That's Fantastic! Speaking of obscure Japanese Computers the X68000 is fantastic though have you ever used hoot Sound Emulator?

I use Hoot very often for X68000, PC-88, and PC-98 soundtracks. I think the quality is very good!

Use the FAQ here if you want a good tutorial and links to the files you need for drum samples for the OPNA chip, among others. That should get you started.

GOOD NEWS! The situation with Mega cleared itself up and the account has been freshly renewed for a year! :) KusanagiShiro, if you still want to donate and get your 5 requests, $20 will do, not $25. The total in USD came to $126.82 and there were $107.50 in donations so far.

I'm going to finish up the few remaining regular requests over the next few days, and then I'll let the donators know when to send me theirs. Hooray!

Speaking of which, there's one new request in the OP today, and that's Wizardry - Tale of the Forsaken Land (PS2). It's got an unusual mix of classic and modern tracks for a game in that genre... I quite like it.

See ya soon! :)

These are the last two regular requests EVER to appear here. Can you believe it? I'm a little teary-eyed!

Futurama (PS2) - I wish this were better quality, but it's mono 22khz on the disc.

Namco X Capcom (PS2) - A fitting one to go out on! Tons of remixed music from both Capcom and Namco games, and some original music as well.

Sadly, Ace Driver - Victory Lap (Arcade) isn't working with M1 so I can't do that one.

That kills my queue! Now, donators can request their 5 and I'll start working on those. :)

Oh, thats kind of sad, but, you will still put up what will definitely be good soundtracks of your choosing, so that is still great news. :)

Rest In Peace requests, you will be missed.

Quick question regarding file types. Can CRI audio files be ripped in any way? The ones I'm trying to extract are from a PS2 game. I've tried Cube Media Player but it won't work.

CRI makes several different file containers. I'm not sure which one you mean.

So, to kick off the first day of no requests.... I have a requested game! Haha, no seriously. Knivesman requested Ace Driver - Victory Lap and I said I couldn't do it, but I got that AND the prequel, Ace Driver - Racing Evolution working! Both are fun techno soundtracks with some great music samples.

Also, there's a few more arcade titles, too:

Knuckle Heads - A great soundtrack with a ton of tracks. The composer wasn't content for just one track per fighter, so each round has a brand new tune!

The Outfoxies - A multiplayer run-and-gunner from Taito. The slap bass is amazing, and the tracks incorporate jazz and funk. Good stuff.

Lastly, VGManiac456 tagged and ordered Pokemon Mystery Dungeon (DS)! Thank you sir!

See, told you guys I wasn't going anywhere any time soon. :) If you enjoy the stuff I'm putting up, please comment and I'll keep my eye out for more similar-sounding games.

Hi Guys!

Two new uploads are in the ol' folders today, both are arcade soundtracks:

Metal Hawk - A nice vertical shmup with music from Shinji Hosoe. It's a 1988 game, so it's a little bit primative sounding, but Hosoe always writes good tunes.

Thunder Dragon 2 - Another vertical shmup, this time composed by Manabu Namiki. It's got great percussion and some epic bass.

Enjoy!

:)

1) i m glad u have ur MEGA! Coz i dont have all ur uploads on HDDs yet
2) Thanks for Wizardry PS2. Glad you liked it :)
3) Was Ace Driver released on CD then?

Outfoxies is awesome game which gave birth to Smash Bros, Power Stone and other "arena fightings" AND still fun to play today!

It was, but my rip is from the actual arcade data. :)

iamwallaman has tagged Rolan's Curse II for the GB! Thank yooooou!

Also new today are two Genesis/ Mega Drive games:

Truxton - Despite it's early sound and lack of percussion, it's quite melodious.

Zero Tolerance - I'm sorry. I'm just.... so sorry. This is the worst soundtrack ever made. Download it for a laugh or to fool your friends. :P

I m still angry about Sega Naomi games...wish they were rippable.. Even sound check is not an option cause it only play samples for 2-3 secs.

At least i m grateful that so many arcade games could be music ripped! I dont even know how all those microschematics work there in actual hardware

Back yet again, But this time I'm trying out some PS2 ripping! Now ED if you see this what software do you use for your PS2 rips? The thing is I'm currently experimenting with PSound and for some reason when I went to rip the Fantasy Zone soundtrack on the SEGA Classics Collection ISO even when the playback was forced at 48000Hz it still sounds funky! If you have any advice for PS2 ripping in general or to fix this issue then please let me know, I would very much appreciate it! And before I go here is the link to the audio file itself so you can get an idea of what I'm talking about!

I know that you're done with requests now, but I was wondering if you would make an exception for "leftovers"? Because I also requested these alongside SK2:

-Kidou Senshi Gundam Seed (PS2) (Brought this up before, but it might have been forgotten under the piles of other requests, heh.)
-Blender Bros. (GBA) (Final GBA request! As always, whether it's a clean rip or not is your call, not mine.)

Hey there, Ruiner! :)

About your Pokemon Yellow Soundtrack, is the music supposed to come out of only a single headphone? I must confess that that is rather extremely displeasing to ear for the majority of the songs, if not downright irritating.

It might be because its in Stereo instead Monaural; this particular Soundtrack doesn't lend to "Stereo-like" very well, causing the end result to hear like it's playing out of only half the headphones. The "S.S. Anne" music is about the only one that comes off sounding okay with this setup.

That's the way the music is programmed into the Game Boy, as far as I know. I didn't do anything special to make it "stereo-like," as you say. I also like to preserve music as originally intended, so I don't want to modify any soundtracks besides the NES stuff.

Also, it's Pokemon Yellow. Surely there's a rip somewhere on the web that has something to your tastes. A quick YouTube search comes up with a whole bunch of results!

Dariusburst Chronicles Saviours is out soon on PS4/Vita/Steam. Digital release for all, + some physical for Vita. Price is somewhere about $40-60 yeah... It includes both port of Arcade version in 32:9 screen ratio (pc version supports dual monitors setup) and "Console" mode which is a bit different, and in your usual widescreen.

Originally Dariusburst appeared as PSP game, developed by authors of Patapon trilogy. Music, of course, by ZUNTATA which is hit or miss. I loved psp version's soundtrack while what i hear from videos of arcade mode is a bit bizzarre even for me. "CS" mode though have new music not represented neither in arcades nor psp before + DBCS includes some tracks from the whole Darius series.

I recommend putting an eye of it if you loved G-Darius or Darius Gaiden or just shmups in general. Price might be offputting, maybe they decided to keep it because of how genre is niche today. Yet, it has nice amount of content (different routes of level progression in OutRun style, different ships, ton of cool bosses) and just a nice game for at least (i dig it's laser mechanics which lets you detach laser, position it and use like weapon or shield).

