Hi again! I was wondering if it would be possible if you could do the soundtrack from Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland and Color Changing Tingle's Love Balloon Trip, both DS games. I really can't find them anywhere.

Yes. Shouldn't be a problem.

@Ruiner9 I'll send you some sweet stuff if I can. btw how the hell do you manually loop a song say to play the song two times and then fade out because I want to do that with some of the arcade music I've got.

There's a couple ways. The first is to just let the song play twice while you're wave logging it, then let it go another 5 to 10 seconds so that you can fade it later. The other way is to stop recording EXACTLY at the end of the first loop, then cut and paste them together later, adding another 10 seconds of the loop after that for the fade. Obviously, the first way is easier. ;)

To do the cuts and fades, you need to use a wave editor. Personally, I use Sony Sound Forge, but that's pretty expensive. Audacity is a good free alternative.

Another great Hideki Naganuma soundtrack is his work on the Sonic Rush game for DS. Talk about funky! Have you heard it, Ruiner9? Maybe I'll make it a request, although to be honest, I already have it and listen to it all the time!

Also, Need for Speed High Stakes for PS1 and PC. One of the best Techno soundtracks ever.

And finally: Yu-Gi-Oh Tag Force 5 for PSP.

Hey, Ruiner, thanks for the Ys soundtracks! Anyway, I'm here to add another little contribution this time around: So I looked over at your Genesis/MD section and noticed that it lacked Battle Mania (http://www.sendspace.com/file/096epg) (aka Trouble Shooter overseas) and its Japan-only sequel, Battle Mania Daiginjou! (http://www.sendspace.com/file/r8ias2) I definitely believe these soundtracks (and their respective games) should not be overlooked! And so for now, I say adieu! ;)

It's update time! Got a collection of good stuff today... so here goes!

SNES

Ys IV - Mask of the Sun and Ys V - Ushinawareta Sunano Miyako Kefin - Two amazing soundtracks! Ys has always been known for it's fantastic music, and these won't disappoint. I still prefer Ys III over anything, but that's probably because I grew with it. These are must-adds to your collection.

DS

Freshly Picked - Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland - Do you feel that? It's like a... sparkly sensation. It's a Tingle! Oh, so here's Legend of Zelda side-character Tingle's first outing on the DS. It's a touch-based adventure/ rpg of sorts, with music that fits the bill. Kind of wacky, and with a lot of short jingles. Some of the music is sequenced, while others are streamed.

Tingle's Balloon Fight - Not requested, but I figure I'd throw it in for completeness's sake. A short soundtrack. The composer is uncredited except for the Balloon Fight theme, which you may know as the work of thread-favorite Hirokazu Tanaka.

Ripened Tingle's Balloon Trip of Love or Irodzuki Tincle no Koi no Balloon Trip - I can see why this soundtrack is hard to find... 240+ tracks and 5 hours long! Yikes! Most tracks are short jingles so there's a lot of variety here, including so throwbacks to other games from Nintendo and... Sega? Hmmm.

Xbox

Midtown Madness 3 - Here's a surprise! I've been trying new games out on the Xbox I got after Christmas, and was thrilled by the music in this game. It's fun techno... very catchy, with horn sections and bright melodies. Here's a challenge: listen to the first 40 seconds of the first track, and if you're not smiling and bobbing your head, I'll post a pic of me with a shoe on my head. OK, maybe not really, but seriously... download this one. The music is by Olof Gustafsson, who I had never heard of, but Wikipedia says this:

Olof Gustafsson (also known as Blaizer / The Silents) is a Swedish video game music composer. He started doing music for a demogroup called The Silents. Several members of this group decided to go into game development, and started Digital Illusions. Gustafsson joined them, and did the music for most of their early games. In 2005, he left Digital Illusions to start a new company, called Motherlode Studios, later known as EPOS Game Studios AB. He has also contributed tracks to the Merregnon CDs.
In 2003, the demoscene saw a surprise return of Blaizer in the TBL demo Magia. He has continued to provide music for TBL demos ever since.

Seems like an interesting dude to start following.

So, enjoy the awesome stuff I just put up, and make it a great day!

Starshot (: Space Circus Fever) - N64

I have the game and it's pretty painful to play but music is kinda fun in its quirkiness.

Yeah, I agree. Bad game, decent music.

Wooo! So glad to see we're up and running again! I got a lot of stuff done the past couple days, so I'll be uploading and posting it over the weekend. :)

So Lefance, bad news. There's no source files for Starshot at this time. :( I believe it may be in the works by those that create them so I'll keep my eye out for it.

However, there's lots of good news! A whole bunch of updates today that I've been working on during the outage. So, here we go!
(Please excuse lack of descriptions on some as there's a lot and I'm short on time today.)

Genesis

Battle Mania (Trouble Shooters) & Battle Mania Daiginjō - Two shmups from Vic Tokai with excellent music. If you love the Genesis synths, definitely grab these! Thanks, MarvelB, for the conversions! (I did some minor mastering/ fading.)

Global Gladiators Featuring Mick and Mack - A McDonald's sponsored game. It wasn't that great, but it gave Dave Perry the money to make Earthworm Jim, so it was worth it. The soundtrack is from Tommy Tallarico. Whatever you do... do NOT listen to the track titled "Story Line." Your ears will bleed. I warned you.

Nobunaga's Ambition Collection

There's a bunch of these:

Nobunga No Yaboo - Ranseiki - Xbox
Nobunga No Yaboo - Sengoku Gunyuuden - Saturn
Nobunga No Yaboo - Soutensoku with Power Up Kit - PSP
Nobunga's Ambition - Iron Triangle - PS2
Nobunga's Ambition - Rise to Power - PS2

All of them are quite similar in sound - Classical Japanese music with heroic overtones.

Arcade

SAR - Search and Rescue - An SNK game with some simple BGM.
Teddy Boy Blues - A Sega game with about 3 minutes of music.

Dreamcast

Tech Romancer - A neat fighting game. There's a lot of music in this one, which has a Japanese action game feel to it.

Game Boy

Vattle Giuce - I have no idea what this game was supposed to be called, but I'm assuming something got lost in translation. Battle Juice? Vat of Juice? Cattle Poops? Who knows. The music is pretty good, though!

SNES

Donkey Kong Country - I'm pretty sure I had this up at one point, but I think it got lost. It's back!

Spider-Man and the X-Men in Arcade's Revenge - Again, this one got lost. I'm realizing now that all the Tim Follin SNES stuff broke during the migration to MEGA and I need to fix them, so I'll be doing that shorty.

NES

Arumana no Kiseki - An NES games! Whoa! This one was Kinuyo Yamashita's next project after finishing the original NES Castlevania title. Her music sounds really similar in this game, so it's neat to hear it... like the CV soundtrack that got lost. There's not a whole lot of music, but what's there is pretty good.

OK! That should have made up for the break in time! I've got like one more old, old, old, request to do (Wrestle War) and then the newer requests will start. Also, I'm happy to announce that I'll soon be doing my very own VGM PODCAST with my pal Miketendo! We had a blast doing the YouTube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RwnBpApFrXo&feature=c4-overview&list=UU2bSOJ9eRclCrP1giYFky2w) together, so we're going to team up and do a bi-weekly hour-long show. We'll play and talk about the music we love, do some comedy skits, and hopefully have some special guests from the video game scene, as well as some people who work in the industry! The first show should be up next week, and I'll put links in the OP as they're uploaded. We really hope you enjoy them!

Big things are happening! :)

I should be able to do those. As far as TPK files go, here (http://forum.xentax.com/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=9736) is all I can find on it. It's a compressed file of some sort, and it seems like they were able to open it, but I don't know how.

And I'll need some more info about the ISO. What game? What system? What does the file structure look like?

Ok here is some info on the Gallop Racer 2001 ISO i have.
Here's the files I extracted from the ISO in descending order
gr5.dat
ioprp214.img
iopsys.irx
libsd.irx
mcman.irx
mcserv.irx
padman.irx
sio2man.irx
SLUS_202.55
SYSTEM.CNF
The game is on the PS2 and was released by Koei. I think that the music files must be in DAT file somewhere since it's the biggest at 760,696 KB, which means it probably has all the game data in it. Problem is I can't figure out how to open up the thing and I've already tried using VLC to open it. I can just send you the files too.

ruiner9
01-24-2014, 06:57 PM
That's a common file structure. The .irx files are basically drivers to interface with the PS2 hardware, and the .dat file contains all of the game's binary data. Somebody would need to figure out a way to explore the file, figure out which addresses each song was located in, and then code an extractor that will be able to take those files out. That's way beyond my capabilities, though. You may want to ask in the Xentax forum that I linked you to in my previous post. Those guys are the ones who specialize in that kind of thing.

