that's an interesting one. the transcodes I've seen thus far were completely cut off above 16k
EDIT: like this for example:
EDIT2: but that's because the first one was originally a VBR rip.
EDIT3: ^ wrong, it is indeed NOT a transcode. See my illustration here (

OK thanks very much.
I just verified this with another rip I got from another trusted source. This is indeed NOT a transcode. It looks similar to a transcode from a V0 source, but when you look closely on the spectral graph I posted earlier (1st graph) the upper "limit" is @ around 21-22khz. V0 rips begin to cut off @ around 20khz.

I'm sorry to seriously bother the hell out of you guys with this but... how good of a sound system do you really need, in order to tell the difference? Is it that easy to tell or is it more of an "OCD" thing to have the most crisp sounding music?
I'm only curious because I don't know if I should bother getting an mp3 player that supports FLAC or not, or if 320kb or WAV will suffice.

The following properties decreased the score:
* 'Defeat audio cache' should be yes. -5 points [5]
* Gaps not detected/appended to previous track, -20 points [25]
* This rip was not done using test and copy, -10 points [35]
OK, if you have consistent results when checking against AccurateRip, the rip should be OK (read: perfect). Otherwise, you obviously can't tell.
The "Gaps not detected/appended to previous track" isn't a problem at all. EAC does this automatically (detect gaps) when a noncompliant cue-sheet is created. And append to previous track is the default behavior anyway.

You don't bother us at all (at least not me). This is a perfectly valid question.
how good of a sound system do you really need, in order to tell the difference?
To take your examples:
If you have a 320kb encoded mp3 file and a FLAC file (both from the same source) ripped without errors, then most people could NEVER tell a difference! Even with good equipment. A good mp3 encode (LAME) starts transparency @ around 192k+. That means 99% of the people can't tell a difference between a 192k mp3 and the original CD or FLAC. If you read somewhere they can, most of the time it's placebo (especially with low equipment). That's why I take V2 as my main lossy encode. Anything higher is a waste, really. V0 is a waste as well as (and especially) 320!. I honestly could never tell an audible difference between V2 and FLAC (X-Fi + HD595, yes I know this is far from high-end. But it isn't that bad either).
Why to use Lossless at all then?
One word: Archiving.
There simply is no better way to archive music than in Lossless form, preferably ripped with tools like EAC, XLD or dbpoweramp in secure mode to achieve bitexact copies. Once you have the lossless rip on your drive, the CD can be put aside, you have a perfect copy of it on your drive. This is also the single one reason why I prefer 1:1 rips (log, cue + correct settings). For the archive! Perfect CD backups. Of course, one still gets the warmth feeling of having the best quality possible when listening to FLAC files ;>
Another big plus is conversion. You can convert to any format you desire from the lossless source with no harm at all. Ever tried converting an ogg to mp3? well it works, sure, but with a quality hit, that can and will often be audible. Why? Because you take additional data away from an already lossy file. A conversion from a FLAC file to an mp3 file is the same as if you'd ripped to mp3 from the original CD. Let's say you decide in the future that you want mp3, ogg or wma files for your portable device. Take your FLAC rip and convert to your desired format with you favorite tool. Voila!
So in short lossless audio codecs provide:
-the best quality possible (even if most of the time no audible difference)
-the best format to archive your Media
-the best source for any conversion you may want to do
-> maybe others but these are my top3
I'm only curious because I don't know if I should bother getting an mp3 player that supports FLAC or not, or if 320kb or WAV will suffice.
My opinion: Portable Player + FLAC? imbecile. I love FLAC, my library consists mainly of FLAC, but for my portable device, I want as much music as possible while still retaining quality. Result: VBR V2. The most efficient AND compatible lossy format out there.
...or if 320kb or WAV will suffice.
Please note that WAV here is another type of thing. WAV stores audio uncompressed. FLAC is a compressed audio format (like MP3). See it as a brother of zip or rar files. ZIP and FLAC compress (audio) data. The point is with FLAC as opposed to MP3, the original uncompressed data (WAV, CDDA) is reproducable bit-exactly. Much like when you are extracting a zip-archive.

I don't think anyone can tell a difference between a lossy 192kbps+ and flac when it come to an mp3 player (earbuds). So i wonder is it worth it going the trouble for getting your player to play losless. Personally, i'd do it just cause i'm too lazy to convert :p