Random gameplay videos from youtube for anyone interested.

Of course... Brimble had to exclusively use the DAC chip, which couldn't replicate sound at a high-quality bitrate. It was amazing that he could accomplish what he did in the first place!

Howdy! I've got some new stuff for ya:

Galaxy Fight (Saturn) - I wasn't a big fan of the heavy metal track Mike played in today's podcast, but many of the tracks on the OST really kick some butt. Check them out!

After Burner 32X (Genesis) - Very similar to the arcade soundtrack, with a few additions. I believe this is the first time you can find this full OST anywhere on the net.

Neugier (SNES) - An obscure RPG from Wolfteam and Telenet Japan. This one's from composer Yukihiro Takahashi.

Just went for a run while listening to this, thumbs up for a very diverse selection of music. I listen to a few other vgm podcasts as well, and that's something you don't see (or rather hear) very often.

That 'Noisy Pillars' track you played is a remix of an old Jeroen Tel tune that was originally used in a C64 demo with the same name (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_UbTt0MhlOI). This was one of the first - if not the first - Maniacs of Noise "release". The demo had two other songs that are at least as good, if not better.

And you only heard about Jochen Hippel a couple of days ago? Man, have I been posting all these great Hippel soundtracks for nothing? Btw, the 'ch' in his name is pronounced like this (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voiceless_velar_fricative).

Man, I had no idea it was a remix! Drax does give a shoutout to Wave (Tel) in the notes of the .XM file, but it doesn't mention that he wrote the original tune. And while I do listen to a whole bunch of your rips, I guess I just never happened to fall upon any of Hippel's. That's sad, I wish I'd discovered him through you a lot earlier! Annnnd, maybe I'll just stick with calling him "Yoshen" for the sake of keeping my microphone dry. Just kidding! :)

Thanks for the votes! I'll add them to the rest!

EDIT: I'm listening to the original Noisy Pillars and it doesn't really sound anything like the 2001 version. That actually makes me relieved, because now I don't have to go back and credit Tel for the original track next episode. :) It's also probably why Mogensen didn't credit Tel directly for the original track. It was most likely just an homage to the original tune.

I just had another look at that video and it seems they only play the first song. IIRC you could switch between the different tunes by pressing certain keys. If I have time later today, I'll do the whole Noisy Pillars 'soundtrack' for my next update. Jochen Hippel did amazing things on the Atari ST. Listen to Wings of Death ST, the intro and ending are the exact same songs as in the Amiga version, but played on what is essentially an AY-3-8910.

I didn't know what to do with my five requests. There are actually quite a few console soundtracks that I was hoping somebody would eventually request here. But since that's way more than five, I'll probably end up doing them myself at some point.

So instead, I tried to pick some soundtracks that you might enjoy.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (NES) - A Follin soundtrack that is suspiciously absent from your collection. There are 2 NES games with that name, this one was developed by Software Creations and published by Taito in 1991. Btw, you have Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (NES) tagged as a Follin soundtrack but he didn't actually work on that one.

Altered Space: A 3-D Alien Adventure (Game Boy) - Part of the Solstice/Equinox series, music by Geoff Follin.

Bomb Jack (Gameboy) - A short but sweet A.J.Gonzalez soundtrack.

Slap Fight MD (Genesis) - This has the original arcade soundtrack as well as arrangements and a few new tracks by Yuzo Koshiro.

Descent Maximum (PSX) - The PSX port of Descent 2 with a pretty awesome industrial/electro/metal soundtrack. Some of the songs are contributions by Nivek Ogre (Skinny Puppy) and there is also an instrumental version of Type O Negative's 'Haunted'.

I'm working on some rips for you Ruiner:

Game Boy Advance:
Final Fantasy IV Advance
Final Fantasy V Advance
Final Fantasy VI Advance

Nintendo DS:
Final Fantasy III (Winamp choked on this, can you help?)
Final Fantasy IV (Winamp choked on this, can you help?)

PlayStation:
Final Fantasy IV / Final Fantasy Chronicles
Final Fantasy V / Final Fantasy Anthology
Final Fantasy VI / Final Fantasy Anthology

Just tell me how to submit them and I will! So I'd like to request Final Fantasy Origins for PS1 since I can't find its PSF right now. Keep in mind this IS FFI and FFII in one game. Tho seeing as how they are so small youc an probably package them as one and also as spearate rips.

I really don't want to come off as a jerk here, but I don't like adding rips from other people to my collection. I'm very particular about the normalization, EQ, and formatting of what I upload, and everyone does their rips a little differently. It sounds like you have a good enough collection to make a thread with your own rips, though! Maybe you should do that! :)

The New Stuff:

These are all requests from NX666, and one from KusanagiShiro:

Slap Fight MD (Genesis) - I was expecting lots of slappy sounds, but I was sadly disappointed. :) No really, this is a cool selection of high energy tracks with arrangements by Yuzo Koshiro. Worth a listen!

Bomb Jack (GB) - The main event in this album is a very long main theme from Alberto Jose Gonzalez. It's a bit simple compared to his later stuff, but still quite fun. I think this might have been his first commercial game for the Game Boy.

Altered Space - A 3-D Alien Adventure (GB) - The arpeggios! My ears! Wowza! LOL! I'm not sure if track 2 is supposed to sound like that, or if Geoff Follin is doing something with the audio that isn't emulated correctly. Everything else sounds fine.

Indiana Jones & the Last Crusade (NES) - one of my least fave Follin soundtracks, mostly due to the fact that the music is very short, and it sounds like they were just kind of rushing through it to get the job done. Still, it's the Follins, so there are a few gems tucked in there.

Descent Maximum (PSX) - I was able to get most of the song titles and composers per track for this one. Of course, my favorites are the ones from Ogre (Kevin Ogilvie) and Mark Walk, which sound like the precursors to their "Ohgr" side-project. The Type-O track sounds so out of place here. I'm a fan of them, too, but I have no idea why they decided to add them to this soundtrack. It's sludgy goth rock in a sea of techno-industrial. Weird. (Fun fact: I've seen Skinny Puppy and Type-O-Negative live more than once each!)

Final Fantasy Origins (PSX) - Faithful reproductions of Uematsu's original RPG scores.

:)Ah buttnuts. OK. I can still send you the raw files if you like tho. How does that sound? I don't know where you can find FFIII or FFIV DS floating around anymore as 2sfs, and I can zip the files for you so you can add your own rips.

For the GBA stuff, I figured out the arranger is Ryoue Takagi. TOSE did the arrangements and he's the one guy I know FROM TOSE.
For FFII PS, its Tsuyoshi Sekito.
For the FFIII and FFIV DS breakdowns just use the official OSTs. :P
Also did you notice they included Zidane's Theme? I love it when they have hidden tracks.

