Off topic, but as far as movies go I definitely recommend you watch Demon Seed from 1977. Interesting sci-fi horror and memorable for the absolutely bonkers stuff that happens close to the end. Don't spoil yourself guys, you're gonna want to see your jaw hit the floor.

I usually do that during the semifinals, but I'm crushed by work right now. :( So I decided to only do a write-up for the winner. Can't even vote until I get some time to listen to both soundtracks again.

Final Fantasy Tactics

I actually hadn't listened to the soundtrack release of Vagrant Story before and it is such a better listening experience than the gamerip i've gotten used to with all the A,B,C and D versions. After ten more times through the soundtrack in a year or so I may change my mind, but not for now. I really enjoyed my listen of the soundtrack this time though.

And the winner of the Hitoshi Sakimoto battle is

Vagrant Story (http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL49D6F5F3FC29A278)!
by Hitoshi Sakimoto (2000)

Here is Sakimoto forcefully staking his claim as a major composer. It's a smooth transition from Tactics in terms of mood and instrumentation. But the compositions have several qualities to intensify what Sakimoto had previously accomplished. The density of the strings, chimes, brass, and woodwinds working together, coupled with the slow and sometimes subtle development of the melodies, gives the soundtrack a muddy, sleepy feel that was not common in video game music. Equally surprising are the moments when the music gearshifts suddenly into industrial breakbeats, echoing rim shots, and Twilight Zone-inspired synth lines, only to drop out into gorgeous plucked arpeggios or a wash of violins resolving the music's aggression. This soundtrack is forceful, dark, often militaristic, but also quite beautiful. Because of that, theres an air of mystique and experimentation that seeps into this and every subsequent soundtrack Sakimoto has contributed to, whether it takes the form of a surprising harp glissando in the middle of an electronic piece, a Vangelis bass line in the middle of a flute solo, or a mournful trumpet rising out of a battle theme. He has the skills to make complex music accessible to a wide audience, and does so here maybe better than on any other soundtrack he has composed.

Bonus: Is Vagrant Story set in Ivalice? The writer/director/producer/designer used to say yes. Now he says no (http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Vagrant_Story#Relation_to_Final_Fantasy) (Matsuno's twitter (http://twitter.com/#!/YasumiMatsuno/status/85846703474872321)).

Bonus 2: Test your trivia knowledge (http://www.funtrivia.com/playquiz/quiz5768069d288.html) about the game.

Bonus 3: Vagrant Story is our third two-rumble winner now that it has won the PS1 and Sakimoto rumbles. The other members of the two-win club are Sonic (the un-themed first rumble and Genesis) and Final Fantasy VI (Uematsu and SNES).

Record: 3-1, 5-0, 5-1, 4-3

Well, that was another great battle. Thanks to all of you who voted! I hope you enjoyed it.

Just a reminder: if you have an idea for a theme that youd like to do, post it on our group page (http://forums.ffshrine.org/group.php?groupid=20), where you can also see and make suggestions on the themes weve already worked on.

There was a Fan-Letter Book made last year that was sended for his Birthday...

I'm really happy seeing Vagrant Story having won, PS1 and the Rumble of it's own creator.
And I'm also really happy to be of good use on building this Rumble. It makes me feel great.

My votes are for Okami and Klonoa 2. But I really like all four soundtracks here. Comes down to little details. If you have a chance, check out all four. They're completely different, but probably each one will have at least one song worth putting on a playlist.

Nostalgia note: Both Northern Country Kamui (http://forums.ffshrine.org/f63/official-video-game-music-rumble-66118/#post1253578) and Dragon Palace (http://forums.ffshrine.org/f63/official-video-game-music-rumble-66118/5.html#post1312683) hearken back to the early days of the rumble. Thanks arthurgolden, it feels good to be back! ;_;7

Okami beats Shinobi for me. Its melancholy traditional music score is so striking, especially for a video game. Although hearing Shinobi's soundtrack has gotten me excited for the 3DS game.

I hate to compare these other two soundtracks, but I'd give it to Klonoa 2 mainly for its mellow tone. The score reminded me of the music in games like Croc and Donkey Kong Country 2.

All four soundtracks are really some of the best work from the last generation IMO.

