I think it is quite appropriate that there are two songs from games not named Mega Man 2 that could form the championship match. Mega Man 2 has a great soundtrack, but the esteem it is held in compared to other games in the series is unwarranted.

You should be asking how Athens was. I live in Greece ;)
But yeah, it was great. We didn't get to visit the city as much as I would have hoped, but we still saw quite a bit. Theaters, museums and of course the Parthenon were all on our to do list. Overall, I had a great time. It's kind of a dirty city though and you can pretty much see junkies anywhere you look. Definitely a lot more different than what I'm used to.

Well, I'm glad it was a good trip! I had a friend who got a grant to spend last year in Greece writing about her experiences, and so she was there during the riots. She still had nothing but good things to say.

I'm hearing ya Link.
Picking fauvorites from Mega Man or Castlevania is a very weird thing to do, the contruction & evolution of the music of those franchises is mixed, you can see advancements & stagnations at the same time, unlike with RPG franchises like FF, picking fauvorites will always come down to VI, VII or VIII.
The recognition of MM2 is somewhat bizarre & unpleasant to me. It's like the nostalgic title theme touches everybody & they kinda forget the rest of the soundtrack and then by default they forget the rest of the music of the whole franchise.
MM2 best music of the NES? Not by a longshot IMO.
That's my 2 cents on this Final Round.

No we aren't, but in the NES rumble Arthur mentioned that it was the best soundtrack of NES according to "I don't know what magazine" & it was also the winner in our rumble, that's why I mentioned that.

I didn't hear as much of the original sound of the theme as I would have liked, but it was REALLY well done. I added it to my bookmarks!
I definitely think that song could have made it in, especially over Bubble Man; what a travesty including that track was. I mentioned earlier, but I think Blizzard Man (

The recognition of MM2 is somewhat bizarre & unpleasant to me. It's like the nostalgic title theme touches everybody & they kinda forget the rest of the soundtrack and then by default they forget the rest of the music of the whole franchise.
Well, Id argue the title track isnt what makes the soundtrack great (note it isnt even part of the rumble). Certainly, nostalgia can make any soundtrack seem better. But Im not sure thats the case here. Its popular among many, many fans, which is demonstrable through the number of lists that pop up with its soundtrack in the top 10 or 20. If it was just nostalgia clouding peoples judgment, Im not sure the soundtrack would be as popular as it is.
Id argue its the consistent quality across the tracks that make Mega Man 2 so popular. Not only do I think the music is catchy and fun, but also nicely reflects the themes of the stages each song is supposed to represent. Flash Man, Metal Man, Wily Stage 1, and the Ending Theme are all great songs, in my opinion. And several moreCrash Man, Heat Man, Wood Man, Quick Man, and the title themeare very good songs.
I also dont necessarily agree that the other soundtracks are forgotten. Mega Man 2 gets most of the attention, but I see a lot of love for 1, 3, 4, 9, and X as well.
No we aren't, but in the NES rumble Arthur mentioned that it was the best soundtrack of NES according to "I don't know what magazine" & it was also the winner in our rumble, that's why I mentioned that.
To be specific, what I said was that if you google Best NES soundtrack, Mega Man 2 is on a ton of the lists that pop up. Which is true.
I could see an argument that that popularity makes it overrated, because how can any soundtrack live up to that kind of hype? And that may make it annoying to hear about if you only think the soundtrack is okay. That makes sense to me.
But Im not mystified by the popularity either. Could just be a difference in musical tastes.
I definitely think we have a worthy winner this rumble.
I agree. Its surprising to me that the finals of the last two rumbles have led to so much disappointment.
/sigh/
Is it just that well never have a winner that satisfies everyone? Or do people feel bad, undeserving music is getting the spotlight? I dont get it.
I definitely think [Mega Man 4 Title] could have made it in, especially over Bubble Man; what a travesty including that track was. I mentioned earlier, but I think Blizzard Man (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQKiHZVLFAk) could have done VERY well against everything in the Final Four and probably would have slaughtered Flash Man. The other three; kind of a toss up; probably would have lost to Spark Mandrill and Title for sure.
Lets use this frustration constructively. If the system for choosing the songs isnt working, what can we do to improve it?
Blizzard Man was part of a long discussion; people voted for it to be taken off the list after it was already on. A list of cuts was proposed. I asked for people to vouch for any of the cuts that they wanted to remain. Two and a half months passed, and no one said anything about Blizzard Manalthough many more songs were discussed. Eventually, people expressed satisfaction with the intended revisions, and the list was updated.
Is the problem that the group pages are hidden from view and easily forgotten? Or that the rumbles take too long to get going? There were people in the Mega Man discussion who were Rumble regulars at the time but have since left the Shrine. Should we only work on rumble song-lists once the rumble has been decided?
What can I do to improve the system? Im open to suggestions. But to spend a year discussing the song list (10/28/09 11/29/10), accommodating everyone who made suggestions, only to have people feel cheated now is disheartening, to say the least.
Give me something to go with here.