Anyhow, since you like making your own, I got these up for you:

I've got a query for all of you fellow music lovers. Are there any games out there that you continue to play even though they are, at best mediocre, and at worst, absolutely horrible, because the music is just that amazing. My choices are FF Mystic Quest and Dragon Valor for PSX...I swear I could just sit in Raxis Castle Town for hours without getting bored at all... PS: KusanagiShiro you seem to have forgotten the Decrypt key for your uploads...

---------- Post added at 08:16 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:56 PM ----------

Oh...BTW, I was going to wait for everyone else to pick their five to see if they had soundtracks that I was after, but to heck with it...
The Dog Island (PS2/Wii)
Clock Tower (PS1) Not the remake of The First Fear, the first one on Playstation
Puppeteer (PS3) If you can manage that, I know you're a little iffy about PS3 rips...
Batman: Arkham Origins - Blackgate (3DS/Vita)
and...um...how's about Touch Detactive (DS) Since you already have the sequel, why not the original?

Looking to see if we can get a full rip of Final Fantasy Chronicles on PSX. Now this is FFIV and Chrono Trigger rereleased.

I have a PSF2 rip of it but the battle themes are missing due to being in a file called "Battle.str" and the ending in "end.str". ruiner think you can rip those files to complete the FFIV rip?

The files are as follows that are missing:
ff4-08 - Fight 1 (streamed in Battle.str)
ff4-13 - Fight 2 (streamed in Battle.str)
ff4-28 - The Dreadful Fight (streamed in Battle.str)
ff4-43 - The Final Battle (streamed in Battle.str)
ff4-44a - Epilogue (Part 1) (streamed in end.str)
ff4-44b - Epilogue (Part 2) (streamed in end.str)
ff4-44c - Epilogue (Part 3) (streamed in end.str)

OK! That's the most I've had in a while! Enjoy the new stuff, guys!

Awesome, thanks!

Where did you hide this soundtrack?

Descent Maximum (PSX) - I was able to get most of the song titles and composers per track for this one. Of course, my favorites are the ones from Ogre (Kevin Ogilvie) and Mark Walk, which sound like the precursors to their "Ohgr" side-project. The Type-O track sounds so out of place here. I'm a fan of them, too, but I have no idea why they decided to add them to this soundtrack. It's sludgy goth rock in a sea of techno-industrial. Weird. (Fun fact: I've seen Skinny Puppy and Type-O-Negative live more than once each!)

I think I've seen Type O at least 10 times, they are one of my favorite bands.

Here is the missing composer/title information for this game:

Pain: Larry Peacock
Rusty: Kevin Ogilvie, Mark Walk
Track 9 - 'Untitled' is called 'The Well (Mark 2)' in the DOS version
Track 15 - 'Untitled 2' is called 'Transmode Containment 2112 (Mark 1) (Short Remix)' in the Mac version

Well, most games with soundtracks by the Follins are pretty bad, but have my favorite music ever, so those are the ones I put up with just to listen to them! :)

As far as your requests go, I know I can't do Touch Detective. Both games were requested and only the sequel was compatible with known ripping techniques. I can't do Batman or Puppeteer either. I'll look into the other two, but you can pick 3 more in the meantime.

Oops! Altered Space is now in the GB section. Must've skipped the file during the batch upload.

I was really shocked when I heard Peter Steel had died. Type O would always play in my town just around Halloween almost every year. It was starting to be a tradition. :(

Thanks for the Descent Maximum credits! I'll add those in later today. :)

OK, so Final Fantasy Chronicles - FF4 (PSX) is now uploaded. This contains the battle and epilogue tunes integrated into the soundtrack. As far as the music goes, it sounds a little more rich than the SNES music, but all of the files on the disc are monaural... so frankly, I'd stick with the SNES version.

Also, I've gotten around to updating Descent Maximum's credits, thanks to nx666. :)

Alrighty, you can grab two new albums now:

Clock Tower (PSX) - I had to go through 306 audio files to find 7 minutes of music. That was fun! LOL

The Dog Island (PS2) - What the heck is this? Some kind of RPG? For dogs? IDK. The music is very happy, though. Lots of piano.

Enjoy!

OK! We are slowly whittling down The Playing Mantis' requests!

Rampage Total Destruction (PS2) is new today! It's the same as the Wii version, so I'll consider that filled. Sadly, Legend of Alon D'ar isn't rippable being sequenced in a unique format. So, you still have one more left!

Also, Dunk Hunt (NES) is fixed.

Lastly, there's a NAOMI board arcade game soundtrack: Akatsuki Denkou Senki - Ausf.Achse it's a very nice looking fighting game with some WWII German aspects to the design. There are some dance, jazz, and rock tracks in here, and they're all quite good.

Enjoy!

Enjoy the tunes!

I'm probably going to get some flak for this, but...why is it that Treasure couldn't do a really good soundtrack on Genesis I was listening to the Gunstar Heroes soundtrack yesterday and while some songs were okay, most were just 'meh' and a few were cringe-worthy. Of the other treasure games I played on the Genesis, Mcdonald's Treasureland Adventure and Dynamite Headdy were fine if not relatively forgettable, but Alien Soldier is teeth-curling (which really confused my orthodontist). Meanwhile, Mischief Makers on N64 and Silhouette Mirage on the PS1 have fantastic soundtracks as does Stretch Panic on PS2. So, what was it about the genesis that was the issue?

Happy holidays ruiner! This a great tracklist! :)

Thanks! Same to you! :)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, I know some of you guys like Yoko Kanno and her soundtracks. I've got some goodies for you, plus a few more! These soundtracks can all be found in the FM Towns section! Remember, then system used the same sound chip as the MD/ Genesis, so these will sound very familiar:

Nobunaga no Yabou - Tenshouki
Nobunaga no Yabou - Haouden - Both of these, from Kanno, have some great orchestrations. She really knows her FM sounds!

Doukyusei
Doukyusei 2 - From Manabu Kunieda and published by Elf. Two visual novel games featuring your typical schoolgirls and some hentai. The music, however, is light and jazzy, and very nicely done.

Daikoukai Jidai II - This game is part of the Uncharted Waters series, which appeared on the NES and SNES. It's a Koei strategy game, so naturally the music is courtesy of Yoko Kanno! We get to hear her go outside of the typical Asian-inspired tunes this time around, since the game is about travelling worldwide and not just through China.

Aoki Okami to Shiroki Mejika - Gencho Hishi - From Michiru Oshima, and part of the Genghis Khan series of games. There's some great use of the sample channels and stereo effects in this worldly soundtrack.