01-24-2014, 07:17 PM
Thanks for the info my man and I'm definitely not going to bother with this file anymore that's for sure. Can you tell me how this file system works?
list of files extracted from ISO:
gr7_dmy.pss
gr7irx.dil
gr7irx.hil
img_bd.bin
ioprp280.img
SLUS_210.31
SYSTEM.CNF
I think that all of the music is in the img_bd.bin file and the process to get might be the same as the Gallop Racer 2001 Game, but I'm not sure. Also for the PS2. Also would I be able to open the img_bd.bin file by creating a cue file for it or does that not work?

ruiner9
01-24-2014, 07:34 PM
All .bin means is binary. It could be in a number of different formats. You probably won't have much luck making a cue file for it, but it won't hurt to try. My first rule when looking for audio on a disc is to start with the largest file size first, then I'll check the vgmstream plugin readme file to see if that type is supported. Then I'll try the smaller files. If all of that fails, I'll use a search engine for the file extensions I have along with the name of the console or the game's title to see if anyone else has had any luck. I all of that fails... Well, I move on, cuz there's not much I can think of after that.

We've posted episode 1 of our new VGM podcast, PixelTunes Radio (https://www.facebook.com/pixeltunesradio)! We're just setting our Facebook page up now, but be sure to like it and grab episode 1. We're excited to hear your feedback!

This week, we focus on some well-known video game composers:

David Wise
Yuzo Koshiro
Kinuyo Yamashita
Tommy Tallarico
Tim Follin

We play some music from the games that they're famous for, and some tracks from games that aren't as well-known. We've also thrown in our particular brand of comedy in the form of parody commercials for Castlevania and Battletoads!

(I also throw a little shout out to our forum thread at the end.) :)

Enjoy the show!

He left Kemco in 1998. Since then he seems to have done pretty well; he's still working hard in the industry.

By the way, you can follow Masuno on his Twitter: @HiroyukiMasuno. He doesn't seem to have updated it recently, though.

That's too bad. I wish he would've stayed over at Kemco, so that way he would've composed the Batman Beyond games for them.

@Evolution01

Dude that seems like a petty reason to dislike someone just because they like something you strongly dislike. (If that's what you meant by that statement). I also mostly agree with what ruiner9 is saying but, I think it also depends on your attitude toward that person when you criticize them for the thing they like. Being a asshole is going to make people hate you a lot more then if you politely disagree with them.

I see. Well, I can forget being around people then since everyone on the Net except me takes that rule, no- law into precedent.

I was using the exact same version of both. Weird. I meant to say that perhaps dropping to down to 5.65 would solve your 2sf errors, since I'm not getting them. Which games are causing the issues? I can try to duplicate it on my setup.

Has anyone checked the podcast out, yet? I'd love to hear your thoughts! :)

And now.... for some UPDATESSSSSSSSS!!!!!! Woo!

Game Boy

Cave Noire - This one is surprisingly cool. It's from Konami, and really has that Konami NES feel to it, but takes a little more advantage of the better GB audio hardware. Worth a listen, for sure.

Project S-11 - Primarily composed by Jonne Valtonen, who was a former PC demoscene music writer turned orchestral arranger extraordinaire. This soundtrack is experimental, dancy, and far beyond the scope of what the simple shmup it came packaged with called for. This is a must-add to your collection, and it'll be seeing some play on the podcast soon.

PC-88/ MSX

Knightmare 2 - The Maze of Galious - The MSX had a very crisp, clean sound to it, and it comes through well in these tunes. I really enjoyed them.

Genesis

Wrestle War - Not a lot of music in this one, but what's there is catchy and has a nice rhythm to it.

Sega CD

Eternal Champions CD - I really liked this soundtrack as a kid. There's a little bit of everything, written to suit the fighter's personality and their fighting stages. There's some techno for the futuristic fighters, some metal for the cave-dude, and some good ol' fashioned grunge for the secret service guy. It's worth a listen.

And that is it for now! Haven't updated much over the weekend because I was working on the podcast, but there will be a bunch more stuff over the next few days. :)

I'm glad you're enjoying my recommendations. As far as the MSX goes, the real quality picks (both as far as games and music) comes from Konami. They made most of the big titles for the system.

If it's not too much trouble, could I add one more request to the pile? Spirou for the Game Boy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FUkrILEw6fk). Another Alberto Gonzalez composition. A song from it popped up on my Tumblr feed recently and (unsurprisingly) it's pretty good.

Hey, GREAT thread and GREAT work on this!
I was just wondering if you'd be interested in doing stereo mixes of the SNES Arcana and Alcahest soundtracks?

Well it's Jun Ishikawa, composer of one of my favorite soundtracks of all time: Hyper Zone for the SNES! Arcana and Alcahest, two excellent action-RPG soundtracks, are now in the SNES section. Alcahest is a little faster paced and a bit darker, while Arcana has a more traditional RPG sound to it. Both are great albums.

Also, on the Game Boy, we have Raging Fighter, which kind of reminds me of the TMNT titles, and World Circuit Series, which sounds pretty unique due to it's use of the square wave channel for the bass in a lot of songs, rather than the triangle wave. It gives it a much grittier sound.

And last, on the PSX, Need For Speed - High Stakes. Some excellent techno by a number of different artists. the quality is less than optimal because of the PSX's lousy audio compression capabilities, but it's still worth a listen.

Enjoy! :)

I am a HUGE fan of Ishikawa's work and I'm really excited to hear the soundtrack for the new Kirby game.
I wish he would get another opportunity to score a medieval fantasy game like Arcana or Alcahest again, though, because they give him room to stretch and try different styles and make darker, more dramatic music instead of trying to be upbeat and happy-sounding all the time. Hyper Zone's soundtrack is fantastic, too.

Dude did you actually read what I just said because I think you misunderstood what I typed down. You can criticize someone's taste (as long as you're not a dick about it) if you want to. all I'm saying is it's a dumb/petty reason to dislike someone just because they like something you don't. Shit, there's better reasons to dislike someone like there's horrible person or that dude's a fucking murderer. Also, how the hell do you even make friends with that kind of attitude. Seriously, is it like they say they like some boy band you strongly dislike and then all of the sudden you're like we're done being friends buddy. Also trying not to be a dick here just to let you know.

Ok, let me put this to bed because it seems both of you are totally misinterpreting.

Suppose every day you walk into a cafeteria and get a can of Coke from a vending machine. Every day, some rude guy walks by your table and says "Coke sucks! Pepsi is the best!" Are you going to start liking Pepsi? No, you're going to start disliking the guy who keeps being rude to you.

When I started this thread, I had a couple of bad experiences with some trolls who would rant on and on about how my music sucked because it wasn't recorded directly from an NES. Instead of them changing my mind about what was best, all it did was make me dislike them as people.

If you wanna hate people because they like a band you don't like Evolution01, go right ahead, but you'll probably end up pretty lonely. All of my friends have different tastes and it makes our conversations more interesting. It had nothing to do with my quote anyways.

Honestly, PS1 rips don't sound that great because of lousy compression. The original OST's for those games exist, and you're probably better off tracking those down.

I might have to disagree with you there because most PS1 rips I've heard have sounded pretty good and I'm not even that much of an audiophile. Anyway I wanted to share some links with you to some awesome sites that have TONS of video game music.
1. UnExoticA - ExoticA (http://www.exotica.org.uk/wiki/UnExoticA) - Is a huge archive of amiga music (like over 1,500 soundtracks are listed there) and it's all taken straight from the CD itself so it's pretty accurate in terms of how it really sounded on the console. Only potential problem all of the soundtracks are in there native format so you'll need to convert all of them to MP3
2. Home ~ Hoot Archive (http://snesmusic.org/hoot/v2/) - Here's another huge archive of video game music, but this time it's all Japanese computer game music. It includes music from the PC-Engine, MSX, Sharp X680000/X1, and even the IBM PC. There's alot of music there and I think you'll like alot of it.
There's the two links you and others can check out if you haven't already.
Also, I totally got what you'll quote meant my words were directed at Evolution01, not you.

Awesome! I'm familiar with HOOT. A few of my albums were recorded from Hoot Player, but it just takes so long to rip and record that I haven't done much with it, though. UnExoticA is really cool, though... lots more stuff I can play on the podcast! Thanks!

So, I gave it a shot and tried a DDR conversion, and you're right. They sounded really awesome. So DDR USA MIX and DDR Konamix is up in the PSX section! I don't have track titles as I've never played the games, so if anyone can fill in the blanks, let me know and I'll add them in.

Also, Tokimeki Memorial Pocket - Culture-hen - Komorebi no Melody and Tokimeki Memorial Pocket - Sports-hen - Koutei no Photograph are in the Game Boy section. These are some dating-sim games. Of note is the Sports-hen title, which included a Bemani mini-game and therefore has about 2 hours of music.

Keep on dancin'!

Ready for some huge, awesome soundtracks? Good.

Only two today, but they're both big downloads, so clear your caches! Here we go!

First up is the requested Super Mario Galaxy 2 for the Wii! It's just shy of 3 hours of sweeping celestial sounds and orchestrated Nintendo goodness.