Well, I’d argue the title track isn’t what makes the soundtrack great (note it isn’t even part of the rumble). Certainly, nostalgia can make any soundtrack seem better. I also don’t necessarily agree that the other soundtracks are forgotten. Mega Man 2 gets most of the attention, but I see a lot of love for 1, 3, 4, 9, and X as well.
To be more specific, the Soundtrack of MM2 was also very popular IMO because, from the NES era of MM games, it's the most playable, there are some improvements on the contruction of the game comparing it to MM1, specially regarding the order of exploration of lvl's. Also, IMO it's the easiest one from the NES.
And believe it or not the fame of the game, made the fame of the soundtrack as well. That's maybe one of the biggest reasons that nostalgia hits the spot here.
I won't argue about the consistency or quality of the tracks, while I recognize them to be pretty good & even though my tastes are very particular, I'll have to agree with Link here, the attention it get's it's pretty much unwarranted.
And I've never heard anyone or anywhere giving a good discussion of the music of X series. All I hear is about MM2, it's title track & that's about it.
To be specific, what I said was that if you google “Best NES soundtrack,” Mega Man 2 is on a ton of the lists that pop up. Which is true.
Oh well, xD. But I was close? xD
But I’m not mystified by the popularity either. Could just be a difference in musical tastes.
Probably.
I agree. It’s surprising to me that the finals of the last two rumbles have led to so much disappointment.
You're refering to Genesis & this one, or there's another one too?.
Is it just that we’ll never have a winner that satisfies everyone?
You can't satisfy everyone.
But I think that with CV Rumble everybody was satisfied. I don't know, can't remember.
Or do people feel bad, undeserving music is getting the spotlight? I don’t get it.
This could probably be one of the reasons why some aren't satisfied.
Let’s use this frustration constructively. If the system for choosing the songs isn’t working, what can we do to improve it?

IMO the problem is the lack of feedback. I see that many go to visit & they don't provide with suggestions. There's also the issue that many left the forum or they're not voting anymore.
They probably think that they don't have the proper knowledge to provide with some thoughts. I admit to be one of those.
At the same time there's a lot of new voters as well & that brings a lot of change on the results. Thus the reason why some can be unsatisfied.
So don't feel so terrible if the case is like this with this rumble in particular. It seems to be that this rumble was ready long before many of us arrived to this forum & Since many old voters left & at the same time the number of new voters is thin. I understand why things went like this.
I'll suggest that rumbles should run on a certain order. That's why I said when we voted for Suiko rumble, that we can't keep stocking rumbles & let them in oblivion.
If I can come up with more Ideas, I'll surely tell ya.

Bingo on the lack of input. My job is rather seasonal and I didn't even have time to look at those pages to provide feedback.
In the end, if an undeserving track gets in it is YOUR fault (the individual voter) for not bringing it up and getting it dumped. It certainly isn't the process' fault or the rumble's fault. The Rumble is only as good as the voters make it.

If Mega Man 3 hadnt raised the bar even higher than its predecessor, its likely we wouldnt be talking about Mega Man today. While 2 was a success, its development was marred by doubts and ultimatums from the higher-ups, and there was clearly some creative tension left over during the next games production. Funny that players knew they were in for something good right from the beginning, as soon as the Capcom copyrights popped up and the music started.

My votes are for two of my favorite songs from the series: Two Rivers and Eternal Flow.
In other news, a few people now do TAS videos where they play multiple games simultaneously with only a single input. For example, this guy played Super Mario Bros. 1, 2, 3, and the Lost Levels (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_AerCVhoTM) together. When he pressed A, every Mario jumped. When he pressed right, every Mario went right (although it's more complicated than that). I'm not sure whether the feat is impressive, since it's a TAS, but at least the time investment makes for an interesting watch. Likewise, here's one involving Mega Man 3, 4, 5, and 6 (

That list totally lost me when I saw Resi 4 at #6. Not to mention that Uncharted 2 and Kingdom Hearts are on the list at all. I guess no two people will ever agree on the matter because opinions exist, but come the fuck on! Kingdom Hearts, Uncharted 2 and Resi 4 are some of the best stories you've seen in a video game?