Yeah, for me, lossless gives me the piece of mind that I have the best commercial version of the music possible, and that I get the original sound that was meant by the artist/composer.
I don't care that I can't hear EVERY difference between lossy and lossless, but I can't stand the fact that, with an MP3, I KNOW there's actual music and sound that is MISSING.
The spread of lossy formats like MP3 have degraded the fidelity of the audio industry (many artists are turning to lossy, digital publication only) and threatened the preservation of the history of music itself. You might think that a big claim, but just think about the situation right now, there are likely FAR more lossy encodes and files of our musical heritage out there as opposed to the real, original, untampered sound. Not only this, there are idiots out there that don't know any better, transcode a lossy song 6 times over just to re-up it again in that now-completely-raped, useless form.
THAT IS JUST.... WRONG.
Thankfully, hard drive space is getting much larger while still growing cheaper, so there is less and less strict appeal or need for MP3 or other lossy formats (although they still of course have tremendous appeal and accessibility for things like portable players).
As such, spectrum analysis of a lossless file is a thing of beauty to me: seeing that seeming infinite expanse of recorded SOUND. And during playback, I also love seeing the graphic equalizer roll up and down above the 16khz mark, like it's SUPPOSED to, content in knowing there's nothing missing or dead.

Well, he did specifically say a portable MP3 player with earbuds (generic earbuds I'm guessing), in this case he'd be right for the most part.
While we all love lossless here, I think it's fine to settle with VBR V0 for portable use (with casual earbuds), or even V2 if you are a little conservative with portable storage space.

He is not deaf... he is just not trained, many people want to defend the lossy formats because if you tell them that their big collection of songs is not "top quality". The fact is... even with a not so expensive (I mean... a 15 euro 2 speakers and 1 buffer config) system you can clearly hear that there are cutoff frequencies in lossy formats, but they can't distinguish it because they have just heard lossy formats always. Once you got a while listening to flac or ape lossless files and return to lossy... you note the lack of crisp and crystalline details in music...

I now have great ape rips of Persona 3 and FES, and am in the process of converting them to flac. On my Cowon portable player with my ATH-EM700ti's, I can instantly hear the difference between FLAC and mp3. One word: percussion. On an ipod in mp3, all I hear is bass. In lossless, the percussion sounds crisp and clean. It also has better directionality--I can hear when something is to my left or my right, when something is on the far left or far right.
You don't think you can hear the difference? Take your favorite CD (Yes, a real purchased disk) and play it in an audio system. Now rip an mp3 copy of it and burn it to an audio cd that will play in any cd player. Listen to that disk now. Tell me it sounds just as good.

Thanks for that article link.
Fitting I should read a Bob Dylan quote last night about how he hates how albums sound these days (even his own), only to see yet another Bob Dylan quote about the same thing in an article about the uncertain future of fidelity in our music.
Its scary. For all these new "technological" advances, we're going completely in the wrong direction.
And yes I agree also that albums are getting too loud, and noticeably "studio-enhanced" beyond acceptable belief. Back in the '60s the Beatles were complaining about the same thing about one of their albums -- too much studio magic drowning out the personal, human message of the work. So for Abbey Road they decided to go back to a more basic, seeming unrehearsed and less glorified sound. I wonder how much Paul McCartney despises the over used effects/filters and tuning and timing tricks used in the industry today. After all, no one's perfect, but if you listen to the new albums these days, the music wants to make you believe that it is. It's getting harder and harder to relate on a personal level to what you're hearing or experiencing during a song.
Thankfully, the good news is I think videogame music has largely sidestepped the "loudness" issue at least. All you have to listen to is Koji Kondo's works too see that: "quiet" gets just as much priority as "loud" where need be. Because VGM isn't played on radio stations, so it doesn't really have to compete for attention that way anyway. On the other hand, most game companies still widely compress their music files before putting them in the game. Hopefully this practice wanes as disc space rises.
Sirusjr
06-28-2010, 02:08 AM
I wouldn't say game music has avoided the loudness issue, just look at the recent release of Nier with horrible clipping in a number of the tracks, likely because of an attempt to sound epic. Even Blue Dragon has some clipping on tracks, as well as Distant Worlds 2, Magna Carta 2, Grandia Online, Final Fantasy XIII, Resonance of Fate, Xenoblade, sure they aren't all horrible and maybe not every track on the album is clipped but there is still some serious amount of loudness applied to most of these albums. Granted, most of the waveforms are on par with releases by Film Score Monthly or La La Land Records but some are as bad as Varese Sarabande and their clipping. Am I going to stop buying game soundtracks because some of them are clipped a little bit? Absolutely not. None of them are anywhere close to what you get with the latest pop/rock/metal albums so who is to complain.

Antraxx
06-28-2010, 02:22 AM
Yeah FFXIII was too loud in some spots, but had Uematsu been at the helm, I bet he would have balanced it more. He used to have such dynamic atmosphere in his soundtracks.
On the other hand, the loudness probably does better fit the chaotic futuristic world the characters find themselves in, than would Uematsu's sound. My problem with that album is, other than the main character themes, there's just too many "filler" tracks. Needless to say I found myself often hitting the "next" button on winamp to get to the good stuff.
I haven't played/listened to Blue Dragon past what was in the demo, and I know he composed that, but I can't comment on that one. I heard the Jap-faux-rock battle themes leave something to be desired however. I certainly grew annoyed with what I heard in the demo.

you can listen flac on zune?
No, and I mostly just use mp3s on the zune because I don't want to bother converting to WMA in order to use lossless. I only really use the zune when I am on the bus or in the car (outputting through auxiliary) or if I am at a place where I can't use the lossless audio on my computer. Listening to some music in mp3 is better than nothing and so I just work with that.
And Anteraxx and everyone else should listen to Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey soundtracks if you haven't. They are premium Uematsu and both wonderful. I haven't played the demo so I don't know what parts were annoying but it has a variety of styles.

