Complete Score Released yesterday

THE LONG GOODBYE
John Williams

Quartet Records presents the first complete release of John Williams’s score for The Long Goodbye, a film directed by Robert Altman in 1973 and inspired by the Raymond Chandler novel. The film starred Elliot Gould as Philip Marlowe, with Sterling Hayden, Nina Van Pallandt, Mark Rydell, Henry Gibson, a cameo appearance by David Carradine, and an uncredited Arnold Schwarzenegger!

This film represents the second score by John Williams for a film by Robert Altman; it was preceded by Images (1972) and some episodes of the TV series “Kraft Suspense Theatre” in the early sixties.

For this revision of the Philip Marlowe character, Altman asked Williams to provide a most unusual score: one single theme repeated throughout the film with many variations adapted for various scenes. The tune, one of Williams’ most inspired from the seventies, is presented as a song (lyrics by Johnny Mercer), with vocals by Jack Sheldon and Clydie King. Williams also presents the theme in different jazz versions (with the Dave Grusin Trio), as a tango, in blues style (“Night Talk”), as a warm love theme for trumpet and strings, on sitar (for the hippie party), or in Mexican variations for the last part of the film (“Mariachi,” “Guitar Nostalgia”). Williams arranged and personally supervised the different versions, in addition to adapting the song as underscore (“The Border, “Marlowe in Mexico, “The Mexican Funeral” and “Finale”). The lengthy 10-minute “Main Title” sequence deserves special mention as an example of how Williams developed his tune.

No album of The Long Goodbye was released at the time of the film, nor was the single with the Jack Sheldon and Dave Grusin versions prepared by United Artist Records. With the passing of time, the tapes for many United Artist films of that period have been lost, but eight years ago part of the score (about 23 minutes) was released by Varse Sarabande in a limited edition CD that quickly sold out. To assemble this album we had to do some detective work, but that has been possible thanks to the efforts of MGM. In their vaults they found (in addition to the tape containing the versions included in the previous edition), two tapes containing new versions: an alternate of Dave Grusin, a jazz piano version featuring Williams himself, and some takes from the underscore. To complete the underscore assembly we used two different 35 mm. magnetic music stems in mono with acceptable sound quality. Finally, a trio of bonus tracks (found on the tapes) concludes the album: a fascinating and fun vocal in which singer Clydie King ad-libs while getting her voice into the song’s vibe, a rehearsal of the beach house party chorus with Jack Riley and Clydie King singing with the crowd, and a rehearsal of the solo violin for “Tango Version.”

So here, finally, is the original concept of John Williams for The Long Goodbye, as conceived by Robert Altman. Because of the many repetitions of the tune and the different sources from which the cues are drawn, this album is not presented in film order, but arranged for pleasant home listening.

Go to The Internet Movie Database for information on any film composer or film. The information available is astounding.
If you click on the Cast and crew tab located just after the cast list, the page opens up and gives you all production personnel, which will always include the composer
The Love God? (1969) - Full cast and crew (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0064606/fullcredits#cast)

To answer your question, Vic Mizzy did compose the music for The Love God.

Agreed. It would be outstanding to hear this... such a strange, oddball film by Robert Altman, too. But Williams sure got some good results from their collaboration (i.e. IMAGES).

That movie sure had it's problems...Peter Cushing worked on the film for a day or so, then found out his wife had emphysema, then left the set. The director Seth Holt died of a heart attack on set at the age of 47.

I have some cues for Merlin Season 3 ripped from the composer's web-site. I think I used to have a very poor promo for Legend a few years ago, but I don't anymore and have no idea where it came from. There is no promo for Sucker Punch. There is the OST, and a few score tracks ripped from various composers. That's it. No score or rips to be had. It is a much wanted thing.

---------- Post added at 01:25 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:14 AM ----------

Does anyone have the expanded/complete boot for Batman Beyond in a decent quality?

Don't suppose you'd be willing to up the cues, or lead me to the website, so I can get them myself?

