Two early 3D adventures using the Feescape engine. The 8-bit versions were a bit slow, but had incredible atmosphere, which is underlined by their moody soundtracks. Dark Side is yet another dark Wally Beben track that lasts 12 minutes. Driller is only slightly shorter and takes some inspiration from Carpenter's Halloween theme and Phantom of the Opera.

Really? I love looking at old video game music that way. Mostly because it gives you a better understanding of how the song 'works' in terms of sound design. It's also pretty mesmerizing, in an odd sort of way.

The RoboCop soundtrack is mostly known for this iconic theme by Jonathan Dunn, which later also appeared in the Gameboy version of this game and even made it into a commercial (

The R-Type theme is one of Hlsbeck's best-known compositions on the C64 and also completely different from the Amiga version that featured in Shad's rumble. Stefan Hartwig's Turrican theme was originally composed for an intro maker app, published by Digital Marketing. The big battle of Bjerregaard's Stormlord tracks! The title screen music is a fairly long, developing tune, that is somewhat reminiscent of Tel's Cybernoid 1+2. Even longer is the in-game BGM, which is structured like a mini-symphony, consisting of four distinct movements.

The Armalyte soundtrack is a good example of Martin Walker's fairly original style: dark, brooding tunes that are very melodic at the same time. Ben Daglish's Wilderness theme is a different take on creating an atmospheric video game score, combining Far Eastern elements with warbling, almost dubsteb-like, synths.

He was a founding member of Maniacs of Noise and the guy behind their sound drivers, although he also composed for a few games/demos himself. At some point he was hired by Interplay, did a few soundtracks for them and then quickly transitioned into a production role. He is still in the industry though, doing sound design for titles as recent as XCOM 2 or Star Wars: Battlefront.

Rough couple of weeks over here with final exams and a failed hard drive. Sorry I haven't been more of a contributor.
Anyway, the first round of Yamaoka cuts is done, and we've got some interesting trends going. First and foremost, we definitely like the music of the earlier games. All of the entries from Origins (2007), Homecoming (2008), and Shattered Memories (2009) were eliminated in the first round except for "Illusion in Me." Losing that many from the later games is not particularly surprising. But I am surprised that "Illusion in Me," a vocal track, as well as "Tender Sugar" have advanced. We've previously discussed our hang-ups about vocal tracks. I believed these avoided some of the normal pitfalls, and I'm pleased they're still in it. "Dearest" from Contra: Shattered Soldier also made it through, representing one half of the oddball Yamaoka tracks I included (the other being "Catgrass Greenhouse") to show Yamaoka outside his comfort zone. Mostly, though, we're voting on strength versus strength: atmospheric tracks using cleverly manipulated samples, drones playing small intervals to add dissonance, booming reverb to give the instruments scale, and trip-hop and industrial percussion to drive the pieces forward. It's an effective formula he has milked since the first Silent Hill, and in fact Yamaoka has stated he's made every sound heard in the Silent Hill games using just his Line 6 Pod. Pretty impressive, if true.
This has to be Laura Plays the Piano for me. I love the interplay between the sampled cluster and the pianos.
Gordian Tomb - As a sidenote, thanks for the continued commentary. I knew the name Reyn Ouwehand but didn't know he also was part of this Maniacs of Noise group. I'm learning a lot. :D

vs.
Hysteria - In-Game BGM (
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pM-CZVkqtiE), by Fred Gray (1987 Software Projects)
The Hypa-ball title track sounds like it fell out of a 2000s electroclash album, except it was made in 1986. There are quite a few pop/electro songs that feature extremely similar 'bass lines' (like this (
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6hoQ0N6zJJg), or this (
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uco-2V4ytYQ)). Hysteria is one of the better known Fred Gray compositions, and one of the first (if not the first) instances of single-channel echo on the C64.
-------------------------------------------------------
Bonus Demo Track (don't vote for this):
Hi Fi Sky (
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C3LP6AQhaak), by Markus Klein (LMan) (2015 MultiStyle Labs)
Something a little bit more recent and notable for using 2 SID + 3 PCM channels. This barely sounds like a C64 track.

vs.
Startrash - Intro (
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qqyNzonw7go), by Chris Hlsbeck (1989 Rainbow Arts)
When I posted Frightmare in my thread, I called this track the 'Bolero' of SID music. A fairly repetitive rhythmic pattern that is played over 9 minutes, interspersed with subtle, but very effective pieces of melody. The actual 'tune' doesn't start until 2 minutes into the song. Startrash also has a bit of a build-up before the track gets going. This soundtrack is one of the many Hlsbeck/Vaca collaborations from '89.

Hawkeye - Load Next Level (
https://youtu.be/Lb4E2MZFXDE?t=355), by Jeroen Tel (1988 Thalamus)
This is a dolby headphone version of the soundtrack, I couldn't find any video that plays two complete loops of this track.
vs.
Street Surfer - Main Theme (
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ei-7k2wVvYU), by David Whittaker (1986 Mastertronic)
In terms of general sound design, Hawkeye is probably one of the most impressive 8-bit soundtracks. The loading screen features interactive music with a built-in channel mixer (
https://youtu.be/plGgOyDZ9bw?t=93), all the in-game tracks (
https://youtu.be/ASoRpGQ6zfo?t=543) only use one(!) sound channel to allow for additional sfx, and then there is this tune that is played while the next level is loading (
https://youtu.be/ASoRpGQ6zfo?t=483). Street Surfer on the other hand is a prototypical David Whittaker's SID track, complete with arpeggio chords and his trademark rhythm patterns.
-------------------------------------------------------
Bonus Demo Track (don't vote for this):
Deus Ex Machina (
https://youtu.be/G7Py_TyhXYY?t=61), by Mel Croucher (1986 Automata UK)
Is this a demo? Or maybe a game? Deus Ex Machina was one of the very first 'art games' and a very divisive product at that time. Originally released on the Spectrum in '84, the game features no in-game music. Instead, it came with an audio tape with music and narration that is played alongside the program. The script is loosely based on "The Seven Ages of Man" from Shakespeare's As You Like It.

