Assuming that's aimed at me: interesting. You should let them know on the forum, someone might fix it.

Assuming the part where you said "Assuming that's aimed at me" was aimed at me (why did I just say that?), do you mean ask in a separate topic? I thought you couldn't do that? Which brings me to another question... exactly where do you request soundtracks, generally speaking? The "Video Game Music Discussion" subforum sounds the most reasonable place, but just to make sure, you know.

And incase you're not sure what I mean by full versions:
Columns- Clotho (Sega Genesis) - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=admQ2Ideh0M) -- the part from 1:28 to 2:02 roughly, is not on the VGZ/VGM rip.

EDIT: That's odd... somehow I already have an account there, but I don't remember registering... heh. I'm sure I'm not the only one who's had that, where you go to some forum you think you've never been to, yet somehow you registered in the past, in this case, I registered way back in January 2010 <_< but anyway, hopefully they'll be able to help (if not, again, there's the request boards here).

That APE file, how do I break it into separate files?
Cue files are for that.
The easiest way for me was always to use the foobar2000 (with Monkey's Audio Decoder plugin for APE files) :
foobar2000: Components Repository (http://www.foobar2000.org/components)
After installation add the APE plugin in 'components' folder, and simply open the cue file Foobar.

Or as other people would advise, CUETools would do the job as well.

Or as other people would advise, CUETools would do the job as well. The reason being that CueTools will then generate a valid cue file whereas foobar just converts the audio itself. If you intend to share it again later, use CueTools, if it's just for personal use then use whatever works.

Hey Milo, I just yesterday bought the Bastion soundtrack, even ordered the actual CD to come in September. While I love this site and what we do here, I feel it's more respectful to Darren Korb not to share it here, especially since it's cheap, readily available, and they're a small indie games producer who deserves our financial as well as fan support, so to speak. I'm not asking you to take it down, but it might be a good idea to consider it. It's not exactly rare and hard to find. Not trying to give you a hard time, I just feel it would be better not to oirate it. Plus, this forum can get in actual trouble for this one.

MiL
08-14-2011, 02:26 AM
@jlaidler : Ha, I knew the Bastion soundtrack was gonna be a problem since the size of its rar archive equaled to 666 mb.
Of course I don't have a problem taking it off the list out of respect to the composer, and plus this is his first VGM project it would be nice if people support his work by actually purchasing it (for a rather small price).

However, even though I'm not very well informed as to how do the game composers get paid, I think they receive the salary when the job is done, so if the sales of the album or the game itself are low - the one who suffers is the publishing companies, not the musicians.

jlaidler
08-14-2011, 03:04 AM
That is true, but since it is a domestic release, we still have to worry about the legal ramifications, since their lawyers can reach us. Also, the site the album is sold from is bandcamp.com, which is an independent sort of thing, where the artists directly sell to the public, hence the low prices. And since the actual team responsible for the game and the soundtrack is so small, I don't think it was a salary deal. Check out their website and have a look for yourself. And yeah, the game is released by Warner Brothers Games, so maybe the game is protected, but the album is not being sold through Warner Brothers. But regardless of all this, it's domestic and unlike the Japanese, these guys might just come after us. I do really appreciate you taking it down though. Better safe than sorry and all that. But if the site does go bye bye, and it's no longer available on CD or anything, then I'd personally load it here, if AI ever got the bandwidth, and?or the patience to put up with the slow upload speed.

Albanoid
08-14-2011, 03:27 AM
just leave it up. while I can see where jlaidler is coming from, unless Korb or someone else from Supergiant requests it not to be shared/taken down then there isn't need to pull it.

also, making the argument that the game is a domestic release isn't too strong. stuff like that certainly didn't stop people sharing the likes of the soundtracks for Braid, Super Meat Boy, etc.

jlaidler
08-14-2011, 03:44 AM
I still say it's wiser not to get on these guys' radar at all, and just play it safe. Might seem overly cautious to some, but I for one would like this site to stay around a long while longer.

Albanoid

just out of curiosity, as I happened to buy it (because I'd been looking to download it but forgot to check here first) but if I were to put it up, am I going to piss off the people who do moderate these forums? no offense jlaidler, I respect your view and all but if countless other material is up here without issue (except VS soundtracks and scores that is) then there's no reason Bastion shouldn't be either. unless you're secretly a member of Supergiant games and would rather no one share it - in which case I won't bother.