That's today's haul, but I'll be back with some arcade tracks from Shinji Hosoe and some others tomorrow!

Alright here's the rest of the stuff I promised two days ago, but got sidetracked:

FM Towns

Taikou Risshiden - Some fun Asian tunes... very classical. Composed by Michiru Oshima.

Arcade

Raiga - Strato Fighter - FM madness! Mikio Saito handled the level music, and Mitsuhito Tanaka wrote the boss tracks.

Dirt Fox - So.... uh, looks like Shinji Hosoe was really into DEVO for a little while. No, seriously. Check this one out.

Speed Racer - Sure, we've got a neat version of the cartoon theme, and a remix of two, but also some AMAZING techno tracks from Hosoe that rival the original Ridge Racer. Delicious.

Tecmo Knight - Tecmo's sound system was so "ick" sometimes. But Mikio Saito knew how to make it work!

Enjoy! :)

The reason you're not finding it is because it's sequenced music. So just like the Nintendo Puzzle Collection, it can't be ripped without extensive work.

ruiner9
12-21-2015, 11:47 PM
Do you have any tips on ripping sequenced music?

Nope, never done it. In many cases you need to disassemble the game files, and you need to know how to code to do that.

linil
12-22-2015, 06:56 PM
I know the guy who recorded the City Folk soundtrack replaced the game's sound effects with silence so all you would hear was the music. If I could figure out how to do that for GCN games I would do it myself.

EDIT: Of course, the sound effects are probably samples as well, so it'd be real fun to figure out which ones were instruments and which ones were sound effects.

EDIT #2: Seems as complicated as you said it was. Currently, I don't think anyone knows how to open AC's audio image. I only see tools dealing with the actual sequenced files... I presume they're pretty easy to find looking in my other games (just in a folder with a format such as .song), and Animal Crossing seems to be an exception. Why couldn't they have just used a folder?! *sobs*

EDIT #3: Alright, I further inspected the file and it appears not to be any regular .img but instead raw data. I'll stop clogging the thread now, sorry, ruiner9.

TL;DR; Can't be done because the sequenced files are in a special file format unique to the GCN.

Hi Guys! Sorry I've been away for bit, Christmastime is REALLY crazy with my family. Thank you for the wonderful wishes! :) I've got a few new soundtracks to post today:

Joe & Mac (Genesis) - I loved the SNES version's music growing up, and I don't think I'd ever heard Matt Furniss's versions before. OMG guys, they're amazing. Grab this one!

Pokemon Shuffle (3DS) - I mentioned a few podcasts back that Tsukasa Tawada wrote the soundtrack to this and several other Pokemon soundtracks... I'd meant to rip this one for a while, and I finally got around to full tagging it. It's got 47 unique tracks, which is more than I've seen on any of the YouTube uploads. :)

Knight Arms - The Hyblid Framer (X68000) - Ohhhh man. If you remember the X68000 episode of PTR, then you may remember Mike and I absolutely DROOLING over the intro song to this game. Such a wonderful soundtrack!

That's three must-have albums today! Enjoy! :D

Ready for some prehistoric goodness? There's 3 SNES albums up this morning:

Joe & Mac 2 - Lost in the Tropics - This one picks up where the original game left off, with more tribal action music.

Dino City - I like this OST a lot! It's kind of laid-back and groovy. Definitely fun to listen to.

Mario's Time Machine - OK, so this is more historic than PREhistoric. :) It's not mind-blowing, but there are some really neat arrangements of the Mario World themes inside, especially the castle and athletic themes. It's worth a listen!

Hope everyone had a great new year! Now it's back to work for me, and hopefully some time for more releases. :)

I do believe I never cashed in that last donation request... so if not, My last request is a duology. The Dragon Slayer: Legend of Heroes duology for PC Engine.

I played Trails of Cold Steel recently ruiner. Its a good game, and the Trails in the Sky trilogy, the Zero/Azure Duology, and the Cold Steel Duology all tie in as one big series.

I have a couple new Nintendo DS soundtracks today!

Break 'Em All - A very lush-sounding set of tracks from acclaimed composer Dota Ando.

Simple DS vol. 01 - The Mahjong - Oh man, I have no idea who wrote these tunes, but they are GREAT! There's a wide variety of genres here, and it's some of the nicest sequenced music I've heard on the DS. Totally worth checking out.

Enjoy!

Thanks ruiner. I'm working on ripping Popful Mail for PC Engine myself. The funny thing about Popful Mail is...the Mega-CD version and PC Engine version had different voice casts. PC Engine had Mail played by Mariko Kouda of Twinbee fame...but the Mega-CD versio had the vastly superior voice of Megumi Hayashibara (AKA Lina Inverse, Rei Ayanami, Female Ranma, Lime, Nuku-Nuku, Jessie from Pokemon, etc.) as Mail. They even wanted to do an OVA at one point, no one picked it up. :P If you like I can supply the ripped vocal from the OVA for you

Anthem is a great band. Two of their members (Naoto Shibata and Akio Shimizu), are also the guys behind all those awesome 'Perfect Selection Battle' albums Konami put out in the 90s.

But wasn't Xanadu actually released in 1985?

You're correct, nx666. Xanadu first came out on the PC-8801 on October 27, 1985.

Great!

In case you need some suggestions: the Nanostray (NDS) soundtrack is very similar to the Iridion music and pretty good as well. I also like Jackie Chan Adventures (GBA) which combines East Asian melodies with demo scene stuff.

The GBC/GBA era always felt to me like one last hurrah for the European chiptune scene of the 80s. So many fantastic soundtracks that are usually hidden away in crappy licensed games.

Many music genres and styles found their way into video game music, but i wish some of them would have been represented more. Anyway, i just wanna have some discussion on this matter. I also encourage you to listen to both non-vgm and vgm examples.

Space Ambient

Flowing and relaxing, Ambient music often employs sequencers along with cosmic synthesizers which are played in a sweeping and gradual manner. The successive ascending and descending rhythms are enhanced by almost imperceptible patterns in order to create a resonating, distant psychedelic sound. It emerged in the early 1970s from the ambient side of Progressive Electronic with the specific purpose to attune the listener's mind to a state of cosmic awareness. New Age music also exerted a great influence in the later development of this genre. Notable artists: Steve Roach, Michael Stearns, Jonn Serrie, Constance Demby, and Telomere.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AqoW2G4ScSk

While ambient in general is an often guest to games, space ambient usually appears only in space sims. And, as far as i know, space ambient in games is fully digital music unlike golden era of genre, where analogue equipment was used.

