aiming to break your own record for asking for a soundtrack? i know i know, you waited a whole 5 hours!

I asked if anyone has it. What did I get? Booo!

I asked again. What did I get? "OMG ur tryng 2 bet ur rekerd trolololol"

I'll ask again. DO ANY OF YOU TROLLS HAVE THE SUPER DONKEY KONG 2 ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK?

I'll continue asking, until someone who isn't a retard, actually gives me a proper answer, and preferably someone who DOES have it, maybe uploads it.

Geez, man. Take this as you wish, but if you keep asking for something the way you've been - and still seem to be - doing, you're the one to act like a retard. Now, before you go and report me, take the time to read the whole post:

Nobody's bothering to answer you? There's a chance nobody here actually has what you're searching for.

I mean, what would be the point of giving an answer like "Sorry, don't have it", other than absurd politeness? As stated above, if you're not getting anything, you should come to the conclusion that they don't have the "thing". Sure, there are those like me who may fulfil a few lossless rare requests which popped up around here, and simply decide to not do it because... well... they don't want to, but still... It's the former, usually. They ignore requests they can't fulfil.

Just saying, if you don't have it, just say "I don't have it", posting "Boo" or "OMG u make records?" is not the same thing.

If and when anyone DOES have that particular soundtrack however, PSCN-5049, can you upload it? (Yes, this might count as the fourth time in less than 12 hours, but it's not exactly the same, it's asking when it is available, not if it is available, and if =/= when so whatever).

Also, on the other hand, going in the opposite direction.... does anyone want any of the following European soundtracks?

If you want something, requesting in a classy nice fashion is far better than demanding.

Ah, I see. Well, that's unfortunate especially since it was a simple log file, but if it required a complete re-rip of the soundtrack and a lot of extra work, I think I would have just explained it as he did. But everyone has their reasons for doing what they do I suppose.

He's not being selfish.

I think it is. Traders only give something when they get material back, with often horrible disproportion like in the example neiax was speaking of (http://forums.ffshrine.org/f72/rom-cassette-disc-sunsoft-remix-cdcd-10005-a-117743/#post2030240). This pretty much defines selfish for me.

You're an idiot for realizing that nothing comes free in life.

There's enough people in this thread & forum who give stuff for free. And those are what make it what it is, those are the heart of it. That stuff comes free, for the downloader. I agree that people shouldn't take free stuff for granted though, there are always human beings putting effort in stuff behind that.

He's living in the real world

If that's the real world ("give me this or you won't get that"), then: I am in a world of shit - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xnTU4dKpoB8)

... But you're asking for me to do a very specific thing.

Jodo, this "very specific thing" would cost maybe 20mins of your life, time that pretty much everyone sharing in this thread does invest himself, for others, for the community. In neiax's example you were asking for some of the rarest vgm albums in existence, worth several hundreds of dollars in return for maybe 20mins of your life. This is more than just disproportional. I've just bought this (http://vgmdb.net/album/21525), an album easily equaling the ones you requested in that example in rarity. You know what? I'll post it openly for everyone, just like I did before. I get no material in return, instead I invest more time myself. Why can't you traders be a little more like that? You have that link of your collection in your sig. What's its purpose? With that behaviour its only purpose feels like showing off: "Hey I have all these, but hihihi you won't get any of these unless I get the rarest shit I don't have yet in return". Now I see you've started contributing and that's cool. But again, dude, when someone asks for a simple log/cue rip (a standard in this forum), answering with requests of albums worth hundreds of dollars is way out of proportion. Oh and please don't read this as a hate-post, I don't want to bash anyone. I just felt things needed to be put in perspective.

What's so difficult @ just being nice? What's so difficult @ investing time & effort for others?

Let's make love, not war. *wink*

Zetto, you bring up good points, or well... stuff to think about (please, forgive me if I can't manage to express myself properly), but there's another perspective which ultimately crush your "speech":

There is not an universally recognized way to share stuff illegally... I mean, there's really not a proper or wrong way to do it. You may find yourself in the position to offer something, and given that you're the one which ends up investing personal time to rip/upload/etc... You're absolutely entitled to throw in some 'conditions', if you want, the choice is ultimately up to "you".
That user would like to receive something back for a more accurate rip? There's really anything wrong with that, after all, the decision to share+how to share is up to the individual.... Let's not forget that this very same guy/girl (as well as the others) may potentially face stuff like legal problems, account terminations by uploading copyrighted material... So, yeah, already got quite the load of "pressure" [As for being selfish... That's up to debate]. You don't want to play his/her little game? Again, nothing wrong with that.