Gothic Neclord - Although this track is particularilly very "non-Suiko", Wind of Phantom electric guitar kinda turned me off big time. The melody was great though, but it isn't something that comes to mind when we talk about Suikoden.

Super Cliched overused but modified storylines sell a lot. RE4 storyline Sucks big time and could be easily replaced by almost any other RE title.
That list is pure Fanservice man.
KOTOR 1 got at the top 10? MGS3 at 3rd Place? WTF?!

EDIT: Spoony tells about Video Games Live
http://spoonyexperiment.com/2011/04/08/vlog-4-7-11-video-games-live/
I finally got a chance to watch this. When I saw Video Games Live, the house was packed--I mean, with people stuck outside who couldn't get tickets. It was a circus, with all age groups represented. So it's interesting that the turn-out for his show was so different.
It was also interesting to hear how similar the set was. Tallarico talked about how often they change the music at my show, too, but from Spoony's description every little detail was the same--all the way to the failed Guitar Hero Aerosmith moment. It also confirmed for me that the cellist who head-bangs during "One-Winged Angel" is a plant. I'd never seen him before in our local orchestra and haven't seen him since.
Funny that Spoony was so gaga over Flute Link. She's good, but uhhhhh not the kind of performer that makes you want to give up trying, as he put it. I get the impression his musical background hasn't included a lot of orchestra music. :-\
Still, I agree wholeheartedly that the show is worth seeing if you get the chance. As over the top as it is, with all of Tallarico's ridiculous theatrics, I got really into it. When they turned down the lights and started the Mega Man medley, I actually jumped up and clapped. Even my wife, who has zero interest in vgm, said she thought it was fantastic.
Anybody excited to hear the Portal 2 soundtrack?
Definitely. But I'm more interested to hear more of...
Mortal Kombat
I've heard a little. Some of it's good, and some of it's really bad. So I want to see which impression is closer to the truth.

Sorry for the delay. I'm working on fleshing out the presentation for the semifinals.
In the meantime, a speed run (
http://speeddemosarchive.com/IWannaBeTheGuy.html) of I Wanna Be the Guy: The Movie: The Game was just posted and reminded me of how many classic vgm tunes (many of which appeared in our NES rumble) are in that game.
Also, a close friend of mine told me I had to read Extra Lives: Why Video Games Matter (

@Eshvoide: Some time ago I tried to find them, too, and read that they're in a made-up language. I just checked and that seems to still be the dominant theory.

The Suikoden Songs Rumble
Semifinals, Fight 1
Suikoden Rising Tide (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p2n6d5B0W2I)
by Miki Higashino, Tappi Iwase, Hiroshi Tamawari, Hirofumi Taniguchi, and Mayuko Kageshita (1995)
One of the greatest burdens in composing for video games is diversifying the tracks so that a new location can be introduced with immediate, definable characteristics, setting it apart from the other locations in the game. In an RPG, where there are a lot of locations and the size of the world map demands the distant cities to have distinct cultures, that task can become enormous. Yet Higashino never disappointed. While she was not the first to use environmental, diegetic sounds within the musical track (Jeremy Soule was with his Secret of Evermore soundtrack), she was as clever (if not more so) in knowing when and how to deploy them. Within a few seconds of this tracks start, you hear waves crashing, a bird call, a bell, and a warm synth patch, allowing you to immediately know youre dealing with a peaceful, safe fishing village.
vs.
Suikoden II Imprisoned Town (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w6exvhdhIE8)
by Miki Higashino and Keiko Fukami (1998)
That makes for an easy comparison with this theme: a claustrophobic arpeggio performed by a sluggish, low-pitched organ. That makes sense with the title. But once you get into the second section, the flutes add an aristocratic, Old World tilt to the song that suggests the town's academic background and wealth, and even the architecture. That's hard to do.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Suikoden Songs Rumble

