This place definitely has one of the weirdest communities on the Internet. Considering how many people hang out here that must be really into video game music, there is surprisingly very little discussion about said subject happening. Maybe that was different a few years ago, but right now it definitely feels like the vast majority of users is here exclusively for the free downloads.

When I first got here back in '06, there was a lot more discussion going on, a lot more threads, a lot more active people. Now, most people have left and there seems to be a very small core group of us left that are here and in the general discussion thread. The site constantly going down certainly isn't helping.
Also, the videos worked for me, so it might be a location thing for you unfortunately.

At this thread's peak, we were getting about 15 posts per fight. Not a huge number. But, like feral said, there were also many other active rumbles and discussion threads and many high-profile members of the community participating. So it's not like a significant percentage of the 800,000 registered users on this site were ever involved in video game music discussion, but relative to our own history there's been a big change. In the same breath, we are one of the longest-running and most active discussion threads in all of the forums. We may be slimmed down this particular second, but we have had a consistent influx of new participants for almost a decade, which is more than almost any other thread can claim. I'm proud of that achievement and glad we're still keeping it going for as long as people find it interesting.
While we're on the subject, though, and this supports nx666's comment: The thing that has always perplexed me is that this thread averages 50 views per post--50 views--and that has held true for half a decade, yet we've never had anywhere near that many people voting. Who are all of those other people? Why don't they post? I'll never understand it.
On the subject of the Create soundtrack, it is available on iTunes (
https://itunes.apple.com/gb/album/create-original-video-game/id399891212) if you have an account and, worst case scenario, as thirty-second clips on Amazon (
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004BUD6WE/ref=dm_ws_sp_ps_dp).
Finally, for my votes. I can't believe we're already in the semifinals for the C64 rumble (!).

I don't think you need any 'qualification' to vote here. Just listen to the sample tracks and then pick whichever soundtrack appeals to you more. There is is no 'right' choice and in the end (imo) this is more about discovering new music anyway.

Congratulations to Jeroen Tel, definitely a worthy winner. Since there is nothing else to post for this round, here are a few other Tel tracks that didn't quite make the cut.
Golden Axe: Wilderness Theme (

Turbo Outrun: Title Screen (
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQNT9Whg4r4) - Another Sega arcade port, but this theme is an original Tel piece. A pretty impressive hip hop track with heavy use of samples.
Aspar Grand Prix (

Supremacy (

And for this you can simply copy and paste the values from column A, which generates the two text entries including all the necessary formatting. I wish everything in life was that simple!
On a related note, we might want to think about preparing another rumble to run alongside the current one.

Agreed. It lost to Sly Cooper, which has won against strong competition the whole way.
Has sakimoto-san had any other albums in this rumble?
It seems shocking to say, but no. Most of the music he made during the 7th Gen was for handheld, arcade, mobile, and e-shop games or for games where he's only one of a huge coalition of composers. If you're hungry for more, though, give Dragon's Crown (
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=79ujIRSWQgc&list=PLelmLawxWfAtVjKMmEcHUYmbWuyxXJbIU) a listen.

And with that, we're without a pre-determined rumble theme for the first time in a long time. I believe the Best of David Wise and the Best of Sonic could be ready to go, perhaps with a couple days to allow any final suggestions. We've also had Failure Themes and 90s End Credits Themes as long-standing ideas that could be ready to go. Any feelings towards any of these ideas? What do we want to do?

Wise and Sonic would work for me as well. The one thing I don't like about these two rumbles is that they feature mostly fairly well-known tracks so the chance that I will discover anything new is vanishingly small.
Always prefer two simultaneous to one with double entries.
Me too. But only as long as at least one of them is a single-track rumble. Otherwise you would potentially have to listen to 20 tracks at once which might be a bit much.

For convenience's sake, here are direct links to the proposed selections for the Sonic (
http://forums.ffshrine.org/group.php?discussionid=1132&do=discuss) and David Wise (
http://forums.ffshrine.org/group.php?discussionid=523&do=discuss) rumbles. The Sonic group page offers numerous "leftover," alternate selections as well. Here, too, are the list of games for the Sonic franchise (
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Sonic_the_Hedgehog_video_games) and for David Wise's discography (
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Wise_(composer)) from which the selections have to come. Any suggestions, revisions, or recommendations would be welcome! With the David Wise rumble, the focus should be on soundtracks he made a significant contribution, too, particularly soundtracks where there is at least some information available on what tracks he specifically composed. Unfortunately, that does narrow the options to mostly well-known works. In a few days, if there's general agreement about the selections, I'll get these started.

