In case anyone missed it when I posted this almost a year ago, there is one cue from OHMSS that has yet to see a release. It's the music that plays when Bond is being pursued by Bloefeld's men in the town after his escape from Piz Gloria. This is a DVD rip, and while it may not be perfect, hopefully it will tide some of you over until the cue sees an official release. Enjoy!

Also, I have a 5.1 version (corrected from the poor Blu-Ray mix) of "Live and Let Die" on that page along with a custom mix of Skyfall in 5.1 by mixing an instrumental stereo source with the vocal stereo source.

You have to go to Rafael 00_Agent's Bond Music thread (Thread 45183) to find that track, it's one of few tracks that Kat was unable to edit out the SFX, reason why it's not here... Kafa your work on this fan-made expanded rips are all of the highest quality, and it's fantastic to finally see the spy who loved me expanded. From all of the original soundtracks this was one of the worst represented on album.

In relation to TSWLM, it's great to now hear new interpolations of the song theme in 'Arrival at the Ruins', 'Bond's Bandage/Ferry Arrival', and the Bond 77 theme used on 'Underwater'. This track also has a cool variation of the 'Ride to Atlantis' theme. Maybe one of the best of the new tracks.
One thing i noticed too and which was not presented on the OST, is a 5-note motif for the Russian/Anya characters in 'Missing Submarine', 'Briefing Anya' and 'General Gogol'. Interesting.
Also great work you've made on 'The Pyramids', with mixing the original track with the new material especially now with a new finale added. I got used to hear this track in the OST which fades to 'Eastern Lights', and i was surprised when i hear this new end, which is rather good actually. Of course that you can notice the difference in sound from the OST mix and the new music, but all of that is forgivable considering the source you've been working on them.
Another track worth of mention is 'Trouble with Jaws'. Not because is a memorable track per se, but because apart of 'The Tanker', it's the one that most resembles to a John Barry track in a Bond score.

Out of curiosity, the Lawrence of Arabia spoof scene which has the theme written by Jarre for that movie, was left out of your expanded. I assume it was excluded because was not originally composed by Hamlisch?

Finishing just to thank you again for TSWLM, and praise all the extraordinary rips you've made to the other scores! Thanks Kafa :)

KaFaraqGatri
11-29-2012, 02:32 AM
Thanks for your kind words. Its nice when people notice little things (like the mixing of The Pyramids scene).

I did leave off the non-original stuff and some stuff was just unrippable. This edition I did some time ago; I was planning on revisiting it -- and had started doing it again, as I stated some pages back -- but everyone was so eager to hear it, I thought I'd post the old one. Its still an OK effort, and I doubt I could have gotten anything much extra, to be honest.

As the saying goes, "never say never" - I may still do a Skyfall edit one day. After that, that would be a good place to end it - anyone who's seen the film will know why, the door is closed on a certain part of Bond history and the films from here on in will be different.

Anaximander
11-29-2012, 02:35 AM
i like how hamlisch pays homage to barry in a few subtle ways. he uses part of "stalking" from FRWL, for instance, in the scene where bond and anya are being stalked by jaws in the ruins.

KaFaraqGatri, what can I say other than what has been already said. A huge thank you for presenting us with the very best of Bond Music. Hats off to you, KaFaraqGatri. You've provided us all with the most complete bunch of Bond music to meet our ears so far, and I'll be forever obliged to you for all your efforts.

I support the idea of a 007 mega-post, including your 007 score editions and more editions by other people, with extended versions from Casino Royale (1967) and Never Say Never Again. They're not official movies (and the first is an almost unbearable mess of a film) but both are based on Ian Fleming's creature and deserve a little niche in every Bond fan's heart (at least, they do in mine).

Superb Sir. I doff my hat to you .
I have tried for many years to get all the music.
Even adding dialogue with the music just for giggles, but NOTHING comes as close to this for a COMPLETE collection.
Wonderful work.
Even the late JB would marvel at these..You are 'the master'
This should be your profession.
Thank you once again from a canny Scot.

Also an avid fan of your reconstructions, I wondered why you did a sub-standard job on the Octopussy score. Why didn't you include about 15 minutes of the wonderful suspense music by Johzn Barry that appears in the second, Europe part of the movie? I'm waiting for this material for years to emerge. What was the problem? Disinterest from your part? Instead, you chose to include more of Nic Raine, which doesn't really cut it.

Its impossible. I spent hours on it, but it sounded bad. However, you can make an approximate version using the OST - which I did.

Could you possibly link us this approximate version? Even if it's not perfect we'd really like to hear it.