Suikoden Forgotten Days (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FOBwvbNz3Dk)
by Miki Higashino, Tappi Iwase, Hiroshi Tamawari, Hirofumi Taniguchi, and Mayuko Kageshita (1995)
When this song plays in the game, the main characters have just traveled back in time. Higashino again uses a flute, but to much different effect. Here, the melody is drawn-out with little ascensions at the end of each phrase. Is it too much of a stretch to say that such a gesture suggests things opening up, more information becoming available, the landscape of the story widening? Maybe. But all of those things are true for the scene that follows. Certainly, the tension from the length of the held notes, along with the bird calls and warm synths backing up the melody, suggests that something complex and important is about to happen.
vs.
Suikoden III Exceeding Love (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8z_hCwrNcLs)
by Michiru Yamane, Takashi Yoshida, and Masahiko Kimura (2002)
Finally, we end up on the complete opposite side of the spectrum. Whereas "Forgotten Days" is quiet, spare, and pretty, "Exceeding Love" is bombastic, multi-layered, multi-part, and stirring. It's reminiscent, too, of the music from Civilization and that game's pan-cultural flair. But this tune's use of snare drums also gives it a militaristic feel that's appropriate for the game. This was the new sound of Suikoden, once Higashino left.
My votes are for Rising Tide and Exceeding Love.

And the winner of the Suikoden battle is
Suikoden II Imprisoned Town (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w6exvhdhIE8)!
by Miki Higashino and Keiko Fukami (1998)
A great choice to represent the Suikoden series, this theme is driven by a claustrophobic arpeggio performed by a sluggish, low-pitched organ. Both of those choices make sense with the title and with whats going on in the game at the time it plays. But once you get into the second section, the flutes add an aristocratic, Old World tilt to the song that also suggests Greenhills academic background and wealth and even its architecture. Consequently, this is an example of Higashinos ability to characterize a fictional culture with just a few notessomething that is both admirable and difficult to accomplish.

Off topic, but worth checking out: James Rolfe & friends eat every pizza (
http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2011/05/michelangelo_pizza_taste_test.html) described in the original TMNT cartoon series.
@Smarty: Thanks for the links! I'm going to check those out as soon as exam week is over. :-\

This is completely off-topic, but did anyone watch Eurovision this year? I found it entertaining, I'd like to see what you guys think.

I didn't even know it was happening right now. :-\ Despite being internationally famous, it's not broadcast on American television or even mentioned in our news. Instead, this (
http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/offbeat/2011/05/12/moos.let.him.go.to.prom.cnn?hpt=T2) was the top news story yesterday.

...Some very interesting news right there... I guess it's called Eurovision for a reason.
Well, I watched the whole thing, semi finals and finals included. It's easily the best year the contest has had since 2007 (which was the best Eurovision year EVER), imo. I can share more details via PM if you want :D
Also, search Youtube to find a channel called EurovisionHouse. It has all live videos from the finals and semi finals as well as the voting.

Hey, the forums are back... happy day.
Unfortunately, I don't really have a horse in the race. I'd rather do the one that is the shortest or the one that has been in the pipe the longest.

The shortest one would be Sakimoto--with 16 soundtracks. The one that's been around the longest is PS2.
So far, the voting looks like this...
3 votes for PS1
2 votes for PS2
2 votes for Sakimoto
1 vote for Composers
P.S. @Eshvoide, still glad to have you back. :D

So PS1 is a go. Do you all want to do that exclusively? Or do you want to pair it with PS2 or Sakimoto?

Since it would a long one, I say exclusive.

Pair it with PS2. In about a month, that rumble will officially have been in the waiting for a year.

Bleck; A double PlayStation rumble would be the Sony hater's nightmare (that would be this guy by the way). Not saying you shouldn't do it, just saying I hate the PlayStation. : )

Two things as I get stuff together.
1) If you have suggestions for the PS1 rumble (
http://forums.ffshrine.org/groups/vgm-rumble-group-procrastination-station/best-ps1-97/), they would be most appreciated. We only have 10 soundtracks left that need recommendations, all of which I've listened to in the past but not recently. We still need 5 song recommendations for...

Those were pretty hilarious! The #7 guy is actually pretty good I think. I believe it is Paul Eiding, likely best known for his work as the Overmind in StarCraft and StarCraft II. He was also the Warrior and Narrator in Diablo and Aldaris in StarCraft.

Good ear. That's definitely him, though I never would have noticed that. He's also the voice of Roy Campbell, who's a major character in the Metal Gear series.

He has quite an illustrious resume; good voice actor... bad line.
I hope we'll hear from him again in Diablo III.
Smarty

I still remember hearing his magic voice when I booted up Diablo for the first time when I was a kid. Stuff like that sticks with you. And I would never forget Aldaris either. Had no idea he was the Overmind too, though. Go figure.

