Well, 1988 is an important year for these two fights, because three of the four soundtracks were released at that time. Naoki Kodaka is also conspicuous, since he composed half of the competing scores. Let's see if he can get into the semifinals...
Quarterfinals, Fight 1
Batman: Return of the Joker (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOfrNNIdZP0)
by Naoki Kodaka, Hara Nobuyuki, and Shinichi Seya (1991)
- Fun Fact: This game had three iterations: the NES version, a remake for the Genesis called Revenge of the Joker, and a remake for the SNES that was never released. There was also a Game Boy game with the same name, although its gameplay was completely different.
- Previously beat: Solstice, Darkwing Duck, Tetris
vs.
Final Fantasy II (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zeY26bH2Sn0)
by Nobuo Uematsu (1988)
- Fun Fact: Everyone knows that this game was not released in North America, which is why Final Fantasy IV was called Final Fantasy II here. What you may not know, though, is that Final Fantasy II on the NES was supposed to be released in North America and was in the process of being translated for several years before the arrival of the Super Nintendo and the Japanese release of Final Fantasy IV led Square to give up on the project, believing they had taken too long and no one would care anymore.
- Previously beat: Metal Gear, Maniac Mansion, Gradius
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Quarterfinals, Fight 2
Blaster Master (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P-Ebsa_Pc9U)
by Naoki Kodaka (1988)
- Fun Fact: Blaster Master, like several other NES games, was novelized (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Complete_set_of_Worlds_of_Power_books.JPG) as part of the Worlds of Power book series by Peter Lerangis and others. Supposedly, Blaster Master was the most difficult to turn into a novel, though, because there isnt much of a plot between the opening scene and the ending one. Thus, Lerangis had to come up with details that were not in the game, and Sunsoft subsequently made that the canon backstory for the games sequel, Blaster Master: Blasting Againthe only time one of the Worlds of Power novelizations was given canonical status.
- Previously beat: Bucky O'Hare, Chip n' Dale's Rescue Rangers, Silver Surfer
vs.
Mega Man 2 (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7MiDyPEw_k)
by Takashi Tateishi, Manami Matsumae, Yoshihiro Sakaguchi (1988)
- Fun Fact: Mega Man 2 was also novelized by Scholastic in 1990, and in the story Mega Man is accidentally turned into a human.
- Previously beat: Legend of Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, Journey to Silius, Battle of Olympus
My votes are for Batman: Return of the Joker and Mega Man 2.

Final Fantasy II (5-3) and Mega Man 2 (5-4) are moving on. And weve got two spots left for songs to join them
Quarterfinals, Fight 3
Metroid (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZnQT97A2kk)
by Hirokazu Hip Tanaka (1986)
- Fun Fact: Just as Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda were developed side by side with much of the same staff (composer included), Metroid and Kid Icarus were created in tandem by Gunpei Yokoi, Hip Tanaka, and many others on the Nintendo R&D1 team.
- Previously beat: Batman, Dr. Mario, Castlevania III
vs.
Mega Man 3 (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hCL2lMUP_U4)
by Yasuaki Bun Bun Fujita (1990)
- Fun Fact: Bun Bun was also part of Alph Lyla, Capcoms in-house band that included Yoko Shimomura, Junko Tamiya, and Manami Gotoh who together composed the music for Street Fighter II, Breath of Fire, and Final Fight II.
- Previously beat: Gremlins 2, Ninja Gaiden, Life Force
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Quarterfinals, Fight 4
Contra (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFwGgFOEZb4)
by Hidenori Maezawa (1987)
- Fun Fact: Speed Demos Archive recently did a fundraiser that netted $10,000 for CARE, an organization that fights poverty, and one of the featured speedruns from this event was Freddy Frezy_Man Anderssons incredible (and for some reason shirtless) annihilation of Contra in two (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=beoUNYvixlo#t=03m54s) parts (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NH4nR58j-PY).
- Previously beat: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: The Arcade Game, Castlevania II, Super Mario Bros. 3
vs.
Final Fantasy III (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ksme4TBFmMg)
by Nobuo Uematsu (1990)
- Fun Fact: Designer Hiromichi Tanaka said that an English version of the game was not released in the early 90s because Square was scared that the brand-new Super Nintendo would immediately obsolete all games for previous consoles, drying up the market for 8-bit games. Consequently, Square put all of its resources towards making a new 16-bit game instead of translating an old 8-bit one. Tanaka admits that in hindsight this was pretty silly.
- Previously beat: Wizards and Warriors II, Guardian Legend, Castlevania
I'll put my votes in a separate post to keep things from getting too cluttered.