Also what happened to the other cues in TSWLM? ones like:

Bike chasing Lotus
Tanker launches Submarines
Jailbreak
Disarming the Warhead
Accessing Control Room
Preventing Armaggeddon
Escaping the Tanker

YoYoBoy managed to get these without dialogue/sfx- they just need some good old KaFaraqGatri clean up. Could you give them a go?

I don't mean to be a negative nancy about it but it seems nearly a quarter of the tracks have been left out

@ vzok

No, they are not. Brok2 is right.

@brok2

Same problem with Octopussy - he left out quite a lot of the unreleased suspense cues, which to me are essential.
For my part, it would be good enough to have them with slight s/fx - rather than not having them at all. Somehow,
KaFaraqGatri thinks otherwise.

No bad feelings, raybond. It's just that he was on such an amazing roll with his expanded Bond material that we are used to certain standards. On Octopussy and TSWLM, he clearly left out so much of the material everyone was waiting for, that it just shows. Everything else he did was nothing short of spectacular. Speaking personally, I never touched these film scores because I literally believed that I could never do a job as good as KaFaraqGatri.

Those of you who don't appreciate what KaFaraqGatri has done here for the past few years, can always try to complete the soundtracks themselves rather than complain about someone else's generosity.

Why is it that whenever someone critiques a body of work, or requests something made available that a creator has revealed they have done behind the scenes, people like you always appear and puff out your chests and declare them to be dissing the whole body of work, and you tell them that clearly the only course of action is to do it themselves? Have you ever, even once in your life decided that you do not have the right to be dissatisfied or want more of something that you find really good, because you are incapable of doing that job and reaching that level of quality yourself?

If a builder makes you an amazing house, but forgets to put the glass in the skylight, do you hold your tongue because you can't fit glass?

Do you, for that matter, decide to build a whole new house for yourself from scratch?

Do you now understand how archaic and flawed the ideal you and people like you present to the world; that unless you do something yourself, you must either put up or shut up?

We love and massively appreciate what has been done by KaFaraqGatri and those like him. All we're asking is that, having run 99m of a 100m dash, they take one more step and cross that finish line.

I think the problem with forums is that "tone of voice" cannot always be read easily, because its just words on a screen. So someone saying, "Why isn't X on here?" might be read as being quite harsh and rude, when it might just be a genuine, neutral-toned question - which would be completely obvious if it was being spoken.

I also think its not really a good analogy to use a house being built - after all, a house needs a skylight. No one needs any extra tracks; it just would have been nice. But I didn't forget to include anything. Anything not on these was not on for a reason.

Its been a while since I did these, so I don't know the specifics, but anything I left off would likely due to there being SFX. Or perhaps the music I had was in stereo but there were elements in one of the channels that needed removing, which would mean copying the clean music from one channel to the other, thus creating a mono passage. I wouldn't do this, because it would sound strange. Perhaps this is what other fans have done? There is one example I can think of. There's a rip of TSWLM I heard years ago and it had a DVD rip of the ski case. Not only is the whole score sped-up by 4% (as its from a PAL source) but its littered with obnoxious effects and crashes to mono at numerous points where the sound from one channel has been duplicated into the other to remove SFX. It sounds terrible.

Octopussy was one of the hardest to do, and I just did what I could. TSWLM, as I said before, is my initial attempt. I was working on a new version, which has better sound quality. I am still working on it, and if it ever gets done I'll post a link to it. But I just wanted to get something out there, as a lot of people were asking about it. Its by no means perfect, but we'll see if anything turns up.

As a matter of fact, a discussion like this has rekindled my interest in it. I'll perhaps take a look at my material again soon and see how it goes.

Octopussy has never been high on my wish list for expanded Bond scores. It's a marvelous score, but I think the original album contained most of the best cues from the film. I'm not saying I don't like your expanded version, I quite appreciate it. This comment is directed more at some of the folks that have criticized your edit. I've heard it's next to impossible to rip anything from that film without having sound fx. Also, a lot of cues heard in the film are simply tracked. The Bond theme that plays when Bond is driving the car on the train tracks is the same cue that's played during the taxi chase earlier in the film. Also, 009 gets the knife is the same exact cue played when Bond and one of the knife brothers fall off of the train.

As for TSWLM, I don't understand the fuss. I enjoyed it. I know it was missing stuff, but then it's labeled as Expanded, not Complete. It's the best expanded version I've heard. YoYoBoy's version is indeed more complete, but many of the film rips sound like shit. I see no point in listening to the most complete possible version of a score if I'm just going to fast forward through a bunch of unlistenable tracks anyway.

I agree, the missing music isn't that extensive in comparison to other Bonds. I also agree that its a great score, but some of the best tracks are on the album.