Having problems with folks approaching the "sharing-underworld" in their own way?

Please point to the so called post I "neglected", O Great, Albanoid!

Neglected =/= missed. I might have missed the post, but I never intentionally neglected it, so I'm not exactly being selfish!

Do you know why I don't upload much, or nothing at all, pretty much?

Let me spell it out for you.

I... DO... NOT.... HAVE.... ANYTHING.... TO.... UPLOAD....

Do you know WHY I asked more than twice for that Super Donkey Kong 2 soundtrack? Because being the type you are, instead of simply asking, you decided to just "Boooooooooooooooooooooo", and then troll about how I'm "trying to beat my record".

Let me just reiterate a point...

I DON'T HAVE ANYTHING TO UPLOAD THAT ISN'T ALREADY AVAILABLE OR WORTH UPLOADING, OR THAT ANYONE SEEMS TO WANT!

I've told you the only 3 albums I have, but not one of you even BOTHERS to respond, so I assume you don't WANT them. (Anyway, they have fingerprints and probably won't work perfectly anyway).

realistically it is, isn't it? otherwise money and the concept of buying and selling would not exist. but in this context i see what you're driving at.

I was obviously referring to the music sharing scene and not the system that society is built on.

... but there's another perspective which ultimately crush your "speech":
Sure about that? I think if anything, then your speech "crushes" itself since it feels a bit out of place in a thread where there indeed exists a "universally recognized way to share stuff illegally", which is: Just share your stuff, preferably in a specific way. This is not a trader's den.

Anyway:

I mean, there's really not a proper or wrong way to do it.

There is a way where the most important thing is oneself: "I'm only nice to you when you feed me"; the Incoming stream is the only topic of interest. Everything else is subordinate to it. Other people? Human interaction? Manners? Honour? In the extreme cases these people don't value anything of that. Then there's the opposite: The Outgoing stream is strong. In extreme cases even more than the Incoming. These people care about others, sometimes more than about themselves, they don't mind to sacrifice time solely for the good of other people.

Universally proper? Of course not. This by definition isn't possible. Whether something is wrong or not depends on the person judging about it. Since I'm a sharing guy, that behavior feels "wrong" in the sense that I don't like it.

Let's draw a line: Left end the extreme trader, right end the extreme sharer. I think most of the contributors in this thread would mark themselves on the right side of this line = I'd consider my reaction as absolutely natural in the context where I've written it.

You may find yourself in the position to offer something, and given that you're the one which ends up investing personal time to rip/upload/etc... You're absolutely entitled to throw in some 'conditions', if you want, the choice is ultimately up to "you".
Of course. But for what it's worth, I think that needs to be done in a sane manner. When conditions are "throw in" like in that particular example, in a place where most people share their stuff openly following an accepted standard, don't you think that those conditions can't be expected to be embraced?

the decision to share+how to share is up to the individual....
see above.

Let's not forget that this very same guy/girl (as well as the others) may potentially face stuff like legal problems, account terminations by uploading copyrighted material... So, yeah, already got quite the load of "pressure"
I can hardly believe that you bring this up, but: Irrelevant, because he already shared stuff openly; so that is of no concern to him.

Having problems with folks approaching the "sharing-underworld" in their own way?
Generally: No. In a way like presented here? Yes.

I listen to VGM, but I also listen to non-VGM.

If I'm honest, the type of music I really can't stand is anything to do with the word "Metal".

You call it "Metal", you might call it "Music", those who like it, however, to me it's "Screaming out of tune, smashing guitars and making a complete racket".

Remember, people are entitled to their opinions. You can like whatever you want, but in my opinion, I can't stand this:
Let the bodies hit the floor, let the bodies hit the floor, let the bodies hit the floor, let the bodies hit the.... FLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOR!!!