On the flip side of things, here's (
http://www.gametrailers.com/user-movie/best-voice-acting-in-video/236515) a list (and another (
http://www.examiner.com/game-in-minneapolis/ten-of-the-best-video-game-voice-actors)) of the best voice actors in video games. The second link has more overlap with games I've played. Jennifer Hale and Cam Clarke are the two biggies on there.
Also, I'm now done adding song recommendations to the PS1 soundtracks list. Update coming soon.

Time to finalize the song selections. :D
Please skim the list for your favorite games and make sure your favorite song is on there. It’s more helpful if you can tell me which song your recommendation should replace, too. I’ve been working on this list for three months, and it’s the most labor-intensive list we’ve had for a rumble by a large, large margin. I think I would die of a heart attack if I knew how many hours I’ve put into this. But I’m happy to accommodate last minute suggestions. The goal here is to avoid having people feel cheated at the end of the rumble, saying, “If ___ song was listed as a recommendation, then my soundtrack would have won.” Here’s your opportunity to make sure that doesn’t happen.
Also, even if you’re not familiar with PS1 soundtracks, please click around. You’re going to hear some awesome music that should get you excited for what’s to come. Not only were the songs chosen for a purpose, but the sequence of the songs was considered as well. With each soundtrack, I wanted to represent the quality and diversity as best as possible.
Finally, the links should all work. But if you find one that died, please let me know.
We’ll start soon.

Question: Why isn't Tekken 3 on there? Its soundtrack is marginally better than 2's.
Recommendations:
I would like Wandering Ghosts (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y8JGNPE4ayw) to be added to the Symphony of the Night recommendations. It's easily one of my favorite on the soundtrack and would fit well with the rest of the recommendations. If you want to keep it 5 recommendations per game then I'd suggest removing Abandoned Pit, pretty forgettable really.
As for Silent Hill, I'd like to add 1 more track to the recommendations but I'm not sure which one should be removed to make room for it (I'm talking about Blood Tears (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HCdkYRx63HM)). I'll leave this one up to you.
Moving on to Persona 2. I think a clarification should be added that we are talking about Persona 2: Eternal Punishment, which is basically the 2nd part of P2. The first part, Innocent Sin, was never released outside of Japan (the PSP remake might come to the west soon, but no word on that yet) and is also not in the rumble (even though it kind of should). Also, I'm extremely against the tracks chosen to represent it. If it were up to me they would look something like this: Map I (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pw6-LkojX28), Maya (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xk702KGQsPI), Time Castle (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vGoZhnSNxF4), Kagyuu Mountain (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMsArE6_lLA), Boss Battle (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fee0GYSTebg)
And finally, in addition to the PS1 rumble are we going to do any others, or just focus on that one?

I added your song recommendations.
Tekken 3 wasn't nominated or brought up in the discussions. One person did step up to bat for Tekken 2, though. If you want, post 5 songs for Tekken 3 and we can have a discussion about one versus the other.
As for Persona 2, you're right that I only chose Eternal Punishment songs. Just like with Sonic 3 & Knuckles, though, the entry on the list stands for both games, which are considered part of one entity.
We are just going to focus on the PS1 rumble at the moment.