I am aware that Legend of the Seeker and Sucker Punch have very little CD wise to offer... I was actually curious if anyone was willing to do a rip. I don't have the DVDs myself... or I'd at least attempt it. Ripping music from other formats (like: mkv, mp4, avi, ogg...) doesn't always turn out great.

A 1998 Sci-fi comedy with playful music by Alan Silvestri. The officially-released OST on Polydor included only 3 tracks of Silvestri's score. This disc has 17 tracks totaling about 37 minutes. Good stereo sound with some tape hiss. No dialog or sfx.

Most who download don't say thanks, or like or anything. As for sites, I know Gamefront is being used by more members. I need to look into it, but dl speeds there, for me, are truly zippy.

I'm using sendspace at the moment. The upload speed is decent, you don't need to be registered to UL/DL, and so far i've never had any failed attempt to upload files there.

The download speeds are fast and allows multiple downloads at the same time.

Mediafire Has good dl speed, and you can have multiple dl. But I have been having trouble with upload speeds, very slow and freezing. AND, there is a 200mb limit, so a lot of files have to be split.

SUMMER RENTAL (Alan Silvestri) (Lossless/FLAC)

A 1985 John Candy comedy with laid-back music from Alan Silvestri (some electronics, and a distinct Caribbean flair). 10 tracks totaling about 25 minutes. Good stereo sound with slight tape hiss. No dialog or sfx.

Is it a score piece, or an actual song? If actual score, then probably it is not available. I did post a set of score samples ripped from composer's web-sites, but no official score album has ever been released (and with the cancellation of the series, I doubt there ever will be). If it is a song, though, then there are fan blogs that track that. Just google csi miami music, and I am sure a few will pop up. These types of blogs are dedicated to listing every va song that plays in a show every episode of every season. Then, you hunt them down and get what you want. Assemblages like this are where the "unofficial" soundtracks for things like Charmed, Supernatural and Smallville come from.

Exactly. And sometimes you miss stuff because there wasn't much announcement and the CD sold out before you got a chance to buy (for a decent price).

Use to have it. Wasn't one of Desplats' best... could hardly hear the music in the film. I don't think he is suited for a big time adventure movie. But the film was kinda fun, kinda clunky... (characters appeared and disappeared without introduction... bad editing) and thought I'd like to at least hear the wrap up music.

I don't intend it to sound rude, besides it's in a form of question if you didn't noticed. And I specifically noted there that "...it's a thread for scores and not a fan site dedicated for any particular show/tv series concerned with the actors but music?" So what's the big fuzz there? You momentarily jump into your own conclusion so maybe you should clarify things first which is btw my intent before you act like a preacher and say your piece.

i suggest you get your post count up to a minimum of 5, because then private messages are enabled.
then you can pm the original poster (in case he/she is still active) and maybe kindly ask for a reup, or maybe one of the persons that dled it can help you, via pm.

Maybe link was removed bevause it was a forbidden label. In that case private messages are the way to communicate anyway :)

just say thanks in a cluple of threads, not hard to raise your post count.
Private message then are enabled, sometimes with a bit of a time lack.

KEEPING THE FAITH ("Extended" score by Elmer Bernstein) (lossless/flac)

For this 2000 romantic-comedy about a complicated love triangle, Elmer Bernstein created a charming score with gentle humor and a touch of breezy jazz. This disc, labeled as an "extended score," has 40 tracks of music (no vocals) in great stereo sound. No dialog or sfx.

What do we think about starting a new thread strictly to share DVD commentaries? I know I've shared a few in the past, and there are others who have contributed many more to this board.

I personally am looking for a rip of Dwight Little's director commentary of the recently released Halloween 4 blu ray. I already have the special edition DVD, but apparently the blu ray excises some of those features. Plus I don't have a BR player yet, anyway.

Looking for the Complete Isolated Score to Peter Pan by Oliver Wallace. Every link that I found was removed. Can anyone please help me? I need the complete score without dialog for a school play. Thank you!

