As far as I have been able to find, this is the first FLAC rip to be had of this! I got this in the mail today and it sounds a good deal better than the old mp3 rip that has been circulating for ages. Enjoy.

Great thread guys

I believe it does have stickerbrush symphony, unless this is another rip that I have. If i'm right, it's just under it's alternative name, "Bramble Blast". On mine it's track 85.

Edit: I think Stickerbrush Symphony is the name of the actual song according to the OST, and Bramble Blast is the level it played in on DKC2. For some reason, in Smash Bros Brawl they named the song after the level rather than the actual song name, which is a bit confusing.

Sorry, anonym.to goes offline from time to time, and apparently Safelinking adds its prefix automatically :( Still, all eight parts are still stored on MediaFire. All i can really suggest is to try later.

I've actually been thinking about starting a private group here on the forum, that would help out in this situation and maybe help get others to start buying music. I had the ideas and stuff down, but i asked a few people what they thought and got a really mixed reaction, so made me think it wouldn't go down well.

"No emulator is perfect. No emulator ever really can be perfect for a system of this complexity. The concept doesnt even really exist, since every SNES behaves subtly different. What I mean by this, is that every single game ever officially sold has been tested, and zero bugs (of any severity level) are currently known. "

Care to pitch in and share? Its a way to contribute and ease the rest of us for a bit. If its in your reach, of course.
Otherwise everyone is going to wait on 'someone' which could take a f****** eternity :p

So i guess what i'm saying was, help someone in buying this particular soundtrack.

If you want to hear the full details of the idea i had, let me know. See if enough people are interested and maybe try it out.

Firstly, your introduction was misleading and incorrect. The quote you've submitted wasn't byuu talking about music rips (sound emulation) specifically - but rather the performance of the [BSNES] emulator in it's entirety. Those are different things.

Here byuu states and talks about "perfection" being intrinsically unattainable simple because no two units of hardware are perfectly alike to begin with. So for example: one cart OST rip from a beat up, 15 year old console in Brazil would produce a audibly different cart rip from a brand new console in Iceland. There is no such thing as "perfection" it's a flawed concept.

He's talking about emulation, and about how bsnes tries as hard as it can to be as accurate as possible, but it will NEVER be. There's a lot of variables involved in this, one of them being sound.
And, agreed, there's no such a thing as a perfect rip. But ripping from a emulator is just not what a real snes sounds, it's as someone who programmed a emulator thinks it sounds. The Super Nes is not a digital system, it's not supposed to be perfect, and that's the main difference when using a emulator to record music.

I promised myself I wouldn't get sucked into this awful argument, but I really need to know: what exactly are you verifying it against?

Also, taken out of context this whole debate could suggest to someone that emulation is in general more "accurate" (whatever that means) than a rip from a real system, and as someone who cares about hardware rips which are already as rare as hen's teeth, I feel obliged to clarify the situation. If you don't know for a fact that you have a good dump and a cycle-accurate playback core, then what you have is probably worthless; especially if it's M1, which is about as accurate as Ray Charles at a firing range.

Also, if anyone posts lossless emulator rips and doesn't explicitly state that they're from an emulator, they should be on trial for war crimes.

Anyway: less sperging, more lossless video game soundtracks.

Hardware. Bits.

Which revision of the Super Nintendo is "perfect," then? The analog recording you heard on an official soundtrack? Which revision is that? Was it a new console? Precisely how new?

What use is verifying it against hardware if hardware is as unreliable as you've implied here?

@marvinmc, @SmartOne and anyone else involved:

Do you really need to continue this pointless and endless argument about emulated music? That's not what this thread is about and it's really clogging up the pages. This thread is about uploading lossless OSTs, not about making personal attacks and insults based on people's opinions on emulated music.

I think we can all agree that order of preference for game soundtracks are OSTs, then emulated, the gamerips. If a game does not have an OST, then it is acceptable to upload a gamerip. As far as emulated music goes, this can be easily downloaded in small files from other sites and databases and does not need to be uploaded here, nor does its "accuracy" need to be discussed.