And the second one is God Hand for the PS2. What a crazy awesome soundtrack. The music ranges from rock, to funk, to techno, and everything in between. It's so good, my wife and I even used some of the music from it at our wedding! This one's a good 4 hours long and contains some extended cuts of the tracks which can be found on the "God Tracks!" OST. It's also go some tunes that didn't make the OST cut. Definitely grab this one. A track from it will be on the next podcast... I just haven't decided on which one, yet....

Yeah, I agree, even though they don't share a publisher or any staff! This is one of those games that has a violently comedic anime feel that's similar to Gungrave, Trigun, or Cowboy Bebop. Clover was such a great studio. :(

Ok so with these requests what I specifically want is only the NES versions of these games and not any of the other ports, ok. The reason is because some games actually have completely different soundtracks depending on which port we're talking about. I want to find out if that's the case for these soundtracks and maybe to see the differences between the NES version and the original one. btw I've had a huge list of requests that I've got for you that just keeps on growing. Also, you can just send them to me by PM or email if you want to.
1. Xenophobe
2. Wizardry II - The Knight of Diamonds
3. The Untouchables (Ocean Software)
4. Twin Cobra (Developed by Toaplan)
5. Trojan NES Version (Capcom)
6. Toki (Taito)
7. Snow Brothers (Capcom)
8. Sky Kid (Namco)
9. Seicross
10. Robocop 1,2, & 3
11. RoadBlasters (Atari)
12. Kiwi Kraze (aka The New Zealand Story)
13. Mighty Bomb Jack (Temco)
14. Mechanized Attack (SNK)
15. BreakThru

DDR USA mix was the USA version of the game released in 2001. I took all the tracks that were in the pack on joshw's site so I don't know where the other tracks are. Like I said, I know absolutely nothing about those games.

They were ripped using this tool (http://www.romhacking.net/utilities/881/). There are a few out there ripped like that but it's quite difficult and it doesn't work with all games. Mother 3 is a notable use of this technique which a linked to a while back.

At the very least one of those NES requests are already up. Kiki Kraze is a Tim Follin soundtrack.

What a bizarre coincidence. After our little talk about Mother 3, I decided to rip a couple games... and I picked Kirby - Mass Attack totally at random. I was kind of amazed to find out it was composed by Shogo Sakai, the very same guy who wrote Mother 3! This soundtrack is great... it reminds me of M3 a bit, but has a more friendly, Kirby-feel to it. I can't wait to listen to the whole thing.

Second, since I was on a Kirby-roll, I picked Kirby - Squeak Squad. And yes, Shogo Sakai worked on it too, along with Jun Ishikawa. Nice. So much good stuff today!

Lastly, I figured I'd knock out all the DS requests and do Mario & Luigi - Bowser's Inside Story. This is a great one by Yoko Shimomura, who's most famous for composing the Street Fighter II and Final Fight. I can't see any influence of those soundtracks in this work though... it's very light and bouncy.

OK guys... enjoy them!

Wish you'd keep list of deleted music so we could track them; considering that this thread has good music, even mentioning less known titles is great.

Sure, SF2 sold better. I meant that i thought Parasite Eve was her solo work and maybe more expressive. By the way, i still havent decide what SF music is my fav. Maybe SF Alpha, maybe EX2 Plus (Shinji Hosoe FTW)

Yeah, they're just ok for me. Nemo is way too light and airy and Knights of the Round is a bit better, but still lacks some punch. I like really heavy, hard-hitting soundtracks with strong percussion and tempo, and a lot of the Capcom CPS games just fall flat in that area. Isao Abe worked on Cadillacs & Dinosaurs, which I enjoy a lot.

Oh, fine... I was gonna save it till the podcast, but since you asked... Cadillacs & Dinosaurs is up in the arcade section! It's a nice soundtrack, very fitting of a beat 'em up, with some nicely orchstrated FM synths.

Also up is Super Robot Taisen L for the DS and Super Robot Taisen Original Generation Gundam for the PS2. Guys, I think I'm done ripping the SRT series. They're so huge... 780mb for Gaiden! It's taking up way too much of my space.

And, not a request, but super hard to find... Panzer Dragoon Orta for the Xbox! I really nice mix of orchestra and electronic music... very majestic sounding and action packed. This one's worth a download.

So, nobody even tried to guess why today was important. I am disappoint.

Guys, today is this thread's 6 month anniversary! Where's my cake? :itsamystery:

So, here's what's on the plate today (besides cake. Which you guys didn't get me.)

SNES

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers - The first game on the SNES had music from Kinuyo Yamashita in it! The first level's music sounds a lot like her Castlevania music, with a rock twist. It's pretty good!

PSX

Parasite Eve - MMM Hmmm. Some symphinc stuff mixed with electronics, operatic vocals... this one's got a lot going for it. Oh, and it's Yoko Shimomura, as Knivesman has pointed out. ;)

Arcade

Ollie King - Someone a few pages back recommended this to me, and it was really hard to find. I finally got it through a friend IRL (I know! I have a real life! Weird!) and it was just as good as promised! Crazy beats, cool vocals, guitar samples, breaks, drops, arpeggiated synths.... it's just one cool piece of VGM. Totally grab it if you don't already have it.

Xbox

Jet Set Radio Future - Helmed by Hideki Naganuma, who also handled Ollie King. Same deal here, guys.... awesome tunes. Some from different artists, too. Just get it and thank me later!

Maybe it would be easier if I just helped you make your own? We're talking hours and hours of my work here, making albums that only one or two people are downloading, and they're not even going to be part of my permanent collection. I'm sure you can understand why even a super-nice and generous guy like myself wouldn't be too thrilled with that concept. If you'd like to know a few (but not all!) of my trade secrets, PM me and we'll talk, ok? :)

That's it for now! Guess I should go warm my snowblower up.... it's piling up out there!

Yeah they have most of the stuff I use. For NDS games that aren't there, you have to get the actual rom and use VGMToolbox to extract the music yourself. For other games on disc, if it's not there, I'll find the disc image or take it from my collection and figure it out from there.

would you mind doing any type of mastering for me? (you know stuff like making sure the EQ levels are right, normalizing the volume, etc). Also, are you still doing the rest of my requests?
Edit: After thinking about this a bit actually how about we do this: I'll rip the PS2/PSP Super Robot Taisen games myself while you rip the DS/GBA Ones for me. There's really only about 3 or 4 DS/GBA ones I want the music for and the good news is that the soundtracks aren't too big in size compared to the console ones (only about 20 or 30 songs each). Trust me that there's a reason that I'm not ripping the portable ones myself. So will this work out for you or not? Hell I'll even let the post the ones I rip on here.

Okay, request time. I noticed you have Kirby Squeak Squad and Mass Attack, but how in the world did no one recommend Kirby Canvas Curse? On top of being one of the best games on the DS, it's soundtrack is nothing short of amazing. Kirby games often have great soundtracks, but whoever they got to work on Canvas Curse was a total genius, and the music shows.

So yeah, Kirby Canvas Curse, please?

actually, Yamashita had worked on five SNES games before that one. :P

I mean the first Power Rangers SNES game, not HER first SNES game! I can see how that might have been confusing.

Speaking of SNES games, I have some good ones for ya!

Donkey Kong Country 2 and 3 - Don't need to say much about these, they're Dave Wise and Eveline Fischer, so they're excellent scores.

Kaite Tukutte Asoberu Dezaemon - This was a cool make-your-own-shmup game. The music is pretty nice, too... a bit generic, but because you're essentially making your own game, it couldn't be TOO themed. It's good stuff.

Xak - A fantasy RPG originally for the PC-88 but ported to the Super Famicom. The music is pretty typical of any RPG, but it has a nice percussion section, so the beats keep the music flowing.

Because -Hellraiser- asked with a huge smiley face, I'm gonna open my Silent Hill Shrine a little earlier than I had planned. The lone album in it now is called Blood and Rust - the Music of Silent Hill. It's a compilation I made a few years ago for myself of all the best vocal and instrumental songs from the OSTs up to Silent Hill 4 (so not including Origins.) There's a track called "Homecoming," which is in Hellraiser's sig, that really grabbed me, so I recorded my own version of it, remixing the theme from the first Silent Hill and adding my voice. I think it came out pretty good. Hopefully you guys will enjoy the album! Let me know if you like my version too! The original version of "Homecoming" is the last track on my compilation... I guess you should listen to it first if you're not familiar with it!

See you guys on the flipside!

Allo! I have zee more music for you, yes? Please listen to my words.

Just three TG16/ PC Engine titles so far today... I'm finding it's much easier to do updates all for one system at a time, so I'm gonna do that in the future. Say hello to:

Benkai Gaiden - Some music from Masashi Kageyama, who didn't compose too much while at Sunsoft, but worked on the incredible Mr. Gimmick! for the NES. Really nicely composed melodies in this one.

Gai Flame - A sci-fi based strategy battle game from Masaya, and I guess it's part of the Langrisser series. There's only about 7 minutes of music, but it's good stuff. The title theme is my favorite.

Metal Stoker - Neo Hardboiled Shooting A multi-directional shooter. Has some sampled percussion and orchestra hits in the music, which is rare for a PCE title. It gives the music a very unique flavor.