Well nobody is going to stop you from posting it. The only thing is that sometimes the smaller the label, the more they get annoyed at stuff being posted. For example, the Film Score Monthly deal that caused it to be against the rules for their music to be posted. The score is already widely available in mp3 on the forums and up on youtube so those who want it can always buy the lossless version. It is your choice if you want to post it though. Perhaps include a link to purchase in your post so everyone knows it is freely available.

jlaidler
08-14-2011, 06:03 AM
Ha ha, no, I'm not a member of Supergiantgames. But that would be kinda cool. I like Sirusjr's idea though, even if not many would be likely to actually buy it, link or no link. I just don't think the argument of not being able to afford it, especially at 10 bucks would hold much water. Like gamers pirating games to play them. They bought the damn equipment, so they can very well save the necessary amount to buy the games. This site however is different since most of these titles are long out of print and/or stupidly expensive to import here. I also think since the guys who sell the soundtrack not only let you listen to it in it's entirety on their site, and their downloads are completely DRM free, and you can download however many times and in which ever formats you like, that they deserve us giving them a break. It's practically free as it is. Now if they were charging around 25 to 30 a go, and had DRM up the arse, and limited formats, and no free streaming of the album, then by all means pirate away, arr. And yes, I do know we'd hardly make an impact with our little site, it would be nice to be better, or at least different to everyone else.

Albanoid
08-14-2011, 07:34 AM
actually, it's been my past experience with Bandcamp purchases that the download links do expire (for purchased material, at least - I guess it wouldn't matter for free or pay what you like releases since you can just generate new links on demand that way).

I can completely understand if someone were to be contacted by the people responsible asking it not be shared - but drawing a line when other similar material distributed in the same fashion is shared here seems strange to me. though it may not win me any praise in jlaidler's book (completely understandable), I wanted to make sure there wasn't going to be any rule breaking going on if I did post a link to it.

anyway - for those that would like it:

Yeah i can do that but most peeps want the track to loop 2 or 3 times so i do it like that :)

Well I asked for a Columns rip on Project 2612... seriously, that place is dead. I also made a topic in the requests forum here... someone said they'd try and do something... but I haven't got any thing since then.
Since this is the "lossless Video Game Soundtrack Thread", and I'm after a "Lossless Video Game Soundtrack", and since this place isn't as dead as the requests area.... I'd like to repeat my request.

Basically, a lossless version of this:

I'm glad to see that the Onimusha series is getting some love. Well, we have the OST to the first chapter, Samurai's Destiny, the Orchestra Album and Dawn of Dreams.... You force me to upload the "3: Demon Siege" one, that way we should get the main series 'losslessly' covered.... As far as I know the other releases are more of "collections/selections" albums.... And those who want them can go and edit .cue/tracks accordingly, IMHO, no point in dealing with lossless if you don't know how to work with such elements when in need :D Give me a week or two and you should see the 3rd chapter on your favourite community.... Still need to fix up some stuff in my new house. 'Later

Am I the only one here, that would try out a new soundtrack, just because of the album art?

Giving this one a shot, I am.

Thanks, MiLO!

You are certainly not alone, Mach Five. I, like you, am about to dive into this release based solely on the appeal of the album cover. It's not the first time i've found myself doing so, either.

Also; Thanks, MiLO! :-D

I propose that a new thread would be started for lossless rips so we can keep this one for official releases. Rules have to be stated being the most important that the uploader must be honest and say what source did he use, emulator, simulator, line in, "hardfile", that way the leechers can decide to download or not considering the source. At this thread there should be similar rules, in this case it would be original CD, bootleg, transcode (which obviously will not be allowed), downloaded ISO, borrowed rip, re-up with tags fixed, etc.

I think this is a very good idea. I'm all for it.

SPRING BREAK WOOOOOOOOOOOOH!!!!!!!!!

What exactly are these intriguing bonuses?
Utterly blissful score. I loved the game (and the first one, too) when I was young. Sooo many memories :-)

Thanks for the up, MiL!

I wouldn't mind doing one and running it but I don't want to step on any ones toes around here :)

I definately don't think you would be stepping on anyone's toes by spawning a unique thread. Especially given your highly apparent & keen enthusiasm you've shown in doing all those rips recently :-)
Frankly, if someone were to go through the entirety of this thread and catagorise every little bit of subject matter contained herein (of course, with the exception of "Lossless Video Game Soundtracks") into new, more appropriately designated threads, I'd say roughly 30-or-so new threads would be born!

Having said that, I think it's a fine idea, and with someone as committed as you to kick things off, it'll be a sure step towards a sexy new gamerip thread!

Big-Ups :-D

Oh my science. This- this is beautiful. Especially with the extensive Gyakuten Saiban listing, and most of Professor Layton present - although the soundtracks for the fourth and fifth games would be much appreciated.

Someone mentioned inactivity in the requests forum, so I hope no one minds if I make my own request here - the 33-track Psychonauts game rip would be nice to have in lossless format; the Galbadia Hotel files certainly aren't lossless. All other links found by searching point to the official soundtrack or the cinematic score, both of which I already have. Thanks in advance.

