Bit Brigade ~This entire recording is pretty awesome. The full set is played to a live run of Mega Man 2, with tracks transitioning in and out as they would in-game. (They added a few Mega Man 3 tunes to keep it from being too repetitive). This particular song isn't the most famous in the franchise, but I really like how they adapted a sort of post-rock progression to it to make the song extend through the duration of the level.

Not that i don't love Castlevania, but I'm just going on how clean the Diwa de Leon arrangement is. having never played castlevania or kirby in this mix up really hurts haha. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is tough. I had to go listen to the original version of Flow, and I was prepared to vote there if it sounded nothing like this cover. As it turns out, they're both fairly faithful to the originals. Uh uh uh I really like both of these......... Doug Perry? Maybe?
I listen to a lot of metal. I might listen to more metal than video game music. The two... don't tend to cross over well in practice. RichaadEB's execution is excellent and he keeps his eyes on the spirit of the original throughout, but a lot of the gap-bridging here just boils down to choosing the right song. The frantic-paced, spastic melodies of Touhou translate really well into power metal. I feel like if the actual game was going to have a studio-recorded soundtrack, this would be entirely appropriate.
I think this spin on Days Past is one of the most imaginative products to emerge from Konami's official library of Suikoden arrangements. Yuji Yoshino completely flipped the vibe of this track on its head while transforming it into the genre of music Miki Higashino claims influenced her composition most.
Toughest call of the 1st round so far for me, but I'm taking RichaadEB.

Every once in a while, I'll be listening to a game soundtrack and go "Wait, I know I've heard this before." It's an easy feeling to dismiss; it's normal for a franchise to revisit key tracks. Occasionally you'll find a tune sneak over into a completely new venue. Hirokazu Tanaka constantly reenvisioned his staple jingles for unrelated games. Not long ago I noticed that a Ryuji Sasai melody from 1989 reemerged in Final Fantasy Mystic Quest. But this has to be one of the biggest "wait what" moments for me in a while:
February 17th, 2016, Masahiro Ikariko's Pleasure of Tension (
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PNrEkiDulWU) for Konami's 1988 visual novel Snatcher is eliminated in the final round of my custom rumble.
March 28th, 2016, Tears Of... (
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2UJOl1P4KQw) for Konami's 1999 survival classic Silent Hill debuts in the Akira Yamaoka rumble, which it goes on to win.
And we never noticed they were the same song.

I for one love the fact each cover is built up with various instruments doing the part. Arthur's one is so difficult 'cause they really sound so similar... Not in a bad way. I just mean that the melody is so soothing in both pieces. That being said I voted Banjo before so i'll go with that one. Urk!
I really liked the take on the suikoden song... and the metal cover of the touhou song (having never played it) is also really awesome. This is another difficult decision. I personally love the celtic take on the suikoden song because like Shad said, it flips the overall tune on its head and I could listen to it forever haha. Yuji Yoshino it is

The Andrew Thompson track is one of the most basic options I threw in here. He does so many covers well that it was hard to not include him, and Meridian Dance feels like a relatively under-covered track relative to the popularity of the score.
Zuntata is... something quite different. Before you let the recording quality turn you off, please consider that there wasn't quite as high of a demand for live video game music covers in 1990. Moreover, this isn't a true "cover". It's the real deal. Zuntata was Taito's house band, and I'm pretty sure that's original composer Hisayoshi Ogura jamming on the keyboards.