vs.
Sanxion - Loader (Thalamusik) (
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jiXTDZy2Hyg), by Rob Hubbard (1986 Thalamus)
Two classics from two classic C64 composers, both are played while the game is loaded from tape. Comic Bakery is a port of an obscure MSX game by Konami, but this particular piece is exclusive to the C64 version. Thalamusik is one of Hubbard's most famous tracks, composed for a shmup that also featured a pretty nifty cover of Prokofiev's "Dance of the Knights" (

Woohoo! That's actually pretty long for a thread! I did think you meant the shrine itself, too. I know it's been around longer than 7, because I've been on the shrine for longer than 7!
I had to create a new account to get things figured out. It wasn't just a password reset that needed done. It seemed that I had to have my account reactivated. The Last Ninja 2 soundtrack probably doesn't require an introduction, being arguably Matt Gray's most popular work on the C64. Xenophobe is a port of Bally Midway's arcade game that received a completely new soundtrack courtesy of Barry Leitch. I like how the second half of this track basically turns into speed metal, complete with blast beats and guitar solo.

On a related note: we might want to start thinking about a replacement for the Akira Yamaoka rumble, which is going to end in 5 weeks (rough estimate), and we would need something with at least 32 tracks to run alongside the C64 rumble.
I had a look at some of the previous suggestions, the one I could do without too much preparation would be the "Early PC" rumble, provided we narrow down the scope a little bit.
Any ideas?

vs.
Rock'n Roll - Take Off Song (
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7EyZIYVgec), by Ramiro Vaca (1989 Rainbow Arts)
Flimbo's Quest is a cheerful platform game with matching music by Johannes Bjerregaard. Reyn Owehand contributed this theme, played while the game is loading, which is one of his best-known compositions on the C64. Rock'n Roll is another Ramiro Vaca / Chris Hlsbeck collaboration, as the name suggests, this soundtrack consists of a number of rock'n roll tunes.
-------------------------------------------------------
Bonus Demo Track (don't vote for this):
Shades (
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7_RAJQ02eA), by Chris Hlsbeck (1986 64'er/Markt & Technik)
Speaking of Chris Hlsbeck, this is the track that started his career as a musician, and was originally written for a music contest by a German computer magazine. Impressed by the quality of his music, the magazine asked him to write an editor for his sound driver which was published a few months later as a program called Soundmonitor. This, in turn, was the main inspiration for Karsten Obarski's Soundtracker, the father of all music tracker software.

vs.
Forbidden Forest - Title Screen & Main BGM (

Two early proponents of programmatic music in video game soundtracks.
Forbidden Forest was one of the first attempts to create a movie-like experience in a game. The soundtrack, written by game designer Paul Norman, is build around this moody central theme which transitions into more hectic enemy-specific tunes depending on your current encounter. Come to think of it, this might actually be the very first soundtrack for a horror game as well.
Neil Brennan's music is notable for its ingenious sound design and usually very atmospheric in style. This is one of the three themes from Fist 2 that is played during the cave sections of the game.

Laura Plays The Piano - I'm delighted "Laura Plays the Piano" made it this far. In my mind, it is one of Yamaoka's best. Evocative from the first note, which is treated with delay and backed by a rearing, glassy sample, the song gets a pulse from a pitch-bent piano cluster, retreats, then returns with a hole in the middle, and out of that arises a simple, excited, beautiful, and bleak melody—a fitting metaphor for a game series that asks you to look into the void and discover something surprising.

The Unfinished Swan! - This is a good first match-up. I love certain songs on both.
Fun factoid: This is the second-most research I had to do for a theme (after the Composers rumble), as I hadn't heard most of these soundtracks before. Maybe give his early FM soundtracks a listen as well, if you haven't already. Stylistically they are quite different from his later orchestral stuff and you can find many of them in the PC-88, PC-98, and X68000 sections of my thread. Let me know if you need any recommendations.

I'll vote later today, but in the meantime, super weird coincidence:
I was posting in a thread about early music and pulled up a group called Drolls on my last.fm to see which song by them I'd favorited years ago so I could link it. Turned out to be a 16th century Spanish piece called "Pase el Aqua", which unfortunately is not currently uploaded on youtube. (I might fix that tonight.)
It also happens to be the loader theme to Iron Lord (

It's going to blow your mind, but the main theme from that game is based on this (

RoboCop
Double Dragon: Neon - We don't get to feature funny vgm too much around here. This one is amazingly, wonderfully stupid.
Thank you to whomever gave me rep points for keeping things interesting! It makes me not feel so bad for double tieing...twice in a row!
You're welcome. :D
Sidenote: I just saw that Gustavo Santaolalla, composer of The Last of Us, is also co-composing with Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross, and Mogwai for a new documentary produced by Leonardo DiCaprio and Fisher Stevens (i.e., the guy from My Science Project, Short Circuit, Super Mario Bros., and Hackers who apparently has gone on to win a Best Documentary Oscar). That's one motley crew.

Hypa-Ball
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game
Good match-up for both of the themes.
haha, I listened to Scott Pilgrim and immediately thought "this is a total Anamanaguchi ripoff". And then I got to the box art on Giant Contraband Robot. Don't know why this thought didn't come to me when arthur featured a track from that a while back.
Skyrim still wins the match-up for me easily.
The other one's a tough call. I'll take Tetris, would be happy to see either advance though.