Edit: There's also no information on whether or not the drive (HL-DT-STDVDRRW GSA-H30L) caches audio, on DAE Features. And the gaps... that's just a bummer. However, the CRCs seems to be totally fine even though the rip wasn't made with test & copy. I converted the FLAC files of another rip of Dracula Battle II to WAV and ran it through WAVCRC32 - It gives me the same CRCs that is in the log file.
The gap data is correctly referenced in the noncompliant cue-sheet that comes with these albums (again, EAC detects gaps when you create a noncompliant cue-sheet even if you don't do it yourself before the rip. The difference is just that the gap lengths aren't shown in the log). With some math, you can actually convert the INDEX 00 (gap start) entries in the cue to the actual length of the gap:
example for the track 3 pregap of "Dracula Battle II - Perfect Selection":
Track Length of track 2 (we need the length of track 2 here because "gaps are appended to previous track") = 03:34.45
Track 3 pregap start = INDEX 00 03:34:44
So we have a track length of 03:34.45 and the gap starts @ 03:34:44 and lasts until the end of the track. subtract the latter from the first and you have the gap length: 00:00:01 = 1 Frame.
The format is MM:SS:FF (minutes:seconds:frames)
The example above is easy to calculate. Let's look at another example where the fact that 1 frame = 1/75 second comes into play:
example for the track 8 pregap of "Motoi Sakuraba Live Concert - Star Ocean & Valkyrie Profile CD2"
Length of track 7 = 07:43:17
Track 8 pregap start = INDEX 00 07:38:47
Actual pregap length : 00:04:45
Odd, isn't it? Again, 1 frame = 1/75 second.
So to get from 07:38:47 to 07:43:17 we first go from 07:38:47 to 07:39:00. How much frames do we need? 28, because 75-47 = 28. From there it's easy again: 07:39:00 to 07:43:17 = 00:04:17. 00:04:17 + 00:00:28 (our 28 frames) is, voila, 00:04:45. The correct gap length.
-> INDEX 00 entries can never get higher than 74 for the frame part. So for instance 00:00:74 would be possible. but 00:00:75 would actually become 00:01:00.
Just wanted to clarify. So you now can calculate actual gap-lengths yourself.
:)

Woah, what a ghostly first post in the topic! (mine) First of all, thank you all very much for all the sharing. I love music and being able to get so much of it in one single topic in the quality that lets me appreciate it the most is something I'm really grateful for. Many thanks to everyone! Unfortunately I don't have discs of my own but I've been thinking of reuploading the ones I've downloaded just for the sake of contributing (though my internet makes it very hard to do so); I might had already uploaded one if only I wasn't worried that I might get complains because I tend to rename the track list so they all keep the same format or keep them as split files in the case of one single big track. Incidentally, would uploading my renamed and/or split files be prejudicial to the topic? If not, I might start mirroring the ones in this topic soon enough.
Erh, the point of my point, initially, was to state that the Zune can play Flac files, but I was confusing it with the Fuze, who becomes able to do so after updating it, so nevermind. I hadn't noticed how similar the names are until now; sorry for this, hahaha.
Well I'll still wait for an answer for the first part. See ya and thanks again to everyone here.

You might as well try the "m4a" format with either nero or itunes... there is improvement :)

Multiupload just uploads your file to a whole bunch of hosting sites. So it has upwards of seven other mirrors that link to the download. Megaupload is just one of these mirrors.

Physis is apparently coming tomorrow, so here's hoping. When I have both, I'll up the entire set of all 5 Remastered Rockman Zero tracks in FLAC on multiupload in a couple of rars.
For those of you wondering about Persona, some of you *coughZetto*cough wanted "proper" rips. Congratulations, I love you, so I'm getting them--they're in ape WITH cue files and FULL album scans and even include the original Persona 1 OST from the 90's.
EDIT: Here's the torrent link I'm getting them from:
http://www.nyaatorrents.org/?page=search&cat=33_0&filter=0&term=persona
If you absolutely can't wait for them all to be upped, go on the torrent--I'll seed for as long as I can. There's also an mkv rip of Persona Music Live(both shows) on there, but I prefer an audio rip to a video rip of a concert.