You probably don't want this, but isn't this faster: Amazon.com: Peter Pan: Classic Soundtrack Series (1953 Film): Sammy Cahn,Sammy Fain,Frank Churchill,Oliver Wallace: Music (http://amzn.to/SVMqwE)
Or isn't that an isolated score?
Besides the fact the school play then uses an official release ?

Hello Al.Coda,

Thanks for responding. Actually, I have the soundtrack to the Peter Pan movie. There is a lot of background music we can use. Unfortunately, all of the songs feature vocals, which we can't use. That is why I am looking for the isolated score which features only the music. I don't want to get too much into detail but we have been doing plays (musicals) for the past six years. We've been basing our plays on the movies instead of the broadway eqivalents by using the scripts from the movies and rewriting them for the stage. Some movies, I have been able to use the isolated scores off of the DVDs, but we are not always fortunate this way. Peter Pan on DVD does not have an isolated score so I googled the score and was taken to this forum. It was once available here but the links have been removed. I was hoping someone out there would have that score that they could share with me. We probably shouldn't do what we do but we limit our plays to family and friends of the students (grades 1 - 12) and don't charge admission. We don't do any commercial advertising because of this. We accept donations to the school. I have been involved with script writing and editing and I also do video effects (titles and credits) and audio editing.

Does anyone have Vangelis's COSMOS soundtrack?

There is a soundtrack to Cosmos, but if I remember correctly, most of it is classical.
The bulk of Vangelis' music used, though, came from his "Heaven and Hell" album.
You might be better off getting that...

About David Arnold Godzilla, next week will be on sale a new 3CD set release of the score.
It's basically the same thing as the LLL set, but added a couple of new alternate cues, and with disc 3 being a replication of the album that Arnold envisioned at the time for a release of a soundtrack, but which never came to happen.
Essentially it's of interest to people who don't own the LLL set, since all the limited copies of that release were sold.

Don't know if this has been posted before but...

On the Prometheus Blu-ray, in the 3 hour 40 min documentary "The Furious Gods", there is a segment on scoring the film, and it has 2 of the titles from the sessions:

1m01 - "Opening Development"
4m28 - "Planetarium - David Theme"

An extended snippet of the latter plays in the section, that was originally meant to be used instead of Gregson-Williams' score in the scene where David explores the holographic 'Orrery'.

Die Hard 2 is coming out from Varese.
Die Hard 2: Die Harder - The Deluxe Edition (http://www.varesesarabande.com/servlet/the-1077/Die-Hard-2-cln--Die/Detail)

DIE HARD 2: DIE HARDER The Deluxe Edition
Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
Music Composed and Conducted by Michael Kamen

2 CD Set

We are thrilled to offer this 2-CD Deluxe Edition of one of Michael Kamens action masterpieces Die Hard 2: Die Harder. We are on the cusp of beginning our 35th anniversary celebrations for 2013 but thought wed get the party started early with this special release of a Kamen classic. A more-varied and free-handed score than the first Die Hard, Michael Kamen pulled out all the stops and went for it. He even threw in a fabulous ode to Sibelius by incorporating the thrilling Finlandia.

Bruce Willis returns as the heroic cop who battles not only terrorists, but also an incompetent airport police chief (Dennis Franz), the hard-headed commander (John Amos) of the Army's anti-terrorist squad and a deadly winter snowstorm. The runways are littered with death and destruction, and McClane is in a race against time. His wife (Bonnie Bedelia) is trapped on one of the planes circling overhead, which is desperately low on fuel. It's all-out war, a heart-stopping, jet-propelled journey filled with excitement and terror.

Snow will soon be falling over much of the world, which makes it the perfect time of year for Die Hard 2!

Fasten your seat belts!

Is anyone willing to share this out of print gem from Quartet Records?:

Attention! THIS is the Complete soundtrack as heard in the movie as opposed to the more common album version and Kritzerland's expanded release! Please PM me if you have it, since it's out of stock and I cant afford the price on e-bay and amazon. Thanks very much.

Was there ever an OST release for the animated series "The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest"? The title music still brings me the chills I used to get during childhood! If anyone has such a compilation or atleast a high quality version of the title music, I would love to get it :-)