I don't care if this is double post, but you should all know this:

Currently Arthurgolden has all his permissions to use his account blocked because of the recent incidents on the forum.

I've sended a message to the Admins to check on this so that we can all continue with the Rumble peacefully.

Hello there people.

There's been some incidents apparently here.

And Arthurgolden requested personally if you could check the situation with his account.

Textually his problem is:

"Well...shit. I've got white forums, too, but I can't post on top of that. The reply box doesn't show up, and at the bottom of my page it says,
* You may not post new threads
* You may not post replies
* You may not post attachments
* You may not edit your posts"

We all at the VGM Music Rumble Group would appreciate if this could be fixed.

Thanks in Advance

Topopoz.

I'll assume that some of you can be on the same situation. Marceline replied that the issue could be related to the info found on this Thread:

Thread 54246

In short what you can find in the Thread is the following instructions provided by Marceline:

You can ask him if he changed his email to [email protected]. If he did, have him check that email and see if there's a message from FFShrine somewhere in his spam folders. He should have an email he can use to confirm that change so that he can post as normal. If that's not his email, someone tried to compromise his account, and he'll need to change his email to the email that he'd like to use and then go through the confirmation process again.

Also:

Remember that we have a Facebook Page to keep in touch if this kind of situation is presented.

Here's the Link: https://www.facebook.com/groups/168706226538588/

Send the request.

Atta, boy! Starcraft 2 is the better multiplayer game, but nothing beats the original in terms of the campaign. You guys know how I feel about the Suikoden series, but my votes are for Rule of Rose and Katamari Damacy. There's so much to say about Rule of Rose--from the music itself (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rule_of_Rose#Development) (another brilliant score by the same guy who did Skies of Arcadia!) to all the brouhaha about the game's sexual content (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rule_of_Rose#Controversy). Controversy aside (I've never played the game), the soundtrack is the kind of thing I'd point to and say video games need more of this.

The idea of moving the rumble has been suggested before. I've talked with a couple people through PM about it. And I'm always open to suggestions; you guys know that. The consistent problem is that we haven't been able to come up with a better solution. For now, my thought process is to stick with the Shrine and see if these problems clear up. I don't know. Technically speaking, I think BG&E is way ahead. More variety and very good execution (having played the game I can say it fits the atmosphere as well). But, Rule of Rose has so much soul, man. (Who is that singing A Love Suicide? I couldn't find any info.). Coin flip says Rule of Rose, so let it be that, I wouldn't mind either getting ahead.

Silent Hill 2 Even though I really like the precursor legacy, SH2 is in a whole other league.

Semifinals, Fight 1

Okami by Masami Ueda, Hiroshi Yamaguchi, Hiroyuki Hamada, Rei Kondo, and Akari Groves (2006)
Playing with Ushiwaka (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hY-jMfZ1uDk), Agata Forest (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MlTNNHAa0rk), Kushinadas Determination (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NtXEjrnSfrk), Dragon Palace (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_cYPVpVUkw), Northern Country Kamui (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xc-E_o5Xu5k)
-----> Full soundtrack (http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1AC584471FD4F040)

It's difficult to pick a few songs from the five-CD Okami soundtrack to single out. The breadth of beauty within each piece, the technical mastery, and the intensity of emotion runs deep. Take "Dragon Palace," a calm, seemingly simple song, using sustained notes in the background to lend a dreamy quality to the music. But in the second section, the koto/harp/vocal patches give way abruptly to a quick arpeggiated harp part, a flute melody, and slightly piercing strings that, strangely, are equally suited to a moment of quick action or the slow rise and fall of objects in the water. This is one of many examples of the way the composers of Okami masterfully took rock structures and traditional koto and flute music and fused them together into beautiful pieces. Equally stunning is "Northern Country Kamui." The second half of a song, this piece fits scenes of galloping over the plains quite well. The melody trades off between the flutes and brass over a surprisingly heavy percussion, and the result is a song that is distinctly Eastern while also almost mysteriously appropriate for the closing credits of a spaghetti western. This interweaving of genres is true of the entire soundtrack, which has been described as a startling fusion of techno tracks and traditional flute, shamisen and koto music. The composers attempt to refine Jpop into tasteful compositions, while pumping some life into the traditionally funereal kabuki fare, attaining surprisingly successful results. The soundtrack takes a stab at every Japanese genre in arm's reach, for the most part succeeding brilliantly. No surprise then that Okami won Best Score at the 2008 BAFTA Video Games Awards.

vs.