Hopefully we can end this argument here and use this thread for its actual purpose. If you wish to continue discussing emulated music then it is easy enough to create a separate thread. I'm sure that I'm not the only one who finds this repetitive argument annoying and irrelevant.

About your problem, guys... I'm sorry you're encountering it. I could tell you I've used 7-Zip 9.20 to create the archives... And i've tested the downloaded ones from MediaFire prior to posting them. Treat them as RAR Multi-part archives, get them all in the same folder and extract from "*.001". There should be no need to merge them, they weren't splitted with HJSplit and the likes to begin with, it has all been 7-Zip's work.

Well, aside from it getting a little hostile at times, I rather enjoy reading through such discussions. :) And if it weren't in this thread I probably wouldn't see it, since this thread is only one I care to check. And if we make a separate thread for these discussions, no one would see it and it would be dead, buried, and forgotten in a short time, and they'll just come back here to talk about it anyway. Just seems kind of pointless. I don't see a problem of having a handful of posts of people going back and forth every now and then. Much more annoying and cluttering things happen all the time (like people needlessly quoting HUUUGE posts/pictures).

If any users here are interested in Mars Matrix / Giga Wing 2 Original Soundtrack [CPCA-1050~1] (http://vgmdb.net/album/2495) they can get it here (Thread 110956) (Split FLAC)

I'm not posting it here because CUE/LOG are absent... Primarily, I'm just fulfilling a request for strawman with this. Missing log/cue wasn't an issue for him. For those that don't mind this short coming also - Enjoy!

What use is verifying it against hardware if hardware is as unreliable as you've implied here?

@Leon Scott Kennedy - nice to see the Wild Arms series getting some love here. I was actually going to start posting them soon too. These are the ones I can help post (that aren't here already):

WILD ARMS the 4th Detonator ORIGINAL SCORE (http://vgmdb.net/album/1070)
WILD ARMS the Vth Vanguard Original Score Vol.1 (http://vgmdb.net/album/4222)
WILD ARMS Alter code:F ORIGINAL SCORE (http://vgmdb.net/album/1068)
WILD ARMS XF ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK (http://vgmdb.net/album/4548)
WILD ARMS Music the Best -feeling wind- (http://vgmdb.net/album/1117)
alone the world WILD ARMS Vocal Collection (http://vgmdb.net/album/1071)

My upload speed is terrible - so if you were intending on posting any (or all) of these, please feel free to post away. It'll be weeks before I can get them up. (I've just recommenced full-time study again - so I'm fairly busy atm. But will do my best)

I like your idea neiax. :D
The WILD ARMS the 4th Detonator ORIGINAL SCORE is already uploaded by Jessie (use the search) I tell you guys to save upload time
Would be great if you or someone can upload the others too.
Also this one is need to have a most complete collection KICA-1416 | WILD ARMS Music the Best -rocking heart- (http://vgmdb.net/album/1097)

Likely a temporary issue on the server's side. Try later.

EDIT:
Ok, the download was extremely slow for me (30~50 kB/s), but it completed. Here's a mirror (http://www.fileserve.com/file/6wnu68B).

I've been looking for Lumines for a long time and haven't been able to find it. I've sent a few PM's to the original uploader and didn't get a single reply. It's been requested here before as well - with no response. The chances of seeing it are very slim.

I need help please. The Lost Odyssey soundtrack is what I'm trying to get and I thank you so much for putting it up here in lossless format. However I downloaded "Part 1" and whenever I enter in the password I get an "error" message for Track 16. And so far thats the only track that I've seen it occur with.

Is there a problem with the file? And if so how can we fix it? Also I'm guessing Parts 2-5 are the rest of the album? Tracks 17-33 of CD1 and 1-23 of CD2?

And if its not too much trouble could answer my main question about what to AFTER I've downloaded and saved all 5 rar files? Do I need to combine them into 1 file. Or do I highlight all 5 separate files and extract them all at once using WinRAR or 7Zip?

