I'll Throw a 1d3 (Actually I'm going to Throw 1d4, If the result is 4 I'll throw again) for FFVII that I like..
1-Fighting
2-Still More Fighting
3- JENOVA
The result is 2

For those who doesn't know how to read a 4 faced dice, the number of the base is the one that counts.

My votes are for Mike Tysons Punch Out! and Final Fantasy IX. Oh boy. I have tons to say, but for right now I'll have to cut myself short. Suffice it to say, I think Gun Hazard is a fascinating soundtrack for being a successful blending of Mitsuda and Uematsu's styles post-Chrono Trigger/pre-FF7, and I don't think the song selection found here does it justice (since what's available online is limited). But ultimately Final Fantasy IX is too broad-ranging, diverse in style, and memorable to be beaten this early in the rumble. Listen to both soundtracks and enjoy. This should be a fun rumble, start to finish. :)

Happy New Years to all of our friends around the world! I hope 2010 brings you happiness and success and (as far as the rumble goes) a little bit of entertainment, too. I feel very privileged to be able to share my love of video game music with all of you and to have a space online where we can turn that mutual interest into something constructive. Part of my resolution this year is to keep giving as much of my time as possible to this thread.
And on that note, barring any major setbacks, I'll have the next round posted tomorrow. In the meantime, I can announce our winners from the last round as Mike Tyson's Punch Out! (6-4) and Final Fantasy IX (9-0). We have lots of fun match-ups coming up soon, so keep checking in. Thanks for your participation over the last few months, and take care over the holiday season.

Batman: Return of the Joker
and
Final Fantasy X
Chrono Trigger is one of the greatest video game soundtracks of all time, but like Szczepan, I think Mitsuda's contributions are the ones that make the case for that. Nobuo's are excellent, but there is a greater variety in style and composition throughout FFX's soundtrack that ultimately is what won my vote. I can understand the argument that Silent Light, Sealed Door, or People Without Hope are so totemic and so good at drawing you back into the game's world, that they should win because the choice of sounds suggest something of the game's environment--in this case industrial/dystopic--more effectively than anything on Final Fantasy X does. But for me the fun of hearing all the variations of Seymour's Theme or the Normal Battle theme or Jecht's Theme, and the emotional weight of some of the pieces like To Zanarkand, and the interesting blending of classical and electronic instruments in songs like Auron's Theme (a technique that Nobuo later did to great effect in the Lost Odyssey soundtrack) create a more dramatic and dynamic listening experience.

It's a little confusing how Chrono Trigger is even on this countdown, as almost every one of the memorable tracks is by Mitsuda, but oh well. I love Moon in Ducktales, and that's basically it. I like Overworld 2 (aka Athletic) song in Super Mario Brothers 3 and a couple of others which I can't think of the name right now. For me, the choice between the NES soundtracks is harder than the one between the Uematsu soundtracks. Both Gradius and Willow have songs that are classics for the system, and both have distinct styles: Gradius is more in line with the upbeat, extremely catchy, melody-based music that was characteristic of 8-bit platformers and shmups and the like, whereas Willow experiments with sounds and textures more, ranging from the use of dissonance in the unusual fanfare-style opening track to the removal of most channels in the flute solo piece. It's hard to qualify which soundtrack is better, because both are good at what they do, but I probably prefer listening to Willow more than Gradius. So it'll get my vote this time. As for the Uematsu soundtracks, I'm hoping Lost Odyssey goes the distance, or is at least one of the finalists. If you're interested, Battlefield (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zhpwyVkje9Q) and Saman, Town of Merchants (

I try to listen to most of the soundtrack for each candidate in these rumbles before voting if I haven't played the game (which is the case for both NES suitors), and Gradius just seemed to have more tracks that made me have a desire to continue listening. I did enjoy Willow, though.