I don't own those CDs, but from the previous experience with Chinese bonus discs I would guess the extra content is nothing really special: usually they include several trailers for the game as well as wallpapers and/or desctop screensavers. And that's about it.

I already did it, I didnt know how complicated it was originally but thanks to Spark I now know. You kinda gave me a fuck you response with no actual information so what was I supposed to do. I redacted the stuff because it is outdated and pointless. If you want to insult me more PM me.

No, not even that applies. It was a simple advice, containing zero rude language.

He in turn responded with this (before the edit):

Because a guy who just found about about bloody APE knows how to do tech stuff with it. You could have just said there is no preexisting one rather than be a dick about it, so nevermind.

@N-10_Aden:
Sorry, but I think this speaks for itself. And if you don't know what transcoding means, you can just google it yourself in 10 seconds. Don't try to make it look like I offended you. If anything, you offended me first...

◆| DIGITAL DEVIL SAGA ~Avatar Tuner~ 1 & 2 Original Sound Track : Integral |◆Thanks a lot for DDS album. OH MY GOD! This is one of the most precious discoveries in this thread. I didn't know anything about this game, but after hearing its soundtrack, this album becomes one of my favorite. I recommend reading RPGFan's review for those who don't know about this album(Connary's review (http://www.rpgfan.com/soundtracks/digdevsaga1&2/index.html)). This review makes me smile, especially "WHOA MOMMY" part, and I feel the same with him.

You know, recently I got a copy of the official OST in FLAC (KDSD-00171 | Rockman 7: A Fated Confrontation! Original Soundtrack - VGMdb (http://vgmdb.net/album/4842)) and this time I actually sat down and more closely compared them with that spc rip. I was wrong. The OST sounds better. So much so I believe I removed that spc transcode from my collection.

Well, the only problem I came across with the official OST was that several songs had messed up looping and awkward sound effects scattered throughout the soundtrack.

Yeah I've seen people say that, but I guess I didn't listen to enough of it to catch any of it myself. I guess I'll find a list of what tracks have errors and do spc rips of just those (for the ones with bad looping errors, anyway.)

*EDIT*

The list put together on the vgmdb forum is:

-Opening Demo 1 (ALL the sound effects - electricity crackling and photo flashes; also fades out before the first loop is complete)
-Opening Demo 2 (Fades out just a little too early)
-Opening Stage (Last segment before loop and loop [first segment again] are both completely missing)
-Freezeman (Crackling sound - Enemy?)
-Wily Stage 2 (Part of the intro is missing)
-Wily Stage Boss (Opening/Release sound about 5 seconds in)
-Wily Final Form (Life meter fill ala X2 Zero)
-Forte's Theme (Teleport in sound ala Scissors Shrimper Stage)
-Message (Joyful) and Message (Sad) (Text and other sounds ala X3 Opening)

I'll do a spc transcode of these tracks again (or maybe just Demo 1, Opening Stage, Wily Stage 2, and the Messages).

Hm. What I downloaded is definitely not a FLAC rip of the official Rockman 7 OST. Because none of those errors are present. No wonder I didn't notice them.

The only error I've noticed so far is one missing track (the track the OST has marked as "Message (Sad)", which is the music used when looking at the wreckage of Light's Lab, if I remember correctly).

I had the spc files open in foo_gep, as well as the MP3 rip of the official OST from TMMN, and the mystery FLACs, all side by side comparing them. They each sound different. I guess this is a spc transcode that someone enhanced. Or maybe it's just with some other emulator. It's sounds better than a spc transcode from foo_gep, anyway.

Well, knowing how many errors were present in the official release, I would be more than interested in your flac rip of it. Knowing that all those errors were present in the official soundtrack was a huge let-down. :(

I've transcoded the Mega Man 7 spcs again. This time with SNESamp, for apparently I prefer the sound of it over foo_gep for this game. I may do the same for my Mega Man Soccer and MM&B transcodes, depending.

Well, the only problem I came across with the official OST (Rockman 7) was that several songs had messed up looping and awkward sound effects scattered throughout the soundtrack.

Capcom and Inti Creates did the OST's that way to preserve the original sound source, being unable to get a sound test option from the game or reprogram the roms to have a sound test, they had to make the recordings the best way possible that the games would allow. (Although I found a way to record music without SE but it can damage your SNES since it implies making a loose contact between the cartridge and the slot)

That's what I was talking about, emulators will never deliver the real sound, when an average person compares MP3's with CD's they will say the sound the same, but when someone with a better ear compares them, even without analyzers, they'll notice the difference, the same happens with emulated music.

BTW, I started my own thread for Lossless unofficial rips here (Thread 94767).
And for Lossless emulator rips (Thread 94775)

So what's the Onimusha 3 soundtrack like? The first was kinda meh for me, I'm not much into that traditional Japanese stuff with that one guy always going WOOO! as though someone goosed him in the bum. But the second game, the orchestral album, is fantastic. Listening to it now, and have been over and over for weeks. I'll actually buy the CD if I ever find it for a reasonable price somewhere. Is the third similar?