VGM Example - X-tension
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QWkVkRMqifA

Tribal Ambient

Tribal ambient combines the theory and atmosphere of Ambient music with traditional instruments and sounds. The use of percussion is the genre's most common feature, with a distinctly hypnotic sound created by drums from the Traditional Folk Music of regions such as West Africa, South East Asia and the Greater Antilles. These include congas, tablas, djembe, bongos and gourd, goblet and Taos drums, whilst more global instruments, percussion or otherwise, are also often used, such as bells, sticks, chimes, flutes and pipes. Together with the usage of Nature Recordings and calming, meditative drones, these lend the style a naturalistic, peaceful mood. Conversely, the style has also been blended with Dark Ambient by artists such as Muslimgauze and :zoviet*france:, producing a more unnerving atmosphere. Vocals are used sparingly, if at all, and often lend a "shamanic" or spiritual feel to the music. Due to mixing live traditional instrumentation with sequenced synth, tribal ambient sometimes shares similarities and overlaps with forms of New Age music.

Such music may appear in games on certain levels, but can't remember whole OSTs of this except for Akuji the Heartless

Minimalism

Minimalism is a genre of music that was developed in the U.S. in the 1960s. It is generally associated with the composers La Monte Young, Terry Riley, Steve Reich and Philip Glass, though there were several other composers who contributed to its development. It gained in popularity in the 1970s, and has been practiced by many American and European composers.

Minimalism is usually recognized for its repetitive nature and relatively static harmony, as heard in the Hindustani Classical Music-influenced, Drone-oriented music of Young and Riley. However, one key aspect of the genre's development was its use of process. One example of this is Riley's In C (1964). The piece is composed of 53 short musical fragments of varying length. A pulse is established, and performers start repeating the first fragment a number of times, then proceed to the next fragment, working this way sequentially through all 53 fragments; the decision of how many times to repeat the fragment and when to move on to the next is left to the individual performer. Steve Reich's earlier tape works, It's Gonna Rain (1965) and Come Out (1966), were created by allowing different tape machines playing identical material to gradually slip out of synchronization (or "out of phase") with each other. Later, he adapted this technique to his instrumental works; Piano Phase (1967) employs the phasing effect by having an ensemble repeat a pattern, then requiring one performer to accelerate gradually until they are playing the pattern one beat "out of phase" with the rest of the ensemble.

Really can't find any examples in videogame soundtracks except for the wonderful music from "Lost in Shadow" (Wii)

Gamelan

Gamelan is a style of traditional music originated in the island of Java in Indonesia and representing part of a larger Southeast Asian "gong-chime culture". Strictly speaking, the term "Gamelan" refers to ensemble of instrumentstypically consisting of metallophones and gongs, sometimes augmented with drums, flutes and human voicesbut the term is often used to describe the music played by those ensembles as well.

Over time gamelan music evolved into many variations, ranging from exceptionally slow-paced and conservative "royal court" styles to fast-paced and entertainment-oriented "village dance" styles. However, almost all kinds of traditional gamelan performance have three distinct features:

-They are very, sometimes even extremely long from Western perception (up to six hours of continuous playing without distinguishable breaks between the pieces)
-The composition serves only as a basis for 'controlled improvisation', this usually taking form of slight variations in ornamentations
-In a traditional setting, gamelan performance is almost never given for the sake of music in itself. It almost always serves as an accompaniment for a ritual / dance performance / drama / shadow puppet performance.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7V5UncUNcCU

Well, of course there are some games made in Indonesia like DreadOut and INheritage: Boundary of Existence, which use gamelan in their soundtracks. But other than that, it's pretty rare to encounter.

VGM Example - Monster Hunter 4

Jungle

Jungle is a fast-paced, often chaotic-sounding form of Electronic Dance Music which had a strong underground following in the United Kingdom during the early 1990s. Its sound is built upon heavy basslines, greatly syncopated breakbeats and occasional use of vocals. Originally used synonymously with Drum and Bass, the term Jungle is now typically used to refer to the earlier, rougher, rave-influenced side of the genre. It tends to emphasise a Reggae influence, best exhibited in the subgenre of Ragga Jungle.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d6pgrdfE3BE

Well, there were many drum'n'bass tracks in vgm of late 90s/early 2000s, and jungle appeared at that time too. As you may notice, i used Soichi Terada's solo work (of Ape Escape fame) as non-vgm example, so i'll put something else from soundtracks here.

VGM Example - Bomberman Hero

Electro

Electro is a genre of Electronic Dance Music which emerged with the development of early sampling technology and the introduction of the Roland TR-808 drum machine and is closely associated with Hip Hop's formative years in the early to mid 1980s. The style is defined by TR-808 sounds arranged in syncopated rhythm patterns - often resembling the Funk breaks used in Hip Hop beats - with simple funky bass lines. Other instrument parts are typically created with synthesizers, and vocoder vocals are commonly used and delivered in a deadpan fashion to accentuate the robotic quality of the music. While many of the definitive Electro tracks are, in essence, also Hip Hop, in many instances it is simply electronic Funk and can also be considered an evolutionary link between the work of Electronic groups in the 1970s, such as Kraftwerk, and Techno in the decade following. Electro's influence has long outlived its initial popularity, with nearly every popular Electronic Dance Music genre at some point giving way to a hybridized Electro subgenre.

If i'm not totally mistaken, Amiga etc. had stuff like that in soundtracks

VGM Example - Jaguar XJ220

Gabber

Gabber, meaning "buddy" in Dutch, is a fast-paced, energetic form of Techno, often in the 160-220 BPM range. Its hallmark is a distorted kick sound, which is overdriven to the point of creating a square wave that forms a recognizable melodic tone, as well as synthesised melodies and pitch-shifted vocals. Emerging in the Netherlands, it soon found popularity in the early 1990s, and continues to have a strong underground following in the rave and club scenes across many European countries.

Only heard it in some boss battles of shmups.

VGM Example - Karous

Happy Hardcore

Happy Hardcore is a highly energetic form of electronic dance music, developed during the late 1990s, characterised by an extremely fast-paced 4/4 beat, saccharine vocals, piano riffs and spacey effects. Its popularity was generally contained within Europe initially - particularly Britain, Germany and The Netherlands - although in recent years it has spawned record labels worldwide specialising in the genre. In contrast with many other styles of Hardcore [EDM], the genre tends to be very bouncy and upbeat in nature, hence the "happy" portion of its name.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oAlRtCyr0sQ

No idea where it was in games aside for some japanese rhythm ones.

