Hey Ruiner I tried listening to the Monster in my Pocket NES OST but it sounds really "muted" like there are some instruments/sounds missing in the music, I'm terrible at Music Terminology so I feel like I can't specify but Fire the Game up on an Console or Emulator and listen to the first level music and then fire up your rip, I'm pretty sure you should a quality difference.

---------- Post added at 04:15 AM ---------- Previous post was at 04:14 AM ----------

Also my apologies but I swear to god and I'm dead serious here, I'm broke until this Friday, I'll try to drop a few bucks during the weekend, Please and Thank You.

Welp, the "M" NES update isn't far off, so I'll earmark that soundtrack as one to update when the time comes.

And also, any donations are welcome, any time up to November 20th! We've already got $20 towards the goal!

For those who still don't sure about the donate, here's some propaganda based on another cool propaganda (recommend to read it aloud and slowly):

"I am a good person.
I have a lots of friends.
ruiner9 is my friend.
ruiner9 is my bestest friend in a whole world.
ruiner9 loves me.
I love ruiner9.
I will do anything for ruiner9.
Without ruiner9 I will be a miserable little wretch with no purpose in life.
I'm going to give ruiner9 all of my money.
I will help ruiner9 take over the world.
I love ruiner9.
I love ruiner9.

Thanks to some Facebook friends on the PixelTunes group, HowardHarvard, and a mystery Russian donator (who was that?) We're now at $80! Just $30 more and we're on our way to another year of VGM awesomeness! <3 <3 <3

Happy Halloween, everyone!

Wanted to pop in and say thanks to Ruiner for all of his hard work, and to the folks who've chipped in towards keeping the archives going for another year. This is one of the best resources of game music online, easily.

I also wanted to throw out some seasonal video game tunes: some of you might remember the blog Go Go GST, who uploaded game rips and various compilations and mixes of game music. Sadly the blog shut down about a year ago, taking most of the music with it. I did manage to save one of my favorites though: a mix of spooky Sega Genesis/Mega Drive tunes called MD Terror (https://soundcloud.com/mendelpalace/go-go-gst-presents-md-terror), which I uploaded to Soundcloud for posterity's sake. It's a good mix of FM synth tunes with a focus on doomy drones and tense rhythms. Maybe give it a listen after you've finished the latest Pixeltunes Radio.

Related to the mix though, I actually tried my hand at a similarly themed mix of creepy Genesis tracks, which I dubbed MD Horror (https://soundcloud.com/mendelpalace/md-horror). It was meant as a companion of sorts to GST's original, and while it isn't perfect (I'm kinda new to editing software and mix making), I put a fair amount of work into. Maybe some of you would like it? (https://soundcloud.com/mendelpalace/md-horror)

I still need $11 to make goal! As soon as the money is in, I'll lock in the subscription for next year!

Hey, Ruiner, when I submitted the tags for the Game & Watch Gallery 4 rip, I got a few things wrong, and I'm fixing them now. Once the file's sent, will you let everyone know the tags are correct now?
EDIT: Here's the updated folder: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B-flW3ubeNg7UG41Y0RzWTNWSEU
EDIT 2: I forgot something else! Track 7: Rainshower and Track 15: Chef need to be swapped. Track 7 plays what should be Track 15, and vise versa.

So I've been going through some of the re-upped/remastered NES soundtracks tonight. I've been reorganizing my music collection of late and since a bunch of soundtracks had mislabled track names or none at all, I was happy to be able to replace some of the old files.

No offense to Ruiner, but I'm starting to wish I hadn't deleted the older versions, because these newer remasters just sound really off to me. Namely for a lot of tracks it just feels like the percussion is so loud it starts to drown out the rest of the track, and thus the main instruments seem muddied. To me this comes out particularly obvious in some of Follin's tracks: the Solstice title theme (particularly after the intro) sounds so weird with the percussion so up front and loud and the other instruments sound so muffled and sometimes they sound like there's clipping going on. It's not just the latest batch either, some of the Contra tracks sound odd and in general the remasters have this quality.

Is this just me?

I don't know if it's possible but is there any chance you could work your magic on the "Battle the Battletoads" track on Shovel Knight for the Xbox One? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oAgnox1Fzx8 Your work on Shovel Knight is SO much better than the original!

To my knowledge, Kaufman never released the NSF files for the DLC tracks like he did with the original soundtrack. Thus, I can't do anything with it. If I'm wrong and the file IS out there somewhere, drop me a link! I'd love to see what I can do.

If possible, could you please do Ice Hockey? I played the heck out of that game as a kid, and it's got some cheery li'l Soyo Oka jams. (It could be that you've done it already and I just hadn't seen it, but it doesn't seem to be in the big folder list linked from the front post.)