Precisely (that's at Neo Chip, not Albanoid)

Now... what are the chances of Nintendo getting off their lazy pixelated backsides, and actually making a soundtrack for Mario Kart 7, or Super Mario 3D Land, or maybe New Super Mario Bros 2, or New Super Mario Bros U?

IMO, there's technically, VERY rarely any Mario soundtracks. I'm still confused as to why SM64, SMG, and SMG2 got soundtracks but not SMS.

There is an obscure official soundtrack of Super Mario Sunshine. It was released on an issue of Nintendo Dream of the Mario 20th Anniversary CD. Kinda thinking of buying it.

Yeah, I know. But that was only 8 tracks, and it was basically a compilation of tracks from Super Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels, Super Mario Bros 2, Super Mario Bros 3, Super Mario World, Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine, which had more tracks than the 25th anniversary (the worst soundtrack Nintendo has ever made.... 25 minutes of music, of which about 5 minutes is sound effects... a waste).

However I was talking about a full OST, including cutscene music :P

I have Super Mario Sound Collection Happy! Mario 20th Super Mario Bros (http://vgmdb.net/album/1890) in lossless. I found it a long time ago on some random Asian site (can't remember which one) and it was in split APE files without cue/log. I took the liberty of converting the files to flac via FB2K and tagging it to my preferences.

To my knowledge it's lossless, however for some reason some of the tracks from SM Sunshine are a little dubious when run through a spectrum analyser (I dump the WAV's in my DAW [Ableton/Ozone5] and verify there) but the track: 'staff roll' for instance, is fine... it seems legit to me.

They certainly don't look like any rips of the game I've encountered - who knows? I can upload it if any of you guys are interested? Just let me know.

Sirusjr
07-06-2012, 05:13 AM
Well the worst that can happen is some user can check it out and discover it is not true lossless. OTOH it could very well be authentic and make many people happy so I say post away. Mentioning you are unsure of the validity of your post will prompt some people to check it out for you :)

IMO, there's technically, VERY rarely any Mario soundtracks. I'm still confused as to why SM64, SMG, and SMG2 got soundtracks but not SMS.

Nintendo seems not to be very interested in releasing full soundtracks of their games, they only release those Super Mario Club exclusives that are most of the times samplers. Mario Bros., SMB, SMB 2, SMB3, SMB USA, SMB Land and SMW all have full soundtracks. A lot of people would agree that one of the main reasons for not releasing an SMS soundtrack is due to it's reception.

Not being %100 sure if it is indeed lossless - of course, have held back from posting it on this thread. For those that still want it (or just want to help with identifying if it's genuine lossless) please be my guest. I'm not really restricted when it comes to storage so just decided to keep it.

I'd actually like to hear some feedback on it (if people have the time) - I just did a comparable test with another release.
The Super Mario 64 tracks in this album compared with tracks from Super Mario 64 Original Soundtrack [PCCG-00357] which I know to be lossless. The interesting thing is these clearly have different mastering when compared, but do appear to lossless... tell me what you think, guys.

If someone doesn't like your avatar, they should install adblock plus and block that image. I've done that a few times with some strange avatars but I never got all bitchy about it to them personally. As long as it isn't against the rules I don't care what avatars people want to use.

That baby picture is almost as creepy as your avatar though.

Guys, just gonna say this one last time, any more trolling or insulting will get this thread closed for a period of time that i feel will cool things down. This has been done before in the past on other threads, so i have no problem doing it again.
While it is certainly your perogative, wouldn't it be fairer to just toss the offendending parties out on their asses for awhile?

Unbelievable comment, isn't it? This thread is infested with termites. I'm sure there are a stack of users that sit in the background, leeching and can't even be bothered to do simple things like re-up downed soundtracks they've taken from here when requested by other users (especially those who routinely contribute). They make my blood boil. No sense of class.

It does hurt their reputation, we all see it. It just doesn't lead to anything good if we point out their lack of participation. You can't make someone to want to contribute if they don't want to. Just like you can't help to someone who doesn't want to be helped.

The way it works at FFshrine is - Want to contribute? Great. Don't want to contribute? Great.
Love it or leave it. That's the way things roll here. This is not Astost and maybe that's a good thing.

You dont have to.
But if you dont do, then shut up and stay quiet in the back, and let those who do in peace.

Coming out once in a while and call for a re-up or a ban is a punch in the face.
And i dont mean WhoBeDaPlaya personally (he just was here now). There are even worse.