PPF - I was hoping this one would make it. It's so much fun especially with him blowing bubbles lol. I'm going to take Arthur's word and not look up what the acronym stands for, but I will look up their other stuff.
Zutana - oh boy, Zutana is definitely something different. Such 80's much New Wave. I bet it would've been even more awesome at the time it came out.
PPF - Hot Head Bop dominated the final against Banjo Guy Ollie - Beautiful Golden City 4-0 to become our 40th rumble winner. Zuntata also advanced 3-1.
And now we will be kicking off something pretty special, I think.
In case you didn't happen to notice, we're just a little over a month away from this game's 10 year anniversary.
What better way to celebrate that than to determine the grand champion of them all? I welcome you to:
Battle 42: Anniversary Edition
I wanted to keep a lot of options on the table here, while acknowledging that both tastes and the participant base can change significantly over the course of a decade. With that in mind, we'll be reviving the four semi-finalists of every single-track rumble. Here's how it's going to work:
Round 1: The two losing tracks of each semi-final square off. Think of it like a match to determine third place, except the winners get a lifeline to move on.
Round 2: Each (21) rumble winner will face a randomly selected third place seed from a different contest (22), while finalists (21) are randomly paired against each other. One third place contestant chosen randomly between entries 43-45(*) will face a finalist to even the numbers.
Round 3: The remaining 32 tracks will be randomly paired by the following method: Winners are randomly paired against 3rd seeds not representing the same contest until all options are exhausted. Repeat for 2nd seed. Any leftover winners face each other. If remaining 2nd and 3rd seeds outnumber remaining winners, apply the same standards for 2nd seeds (face 3rds where possible; entries from the same contest never face each other).
Total entries: 83
*The numbers did not add up perfectly on account of some tracks appearing in multiple semi-finals. To accommodate this, three 3rd seeds were granted a first round bye based on the unique circumstances of their original losses. (Two were eliminated on a coin flip and one reached the semis in two separate contests but never became a finalist.) Additionally, two semi-final pairings will not be representing the same contest. This resulted in 81 entries, with 83 needed to proceed to a round of 64. The final two entries will be tracks that never accomplished jack. I asked Arthur to select a song that lost early in a contest to have one last shot at glory, and I did the same.
Hope you all enjoy, and thanks for hanging around. It's your continued participation that allows us to keep running this.

Super Castlevania IV - Clockwork Mansion
Motoaki Furukawa & Koichi Namiki - My Love
P.S. If you want a quick sense of how much music we've covered over the years, just scroll down the OP of this thread.
Clockwork Mansion. My what a weird tune. It took a few spins for my head to parse whether this was creepy or just chaotic, but I resolved on the former. I can definitely feel the Castlevania atmosphere being set in this one. Vampire Killer is a catchy classic, but the NES tones leave it a lot less gripping.
Policenauts and Soul Blader squaring off in the first round is interesting because both tracks are so closely linked to their in-game scores. Kazz Toyama's arrangement of A Night Without a Lover is included on the original soundtrack, and it only fails to appear as the ending credit theme because the technology at the time did not allow for it. It is entirely faithful to the 16 bit version, and I tend to think of it as how the song was intended to be heard all along. In fact, while no credits are presented for who is singing on this cut, I think it is probably Takekawa himself. That appears to be his primary profession.
Motoaki Furukawa actually composed a lot of the original Policenauts soundtrack. I happened to choose a cut questionably credited to La Nakamur (I am not sure how my research while tagging the files lead me to this--he is not even mentioned on the original soundtrack), but Furukawa was directly involved in creating the original score. Moreover, like the Soul Blader number, it is contemporary to its title, pre-dating the widespread popularity of game music at least in the west.

Off-topic and off-brand from our normal discussions, but interesting nonetheless: Did you know there was a small cult in the early 2000s where each member believed they were the incarnation of a FF7 character? And when they began in-fighting, a member broke off and started a new cult where each member believed they were the incarnation of a Suikoden character? The full, long, complex, investigative story (
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lFRjrLmc_4c). Somehow, as the only person I knew with a copy of Suikoden, and therefore someone who spent a lot of time looking up Suikoden websites in this timeframe to talk about the game, I completely missed all of this.
The FF7 cult part sounds vaguely familiar haha. Maybe I'll read it in a bit.

Off-topic: Lena Raine, the composer for Celeste and ESC, was recently asked (
https://www.dummymag.com/10-best/10-best-female-video-game-composers-lena-raine/) for her top ten list of female vgm composers. I found her answers fascinating and very different from my own. Here would be mine:
Yoko Shimomura
Miki Higashino
Michiru Yamane
Manaka Kataoka
Soyo Oka
Manami Matsumae
Minako Hamano
Yoshino Aoki
Harumi Fujita
Kinuyo Yamashita
*I can't include Yoko Kanno because of the credible claims of plagiarism against her (some of them made by me), as well as the fact that she often releases music under her name that was outsourced to a team of other composers. That said, she has made music that is absolutely great.
I also ran across this Archive.org video offering a sampler (
https://archive.org/details/HallOfFameFemaleComposersOfVideoGameMusic) of vgm by different female composers.