Our rumble has always placed as much importance on the process of finding a winner as it has on celebrating the actual winning song or soundtrack. It seems to me that the fun of the rumble is the fun of listening to and discussing those soundtracks as they come up in randomized, sometimes head-scratchingly silly head-to-head fights on the way to the finals. How do you decide which is better between Earthbound and Mega Man X when theyre going for completely different moods, using completely different genres of music, and both succeed? I dont know. But I enjoy it. And that process has allowed us to cover a pretty substantial collection of music over the last two years (240 soundtracks, 192 songs).
Still, it feels like weve barely scratched the surface of whats out there. Ive especially had that thought while compiling the soundtracks for this rumble. Its astonishing that we still havent even talked about Brave Fencer Musashi, Intelligent Qube, Klonoa, Legend of Dragoon, Medievil, Soukaigi, or Vagrant Storyall heavily lauded, sometimes controversial soundtracks that appear in discussions of video game music relative to its entire history.
It gets even more surprising when you consider how many major franchises we havent had a single entry from yet. Ace Combat, Crash Bandicoot, Grandia, Gran Turismo, Legacy of Kain, Lunar, Monster Rancher, Parappa, Persona, Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Spyro, Tales of, Tekken, Thunder Force, Tomb Raider, Valkyrie Profile, Wild Arms. Some of these series have been going for fifteen years, and we havent even mentioned them yet.
That all changes with the PlayStation Rumble.
It is my hope that theres something here for everyone. Weve got techno soundtracks, classic orchestral soundtracks, ambient soundtracks, jazz soundtracks, Indian music, baroque music, breakbeat, funk, country, rock, funny music, sad music, scary music, dissonant music, romantic music, and everything in between. If you click on the Looking for VGM Recommendations thread (
Thread 69378), tons of the links, at some point or another, connect back to the 64 soundtracks weve got going head to head here.
So why is the PlayStation 1 era so important for video game music? There are two reasons.
1) The popularity of the system brought the consoles music to a rapidly growing audience. The PlayStation was the first console to ship 100 million units, and from the beginning its launch addressed that new, larger audience with nearly every genre of game. From day one, you could play Battle Arena Toshinden, Doom, Warhawk, Air Combat, Philosoma, and Ridge Racer. The total catalog ballooned to nearly 8,000 titles by the end, collectively selling very close to 1 billion units. More people hearing the music from all of those games meant that more peoples opinions of video game music were shaped and influenced by this era.
2) On top of that, the technology behind the music took a big leap for this new audience. The history of console video game music before 1994 was a history of composers dealing with technological limitations. There were far fewer obstacles for composers now, due to the CDs ability to faithfully represent live musical performance. This is not to say the PlayStation was the first console to use music files off a CD. Prior to the fifth generation, the Sega CD, Turbografx CD, and CD-i all existed, among others. However, those consoles were prohibitively expensive, low-selling, and poorly reviewed because of catalogs filled with shovelware and kusoge. Thus, the experience of real, recorded instruments within a console video game was limited to a very small group of gamers.
When you take into account both of these factors, then, you can see why the world of video game music began to shift with the PlayStation. Whether or not that shift represented something good for the music remains to be seen. There is still a lively debate over the quality of video game music, be it declining or not, with some detractors claiming the debate itself is silly when there are good soundtracks and bad soundtracks now, just as there were in the beginning. The widening opportunities for composers to complicate and experiment did mean that the emphasis was sometimes less about melody and more about all of the other aspects of the compositions. But not always. Plus, the presence of a melody is certainly not the only determining factor for a good piece of music. That debate isn't worth resurrecting here.
What is worth saying is just how interesting the world of video games was in the mid-nineties, particularly in regards to the music. Starting with the third generation of consoles, many video game composers aimed to elevate their products beyond a simple, cartoonish representation of human behavior into something more emotionally complex. The goal was to have a parent walk into a room and not see a child playing a childs game, but to see a child immersed in something rapturous, tense, and fun. This endeavor took technical knowledge, sympathy for human error, and courageous imagination to succeed. With each soundtrack in this rumble, you will hear those moments of success.
Get excited. :D

Today is the rumble's second anniversary. Holy crap. Thank you all for your participation!
It sure hasn't felt like that long. I can still remember starting this rumble two years ago, during the week of my brothers wedding. And tomorrow is my sister's wedding. There's a nice sense of circularity there.
For the first anniversary (
http://forums.ffshrine.org/f63/official-video-game-music-rumble-66118/29.html#post1484405), I listed out what we'd already accomplished. Here's what weve done since then. The winners of the rumbles from this past year in order are...

Back again. I've been doing wedding stuff ever since the above post, so I'm not sure when the forums went down. But it looks like it happened pretty much as soon as that last post went up. We'll give this fight two days like normal, which will allow me to contemplate if I'm really going to vote against Wild Arms.
Also, of general interest, Jessie just posted this (
Thread 90641) massive box set of music from EA games. I think some of you all will dig it. :D
P.S. If the forums go down some day, do you all have ideas about where we could still keep in touch? Are any of you all members of the FFShrine Facebook group?

Here's the link: The FFShrine Facebook Group (
http://www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=group_196693673702007)
Full disclosure: I haven't joined this group. When they first created it, someone was tagging people in various pictures of animals having sex. Even though the pictures were eventually removed, I'm Facebook friends with my employers (and others who I hope will employ me in the future) and can't have that stuff showing up in their feeds if someone decides to do it again. So I just have the link saved and check in from time to time to see if there's any news.
We could share e-mail adresses, too. I'd hate to lose contact with you guys if the forums were to ever permanently go down (and that might happen sooner rather than later).
I also wouldn't want to lose touch with anyone here. This seems like a good idea, especially for people who haven't joined Facebook (or for those, like me, who deactivate their accounts at times). I'll send a private message around to see if people are interested.

Hahaha. I forgot you had beef with FFIX.