Silent Hill 3 by Akira Yamaoka (2003)
Breeze in Monochrome Night (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHZnrGaEBdg), Sickness Until Foolish Death (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L-Frwgx_MKc), Please Love Me Once More (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sYFaoxkXWZc), Maternal Heart (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K1DjgY6WrqY), Letter from the Lost Days (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SBY_fUpmnQ)
-----> Full soundtrack (http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1365C9574130D253)

Out of the depths of a hellish landscape comes Silent Hill 3. Reverb, echo, and delay effects cremate Yamaokas loops, giving them a distant, moaning, crackling quality thats haunting, but not as haunting as the moments when his organ or guitar snuffs them out and begins the song proper. Its a mistake to think a horror soundtrack should merely consist of sustained violins and sudden loud noises. Monsters and victims arent interesting unless they have motivation, and motivation is based on yearning. What Yamaoka does is compensate for the weaknesses in a story by suggesting a depth of longing in the characters that, were it absent, would have kept these games from ever reaching their international stature. Silent Hill 3 is Akira Yamaoka. He created that world as much as the writing department, the art department, the 3-D modeling department, or the director. The subtleties in tone, timbre, instrumentation, and pitch in his music rival the works of the greatest composers in video game music. He managed somehow to marry a driving electronica aesthetic with rotary guitars, jazz organs, mellotrons, ambient noise, dissonant strings, gorgeous keyboard counter-melodies, and the voice of Mary Elizabeth McGlynn, who imbues the ghostly songs with a living, breathing core. Though it may be difficult to identify each piece on a Silent Hill soundtrack by itself, they are all parts of a whole, and when you finish one of Yamaoka's albums you will feel the full weight of the characters' burdens and the ultimate, ambiguous release from his world that will keep you coming back.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Semifinals, Fight 2

Final Fantasy XII by Hitoshi Sakimoto, Masaharu Iwata, Hayato Matsuo, and Nobuo Uematsu (2006)
Royal City Rabanastre (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aM0IJPV-8PY), Esper Battle (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=COG3R3Km-Zk), Forgotten Capital (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVoEKWckLz0), To the Gods' Place (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c79uOLby7H8), Sky Fortress Bahamut (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XOehlpV_G8c)
-----> Full soundtrack (http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL4253C5C473A12A64)

Perhaps no Final Fantasy soundtrack is as much a lightning rod for debate as Final Fantasy XII. Composed mainly by Hitoshi Sakimoto, it diverts significantly from Uematsus musical sensibilities, focusing on form and texture as much as melodyand making many enemies in the process. Critics have said it contains too much filler; fans have called it unmemorable. However, is this merely a reflection of classical musics place in our present-day global culture? In my mind, there is nothing boring or bloodless about the soundtrack. It seems to be a style preference that pushes people away. True, many songs do not follow the immediately fulfilling verse/chorus rock structure found in so much of Uematsus music. But composers have de-emphasized melody before; even composers of video game music have de-emphasized melody before. Hip Tanaka did so all the way back in 1986 with Metroid. Listen to the Loop Demo and how Sakimoto stamps out his predecessors most acclaimed melody with a violent and kinetic trumpet fanfare, then goes into full attack mode with Esper Battle and races on with The Phon Coast. The cinematic quality to Signs of a Change, the long tradition of city themes honored and advanced in Royal City Rabanastre, and the large collection of classic Sakimoto string techniques brought to greater, more faithful execution on this game because of Squares larger budgetall acknowledge the Final Fantasy tradition and give its palette more colors. Undoubtedly, Sakimoto did his job. Otherwise, people wouldnt debate the music so much.

vs.

