Does anyone agree with me that OSTs should not be here?
Does anyone agree that if someone wants an OST they should buy it and support the brilliantly talented person who wrote it?
If we love soundtracks, then why don't people want to support the composers? It's not as if OSTs are that rare! Here is the Smurfs:

Amazon.com: The Smurfs: Original Motion Picture Score: Heitor Pereira: Music (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005AKHZS0/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&me=&seller=)

And here is Captain America:

Amazon.com: Captain America: The First Avenger: Alan Silvestri: Music (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0050PLTJQ/sr=1-1/qid=1312356705/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&me=&qid=1312356705&sr=1-1&seller=)

Does anyone agree? Personally, if I find a soundtrack that I want, I make sure it's not for sale to the public before I download it. If it's for sale to the general public then I will buy it. I enjoy spending that money for the sake of that composer or film studio!

Not that there is an excuse, or that it matters, but I can't afford to do this. After paying bills, and buying food, and (hopefully) meds, there is nothing left. Now I know, those at FSM say "well, too bad". If I can't buy it, I can't have it, yadda, yadda. I am not saying that's wrong. But, I guess I am just spoiled. I want to listen, so I will continue to dl from here, or other places. As to the morality of that, we have gone round and round on that with various members, who all have differing points of views, and their own private "rules". There are not many common thoughts, and the pirates vs. non pirates crowd just never really agree on much.

Hmmm...okay. Interesting thought. I didn't quite get what you were getting at at the beginning...what do you mean "I am just spoiled"? And do you mean that you can't afford to buy OSTs? That's understandable...they are rather pricey sometimes...

Okay, so people have different views. I'll shut up.

I agree in principle, although I find this statement ever so slightly condescending.

I download in the following circumstances: a) If something is not available, b) It is available but exhorbitantly expensive - ie sold out, fleecing auctioneer, foreign import, etc, and c) to sample something I'm not sure if I want or not. If I sample it and hate it, it gets wiped out and never thought of again. If I sample it and I like it, and it is anywhere near plausible for me to buy it, I buy it.

If it's some limited edition which sold out thirty seconds after release because prospectors bought all the copies and then stuck them on ebay for 200 a piece, stick that - I'll download it. The disc sold out so the composer got his money, and the label got their money. They cannot physically sell any more. It can get pirated a billion times and nobody has lost anything - but the people who can listen to it when they otherwise wouldn't have been able to can be happy and probably more likely to put down some doubloons next time something is released.

If it's a foreign import and I have to jump thruogh idiotic hoops to get it (as an example - some Japanese firms WILL NOT SELL outside of Japan and you have to contract a Japanese person to buy it for you and forward it to your country - and they want paying too, of course) then equally, I contend that the label and the composer have not lost anything because effectively I was willing to buy the album and they said "no, not interested in business from your territory" - so that's good too.

Of course all of that is still illegal but I firmly believe that it is not morally wrong.

I believe most people here pursue that policy to some extent or another; there are only a minor few who outright state "f**k it, I want what I want" and those people I do not respect. Folk here are generally good people and they do what they can.

And I will not pursue this any further as I remember what happened to this thread the last time it turned into a heated discussion... If anybody wants to continue along these lines, may I respectfully request that we do so in the discussion thread... :)

Peace

Does anyone agree? Personally, if I find a soundtrack that I want, I make sure it's not for sale to the public before I download it. If it's for sale to the general public then I will buy it. I enjoy spending that money for the sake of that composer or film studio!

Composers almost never get anything significant from soundtrack sales unless they are producing the album themselves. Anything released by Intrada, Varese, or generic music labels such as Sony, etc. is guilty of this. In many instances, composers don't even see any royalties from these sales, just the film studios and labels. To give you an idea of how little money they actually get, last year I was talking with a very prominent composer who told me that "maybe by [the year] 2020 I can use my album royalties to eat at McDonald's."

Supporting the composers? Not by buying their soundtracks you're not. Not directly anyway. You could argue that buying their soundtracks leads to more of their scores being produced, but people are going to buy enough for that to happen in most cases anyway. Not to mention that many composers have been involved in leaking their scores online and trading, and some have even been members here...

Also, while not a great argument, it is worth noting that prices on film score soundtracks have started getting out of control, with many labels "hiding" those costs with outrageously inflated shipping rates (I'm looking at you mostly, Varese). This isn't helped by labels starting to release many standard scores as "limited edition" runs, which very often get reprinted after they're sold out anyway, which leads to people buying several copies and selling them for ridiculous prices on ebay and amazon. As I said, not a great argument because in order to keep receiving many of the better scores, the smaller labels need to be supported. At the same time, they know we're going to buy this stuff and charge higher prices for them. They claim it's due to the rise in piracy, but that's completely (well, almost completely) bogus. All they're doing is keeping many of the people who would legitimately buy it from doing so, and often resorting to downloading it anyway, which, if the score is sold out hurts absolutely no one and shows that they should have produced more copies to begin with.