Hey I'm jus dropping in after years because i thought of a soundtrack i would like you to provide if you could. If I'm reading things correctly, you're only focusing on NES soundtracks for now, but I would like to request a gameboy soundtrack please! Its Solar Striker, pretty much the best and only shoot em up on the GB. I especially want the "pause" sound effect for a text alert ringtone.

Woah, congratulations on finishing the remaster project! I've got an obscure little request for you when you have the time: Miracle Ropitt: 2100-Nen no Daiboken. It's one of the worst games on the platform and a perfect example of Famicom-boom kusoge, but get this: there's an arranged soundtrack for it. From 1987. On vinyl. From the developers of SUPER PITFALL aughh

Not only that, this is likely Michio Fujisawa's first video game work, both in composition (the Famicom game) and in publishing (the arrange vinyl). He would later go on to be a mainstay of Ys arrange albums, which must have made for an interesting resume. Micronics to Falcom; what a leap. Anyway, thanks again for everything you to to actively preserve our history like this :)

Thanks for the previous ones

The NES Ultima games have good soundtracks

Ultima III: Exodus
Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar

Getsu Fuuma Den is a FC game, but it looks like tags can be found

I can add these to the list!

Is that request out of line?

Sorry, English NES and popular Famicom stuff only. No exceptions.

Man, I really haven't been keeping up with this thread (or site in general really, I've been really busy). Last time I was here you had just announced the NES remaster project, the next time I visit you're completely finished with it! That was pretty quick!

Just got a quick question. So you're only accepting NES requests and aren't remastering any other albums, but what about accepting tags for non NES albums? There's still one or two old requests of mine that I never got round to tagging, and I kinda still want to complete them at one point. Not right now, but in the near future.

It's pretty hard to say what you haven't ripped at this point :)

Here are some suggestions off the top of my head:

Dragon Scroll - Some great melodic pieces by Kouji Murata
Chuck Yeager's Fighter Combat - Unreleased game with Rob Hubbard music. There is really only one track with a pretty good rhythm section
Zanac - good early FDS shooter soundtrack

You can seriously only do NES? For real?

---------- Post added at 02:35 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:32 PM ----------

Does it need to be in stereo? the stereo effect kinda muddies some of the sounds and makes it sound muted, I know you're the sound guy and probably have a career in it so you probably know better but like I feel like my ears are missing certain sound effects and I have great hearing.

It's not that I can't rip others. I'm choosing to do only NES for now, because at the moment it's what's suiting my interest. I fulfilled requests for a good two years for nearly every system out there, and many times it was for music and games I didn't care for. I enjoyed providing music for others but without the personal reward, I got burned out after a while. Focusing on one system means I can set up one MP3 conversion environment at a time and not have to worry about switching back and forth.

As far as stereo goes, this thread started with me doing stereo NES rips, and changing over to mono after 300+ stereo albums would be silly. If you want mono, find an audio editor like Audacity that can blend stereo channels together and convert them to your tastes. Personally, I find the square channel separation more clear and less muddied. But that's just personal preference.

Patrick1287, I will add those to the queue!

Hello

Ruiner, I have a quick non-NES related query. I remember that a while ago you had a game on PixelTunes Radio called Metamorphic Force, which had a pretty cool soundtrack. However, I couldn't find it any of the your folders of games you've ripped. Is this one you got off of another soundtrack, or did you forget to put it up?

The Metamorphic Force music was actually taken from the official soundtrack CD because I couldn't get the arcade rip to sound right. I found the soundtrack here (http://jun1517.tistory.com/471).

Hey ruiner, amazing job compiling such a huge catalogue of videogame music! Loving the NES music. I was wondering if u could re-upload Clash at Demonhead (NES Stereo) and Pictionary - The Game of Video Quick Draw (NES Stereo)? That'd be amazeballs!

Re-upload? I'm confused. If you visit the first post in this thread and click the link to the NES folder, you should see they're in the giant list of downloadable games. I just verified to make sure they're there, and they are!

Thanks for replying so quickly dude. I've downloaded the files a few times but the zip is broken :( Can u verify they're ok (i.e. it's on my end) or re-upload 'em? Other zips I've snagged are grand but these two I can't get into!

I downloaded both of these and they work fine. Try clearing your internet cache, and make sure you're using the latest version of 7-Zip. Hopefully that'll solve the issue!

And finally, a special treat! My pals over at Pixelated Audio just released a podcast featuring an amazing program for the PC-88 called the Orphe Music Disk. It's got some fantastic YM2608 tunes on it, including original music and FM covers of BGM from Castlevania, F-Zero, and more! Bryan was kind enough to lend me the source files for the disk so I could make an album... It's got 40 tracks, and an hour and 40 minutes of excellent music!