Well I did contribute that 1 time......or 2. Or 4. Truth is I don't download most of the stuff here, that being so, I can't even provide a reupload. And even if I went searching for things to share, chances are you guys beat me to it 5 months back. I don't do Astost, I barely do rutracker. I don't order soundtracks, or if I did I'm sure I'd wind up with a bootleg. I get the feeling that goes for quite a few of the "leechers"

I know the rules/etiquette here. Seriously, even the guys that don't contribute, but are part of the community and have the decency to do things like: type a single sentence saying "thank you" or hit the "like button" - or even just engage in general discussion without being crass - will have a good reputation and are likely have their requests fulfilled etc.

But I'll tell you now, rarely do these infrequent users, or users who rarely comment except for making requests telling mods to kick other users out on their asses - so they can quickly get back to not being a positive member in this community will have anything done for them.

Would that point be halfway in if my rip? Or close to the end in a standard OST rip because the song does have a natural skip in it.

Close to the end on the standard OST... but I did not know it was intentional for it to have a natural skip in it. If that's the case, I guess nevermind on the request. Unless your expanded soundtrack fixed the problem. ;)

About the (rather silly) discussion we had the last couple pages:
There seems to be around 3 main types of sharer. (No view on ethics here.)
Those that want to make money with it (usually coupled with the hobby beforehand). Others that trade, acquire and give, to complete their own wishlist or goal. And those that (more causal) give and take, without too much emphasis on a specific scheme. (All of these often come in an extreme position of either downloading (leeching) or uploading (sharing), but that is usually a personal preference.) Others are somewhere inbetween or outside of my understanding. People like to give something back for everything they got in return, even if it's only a hundredth of it.
And all those peoples gather here (or somewhere else, mostly in a place where they can get what they want), and clash together in text form. It reminds me a bit about this documentary report I saw last time about "Onsen (http://anonym.to/?http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Onsen)", where a bunch of people from diffrent classes gather together in a bath (more or less) naked, to be just human. People seemingly often forget that the medium music itself stays untouched, but the economy and everything build around that is affected in this struggle of protection of "intellectual property" (I'm not a great fan of this concept anyway, but that doesn't mean much - there are some great concepts that are more loose). It is nothing wrong about supporting the artists and distribution companies, but sometimes I just have the feeling they create for the flow of income, and not for the reason of actually create something worthwhile (but that is a point of perspective for sure).
And now, in this forum, everyone comes with his own views and judgements. It is the endless battle of dispute and it is what keeps everything lively in here (in a more ugly way, as I have to say till now), but I think most people don't really care if someone is in the right or wrong. Mostly it is between a few people that clutter one after another text window, simulating a chat (conversation), something that would last outside of the 'www' maybe 5 to 15 minutes. But in a forum it can go on for days and days, cause there is no quick processing of your ideas and people don't seem to be aware that actually thousands of anonymous people have to read those awkward things, and the opposite side is usually quite spurred by that fact. It pains, it really does (if you care about it), so please do us the favor and handle these things in a more private way (private messages or meet the person in a chat). Please do not rely on strangers protecting your view on things. There are some kind souls that do, but usually they have to exert themselves and you never know their background of motivation. I never saw a person that would try to handle a (unwanted) situation over years. At some point you just come to the understanding that things usually resolve alone, but the hassle is just not worth it. (So my veneration for those, that still do.)

Well, I guess I forgot what I actually wanted to say, but I have to support Zetto's view on all those anti-aristocratic privileges (what has become the core of this section in ffshrine), to just enjoy as long as it lasts (attentive) and leave your inner demon(s) at some place, where it belongs after all, inside you. Do love and destroy those, that want to be destroyed. ;)

A general thanks for the many great soundtracks. Some are worth a second thought for the own collection, and some old and obscure ones are just a great find!

The audio gets ripped, the data track gets skipped... Or, at least, that's what happened when I've ripped stuff like Yakuza 3 EU release and Sorcerous Stabber Orphen (both albums have data tracks). The data track will likely appear in the log file.

Sorry everyone, I didn't expect my account to be suspended so fast. Argh.

