For those wondering how to decompress *.tak files, use this compressor/decompressor.
http://www.rarewares.org/files/lossless/Tak1.0.zip
And you shouldn't get an error with JSharer (or any other site) if you use a download manager like FlashGet.
Yes, I'll look into why there are errors with downloading my stuff from Mediafire, but try to download the stuff using a download manager first. You never know.

Much love, snkhero. <3
Though I'll be honest, at first I thought there was a soundtrack release for Rockman Complete Works (
http://megaman.wikia.com/wiki/Rockman_Complete_Works), but it turns out there isn't....
This is still great, though! :D

Btw, here's a new "Goldeneye" video from Graeme Norgate, thee composer of Goldeneye 007. I posted a comment about his work for Goldeneye, maybe he might actually make a soundtrack release one day if people just keep leaving comments about it XD.
yeah i hope they come out with a release alot of people are leaving rare and most of them have been working with them since the creation of goldeneye david wise has been working with them since (1985)
and i fear rare will never be the same they've been canceling projects left and right like kameo 2 which they canceled recently dought they will ever come out with something as great as (DK) or goldeneye again.
Here's a video from goldeneye on the source engine it kind of gives you a rough idea of what a 007 remake would look like just like they did with perfect dark on the xobox 360 the levels look pretty accurate i wouldn't mind trying this mod out what do say guy's an gal's.

when i convert my music i usually convert it to (VBR V0) slow encoding to get the best audio quality but i do some times keep a few songs in wav for my philips go gear (8G). When ever i buy my self a portable device i always make sure it passes a few requirements like having multiple audio formats, alot of portable devices read more than one format like wav,MPEG-4 SLS,mp3, Ogg Vorbis i've seen some with this format and acc since aac is the successor to mp3 it usually achieves better quality at the same bitrates even thogh it's a lossy compression. I think since portable storage media is getting bigger and better for cheap we are just starting to see them support other commpression formats like FLAC, Monkey's Audio APE , WAV, OGG, MPEG-4 SLS,WMA Lossless, Dolby TrueHD, ATRAC. I have really good ear phones there philipes true surround sound Headphones there good at making most of my mp3 collection sound like shit i don't know if that's a good thing or bad thing cause that just makes me more picky.

The problem is that as storage gets cheaper, the major companies have moved from hard drive based players to flash based players with the advent of the touch screen. Much of this seems to be based upon the fact that a hard drive based player will lag when browsing the menus through touch screen. Plus many of these flash based players are only being released with a max of 32gigs of space, not enough for portable lossless listening. Even if I had one of those rare ones that did support FLAC, I doubt it would support my favorite way of ripping to single flac file with cue sheet so I would have to convert and tag everything to get it to play. I stick with MP3 on my zune because while my headphones are really good I still can't tell much difference.

That's probably why i tend to go for the older model's there sometimes cheaper and can hold a hell of a lot more than the new one's there coming out with. My local pawn shop tend to have a lot of them i plan on buying myself an Archos (250GIG) mp3 player there pretty good and only the few that are new that have a large storage capacity hopefully i'll have one before christmas while the sales are down it's best to get electronics during the holiday's you can get some good bargains but it's hard supporting your self with just a government check every month especially when it's not alot i was deciding do get a really good stereo system but i don't see that a happening any time soon.

I don't know if repairing the RARs will fix the CRC issues. Some seem to have "repair records;" others do not. I extracted with WinRAR and kept the "broken" files. So far it sounds fine, but it's probably not bit-perfect.

keep in mind 120 gig can hold 300 albums in apple lossless.Yeah i know but i like to have some space for videos/images i was thinking about going the extra mile and getting a psp go and buying a (1TB) sd card that way i don't have to stress about space for a long time but that would be cutting it budget wise i could do that maybe over time though ("just shows how poor i am") i would get an iphone but there to restrictive with there software and a little too expensive hardware wise there better than the zune price to price but why would i spend $297.00 for a (32gig) iphone when i can buy me a Archos 5 250 GB for 259.95 off amazon.com.