Shadow of the Colossus by Kow Otani (2005)
The Opened Way (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GrFL2zPc2uk), The Farthest Land (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ix38fnllF3Y), Awesome Power (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_F-vB9RudQs), Counterattack (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=svRZz5t-6uU), A Sad Farewell (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQpqsQ5icRE)
-----> Full soundtrack (http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL4B77AB01B4C2C5F8)

Even superlatives seem inadequate in describing the soundtrack for Shadow of the Colossus. It makes one want to use words typically phased out of common speech, like majestic. The game shows what is possible if you give an outstanding game development team and an outstanding composer un-compromised direction in their artistic vision. There are several pieces from the soundtrack that could rattle the teeth out of your head, but beyond capturing terror, exhaustion, and fragility all in one plunging brass melody (no small feat itself), the soundtrack also gives the listener one of the greatest video game themes for one of video games' greatest sidekicks. "Swift Horse" stands out for teaching us what it sounds like to charge a twenty-story-tall colossus without fear and gives us a reason to believe in music's power. You could say the same about half the tracks. Shadow of the Colossus won "Soundtrack of the Year" in Electronic Gaming Monthly but is, in my mind, in the top ten for greatest video game soundtracks on any console. After seven years and hundreds of listens, it hasn't lost one iota of its power.

My votes are for Silent Hill 3 and Shadow of the Colossus. I don't think I've ever changed my vote as many times as I have for the first fight here.

Bonus 3: The game is referenced multiple times in the 2007 film Reign Over Me (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0490204/). Deciding the Next Rumble Rumble

Vote for what you'd most like to do. Its better to put down several so that I know which theme would appeal to the largest number of people. As always, majority rules.

More details about each rumble can be found here (http://forums.ffshrine.org/groups/vgm-rumble-group-procrastination-station/). After a decision is made, we'll go through a process of finalizing the song/soundtrack list and then get it going asap.

1) The Composers Rumble 64 composers Started December 2010

2) The Best of The Legend of Zelda 128 songs Started February 2011

arthurgolden

Pretty clear case for composers then. That will be a 64-composer rumble with five songs apiece, each from a different soundtrack.

Second question: Final Fantasy and Zelda both got 2 votes, tying them for second place. We could do composers and one of those two--and I think it'd have to be Final Fantasy since it's ready to go and Zelda still needs some work.

Do you all want to do composers and Final Fantasy at the same time?

My thoughts: the composers rumble is going to have a ton of variety in every fight and will include many Final Fantasy soundtracks. Maybe we should just do composers, unless somebody feels strongly that they wouldn't be that interested in participating if it was just one theme.

How about this? We only do composers for now till we finish it, and then after we're done with that, Zelda will be ready and we can do it and FF back to back.

I second Smarty's idea.

Sounds good. I'm going to be working on this bit by bit over the next few days. Will post soon.

Time to finalize the list before we start the rumble.

Below is the list of 64 composers. This upcoming rumble will determine who the greatest composer in video game music is. To make that determination, a composer must have excellent work on five different soundtracks. So each composer on the list below has five soundtracks next to his/her name. Each composer's name is linked to a list of their works.

For each soundtrack listed, we need ONE representative song. If you see a soundtrack you like, reply with a YouTube link to your favorite song off that soundtrack. I will choose the songs for the leftovers. Please help me out by giving some recommendations yourself. 64 soundtracks x 5 songs = 320 songs. No telling how long it would take me to pick out that many. Plus, it's more fun if the rumble represents what the group likes, instead of what only I like.

I will edit in links as they come in.

ill just say this now: for Tenpei Sato to not be in this rumble is just...sad. he's really made some great music since the early days of Disgaea and they still stand strong to this day. other good soundtracks include Phantom Brave and La Pucelle: Tactics.

Constructive comments are welcome. If you see a name that you think Sato should replace, then let me know. The discussion about who should be in this rumble has gone on for a year and a half. Everyone was welcome to join in it on the group page (http://forums.ffshrine.org/groups/vgm-rumble-group-procrastination-station/). If you didn't, but you see an exclusion now that you feel strongly about, then offer a revision strategy.

Also, if you see a soundtrack you like in the above lists, reply with a YouTube link to your favorite song off that soundtrack. That would help me out immensely.

I would say Stuart Chatwood. mainly cuz the majority of those games didnt do so well.

Well, we're judging the quality of the music--not how well the games sold. Stuart Chatwood has been suggested by a couple people, so he's gotta stay in. I'll tell you what, though. If you list five standout soundtracks by Tenpei Sato (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tenpei_Sato) and send a YouTube link to one song off each soundtrack to represent his best work, I'll find a place for him.