Lastly will VBR V0 (still don't know for sure whether it was a zero or an O but it really doesn't matter to me at this point) result in files with different bitrates? I mean if my end goal is to have 320kbps files VBR V0 isn't going to lead to that right? So its not really "better". Its just better depending on what you want to accomplish right?

1) I don't normaly import Soundtracks, (or anything) and usually buy whatever i can get in here (Symphonic fantasys, ANNO 2070, or stuff via amazon and ebay that already is in my coundtry), but i maybe wanted to start importing some Soundtrack and wanted to know which sites some of you would recomment (I once imported something from Playasia, but it didn't went well).

Or do I highlight all 5 separate files and extract them all at once using WinRAR or 7Zip?You could figure this out for yourself, but whatever: extract from the first archive of the set. Usually "(insert filename here).rar".

Lastly will VBR V0 (still don't know for sure whether it was a zero or an O but it really doesn't matter to me at this point) result in files with different bitrates?VBR means Variable BitRate, so yes. The bitrate will vary.

I mean if my end goal is to have 320kbps files VBR V0 isn't going to lead to that right? So its not really "better". Its just better depending on what you want to accomplish right?Mostly when people choose a bitrate to encode to they're interested in fidelity, the bitrate is only a means to that end. VBR-encoded files are more efficient, hence better.

I like when people spout completely vague nonsense out without any type of clarification and then heap insults on people for not understand their half useless response. That's not what happened, and being rude in return gets you nowhere. Chill.

Thank you for taking the time to explain the extraction part.

As for the bitrate its whatever. I don't like VBR but thats just me. The CBR 320 tracks that I have sound very good to my ears and I like the fact that I know that all the songs in my library are in the same bitrate. Either 192, 256, or 320. And that guy was rude but I'm not gonna argue over it.

Why? V0 MP3s will sound just like 320kbps CBR ones, except they will have a smaller file size. Pretty much everything handles variable bitrate MP3s.

I don't like VBR but thats just me.That doesn't make sense; there's nothing to like or dislike. CBR is fine but audibly there's no reason to go with it if you're using a modern encoder.

If you watch the actual encoder window for lame, you can see exactly where it uses different bitrates, and yes it does use 320. You don't see actual average bitrates for entire files that high because 320 is never used for the entire file. This isn't bad, it's just a question of efficiency. Sure, a v0 file will never sound better than a 320 cbr file, but neither will the 320 sound better than the v0. The v0 will, however, always have a smaller file size.

As for the bitrate its whatever. I don't like VBR but thats just me.
That's nonsense. Apparantly you don't even know how bit allocation works in a lossy codec, so your decision whether you "like" CBR or VBR encoding is completly arbitrary. And no, that's not being high and mighty. That's stating the facts.

The CBR 320 tracks that I have sound very good to my ears
More nonsense. Sound good compared to what? Have you even ABXed them against the original source? Probably not.

You're also totally missing the point here. A lossy codec has certain limitations that come by design and chosen algorithm. Limitations that simply don't go away by further increasing bitrate. I already stated this multiple times, but the 320kbit/s per frame bitrate is not the highest setting one can achieve. Free form encodings with LAME can go up to 640kbps, so essentially doubling the CBR320 bitrate. The question is, does this get you any audible benefit? Because it doesn't, you don't get magically two times the quality of a CBR320 file with that.
People still think that "more helps more", because they've got no clue how the encoder works. Any yes, CBR encoding has its applications, but they're uninteresting in the context of a filesharing board.

Ripped from HA:

(1) CBR is useful for people who are concerned about maintaining maximum compatibility, especially with certain streaming applications and some hardware-based decoders that don't reliably support VBR.
(2) CBR is also useful for people who desire the ability to obtain accurate estimates of the bitrate or approximate duration of a file's decoded audio without scanning and partially decoding the entire file.

and I like the fact that I know that all the songs in my library are in the same bitrate. Either 192, 256, or 320.
Even more nonsense. Because this "quantization" of the bitrate in your collection gets you nothing. Also it must be terrible for you to have files with a lossless encoding in your collection. Because these are inherently VBR! *scary*

For those of you who have played Lost Odyssey is Track 13 from Disc 1 supposed to be "Gongora's Plot" instead of "Gangara's Plot"? There was no Gangara anywhere in the game as far as I remember....but there was an immortal Gongora....