Sometimes the rapidshare servers are overloaded and so they don't even allow free users to download for a little bit. But the premium users download so fast that if you try back in 10 minutes or so you should be able to get it to let you download.

I would contribute the Super Mario 64 soundtrack I got, but its too scratched up to even rip it. so thats a fail on my part. .. Plus with my crappy income I wouldn't be able to afford the more popular soundtracks that people want so bad.

You download an emulator for the console, then you download a "ROM" of the game that you would like to make a soundtrack of. After that you will have to search for either a game genie code that allows you to browse into a sound test for the game, or you would just have to press a/some certain key(s) somewhere in the game to "activate" sound test.
As far as I know though, Sega Genesis were the only console that had games with sound tests, I might be completely wrong though.
You can find a little more detailed tutorial here:
http://project2612.org/tutorial/ (although, you would rather rip it with Gens + WAV dump(aka. log) instead of Kega + VGM dump since Kega + WAV dump doesn't really sound like it does in the real deal.)
Like for example, Sonic 3 had an almost impossible "cheat" that required the player to press 8 buttons in like, one and a half second, so I used a game genie code instead. I still haven't succeeded in putting in that combination in under... 1 seconds. Might be that it's only possible on the Genesis though ^^ I'm gonna have to try it on the Genesis console one day.
You know you could have done the left left, right right, up up code when holding onto a swing right? :P ... Its an alternate method to get sound test with sonic 3 & knuckles lol
Also do you know if file types such as .gym .spc ect are lossy or lossless quality? I'm assuming Lossy but no way to check :P

They aren't really audio files. They are more like midi files, so lossless and lossy as terms don't really apply to them, but I guess you could say they are lossless. They are a set of note-by-note instructions to emulated sound hardware; i.e. instead of approximations of wave forms, they are sets of instructions of which notes to produce, at what length, attacks, etc. It's much like the difference between vector graphics and something like a jpeg.(i.e. draw this line there, this length, this color as opposed to representations of colors in pixels)

They sound the same. Try it with a cartridge you own--I just tried it with Master of Monsters (genesis). Played the cart on my genesis, played the rom, played the .vgm file, they sound the same to me. The only difference is you have make to sure the tempo is the same, as some may be coded for PAL systems and will be slower. That's the only difference i've seen...

I'm not saying it's the same for every machine. There is a different decoder for every type. And you're not using different "chips" , you're emulating the genesis chip (or the super nintendo chip, etc) through software and rendering it as audio. It only sounds counter-intuitive because you're assuming things about the process that are incorrect.
They sound the same as the originals. I hope that answers your question, and sorry for getting really off topic :0 :)

.VGM and .VGZ are ALWAYS lossless. Would you like me to make them into FLAC's for you? It is actually a better idea to just listen to the emulated files, as they are still lossless and take up way less space. The only reasons to convert them to anything else is if:
1) you don't like using the program you have to open the emulated sound files in, or
2) You want to listen to the songs on your portable player that doesn't read the file you're working with.

Why the hell are you so obsessed with "lossless" files from anything PRE PS1 anyway? I don't think any soundtracks for games composed earlier than that had anything of such quality that lossless is even worth it.
jakob
11-19-2009, 05:36 AM
Thank you! The genesis cartridge was, as a whole, less than a megabyte usually, or just barely 1 or 2MB (rarely up to 4MB). Do you think they used anything more sophisticated than midi or synthesized sound (i.e. prerecorded sequenced samples) ?? The story is the same with the super nintendo and most certainly the NES, Master System, and gameboy, as well as gameboy advance, sega saturn, n64, and in many cases ps1 AND ps2. The samples got a LOT better, but mostly they were still prerecorded samples, not live music. I say "many cases" for ps1 and ps2 because some of that IS live music, especially with the ps2.