Acid Techno

Evolving out of the Acid House scene and arguably from German Trance in addition, Acid Techno combines the elements provided from the aforementioned relatives into the frame of regular Techno, tending to be calmer and using a series of Roland instruments like the TB-303 and other synthesizers to utilize its layers. This includes unconventional adjustments among these instruments to achieve its famous "acid" sound.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBdNyhf3omM

While it was pretty common in vgm of 90s, i still think it could have been more; also i don't recal game soundtracks' acid tunes using actual TB-303 sound much

VGM Example - Machine Hunter

Trip-Hop

Trip Hop is a style of Downtempo music that grew out of the Bristol underground in the early 90s. The term was originally coined by Mixmag in a review of DJ Shadow but it wasn't until the mid 90s that the term's definition was solidified to define the emerging Bristolian scene of downtempo from groups such as Massive Attack and Portishead, both of which went on to have large commercial success in the UK.

While it shares the constant and repetitive beats of downtempo, trip hop is texturally a little more busy often using a wide array of samples of both live and electronic instrumentals, with offbeat turntable scratches and vocal melodies whilst almost always maintaining a mellow tempo in 4/4. The beats often invoke a surreal, trippy, dreamy and yet slightly dark atmosphere.

While some (particularly earlier) trip hop was instrumental or used rapped vocals that shared traits with Hip Hop, most trip hop uses female vocals taking influence from Contemporary R&B and Soul that normally sound light and ethereal with lyrical themes being abstract and metaphorical.

The trip hop movement has had a considerably broad influence on the mainstream and has become a popular style both in and outside the UK. No longer considered regionally-centric, trip hop has been a term used to describe a plethora of acts that have melded the trip hop sound with different genres and music scenes, but all are still derivative of the early Bristolian sound.

Most notable examples would be Akira Yamaoka's Silent Hill tracks.

IDM

Intelligent Dance Music, most commonly known as IDM, is a term invented in the early 1990s to describe the sound of a number of electronic musicians who sought to develop dance music beyond the clubs and more into the realm of home listening. The term itself has been the subject of intense criticism, with many citing the "Intelligent" portion as elitist in nature. Aphex Twin, an artist frequently cited as a pioneer of the scene, stated in a 1997 interview: I just think it's really funny to have terms like that. It's basically saying 'this is intelligent and everything else is stupid.' It's really nasty to everyone else's music. Regardless of the arguments surrounding its label, many acts enjoyed a strong underground following after the inception of the term, with Sheffields Warp Records introducing acts like Autechre, The Orbs Dr. Alex Paterson, and B12 on its famed Artificial Intelligence compilation, as well as a number of artists who would enjoy critical acclaim during the second half of the decade, such as Boards of Canada and Prefuse 73.

By the mid-nineties, IDMs style tended to veer away from the Techno and House sound that inspired it, with a number of the key figures either choosing to go further down the path of experimentation or employing a much more beat-focused approach to their work. Squarepusher, another one of Warps biggest names, combined his typically reckless style of Drum and Bass with a number of techniques more commonly found on Jazz Fusion records, further stretching IDM as a useful descriptor of a particular sound, and making it more of an umbrella term. Attempts have been made to alter the name of the genre and shake off the negative connotations, with Aphex Twins braindance description of his own music and Warps electronic listening music proving somewhat popular. Regardless, IDM remains a strong modern scene, with artists like Richard Devine and Arovane continuing this often difficult-to-define style of music.

Breakcore

An extreme form of electronic music which uses cut-up breakbeats and atonal noise, often sequenced at incredibly high tempos, to create a harsh and often unsettling sound. Use of the Amen Break is common, though not necessarily a requirement. Pioneers of the genre include Venetian Snares, Shitmat and The Flashbulb.

Fado

Fado is a popular form of traditional music from Portugal. It mainly consists of melancholy songs usually accompanied by Portuguese guitars or classical guitars. Fado probably appeared around the 1820s or 1840s and was probably influenced by Brazilian and North African Arabic impulses. The first known Fado singer was Maria Severa and the most famous Fado singer around the world is Amlia Rodrigues (1920-1999). The Portuguese word "fado" means "fate" in English.

Now, forgive me, i'm a bit tired so i interrupt here. There are tons of other music styles that are not a big deal in VGM and that's sad. Wish they would be more often.

Hope ruiner9 doesn't mind this post and 'll ever share some thoughts on this. Or any of you, guys/ladies here.

that's 1/5 of what could be mentioned.. Jazz, for example. While it's usual to encounter 1 or 2 jazzy tracks in many games, there are not so many games which OSTs are full jazz albums. Those would be 10 000 Bullets, Side Pockets series and Vasteel. Anything else?

And don't even start on sungenres of metal and hardcore music... Grindcore in game? Dream about it!

Wow, what a wealth of information! I'm no stranger to most types of electronic music, but most of the videos and artists you cited were new to me.

Hmm, a good example of Happy Hardcore would be Rotterdam Nation from Ridge Racer, and actually a lot of the early Ridge Racer game music, but it seems the whole RR OST has been taken down on YouTube for copyright reasons. Weird!

I really like that Fado track, but it's way too far divorced from video game music to make a real appearance in games, as far as I know.

Sentinel Returns is a great example of minimalism in a video game OST. John Carpenter excelled at using only one or two instruments and very repetitive melodies:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tx2WgY98MVE

I'm a big fan of IDM outside of video game music... I think I've mentioned here that Aphex Twin is one of my favorite artists.

Thanks for the really cool writeup, Knivesman! I'm going to visit these artists more and get a better feel for some of the less techno-oriented genres.

Eh, just wanna note that description of genres are taken from RateYourMusic (imho they separate genres better than Wikipedia), though i did spent ~3 hours compiling post because choosing each track from genre and vgm alternative was a treat.

Hey, what idm you like besides AFX? And which AFX you like the most?

Bahamut Lagoon (a weird racing RPG for PlayStation) OST is pretty "jazz". The worst of those genres, for me, is Trip-Hop, I have never liked Silent Hill music... it works on the game, but outside, nah. Also, a too "pompous" music is also a big no-no, the best example is Sakimoto Hitoshi, I know he is regarded as one of the best, but not for me.

Knivesman
01-19-2016, 08:40 PM
Me personally like his work in FF Tactics, but not so much in Radiant Silvergun, for example.

I totally forgot about Lagoon! Thanks. As for Silent Hill, i would separate SH1, SH2-3-4 and SH0/SHH/SHSM; SH1 is early Yamaoka, and main genre there is industrial. SH 2-4 is that mix of trip hop, ambient and everything. And "late period", from Origins to Shattered Memories, AY abandoned trip-hop to some kind of "abstract instrumental hip hop ambient"... I mean, it's kinda different from SH2-4 and many fans hated it because it lacks amount of MELODY sh 2-4 had. While i love SH0 ost pretty much, btw.