Grandia Original Soundtracks
Recently I became a (proud! *g*) owner of a original copy of the first Grandia OSTs, the one with the orchestrated tracks on disc 1 and the synthie stuff on the second one.
VGMdb link (
http://vgmdb.net/album/125)
Since this album is kinda rare, I figured I should share it here in lossless format. I created a bunch of mirrors, so hopefully these are going to last some time:
First some technical stuff...
Ripping application: Exact Audio Copy 0.99pb5
Proper extraction: yes
AccuRip: yes
Encoding style: lossless, splitted
Encoder: flake SVN r264
Metadata: VorbisComment (native FLAC tagging format)
ReplayGain: yes
Archival application: 7-Zip 4.65
Archive type: LZMA, encrypted
Scans: no (sorry, still no scanner available)
Warning:
Use recent (!) applications (not 6 years old) to handle these FLAC files. The encoding makes use of the VBS (variable block size) feature, which confuses old versions of the FLAC decoding library. Keep your software up to date and you're not going to have any problem.
The mirrors:
Since I noticed that links quickly get offline once you post them here, I'm not going to share the mirror list in public. Drop me a PM if you're interested in the rip.

GUWANGE Arrange Album + Original Sound Track
The first CAVE album in my VGM collection. I usually avoid CAVE albums like the plague, but the traditional japanese influences this album has are kinda nice. My favorite track from the arrange disc is the one by Michiko Naruke, it's simply awesome. I'm still hoping she comes back to the VGM scene to score some complete albums.
So anyway, let's start with the most important part:
VGMdb link (
http://vgmdb.net/album/17634)
CAVE albums are rare, and they're especially hard to find encoded in lossless. It was only logical to share it :)
Technical details are the same as for the Grandia album (and you should find a full scan set on VGMdb).
Warning:
Use recent (!) applications (not 6 years old) to handle these FLAC files. The encoding makes use of the VBS (variable block size) feature, which confuses old versions of the FLAC decoding library. Keep your software up to date and you're not going to have any problem.

I can agree with that. I took me AGES to find the OSTs for mushihimesama and espgaluda. Thats why I put them up here because it's a pain to download from japanese and chinese servers at times.

i think you are wrong. according to that (
http://www.accuraterip.com/driveoffsets.htm)database, the correct offset for your drive is +6.
I have never seen a drive actually having an offset off 0 (no offset at all).
When you are verifying with EAC, make sure you have AccurateRip enabled. This way you will get the correct offset.
You can even see this when you verify your rip against the AccurateRip database (e.g. with CUETools). The rip is only accurate, when an additional offset of +6 is applied to your rip.

The log sais:
Exact Audio Copy V0.99 prebeta 5 from 4. May 2009
EAC extraction logfile from 24. May 1995, 0:00
...
That's rather unlikely. That's the release date of the disc. Did you edit the log?
Lorem__Ipsum
06-30-2010, 06:06 AM
No, I actually ripped it in 1995. EAC wasn't out yet, but I didn't let that stop me.
To be more serious, that's something I started doing recently. I downloaded a file from someone who did that and liked it. I felt it made use of a rather useless field. Let's face it, if it was prebeta 5, it was ripped sometime since May 2009, and who really cares when. Inserting the release date makes it look cool at least. If you don't like it, that's fine, you're certainly welcome to change it to a date that looks realistic, or just download it somewhere else altogether.
YukariZX
06-30-2010, 06:35 AM
i've seen people do that. actually i've seen people completely remove some of those fields altogether. really, as long as the drive, offset, extract settings and CRCs are there, i really don't care. i mean sure you could edit those, but it would be ridiculously easy to tell if someone's horseshit at that point. so many tools exist to check legitimacy - EAC itself can process wavs and give peak levels, CRCs, and a spectral view. Cue tools can query accuraterip. etc. I've downloaded some whack files, like shit that said lame was used to encode mp3s, etc, but even those rips were legit lossless files and verified 100% with a spectral analysis and accuraterip.
P.S. Thanks for the rip bro, definitely legit, hopefully we see some more stuff from you.

Hello guys, i got a quick question:
Are spectrum analysers 100% safe & accurate ?
With other words, is there any way or possibility to fake a lossless transcode in a way analysers see it as lossless ?
When you do a spectral analysis yourself with programs like Adobe Audition (my preferred app), then you get 100% safe results, providing that you know how to interpret what you see.
This graph may help:

Kunyo

Thanks zetto.
I am just trying to understand how do you guys have so much faith in the analysers.
So, taking your example, anything around 20,000 Hz without blocks must be lossless, there's no cheating, no one on earth can fake it and make a transcoded mp3 looks this way ?
Zetto
07-02-2010, 09:07 PM
by saying:
then you get 100% safe results
I meant: You "see" the actual audio data. In that respect, these apps are faithful.
The key sentence in my post is:
providing that you know how to interpret what you see
Now that can be tricky at times. Please look at this also:
http://blowfish.be/eac/Spectral/spectral.html
http://audiohub.org/get/fa/sa.htm
In other words, there is not necessarily anything wrong with a CD rip that does not show audio data all the way up to 22 kHz per channel
Know what your source is (style of music, recording etc), take a look at the waveform and watch for suspicious things (e.g. cutoffs) and you should be good to go.