I will concede, there are rips that sound better than others, as some emulators do a better job of emulating the sound of the system they are emulating (be it genesis or otherwise) and plugins that read the files handle them slightly differently. Your "cleaner sound" might sound better, but might not represent the original sound as well, or maybe it does. You would have to listen to it next to an actual sega genesis. I'm not saying your rip isn't good. It's probably great. I'm just saying that they do all sound just a little different. Personally, I think .vgm's sound a bit better than .vgz's typically, but that might just be because I have to use winamp to open my .vgz's and the winamp plugin may not be as good as the foobar plugin. I don't know. All I know is, I used to play my genesis all the time, and I can't tell the difference almost every time.
Sirusjr
11-19-2009, 06:00 AM
Well lossless is essentially a worthwhile investment when you are dealing with something played by live instruments. Although many times PS1 and PS2 soundtrack releases were sort of upsampled for the soundtrack. For example go play Final Fantasy XII and then listen to the lossless soundtrack and you will notice a difference. But something like Final Fantasy I-VII and you are going to have a hard time justifying it. Sure I own a few soundtracks that probably don't benefit so much from lossless but thats mostly because I am a huge Hitoshi Sakimoto nut.
jakob

I haven't heard the officially released soundtrack, so i'll have to take your word on that. (which I trust)

Sirusjr
11-19-2009, 06:24 AM
Well the game was on PS2 and so they had to compress the music and/or decrease the quality of the synthesizer to get all that data on the disc most likely. I remember reading on RPGamer somewhere that the soundtrack was much better quality on CD than the in-game sounds although I never did a comparison myself. Sakimoto does have a way with picking great samples though for his synthesized works.
jakob
11-19-2009, 06:28 AM
I guess that makes sense, just reducing the quality of the samples for the in-game audio. Ok, that makes total sense.

Personally, unless they offer extras like remixes and arrange version of songs I'm fine using byte-floor, raw sound file rips like NSF, SPC or VGZ. Yes they take WAY less space than WAVs or FLACs and are considered at least as lossless as the original systems they were for. The only real problems you can run into with them is improper tagging and timing codes, and yeah it can be a bitch to deal with that.
But then there's always the feeling of getting the OFFICIAL release of a soundtrack that can comfort some who want to play it safe, or that find sound files are illegal.
As a matter of fact, you'll note that N64 disc trilogy I posted awhile back was also ripped long ago in USF (lossless N64) format from the games themselves -- coders dump the actual sound code that would play back in the system's sound generator, then write a program that emulates said sound generator to play the code back on the likes of computers. Usually, you even get some extra bonus or unused tracks that were never released anyways. USF is how I "ripped" the Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness soundtrack, a soundtrack never officially released by Konami. All I did was convert the USF files to FLAC.
Take for instance the recent request for Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon, which indeed had an awesome soundtrack. I'd advise those waiting around for someone to rip it to check here
http://hcs64.com/usf/, as there is already a wealth of lossless N64 music ready to d/l, including Goemon, and I believe Goemon's Great Adventure too. To play them back just head to Zophar's Domain (
http://www.zophar.net/utilities/audio-players.html) and pick up a USF-Winamp plugin. And -- VOILA -- you've got your 64 music in lossless at a mere fraction of the space, because the difference is you aren't playing back a recorded file, but the code itself that contains the data to play the music back. VERY similar to a MIDI file.
I love my USF versions of the Goemon 64 games, but I know, from listening to MP3s of the official osts, that they contain extended, remixed versions of the songs, and so I too am throwing my request in yet again for the official OSTs to these games.
So in closing I'm fine with lossless sound file osts unless the disc versions go above and beyond what's offered otherwise. And of course if you really really like the soundtrack and can still find a way to buy it, you should be supporting those great game musicians out there anyway. I've had trouble tracking down the official osts of the Goemon games myself.
er... sorry about the long post.

because they dont have the cue files / gap detection ? its only cosmetic. or you mean actual errors with skips?