That happens to me all the time. Hearing the music outside the game is a really good test to see if the songs are worth anything. I really thought Legend of Dragoon was middle of the road in every way when I played it, so I was surprised I liked the music so much more by itself.

By the way, if you're wondering why links keep disappearing and why the "What's New?" button is giving crazy results, the explanation is here:
Thread 90702 The problem only occurs with the Timewarp skin, which is what I (and I think most others) use.
Also, when I was writing the PlayStation rumble introduction a week or so ago, I ran across this and forgot to post it: N-Sider.com: SNES-CD Profile (
http://www.n-sider.com/contentview.php?contentid=231). It's a short history of the planned Nintendo/Sony CD add-on for the SNES, which we probably all know about. But what's interesting is that it has pictures of the prototype that Sony developed with both an SNES cartridge port and a CD drive. I'd never actually seen an example of the console before. Pretty ugly and bulky, even for a prototype.

On another note, you all probably noticed that I changed the look of the rumble once we started with PlayStation. What I didn't anticipate is that there would be so much chaos after the forums went down. Is everybody using the new Timewarp skin? Strange... Since I last posted, they've revised the new Timewarp to have white text again. And the links are visible. But a lot of other things are still subdued or glitchy. The two biggest things that bother me are that the page numbers for threads are dark blue on a black background, making them hard to read. And our profile pages are all kinds of messed up.
On another note, you all may have noticed that the Lunar YouTube videos have the Sega Saturn cover as the background image. I forgot to mention that those are most definitely the PlayStation versions of the songs, though. I guess the uploader was mistaken or got lazy. What's weirder is that RPGMusicDotOrg, another user and one that's usually attentive to detail, uploaded the Saturn version of the songs (example (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ndmK97qwNZk)) with the PlayStation cover as the background image. Don't know what's going on.
If you did like the five samples and want to check out the rest of the Lunar soundtrack, search for Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete as opposed to Silver Star Story, which is the Saturn version. It's a good soundtrack. Too bad it had to go against Metal Gear Solid.

There's an interesting back story to Koudelka that I forgot to mention, and I'm not sure how well-known it is.
Back in 1997, Hiroki Kikuta, Square's composer for Secret of Mana and Seiken Densetsu 3, was offered some money by SNK to break away from Square and start his own video game development company. Why SNK had this vision for Kikuta is difficult to know. Kikuta didn't act in any greater capacity than as composer for either Mana game, and he hadn't been in the business long, nor had he studied the business in college (he studied religion, philosophy, and cultural anthropology). So he wasn't what you'd consider a prime candidate for a video game developer. He had gained a reputation on par with Jeremy Soule, Yasunori Mitsuda, Yoko Shimomura, and David Wise at the time. In other words, he was a rising star in video game composition, and no doubt had his pick of projects to score. But where the shared ambition for directing and producing came from, I don't know. I'm sure we all know people who have been given responsibilities that exceed their talents.
Regardless, he got the opportunity. Sacnoth was formed (named after a weapon in a Lord Dunsany short story). And Koudelka was the first game they produced. However, during the game's development, there had been serious in-fighting about how the battle system was going to work. Kikuta wanted a Resident Evil clone. His staff were willing to give him a survival horror game if they could implement a turn-based battle system close to what they'd done while working for Square on the Final Fantasy games. Kikuta put his foot down and said it was out of the question. Eventually, the development team won, and the game was given turn-based fights. But if you play Koudelka, you can see the game design concepts at war with one another.
That's only reinforced by the jerkiness of the musical transitions. We can't necessarily recreate the gameplay experience here with a song list, but the gist is that you spend a lot of the game walking around with very quiet, ambient, spooky music, as you'd expect in a Resident Evil game. Then, all of a sudden, the screen swirls from an encounter with an invisible enemy (like in an RPG) and the ambient, dark music cuts to this (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Eu_zij3Rz8). I'd imagine the extended percussion intro was used to try to soften that switch, but nevertheless the mood of the game was undercut over and over because of that mistake. Gamers complained, as did the critics. And Koudelka became a flop, despite its many redeeming qualities.
Thus, this soundtrack is an interesting case for us, because the in-game execution of the music is quite bad. But our job is to judge the quality of the music on its own merits first. Only if we've played the game can we secondarily judge its appropriateness. With those criteria in mind, I honestly like Koudelka's music. I'm just not that interested in the game it came from. It did also have some historical importance, because Kikuta resigned, SNK folded, Aruze Entertainment bought Sacnoth and changed the name to Nautilus, and then used their favorite parts of Koudelka to create the Shadow Hearts series, which has been much more successful. As for Kikuta, he went on to form his own record label, on which he has released several CDs. But failed, high-profile projects have plagued him since Koudelka, and he has certainly lost the prestige he had in the mid-nineties as a part of the generation of composers to follow in Kondo and Uematsu's footsteps.