Thanks, Lye. I think people sometimes think the two terms are interchangeable, probably due to soundtrack labels releasing expanded scores that are sometimes actually complete, so consumers get confused. But expanded does not mean complete, generally speaking.

I've also noticed that a lot of users on this forum confuse "Isolated" with "Complete" scores.

The isolated channel on a dvd/blu merely presents the score as heard in the film. Often the directer or composer choose to omit certain parts from the film. So it's not necessarily the complete score.

KaFaraqGatri
12-04-2012, 12:05 AM
True, but one could argue its complete simply because its all the music from the film you saw and enjoyed. You don't know what you're missing otherwise, ya know?

I've listened through TSWLM a few times and I have to agree with previous posters: You've done a really great job as usual, KaFaraq! :)
I recentley stumbled upon what is called "The Spy Loved Me Expanded" with "Good sound Not SFX" and "Tracks: 416 Total time: 73:59 mins.": CDRareScore :: INFO CD (http://leolor.cogia.net/?op=di&idcd=1375)
Does anyone now if this could be the original score or score tracks mixed with album cuts?? 416 tracks sounds way too many and I doubt it includes for example Bike Chase and Ski Chase, considering the obvious impossibility to rip clean FX-free tracks.

Ol'chap, you made the best "expanded" Bond score ever to grace on the internet! I salute you, Commander Kaf! If there ever was a chance that the "complete" scores would surface in the future, I have without a doubt that you would have a hand in it! I would just rank you to Admiral (to admire you from beyond) if that came to pass.

I will say about those isolated scores, they may have not been intented to be in the final stage, but they're good indication of "what if" scenarios could've been put into thought in the development process. Take the Tank chase in St. Petersburg scene, we would've never found out that their was another completely different score for it. Makes me wonder if that their was some sort of "altered mode" in the DVD/BD special section to see how it would came about, just for the curiousity! Seeing the the same scene with the completely redone John Altman/Nick Raine's playing it safe, "Trying my best to catch my female witness" score or Eric Serra's all out, original take of "Fuck it! I'm driving a bloody Tank and I'm not afraid how to use it to get my job done!"

All in all, as Alec Trevelyan would put it, "Well done, good job..."

P. S. I finally finish mashing a better OST and the film version together of Backseat Driver from TND, but ever since the revision of mediafire, I am unable to load it up without the hassle of signing up...

I wish the future will bring a DVD or/and release of "The Spy Who Loved Me" with a quality sounding isolated score or separated music score, so we all finally get to here the movie version of Ski chase/Bond '77, The HMS Ranger hijacking and so on. Of course an official complete original soundtrack would be even better, but I'll doubt that will ever happen.

Sanico I have talked a few times with Lucas K about why they didn't remaster and expand all the scores, and apparently he said that the studios just didn't have the money.Or didn't wish to expand the whole series.Which is a real shame, considering now that some of the original scores have now been lost.
Lucas and his old company Film Score Monthly also produced brilliantly the original Man From U.N.C.L.E. cds sometime back. They were also co produced by Jon Burlingame, who has now written the James Bond 'bible on Bond music. Trust me what Jon doesn't know ..it isn't worth talking about.
A fascinating read for all lovers of Bond music.

Well, KaFaraq . . . as a relative newbie to these pages, and seeing the effusive (and sometimes creative) manner in which others have already expressed their gratitude, I'm not quite sure how to convey the depth of my own appreciation without my voice getting lost in the general din. I think I'll stop short of the billboard-sized colored lettering for now, however, and just state plainly that, as a lifelong lover and collector of filmusic, I've never been satisfied with my Bond library . . . until now. You've completed my collection, and in a manner both stunning in scale and exquisite in the attention to detail. Clearly this was a labor of love for you. Now we're the beneficiaries, and I (honestly) can't thank you enough for your effort and your generosity.

Actually, though . . . I should say my collection's almost complete. The link for The Man With The Golden Gun isn't going through, and (naturally) that's the one I've had a tough time tracking down elsewhere. As much as I hate to ask for more—any ideas on this?

Not true, they'll work with a BD-ROM drive.

And yes, I love those old docs on the DVDs. Patrick MacNee was perfect for them :)

May I just add my THANK YOU to the many others on this list? I must've bought the Bond scores ten times each in numerous formats over the years, but it's lovely to have them sorted out and added to - completed in this way. Thanks for all your efforts and for sharing - - more appreciated than I can say.