You should change the file names to make it less evident as to what is inside your .rar files before you upload them. That way, they can't, (at least I think), take down your files for copyright reason for they do not know the contents of them. Passwords are also advised for added protection. The way I see it is; Passwords + Unknown file name = no copyright. I had to learn that the hard way though.

Coming from someone who lost his own MF account six days ago due to suspension [registered back on May 4th, 2009], and have been using stuff like obscure names, passwords... and even private shares with a few users through PM: such stuff isn't really important, I believe they still have some "way" to go and check the stored archives' content which get too much downloads in a short amount time... Not to mention another important fact which may be taken into consideration: referrals/refback, or whatever is their specific name. Basically, if you go and post a link like this: Free Cloud Storage - MediaFire (http://mediafire.com) and one clicks on it, they can tell where the visitor's coming from:

http://forums.ffshrine.org/
Which may be in some sort of "black list" there, thus, MediaFire decides to delete the file... Or put it in a deletion-queue. MEGAUPLOAD and Multiupload links used to die fairly quickly around here for a similar reason, I believe. By putting links into code tags, you actually make them viewable to the community's visitors who are not registered, too, so you still have high chances to end up reported->deleted... Regardless of the "precautions" you take, you'll end up deleted, sooner or later, you seal your account's fate once you upload copyrighted material. You could only hope you last long enough, but thanks to the MEGAUPLOAD's fiasco there are rough times ahead for filesharing through file-hosting services.... Now they're the hot-topic.

The best way around this is to use some sort of link anonymizer if you think that the problem is their recognizing the source of the links. I got tired of doing so myself though.

Well, I guess it's time to anonymize every single link a have.
Do you know of a faster, automatic method of doing this instead of copying & pasting "http://anonym.to/" in front of every url manually? Example: "http://anonym.to/http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?b9rw60anw6v9je3"
Why doesn't just everyone do this?

I mean one where I can just copy & paste my whole forum and it would add the anonymizer in front of all the http:// .

Not that I can think of. I don't see why copying anonym.to/ in front of your links is a big hassle compared to all the other code you put in a new post. If I was going to implement it I would just edit my post template on texter (free program that lets you set up text macros) to add the anonym.to/ stuff to my url code. I already have the majority of the code for a post in a single macro anyway.

That baby picture was just creepy. At least Trollface is funny. BTW, I have a few things on discs and others I've downloaded here over the months, but I'm torn concerning a host site with all the craziness lately. Plus, the best download rate I can get from the more reliable sites is 340 KB/sec, so my upload speed from here would at best be half that, but I could likely use the odd computer at college now and then. But in all fairness, what's a good site for loading things and linking to? I was downloading tons of anime from Zomgupload, but they've disappeared from the listings on animetake.com, so either they went bust or weren't that great after all. Fiberupload is touchy, and most of the other ones in use from people on animetake etc are just pathetic and a pain in the arse. Should I just wait a few more months for the dust to settle then see what options are around? I also kinda hate the idea of splitting files up. Call me lazy because I am, but I'd like to avoid it if it's at all reasonable to do so. And now you lot are going on about Mediafire turning on us too. WTF is this about child porn sharers? Ugh. Also, call me cheap because I am, but with all these other sites going down and/or suspending and even deleting accounts people paid for, well, I'd rather not waste money on the ether. So seasoned sharers, let me know what you'd personally use. Cheers.

I wish I had a suggestion jlaidler but I don't know that many of the sites are very good still. The best I've used so far is peejeshare but it seems to have issues occasionally. I have no idea how long the links will stay active though.

As far as I can tell, only folder links got deleted by mf here. You never know which places they travel to, once they got posted here.
It is a bit strange, since in the past some MU links survived, while others (almost all) got deleted after some hours.
Single links from diffrent users using mf, even without "anonymizing", are lasting fine till this date btw, but as end user you never know, how and why something hits you and others not.

Edit: I revoke my statement. Maybe it has nothing to do with folders, but with the attention it gains in a short period of time.

Guess I'll just lay low for a while. I had some anime stuff on Megaupload until it went bust. Hell, from what I've heard of the court case they actually might have a snowball's chance in Hell of even winning. Who knows. Meantime, everyone else should keep their eyes peeled for something they want or might want down the line, and snag it up just in case.