I wonder though, why Final Fantasy II wasn't shortlisted for the rumble? In my opinion, it's one of Uematsu's better soundtracks, and easily his best NES Final Fantasy.
I spent a lot of time thinking about this. FFII was on the list originally. However, through the process of recommendations and revision we decided there were other worthy soundtracks and we needed to bump something.
Here was my thinking. Final Fantasy I had to be on the list. It's a classic, it's popular, it has historical significance for the FF series and for Uematsu. It couldn't go. Final Fantasy IV-X were much more expansive, ambitious, and successful soundtracks relative to the NES music, besides being very popular themselves. And most would contend that's where Uematsu's strongest work is. They couldn't go. Next were Blue Dragon, Chrono Trigger, Front Mission: Gun Hazard, Lord of Vermilion, and Lost Odyssey, all of which I felt were successful soundtracks that showed different sides of Uematsu and would spice the rumble up. Perhaps Chrono Trigger was a weak link because of Uematsu's limited contributions, but...maybe not. It's one of my favorite soundtracks, I like Uematsu's work on it, I thought it had a chance, and people didn't mention it when making suggestions. So I decided to let it stay.
That left FFII vs. FFIII. And I felt FFIII was stronger, although that's, of course, highly debatable. The two soundtracks are more similar than different, and a lot of the songs match up with one another--for instance, Revivification (
http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOSTation#p/c/47A62474675BFB4F/2/vme03BOxZEE) from FFII uses a short repetitive arpeggio and bass line to carry the song just like Eternal Wind (
http://www.youtube.com/user/VideogamesOST#p/u/206/-vDlAJWSEIg) from FFIII. The difference is that while Revivification ends up being more of an ambient track, Eternal Wind's melody adds an extra dimension that's skillfully done and emotionally complex, like so many of Uematsu's later melodies. It's not sad, exactly, and it's not heroic. It's not restful, but it's not hyperkinetic either. It's somewhere in between all of those, and that makes it interesting for me, even after listening to it for so many years. Of course, this is an arbitrary comparison--these two songs aren't really written for the same purpose. But on principle, I heard little things like that, the intangible qualities of Uematsu's music, throughout FFIII's soundtrack that through personal preference made me go with it over FFII.
You could make a great case for FFII, as you say. The Main Theme (
http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOSTation#p/c/47A62474675BFB4F/5/0tboZy6x_bM) does all of the things I'm talking about above, but out of my own personal preference isn't as compelling a listening experience because the bass line feels a little obtrusive and clunky to me. On some of the less conspicuous pieces, though, like The Magician's Tower (
http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOSTation#p/c/47A62474675BFB4F/9/p0xuTqvQ01U), the bass writing is fantastic and dynamic. You know, it's where you place the emphasis.
I guess more than anything, FFIII just seemed like the bigger turning point in Uematsu's career. Tracks from FFII like Imperial Army Theme (
http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOSTation#p/c/47A62474675BFB4F/7/eJ_SQUQhQnU) and Ancient Castle (
http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOSTation#p/c/47A62474675BFB4F/10/_qPBODxSxyw) could have fit right into the FFI soundtrack. But songs from FFIII like Town of Water (
http://www.youtube.com/user/VideogamesOST#p/u/186/e2Y3zSDawUk) and This Is the Last Battle (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYAYGwujyx4)...I mean, holy shit. Those are little precursors to Aerith's Theme and his heavy metal work, respectively, besides being structural models for how he composed types of songs for types of situations later on. And on top of that, the experimentation with the sounds you could get out of the NES, the way water is suggested by the types of sounds and the tempo of Town of Water, and the way This Is the Last Battle mimics an echo effect in the opening and takes that sharp turn into double-time before exploding into a weird Follin-esque wobbly kind of sound--all of this mad, building pressure to set up something that's more like a dance track than a battle theme... For me, that's cool, and fun to hear every time. I don't know. That's my take.
But I'm a worrier. I thought long and hard about keeping FFII on the list, even going to a asymmetrical first round with one fight involving three soundtracks. Ultimately, it didn't seem worth it. But I hope this gives a little more insight into how that decision came about. I guess the piece of string to tie around your finger is to always check the song or soundtrack lists when we're voting on what goes in the rumble, too. I'm happy to oblige, if someone wants to see their favorite go up to the plate. :)