You are not wrong for choosing not to download commercially released albums and buying them instead. I buy everything I can myself and currently own over 500 scores on disc. But don't think this supports the composer.

(Also OST means Original Soundtrack. OST does not mean "commercially released soundtrack". Everything here is an OST, whether commercially released or not)

there's no section here in this forum for movies.
there's no section for games, applications, etc either.
and if there were movies allowed, i dont know why crappy xvid is acceptable.
x264 is far superior. im glad the xvids get what they deserve.
also 1080p is the solution. not the 1.5gb 1080's either, but at least 7.5gb.
With the right settings and the right bitrate, you can have teh best quality of a movie :)

@Burgundrex - I've checked "the code" in IMDB and there are a number of titles like this. EXPLAIN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

Even a composer's name would help... assuming you know what a composer is ?.

Film or TV series ?.

Year of production... director.... stars ?.

Obviously not all these things are needed, but "the code" is just a little on the light side.

I totally agree with Babydoll. Really good music is quickly turning into a luxury these days. I'm not as interested in the latest releases as I am in the older and harder to find scores, but still. Some of the prices I've seen for the rare stuff... hot damn.

ROME - Jeff Beal season one can still be bought. I did a few years ago. As I was looking for season II I stumbled upon the composer's page here: Jeff Beal ROME (http://www.jeffbeal.com/Pages/FILMS%20Pages/Rome.html#). That is the only place I know where season II soundtrack can be heard. I tried to grab the tracks with Freecorder but the quality from the page is really bad. Has anyone a better way to record or save the streams?

Probably not. They rip @ 128. I am finding that on most of the sites I rip. I bet they deliberately keep the available bit rate low, to allow the music to be heard, but not at a high enough rate to make a good album of. I don't think the program used matters.

Actually, Rome seasons 1 and 2 rip @ 192k.

If we love soundtracks, then why don't people want to support the composers?

My humble opinion on the above recent topic:
ffshrine is a wonderful source for obtaining rarities, promos, and such. It seems right that people should buy readily-available OSTs. However, I no longer automatically do that since I end up disliking so many. That's why download sites like iTunes are such a blessing in that not only can you listen to the music first, but buy just the tracks you like.

Unfortunately, some labels don't partake in these services. Their option to "buy or do without" is entirely legit, and I often do without. But it's also no surprise that by providing only those 2 options their releases end up shared in other ways.

Very cool. I'm always checking composers sites but never thought to check his though Rome is a favorite of mine. Nice to have season 2 and some different cues from season 1. Thanks for the info!

I can say for a fact that there have been numerous downloads I have gotten that have resulted in purchasing the CDs, many of which were still in print. I brought this issue up in the Film Score Monthly blog, asking if the self-righteous among them would acknowledge this but curiously no reply. There is not just one side to the downloading issue. There are of course many downloads of CDs that are no longer in print, and sharing the music is harming no one. Having samples of music on YouTube is also another way where a person can have the opportunity to hear the music, then decide if they would like to purchase it. This is quite reasonable. The FSM blogger presume apparently to speak for the artists creating the music, and likely are hypocrites for downloading themselves.

Folks, remember what happened to the last Film Score Hunt thread. For those of you who weren't around at the time, let me relate the story: The thread degenerated - like so many do - into argument and offtopic discussion, moderators took offense, closed the thread, and forbade starting a new one. Thanks to some fancy footwork and a fevered bout of diplomatic emailing from Yours Truly, Sarah agreed to open up a new thread on the grounds that this one didn't get "shitted up" (verbatim quote) with off-topic crap. A discussion forum was created explicitly for the purpose of moving all that stuff out of this thread in order to guarantee this wouldn't get flushed down the toilet like the last one.

Social thing it may be, bot or not, who knows? But launching into a page of "OMG THE SPAMMER IS BACK! / WHERE THE HELL ARE THE MODS? I WONDER IF IT'S AN FSM SPY?" every time the spammer comes back does bugger all to stop the spammer except provide him with attention, and on a wider scale tentatively violates the particularly rigid regulations imposed on the thread as a condition of its rebirth...

So please, folks - if you must have repetitive, circular conversations about the spammer... move it to the discussion thread... PLEEEEEEEEEASE!!! ;)

NEW THREAD POLICY: all links must go in their own thread

each soundtrack must have its own thread. this may be in addition to being posted in megathreads/collections threads. this isn't retroactively enforced, but will be for new posts.

this is to make searching easier, both in-forum and in search engines. additionally, it'll help with a new forum feature i have planned that should roll out in the next few months ~

while everyone gets used to this, please kindly and politely remind anyone that forgets or isn't yet aware of the policy.

thanks <3

NOTES:
On FunnyML's Original Share, There are 21 Untitled Tracks.
I track the music in the film & came up with a custom title for the corresponding tracks listed.
I rip the opening logo music & the alternate/end credits pt1. (which i believe is about a few seconds longer) if you want to add it here it is (http://www.4shared.com/file/PvAi2R3Y/DatingBlind_Add.html)
it's really not that much but just for added flare i do so anyway).