I may have some more stuff later... I'm really digging that Kirby soundtrack that dariendude17 suggested... you have good taste, my friend! I may have that for you guys later. As long as you all behave yourselves! (Not really.. I don't care how bad you are... as long as it's not in my thread!) :)

Two DS games are new in the OP!

Kirby - Canvas Curse - Oh, Jun Ishikawa. You know how to write cool music. This one's kinda techno/ glitch/ futuristic. It sounds a lot like Super Bomberman 4 & 5... so much so, that I had to make sure it was Jun Ishikawa and not Jun Chikuma! Hahaha! #japanesevgmgeekhumor

Super Robot Taisen W - OK, so this is the last SRT game I'm going to do. size123, I'll be glad to offer advice on how to do the rest, but I'm washing my hands of this series. Nothing personal, you're a cool dude, it's just that they're too loooong. I'd be happy to look at any other requests you may have, as long as they're not, like, over 4 hours long.

Tomorrow is looking like a snow day again! Maybe I'll have time to tackle those NES games that have been sitting in my queue for a while. We shall see!

Hey Ruiner, I hate to seem greedy, but I asked earlier for the Batman Begins game score for ps2, and you said it was an unknown format. I'm wondering if the xbox version is more compatible, maybe?

Also, is Yu-Gi-Oh Tag Force 5 on psp also unrippable?

May I request Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney? Just played it for the first time and I was digging the tracks so much that I checked out your collection immediately to see if the ost was there hah

I downloaded the XBOX image and poked around... there's a tool to extract a large file into lots of smaller .sfx files, which contain the music, but there's nothing out there to decode those files yet. I'm downloading the GameCube image now to see what I can do with that. Cross your fingers! Yu-Gi-Oh is still in the queue. I can only do PSP games at home because I need Sound Forge to do it, and lately I've only had time at work (ironically.) If I have the day off tomorrow because of the snow, I'll try to get to it.

I'm glad you like it! I may expand on it with SH: Origins, once I get those ripped. Phoenix Wright's been added to the queue. I've never played them before, though everyone raves about them. Maybe I should start.... when I have a free moment! :)

Batman Begins on the PS2, Xbox, and GCN all have the same music files, which aren't rippable. Yu-Gi-Oh Tag Force 5 also has music in what seems to be a standard format, but won't play in anything I've tried. Sorry. :(

I put some games up last night but didn't have time to announce them... so if you haven't found them yet, here's what's new! (All NES Stereo in the update.)

Break Thru - A short one with some simple music. Like 2 minutes long. *shrugs*

Mechanized Attack - I liked this one. It has some really nice Japanese action music. Good stuff.

Mighty Bomb Jack - Tsukasa Masuko, who wrote some excellent stuff later on (like Megami Tensei II) worked on this soundtrack. It's... not his best work.

RoadBlasters - A shooting/ racing arcade game from Atari. Simple melodies and not a lot of percussion, probably because the noice channels were being used for the car sounds.

Robocop 1, 2, & 3 - Three different animals here. The first game's music was decent enough, fairly typical NES stuff. The 2nd game is from Jonathan Dunn, so if you liked his amazing work on Jurassic Park for the NES, you'll enjoy this, too. His sound is similar to Tim Follin's, but is much more techno, while Follin's is inspired by rock and funk. it's the best of the 3 titles, IMO. The 3rd game is from another NES audio genius, Jeroen Tel (Overlord, Technocop NES.) The title theme is amazing and worth the download, but the rest is pretty short and uninspired.

I should have a few more later today!

I'm not really sure what happened to Masuko-san after the NES days, but after Blazeon and Shin Megami Tensei, the rest of his stuff is kind of "meh." Just very simple, generic video game songs. Kabuki Rocks is almost unfinished sounding, with only a few thin instruments making for a very flat sound. Jammes is only OK.

Seijuu Maden is the only other good one I've heard from him, so I think I'll make a release out of that one. The rest aren't really worth it.

Anyway, Megami Tensei II from NES is still one of my all time favs. And of course we remember that most significant tracks from MT and SMT are constantly remade by Meguro and co.

Gooood morning! (Or evening, or whatever it is when you're reading this.)

First up... our first episode of PixelTunes Radio is now streaming on YouTube! Episode 2 should be up sometime next week.

PixelTunes Radio Podcast Show: Episode 1 - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V73kdkjKVSg)

I've also got a few NES uploads for ya... still trying to chop down that request list.

So, there's a few here, like Spy vs. Spy, Seicross, and Sky Kid that are really short and simple. Spy vs Spy has only 30 seconds of music! Are you guys trolling me?

The other two, Toki and Snow Bros. are a bit longer and make for better listening. I like Toki's soundtrack as it has kind of a jungle feel to it.

I'll be putting a few more NES tracks up today, then we'll be seeing stuff from some different systems over the weekend, when I'm not working on putting episode 2 together.

Enjoy! :)

"In the end, only one VG soundtrack can remain. This is that soundtrack."

Allllrighty, here's the last of the NES stuff I've had laying around, plus a little extra.

Xenophobe - Here's a shorty. It's OK stuff, only 4 tracks.

Wizardry 2 and 3 - Both by Kentaro Haneda... It definitely fits the mood of the games well, being all medieval and castley and stuff.

Twin Cobra - 8 minutes of keyboard runs! This music is pretty decent. it could REALLY use some drums, though. There aren't any at all.

Trojan - Same as before. Decent tunes but no noise channel at all. I mean, I know you needed it for sound effects, but lots of other games were able to pull that kind of thing off! This just makes me wanna go home and put drums on these tracks. For realsies.

The Untouchables - NOW we're talkin'. Jonathan Dunn's sound driver meets Keith Tinman's writing skills, and the results are really awesome. If you like Follin and Gonzalez and Dunn, checka checka this out. You won't be disappoint.

And last, because it was requested soooo nicely, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban for the GBA. It's quite realistic sounding for a midi soundtrack... it almost sounds like a real symphony at times. The tracks are all timed, but unfortunately there aren't any titles. But hey, it's better than nothing, right? :)

Enjoy them (and seriously, go get The Untouchables. I'm not fooling around, here.)

---------- Post added at 04:20 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:27 PM ----------

DS

Phoenix Wright - Ace Attorney - A really cool and varied soundtrack. I love this one!

Game Boy

Spirou - An Alberto Jose Gonzalez work. The guy's got skills. This is one of his better ones, I think.

PC-88

Herzog - KingTengu, is this the right version? It's the only one I could find. It's pretty rockin' stuff, either way!

So KingTengu, I can get just about everything on your list except Xak and D'. I'll work on some over the weekend, but I'll also be putting the new podcast together, so I won't be able to go crazy with it.

Hi guys!

I could only bang out a few releases this weekend... been working on the podcast. So, here's what's new!

Game Boy

Medarot 5 - Susutake Mura no Tenkousei Kabuto Version - Believe it or not, this is a request from Lefance from AUGUST 2013. Crazy! Well, it's the last Medarot game in the series, and it wasn't timed until recently, so now it's good to go. The lovely Kinuyo Yamashita worked on this whole series, and now that I'm familiar with her work, I can totally see the similarities to Castlevania in a lot of her pieces. This soundtrack is great, especially being on Game Boy hardware!

PC-88

XZR - Hakai no Guuzou - This game is the prequel to Exile, which you may know from the Genesis. The music, like most PC-88 titles, is intricately composed, yet easy to listen to.

Saturn

Saturn Bomberman Fight!! - It's Jun Chikuma, but not like you've really heard before. There's tracks of all different genres here, and I'm sure everyone will have their own favorite track according to their tastes. Definitely grab this one!

Alrighty, that's that! Enjoy! :)

Hi, newcomer to the thread. You've done a lot of good here, thank you.

I downloaded your Karous rip and noticed that it's missing at least one song: the main menu theme. Unlike Chaosfield's crazy cherry, I don't think it's ever wound up on an album, so there's no name for it. Really need to get my hands on this (http://vgmdb.net/album/39270) about that...

Welcome! I'm glad you've found some cool stuff here! As for Karous, that's really interesting. The music I've posted is directly from the disc image, and I can't even see on it where there could be another track. It must be encoded in a way that's unique, and unable to be converted to MP3 so far. I'll keep an eye out for anyone who's unraveled that mystery, though.

As far as the OST you've linked to, it looks really awesome! Getting those kinds of albums isn't really my specialty; however, now that I know about it, I'll (again) keep my eye out during my research and let you know if I find it. :)

EG Expression II~ Will Evergrace OST - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yc5SGUIAhtM)

Galaxy Fight: Universal Warriors - music seems to be better than game itself :)

You're right - we DO need more Neo Geo in our lives! I seem to remember at least Blazing Star being streamed, compressed audio, which sounds pretty crappy when converted. I think the NG -CD version is a lot more clear, so I'll grab it from that. Anything else with FM synth music I'll grab from the game. It seems can do everything except Operation Wolf - I can't find the game image on the net! If you happen to know where I might locate one, please let me know!

A few quick updates!