FIST OF THE NORTH STAR KEN'S RAGE

So what's the Onimusha 3 soundtrack like? The first was kinda meh for me, I'm not much into that traditional Japanese stuff with that one guy always going WOOO! as though someone goosed him in the bum. But the second game, the orchestral album, is fantastic. Listening to it now, and have been over and over for weeks. I'll actually buy the CD if I ever find it for a reasonable price somewhere. Is the third similar?
My opinion may be biased, but just for the opening track - performed by the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra - the album deserves to be purchased (good luck with finding a legit copy for sale, I can only come across the bootleg, now).... Pretty good listen, overall. No guys WOOOing there, just a bit of chorus in the first track and Dies irae in two themes... Rest is music.

I remember seeing a thread with the audio ripped in its original format on the forum, but nothing comes up with the search.... Oh, I'm afraid the audio files of that game are lossy-sourced.

RadChild

Because the source was lossy. The fact that the OST was on a CD or downloaded from steam is irrelevant. Already checked another source that was ripped from the CD. And so...Jesus weeped.

Hmm... Good to know, though it seems a bit overly priced to me, now. Well, glad I've got mine back then.

If some of you, by any chance, liked it... Consider to buy it.

EDIT (unrelated to the above):
Oh! Almost forgot, since I'm at it.... I didn't forget about your request, girl. You should get this next week: Bloody Roar 3 Sound Track (http://vgmdb.net/album/2737). Thanks for the art, I truly appreciate it.

Overpriced? Sry, but this is a limited edition and the release is out-of-print. Good luck finding this in the same condition on Japan Yahoo auctions for a lower price.

Either lucky or you purchased it some while ago, when it was still in-print. I've learned that Suleputer almost always only prints small batches and once these are sold, it's game over. The fact that some releases are only sold through e-Capcom doesn't make the situation better...

If it's really that much of a bother for you, the download from steam does have the soundtrack with it. If they come out with a collector's edition version in physical format with a soundtrack disc I will DEFINITELY buy it.

check the follow image..

acording to this... i cant understand why the ppl is saying that the mp3 lame VBR V0 obtain better results than the mp3 lame CBR 320.
Including this program that show the comparisson say that the CBR 320 quality is MEDIUM ?????

maybe someone can throw more light about this.

Gradius2

mp3 is mp3 and will always sucks!

About the "medium quality" isn't that from compression ratio and not "sound quality"?

You'll never get real sound quality with mp3 or ANY lossy codec out there.

Is it a wonder why ppl still talk about lossy-crap on a 100% LOSSLESS thread?!

The time you hear a trully High-End audio is the time when you figure WHY lossy sucks big time.

See the graph "Quality to File Size" in this article: http://wiki.hydrogenaudio.org/index.php?title=LAME
Efficiency of the codec is maxed out with the VBR V0 preset. If you're aiming for better efficiency than you have to switch to a more advanced coded (like Vorbis or AAC).

EDIT: It's not like a lossy codec converges to a lossless one if you just increase the bitrate it can use to encode. Limitations are elsewhere. Actually you can encode MP3s with a bitrate greater than 320kbit (e.g. 640kbit). The point is that even with double the filesize the improvement in perceived quality is negligible.

I loled hard at this.

This has nothing to do with frequency, but SOUND QUALITY! And can hear perfectly well the differences between mp3 and flac.

Now, enough of this off-topic.

Yeah. Because the people who say that are the ones who take VBR 364 days of the year and decide to try lossless on $10 headphones for 10 minutes. Then they are shocked when they "can't hear the difference" and proclaim anyone who can to be "full of shit"

To all you smug folk patting each other on the back I'd say: do a double blind test, a proper one, not "double click this FLAC, that sounds nice, now this MP3, ooh I can hear the difference". Actual double-blind.

Do it against 320kbps MP3. Guarantee most of you fail, even under ideal listening conditions, even with spectrally dense audio. A lot of statistics are out there to back this up, I'm not just speculating... but I'm also kind of tired of the debate. Continue the prickwaving, I guess.

Among all these annoying "lossless vs lossy" debates I'm only bugged about one thingthe "lossy" side of the topic seemingly only involving MP3.

I mean, after all these years of development of audio technology, we already have lots of superior choices (AAC, OGG, WMA etc), most of which could be as much widely supported as MP3. I personally don't find a reason to stick to such an obsolete format when transcoding from lossless audio into "lossy formats with better compression rates and reasonably high enough quality that I can put them into a phone or other portable devices for no-need-to-be-so-hifi-picky occasions".