Team, I'm sorry things have remained quiet over here. I am currently working full time; in the middle of two writing projects, a music project, and an art installation; and attempting to change careers. Things are, uh, a little crazy.
@TheSkeletonMan939: I hear ya. He only composed 9 tracks (
http://vgmdb.net/album/147) for that soundtrack, and they're certainly not the strongest tracks from the game--plus some of them are arrangements of old themes. The tricky part is finding a substantial substitute. I will research more to see what I can come up with.
As a thank you for everyone's patience, here are David Wise's three tracks from the soundtrack to the upcoming game Yooka-Laylee: Jungle Challenge (
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JRxl6KGkaDM), Jungle Minecart (
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pV1xWQ5Ka40&t=467s), and Glacier Minecart (
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iKPoDi2BVAM).
Also, those who compose may be interested to know that Jeremy Soule, with Roland, has developed a 24-bit "communication technology" called Rainlink that translates inputs on controller to a cloud-based VST library. They seem to intend it to replace MIDI as a higher-res option. Their promos also repeatedly mention its ability to capture subtle articulations, though I couldn't find a clear example of this. The numbers support their assertions of an epochal change to music technology; their audio doesn't yet. :-\
More soon.

I saw that too. I'm not a composer but his claims of how earth-shattering the project is interest me. Soule claims that new instruments and updates will happen every week or so, so perhaps the offerings will become more unique to you in the near future.
No rush mate. Been poking my head into this place for 13 years, can't imagine I'll ever completely forget about it.

I have spent quite a bit of time on an awful lot of forums, and I've never seen a transition as bizarre as FFShrine.
General Discussion evolved from a benign forum for gamers to a shock-value focused mini 4chan to a safe space where fundamentalist Christians and the alt-right could discuss politics and their obsession with literally Mickey Mouse.
I wonder if the latter group is aware that the site is owned by a politically active trans who was once the target of a smear campaign by Steve Bannon and co.

That "latter group" can largely be attributed to one certain member here. The pool of users who actually use GD regularly is so small that his rapid-fire posting casts a shadow over the community at large.
(I say this knowing that Shad probably counts me as one of the creepers).
Frankly I just got a huge kick out of harassing James Pedolord Sullivan, because he's an enormous piece of shit and I could prompt him to waste his entire evening going on huge hate rants just by chucking a few throwaway troll lines at him.
Clonemaster is a waste of oxygen and I have no preconceived notion of anyone else there besides weird Disney fetish + guilt by association. You're just that guy with a turtle avatar.

Trying to foster anything resembling a real discussion for long in GD is usually not worth the effort... it's usually the same group of people adding legitimate input, and the same group of people making half-hearted shitposts. It's an ocean of piss.

No worries, a lot of the music we have on here I've never heard or played, so I don't rely on memories or nostalgia. I will say it is quite hard sometimes to keep nostalgia from winning when it's a beloved game or soundtrack up against one that is unknown to you beforehand.

Haha yeah, I was certainly shocked when I saw Deus Ex Human Revolution lost out so early on in the last rumble, that may have been my winner... but what I was trying to say was that this "Sequencer & MIDI" genre (that I've had to google), modern games rarely use that style so I'm not that familiar with it and can't really appreciate it as much as someone who has grown up listening to it if that makes any sense. Still I'll give it my best shot and stick with it, hopefully I'll find something that I really like :) I noticed that a lot of the previous rumbles generally featured older games too so I'm not complaining, just will take some getting used to!

In these rumbles I always look most forward to music I haven't heard yet. And even if it doesn't become my favorite soundtrack ever, at least I have expanded my horizon a little bit. We will need to prepare a new rumble pretty soon. Why don't you suggest a topic, this could be either something you want to learn more about, or music you would like to introduce to the rest of us?
'Sequencer & MIDI', is that really how people refer to 'old' video game music these days? I bet the Deus Ex soundtrack was made with sequencer & MIDI as well, and so is the majority of modern game soundtracks.