Oh! I didn't see the question, sorry! The first AFX album I ever owned was the Richard D James album, and it's still my favorite. I also really enjoy I Care Because You Do and the Ventolin EP. He did a collaboration with μ-Ziq called "Mike and Rich: Expert Knob Twiddlers" which I love. I'm a big fan of μ-Ziq too. I was a fan of The Future Sound of London since before the WipEout soundtrack made them pretty big... I had picked up their "ISDN" live album randomly one day and thought it was incredible.

Sakuraba is responsible for most (or maybe even all) of Camelot's golf games. That includes Mario Golf and Hot Shots Golf. He composed the music for at least one of the Mario Tennis games, too. As expected, they're all fantastic, light, and very jazzy.

I see.

I'm not a huge fan of Richard D. James, but i dig some releases by him.
Polygon Window - because http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BKVlH4h4sWc and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0CVksFFAM9w
RDJ Album - nice impression overall. or maybe because http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BbhZ_T0nyFE
Analord series - just love them. Maybe it's not as complicated as some of his LPs but i really like sound. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u3sQlgtKw0A or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aw-6riBuD5s or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3yHbf7XEXU
I must say, i was really surprised when i understood how melodic AFX music is.

Richard Devine - usually he makes some crazy random sounds for new synths and other promo stuff, but there are some tracks by him which i truly consider a music.
Examples: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWl0pzrB-SE and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4RjJnkU674

Fennesz - well, not IDM but Glitch music. I like how he creates calming soundscapes from noise sounds and textures. You even feel happiness sometimes.
Examples: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lGcPwGqPHO0 and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=16o6vd3QnEM

You may remember gutevolk from Lost in Shadow on Wii. Here's another song by her: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3qzsNxSKj1M

Autechre always amaze me with their sound design. Sometimes you listen them and can't even imagine how they created all those sounds; and their work with rhythm is omg. But, i can't say i love the whole albums by them - more like separate tracks. Examples: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZ7Mu8YJbSU and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1qkMYxt4XYs Really, they make it sounding BOTH slowing down and speeding up... %) And they have some melodies on background, they are melancholic usually.

Venetian Snares is mainly breakcore artist, but my all time fav album from him is pretty IDM-like. I find it very beautiful and lyric. Some tracks: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R8nC8GBUqUs , http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=50TlCtuMPnA and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Uk3SLtEjtE

OVe-NaXx made one of coolest ragga tracks ever - really would like to listen to more like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W2z3RbRyzsM

On the weird side, i like Cristian Vogel. He made techno sound pretty strange. Examples: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1qG-OHe6pc and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_nEgWQ8mx8 and rarely melodic http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJW1Vi7tf0M

Very bright track from Yosi Horikawa http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=10Lan4tLZQA

Ocoeur is also pretty melodic http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9PGnVqynEtw , http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3PsuAqaEPI and dreamy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5jyaUtN5fLs

And, to end this post, Nero's Day at Disneyland. i Just love composition on this track:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1P6CM8gQsg

Yeah, that was my attempt to remind what idm-related music i liked in all these years.

Join Paladin Mike, Dark Mage Ed, and Quest Party Member Todd as they embark upon a musical journey through some of their favorite Final Fantasy titles!

(We apologize for the incidental echo-like effect on Ed’s voice that pops up a few times during the show. Both microphones were picking him up at the same time. We didn’t feel it was bad enough that we had to cancel the episode, though.)

Yeah the length is a bit of a drawback, but considering the game (in the UK) was released as a Midas Pocket Price back then it was pretty good value:

If I remember correctly all games under this name were as little as 5 to 10, as they were designed to be affordable for families with low income or something. Most of the stuff under this title wasn't great, but a few good games like Sanvein snuck through.

I'm slowly catching up with my podcasts, just had a listen to the latest(?) Impulse Project where you guys where talking about the Yaemon track and its use in the Echo Hawk game.

In the early 90s most European game publishers were abandoning the C64 in favor of other platforms. This gap was filled by some of the newspaper publishers who were releasing disk magazines with budget games during that time. These games were often coded by demo groups and that's how a lot of demo music found its way into game soundtracks. Echo Hawk was developed by Depredators, so they probably just used one of their older tunes for that game.

Btw, this SID tune by Yaemon only uses 3 voices. The effect with the noise as part of the instrument that Bryan(?) describes as "4th voice" is actually done with a technique (wrongly) called "wavetable" where an instrument is created by concatenating multiple wave forms (noise + triangle in this case).

And yes, please do a Doskpop episode. If you need some inspiration, listen to this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HCgIp-tqUWE).

In case you care about the technical details, this here (http://www.ucapps.de/howto_sid_wavetables_1.html) is a pretty good description of wavetable sounds on the C64. It's a good podcast btw. I've been listening to demoscene music for almost 30 years now and it always amazes me how many great tracks there are that I have never heard of.

Took me a while to figure out you were talking about Chocobo's Dungeon 2, but yes, it's fixed now!

Hey Ruiner, long time no see! Anyway, I know you stopped taking requests a while back, but you said suggestions are fair game, yes? Well in that case, I think I may have something: Perhaps you can do stereo versions of the NES games I ripped over in my thread? (Thread 64036) I don't think you've uploaded any of those in this thread, so they would make pretty nice additions, don't you think? ;) Well, I'm not sure if you'd accept the MM rom hack rips, though (didn't you say a while back that you wouldn't do those anymore? I forgot). Thanks in advance for giving it a shot!

I'm not sure which track that is, because this set is only partially tagged. I did have a listen through some of the tracks just now, though, and didn't notice any clicking or clipping, so I would venture to say that it's without clicks.

Metal Head (32x) - Pretty awesome FM metal by Jun Senoue & Co.

Jay und die Spielzeugdiebe (GBC) - by Thomas Mogensen (DRAX)

Here's a list of 20 games for you (sorry for the long list, but I've felt it was necessary to add these to future updates for you in the future as part of you suggestion asking).

1. Cadash (Sega Genesis)
2. Cuty Suzuki no Ringside Angel (Sega Genesis)
3. Desert Strike: Return to the Gulf (Super Nintendo)
4. Dick Tracy (Sega Genesis)
5. Galaxy Robo (Super Nintendo)
6. Gamera: Gyaos Gekimetsu Sakusen (Super Nintendo)
7. Gauntlet IV (Sega Genesis)
8. GD Leen (Super Nintendo)
9. Golden Axe Warrior (Sega Master System)
10. Harley's Humongous Adventure (Super Nintendo)
11. Home Alone (Super Nintendo)
12. Jetsons: Invasion of the Planet Pirates (Super Nintendo)
13. Jungle Wars 2: Kodai Mahou Atimos no Nazo (Super Nintendo)
14. Justice League Task Force (Super Nintendo)
15. Mazin Saga (Sega Genesis)
16. Ninja Gaiden (Sega Game Gear)
17. Pac-Man 2: The New Adventures (Super Nintendo)
18. Panzer Dragoon Mini (Sega Game Gear)
19. Skyblazer (Super Nintendo)
20. Thunderhawk (Sega CD)

Again, sorry for that list, but these are what I think should be added to make it fresh (and also because it seems no one seems to request some of the classics in this list).