As for the new your comment above - are the old docs not on the new Blu-Ray collection (which I have just bought)? I assumed when the PR blurb said the extras included all the old stuff, it meant they'd be on there too. Better not get rid of my old DVDs, in that case.

is anyone else bothered how they've stopped using the gunbarrels at the beginning of the films? i always loved that part, with the barry orchestra, especially in the moore era when he used a slightly more symphonic arrangement of the bond theme. it helped set the tone for the next 2 hours and you knew exactly what you were watching. the way they did it in casino royale was understandable, but removing it from the beginning of quantum really bugged me. if i didn't know better, i'd think i was watching any generic action thriller in those 1st couple minutes.

it'd be like removing the giant star wars logo and william's music from the beginning of episode 7

KaFaraqGatri
01-12-2013, 07:06 AM
It bothers me too. I can understand it being at the end of QoS, as Bond has -- by that point -- become the Bond we know. I really thought it would be at the start of Skyfall but no. No idea why, other than that they wanted a "yeah!" moment with it being the 50th anniversary. I hope its back in its proper place in 2014.

GreatKenji
01-12-2013, 07:52 AM
Yes, you both are right, and I hope the gunbarrels returns at the beginning of the next film, by the way, what's the real chance for Skyfall to win the best score Academy award? And correct me if am I wrong, but this is the second time a Bond score is nominated, right? And also the second time a Bond title song is nominated as well, isn't it?

I don't think Newman will win. However, the Academy may feel they've shortchanged Bond in 50 years and may let Newman win for this reason alone.

Speaking of Skyfall - an expanded edition is on the way :) Do not expect much; expanded is perhaps too strong a term, but deluxe edition might be a better term!

Is this 'deluxe' version, one of yours KF? Or do you mean there is an expanded official release coming soon? Either is good.
Really all I need is a rip of the Gunbarrell/Bond Theme and the end credits music & possibly the music when the helicopter arrive at Silva's island. Is much else missing from the CD?

I had wondered that with the score being Oscar nominated, I wonder what the chances are of an FYC expanded/complete release?

Grubbuts

I think Newman's actually in with a decent chance. There's some extremely strong competition - excepting maybe Hans Zimmer you have four other modern heavyweights and regular contributors to Hollywood soundtrack-making. But Newman, someone who traditionally does drama lends an element of what might be perceived as class by the Academy (they're such fuddy-duddies). The Skyfall score could be the dark horse. Either way, it's good that both the song and the score have at least been recognised by this venerable institution after the Bond series being mostly ignored for so many years.

KaFaraqGatri

No, no official release. It wouldn't happen that quickly, and most likely never would :)

There is quite a bit of music missing from the album - some cues are truncated, but the essence of them is there. I guess album time was an issue, or perhaps Newman didn't like how they played away from the film. As for actual cues missing, there's maybe three or four missing entirely (but don't quote me on that, I don't know it as well as the other scores).

My version is 94 mins with no FX (of course). I'll be uploading it later, I am sure the talented folk here can make some artwork for it. However, I'll be revisiting this in future, so this isn't definitive. I'll post a better version later in the year, possibly in FLAC and MP3.

Thank you for the expanded edition of Skyfall

This is my first taste of the soundtrack as the official release is still sealed and i decided not to listern to the score until after i've seen the film

having now seen the film a few times, it is far easier to listern to the score as I caN picture what has happened in the film, where in the past, i've listerned to the scores before seeing the film and said "yuk"

And for Golden Globe award winner song which I don't know it is first Bond song that win or not, and also for Newman's nominee score at, which if it win (at rarely chance) will not at all surprise for a long long history of Bond's music at Oscar should recognize.

marvin hamlisch's TSWLM score was the 1st oscar nod - lost to star wars, and rightfully so. no other score in '77 could hold a candle to it. not sure about 1st time a bond songwas nominated..i think it was the same film

I don't think Newman will win. However, the Academy may feel they've shortchanged Bond in 50 years and may let Newman win for this reason alone.

it would make sense that a bond film won a best score oscar, if anything. to me the music is what makes the films breathe. it's just a shame that they never saw fit to award barry for OHMSS or maybe AVTAK, but at least he was recognized for dances with wolves and some other great scores

i haven't had a chance to hear life of pi or argo yet, but among the three i've listened to, anna karenina sounded like a shoe-in. desplat seems to be an academy favorite in recent years, although because this may be one of williams' final scores, it wouldn't surprise me if he got the award. skyfall is a definite darkhorse

personally, i thought lincoln was an average williams score. it sounded similar to his other historical epic scores. i definitely hear some jfk and even a pinch of amistad in there. nothing new, nothing award-worthy.

It's not that great, Ray, but thank you! :) The album is a rerecording anyway, so despite being the same basic tune its different in orchestration. So I did the best with what I had.