Gamecube - Yeah, we have a GC section now :)

Bomberman Jetters - Based on the cartoon. Some decent stuff, but not as good as Chikuma's music.

Bomberman Generation - I like this one a little more than Jetters. It's STILL not Chikuma, but the music is a little less cinematic sounding.

Genesis

Zan - Yasha Enbukyoku - A very early Motoi Sakuraba strategy game. The game itself was ported from the PC-88 version, and it sounds like the music was, too. It's very simple, and the drums are just static clicks. it's composed well, but certainly not Sakuraba's best.

OK! Working on the podcast tonight, so no updates for the rest of the day. Enjoy!

Yes, the file structure on the Wii and the DC discs are very similar... the music files are identical, if I remember correctly. Probably why that menu music is hidden on both.

Also, Operation Wolf for the FM Towns Marty is now up in the "PC-88/ MSX/ Japanese gaming systems" section! There's no info anywhere on who composed the music for this one, but it's really good! It has a very late 80's/ early 90's vibe, with strong percussion and some really nice synth sounds. You should check it out, simply because I don't think it exists in album form anywhere else on the net! :) Also, thanks to Knivesman for locating the disc image for me on a Russian torrent site. I never would have found it there!

Yeah, I read that there's both an OPN and an OPNA version of the PC-88 soundtrack... maybe I'll appreciate it more with the heavier percussion of the OPNA. I'm kind kind of a stickler for drum sounds. I wish I had the time to sit down and make albums with HOOT Player, but it's just way too consuming for me. Maybe if the requests ever die down (haha) I can put some effort into it.

No, but seriously... here's some examples:

Any of Jesper Kyd's Genesis work:

Akira Yamaoka's Silent Hill series. This is just an example of how he blends dark industrial beats with beautiful melodies:

Silent Hill 3 OST - Letter - From The Lost Days - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SBY_fUpmnQ)

Firepower 2000 - A very underrated soundtrack for a very underrated SNES shmup. I love how explosion noises are used as percussion:

Super Scope 6 - Mole Patrol. Just wait till about 28 seconds in. This video doesn't really demonstrate the power of the bass in this song. You'll need my rip for that. ;)

OK, I didn't mean ALL RPG soundtracks. I've mentioned several times that Earthbound and Mother 3 are two of my favorite albums ever. I was just implying that the majority of RPG soundtracks are symphonic and/ or very folksy, which just isn't my style.

That Threads of Fate tune is pretty good, though! I've never heard that before!

We play and discuss music from Beat 'em Ups this time around, as well as talk about some composers like Isao Abe, Kinuyo Yamashita, and Yuzo Koshiro. Also, there's a couple of comedy skits/ fake commercials starring Abobo from Double Dragon and Poison from Final Fight. I hope you guys enjoy it! You can find the links in the OP!

Dark Cloud 1 and 2? not sure if you consider the flute to be a folk instrument though.

Nah, still not my type of music. I don't mind flutes, acoustic guitar, shamisens, whatever, over electronic beats... I just don't have an ear for "old world" music like Dark Cloud's. It doesn't mean I don't appreciate it when it's well-composed, or hate on the people who DO like it... but if I had a choice between that and the Neo Contra soundtrack, I'd always go for that instead. :)

Anyways, we have a mixed bag of new albums today! Here's the scoop, troops!

SNES

Blazeon - A nice piece by Tsukasa Masuko. I especially like the baselines, and track 4 is really catchy.

Seijuu Maden - Beasts & Blades - Another Tsukasa Masuko album. This one's a bit wider in scope, being from a fantasy-based game. He writes some really awesome basslines, and they really drive the songs. Some cool dance beats in here too.

Super Sangokushi - A short album by Yoko Kanno, who's worked on the Nobunaga's Ambition games, plus the Cowboy Bebop and Ghost in the Shell animes. It's good stuff, it's just sad that the tunes are so short.

TG-16

Toy Shop Boys - A vertical shooter. The tone of this one is pretty playful. I couldn't find any info on the composer, though!

Genesis

Puggsy - Shaun Hollingsworth and Matt Furniss worked on this one, so you already know it's pretty good. My favorite track is "The Red Woods." Those DRUMS. So nice. The melody is fantastic, too. These guys know how to write.

NES

Silva Saga - There were gonna be more NES albums today, but this one had to be timed manually and there's like 40 tracks, so it took quite a while. This one is a competent piece, but sounds very similar to a lot of the other RPG's that came out around it's time. Simple melodies, no percussion, and a lot of suspenseful sounding tracks.

Anyone listened to the podcast yet? What do you think of my Abobo voice? I was inspired by Splinter from the Ninja Turtle cartoons. :)

Enjoy!

Hey Ruiner, it's been a while! I was sorta wondering if you remembered earlier request. (http://forums.ffshrine.org/f72/ruiner9s-high-quality-stereo-nes-soundtrack-ganza-138495/34.html#post2584183) It's really no biggie if you're unable to get it, though.

Interesting! I shall add it to the file!

We have some awesome releases today! Jumping from the simple NES days, up to the high quality music of the NEO GEO and CPS1 systems, here's what new in the Arcade section:

Blazing Star - If you having played this awesome side-scrolling shmup, you should really seek it out. It has amazing graphics and animation, and a sweet techno soundtrack as well.

Far East of Eden - Kabuki Clash - A mix of rock and traditional Japanese music. It's great fighting music.

Galaxy Fight - Universal Warrior - One of Sunsoft's only NEO GEO games. And you know what kind of music Sunsoft puts out.

Last Resort - Another horizontal shooter made for SNK by some ex-Irem staffers. It's very similar to R-Type and a lot of fun. There's a mix of rock and dance music in this one.

Matrimelee - One of the later NEO GEO titles, the winner of this fighting game gets to marry a kid. (?) Anyways, there's a lot of rock and metal, and some vocal tracks too!

Rage of the Dragons - I guess this fighting game takes place in the Double Dragon universe, but other than having characters named Billy and Jimmy, there's not many other similarities. There's a mix of a lot of different songs in this one, with some hints of Double Dragon tunes. It's a very good album.

The King of Dragons - I could have sworn I had posted this, but I guess I was wrong, so here it is! It's got an epic medieval theme going for it, and because it's a CPS game, it sounds a lot like a Genesis title.

There you have it!

Enjoy!

You're welcome! I'll let you know when I'll be taking requests again, so write it down somewhere so you'll remember. ;)

Here's an exclectic mishmash of stuff for you guys today:

Game Boy

Star Sweep - A Game Boy port of a Japanese Arcade puzzle game and budget US PSX game. The music has a classic video game feel to it... nothing super fancy.

PSX

Incredible Crisis! - This is an underrated gem, and a personal non-request selection! The Taneo family has forgotten it's Grandma's birthday, and they all have to get home in time for her party. Ridiculous things happen along the way. The game's music is performed entirely by the Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra (not really an orchestra btw) and it's phenomenal. If you're not familiar with ska, it's bouncy rock music with a horn section, and it works great for this game. Check it out! (The game and the album!)

Ridegear Guybrave - Whew, this one's good! Nice beats, sweet keyboards, stylish songs... I wanna get my hands on the sequel's music!

PS2

EverGrace - This one's kind of dark. From Software's music has always been very atmospheric, and this is no exception. It reminds me a bit of Silent Hill in some ways... that's a good thing!

OK, enjoy! Should be more tomorrow!

It's not very polite to post other people's work without their permission. I'll inquire as to how he got the rip. If he used M1, then my rip would be of equal quality and it'd be silly to put the same effort into doing something he's already done. Aight fellas, here's this morning's updates. It's a Bomberman kind of morning! I'm not gonna go too into the music on these, because I'm sure you guys know what to expect from these games: lighthearted action music, with mostly techno and electronic influences. We have:

Bomberman Max - GameBoy
Bomberman Quest - GameBoy
Bomberman Max 2 - GBA
Bomberman Online - Dreamcast

So that takes care of all of size123's Bomber-requests that I can do!

Also, a couple extras:

Rumble Roses - A wrestling game from Konami for the PS2, which I guess was kind of their answer to Tecmo's Dead or Alive series, as it features lots of babes fighting in a ring, on the street, or in (*gulp*) mudbaths. The music rocks. All sorts of genres represent the different ladies' styles, and they're performed by Konami's A-team of composers, including Akira Yamaoka.

Xenon 2 - Megablast - This is an interesting title. It's a port of a shooter on the Amiga, which was based around one song, "Mega-Blast," from an artist called Bomb the Bass. There's a Genesis version of this game, too, which I'll be posting later. It's only one track, but it sure is catchy, and the Genesis version is even better.

Would you guys be interested in the Japanese versions of the Donkey Konga trilogy for the GameCube? Check the song listings (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_songs_in_the_Donkey_Konga_game_series) and let me know. I think there's some good stuff on it.

Good morning! A couple of albums for ya:

Night Slave - Wow. I didn't expect such awesome music from the PC-98! This is some excellent stuff for a really obscure shmup that never made it out of Japan. Check this one out!