Would be awesome if we could stop the Square mania.
Not only are a number of Square or now Square-Enix soundtracks popular but they are also enjoyable and contain big melodies. If things are being shared from personal collections it makes sense that most of them are also from something popular. Also I plan to post Final Fantasy XIII ost when it comes out. Masashi Hamauzu is an awesome composer regardless of his connection to Square-Enix.
@ Metroid -
It is true that a number of rips on this thread don't contain cues, myself included. However, from my understanding the only benefit of including a CUE file is making it easier to burn a perfect copy after downloading. The majority of my rips and uploads in this thread were done before I understood that most people cared about cue sheets and are otherwise great quality. It takes a huge amount of time to rip and upload that many soundtracks such that I find the benefit gained by re-doing everything would be outweighed by the significant time investment required.
Calling an upload worthless because, while lossless, it doesn't contain a cue sheet is like calling an upload worthless because it isn't properly tagged or doesn't contain scans. Inclusion of a Cue, Scans, and Proper Tags are all nice to have but the absence of either is not going to significantly detract from your enjoyment of the files.

We can't do much about that. Unfortunately, most of the albums posted here comes from other sources..... I don't know if I'm saying it correctly in english, but we have to take them like we find them. Anyway, I'm beginning to learn how to identify true lossless from a fake transcode...... And while most of the albums here are not properly ripped, they're indeed lossless. Since the aim of this thread is to gather music in lossless format, I would call it a success.
Personally, when I ripped the few albums I had I never cared too much about CUE files and Gaps, what mattered to me was that audio files remained lossless (Also, as far as I know, softwares like NeroBurning ROM automatically add standard 2 seconds gaps between the tracks when you create an Audio CD, so....)

If the album was properly ripped then you can say for sure "this is a real lossless album. If it did not, how can you be so sure if it is lossless?, by looking at the spectral graphics is nowhere what I would call the proof I would want taking into account the experience I have been in the last 7 years with VGM, remember you are sharing this to the community, its like when you take your ID with you, your ID proves that you are that person, without your ID how can the people believe in you? the same thing goes right here in this thread.
If the rip is only for you, great do whatever you want, cut gaps or whatever, but if it is for the purpose of sharing it then please keep it standardized I mean properly ripped or kept it without any major changes that would demote the status of a proper-rip.

Cue files are good for everything, with cue files there is no need to write tags into the flac file or files. Audio files are not meant to hold tags or any other info that is irrelevant, take wav as a good example. Audio files must be kept clean. All the info should be inside cue files, cue files are mere pointers.
I do understand you did not know about many things, now you know. There are still many things you and many need to know. I do learn things everyday too and I do not know everything and I will never know everything, the same goes for you guys.

I do understand your point, but it's also true that spectrum analysis can tell what's lossless and what's a lossy transcode, and there's no getting around that: if you know how to do your job you'll always spot the fake one, you can't fool spectrum analysis (the same cannot be said for cue and log files).... A side note about proper lossless encode: if I remember correctly Genesis/SNES soundformat(s) have differents samplerates from the "standard" CD one........ Pretend for a moment that we want to encode some Sega Genesis soundtracks in lossless, we can't turn them into 44100KHz .wav, we would distort the files by changing the source's original samplerate..... [There should be a discussion about correct samplerates/frequencies in the Anime/Videogame Music forum]. Anyway, as you know, CUE/LOG files are really easy to edit with a Notepad, even their presence doesn't grant you a proper rip. For the way I see it, if I want a perfect version of an OST my only choice is to buy it.

Spectrum analysis is a BS theory invented, There are many albums that for you would be lossy but the reality is, it was properly ripped and it is the same as the original CD source but the spectral BS theory analysis say that they are not real lossless files. Don't believe this crappy. There other cases like they are real lossless and the reality is the files are transcodes.

The only way you could check against your CD in the ACC DB is by keeping the original CD image intact. That is the proof you need to finally say "Yes my CD is original".

I do understand NOW which is why all my current and future rips include gaps and cues and all that but I also recognize that the ripping process takes time and my original rips are not THAT faulty (of course others may have ripped worse, i didn't analyze this new rip you said was bad) that it is worth re-ripping. I agree that in the perfect world all uploaders should follow certain criteria but it is better to say "ok that wasn't perfect do it better next time" than to say "go back and re-do all those they were all wrong".
As I understand the purposes of lossless, the main thing is audio quality. If rips that don't include a cue or log were rejected then we would suggest that people shouldn't try their hands at ripping because invariably the first time will not be perfect. I don't recall if my original set of rips included gaps but I don't think it is really that significant. I went through the trouble to rip those and if you don't like it you can find another source for whatever is posted and post it yourself.