Not my rip, I finally found it on a torrent after looking for it for some time. And I'm not disappointed at all ;)

Thanks for that, but when i split the cue file with Cue-Splitter, its asks for a audio file too. I allready tried to convert the Tak file with Tak-Converter to wave or something, but that doesnt work either...

Use Foobar2000. just drag the tak file into the program, you can convert the individual tracks from there.

I guess that's because the cue is "false" in the way that it should contain Japanese symbols, but doesn't because Japanese is still not really supported by EAC. (I had the same experience when trying to rip a Japanese disc). As the file itself contains Kanji and Kana, too, but the cue itself isn't able to have them, it's only logical that cue-splitter isn't able to find the audio file. But even if you renamed the file to Romaji/Western letters and changed the link in the cue, too, it wouldn't help you very much as all the separate audio files would have useless file names (as these names are saved in the cue incorrectly, too.)
So my recommendation would be the same as jlaidler's: Use foobar2000 and the tak, because that one has the correct names.

That makes absolutely no sense.

Cuesheets aren't even standardized, so it's no problem to just encode them with e.g. UTF-8 or sjis-open. And both these char encodings support kana and kanji.

Cuesheets themselves may support UTF-8 and thus Kanji and Kana - but that doesn't change the fact that the cue that EAC creates when ripping a CD is not UTF-8. When I ripped Gyakuten Saiban, I experienced that myself - I couldn't really find a solution for it, but had to correct the wrong names manually.
I don't know if there is a solution for telling EAC to use UTF-8 or Unicode by now. But I can certainly tell that the person who ripped the Fire Emblem: Kakusei-CD didn't know it, and that's why the track names and the file name in the cue are a mix of random, useless symbols.

Here is an interesting alternative to anonymizing links. What if you posted encrypted text with the link that has to be decrypted using a program like immediatecrypt? https://code.google.com/p/immediatecrypt/
Readers would have to install this small program and decrypt the data and bam there are the links.

Sounds good !

But, you cant bear people to install (you could use web interface when you have java runtime) a crypto Program,
if they cant even handle simple captcha entering to get to the links on linkcrypters/linkanonymizers,

And it seems, it is a must that you have installed java runtime, thats sure a Problem for some People.

In addition to what has been said by Executable, it's safe to say you'd have to link that tool every time you post something encrypted with it and given you have to provide a password to decrypt the text... well... it really isn't solving the "reported-links" problem. You'd just have the users take unnecessary steps, those who want to report links will likely decrypt and do their deeds.

I guess it might help with automated bots/spiders checking for links.

Don't worry, that one was a FLAC rip of a CD recorded from 128kbps MP3 files, there was quite a discussion back then. This one is not an easy one to acquire, as far as I know, no one has made a Lossless rip of the original Scitron release. We will have to wait.

AFAIK EAC uses the default charset encoding of the operating system. For almost all rips originating from asian users this is either sjis-open, gb18030 or big5-hkscs (there may be more, but this is my experience). So the "mix of random, useless symbols" statement is nonsense. It's just that your editor (or OS) doesn't properly detect the used charset encoding. I use iconv on linux to convert everything to utf-8, but you can also use Firefox to detect the charset (add txt extension to filename and then open it with the browser, charset autodetection works properly 99% of the time -- if not you need to fiddle around with the encoding yourself).

Thanks for that, but when i split the cue file with Cue-Splitter, its asks for a audio file too. I allready tried to convert the Tak file with Tak-Converter to wave or something, but that doesnt work either...Friends don't let friends use medieval cue-splitter. Use foobar or cuetools

Thanks for that, but when i split the cue file with Cue-Splitter, its asks for a audio file too. I allready tried to convert the Tak file with Tak-Converter to wave or something, but that doesnt work either...

TAK lossless fileformat is currently only developped to be played by Foobar2000 (and CUETools according to the one above me). If you want to Encode it to FLAC for better compatibility, you can get the TAK encoder here :
Components for foobar2000 (http://foosion.foobar2000.org/components/?id=tak)
Install that into Foobar2000, import the TAK file (not the CUE) and convert it (right click on file in the playlist -> Convert) to FLAC from there. And then, you need to change the reference in the CUE-File (open with notepad) from .tak to .flac. Then, you can split the file correctly with Medieval Cue Splitter. I use Medieval CUE Splitter too and it's a very good tool!