I think Mega Man 3 gives you about all you could ask for from an NES soundtrack and represents some of the best music for the console. However, my first vote is going to Metroid by a tiny margin, because I feel its music does a better job of setting a variety of moods that are specific to the story. I'm still not convinced that criteria negates the fact that Mega Man 3, arguably, has more and better songs. But I think Metroid deserves at least one vote here because what it attempted to do with its soundtrack is historically important to video games. The model that Super Mario Bros. set out and that was taken to new heights by the Mega Man games was unchallenged until Metroid came out, and I think that's worth something.
My second vote is for Contra because it immediately made me want to play the game again. I could listen to Final Fantasy III's soundtrack over and over and sit back and appreciate it, but I think what soft-spoken Maezawa (
http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3172388) accomplished is still compellingnot just interesting music, but music that profoundly influences the player's emotional state during the entirety of the game.

So its Metroid (5-4) and Contra (6-3) filling in those last two spots. Lets get the semifinals started!
Semifinals, Fight 1
Mega Man 2 (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7MiDyPEw_k)
by Takashi Tateishi, Manami Matsumae, Yoshihiro Sakaguchi (1988)
- Fun Fact: Mega Man 2 was novelized by Scholastic in 1990, and in the story Mega Man is accidentally turned into a human.
- Previously beat: Legend of Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, Journey to Silius, Battle of Olympus, Blaster Master
The opinions of anonymous video game music critics on the internet don't necessarily hold any weight, but it says something that if you google "best NES soundtrack" all (
http://good-evil.net/features/top-30-nes-soundtracks-02-mega-man-2) of (
http://www.epinions.com/content_5005418628) these (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bCI8_rA7rDI) guys (
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=216723) show up in the first pages of results with Mega Man 2 in their Top 10. In fact, the soundtrack is so popular that while you're looking through such a list you're probably waiting for Mega Man 2 to make an appearance, because you know it's coming. Why? One reason is the dramatic opening music, which accelerates through an arpeggiated chord progression as the camera tilts up a building until, simultaneously, Mega Man appears at the top and a heavy-metal-ready guitar riff erupts. Another is the infamous Wily Stage 1 music, which pairs the dramatic visuals of a monstrous robotic dragon with a piece that is driving, mysterious, exciting, anxious, sad, and heroic all at the same. It'd be tempting to go on and on about just this song and how, when the main melody gives way at the 22-second mark to a high-pitched guitar sound with a faux-reverb effect, a split occurs between the hyperactive bass line and much slower guitar that is unnerving. However, I'd do a disservice to the rest of the soundtrack if I didn't at least mention the rocking bass line of Flash Man, the twisting and branching second melodic line in Metal Man (which does so much to set the mood for the stage), the bubbly ascending bass line in Bubble Man, and the gorgeous closing credits music, which re-casts a game about a robot boy blowing up evil machines into something tragic and, ultimately, futile. After watching Mega Man take the long and lonely journey home, finally putting down his helmet to walk into his cottage, the music suggests both his exhaustion and his awareness that the battles with Wily aren't over. That's pretty complicated for an 8-bit composition. This is probably the most remixed NES soundtrack, it was the first vgm video Garudoh ever made, and it certainly deserves a place here among the final four. But does it deserve to be #1?