On the other hand, I'll give a much bigger edge to Final Fantasy VIII, one of my favorite soundtracks from the FF series.
By the way, if you haven't heard of him, lonlonjp (

Way back in 1994, I was browsing through the Super Nintendo games at the family-owned movie rental store down the street from my parents' house, and I came across Final Fantasy IV. Knowing nothing about it, I brought it home, played it, loved it, and asked for it for my birthday. Then, come my birthday, my mom handed me a small package in the tell-tale rectangular shape, and I opened it up, and instead of a bright red background with a gleaming sword, I was looking at a purple shadow looming over Mog. My mom had bought me Final Fantasy VI instead of Final Fantasy IV, plus a strategy guide, and she looked proud for getting her son the cool gift he wanted. I didn't tell her it was the wrong game, and although I was disappointed, I was intrigued to give it a try since I didn't even know a sequel to FFIV existed. Of course, it ended being one of the greatest games of all time, and more specifically for our purposes, it also had one of the greatest video game soundtracks for its time, which I wouldn't have noticed if Peter Olafson, the author of the strategy guide I was using, didn't repeatedly mention how we should wait a second before moving on to the next area so that we could enjoy the music. Not exactly what you'd expect from a strategy guide, but I'm glad he told me to do that, because I began to love Nobuo Uematsu as much as the game itself. When Final Fantasy Anthology came out with a soundtrack CD included, I bought that, too, and remembered all the songs though I hadn't heard them in years, and, well, here we are. Who knows if I would have sought out FFS if my mom hadn't accidentally bought me the wrong game.
My votes are for Contra and Final Fantasy VI.

I haven't played LO before, but with that kind of music, I will definitely have to give it a shot when I can find a copy.
Forgot to mention this earlier, but I haven't played Lost Odyssey either and really want to try it some day. I'm about a decade behind in new games, but everything I've heard about it is good.

I played it myself only once for about 1 hour on a friend's Xbox360. It's just magnificent. I'm actually considering getting a console I hate (i.e. Xbox360) just for this game.

I might be headed down that same path. Your comment actually made me think about my wife, because just like the game is bringing you to a console you don't like, the music has made my wife (who's a composer) concede that video game music can be more than bleeps and bloops. Understandably, she gets tired of it being played around here all the time. But I finally got her to admit that LO's soundtrack was good, and now I'm playing bits and pieces of Shadow of the Colossus here or there, trying to break her down. I expect a long and hard-fought battle, though (she's already resisted for five years :)).

Thanks to everyone who voted! Final Fantasy VIII wiped the floor with Blue Dragon (10-0). But, on the other end of the spectrum, Castlevania battled it out with Mega Man every step of the way and just barely squeaked by (6-5). Itll be fun to see it again down the road. But for now, we have finally reached the semifinals of the Uematsu rumble, and just like with Castlevania, we are switching to Uematsu-only voting so that its final will get the appropriate spotlight. Well have the first semifinal today, the second semifinal starting Tuesday, and then the final round on Thursday. After that, well resume the NES soundtracks rumble and add in a vote for what the next battle will be, including an option to forgo other rumbles until we finish with the NES. So for anyone who doesnt want to vote on the Uematsu finals, theres plenty to talk about and do on the group page (

Final Fantasy VI (

for the Super Nintendo (1994)
- Fun Fact: The English translation of the game was done by one man, Ted Woolsey, in just 30 days despite the necessity of many script changes to remove cursing, violence, religious references, and sexuality. On top of that, he had to make name changes to reflect the games themes and story revisions to squeeze all the text into the cartridges limited storage space. The speed at which he completed this mammoth task resulted in some questionable choices, including Woolseys infamous translation of Son of a bitch! in the original Japanese to Son of a submariner! in the American version.