Check the podcast out here! (http://pixelatedaudio.com/md1/)

I'm just doing NES right now, but I was excited to do this because I love Turrican's music and didn't even know there was a Game Boy port. Then I listened to the soundtrack and it's... it's... ABSOLUTELY AWFUL.

Oh well. Enjoy, I guess.

LOL! It's not that bad. Although it's a bit on the minimalist side... The GB could do better than this. I think it's by the guys who ported the first botched Mega Drive/Genesis Turrican game (the one before Mega Turrican), which had similar shortcomings in the audio department...

Anyway, much obliged!

Well... Since you're asking... :)

There's an obscure Game Boy game from 1990 or so called Cosmo Tank with some pretty good music by Tsukasa Masuko of early Megami Tensei (as well as many other gems) fame. Think you can manage it?

I heard that you are starting to do GB/GBC soundtracks again. I only have one request for a GB/GBC soundtrack: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4duKVWfxk88

If it cannot be done, that's OK. I will wait until someone out there can rip this magnificent Gameboy soundtrack composed by Toshio Okamoto.

The reason why I think it cannot be done is because the Jungle Wars .gsf file won't play on any program. There's just got to be a way to listen to it.

Awesomeness! Thank you very much.

I love that you're doing some Game Boy again. Some GB requests:

Darkwing Duck - similar to the NES version, but this version sounds better IMO.
Flipull - very catchy puzzle-game music by Taito. I've had a hard time finding any version of this soundtrack.
Gremlins 2 - The New Batch - Classic-era 8-bit Sunsoft, how could you go wrong?! This one has different tunes than the NES version, so it's a completely new soundtrack.
Kung-Fu Master (Spartan X) - very cool action soundtrack.
Mercenary Force (Tenjin Kaisen) - I second this one, very intense and catchy!
Zool - I think the GB version only has one track, but it's a beauty!

Sorry for the high number of requests, but all of the above are really good and deserve a place in your GB treasure trove, so I hope you have the time (no rush)!

Just finished listening to this episode, hard to pick a favorite, probably the Furniss track although the Ultima IV music will always have a special place in my heart. Speaking of which:

There are different versions of the Mockingboard, the most common ones have two AY chips. The AY itself is mono, but on the board the 2 chips are configured in a hard-panned left/right setup in order to create a simple stereo effect. The track you played on the show is the town theme. It's also called 'title theme' because most versions of the game play the entire soundtrack in a loop on the title screen and that particular music usually comes on first.

Interesting. So the AY-format players like ZXTune which play music from single AY-3-8910 chips in stereo are essentially "faking" the capability? I asked Emily if she knows offhand how many chips hers had, just out of curiosity.

EDIT: You were right! Two chips! This board is awesome. :)

There are actually hardware mods for the Spectrum that can create stereo sound, even with a single AY chip. From what I remember they basically attach a simple mixer to the sound chip that assigns each of the 3 AY channels to one (or both) stereo outputs. This is similar to what all the NES or C64 stereo players (or ZXTune) do in software.

There were also Mockingboard-compatible cards with 4 AYs. Wouldn't surprise me if some had even more, due to the off-the-shelf nature of the chips these boards were probably very easy to clone.

This is similar to what all the NES or C64 stereo players (or ZXTune) do in software.

There were also Mockingboard-compatible cards with 4 AYs. Wouldn't surprise me if some had even more, due to the off-the-shelf nature of the chips these boards were probably very easy to clone.

I find it funny that AY demoscene music is stereo by default, yet people freak out if anyone tries to release an NES tune in stereo. :P

Anyhow, KingTengu has quickly tagged and ordered a recently uploaded Game Boy soundtrack, and one that's well worth listening to. Here's the new link!

How about NES versions of Galivan, Crazy Climber, and the JPN and USA Terra Cresta rips?

By the way, the JPN Quinty intro song you uploaded is still the same as USA version.

Ruiner, thank you so much for your rips! They are beautiful. I'm grooving to DuckTales right now. It would've been perfect if you included the Magic Coin music, but it's still so wonderful to hear the rest of the tunes in stereo, including the Transylvania music from the early prototype. Once again, many thanks!!! :D

You, good sir, are awesome!

