsukasa Masuko, so you know it's gotta be good! Excellent composition, and a little of everything in these two albums.

Street Combat - Irem's laughable attempt at a one-on-one fighter. The music is simple too, but kind of reminds me of Hiyamuta's work (Super R-Type, Undercover Cops). There's no known composer, so I guess we'll never know.

Spider-Man - Lethal Foes - It's a rare case of a Japanese sound team making music for a Marvel game! I wish I could say that it turned out OK. They used the same sound fonts as Hebereke's Popoitto, which is a good set, but it's far more suited to the dance music in that game, rather than the pseudo-70's rock they attempted to do in this one. Oh well. Can't win 'em all, right?

PSX

R-Type Delta - An interesting soundtrack in that it would switch on the fly in the game depending on if your ship was underwater, close to the ground, or up in the clouds. So in the game, you'd never hear the full versions of all of the expertly-crafted electronic songs. Well, here they are! If anyone can tag the titles on this one, it would be cool, because I don't know the names of the stages.

GBA

F-Zero Maximum Velocity - Little bit of rock, little bit of electronic, and a lot of crazy drum fills, and you have this game's album.

Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga - Yoko Shimomura's on this one, same as the other portable Mushroom Kingdom RPG's.

PC-88

XZR II - Are you guys sick of this soundtrack yet? Here's the third and final version! This one is for the OPNA-enabled PC-88, so at least it's the best-sounding of the three.

13 albums today! No wonder I'm frazzled. Hope you enjoy them!

I certainly appreciate more SMT, and the GBA titles are a bit nostalgic for me, so thanks for those.

I had two somewhat odd requests:
For the NES, Friday the 13th. Yes, the game kinda sucks and there's barely any music in it, good or otherwise. But I have a soft spot for the player select/cabin music (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UEgEAQ2J5wI). Simple, but nice, and a song I remember hearing quite a bit as a kid as I desperately tried to make any progress in that game.

Second is a bit weirder: the GB Memory for the Game Boy. It was a Japan only flash memory cart for the Game Boy released through Nintendo Power. The menu music is pretty catchy (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3lQMqLtnFY), and it would make for a unique upload.

Street Combat was actually a localization of a Ranma 1/2 title. Irem's only real attempt was Perfect Soldiers (a.k.a. Superior Solders).

Anyway, a few more requests:

Zero Team (Arcade) - Perhaps composed by Go Sato (Raiden franchise).
Seibu Cup Soccer (Arcade) - Same as above.
Magical Chase (GBC) - A lower-quality version of the TG-16 soundtrack.
Makeruna! Makendou (Super NES) - This game was actually developed by Affect and originally published by DATAM Polystar.
Makeruna! Makendou 2 (Super NES and PS1) - The Super NES version was developed by Success and Opus, while the PS1 version was developed by Fill-in-Cafe.
Makeruna! Makendou Z (PC-FX) - The very last game developed by Fill-in-Cafe. They had to develop on this console not many people are interested in, because of their relationship with NEC.