What can I say that hasnt already been said? This soundtrack is a masterpiece. The unusually high number of character themes and clever deployment of leitmotifs throughout the soundtrack are just the first admirable facets of this work. Put on The Veldt and youll hear a type of percussion that not only suggests a landscape, but an entire culture, too. The first impression is that of a primal society, of course. That holds true to the rugged nature of enemy hunting on the veldt, and the backwards use of carrier pigeons as communication in the area despite the worlds much farther advanced technology. However, the call and response between the main theme and the clarinet, and the djembe and dundun drums, creates a playful conversation that is also suggestive of the freespirited personalities of the youth in the area, including Gau, Duane, and Katarin. Maybe its too much of a stretch to suggest that people living in such rugged conditions would naturally need a good sense of humor and would have a connection to rhythm instruments more than the classical European instruments heard in the music of Figaro, Jidoor, or Vectorand consequently, this aspect of the music is appropriate. But maybe not. Regardless, there is a level of attention to detail throughout the soundtrack that is remarkable given the mishmash variety of occupations, backgrounds, cultures, and events in the game, and if the soundtrack suffers any from its broad scope, it at least makes a compelling attempt to resolve those tensions in the staggering finale, in which most of the games themes are interwoven seamlessly into one piece.

Lost Odyssey (

However, after learning more about the games pacifist message and seeing concept art that shocked him with its vividness and beauty, he signed on and helped promote the game.

So why do I like the Lost Odyssey soundtrack so much? Let's just start with "Neverending Journey." It's hard to find a point of comparison that's at the same level, but I'll go with "Corridors of Time" from Chrono Trigger, since I think that's another example of some of the best work we've seen from video game composers. What is special about both songs is the way the opening arpeggio transforms as soon as the other instruments come in. In both cases, the first time you hear the song turn that corner, it is totally unexpected, and once it does, the piece morphs into something much more complex and riveting. Within the space of two and half minutes, "Neverending Journey" goes from a wedding dance to a mournful flute melody to a romantic ensemble piece to a a towering, foot-stomping, head-bobbing, guitar-harmony-driven fight song. It's slick. It's beautiful. It's sad. And it's rocking. It's about all you can ask from a two-and-a-half minute song, and by its brevity, invites repeated listening. It made me a Uematsu fan all over again. And that's just one of the first songs on the soundtrack, which doesn't even touch on the leap in orchestral writing that Uematsu took with this soundtrack. Blue Dragon is nice, but lacked the themes of Lost Odyssey to give too many of the songs weight. It was tempting to feel like, say, "The Land Shark Is Coming" was a good exercise in technique for Uematsu with many nice parts (including the rattlesnake trumpet that rears up in the middle), but ultimately just a collection of parts and a mood piece. Even with all that blustering, it somehow felt underwhelming because it didn't have a payoff. Here, the tensions are controlled and resolved in such a way in songs like "Prologue," "Battlefield," "Epsylon Range," "World of Ice," "Saman, Town of Merchants," "Blizzard Field," or "Ruins of the East," as to give each piece individual depth as well as a sense of collective unity that is organic and delicately achieved. Despite how far-ranging this soundtrack is, the details in instrument selection, song structure, arrangement, and contrasting mood show Uematsu at his best, referencing his previous achievements while also building on them. It has his Zorro signature all over it while also introducing new elements to his style that will keep old and new fans happy. And that's what I think makes it one of his best works.
Now having said all that, I have no idea which soundtrack I'm going to vote for. :) I need to listen to them both one more time, and then I'll put in my choice.
*By the way, the titles of the soundtracks link to complete OST playlists on YouTube, so you can hear more if you want.

- Fun Fact: Uematsu consciously avoided writing character themes on this soundtrack because he believed most of the characters weren't important enough to merit one. Thus, Squall and Rinoa got “Eyes on Me," and that was it.