Because you are so adamant about rips being proper would you or someone else like to write up a guide for ripping that I can post on the first page? I think a good explanation of why we want certain things like CUE or LOG should be included so new users don't think they are going through pointless motions.

Why? I can readily hear differences between the "lossless" files I've obtained and high quality vbr mp3s of the files. There is an audible difference, and that's good enough for me. Even if the rips I have aren't "truly lossless", they are much much better than any of the mp3 counterparts I have encountered. (Besides, my lossy format of choice is ogg vorbis.)

This is such a bs conversation. If you hear distortion, it's a bad rip. If you don't, it's a good rip. Why don't you just get a perfect lossless rip of some sheep bleating for all you care about the actual music. Does the music sound good? Can you hear a difference? Throw away your spectral analysis tools and use the superior tools that are stuck on your head, your EARS. You don't experience music through a spectral analysis readout, log file, cue, or whatever, you experience it aurally (through hearing it.) If your ears say it's good, it's good.
For me, anything other than a live performance (Even a recording OF a live performance) is a degradation in the listening experience. Don't get me wrong, I love listening to recordings and synthesized VGM, but nothing hears music like your very own pair of ears.

You said it best, AR is not a reliable source because VGM album data is rarely uploaded to it. I have had MANY albums come up as unverifiable simply because the album could not be found in the database. As awesome as VGM is, it's still got a LONG way to go where popularity and awareness of it is concerned. It's still considered a geeky industry, and to those that say so: fuck you, and your loss. More for us.
Spectrum is THE way to go. You can see all the frequencies in plain view and you can find any drop-offs or blank spots. You can also tell by the overall resolution of the data at extreme zoomed-in levels.
That's not to say it's a perfect test, no, there is no perfect test, and the ideal system is to run many tests on select random files in various ways (I use a system of realtime frequency analysis, spectrum and ear analysis and yes it helps to have the EAC log). Of course the only foolproof method is to obtain a legal copy of the album itself, and if you're really so gung-ho about a perfect rip, than doing that will work for you, Metroid.
That said I'm not going to disrespect or disregard a lossless album posted here just because it comes from an outside source that may not have included logs or cues. It's the thought and the sharing that counts here, spreading the wonderful music of videogames -- we'll let others know if we find problems with the quality itself, but we don't use Accurate Rip to guage that, that's for damn sure.

freedb is full of doubles, triples and such of the same data. It also stopped being developed long ago. Freedb was the original CDDB until Grace note bought it and freedb was created of the last open snapshot of CDDB.
http://musicbrainz.org/
Mainly the picard tagger is used. Is a program that lets users input their own cds, matches it to existing CDs or can scan audio files for fingerprints to try and pick the best tagging for it.
The database is open to all to submit and edit. Which keeps it clean and as correct as is possible when edits are fixed etc.
Last but not least is that it is ever expanding, updating, and being worked on.
ok i'll give this a try. thanks.
Log and cue files tell more about the rip, and whenever I see someone share a rip without them, I automatically assume the wrong read offset setting was used, gaps were not detected, the tracks were not split correctly, and most importantly, a ripping program other than EAC or XLD was used.
Spectrum analysis cannot detect whether a rip was made from a CDR, but with a log and cue it's easier to detect. Also, when you have two or more different sources of a lossless rip, one ripped correctly but without the log and cue (i.e. the uploader never included them) and another copy with the log and cue but with the wrong EAC/XLD settings, it's useful to have the log and cue of the improper rip handy to know that the copy which doesn't have those files was ripped correctly.
Log and cues are useful for other things, too. For example, I know by inspecting the log and cue sheets of Mobius1/Protium's uploads, that some if not all of his rips are fake and were stolen from other sources. He most likely edited the pre-gaps in cue sheet before mounting the image with a virtual drive, re-ripped it with EAC and changed the drive to his Pioneer model in the log. He's done this multiple times, yet without his edited log and cue files, it would be very difficult to detect.
Another example is jalvarez82's rip of Technosoft Game Music Collection Volume 7, which doesn't have a log and cue sheet included and wasn't ripped with EAC or XLD. Had I not already have a copy of this correctly ripped with an EAC to compare, I wouldn't have been able to detect a major problem with one of his tracks.

For me it's about the music, and the quality of said music, not the accuracy of how the music will line up on a disc (this is the media player not disc-man age after all). For the most part, offset discrepancies will NEVER be noticed by the human ear -- they are so very very very small -- and they are so unimportant to the enjoyment of the music itself.
Hey if you can include a LOG and CUE go for it, it's highly encouraged. But making it a necessity here would limit our scope and openness to outside link sources, and there has been some fantastic stuff posted through those.
Anyway, keep the good stuff coming people.

Obviously the performance can be bad, but "quality" as I used it in the previous post referred more to quality in the bit rate, sample, etc, sense. Nothing is going to be able to record and play back the music you hear performed live anywhere near as well as you heard it.
As far as the performances being bad, it sounds like you just haven't listened to very many good musicians perform live. I respect a good recording as much as the next person, and I understand that doing it well is difficult, but I respect a good live performance much more, as it is done in real time with no editing.
SmartOne

I was referring to both the sound technicians at a live event mixing the mains and the recording/post-processing engineers. Editing depends on the skill of the musicians. The skill of the musicians is irrelevant.
A good recording will be always be better than a good live event in certain respects.
jakob
11-21-2009, 05:29 AM
The recording quality may be better, but not every live performance is mixed. Maybe they are at rock concerts but the ability of the musicians being irrelevant is the biggest crock of trash I've ever heard.
( I'm assuming you meant to say "editing depends on the skill of the engineers." the ability of the musicians may be irrelevant in parts of the editing-I.e. A worse performnance may require more editing- but who wants a great recording of a bad performance?!)

Editing occurs depending on the skill of the musicians. Live events have more variables. Recording is at least consistent. Recording = better.

Quick question...
Say I downloaded a ape+cue image, then split that into separate .ape tracks with "Medieval CUE Splitter", then used "Riverpast Audio Converter" to change the tracks to .wav, then changed those .wavs to .flac...
... is there anything in that process that could possibly compromise the integrity of the audio?
I assume there isn't. I assume you can keep converting between ape, wav, and flac any number times and lose no information since they are all lossless, yes?
Sorry for the dumb question. I'm new. :)

Since we seem to have a bunch of lossless nuts here, what is the allure of FLAC over wav files? WAV files are uncompressed. FLACs compress the file slightly, right? Do FLACs handle something better than WAVs? Is it just that you can embed tags and album art into a FLAC? Do they burn better CDs? I've never really heard this discussed. I'm assuming it's not a file size issue, unless that is part of it? Sorry if this question is silly.

FLAC basically compress the data by archiving a perfect copy of the .wav file for future "unzipping". It makes the file smaller but it also retains the lossless quality. There are other good things about it like the embedded cuesheet and Audio MD5 properties, but I don't know much about that..... The tags are useless, since all the information you really need can be found in the cuesheet. Anyway, just for example, let's take Disc #4, Track #5 of FFVII: Voices of the Lifestream [Omnislash (Hurry Up!)] -
Original WAV properties
Filesize - 42 MB
Duration - 4:10.044 (11026947 samples)
Bitrate - 1411 kbps
Codec - PCM
FLAC File properties
Filesize - 28.8 MB
Duration - 4:10.044 (11026947 samples)
Bitrate - 967 kbps (it's still lossless, so you're most likely to not detect the difference)
Codec - FLAC (Compression Level 8)
The whole album is slightly over 2.0 GB in size when in wav form, compressed with FLAC Level 8 it gets down to 1.29 GB, that's quite an improvement. I've read there are lossless formats which compression rate is better than wav, but for what I saw the difference in filesize is not that big, so I stick to FLAC.
As far as I know, it's better to uncompress the FLAC to WAV, before the burning process.... But there are software/plugin(s) which can burn them directly.