In the meantime, I will continue adding song links as frequently as I can. I really didn't expect everyone's silence on this since so many people pushed for these composers and specific soundtracks, too. After Tuesday, I'll be completely done with the semester and will be able to dedicate some time every day to finishing this.

We're getting close. I've spent an hour each day adding links. This is by far the most ambitious rumble we've ever done, with the most research involved, so I have to do a lot of fact-checking, which is slowing things down. But we will start soon, and this should end up being the best rumble we've ever done.

If anyone wants to help me add links, we can start even sooner.

@aces: Thanks for the links. I'll get Sato in there.

@Smarty: If you could choose three or four of the composers on the following list and link each soundtrack title to one song off that soundtrack, that would be awesome:

Done!

You can see the full list here (http://forums.ffshrine.org/f63/official-video-game-music-rumble-66118/60.html#post1986905) (a couple posts above this one).

I'm not dead set on those five soundtracks for each composer either. If you have a different soundtrack you want to use, go for it. There have been occasional mistakes in the list, so double check anything you're not sure of with vgmdb.net. I've even had to watch YouTube videos of the credits sequence for certain games.

We are back in action! You'll notice there are five links under each composer's picture. The first link takes you to a five-song playlist with each song representing a different soundtrack from that composer's career. Those will help give you a sense of a composer's style and major works, especially if you're not all that familiar with those things. The second link brings you to a page with a brief biography of the composer. The third link sends you to vgmdb where you can see which of the composer's albums have been commercially released. The fourth link allows you to read through any interviews the composer has done. And the fifth link takes you to a social media page for the composer--either Facebook or Twitter. Wherever possible, I have linked to an official page or website. All told, there were 640 links to gather for this rumble, making it by far the most extensive, most detailed, most comprehensive rumble we've ever done. There is something for everybody here, and I hope you enjoy it! I had fun finding pictures of the composers, many of whom I'd admired for many years without even knowing what they looked like. As we go along, please share additional songs, pictures, or links for these composers if you have any. :D

This first fight demonstrates something that is going to be a recurring trend: extremely talented composers getting squashed by the celebrities of the vgm world. If it's true that every one of our composers in this rumble has a definable musical sensibility (and I think that will be true), then Oshima is a quiet composer. She is very adept at wringing memorable melodies out of a few instrumental parts, which is a natural byproduct of having worked in the early days of video games. One example out of many is the Genghis Khan 2 intro, which at first can seem underwhelming because of the synths and the low volume and the sparseness, but eventually becomes a pensive, world-weary, march into battle.

On the other hand, we've got one of the all-time greats and some of his all-time classic compositions. A Genghis Khan 2 intro simply can't stand up to the doubled flute and violin motif from Time's Scar, or the entrancing gamelan in Time's Circuits, or the beautiful arrangement of June Mermaid--much less the complete soundtracks those songs represent. Mitsuda is so good, he Rick Roll'd us with Robos Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UZ8xce9HtD8) and we didnt even care.

In the second fight, we have the man behind Guilty Gear's guitars (born in South Africa, which I didn't know) and Square's backup composer, who worked in small roles or on small IPs until Front Mission 2 and Final Fantasy X-2 gave her a chance to shine. While Ishiwatari is aggressive with his guitars, emphasizing virtuosity and technical perfection, Matsueda is jazzy and a little funky, typically using organ and wah guitars. They definitely have different ideas about how to approach a battle theme, and while you could criticize Ishiwatari for doing the same thing over and over, you could also criticize Matsueda for being inconsistent with the quality of her melodies, which is what her music puts an emphasis on. Tough call.

My votes are for Yasunori Mitsuda and Daisuke Ishiwatari.

Huelsbeck is one of the kings of the the Commodore and Amiga, beginning his career as a teenager working roughly alongside the NES era with much better hardware, some of which he designed himself. He's most often associated with The Great Giana Sisters (an infamous Super Mario Bros. rip-off) and the Turrican series. But since the launches of the Symphonic Game Music Concert series and Arnie Roth's projects, Huelsbeck's music for Apidya and R-Type (the Amiga and Commodore versions) has gotten recognition as well. With much of his music, you'll hear one of the hallmarks of early Commodore music--using a very quick arpeggio to create a trilling note, almost as if the note has been shot and is exploding. With the Turrican music especially, you can hear his affection for driving electronica beats and slow-building synths.