It’s hard not to hear this soundtrack as a reaction to VII and, in fact, the designers of VIII have said that the game from top to bottom was meant to be brighter and fresher than its predecessor. There are connections between the two—Liberi Fatali as One-Winged Angel 2.0, Roses and Wine as Aerith’s Theme 2.0, the fight songs as variations of the guitar-driven techno fight songs of VII—but there is also a lighthearted, carefree attitude in many of the pieces like Balamb Garden and Breezy that are meant to reflect a school days kind of atmosphere, and succeed, I think. In terms of Uematsu’s entire catalog, it seems he might have been reaching back towards the goofiness of FFIV’s Mystic Mysidia (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LwtdCcviYl4) with tracks like Silence and Motion and Residents and the multipart baroque Dancing Mad from FFVI with The Castle, while also looking forward with the harpsichord Edea pieces, the orchestral arrangements (his first), and, of course, Eyes on Me—a type of song that, for better or worse, continues to be a staple of Final Fantasy ending music. Therefore, VIII represents a synthesis of much of his previous work, as IX was, and equally a sign of things to come, too. Its emphasis is on reflecting a variety of moods and locations, and it does that well. And like VII, it contains several classic Uematsu pieces that work beautifully in the context of the game and sound beautiful outside of that context, too.
vs.
Final Fantasy VII (
http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=77D98F68F6DBB35D)
for the PlayStation (1997)
- Fun Fact: The finished product is completely different from the original design. This game was supposed to be on the Super Nintendo and set in New York in 1999 with your character on a mission to blow up the city of Midgar while being followed by a hot-blooded detective named Joe. A sorceress named Edea was also somehow involved. However, everything changed when part of the staff was re-assigned to help with the completion of Chrono Trigger. After they came back, Square believed 2D games were too limiting. They soon separated ways from Nintendo, struck a deal with Sony for a CD-based game, and assembled a staff of 120 people under a $30 million budget to begin the game we now know.
- Previously beat: Final Fantasy V, Final Fantasy X
- Recommended: Still More Fighting (

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q85KIhPXrIQ), Cid’s Theme (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r2WYkfGYD8k)
You blow up the reactor, defend yourself against the president, escape the Turks with Aeris, become a prostitute, watch as an entire area of your city is destroyed, climb out of the ruins, sneak into Shinra HQ, find everyone dead, fight your way out, finally leave Midgar, and get to the open-exploration part of the game where you’re usually rewarded with a big, boisterous main theme. And what do you get? A lethargic, almost dirge-like, sweep of strings. If you raced, you’ve only only taken two hours to get to this point. But more likely it’s been three or four, and the tone is set for the rest of the game: darkness and futility. Consider the main themes of Final Fantasy I (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lViSeukzQOQ), II (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xktPLOC6e6Y), III (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4zZLvipgc2Q), IV (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YKqFz5IZSvM), V (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-5yMcE58EA), and VI (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=joRZL671Esk) and you can see the difference. Even in the slower themes before this game, there was a steady and prominent bass keeping things moving. In contrast, the hopefulness in VII’s music (like when it takes a romantic turn around the :52 mark) is still couched in sadness. As you’re walking across the dark, often barren, industrial landscape, it’s hard to feel optimistic about your mission, visiting towns (Costa Del Sol and the Gold Saucer aside) with themes equally slow, sleepy, and/or melancholy. As topopoz said, this may be Uematsu’s most consistent soundtrack by maintaining its mood and instrumentation for the entire game. And as the game’s designers said, because of that, this game has an overriding feeling of light emerging from vast darkness.
Gonna hold off voting again until I get a chance to listen to both of them all the way through.