And thanks to whomever uploaded this. I really appreciate it. Such an amazing game in every regard from the music to the characters to the story....do I just thumbs up the original post?

Don't take everything that's written on MF's FAQ for true... They also say they aren't allowing any more archives with passwords. They are outdated :P

Anyway, for what i remember it is possible. When a free user downloads a bigger archive off a Pro one, the latter should just see his/her extra bandwidth reduced.

Does anyone here know how to read/translate Japanese very well? I'm just wondering about this one track from Lost Odyssey that I want to make sure is correct

帰ってくる、きっと…(Piano Version)

When I put it into Google Translation I get "Come Back, Surely...(Piano Version)

But Wiki has it listed as, "A Return, Indeed...(Piano Version). So I was wondering if Google Translation was more accurate than the Wiki listing....

帰 ← this Kanji is pronounced "ki" and means "return" or plain verb form 帰る - pronounced "kaeru" which means "to return" linked [て = te] with the other verb here "くる" pronounced "kuru" = come (used as an auxiliary here) verbて+くる means = the action of the verb comes towards the location of the speaker (or current point in time).

きっと ← pronounced "kit-to" - this is an adverb expressing circumstance. Can mean: surely/certainly/without fail/indeed

Rarely do JPN to ENG sentences make much sense when translated - so it's really up to personal interpretation... which obviously will produce as many varied outcomes as there are people to translate them.

Now that you have the basic intended meaning of the sentence - it's up to you to make it coherently acceptable. :)

(leaning the Japanese language - night school.. if you're curious?)

EDIT: FFXAngelVanille - have just received your PM. I can unpack and expand on this (via PM) Sent reply.

Hey Neo_Chip, sorry to bump into your discussion, but it seems that your EAC is set in the Beginner's Mode, therefore not all option's are available to you.

2 ways to set it into Expert's Mode:

1st/short) EAC > EAC Options > Tools tab, [uncheck] activate beginner's mode, disable all advanced features.

2nd/long) EAC > Configuration Wizard > (select drive) > I prefer to have accurate results > (...testing...) > FLAC > I am an expert, let me use the full potential of EAC.

strawman
03-14-2012, 12:39 AM
Uncheck this option:

Main menu > EAC > EAC Options > Tools > Activate beginner mode

I could make a hilarious remark about beginner mode, but I'm sure someone else will do it for me.

(also, alt+printscreen to only screenshot the active window)

edit: beaten :(

Do volume normalizers effect audio quality and if not can anyone recommended a good on to use with winamp. I heard if you lower the volume on anything besides the speakers than it hurts output quality. Also is there any album or .spc' that contain music from snes' dragon quest/warrior IV?

Dragon Quest IV was only released for the NES, the other two, the remakes, were released for the PS and the DS.

According to Project Sora head Masahiro Sakurai at Twitter, the Kid Icarus Uprising Music Selection soundtrack has 25 songs, totaling over 60 minutes. The audio quality is higher than that of the game, noted Sakurai.

Quite arguably, volume normalizers would degrade audio quality by much more than software volume adjustment, which just throws away bits (reduces bit depth). If your hardware can do 24-bit output it's irrelevant though. It's also not an issue if your speakers aren't so sensitive and have the cranked up high enough that you may actually hear the digital noise floor--maybe this would really only be an issue for sensitive in-ear headphone styles.

The (more or less; I wouldn't be surprised if under the hood it was quite different) NES equivalent to SPC is NSF. I didn't check if this was complete, but DQ4 NSF rip is here:

OK i should get something like mp3gain? I usually crank up all the volume controls on my pc to the highest and leave them like that and only use the volume control on my speaker to adust. Im under the impression that this is the best way to do it. using mp3gain won't distort that right?
And if you liked that Nintendo album you should also download this one http://forums.ffshrine.org/f72/lossless-video-game-soundtrack-thread-links-first-64743/645.html#post1901019

I think for FLAC its called Replaygain (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ReplayGain), but I use it with XMplay and sometimes MusicBee for audio playback and it seems to do a good job of providing even level "sounding" audio for me. I've run into distortion and clipping with audio that's been recorded REALLY loud (Nintendo Sound Selection vol.2 Koopa <Loud Music> (http://vgmdb.net/album/2426) is an example). Once everything is calculated and tags are set then that I can typically I can do a set and forget with the computer volume and the speaker volume and it'll play the majority of my music without me having to change the volume.