so on a lossless sharing page I go to, I saw some interesting requests, but i'm not sure how often requests are filled there so i'm going to mirror some of them here, since i'm interested in them too. I figure this way there's a higher chance of them getting filled (more people here since that's pretty much a private page). if you put some requests in on this page (you'll know who you are and what the page is), you might want to mirror them here as well, since some of those requests have been there forever.

if there were a difference in quality, it would defeat the purpose and one wouldn't be lossless. they're both lossless audio quality. ape is just compressed higher (meaning it takes up less space), but has less features and is slightly less compatible. if you want to save space, use ape, but if you don't care and want to use something slightly more supported, use flac.
please folks, don't start the ape vs flac shit, we're just so tired of it.

this is actually something i mentioned in my post at the top of the last page. this doesn't NECESSARILY mean it's a bad rip, it just means that the source wavs were converted to MP3 by EAC. if the original wav files were deleted and the lossy source was used, then it's a bad rip. however, there is an option not to delete the uncompressed wav files, so what probably happens with a lot of these rips is that these leftover wav files are what are used to create the lossless file(s) that are shared. you should always use a spectral analyzer to make sure things are lossless, but in this case you especially should, just to make sure.

Means nothing Because it's still using flac.exe to encode.
If it were "MP3" or similar, then it'd be bad, but as it's "User Defined Encoder" (commandline flac encode) it is fine.
The varying built-in bitrates are for other encoders, such as lame.

It's just out-of-print. Considering that Suleputer mostly prints small batches and that it was released in 2004 (6 yrs ago), it's nothing to wonder about.

Has anyone gotten their hands on lossless versions of recent soundtrack releases? The full Xenoblade OST, Nier, things like that? I've been holding out for word on those.
I suggest tora.to (
http://tora.to/) for finding a lot of lossless rips of video game and anime soundtracks. The speeds are slow, but just use FlashGet and it'll finish eventually. You can search for things using the English name, the Japanese name, or even the catalogue number. If you search Xenoblade there, the first result is an APE+CUE image rip. I downloaded it and it seems quality, so you might want to give it a shot.
I'll be getting this one soon, and fill the request on the page.
Is it some kind of private page?

Big quote for one sentence :D
Oh yeah, If anyone downloaded Yuzo Koshiro Best Collection Volume 2 (
http://forums.ffshrine.org/showpost.php?p=1415398&postcount=4419) and wondered about the cue files, they are actually for gaps that are appended to next track as opposed to previous. The Rip is perfect, just the cues are the wrong type.
I've created noncompliant cue-sheets (the right type for this rip) and uploaded them:
http://filesmelt.com/dl/YKBC2.zip
Thanks for updating them, I was just too lazy to re-create new ones lol

My Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance Soundtrack (

I'll tell you, though, I think my copy's still legit (To be more specific, when I popped in the disc and downloaded the info from VGMdb through EAC the tracklengths matched... Gotcha! Giving you an MP3 version is out of question, you'd lose even more "info" from a re-encoding... The tracks would be really REALLY shitty to listen to (I tried to do it, and I could tell the difference even with earbuds+built-in PC sound system).... Anyway, I'll let it upload tonight, hopefully the site's will not screw up.

Why the hell would a company release its official soundtrack from a lossy source? If it's on a disc, it should be lossless.
Makes no sense whatsoever, especially when such a great composer like Jeremy Soule is at the helm.
The only real exception is if the original game's soundtrack was compressed, and for some stupid reason the company no longer had access to the original lossless sound files prior to the transcode. One example is Konami's HORRIBLE release of the "Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow" soundtrack, seemingly sourced directly from the Gameboy Advance's awful speakers; fuzz everywhere, as well as random clipping. Even the GBA games prior to it, "Circle of the Moon" and "Harmony of Dissonance" sounded MUCH better audio wise on their respective soundtrack (they were part of a double release).
But Neverwinter Nights was on the PC, not nearly as big an excuse to have a lossy soundtrack. I realize lots of companies still do, tragically, compress their soundtrack to the game disc in a lossy format, not just to save space but to stream the data better.
Why aren't the companies responsible for the music in the first place saving those original audio files if they planned to release the soundtrack anyway. They are doing a disservice to their music itself, as well as the fans.