My votes are for Resident Evil and Breath of Fire IV. Both Policenauts and Resident Evil have surprisingly beautiful moments in their soundtracks, which makes a decision between the two difficult. But in my mind "Narrow and Close" is an iconic piece that gives RE the edge. Monster Rancher's soundtrack is a lot of fun but pretty limited in scope. And it's a bitch to find clips of the music on YouTube. There's almost nothing available. Apologies for the meager selection there. It's worth checking out the whole soundtrack if you can find it. I'm going with BOF4 for its diversity.

My votes are for Einhander and Soukaigi. This is a terrible match-up for Soukaigi, which is an amazing, beautiful, virtually unknown soundtrack. If you like the recommended tracks, DEFINITELY check out the rest of it.
As for the other fight, Breath of Fire IIIs music is great, but you hear it so many times throughout the long, slooow game (even the speed run is 9 hours long) that I think it inevitably loses some of its luster, even though I havent played it since 1998 (!). That, and Einhander is bad ass.

My votes are for Final Fantasy Tactics and Wild Arms 2. Two Square properties butting heads in the first one. I love both, but I gotta go with Tactics, which is classic Sakimoto. And two female composers in the second fight, which doesn't happen too often.
The second fight is another good example of how the quality of synths for PlayStation soundtracks was sometimes dramatically different from game to game, like our earlier fight between Legend of Mana and Dragon Warrior VII. Composers had a lot more freedom compared to previous generations of consoles, but still had to play accountant and portion out how much memory could be used for certain samples and tracks. So you get a real trumpet in the second song for Wild Arms, but a synth sax in the opener for Front Mission. And it made a big difference at the time, when gamers were having their expectations reset for how video game music could sound.

My votes are for Resident Evil 2 and Grandia. Both Grandia and Ace Combat 3 are awesome, so I just picked the one I listen to more often. Grandia also impressed me because it's the work of one composer, as opposed to seven. The other fight was a little easier. It's hard to beat Resident Evil 2's "Safe Room," which is a classic.
Sidenote: You might have noticed that two lesser known names appear in both fights: Hiroshi Okubo (

) (discography (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hiroshi_Okubo)) and Tetsukazu Nakanishi (

) (discography (
http://vgmdb.net/artist/1361)). These were the composers behind much of the Ridge Racer and Ace Combat series for Namco--both of whom have been around since the early nineties. However, neither has gained name recognition, despite their prolific output. Maybe that will change when you hear their music for Klonoa: Door to Phantomile in an upcoming fight? It's one of my favorite PlayStation soundtracks. :D

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Bd940BkxGY), Toasty (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4IbvdqyNcQ)
My votes are for Persona and Spyro. The second fight was really difficult to choose. Everything on Medievil is great, but "Toasty" is a perfect combination of synths and live orchestra, and its sound is memorable enough to represent the whole Spyro series.
Bonus: A nice arranged version (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4loSMvSUy5Q) of "Poem for Everyone's Souls"
Also, here's an interesting tidbit: "The soundtrack of Front Mission 3, the third game of the main series and the fifth game of the total series, was composed by Koji Hayama and Hayato Matsuo, with one track contributed by Shigeki. Matsuo handled the orchestral pieces, while Hayama worked on the techno ones. The pieces were performed with synthesizers that were designed to sound like higher-quality versions of the types of sounds used in the original Front Mission, rather than sounding more like the actual instruments they represented." My votes are for Silent Hill and Lunar 2.
I love Threads of Fates soundtrack, and Im playing the game right now and enjoying it. Its a nicely cohesive soundtrack with a lot of variations on its strongest melodies. But all things being equal, Silent Hill is every bit as cohesive and more important to the history of vgm. It seems to me that Akira Yamaoka made good on Hip Tanakas mission to create an ambient, engrossing video game soundtrack that didnt rely on melodies for emotional impact (although it had plenty of good melodies). Silent Hills quite a bit scarier than Metroid, too. Right from that opening theme, you know youre not in the Mushroom Kingdom anymore.
Speaking of scary music, Lil Bonus Room. Holy shit. Ill never leave you.

Yep. Don't have much of an opinion myself on the matter, though. I've played and beaten Kid Icarus, and I never had the nostalgia that others did for it.