Pac-Man World - The quality on this one for the PSX is questionable... for some reason, the music was in 3 different formats. Some songs sound really good, and others are tinny. Anyways, it's by Tommy Tallarico, so it's decent stuff, and worth a listen if you like his stuff.

OK! Updates for today! I hope you guys like Dungeons and Dragons, because all 5 AD&D games for the NES are in the OP! They're all decent, but my favorites are Heroes of the Lance, Pool of Radiance, and Dragons of Flame. Hitoshi Sakimoto worked on the latter, so ya'll already know it's good.

Also, 1942 for the NES is up. Ummm... I dunno, guys. I usually try to say something good about each album, but... Track 1 sounds like the alarm that wakes me up for work, and the other tracks sometimes don't even have notes that harmonize. It's kind of worth downloading just so you can say, "wait, this is Ayako Mori? The same woman who composed Ghosts 'n Goblins Ayako Mori? No way!" Because yeah, it's really quite awful.

What I really enjoy about the soundtrack is that it sounds a lot like a Genesis/ Mega Drive, yet has much more versatility. So, I have some NES albums. I'm almost embarrassed to post most of them, because they're all pretty bad. I'm wondering if the requester even listened to some of them before requesting. Here we go:

Alpha Mission - This game uses only the two square wave channels. No bass, no drums... Kind of boring.

American Gladiators - I guess maybe it sounds like the composer was trying to do some cool stuff, but the sound driver just couldn't cut it. Also, lots of tracks with nothing but a drum beat.

Athena - In a search for a composer, which I couldn't find, I ran across this review:
The music is horrific, like the "composers" took lessons from the Tagin' Dragon title screen. The notes are crudely digitized without refinement. The result is something like a monkey screech fed through a speaker filter until its brutish attempts at "notes" sound more like a mockery of a "song" designed to torture people than as the true background tracks they should be. The sound effects are either bizarrely absent or outright intrusive. Nobody who was involved with the making of this video game could have had any experience whatsoever with game design before. It is impossible to create a game with features this bad unless they were first-time nobodies who did not know any better and were ignorant from the start. Couldn't have said it better myself.

Bandit Kings of Ancient China - OK, at least this one is kind of listenable. I can see if you were a kid and played this game, that you'd maybe wanna hear it again.

Cyberball - No. Just.... just no. Is this even music?

The Bard's Tale - The other kind-of competent entry in the bunch. The sounds are still really kind of simple and the composition is very basic.

So, with that said, I'm going to screen the remaining 6 NES soundtracks I have left in the queue and just ditch the ones that are unlistenable, or are super short. (I think Cyberball is under 1 minute.)

Anything else that anyone has requested while I "wasn't taking requests," I've already got them in the queue so you don't need to re-request them! :) I'll take down the big red text in my sig when that's done, but I think I'm going to add a "limit 5 titles at a time" rule so that everyone gets a shot.

That sounds fair, right?

actually, most of them can be ported right over to the Genesis with little to no effort. the YM2612 lacked the built in "Rhythm Sound Source" ADPCM sampler. (although it could play back PCM samples, just not like in this manner). it also had lacked a built in SSG, but the SN76489 functioned as the same thing. I believe the pure FM generation of both chips (OPNA & OPN2) were identical, however. Many (if not most) Japanese Genesis soundtracks were actually written on a PC-88/98 and ported over, like the Sonic games, stuff from Wolf Team, and anything from Yuzo Koshiro.

Well, you may want to see if you can find some samples on YouTube or something before you make a request, because it's a lot of wasted time, effort, and storage space to rip an NES game just to see what it sounds like!

Well, that's more or less what I was expecting when I ripped the first one... then I gave it a listen and had to make sure my NSF player wasn't broken!

So to balance out the not-so-great stuff from yesterday, I'm upping two great albums today: Hudson Hawk and Darkman for the NES. Both were pretty bad games based on pretty bad movies, but the music was by Jonathan Dunn, who you might remember from the awesome Jurassic Park NES soundtrack. So go grab 'em! :)

Also, Gemfire, by Yoko Kanno, Genghis Khan, and Gauntlet are up. All three are pretty good, mostly old-school sounding stuff.

I had to trash Elevator Action because I couldn't even find any music besides some one-instrument melodies that would only play out of one speaker in stereo mode anyways. LOL

Holy cow.... can it be? It's the first time I've been caught up since 2013! WOW!

Here are the last of the queue:

On the SNES, Batman Returns and The Adventures of Batman and Robin. Both are by mostly the same team at Konami, and feature a symphonic sound set, but with the rhythms and melodies of an action video game. It works very well, and certainly adds to the mood of the games.

For the PSX, Speed Power Gunbike. There's some tarcks on here that sound kind of spy-movie. Also, some low-key electronic tracks, too.

And last, on the PS2, Pac-Man World 3. A really long soundtrack with very well-produced tunes. Kind of surprising for a Pac-Man game. It almost sounds like a movie score. Check it out!

OK! I'm gonna take the weekend to work on some releases of my choosing, and I'm also recording episode 3 of PixelTunes Radio. I'll open requests back up on Monday, with a limit of 5 per person at a time. It'll be in my signature as a reminder!

See ya!

I know you have requests open on Monday, but I won't be online on that day, so here are my latest (and to keep it in 5 per limit, of course):

- Mechanized Attack (Arcade)

There. Like I said, sorry for requesting three days early, but I won't be online on Monday. Have a good day, and thank you!! :D

Hello!

First of all, I finally got around to watching the first episode of your podcast. I enjoyed it, though the comedy skits weren't really my thing. Not a critique against them, just not my cup of tea. Good selection of music unsurprisingly. I'll get around to the second episode soon. I've been a bit busy lately is all. Just looking over it though it seems a like a great selection of tunes, I love me some old school beat'em ups. For future episodes you might want to include a song list in the description for reference's sake.

Night Slave - Wow. I didn't expect such awesome music from the PC-98! This is some excellent stuff for a really obscure shmup that never made it out of Japan. Check this one out!

The PC-98 is one of those areas of gaming history that gets kinda ignored by American gamers for the simple fact that it's virtually unknown outside of Japan. Love the FM synth sound you could get out of it. If you want to hear a more modern take on this sort of sound, you should listen to Yuzo Koshiro's soundtracks for the first three Etrian Odyssey games for the DS if you haven't. It was composed on a PC-98 (possibly 88?) and some additional drums were added. I like the more orchestral stuff he's been doing for the 3DS games, but I love the DS OSTs to death. This one here is a personal fave (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_0TeykT5NA), one of my favorite boss fight type tunes.

Now for some requests. I'm only posting them tonight because I too won't be online much tomorrow and I don't want to forget.

Dead of the Brain 2 (PC-98) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P9ufEGvY_vw)
Platoon (NES) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZfZQWz0VVxI) Mostly just requesting this for the Game Over music, the rest of the songs are pretty iffy but I'm very fond of this tune.
Rusty (PC-98) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5yGDBHHL3Po&list=PLCCOoHvw8epqL1yFqkhCR225-NExTv4NE)
Tokimeki Memorial (TG16) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJT80YmWN1o) - just like how one of the GB versions had a full Bemani style game, this one has a couple of space shooters stowed away. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jB48xmhamgk)
The Treasure of the Usas (MSX) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xgb7NFCL7YE)

Thanks so much for all your hard work.

I believe Yuzo uses the Sound Board II Edition PC-8801FA for all his FM compositions (might even be the same one he used back in the 90s) and yea, EO3's soundtrack is so awesome.

I believe Yuzo uses the Sound Board II Edition PC-8801FA for all his FM compositions (might even be the same one he used back in the 90s) and yea, EO3's soundtrack is so awesome.

I felt I had to do some digging on this, because after looking at Etrian Odyssey's soundtrack files and noting that they were in 2sf format, I wondered how he could have composed it on a PC-88 and made the transition. Considering that he'd have to use the general MIDI interface on a PC-88 to be able to port it to DS, why wouldn't he have just used more user-friendly modern PC software to create it? Well, I found this interview (http://www.siliconera.com/2008/10/19/extra-2008-yuzo-koshiro-on-etrian-odyssey/) where he states

Siliconera: Do you have a long history of creating songs with the PC-88 computer?

Yuzo Koshiro: In my career in electronic music, this was the computer I started off with. Though I am thoroughly familiar with it, it continues to be an desire of mine to get the most out of this hardware. Since the Etrian Odyssey series began, the PC-8801 has been the chosen source for sampling sounds for the project.

So it looks like he made (or used) a MIDI soundfont taken from the YM2608 and composed the tunes on DS-compatible hardware. This might explain the lack of FM-sweeps and tweaks you often hear from him when directly working with the chip via code. Or, it was just a sound design choice.

Anyways, the interview is very informative, so I hope it provides some new knowledge for you!

---------- Post added at 10:27 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:07 AM ----------

I have a couple updates this morning, I didn't really get nearly as much done soundtrack-wise as I wanted to this weekend. I was too busy playing the amazing new Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze on the Wii U. If anyone does a gamerip of it, grab it, cuz Dave Wise's soundtrack is phenomenal.