Why the hell would a company release its official soundtrack from a lossy source? If it's on a disc, it should be lossless.
That's why I love Sega CD Redbook Audio... You just put the game disc in the stereo and blast to the tunes... Too bad most of them could use a volume raise with Audacity. Oh, if it still worked that way...
Anyway, they can't be blamed for still releasing lossy/digital only stuff... Story proved them that most people can't tell the difference between lossless and lossy encodes of the same file... May it be for a not-so-good equipment, not-trained-ear, impaired-listening-ability.
I'm not one for lossless myself, and you can get the reason from my sign (obviously, the thing change when the album is Out of Print/Limited copies release), but I still understand why people wants it. Quite frankly, though, I get pretty pissed when people whine about CUE & LOG, for me is already a great thing to get something in "awesome" quality, I don't care if a thing has been ripped with wrong gaps settings (hell, we're always talkin about silence... Seconds of SILENCE).... If I'd want the original thing, I'd try to buy it.... That's just my opinion.
I mean, now most people trust more the value on a f*ckin' textlog file, than listening to the actual thing to see if it has flaws! You know? The drive of my laptop has, according to EAC, an offset of 117 (and I tried the AccuRip test 4-5 times).... Anyway, I've done little test on with a friend (which drive gives, as far as I know, the so-called perfect value of "6" as offset):
I grabbed my copy of the FINAL FANTASY VII OST and ripped it with my settings, then I lent it to him for another rip to compare.... Not a damn difference between the three! Not a single flaw! Neither my rip nor his differed from the original, sound-wise.
People should at least try to use their ears, as far as I'm concerned.

Wow, would be interesting to know where did you got that album since it's very rare.
We do not have much informations about it.. But since it's rumored to be an Intern release, it's probably just a CD-R and was certainly not factory pressed.
And that could explain why it does not use a lossless quality.
It was not intended to public, nor commercial usage.

All I could tell you, Myrkul, is that my stepfather brought it home to me as a Christmas gift years ago, along with a PlayStation 2 and a copy of the game. I don't know where he got it from, at the time I didn't bother about it.
Anyway, since you mentioned it was an Internet release on the Interplay's site... I guess is a safe bet that he asked one of his friends to download it and burn it for his VGFreak little boy.

Whoa! Whoa! Hold it. Don't run too far/too soon, guys. When did I say I was going to share publicly the thing? I can't recall that
And anyway, I'd bet you perfectionists won't be satisfied with the rip.. Separated FLAC files... that's it. Don't get me wrong, I've nothing against the presence of CUE/LOGS, if they can be added, but:
- If this CD was really made off downloaded files, it wouldn't have proper gaps, you wouldn't need to recreate a perfect copy since the ripped one isn't perfect, in the first place.
- Anyone with a bit of skills & patience could come up with hand-made stuff.
4th try..

The issues you're talking about are actually "manufacture" faults... Each disc have that skips/errors. The one you grabbed is a perfect rip, don't worry (read here if you need to confirm that (
http://vgmdb.net/forums/showthread.php?t=2677)). I suppose you can grab the original soundtrack and swap the tracks, if you want.

And anyway, I'd bet you perfectionists won't be satisfied with the rip.. Separated FLAC files... that's it.
Separate FLAC files are perfectly OK. I split each range rip into separate tracks with CUETools (noncompliant cue-sheet is created automatically). Range (single file) or separate files doesn't matter in terms of "perfection". Each can be a perfect 1:1 rip. Separate files are just more tagging friendly / convenient.
I'm not sure if I understand this correctly:
- If this CD was really made off downloaded files, it wouldn't have proper gaps, you wouldn't need to recreate a perfect copy since the ripped one isn't perfect, in the first place.
- Anyone with a bit of skills & patience could come up with hand-made stuff.
Considering the rarity of it I would snatch it even if it's not perfect or a transcode.
Thanks.

Hmmm.. I'll try to explain myself better... If my disc was burned with some lossy file from the site, like I fear thanks (:D) to Myrkul... Things like Cue/Log files (which some of you obsess over) wouldn't be needed. As far as I know, when something gets burned without a CUE the software automatically adds 2 seconds of silence at each track, now, if that was the case with this disc I suppose the gaps would be screwed.
It's going too slow.
Antraxx
07-04-2010, 01:13 PM
Programs like Nero give you the option to have gaps or not between a set of loose files.
If the tracks themselves contain the silence (or you desire crossfading between tracks), a gapless album would be warranted.
Zetto

I doubt anyone in this thread would burn this anyway, or at least not with "perfect copy" in mind.
EDIT: hey quick question. I'm in the process of multiuploading files to filesmelt right now. The first file just completed but the link doesn't appear in the "completed" section. Manually opening another browser window and navigating to
http://filesmelt.com/dl/%firstcompletedfile%.zip doesn't work, too. As if the file wasn't uploaded at all. Does anyone know if I have to wait till everything is completely upped for my links to appear? I have close to zero experience with this host.
Common problem with this host, sometimes it works (great), most time not,
that's filesmelt to you, Mister. ;) I have the same problems at the moment.
(And I was only missing one part for the complete bof box re-up, gah-)
Answer to the post, below me:
It isn't that bad, files are hosted for a long time, but you have to asume,
that at times, it won't give you useable files, so patience or alternatives
are the keywords here, that's why I usually use something else after the 1st/2nd attempt.
Second answer to the post, below me: ;)
Yeah, I thought something like that would be the case.
The only hosts I never experienced any kind of problems with uploads are:
MU, RS, Hotfile, shareyourfiles
I guess you can't go too wrong with multiupload,
but too limited (in files size) in my humble opinion.
Zetto