It's not so hard to use something like Google Translate and just follow your nose. If some tracks are giving you a read headache though I'm sure many here would gladly help you out, if you ask nicely of course. I've many times had to modify cue lists myself just to get the damn album to play, instead of throwing my hands up and just deleting the darn thing before hearing it. And believe me, some get it in them to be REALLY stubborn about it.

It's free. You see the free part? Free, gratis, free of charge, you pay zero money to be a member and download this stuff. If the album and track titles aren't to your liking then who bloody cares? Someone say before if you install the download manager from that site the speed increase a lot.

That's true MP3tag and foobar can do that.No kidding. Copy paste the info from vgmdb to a text file, highlight the spaces and replace them with a delimiter character like "|", save the text file making sure each line represents the track title. Right click the album directory and open it with mp3tag. In mp3tag, highlight the tracks, select "text-file to tag" (ALT+4), point to the text file under filename, and use "%track%|%title%|%dummy%" under format string, select enter and you are done after a few seconds. There's an old saying about teaching a man to fish...or sumthin...

mp3tag can do the titles for you, with a few clicks. There is a little configuration changes you would have to make like using the vgmdb tracklist db or some shit like that. It can also rename the files too.

fb2k's masstagger has a function called "Input data (one line per track)", which you can use to quickly change track titles. I've got a short (and hacky) script that removes tracknumber and tracklength from the VGMdb tracklist output.

Keep in mind that it isn't unusual for track listings on VGMdb to contain spelling errors... and albums that have only been released in Japan that didn't receive an official translation, have often been translated by users there - so who knows what you can end up with. VGMdb isn't reliably accurate. (for those that care about correct lists)

23 posts since the topic of tagging came up, and not one of you has mentioned that VGMdb runs a freedb server (http://vgmdb.net/forums/showthread.php?t=2618)?

If people have seriously been manually machine translating hundreds of track names when there's a tool which will tag an entire CD with proper translations in three clicks, then it's small wonder they're so fucking angry.

Keep in mind that it isn't unusual for track listings on VGMdb to contain spelling errors... and albums that have only been released in Japan that didn't receive an official translation, have often been translated by users there - so who knows what you can end up with. VGMdb isn't reliably accurate. (for those that care about correct lists)Still, it is probably better than the Engrish output from google translate ;)

Just a reminder that collections on vgmdb is not intended to get lossless music / get in touch with someone that owns an album.
Also please hide your collections/albums you do not own physically.

At least we could always answer "No" or report the requesters :D I don't see the need to hide collections that are digital (after all, some releases ARE digital to begin with, or have a digital reprint XD), that is as long as the folder's name (again, as stated here (http://vgmdb.net/forums/showthread.php?t=4614)) is not a blatant advertise for rips trading, of course. EDIT: I mean, it's up to the collector if he/she wants to list pirated stuff on his/her collection.... Can any of us actually tell others what's pirated and what is not in their collections? Nope, ideally, you only have to "trust" the user... If i want to list my digital stuff and/or its format (something which i'm currently doing, as you can see), i'm totally entitled to do it.. Does it fuck up VGMdb's statistics? Sorry, i could not bring myself to give a damn, they're just numbers.

a needless effort on my part anyway since he's already stated what he has but still, i don't really get why the jump to include me in that as if i were advocating people contact your members for rips or something but instead worked within the confines of this thread based on publicly viewable info from a link provided.