vs.
Final Fantasy II (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zeY26bH2Sn0)
by Nobuo Uematsu (1988)
- Fun Fact: Final Fantasy II on the NES was actually supposed to be released in North America. It was in the process of being translated for several years before Square decided things were taking too long and re-focused their energy on making Final Fantasy IV for the Super Nintendo.
- Previously beat: Metal Gear, Maniac Mansion, Gradius, Batman: Return of the Joker
Square's second effort introduced chocobos and Cid and secondary playable characters and scripted deaths and many other elements that built upon the mythology and depth of the Final Fantasy franchise. Consequently, Uematsu had to step up his game, and boy did he. One of the first things to notice about this soundtrack is the inclusion of several, short mood pieces like Escape, Emperor's Rebirth, and Waltzwhich are notable for their attempt to make the music respond better to the actual events in the game. Also worth mentioning in this category is Revivification (
http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOSTation#p/c/47A62474675BFB4F/2/vme03BOxZEE), which comes back in the finale and evolves into a lovely and regal melody. Re-arranging the centerpiece songs in a grand ending medley, of course, is something Uematsu went on to do many more times to great effect. But that trend started here. Another thing to notice is the major step forward in this game's main theme. The music from FFI primarily goes for one moodhappiness, sadness, dangerand that's not a criticism. But try to describe what mood is conveyed in this game's main theme. The plunking bass line is insistent. The melody is somber, almost sleepy. The piece suggests something about the wandering you'll do, but also something of the slowness and weariness of fighting everywhere you go. As contrast, the battle music picks up the pace and doesn't make each individual fight seem like a major exercise in exhaustion. But when you come back out of that fight, it's like having the adrenaline wear off. It's an interesting choice, and a very good song. Of course, there's also the bombastic Imperial Army Theme, the stately Rebel Army Theme, the slip-sliding melody in Ancient Castle, and the awesome, kinetic, climbing music for the Magician's Tower (
http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOSTation#p/c/47A62474675BFB4F/9/p0xuTqvQ01U), which ends in a spooky, twirling fade-out. Suffice it to say, this is an important turning point for Uematsu and the Final Fantasy series.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Semifinals, Fight 2
Contra (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFwGgFOEZb4)
by Hidenori Maezawa (1987)
- Fun Fact: In an interview with 1up.com in 2007, Maezawa (
http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3172388) was confronted with his Contra compositions and asked what he thought about them now, 20 years after the fact.
- Previously beat: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: The Arcade Game, Castlevania II, Super Mario Bros. 3, Final Fantasy III
I remember the first time I heard the Minibosses cover of the Stage 1 music. It was probably the first time I encountered something from my childhood stripped of sentimentality and nostalgia. What was left was simply a kick-ass rock song. And whether that was the bands intention or not doesnt matter. The consequence was that I discovered why I spent so many hours playing a cruelly difficult game. Hidenori Maezawa's acrobatic harmonic lines are compelling to the point that its hard to stop listening to the music over and over again. Though the game is blatantly derivative of Rambo, Predator, and Alienshugely popular movies at the timethe music resists comparison to a lot of other soundtracks from the era. Listen to any of the songs from the game and you feel like the guy in the logo for Maxell (