So, for the arcade, there's Rohga - Armor Force or Wolf Fang as it was known in Japan. I was on the fence about this one. The composition is fantastic, but the production is kind of meh. The drum samples are really low quality and are kind of distracting from the synths, and the bass could stand to be a little more deep and dynamic. But... there are plenty of cool parts in a lot of tracks, so check it out!

And since I was looking into it, I posted Etrian Odyssey III - The Drowned City in the DS section. I really like this soundtrack... it reminds me a lot of his earlier Ys compositions, and the classic YM synths mixed with a more modern percussion section make a great combination. I'll be adding the first two games in the series at a later date.

Also, Elwood, the two PC-98 games you requested need to be done through HOOT, which is... well, time consuming to say the least. Being as how I've been so busy with the podcast and such lately, it might be a while before I can get to them, especially if they're longer soundtracks. The rest I should be able to do relatively quickly. I'm glad you enjoyed the podcast! The commercials are admittedly a bit rough, but we're still getting used to the writing/ editing process and trying to get more professional with them every episode. Practice makes perfect! I think the 2nd episode sounds and flows a lot better... hopefully we'll continue to improve upon that aspect.

ruiner9, the OST versions of Etrian Odyssey I, II, and III have the actual FM versions on them as well. but yea, it does seem like he sampled the sounds from those and then made them sequenced files fit for the NDS.

Annnnnnd more stuff! Good stuff, too!

SNES

Lock On (Super Air Diver) - Some rockin' tunes, if not a little bit tinny sounding. Mission 3 is great... it reminds me of the Runaway 5 songs from Earthbound! I'm putting this under "Lock On" because I try to stick with the American titles, as that's what most people will search for.

Super Air Diver 2 - The second game was written by a different audio team. I'm not as big of a fan of it, but it still has some good action music.

NES

Ufouria: The Saga - Not a requested one, but we played a few Naoki Kodaka tunes on the podcast over the weekend and I noticed that I hadn't uploaded this one yet. Sunsoft bass sample goodness!

(also, Platoon for the NES was requested, but it's already in the OP, so you must have missed it!)

PC Engine

Tokimeki Memorial - The original version of the game, from the PC Engine CD. There's 180 tracks, and all but three are chiptunes. And they're good, too! Lots of happy Japanese music, along with some cool action tunes for the sports competitions and the shmups based on TwinBee and Gradius/ Life Force. Worth a download.

MSX

Treasure of the Usas - An older game featuring music from Kinuyo Yamashita. As usual, her work from the Castlevania era is very easy to pick out on this soundtrack.

That's it for today! Enjoy! :)

Updates of all sorts for the afternoon!

First off, I've updated several NES releases that had incorrect or no tags, and some that had a lower quality of audio. These are:

Blaster Master
Fester's Quest
Bionic Commando
Faxanadu

The reason is because they're all going to appear in podcast episode 3!

Also, I've uploaded Final Fantasy 4 for the SNES, as that will be played too.

Now, onto the requests!

NES

Fire 'n Ice - Ryuichi Nitta, who composed the first two Ninja Gaiden titles on the NES, did this one. It's interesting because it has a sampled bass like Sunsoft's titles did. The music is pretty good, but a lot of it sounds the same. There are a few gems, though, like track 16, "Labyrinth Theme."

Star Trek - 25th Anniversary - Not much to say about this one. The music is REALLY REALLY slow to the point of boring, and the Star Trek theme on track one has been mangled to the point of being unlistenable. Oh well.

Sugoro Quest - Dice no Senshi Tachi - Here's a cool Japanese-only RPG that had some really nice art, and a fun soundtrack. If you like the music and want to check the game out, there's an English translation for the rom right here. (http://www.romhacking.net/translations/1233/)

Super Star Force - Mikio Saito's first game, and he later went on to write music for the Tokimeki Memorial series. I like this one. It sounds a bit ahead of it's time for '86, and I detect a bit of Koji Kondo's and HIP Tanaka's influence in his songs. It's some good stuff!

Dreamcast

Radirgy - Otherwise known as being short for "Radio Allergy," this vertical MileStone shmup had some great techno tunes. I took the titles from the OST's listing. The major difference is the length of the tracks... some of the level music is extended much longer on the gamerip, and some of the menu screen music is actually a little shorter here. Either way, it's nice to have slightly different versions of these awesome songs!

I've got four requests remaining: 2 for King Tengu which will need to be done through M1, and then Elwood's, which I'll try to do through HOOT.

Also, I've updated the OP with a few disclaimers about requests that you may wanna look at... I'm sure there are no surprises. I'm just making it so that everyone gets a fair shot at requests, and so I don't get overwhelmed again.

Enjoy!

Blaster Master, Fester's Quest, Faxanadu and Bionic Commando sounds like a good lineup, I look forward to that episode.

Thanks for being so quick with the uploads, Ruiner! I don't mind having to wait on the PC-98 games, no worries there. And yeah, I guess forgot you had already uploaded Platoon. My guess is that I didn't grab when I initially started dl'ing your stuff because I didn't think the Platoon game would have very good music. I didn't know the composer and I hadn't heard the Game Over tune at the time.

I was wondering if I could add two NES requests:
Nekketsu Kakutou Densetsu (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1W0RHBFBywE) (a fighting game in the Kunio-kun series, think River City Ransom: Tournament Edition)
Twinbee 3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UH24lZpi0zE) (Really good Konami soundtrack which tends to get drowned out a bit in-game since the music restarts constantly due to powerup pickups).

I did a little research, King Tengu, and Vandyke isn't rippable, even using M1 software. UPL, the developer, used some proprietary sound hardware that isn't supported yet, so there's not much I can do unfortunately. Also, Mechanized Attack doesn't have an associated list file with it, so while I can use M1 to rip it, it'll take some extra time going through the soundbanks manually to make sure I've got everything. I'm going to put up some of the NES requests today since they're usually quick, and I need to finish up the podcast post-production tonight, so hopefully tomorrow night, I'll have some time to start work on those and the PC-98 requests. Alrighty, I've hand-picked a couple special soundtracks that you should really check out:

Metropolis Street Racer for the Dreamcast - Essentially a prequel to Project Gotham Racing. There's 3 locations you can race in, and all sorts of different genres to listen to... Rock, Metal, Techno, Acid Jazz... even country! Richard Jacque wrote all the tunes, so they all have a cohesive feel to them, and the production is top-notch. Highly recommended.

Cel Damage for the Game Cube - Wow. This stuff is awesome. Great beats, driving keyboards, heavy guitars, and crunchy rhythm sections... I LOVE this soundtrack, and I think you will too. Check it out!

Happy listening!

The requests should mostly be honorable... Naomi uses the same music format that the Dreamcast does, so as long as I can find the game's files, there's a good chance I can convert it.

So now, onto today's uploads!

Game Boy

Fortified Zone - Some ridiculously awesome action music. The boss music and level 3's music are outstanding. This one's gonna go in my car stereo ASAP.

Metroid II - Ryoji Yoshitomi followed in Hirokazu Tanaka's footsteps, creating a strange, lonely audio soundscape for Samus to run around to.

GBA

Metroid Zero Mission - This takes the Metroid themes and makes them a bit more cinematic and full... the Brinstar theme is really cool. Unfortunately GBA music decoding sucks and this game isn't compatible with the GBAMusRiper MIDI tool, so it sounds a bit staticky. Nothing I can do about that. :/

NES

Be Bop High School - Hey look, it's Shogo Sakai! I love that dude. This soundtrack has a 50's rock feel, similar to some of the battle tracks on his awesome Mother 3 soundtrack. I like this one a lot. Sakai is so rad. :3

Daikaijuu - Deburas - Never heard of this one before, but I'm impressed. There's sampled percussion and some really unique soundforms in the square channels that emulate real instruments pretty nicely. The music is very nicely composed. This one's a winner!

So.. a bunch of cool albums AND a podcast today? You guys are so spoiled. ;)

Enjoy.

Many thanks to ruiner9 for all his hard work in putting out these soundtracks, some of them have been a little tough to find so I'm very pleased at the great job you've done. :)

For my requests, also my apologies if these have been requested before:

Dragon Ball - Shen Long no Nazo (Famicom | You've posted the soundtrack to Dragon Power, the English-release of this game. However, the soundtrack was also changed when the game was localized, and a lot less catchy and enjoyable, so I'd love to see a release of the Japanese version's soundtrack!!)

Baseball Simulator .1000 (NES | There's a certain track in this game that has been stuck in my head for ages!!)

Super Bombliss (Super Famicom | I've only ever found one track from this game, uploaded to YouTube, and it's been a favorite game of mine for years now, with a great soundtrack that more people should listen to!!)