You happen to be wrong. Different communities, different rules. In my previous post i've linked a thread found @ VGMdb, A Warning to File Traders (http://vgmdb.net/forums/showthread.php?t=4614), where the website's Staff basically say "you" aren't entitled to ask other members to share their collections on there, otherwise you risk ban/loss of account.... So, yeah, if some user doesn't like "you" showing up 'pestering' him for a rip, he/she's totally entitled to report you to the Staff and show you the "fuck off~bye bye way". (Sorry, i misunderstood and thought you meant VGMdb).

I meant reporting to VGMdb's staff those who go and request stuff there, but... mind this is my personal opinion... i do believe that what i said previously can apply here, too... when the same thing occurs: you could probably end up being reported and banned for the above attitude. Why? Because none of us is forced to share anything, and we might want to link our collections simply for the sake of "showing off" (something which to a bunch of you may seem a "douche/asshole way of doing things", but actually is not).. Get a bit too annoying and you might discover what happens here in such occasions, i guess :P

I hope this is clear, but to play safe: my "you" aren't directed at you.

@Albanoid: My message was more of a general reminder than a message directly targeted for you. I simply quoted for an example.

Just to be clear on the collection situation at vgmdb...
You are free to post your digital collection, but it is better to hide it. Why would you show it to everyone if it's not legally owned ? You can keep it for you, there's no harm done.
Also, we do not have any policy against digital collections. Though we do have a policy that ask user to not clearly mention it's illegally owned (like naming your folders "lossless" "flac no cue" etc..)

Hmmm... Like you said, there's no harm done, unless we're talking about the likes of idiots who go and name their folders #gamemp3s or MP3 - pirate4lyfe, etc...)... But i've thought of two possible reasons :D: 1) It is hard for someone else to prove the digital stuff is indeed pirated, with all the digital stores that are scattered on the Web. 2) This could be related to the previous point.. and it isn't "totally" right... obviously... but the user might have actually owned the physical release at some time, who are we to say that his/her digital copy isn't actually his/her own encode?

In the end, a great deal is about trust.... For the users to not do such stupid/unsolicited~rude things... and to not lie... Although about this last point, no one has the right to accuse others of lying... or to request "proves" that demonstrate they're stating the truth... You really just have to rely on the word.

fwiw, i get why you have those rules and i respect them within the confines of your site (as i hope others do as well). in this particular instance it was less clear on what was actually owned and what ended up coming to light wasn't exactly following the terms you outline there so i suppose it's all for the best.

But i've thought of two possible reasons :D: 1) It is hard for someone else to prove the digital stuff is indeed pirated, with all the digital stores that are scattered on the Web.it would be next to impossible for this. i've actually taken to listing all of my purchases off Amazon in my collection there and so far feel lucky that no staff has ever contacted me saying "uh, did you actually buy these yourself?" just so i don't have to do something like dig out digital receipts for the lot of it.

Have any of you guys been having 'issues' uploading to Mediafire recently?

I've been trying to upload a few files for here, but keep getting an error message, 6-10% into the upload. Something about the file 'could not be verified' - this always happens after the file has been uploaded (not during)... I'm guessing there might be some site-maintenance going on (which could be causing a few bugs) - this has been going on for a few days now though. Strange.

EDIT: Just for reassurance, here's a spectral comparison of the same track in FLAC and Apple Lossless.

http://i.imgur.com/lKLHD.pnghard to be reassured with that program given this -

I've locked the thread pending an update to the software by alexkay. At this time, Spek is not recommended for spectral analysis. Please stay tuned...

Edit: To further clarify, as my original post sounded more negative than necessary, Spek's current settings result in both false positive and false negative transcode conclusions in certain limited cases. Casual users need not worry too much, but do be aware that as of now Spek is not as conclusive as Audition, for example, and bear this in mind when making reports or transcode determinations on your personal library. It is my understanding that this is both a simple fix and currently in progress.and that the guy programming it has yet to update it in nearly a year come next month.

As you can see, they are identical, so the quality is the same. Just something I wanted to make clear in case you're worried :p
Nonsense. Just because two spectors match, doesn't mean the input data matches.

So replay gain won't change audio quality? My question basically boils down to this. If I lower the volume knob in winamp will it affect sound quality?