). Jungle is awesome. Base is awesome. Base Boss is awesome. Waterfall is awesome. Snow Field is awesome. Energy Zone is awesome. Alien Lair is awesome. Ending is awesome. And with each song, the busyness of the hi-hat-driven percussion makes the melody feel that much more intense. You start to feel like the notes are firing off as fast as your bullets, and the end result is music that profoundly influences your emotional state from the beginning of the game to the end. However, the most satisfying pieces may just be the shortest ones. Listen to the six-second-long title screen music (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9dQYvS0uhkw), ending in an explosion, or the five-second-long stage clear music (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5bmt4QipjEI), and tell me you don't want to light a cigarette and go kick some ass. Those are the moments where we need one of NucleaRaptor's jpegs (
http://forums.ffshrine.org/showpost.php?p=1370837&postcount=87) (nsfw).
vs.
Metroid (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZnQT97A2kk)
by Hirokazu Hip Tanaka (1986)
- Fun Fact: Just as Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda were developed side by side with much of the same staff (composer included), Metroid and Kid Icarus were created in tandem by Gunpei Yokoi, Hip Tanaka, and many others on the Nintendo R&D1 team.
- Previously beat: Batman, Dr. Mario, Castlevania III, Mega Man 3
Metroid's title theme is one of my all-time favorite pieces of video game music. Nothing about it is what you'd expect. Just that deep, fuzzy floom sound, for instance, isn't a single gravelly note. It's actually two tones that start by playing D, but quickly separate into D and A at the bottom before pairing up againcreating just enough unevenness to keep you unsettled. On top of that is the surprisingly sparse, scary motif that suddenly unwinds after thirty seconds into a beautiful descending melody, taking on extra layers in the repetition before ascending into a graceful, heroic third act that drops us right back down into the floom. What a hell of a piece to start the game with, and the visuals match it with a barren yellowish-brown landscape, wide-open space behind that, and the eerily glowing letters of the game's title. You can see where Willow (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R580p4A5xGo) took its inspiration, as well as so many othersmaybe even Final Fantasy VI (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDH4pLa7TI0), too. The similarities really aren't that superficial, but that's another piece of writing altogether. With the title music alone, I'd say that Metroid's historic importance to video game music would qualify it for a high place in our rumble. But that would ignore all of the other stand-out tracks, like Brinstar with its marching beat and burbling bass notes that create a wonderful call-and-response befitting the beginning of a heroic journey. That mood doesn't prevail over the entire soundtrack, though, and Norfair is a good example of why people always compliment this soundtrack's atmosphere. Slow, stop-start, and heavy on the back-end of the beat, Norfair sounds like it takes place deep in the earth, and it does. The percussion even sounds like a pick hitting rock. This trend continues as the player moves deeper into the planet. Silence takes us straight into a catacomb, where a flutter of notes and a motif reminiscent of the first part of the title screen's melody is the closest you get to a song. Tracks like these are so unnerving that it's an aural shock when you walk into Kraid's chamber and get a full-on, demonic, baroque organ invention perfectly suited to the hellish encounter you're about to have. And that's how Tanaka wanted it. He wanted melodies to become so scarce that they were surprises and treats that instantly ratcheted up the emotion for the player, and he absolutely succeeded. The question, though, is if this little soundtrack did enough in 8 tracks to earn it a place in the finals. We'll see...