WTF, F*** YOU filesmelt. 2 1/2h completely wasted. Second file now too gone. (uploaded but not available). SHIT host. This ranks right next to mediafire for the worst filehoster out there. One corrupts files, the other eats your files completely. GREAT!
EDIT:
that's why I usually use something else after the 1st/2nd attempt
multiple attempts might be ok for you. But I need every kilobyte of my bandwith. When I free bandwith to upload files to filehosters I can't afford crappy hosters that are doing crap with my files, increasing the time I need to upload these files. Yes, as long as it works, filesmelt is nice. But the simple fact that you can't rely on the success of your up, makes this filehoster a complete fail for big files and bad-mediocre connections.
"hey I want to upload a ~500mb file with a mediocre connection, can you recommend me a hoster?"
"Are you a masochist? come and try filesmelt, the lottery filehosting service. You may win, but most time you loose."

We should do a test. Post yet another Megaupload link and tell everyone _NOT_ to download it. This way we can check if Megaupload removes stuff due to too many downloads in a short interval of time, or because someone reports the links. I've always wondered how it really is..Assuming Megaupload remove popular links (honestly I can't see the logic there, given that they're a filehost, but we'll go with it): you'll never know in the situation you describe whether people just downloaded it anyway.
I guess you could email Megaupload's support and ask them if they delete very active files, they'd probably give you a definitive answer.

@Nisto: Yeah, you're right. My bad.
You can give it a try, but fundamentally I don't understand why Megaupload would be deleting popular files. They're a file host - hosting popular files is what they're all about, it's good for business. It'd be like google refusing to index popular sites. Obviously they have bandwidth concerns, but deleting the files is basically anathema to their purpose, unless those files are infringing copyright and a complaint has been made. But hey, I've been wrong before ;)
Have you got any stats on how many times files listed here get downloaded?
Antraxx
07-04-2010, 08:54 PM
Hmmm... what if they're actually deleting INACTIVE files?
After all, the lossless community needs are still small since people are still so attached to MP3s. So maybe despite that we here are downloading them, it just isn't enough activity for them to want to keep it there. Maybe these sites are deleting our links because they DON'T get enough traffic.
Idunno.
On the other hand, if this chart (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_file_hosting_services) is right, I doubt any of our files that get deleted have been inactive for that long.
I agree: it would be good to figure out what's going on here.

Oh, yeah. Like the board anonymous visitors/reporters are going to listen to you. When you used your last method the MU links stayed alive a little longer than usual, so I guess it's a safe bet to think that by publishin' them here is like sayin' "Hey! And, before you even say that visitors can't see links, in fact there's a pretty easy way to view links even if you're not logged in: View the post on its dedicated page, like this... And the magic is done (

I'm sorry, but after the changes at rapidshare, I am starting to avoid uploading to them anymore. This new package thing going on sucks dick. I have an RS account with like 150k premium points and like 3,700 free points, and I used to be able to convert premium to free points, but can't anymore. Since my account hosts over 180 GB of data I am stuck using RapidBig, which charges me 78 rapids a day. I'm down to 222 Rapids, and when they run out I can't redeem my points for more rapids because they removed the ability to convert premium points to free points. Anyways short story is rapidshare blows.

I've never really used rapidshare to upload stuff.

filesmelt? the lottery filehosting service? the masochist's dream hoster?
Yes, as long as it works, filesmelt is nice. But the simple fact that you can't rely on the success of your up, makes this filehoster a complete fail for big files and bad-mediocre connections.

Well if this was a collector's account that you converted to a premium, you can still have it function as a collector's without using any rapids. The only difference and reason you would need rapids is if you wanted the files to last forever rather than being deleted when inactive.

EDIT: I'm slowly trying to complete my collection of Grandia soundtracks. I just ordered Grandia Original Soundtracks II and I'm probably going to share it here some time after it arrives (and I find time to rip it). Also ordered is the Dariusburst remix album which features a lot of famous VGM composers.