Whew! You guys reminded me real quick of why I retired! LOL

Anyways, here are the games that nx666 suggested, because I suppose he knows that obscure German Game Boy titles with awesome soundtracks are the way to my heart. <3

Jay und die Spielzeugdiebe (GB) - Translated as "Jay and the Toy Thieves," it's composed by Thomas Mogensen, otherwise known as DRAX in the demoscene. This one is technically sound, but the melodies didn't really grab me. The stereo effect in track 2 is really nice, though.

Suske en Wiske - De Tijdtemmers (GB) - Jeroen Tel knocks another one out of the park. :)

Metal Head (32X, Genesis section) - If you like the Elemental Master soundtrack, check this one out. For sure.

Impossamole (TG-16) - Not a request, but it's in line with the latest PTR. Actually got confirmation just this morning from Barry Leitch that he composed this one himself, so there's a mystery solved! :) It's very cool to see a soundtrack on the PC Engine hardware composed by a westerner... you don't hear that very often. It's a very unique sound!

Enjoy!

Got a quick question regarding most of your SNES rips which I meant to ask a long time ago.

For some reason, a lot of them have really weird volume problems. For example, a lot of them all fade in during the first 20 seconds or so, get pretty loud, then lower their volume for the remainder of the song. Others, like some of the DKC2 songs start out loud and then get really quiet for the rest of the song. Not all of them are like this, for example Final Fight 1 & 3 are just like your rips from other consoles, but 2 has the fade in issue.

Proof: Stickerbush Symphony
Mario World Overworld:

Was this intentional, or just how these songs came out during your ripping method? Your SNES rips are the only ones i've seen that seem to have come out like this.

Anyway, it's great to see so many new rips from you! I've especially been looking for Gauntlet IV.

 No clue. Never noticed it, myself. Are the ones that do it older rips (like multiple years old)? You can tell by the date stamp on the files. I was using a different normalization method back then, which I later scrapped. It's possible that that's the cause. it's also possible that they're flaws in the SPC files themselves.

---------- Post added at 11:20 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:56 AM ----------

So I just tried another runthrough with the SMW SPC set and it's definitely the way that the plugin handles certain sets. the volume oddities are present in the raw wav file before I even attempt normalization and mp3 conversion. The only alternative I have is through another player, which produces a much lower-quality sound. I'm going to have to leave it like this until a better solution is found.

Ah, ok. Thanks for checking it out anyway.

Actually, since we are on the subject of vgm ripping issues, another thing I've been wondering is if in the future more GBA games could become rippable. The ones that aren't are all the ones that do not run on Sappy, correct? Are the other sound drivers simply unrippable anyway, or have they just not been cracked yet?

ruiner9
04-08-2016, 09:13 PM
Sappy games are the only ones that that be ripped with the "high quality" method. Some other games that don't use the engine have been ripped into .gsf format, which produces a noisier sound more accurate to what comes out of a GBA. Some games like Super Princess Peach and a lot of the later Jake Kaufman soundtracks have so far been unable to be cracked. I'm not sure whether they will ever be. To the best of my knowledge, nobody is actively trying to extract those musics at the moment.

I've applied several times for an account there to help tagging some vgm sets but they never reply to me. So I don't think they're taking submissions right now.

Oddly enough I'm having the same problem with the Registration process! It's complete bolics considering that all I want is to download the VGM rip of Bill's Tomato Game for Genesis (http://project2612.org/phpbb3/viewtopic.php?p=8250#p8250) that was provide by a nice old chap of mine that goes by the allies of ValleyBell whom also did that Sonic 1 for Master System FM hack a few years back that you can check out the vgm of here (http://www.smspower.org/forums/download.php?id=10581)! I'm currently in the process of contacting this guy over at the VGMrip Fourms (http://vgmrips.net/forum/index.php?sid=a1417825f29d365248274362b3716d66) & hopefully I can get a response and possibly clear up this whole fiasco! Btw before I head off I've got this cool Fantasy Zone rip (http://download1338.mediafire.com/x7o3azmzitgg/d8ji66wd485e4bt/%EF%BB%BF%EF%BC%B7%EF%BC%A5%EF%BC%AC%EF%BC%A3%EF%B C%AF%EF%BC%AD%EF%BC%A5%EF%BC%8D%EF%BC%B4%EF%BC%AF% EF%BC%8D%EF%BC%B4%EF%BC%A8%EF%BC%A5%EF%BC%8D%EF%BC %A6%EF%BC%A1%EF%BC%AE%EF%BC%B4%EF%BC%A1%EF%BC%B3%E F%BC%B9%EF%BC%8D%EF%BC%BA%EF%BC%AF%EF%BC%AE%EF%BC% A5.rar) that I've made that features both the Original & Arranged Sharp X6800 versions of each track as well as some bonus tracks that you guys should check out!

So I have a suggestion for a soundtrack you might want to look into. I just got done watching a video by the Youtuber SNESDrunk who, as the name might suggest, primarily does videos on various SNES games. He's worth checking out.

Anyway, his most recent video is a review of the game DoReMi Fantasy: Milon's DokiDoki Adventure and in it he mentioned that the game has a pretty unique sounding soundtrack. Gave it a listen (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1WBCKrXfe4&list=PLF4AB0AA962A9E658&index=3) and it's pretty cool. I guess I shouldn't be too surprised though, as it was composed by Dame Bomberman herself, Jun Chikuma. So yeah, if it's up your alley, I think it'd make a great addition to the collection.

Oh and not related to any kind of suggestions, but I was wondering Ruiner: have you heard of the Tumblr blog FM Fridays (https://fmfridays.tumblr.com/)? They post various FM synth based game music, from soundtrack cuts to fanmade/doujin remixes, even a few remixes/edits from the owner of the blog, plus some nifty facts to go along with the music. Totally worth following if you don't already know about it.

Hey Ruiner! I second Dragoneer's Aria for PSP! Could you consider doing Yo-kai Watch 2 for 3DS, Tales of Eternia for PSP, Grandia Xtreme for PS2, and Grandia 3 for PS2? I've had a lot of trouble finding tagged versions of the Grandia soundtracks I suggested. Tales of Eternia was remastered for the PSP release and sounds awesome! I think you guys need to do a Tales of series episode for Pixeltunes and a Kingdom Hearts one. I'm a huge fan of both series and could provide info on them if you want!