So if anyone wants to put some title into the tracks this could be of help :)

Here is FunnyML's original tracks with my custom title.
01. Blind Dating
02. I'm Handling Things Pretty Well
03. We'll Make Some Bucks
04. End Credits Pt2
05. It's Gotta Be A Real Date
06. Oh You Poor Man
07. My Bus Is Here
08. Can We Take A Walk?
09. ...I Love To Watch Movies
10. I've Had The Best Night I Ever Had
11. Danny, I've Got To Go
12. Just Be Honest With Me
13. What Do You Do, Exactly?
14. Are You Ready?

There are two tracks from the ghost in the shell tv series for the opening track - it changed through the series run. The first season openng credits track is on Ghost In The Shell - Stand Alone Complex - Vol I - track 11 - Inner Universe by 11 - Origa.
Season 2's opening sequence is on Vol II, it's track 2 also by Origa, caled Rise.
The end credits track is on Ghost In The Shell - Stand Alone Complex - Vol I - it's track 9 - Lithium Flower by Scott Matthew

Do you want both full volumes or just those specific tracks? I only have them at 160/192k

About Shore it's impossible not to associate him with David Cronenberg. Usually his music composed for the Cronenberg movies is dense, cold, disturbing, many times with unsettling sounds, and not exactly easy to listen. Some of those soundtracks were already suggested by a few of us, along with other soundtracks of non-Cronenberg movies, but with a somewhat similar style (e.g. Silence of the Lambs, The Cell).

Yet he is mostly recognized as the composer of the Lord of the Rings. I take for granted that you already heard those soundtracks.
But if you want to experience other scores that resemble the wider in scope orchestrations of The Lord of the Rings, then Soul of the Ultimate Nation, Looking for Richard and some moments of Panic Room, will do.

Ah, I see it now. I will say i came across this composer's web site just the other day. Now, to rip those files, it comes out as a FLV. Which I can convert. But the default coding for it is 320. But I highly doubt it is true 320, most of these samples vary between 128 and 192. Mostly 128. I did not know any of this a year ago, and my source had no info about it. But, now you know....:)

Your new? lol May 2010 is your join date.

You need a few more posts to enable your PM ability.

Yeah, I signed up a long time ago just to be able to see links. Only just now beginning to SEARCH the site and interact.

I'm slow.

BUT, now I've done enough posts to be able to send and receive PMs (heheheh)!

Friends please help me find this song from the video
Mortal Kombat 1995 - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5kiZjSnlwJM)

That wasn't on any official release of the soundtrack/score.
Unless there's a very rare leaked promo with that on there, I have not seen that anywhere.
I noticed it was missing from the official score release though.

Thanks in advance!

I have found one track for Flashpoint..it's called Jackson Redeemed off of Posner's site.

---------- Post added at 03:02 AM ---------- Previous post was at 02:57 AM ----------

Bhatia's site lists samples for Flashpoints, but I get error messages for every link on his site, even the biography stuff...I bookmarked it, maybe it will get fixed...

i'm looking for the TV OST for Escaflowne, and also the Movie OST....

There are 3 soundtrack volumes of the anime series and plus one more soundtrack called "For Lovers Only", consisted of previously released music, different track edits, and new unreleased music.
It's not as essential as Vol. 1 and 3 (Vol. 2 differs a little in style with all the 3 soundtracks as a whole), but "For Lovers Only" is still worth of listen, if only to hear the utterly beautiful 'The Story of Escaflowne' from the end credits, which wasn't released on the other albums.

There is also the movie soundtrack, which in general is similar to the music volumes of the series, including some of their co-composers like Hajime Mizoguchi, but with new themes only composed for the movie.
The only music from the series that were included in the movie were (as far as i remember), the 'Dance of Curse II' and the 'Epistle' of Vol. 3, that goes by the name of 'Black Escaflowne', in the movie soundtrack.

You can find every soundtrack release of Escaflowne, in the mega Yoko Kanno thread posted here: Thread 44707

I've identified the last two but am struggling with the first,

Does anyone have any info on /music from '30 minutes or less'? So far, I can't find out who scored it. IMDB says theodore shapiro did it, while there is a bunch of articles saying Nathan Barr did it. So, I'm not sure who the composer is-- but the music was amazing.

Edit: I watched the credits closely. They credit Ludwig Gransson as the composer.

Hey guys, if no one has said this earlier this morning, I'd like to be the first. This day marks one year since the original film score hunt thread was shut down. We've made it a whole year! Okay, so it took a few days for this new one to get started but I noticed the date, and just thought I'd point it out.

So congrats to everyone, and let's hope we can keep this thread going strong and not encounter large boulders falling on the road like all the threads concerning the Pirates 4 Demos have.