Soyo Oka's music, on the other hand, is mostly jazzy, melodic, and sleepy. Her signature works are Pilotwings and Sim City, although many people know the music for Super Mario Kart, too. The problem there is that she was so under the wing of Koji Kondo that it sounds like a Koji Kondo soundtrack, which isn't a bad thing. It's great music. Just not really the best representation of her individual voice.

Naoki Kodaka is without question one of the greatest NES composers. The soundtracks for Blaster Master, Batman, Journey to Silius, Gremlins 2, and Batman: Return of the Joker are all classics of the system that stand toe to toe with almost any other NES music. But he has drawn an incredible unlucky hand going against Yoko Shimomura in the first round. If you don't know his stuff, definitely check it out.

Yoko Shimomura is, of course, important for several reasons. As a video game composer, she ranks among the best to have ever lived. Her work spans three decades and many genres, is instantly recognizable around the world, and is consistently of a high quality. On top of that, she is a female composer who has asserted herself in a male-dominated profession, opening doors for many other female composers. On top of that, she has trained, encouraged, and influenced an entire generation of composers. It's difficult to limit her career into five representative songs because there's just so much of it that should be heard. Besides Street Fighter II, Super Mario RPG, Parasite Eve, Legend of Mana, and Kingdom Hearts, you could just as easily check out Adventures in the Magic Kingdom (no kidding), Buster Brothers, The King of Dragons, Breath of Fire, Live A Live, Front Mission, Xenoblade, and the rest of the Kingdom Hearts series. I like the five songs we've got just because you can go from one to the next and say, "Wait. The person who created Guile's Theme also created Beware the Forest Mushrooms? And Primal Eyes? And Nostalgic Song? And Dearly Beloved?" They're all so different and distinctive.

My votes are for Chris Huelsbeck and Yoko Shimomura.

Of course, topo. :D

Apologies for going long on this one. I’ll be shortening the time between fights a little bit in the future. Huelsbeck (6-1) and Shimomura (7-0) are the winners here. Thanks to everyone for including your own song recommendations to support why you think one composer should be considered over another. Keep 'em coming! Next up…

Paul Ruskay is best known for the Homeworld soundtrack, and the Homeworld soundtrack is primarily known for its inclusion of a choral arrangement of Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1dPDO3Tfab0&noredirect=1). But Ruskay is an accomplished composer unto himself, which is demonstrated by his many awards, including for his original compositions to the above soundtrack. He is all about ambience, and the world music influences he shows in his music for space dramas are comparable to Bear McCreary’s work on the Battlestar Galactica series. I tend to think Ruskay is better than McCreary. He is not a flashy composer, but the moods are so thoroughly realized that they suggest all kinds of story possibilities.

Shoji Meguro is, of course, the man behind the music for the Shin Megami Tensei series. Although he has worked on other high-profile projects, any conversation about him has to start and end with SMT. I’ve seen him called a rock composer, and while there is a lot of rock music on his soundtracks, I think that label sells him short in a terrible way. Start out with our five selections to see what I mean.

Bun Bun is another god of the NES era, like Kodaka—with a legacy tied to Capcom platformers. You may be aware of the awesomeness that is Mega Man 3’s title theme. He also worked on several show and movie tie-ins with Disney, which Capcom always seemed to hit out of the park, despite the inexcusably poor work of LJN and others on similar titles. Bun Bun’s gifts lie mainly in creating memorable melodies.

Wakai started his career as a Koji Kondo protg and impressed the right people with his collaborations on Star Fox 64, F-Zero X, and Pokemon Stadium. Pikmin was his opportunity to elbow his way to the foreground and establish himself, and that he did. Pikmin’s soundtrack is bizarre, even challenging, but creates an identity that is wholly its own with its surprising turns in melody, instrumentation, and rhythm. I’ve chosen to include more traditional selections from that series in the recommendations playlist, but I encourage everyone to check out the full soundtracks for a memorable listening experience. He is also known for his contributions (about 11 songs) to the Wind Waker soundtrack, which carry over some of the tendencies from Pikmin.

My votes are for Shoji Meguro and Hajime Wakai.