Thank you for whatever work you can do on these. :)

Hi ruiner! I only have one request today, it's this obscure game called New Zealand Story Revolution, which is a DS remake of the The NewZealand Story arcade game. Would it be possible if you could please put both game soundtracks, the Arcade and the DS versions? If it can only be the DS remake (which is the one I really want) it's perfectly fine. :)

I heard you guys like video game music. I brought some with me, as a token of friendship. Here's what's in my sack:

Baseball Simulator 1.000 for the NES - Oh man, did I love this game as kid, and I'm not even a baseball fan! The music brought back memories of throwing supercharged fireballs at my brother's batter and striking him out so much that he'd throw the controller and stomp out of the room. Those were the days. Anyways, the music in this game is really good. There's no composer credits anywhere, which is kind of sad. :(

Mechanized Attack for arcade - I mentioned that this one was a pain to do... well, it's done! There's 32 tracks, for a whopping total of 6 minutes. Yup. Anyways, the songs are all obviously REALLY short, mostly "stingers" that play at the beginning of the level and that's it. It's not bad music, but it's nothing super awesome either.

Kinetica for the PS2 - Oooh, awesome dance music! This one is great to blast in the car with the windows down so all the ladies think you go to the clubs all the time. Then she'll find out it's from a video game and walk out on you. I'm just kidding. But seriously, this is pro-grade stuff right here.

Test Drive Le Mans for Dreamcast - There's a mix of music in this one... some chill electronic stuff, some real dancefloor music, and even some rock. I'm listening to it now and really enjoying it! Another recommended download!

OK kids... I wish I could have gotten more done, but BS 1.000 and Mech Attack took a long time. I'm working on Xak for ya, KingTengu... it's over 50 tracks and needs to be cut manually, so it'll be a while longer.

TGIF!!! My weekend begins in 20 minutes! :)

Awesome, thanks! And i love how u introduce new music everytime.

Btw guys, dont confuse Dreamcast's Test Drive Le Mans with Sega Model 3's one and with PS1's another one.

Ah, good. I can imagine, because the MSX version of Xak's music is the same as the PC-88, X68K, and SNES versions, except for two new opening tracks to replace the main one (excluding the intro part, of course).

Also, I agree with your apt description of Fortified Zone. It is very good. I discovered that its Japanese-only sequel for the GB and Operation Logic Bomb (actually the third game in the series and titled "Ikari no Yosai" in Japan, which, bizarrely enough, is Fortified Zone's Japanese name) was composed by Yasuyuki Suzuki, and have quite a different sound from Tsukasa Tawada's compositions from the first game. Just thought I point it out to you. :)

Have a good weekend to you, ruiner9!! XD

Good morning! Had a party at my place last night, so I'm playing my game music very quietly this morning so my brain doesn't explode.

Anyways, here's some files with some songs in them:

SNES

Super Bombliss - Hard to find, but here it is, in all it's complete glory! I was surprised with this one. It's very dancy, and it seems to use the sound driver that Yuzo Koshiro wrote for Super Adventure Island. The Contest Theme has a nice reggae beat, and the Puzzle Mode song is right out of a Koshiro score. Check it out and see if you agree!

Operation Logic Bomb - OK, so I posted Fortified Zone for the Game Boy a couple days ago, and this one is the third game in that trilogy. The co-host of my podcast, Mike, has a great video review series on YouTube (you may remember the Undercover Cops episode I was in) and he's going to be doing a trilogy of reviews for the series! Since he needed the soundtrack for the videos anyways, I figured I'd post them here too. The soundtrack is a decent action score... not too groundbreaking, but listenable.

MSX

Xak - The Art of Visual Stage - Finally done with this one. It sounds really good. A great mix of different types of music, all excellently composed.

Game Boy

Ikari no Yousai 2 - This is the 2nd game in the Fortified Zone trilogy. The composer is the same guy that wrote the SNES game's score, but I think this one is clearly the best of the three. It's got some very cool action tunes that remind me a bit of Mega Man. You should grab this one.

That's it for now! Possible some more later... if this hangover goes away! :P

Where did you get Mitsuhiko Takano as Super Bombliss composer? That game was scored by Mitsuto Suzuki, who now works at Square Enix.

BTW sound drivers do not equal the same instruments/sound, especially for SNES games which used MIDI anyway. even for Genesis games, it doesn't matter (in terms of instruments). check out Landstalker and Gley Lancer, which both used the same CUBE driver, yet completely different instrument sets.

Right here.

EDIT: That's a big NOPE. Takano did the sound effects, Suzuki is the composer. I've corrected the album. My sleuthy skills get rusty when I party the night before, evidently.

BTW dissident.... do you check ALL my releases?

Hi guys! Here's some stuff for you! You like this stuff? I give you even MORE stuff!

Here's dat stuff:

Dash Galaxy in the Alien Asylum - Ummm... not that great. Very simple, WAAAAY too fast, and super repetitive. I feel like if they slowed the music down to half the speed it plays at, it would be decent. Still not great, but decent. The composer, Tania Smith, is an Australian who's currently living in Tennessee and has a band that's really popular in... Second Life. Well. That's NOT what I want to go when I grow up.

Kid Kool - For a game released in 1988, this music sounds like a launch title. It's really simple, no percussion (except on track 8, oddly), and doesn't really go anywhere. Oh well.

Nekketsu Kakutou Densetsu - This game is part of Technos Japan's Kunio-Kun series, which partly made it over to the USA as River City Ransom and Super Dodge Ball, among others. Kazuo Sawa wrote some of the music for this game, as he did for a lot of the other Kunio-Kun titles, so they sound very similar. This one is great... a recommended download!

TwinBee 3: Poko Poko Daimaō - I love the TwinBee game that made it to the USA, called Stinger... I should probably post that one soon. If you're familiar with that title, a lot of the tunes here will bring back memories of this crazy shoot 'em up. I really like this one.

PC-98

Dead of the Brain 2 - Here's a spooky graphic novel/ adventure game only released in Japan. The music is pretty cool... very suspenseful and kind of frightening at times. It seems there's an English translation available for the PC-Engine CD version of this game... maybe I'll check it out.

OK... time to go watch The Walking Dead. Enjoy the music!

Good morning, music fans! A couple of "hoppy" soundtracks to start your Tuesday off right:

Frogger 1 and 2 for the PSX! I was honestly surprised at these. Pretty funky beats, some nice arrangements... these are fun tunes! I wish the quality was a bit better, but it's Playstation, so it leaves a bit to be desired. Still worth a listen, though! Especially the second game.

I should have more later today. Enjoy!

Wow this thread's come a long way, it's really amazing!

Lesse, requests, hmm.. Some SNES Koei goodness would be neat. Although it's all good stuff from what I've heard, Aerobiz Supersonic and Uncharted Waters: New Horizons in particular would be cool.

And beyond that I think World of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse for the Genesis is a really nice soundtrack. :D

Okey dokey... the recent requests have been queued! I'm glad you're enjoying them!

Here's what's on the menu today:

Arcade

Gaia Crusaders - A great Neo Geo game with a great soundtrack. The one drawback is that these late-era NG gamerips are only low-quality mono streams, because that's how the game has them encoded. The upside is you get a few more tunes, and some extended versions over the official OST (if one had ever been released.) I really like the industrial-sounding cemetery track!

Gain Ground - An earlier Sega title with some cool period pieces. There's a nice medieval song that really gets you going, and it's pretty long, too. Check it out!

New Zealand Story - This game is so fun... I liked listening to it because I'm very familiar with Tim Follin's Kiwi Kraze version on the NES. The melodies really get stuck in your head. There was a DS remake, which leads me to....

DS

New Zealand Story Revolution - Mostly similar tunes to the arcade version, but updated a bit. This is a bit better than the arcade soundtrack, but both are very good.

Dreamcast

Confidential Mission - A Sega lightgun game in the vein of Virtua Cop, but with a spy twist. The songs are very similar to modern-day James Bond tunes, and very danceable. Extremely well produced.

So! Enjoy your musical meals, and I'll keep the entrees coming. C ya!

Does this answer your question?

I would like to say that the list of vgms is starting to become awesomer and awesomer!! :D Oh, and thanks for the three vgms, as always. :)

I got five new requests, but this time, I am sticking to more easier ones, lol:

1. Air Diver (Genesis) (just to complete the Air Diver music series)
2. Battle Unit Zeoth (Game Boy)
3. Knight Rider Special (PC-Engine) (has some good tracks, including the Knight Rider theme)
4. Silva Saga II: The Legend of Light and Darkness (Super Nintendo) (a great sequel with a superb soundtrack)
5. Tenseiryu: Saint Dragon (PC-Engine)

Thanks!!

P.S. I am also going over the tracks of the tagless vgms in a process to identify them. I've done four so far, so I will PM them to you. :)

Only STARTING to get awesome? I think it's been pretty awesome for quite a while now. :)

There's a different kind of update tonight! The supercool KingTengu has researched and tagged five previously untagged games! They are:

NES

Lone Ranger
Falsion
The Untouchables

Game Boy

TMNT 3 - Radical Rescue

Arcade

Mechanized Attack

He also corrected me on the composer of Mechanized Attack... I had listed the NES composer accidentally. Thanks, dude!

I've changed the links to these games in the OP. If you download them from this point on, they will be correct.