And the winner of the NES Soundtracks battle is
Mega Man 2 (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A4BEe_9pQl0&feature=PlayList&p=B96D4BF7F67C170B&index=0)!
by Takashi Tateishi, Manami Matsumae, and Yoshihiro Sakaguchi (1988)
It says something that if you google "best NES soundtrack," tons of sites immediately show up in the results with Mega Man 2 in their Top 10. In fact, the soundtrack is so popular that while you're looking through such a list you're probably waiting for Mega Man 2 to make an appearance. Why? One reason is the dramatic opening music, which accelerates through an arpeggiated chord progression as the camera tilts up a building until, simultaneously, Mega Man appears at the top and a heavy-metal guitar riff erupts. Another is the infamous Wily Stage 1 music, which pairs the dramatic visuals of a monstrous robotic dragon with a piece that is driving, mysterious, exciting, anxious, sad, and heroic all at the same. It'd be tempting to go on and on about just this song and how, when the main melody gives way at the 22-second mark to a high-pitched guitar with a faux-reverb effect, a split occurs between the hyperactive bass-line and much slower guitar that is unnerving. However, I'd do a disservice to the rest of the soundtrack if I didn't at least mention the thumping bass-line of Flash Man, the twisting and branching second melodic line in Metal Man, the appropriately bubbly ascending bass-line in Bubble Man, and the gorgeous closing credits music, which re-casts a game about a robot boy blowing up evil machines into something tragic and, ultimately, futile. After watching Mega Man take the long and lonely walk home, finally putting down his helmet to walk into his cottage, the music suggests both his exhaustion and his awareness that the battles with Wily aren't over. That's pretty complicated for an 8-bit composition. This is probably the most remixed NES soundtrack, it was the first vgm video Garudoh ever made, and it deserves this recognition as arguably the greatest soundtrack for the NES.
Fun Fact: Mega Man 2 was novelized (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Complete_set_of_Worlds_of_Power_books.JPG) by Scholastic in 1990, and in the story Mega Man is accidentally turned into a human.
Record: 10-2, 10-1, 11-1, 5-4, 6-4, 9-2
Well, that was another great battle. Thanks to all of you who voted! I hope you enjoyed it.
Well vote on the next battle(s) very soon.
Just a reminder: if you have an idea for a theme that youd like to do, shoot me a PM. Im open to anything. Also, you can see and make suggestions on the themes weve already worked on at our VGM Rumble Group, found here (

Its that time again. After five months, the slate has been wiped clean, and we are ready to start the next rumble(s). After looking at the below list, please put whether you want to do one rumble or two and which themes youd be interested in doing. Its better to put several down, so that I know which theme would appeal to the largest number of people. As always, majority rules.

Metal Gear would be fun. As for a console rumble, I have closer ties to Sega, but SNES is near and dear, too... so whichever one it would end up being would be fine, but I do enjoy the console rumbles.

Hey guys,
Metal Gear came out the favorite.
But for the second rumble, we've got a tie between the SNES and Genesis. In total, both were mentioned 5 times. So to try to figure out a winner, I looked to see if one had more "first choice" votes. The answer is no... Both have only one definitive, unequivocal vote. All of the rest of the voters were fine either way. I tried to break the tie by looking at the votes for other evidence of preferences, but any way you slice this, it's a tie.
My solution (for now) is to let this keep running until tomorrow. If we don't have any more votes, I guess I'll flip a coin. Does that seem fair?

Hmm... Well, we tied up again between SNES and Genesis, which is good in that both rumbles proved they have a lot of supporters and bad in that neither could edge out the other and make this decision easy. Personally, I don't even know which I'd choose, because I'm interested in both. So I went with a "Best of 5" series of coin flips. That seemed like the most fair thing to do in this situation, and the result?
SNES won.
I'm sure we'll see a Genesis rumble in the near future, though, as well as the other rumbles, too. The most gratifying part of this vote was that every theme got support from more than one person. Looks like we've got a good bank of ideas, and for that I thank you all for making the requests.
So let's start finalizing the song lists! Like last time, we'll do them one at a time to keep things manageable. First up is the prospective list of Metal Gear songs. Ill give this a day, and then we'll take a day to finalize the SNES list (
http://forums.ffshrine.org/group.php?groupid=20), and then we'll start the rumbles. Take a look at the list and let me know if you want to make any changes. As always, thanks for your help!

I would change DOOM for something else in the SNES, I don't know, I've never saw the SNES version of DOOM, but I don't think that the music from DOOM deserves to be in a SNES rumble, Doom is more like a PC classic, I see better things or should I say, more proper things in the leftovers.
I see Front Mission & Tactics Ogre there for example.

Tactics Ogre sounds fine to me. I liked Front Mission's music, but never played DOOM for the SNES or Tactics Ogre. So, I will go for the one that I don't know in hopes that it can stand up to some of the big names from SNES.