Wrong. It is broken software and should _not_ be used.

[...] but you can also use Firefox to detect the charset (add txt extension to filename and then open it with the browser, charset autodetection works properly 99% of the time -- if not you need to fiddle around with the encoding yourself). That sure is handy, thanks (the obvious isn't always too obvious).
_
As a (win) solution for "garbage text", you can take the CUE file and open it in a text editor (like OpenOffice). There you choose the right charset (for Japanese, 'Shift-JIS' for example) and set a useful font (for Japanese, 'MS Gothic'), and if the characters look right, you are set to save them back in a useful char set (like the universal solution 'UTF-8'). It is recommended to keep the original cue sheet as backup.

Another (quicker) way would be using AppLocale. Open the basic editor with it and drag the CUE file in there and then save it in your preferred character set. You could use the program for applications like EAC too (if you don't want to (or can't) switch every time to a diffrent language setting), but apploc itself is a somewhat outdated piece of software, with some barriers, but does still its job.

Thanks for all your help with the Cue-File from Fire Emblem. With Foobar2000 it works now! :)

That all sounds pretty good - however, it does not work completely. Neither Firefox nor opening the cue with an editor and changing the character set. Even if I manually look through all the Japanese character sets, there's no correct output. Some seem pretty good, using the correct Kana, but most of the Kanji are wrong, no strange symbols anymore, but just completely different Kanji.

Chinese encodings (EUC-TW) and its various variants are also in use by some rippers. It's sometimes good to know the origin of the rip. And I presume that Firefox doesn't expose all known encodings in the menu.

But probably you're already looking at a messed up file, where someone else already attempted a (wrong) charset conversion. E.g. conversion from sjis-open to utf8 sometimes seems to look fine for the untrained eye, but in reality the input enc is (e.g.) gb18030. In that case you would need to reinterpret back from utf8 to sjis-open and then apply another conversion. Quite a hassle to track down the original encoding. That's also the reason why I'm very much in favor of posting rip cuesheets and logfiles only with unicode encoding.

Anyway, iconv should also be available on Windows through use of Cygwin (http://www.cygwin.com) (unix env). In use this script to (pre-)process files:

function utf8_process {
local enc1="sjis-open"
local enc2="gb18030"
local filelist
local tmpfile

# swap encodings when requested
if [ "${1}" = "gb18030" ]; then
enc1="gb18030"
enc2="sjis-open"
fi

# check if there are any files to process
filelist=$(ls *.cue *.log *.txt *.TXT *.LOG *.CUE 2> /dev/null)
if [ -z "${filelist}" ]; then
return 0
fi

tmpfile=$(mktemp) || return 1

find . \( -type f -iname "*.cue" -or -iname "*.log" -or -iname "*.txt" \) | \
while read arg; do
iconv -f "${enc1}" -t utf8 "${arg}" > "${tmpfile}"

if [ $? -ne 0 ]; then
iconv -f "${enc2}" -t utf8 "${arg}" > "${tmpfile}"

if [ $? -ne 0 ]; then
echo "error: "${arg}" is neither gb18030 no sjis-open encoded"
continue
fi
fi

# overwrite original file
cat "${tmpfile}" > "${arg}"
done

rm "${tmpfile}"
}

Like I said this works with the majority of the rips. Of course there are still cases from time to time (like CherryCoke encountered) where some work is necessary. Of course one always has the option to just drop all the TITLE tags completly, since this is mostly not metadata coming from the disc itself (except for maybe CD-TEXT).

Hey, Zetto - thanks for your recent posts, very nice.

Quick question - how do I use the new(?) 115 download page? I can't use my 115 download manager (for some reason) to get these files so have to use my browser. I'm prompted with something that translates as "the user does not share the files" or something. I tried inputting the password you supplied (for the archives?) but that doesn't work. Help would be appreciated. Thanks, bud.

Zetto is probably not sharing the files in public. You need to enable public sharing explicitly for each file.

if you are sharing to receive thanks/praise I feel you are missing the point. but of course, you want to make money through sharing so you are in fact missing it already.

You have to install the new u115 download manager (V3.3.1.13), it looks completely redesigned, but works as good as the old one, download it:
