Since some people still want to get Lossless encodings of emulators and in order to fully rid The Lossless Video Game Soundtrack Thread (
Thread 64743) of unofficial VGM rips, I'm opening this thread with only one rule:
Emulated Rips Only
That does not include rips made from files used by the games that store the music, also known as "hardfiles" except for those that need an emulator program to be played (such as PS1 .seq).
Enjoy.
For non-emulated lossless rips go to this thread (
Thread 94767).

So, just making sure, BRSTM, AST, STRM, and the other streamed audio files used in Wii games, such as Mario Kart Wii, Super Mario Galaxy, etc, these are "hardfiles", right? So, these would go in the other thread, right?
So, I may as well add something:

As long as they have real music recorded in them and can be properly converted, yes, they go in the other thread.
Thanks for starting the thread, I had made some emulator rips myself but never record them into Audio CD's or lossless, they go directly to MP3, most of the times at CBR, so, I had nothing to upload for this thread. Thanks.

Can I ask a question about your SPC rips, such as Yoshi's Island? What program did you use to play the SPCs? Was it Winamp, or foobar2000? If the former, did you set the sample rate to 44100 Hz, and interpolation to Cubic, and are you aware of that godforsaken automatic volume changing thingy in SNESamp? If not (i.e. if you used foobar2000), did you set the interpolation to Cubic? Generally speaking, it's considered the best sounding. But that's just an opinion.. of lots of people :P (but even if 100% of the entire population of Earth thought it was the best, it's still an opinion, right? XD)

I Like using SNESamp and set it to DSP Emulation to High Quality at 44100 with winamp and i all ready know about the volume problem in SNESamp it's only on some SPC files, i don't like to used foobar2000 for spc files.

Yeah, 44100 Hz is pretty much the lowest you should do it, although 48000 Hz may sound very slightly better, but 32000 Hz (the default) is awful. Also, what do you set the interpolation to? The possible settings IIRC, are None, Linear, Cubic, Sine, Gaussian, and maybe others. As I said, Cubic sounds best (to me, anyway). Also, the volume thing seems to be consistent for all of the SPCs I've used.

Actually, in 3.3.4, "Sinc" is the default High Quality interpolation. But Cubic is the best -- that still stands.

Can someone rip the song from Diddy Kong Racing for "Darkmoon Caverns" in a looped fashion? It seems this song was missing in the official soundtrack release (which I might add is completely RETARDED). Why exclude one song from the official soundtrack is beyond my understanding.

Mother 3 is available in minigsf format, all tagged and everything.
Foobar can play and convert them with the viogsf plugin (
http://www.zophar.net/utilities/gsf/viogsf.html).
At 278 tracks, though, that's one huge load of bandwidth and would take many hours for me to upload. But if no one else does it, i guess i could.
EDIT: Just converted and it's 1.97GB in FLAC level 8.

Can you please state wich emulator and version of it that was used for the emulator recordings?
For example have i been testing a couple of players for PC-engine music (HES files) and they all sounded different, i do of course want to hear the most accurate of them. I tried nesplug, nesplug++ and magicengine. But as i have no reference of the real PC-Engine sound so do i not have any idea wich is the best one... but nesplug++ seems best.
So having emulator info would be great :)

Here is my first game rip. I hope I'm doing everything correctly. I downloaded the SPC soundtrack from SNESmusic.org. I used WinAmp and the SNESamp 3.3.4 plugin to convert it. I chose the High Quality preset and then changed the interpolation to Cubic. The sample rate is 48000 and the sample size is 16-bit. I outputed it to wav files that I then converted into flac. Do I have the right idea? If not, let me know and I'll fix it.
I hope you enjoy it.

Yep, that's pretty much the idea. There is one big annoying thing about SNESamp. And that is that it keeps changing volume through out the song. It'll start quietish, and then increase at the beginning of the song for a few seconds, then every so often, suddenly jump down. There is a way of fixing it, but it has to be done every time you start up Winamp. (If you have Winamp open, after you've already done this, then it won't need to be done, even if you open a new SPC, but once you close Winamp, the settings are reverted). The only downside, is that the files are very quiet, so you'd need to amplify them after converting them in Audacity, Goldwave or whatever you use.