I do feel the same, I hope that I haven't said anything you've taken the wrong way! I've loved taking part in these rumbles so far and I have discovered a whole load of new music from it that I'm really grateful for, I think this is the only place I've really been able to find good video game music discussion too. I'm open to suggesting some ideas, that sounds like a nice idea, I'll give some thought to it :)
That genre was just what I found on a music website I use that describes video game music generally pre-2000, I know it was quite a generalisation, but with the exception of a few recent indie games like Undertale or Stardew Valley, most games these days sound a lot different to 'old' video game music. The original Deus Ex composed by Alexander Brandon certainly falls under the 'old' music (and I do love that soundtrack) but I was thinking more towards the modern sound of the new games as opposed to the method of how they were created. I don't mean to make it sound so confusing!

Ah, that makes sense, I understand now. I have no trouble with the MIDI tracks, but I did have some problems with the C64 rumble. At some points in the beginning I was basically trying to figure out which one sounded more like music and less like noises mashed together! So, I can see how it can take some getting used to if you didn't grow up it.

I think there are three separate conversations happening here. One contains thoughts limited to the selections from the first fight. One contains thoughts about the conventions and limitations of all video game music made before faithful symphonic recordings were mainstream. And one raises the question of how to keep the rumble compelling for a diverse audience. All are interesting conversations to be had. I think I can add some context to help with the first and would like to reinforce what’s already been said in the other two.
1) Undoubtedly, Wise went for a minimalist style on Wizards & Warriors. That's not merely because of the technological limitations. These are pared down compositions relative to other contemporaneous NES soundtracks. The praise they're given often relates to their catchy melodies, and they are commonly included in discussions of David Wise's best work because of those melodies. But they're also probably not best experienced in 3:00 continuous loops, as our uploader has chosen to present them. Inevitably, that's going to get tiresome. Considering NES music was meant to be looped, there's a discussion to be had as to whether or not these should stay fresh for 3:00. We can qualify the discussion of the Diddy Kong Racing soundtrack as well, though the genre of its game and therefore the function and emphases of the music are different. It is repetitive, it's supposed to play an unobtrusive supporting role to the action of the game, but maybe we're saying the resulting compositions don't break out of their initial terms enough to hold up as standalone tracks.
2) As for the second conversation, my conviction is that video game music's history is full of artistically valid, still compelling compositions despite the technology used to create them. That doesn't mean the technology doesn't pose an obstacle (and remixes are not only valid in my mind, but crucial in keeping video game music’s history alive). But I strongly prefer to hear many of those compositions in their original form despite the obstacle because the technology, as much as the music, speaks to video game music's importance as a (perhaps) unique form of artistic expression as well as its relationship to the artistic, economic, and political tensions of the late-20th century forward. For our members who haven't grown up accustomed to the peculiarities and charms of the video game generations we’ll cover in these two particular rumbles, thank you for taking this ride with us, and I think I can promise--or at least I can promise there's a great likelihood--that you're going to hear something you like along the way, even if the presentation takes some getting used to.
3) My conviction is also that video game music can be appreciated without playing the accompanying games. I've helped design 29 of the 32 rumbles we've had. I'd guess I haven't ever played something like 85% of the games and hadn't ever heard something like 50% of the music before researching it. I think the desire to hear something new is what drives all of us. Because of that shared desire and because I'm one person with my own preferences, I'd strongly, strongly, strongly prefer not to be the sole architect of any rumble. This community is better if there are a lot of voices involved in planning. So to echo nx666 in addressing everyone, please feel free to add your voice to the group page (
http://forums.ffshrine.org/group.php?groupid=20) where the rumbles are designed, drafted, and finalized. We're doing a David Wise and Sonic rumble because someone requested that we do them. We just did a Best of the 7th Generation rumble because someone requested that we do one. If you look on the "Suggest Future Rumble Themes here" post on the group page, you'll see this history of collaboration going back to 2010. Let's get some new ideas going.
For great justice. New fight by the end of the day.

Tune is a complete Miss, still a pretty decent OST all in all...
Would it have been something like Sugar Lane (
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HuHHtePkSd4) or Special Stage (
https://youtu.be/c8c_dpRZhe4)
then i would have needed to give it some serious Thought... :)

Incidentally, if anyone enjoys Tropical Freeze, I highly recommend you check out his work for Yooka-Laylee (

Right. The links should automatically jump to 0:00, 0:24, 6:13, 5:41, and 5:09 in the video. I'm not sure if that works on mobile devices.