The tone of the two games is very different as previously discussed, and both games' tones are very well-reflected in their respective soundtracks. And now for the final! The last fight was extremely close, but VII had too many votes in the beginning for VIII to overcome. That means all that's left are the two pillars of the debate over the best Final Fantasy game. I guess this shows how important music is in elevating a game into that conversation. So let's see who wins. It's sprites vs. polygons. Kefka vs. Sephiroth. "Son of a submariner" vs. "Where's its %$@#ing head?" In a word, this (

And the winner of the Nobuo Uematsu battle is
Final Fantasy VI (
http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=B89C65A475B8B0CA)!
(1994)
What can I say that hasnt already been said? This soundtrack is a masterpiece. The unusually high number of character themes and clever deployment of leitmotifs throughout the soundtrack are just the first admirable facets of this work. There is a level of attention to detail throughout the soundtrack that is remarkable given the mishmash variety of occupations, backgrounds, cultures, and events in the game, and if the soundtrack suffers any from its broad scope, it at least makes a compelling attempt to resolve those tensions in the staggering finale, in which most of the games themes are interwoven seamlessly into one piece.
Fun Fact: The English translation of the game was done by one man, Ted Woolsey, in just 30 days despite the necessity of many script changes to remove cursing, violence, religious references, and sexuality.
Record: 6-1, 7-2, 8-0, 8-3
Well, that was another great battle. Thanks to all of you who voted! I hope you enjoyed it.
Well continue with NES soundtracks and vote on the next battle very soon.
Just a reminder: if you have an idea for a theme that youd like to do, shoot me a PM. Im open to anything. Also, you can see and make suggestions on the themes Ive already worked on at our VGM Rumble Group, found here (

Okay. We're continuing the NES soundtracks rumble below. But you also need to put in a second vote for one or more of the rumble ideas. Besides the one youd most enjoy doing, also mention any other rumbles that youd be interested in. One thing to consider: Szczepan put forth an idea in this post (
http://forums.ffshrine.org/showpost.php?p=1389648&postcount=722) that I wouldnt be opposed tothat is, to finish the NES Soundtracks rumble by itself (which would take about 3 weeks) and then start two new rumbles simultaneously. However, either way is fine with me: sticking with the NES or adding a new rumble now. As always, majority rules.

Deciding the Next Rumble Rumble
More details about each can be found here (

1) The Best of the SNES 64 soundtracks
2) The Best of the Genesis 64 soundtracks
3) The Best of Mega Man 32 songs
4) The Best of Suikoden 32 songs
5) None (we'd focus on the NES rumble and do 2 fights at a time instead of 1)
Im happy with whatever we do, so Im only going to vote for an NES soundtrack: Blaster Master.

Also I think we should do some Genesis sountracks, because it didn't get as much attention as the SNES so the soundtracks would be a great thing to get to know for us all.
The Super Nintendo is pretty old itself but a lot of the soundtracks stood out and we know about them even today. Can't say the same about the Genesis though.

Wow!! That looks like it is pretty faithful to the original, but a totally new game at the same time...I just might dust off my Wii and buy this one. I'm not sure how I feel about the club remix of the stage 1 theme heard in that video, but if it keeps a good bit of the original music (whether remixed or not) , it wins my vote!! Looks like it's taking a leaf from the book of Contra and Castlevania Rebirth, with that new twist on the familiar, SNES+ style (the former is brilliant btw, the latter less so). I'll be downloading for sure. Love the original!

Okey doke. First, weve got Blaster Master destroying Chip n Dale (10-1). Second, weve got Szczepans Proposition winning. So well finish the NES Soundtracks rumble, and then more than likely start the Genesis or SNES rumble next, plus maybe something else. I think this is a good plan. I just checked, and we started the NES rumble on 10-5-09. That was four months ago! 0_0. I can't believe it's been that long. Makes sense why my Battle of Olympus link no longer worked. Well, to echo Smarty, we've got a tie again. It's 6-6 between Mike Tyson's Punch Out and Silver Surfer. So we're going to sudden death, where the next vote will determine the winner, and then voting for this round will be over.