I have no idea what the PC-Engine sound is, either. However, I'm kind of the opposite to you, in the sense of, while you seem to prefer accuracy, I prefer which sounds the best. For example, an SPC at 48000 Hz, and cubic interpolation, is the absolute best you can get, IMO, without going too far (i.e. 192000 Hz <_<), where as, if you want accuracy, rather than what sounds the best, then, 32000 Hz, Gaussian interpolation, and Analog simulation is what you should have (i.e. "Like a SNES").
Although this is only because Cubic and 48000 Hz makes it sound much clearer, and the SNES is too muffly and soft for me.

What needs to be done to fix the volume problem? Also, don't you lose audio quality if you amplify it? I don't know anything about this stuff.

Don't worry... changing the volume does not lower the quality unless you amplify it so it is clipping.

I usually dont care much about the "analog mixing" just that it actaully sound like the soundchip used in the system.. in this case the SPC700, many times so do i make digital recordings if possible (in "digital" i mean the signal never been analog) using S/PDIF.
The SPC emulation is actually very good, i can live with emulated SNES music but i much prefer the 32khz sound as it adds thickness to the sound... at 48khz it really sounds sterile because the intstruments are very simple to begin with.

32000 Hz vs 48000 Hz - YouTube (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2gXW9vWp5qw)
The first 13 seconds is at 32000 Hz, and then it immediately repeats the same part at 48000 Hz. In short, folding frequencies fail.

I never used an emulator, per se, I used the SNESAmp/Alpha-II SPC Player plug-in for Winamp.
Also, it's definitely the Cubic interpolation, however, Cubic interpolation + 44100 Hz or above sounds better.
LiquidAcid
09-25-2011, 05:10 PM
Keep in mind that most audio codecs simply can't handle a sampling rate of 32kHz. The driver needs to resample the stream internally, so that the hardware can play it. If the driver is using a quick'n'dirty resampler, then the resulting quality is of course going to suck. Use a good software resampler (e.g. SRC = secret rabbid code) in this case and integrate it into your playback chain (e.g. foobar2000 can use it to upsample before passing the data to the driver).

Well I thought you meant as in how a completely normal average non-techy guy would refer to an emulator, i.e. SNES9x, or ZSNES. You know, like technically, a Wii is a computer, right? As is a Game Boy. Yet someone might say that a computer is defined as a "big tower thing that's connected to a monitor that I'm using right now", even going as far as to say that a laptop is not a computer <_<.

Ripped directly from M.A.M.E. and carefully edited, I am pleased to present: Fire Barrel - Sound Option, a comprehensive soundtrack of this fine arcade shooter.
As a bonus, I have also included "authentic" album artwork and seamless loops of every track. Old school game and music fans rejoice, Fire Barrel - Sound Option is here.

Just a fix in terminology:
Hard Files are "Streamed" composite PCM, like a wav or mp3.
Emulator Files are "Sequenced" raw files like midi that use a "Sound Font" OR "Composite Samples" and then create the music.

Thanks for ripping that. I really like Chris Hlsbeck, and hearing his music in such a high quality is amazing.
If I can make a request, can you please rip Jim Power?
There are multiple versions (Jim Power in Mutant Planet, Jim Power: The Lost Dimension in 3-D, Jim Power: The Arcade Game) but all are the same game and music, but this game was released on a lot of Consoles (Amiga, Atari ST, Amstrad CPC, TurboGrafx-CD, SNES, DOS), but I manly searching for a lossless rip of the TurboGrafx-CD version (but the others would be nice as well, especially the Amiga version, because thats technically the original version)
EDIT: I just noticed that the picture of the Turrican box looks like they just toke a picture of someone and photoshopped it in XD
EDIT 2: I just listened to the Turrican Sountrack... not so good :( it wasn't even Hlsbeck, just 2 guys trying to recreate his songs

Actually, you're wrong about Edit 1. The cover was actually painted by famed fantasy artist Boris Vallejo. This cover was also used for the Genesis version as well.

I just said that it looks like it, i can see that it is painted, but he made it look so real that it looks to me like a face photoshopped into the armor.

Hi.
I just have one request... can anyone share the Soul Blade (Edge) Music for PS1?
I'm particularly interested in the opening of the game, you know the one that goes... transcending history and the world...
This one is not included in the Soundtrack (at least not with the narrator).
Thanks.

That doesn't belong in this thread. The game uses ATRAC3 streams, and those FLACs are transcodes of them. No emulation.