Myrkul - What kind of music is Sakura Wars please? I am not familiar with it.
8 Discs... that is a LOT of content.... What kind of music is this again? I am kind of unfamiliar with it, other than that it's a strategy RPG...
The box content is huge, and the packaging is probably one of the best and most complete ever made..
It's kinda hard to give you a quick summary, as the box got around 150 songs. There are lot (i mean lots!) of vocal songs of course, covering the first four Sakura Wars/Taisen games but also various anime episodes, but there are also a few drama & a few live performance tracks.
All tracks are composed by Kouhei Tanaka, THE man behind all Sakura Taisen music.
At least, it's a must have for Sakura Taisen fans.
I suggest you check this complete review (
http://www.rpgfan.com/soundtracks/st-complete/index.html) for more details.

OK, TOO MANY OT HERE. This, I believe, is why this is the only 4-star thread I see in these forums. We need requests, uploads, discussions about the uploads. Not whether or not lossless is good, spectral analysis in BS, and what have you.
Had I not already have a copy of this correctly ripped with an EAC to compare, I wouldn't have been able to detect a major problem with one of his tracks.
Yeah imagine that, you would have listend and enjoyed music without knowing that the offset was wrong! Thank god that didn't happen!

bitrate is not the value of audio quality with lossless qualities. bitrate is only a measure of quality with lossy codecs. a flac saying it has 761k bitrate is in relation to how much data is in that recording. ie. a piano track can have a lower bitrate compared to a dance track, doesnt mean its low quality. with lossless codecs, the bitrate is also in relation to how much compressed the file is. ie. flac level 8 vs wav

Where did I mention an incorrect offset was the problem for Technosoft GMC 7? It's actually a skip in one of the tracks, but that probably wouldn't bother you considering how much you love mp3s and lossy music.

Heroes of Might and Magic V Original Soundtrack (Complete Edition) 2008
Could anybody upload it, please?
Where did I mention an incorrect offset was the problem for Technosoft GMC 7? It's actually a skip in one of the tracks, but that probably wouldn't bother you considering how much you love mp3s and lossy music.
Actually that would bother me quite alot in contrast to mp3 artifacts that are much less intrusive. But this kind of skips/pops can be spotted by regular listening without logs or any bit-comparing, assuming that you actually listen to it and don't just collect bits.

any good program for spectrum analysis? I have a few questionable albums that may be improper ripped, but it could also be that the recording is old or bad, with today's standard.
Square mania?.. people request albums they like, and share albums they have regardless of the categorization of the publishing company of the games the were made for. If you want other game soundtracks you could post a request. (you want to enhance this site, not restrict it (to more than vgm music)
about compression of music files:
bitrate is a messure of how much data that is read each second. If you have constant bitrate, you will probably read some data wich does not generate sound.
So when you compress you sort the soundgenerating data in a advantageous way.
but you have to consider that the more advanced the algorithm the compression use, the more you have to compute, so you have to consider wheter you want to play it on the computer where the size or complexety doesn't matter too much, or on your iPod, where you have limited battery time. (but of course you do want to compress to a certain point where you don't have to read a lot of unnecessary data, because that also takes battery time, so a mathematical optimization is required)
the advantage with recordings is that there are no misstakes, however small they may be (especially now that they are analysing and adjusting these with the computers nowadays), whereas in live performances, even the slightest difference in tunes drives me crazy.
and to those who want to do more than just listen to the music, why bother ripping it to lossless files with cue sheets, just copy the cd into one long textfile and masturbate to it or whatever you do.
Request: Lord of Vermilion Original Soundtrack

audacity beta version is the best for spectral analysis in my opinion. you can drop flac and mp3 files directly into it. plus it's a completely free program and it's not bloated with features if you just want it for spectrals and simple editing. here's an example

So no, the highest quality seen today is probably not 1411.
I've got a few DVD-Audio rips, and the bitrate of, for instance, The Eagles' Hotel California is 8200 kbps. I've also once had a Blu-Ray-Audio rip (seriously) whose bitrate was even higher, altough I don't remember what exactly - its sampling rate was 192khz, though.