I know it's been a lot lately, but I just want to make four more requests to complete my wish-list now when we're on a roll with the Game Boy:

Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare (GBC)
Blaster Master: Enemy Below (GBC)

R-Type II (GB)

Hope this isn't too much. I promise these are my last ones. :)

Wow, we're really swamping ruiner9 with GB requests here (not pointing a finger at anyone, I'm probably the most guilty). :) Hope he's OK with it. ruiner9: feel free to tell us off if you need a break. ;) It's just that when you're finally doing GB again, there are a lot of people with wish-lists. There is a 1996 GB game called Hunchback of Notre Dame Topsy Turvy

Tell me about it. :) Especially the second game has some great music, chiptuned R-type by way of David Whittaker.

ruiner9: I have two last GB requests. Yeah, I know I said that the last time, but I forgot these in my previous post, I swear!

Earthworm Jim (GB): Intense 8-bit version of this classic soundtrack, adapted for the GB by Martin Walker.
Waterworld (GB): One of the last chiptune/8-bit soundtracks by Ocean, creators of crappy licensed games with often awesome soundtracks. This one is not well known as it came out late and only in Europe, but it has some good tunes by David Lowe and Martin Walker.

Personally, I'd strongly advise against using GBAMusRiper for a lot of games, since there are some awful errors with it, where pitch bends are wrong, some notes are missing, for example, in Wario Land 4 (Toy Block Tower, Crescent Moon Village).

All three of my GBA requests that worked (Spyro Season of Ice/Flame and Tekken Advance) all sound correct to me, so at least some games come out 100% error free. Though I did find out MUCH later that about half of Tekken Advance's songs don't loop, when I'm pretty sure all songs did in game.

I only just noticed you had started doing more Gameboy games today, nice to see the collection expand. I don't have any new requests though, I never had a huge selection of Gameboy games growing up, and I've been slacking off on buying new ones :P

If you do have the time though, could you probably redo Super Mario Land 2? Looking at it's date I think it was one of the last OST's you ripped before moving to your newer method, so It's plagued with those start of song pops and slightly lower quality.

Oh wow, just discovered this thread !

* awesome work *

Too bad there is not a Vita or PS4 section.

There is a game called Super Robot Wars V and I have most of the songs stuck in my head ^_^"

Just noticed you're missing the Rhumba of Love in your Pokemon XD Gale of Darkness rip, but don't worry I got the sound files and can get it from there. However I have a little problem, I used the in_cube plugin with Winamp and while I can listen to all the songs perfectly there, it gives me an error when trying to export it to any other format. Tried with vgmstream but it doesn't even play the songs oddly enough, let alone convert them.

So I'm just wondering how did you manage to do it? o: I'd be very grateful since I really like that song. Just asking how you got from the original dsp files to mp3, thanks :)

Oh and I did try searching in google, but there's nothing on this specific matter.

If I remember correctly, I did all the GameCube stuff using Foobar2000's plugins. It's much easier to manage than the Winamp plugins.

This plugin (http://www.foobar2000.org/components/view/foo_adpcm) should help you decode some GC ADPCM streams once you install the FB2000 player.

Aha! That was useful info! Unfortunately though, that plugin doesn't seem to work with this game's particular files either... On the other hand I came across this post in the hcs forums just now: "Any reason on why VGMStream doesn't support DSP linked 001/000 files anymore? I updated it and it just...stopped. The files are from Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness" and I can't seem to find any older version of the plugin haha ^^''

Thanks anyway! I'll keep on trying, there must be a way.

Edit: AH! "I think the trick is that vgmstream only supports them when named .ish and .isd, so you have to rename the .dsp files to .ish and the .001 files to .isd."-hsc

Now it works. Wow Gamecube sound files are really intricate.

It was back in 1989 that NEC and Hudson Soft’s TurboGrafx-16 game console took North America by storm… well, maybe not by “storm.” It was more like a passing shower. But overseas in Japan, the system’s counterpart, dubbed the PC Engine, was taking a large amount of market share away from Nintendo and Sega. On today’s show, Mike and Ed tackle “The Little (PC) Engine That Could,” with Mike sharing tracks from TG-16 games, and Ed rocking out with the best that the PC Engine exclusive titles had to offer. Listen in for some familiar composers and some that might be new to the podcast as the guys explain the hardware, the software, and the marketing behind this cool little console.

Yeah, it didn't start to get any love in North America until retro gaming made a comeback. Fortunately it's not too hard to be able to play all the awesome PC Engine games that we didn't get over here!

Also, any requests from anybody? At this point, I'll do NES, GB, Genesis, and TG-16/ PCE.

Personally, I'd strongly advise against using GBAMusRiper for a lot of games, since there are some awful errors with it, where pitch bends are wrong, some notes are missing, for example, in Wario Land 4 (Toy Block Tower, Crescent Moon Village).