Front Mission's music fits the game perfectly. But when I listened to it outside of the game (way back when) I found it a little boring. I thought Tactics Ogre, on the other hand, was too slow and overbearing when I was playing the game. But taken by itself, I found it much more enjoyable.
That's why I was leaning towards Tactics Ogre. But there's a problem. I can't find the OST anywhere on YouTube (this playlist (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S5UeKvTh3Sc&feature=PlayList&p=65D2C5A6BFCF9DCC&index=0) with a mere 7 tracks was the best I could come up with), whereas Front Mission is easily available via one of Garudoh's videos (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=riS1onjTVm8).
Given that information, do you all still want to go with Tactics Ogre at the cost of only having a small sample of it to judge? Or would you rather do Front Mission (assuming there are no objections to switching out DOOM)?

SNES hmm... I played Tactics Ogre long time ago, so I can't remember the music. The only two other games that I remember liking the music are "Energy Breaker" and "Super Robot Wars: Lord of the Elemental" and there's only a few songs that I like from "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" & "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie"
arthurgolden
03-12-2010, 08:59 PM
Yeah, I agree that Energy Breaker is a good soundtrack. SRW: Lord of the Elemental I don't know. But the problem with both of them is that neither is available on YouTube. For Energy Breaker there's one or two songs, and for SRW there's practically nothing.
So I still think the task here is to decide whether Tactics Ogre or Front Mission is going to replace DOOM--since both of them are readily available for those who haven't heard them before. Front Mission has most of the soundtrack available on YouTube. Tactics Ogre, on the other hand, has a limited selection--but maybe enough to give an impression of the whole thing.

Welcome back, Smarty. :)
Will Lost Vikings be on genesis list later also? I know it from genesis/mega drive and to be honest I didn't even knew this game was also on SNES, before seeing the list .
Lost Vikings is only on the SNES rumble right now. I'm trying to keep the games exclusive to one list or the other, although if you want to add it to the Genesis list, I'm open to that. The SNES version is actually the original version, which is what they used to port the game to DOS, Amiga, Genesis, and eventually other platforms, too.
Tactics Ogre sounds fine to me.
I wasn't really into Front Mission.
Tactics Ogre for Doom sounds like a fair exchange to me.
Since we have 6 nominations to replace DOOM and it seems like no has a problem with Tactics Ogre--just maybe other soundtracks they also like--I'm going to go ahead and make the switch to Tactics Ogre now. We'll start soon.

One difference youll notice: Im now trying to include the composer for every soundtrack we listen to, since down the road Im hoping to do a big composer-versus-composer rumble and this seems like an easy way to familiarize ourselves with these names. It gets a little crazy with the Metal Gear series, though, so prepare yourself. For example, MGS4 is weird for having only four composers.

Ahh, I guess you're right. There's barely enough space for exclusives anyway, so I won't ask for that.

Bah, considering all the filler options in this tournament, how can you put two games with highly regarded soundtracks against each other in the first round? Super Mario RPG has a better soundtrack than any game that has won the first round so far. Unfortunately Chrono Trigger has the best soundtrack ever recorded.

I didn't expect to vote against Encounter this early, but I just fell in love with Night Fall
As for SNES, easily Soul Blazer
Metal Gear Solid – Encounter
Damn, why do my favorite SNES soundtracks keep ending up head to head in the first round? Sigh...
Soul Blazer
Ryuji Sasai's work on Final Fantasy Legend 3 for the Gameboy was better anyway. :P

Never heard Treasure Hunter G before, it sounds AMAZING!
It's a fun game (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treasure_Hunter_G), too. I recommend it if you're looking for a good SNES RPG.
Sidenote: This has nothing to do with our current rumble, but I've been a fan of Jonathan Dunn's SNES Waterworld soundtrack since I played the game (the game is terrible; the soundtrack is good). However, the music hasn't been available online until recently. I searched the other night and finally found postings of Shop (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4JLCRHV5H4&feature=related) and Mission 1 (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sp7xqhunH88), besides Diving (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0H5YoFv09uQ), which we heard back in our Aquatic Themes Rumble. Hope you enjoy.