I have to agree with the negativism towards rapidshare. I can't even download files if I'm logged in...Says something about points and whatnot I'm just not interested in. Oh well... Hotfile isn't that bad, but like everyone else, I prefer megaupload. Too bad someone's reporting the links...
Edit: I think it's time I spread the word about MiPony (

I can't seem to get enough of the Wild Arms 1 soundtrack.
I heard Michiko Naruke derived alot of her themes from real westerns, which makes sense, but it also makes for one kickass soundtrack.
Been listening to Suikoden's ost also. Guess I'm in a Playstation-reminiscent mode right now :)

- CDJapan (my favorite)
- YesAsia (pays import tax)
- VGMWorld / CocoeBiz (Kahori-chan is the best!)
- Otaku (expensive, but has some rare stuff)
- HMV (good when searching for album that went OOP recently)
- champs-des-pins@eBay (has many albums where the normal shops have shipping restrictions, e.g. the eroge soundtracks by KEY sounds label)
- Otokichi Premium (for used albums)
- Play-Asia (only if everything else fails, prices are kinda expensive)
- Amazon Japan (plus the marketplace via middleman, the shipping costs are extreme though even when doing regular orders)

auctions.yahoo.co.jp (

Yeah, you can get pretty good deals if you're lucky. The biggest downside however is that most sellers only do domestic shipping. So if you're not so lucky to live in Japan then you have to use a middleman. And that's not always that cheap :(

Wrong. champs sells his good on eBay, and Otaku also lists some of the items on eBay. In fact I ordered my Amagami OSTs from a japanese seller on eBay, while no other onlineshop had it in store.
You just have to make sure that the store lists catalog numbers (+publisher) and that these are valid. And it doesn't hurt to ask the seller personally to verify this.

Well, that's entirely true of course. But I have yet to see a bootleg auction which has:
- the correct publisher listed
- the correct catalog number
- explicitly states that the album is _not_ a bootleg

True, they ship only in Japan and use a middle man. I ordered something off there once. You'll have to pay BOTH shipping from the seller to the middle man and then the middle man to the you. And or course it takes a long time for the stuff to arrive.

Requesting a re-upload

The greatest downpart for me are the shipping costs. I mean, paying nearly as much as a standart OST only for shipping is kind of wrong.
If you're desperate for a specific soundtrack, a favorite or something I could understand, but ordering every single OST from Japan is a kind of overblow or an expensive hobby. :p
I guess that's the most attractive point for digital releases. But I like the physical things about it, Artwork, Booklet, Sheets... I know, Buddha will never forgive me... j/k
So thanks for sharing the goods, I would never buy (about) 80% of the stuff here, but if I find something neat, I can't resist most of the time. ^^
(And for anyone who cares: Re-up of the complete BoF Box, Lunar TSS, and I added ICO Doujinshi Album "ICO Respect Arrange Album" in my old post (

And "Ganbare Goemon ~New Dance of the Momoyama Shogunate~ Original Game Soundtrack" was already re-up'ed here (1) (

Well, CDJapan and VGMWorld ship directly from Japan but I wouldn't say that their shipping rates are expensive.
On the other hand I wouldn't even know where to place domestic orders here for anything except western VGM/anime soundtrack releases. I know a few online shops, but their item prices are more than 2 times (sometimes 3 or 4 times) the price when ordering overseas - this kinda defeats the low shipping costs I have when doing domestic orders.
I guess that's the most attractive point for digital releases.
Call me oldschool, but I would never buy a digital release. If someday album releases are only distributed digitally I will stop collecting albums.
But I like the physical things about it, Artwork, Booklet, Sheets... I know, Buddha will never forgive me... j/k
I like haptics (touching albums, opening them, removing disc, putting them into the player, etc.). Having my albums neatly organized in a shelf is another thing:
I remember that when I was young I used to be able to exactly pinpoint my favorite vinyl albums in the rather large collection my parents had (which are now stored somewhere in the attic *g*). Even after my mother reorganized the collection I was still lightning-fast at finding Cliff Richard's "We Don't Talk Anymore", much to my mother's displeasure (she had to put the vinyl onto the record player, which I wasn't able to reach at this age).

I posted a while back about re-uploading Valkyrie Profile 2, is it still available on here? The link is currently dead.
Cheers and thanks to all.

Don't know about the others, but I'm not sure if NFS Most Wanted was ever released in lossless. IIRC when Nettwerk was still selling EA soundtracks in lossless, MW sadly was not one of them (or I'd have bought it for sure). Sorry.
All I know is there was a post in this thread with links for it, being as this is the lossless thread, I would assume it's lossless.

My thanks would be eternal! :)
EDIT: I forgot to mention that I like a lossless version of the soundtrack.

you need to post more, at least 10 posts, i think, before you are able to PM someone.
so start saying stuff like "thanks for that" "great up" etc

I lol'ed. I can't be on the forums 24/7, but now that you've got it I hope you're satisfied. ;)

Edit: Does anyone want me to post links for properly ripped Silent Hill albums? I've previously had rips that didn't defeat audio cache and used C2 pointers (and some other minor stuff). The ones I've snatched are SH2, 3, 4 and 4LE. All of them are Japanese, properly ripped and in image files.

New links for Tempest 2000, it's also a new rip (english log and tracks instead of german log and image). I'll reupload my other rips too, eventually - I'm just so damn lazy lately.