I've found the bad outweighs the good, and I much prefer the sound of the cleaner rips. If there are errors, GSF-sourced versions are all over YouTube and other corners of the web.

As a matter of fact, I was listening to your Golden Sun rip a while ago and some songs didn't sound right at all. Not to be nitpicky, I can withstand and understand minor errors (still considerable though) like the ones in WL4, but upon further inspection, I found that in GS you have entire instruments removed, making some songs practically pointless! Haven't checked Lost Age, but most likely is the same.

I named the ones I spotted (name in the title tag, not filename) and made a zip (https://mega.nz/#!QYE3mLjD!do4fDKsXuwpP7vMgauoAQmGa07GjVkSjlYh3InnE8us) so it's easier to compare. Some extreme examples include Enemy Battle (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cBJ_hrNovUY), Boss Battle (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-qlcwZtt2s&t=45s) and Imil (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IsOfq-v5kKo), which are totally unrecognizable at first. As I side note, the Staff Roll theme also seems to be missing, but nevermind.

I know it's not your fault, and I also prefer this sound quality and clarity, but at least in this particular case, you can't really say that the bad outweights are the good ^^''

So dunno, just saying. It's frustrating having to stick with static-ridden GFS versions in the middle of gloriousness, but what to do? I still find it curious that such a great tool can screw up so much a song for no apparent reason, since the original data is what it is, but oh well.

That's true. Anyway, I have some TG-16 Requests/PCE requests-

Startling Odyssey 1 and 2
Sol-Bianca
Star Breaker
Alnam no Kiba
Farjius no Jakoutei: Neo Metal Fantasy
Fiend Hunter

Requests, huh? It's been a while since I requested some, so... I got three for ya!

- Cyber Cross: Busou Keiji (PC Engine; the prequel of Cross Wiber, which Sharrif001 has requested. So I thought I'd request the prequel as well.)
- Devilish (Game Gear; same as the Genesis version, albeit with a PSG sound and a few new tracks)
- Holy Diver (Nintendo; the most hardest NES game to come out of Japan, and named after the famous Dio song.)

This is a backup in case you either aren't doing Game Gear music or if one of the musics requested isn't plausible.

- Eliminate Down (Genesis; I always wonder why this classic Japanese shmup wasn't in the listing, and so I am requesting this to filling in the gaps in the "E" section of Genesis game music)

Apologies if I'm asking too soon after my last request, or if I'm asking for too many things at once, but I'd like to see new rips for the following if you have the time:

Mega Man Legends (PSX)

Mega Man Legends 2 (PSX) - If possible to isolate/clean up, I'd also like the game's cutscene music that seems to be missing from earlier rips (I always wanted a copy of the track that plays before the credits where Mega Man, Yuna/Matilda, and Sera are talking to each other).

The Misadventures of Tron Bonne (PSX)

Thanks, and sorry again if I'm asking for anything too unreasonable!

Hey ruiner! Just noticed there are a couple songs that are not looped in Advance Wars 2 (GBA), they are: Andy's Anthem, Sami's Theme, Olaf's Theme, Drake's Theme, Kanbei's Theme, Sturm's Theme and Map Edit as far as I noticed.

It's weird since the other themes loop just fine, maybe the loop was not applied to those accidentally? Anyways, is there any chance you could fix it?

I racked my brain over that Game Boy sample, could have sworn I've heard it somewhere before, but just can't name it... If you find out, be sure to let us know! :)

Three more Game Boy requests from me:

Choplifter II
Foreman for Real
Ghosts 'n Goblins

Must be the GBA-to-MIDI conversion process that didn't catch the loop. The way they are now, it's not even possible to loop it using a wave editor, so no, there's nothing I can do to fix it. I can upload the old lower-quality rip, if you want. Those have the proper loops but don't sound as good.

Agreed. Old C64/Amiga heroes like Brimble, Jonathan Dunn, and Jeroen Tel doing Game Boy music is a rich treasure trove not explored by many. There's a lot of SID-meets-DMG goodness to enjoy, although I have to say that of these three, Foreman for Real is my favorite.

Continuing with a few more GB requests:

International Karate 2000
Last Action Hero
Quarth

Adventure games have been seeing quite the revival lately, with titles like Broken Age and Thimbleweed Park calling back to the golden age of the genre, where games like The Secret of Monkey Island and Maniac Mansion ruled PC game shelves. Composers like Peter McConnel and Frank Klepacki made names for themselves on these early titles, creating atmospheric and sophisticated soundscapes in which one could easily get lost. Join Mike, Ed, and special guest host Brian (of the fledgling podcast Pixel Stories,) as they share music from some of their favorite Point ‘n Click Adventure titles both old and new!