I'm having a surprisingly hard time coming up with 10 names without having to consult my index of composer credits. Miki Higashino, Michiru Yamane, Yoko Shimomura, and Soyo Oka exhaust the list of names that immediately popped into my head who I can cite more than one game by.
As for my votes, Legends of Azeroth and Malcura.

Happy 10th anniversary to the rumble! A decade ago, I started this thread sitting in a hotel room before my brother's wedding. Today, my wife and I are visiting him, his wife, and their three (!) kids. Crazy. In that same timespan, I know some of you have had kids, finished college, completed military service, started careers and second careers, moved, returned home, lost and gained, and through it all stuck with us. I will post something more substantial when I get back. But as a starting note, thank you all for your contributions to the community and for the time you've given to this thread. I don't take it for granted. You have made this a fun and rewarding experience through all of these years. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I hope life is treating you well. More soon.

Hahaha. Here we go!
Shadow of the Colossus - Swift Horse - For my money, this is the greatest "riding a horse" song in vgm history. Unfortunately, it's going against the greatest "taking a bath" song in vgm history. And while the second of those experiences is more relatable to me (I've only ridden one horse in my life, and it immediately sat down in a ditch), I'd like to think the experience could be as exciting and grandiose as Kow Otani's making it out to be.
Battle Kid 2 - $1966 Volt Tower - A lot of NARFNra's picks were intended to be lesser celebrated songs from well known soundtracks (Gimmick! being a recent and conspicuous example of that), but Battle Kid 2 falls outside that mold. I hadn't heard anything off the second game's soundtrack before and really like this.

Suikoden ~~In a lot of ways, this is the defining song of the Suikoden franchise to me. Toran Castle was an incredibly imaginative concept for a home base. On the main land you're an underdog fighting an empire, but your home base is an unassailable island fortress with all the adventurous air of a pirate's cove. It was your private paradise, matched in art and concept with a carefree, optimistic, distinctly oceanic theme song. Tropical Bath is certainly not the most in-game accessible variation on this tune. It comes as a bit of an Easter egg, encountered only after you've unlocked a lot of your castle's secrets. And just as your castle feels more and more alive the further you unlock it, the theme expands to its most vibrant variation. The first time I heard it 20-some years ago it struck me that way, and I ultimately ended up entering it into the Suikoden rumble in place of the much more familiar Island Fortress variation. The added echo, birds, and running water really flush out the ambience of the world you build for yourself, and the immersiveness of the Toran Castle experience (at least for its day) was the first hook into what ultimately became my all time favorite video game franchise.

Off-off-topic (comes up in the video): I keep seeing people insist that the "Bros." in "Super Mario Bros." has always been pronounced "Bros" instead of "Brothers." I don't care if they prefer the alternate pronunciation, but it's pretty easy to prove that it was "Brothers" throughout the 80s and 90s, if not the 00s as well.
Wait, people actually say "Super Mario Bros" now?

Really interesting piece on memorable game music. One of those new feel soundtracks which I have to mention is Final Fantasy X. Talk about emotional. I still love listening to the music because it communicates that journey you're on. I can't recall a leit-motif of the whole game, but will have to listen again to see why it is that I'm drawn to it.
Edit: I think it will have something to do with the voice acting.

Btw, i just saw a post in a ff group im in on facebook which sounds altogether like that video you posted arthur. Good job. If you hadn't posted it I might have reacted totally differently to what he was saying (he was basically saying all Masayoshi Soken's songs are garbage)
Better say some more before it sounds like i'm just wanting my voice to be heard.
He mentioned that "none of the songs are memorable"
and "[in the golden age Uematsu] had technical limitations to deal with"
in contrast Soken "throws music to the wall and hopes it sticks [like paint]"
and comparing it to hardcore rock and symphonic rock "the former had well constructed melodies for instrument and vocalists" while the latter "try to disguise their inability to create good melodies"
My point is I wonder what he would be saying if He accepted that it's upto opinion and attempted to hear the emotion behind the songs. I'm just curious cause I haven't actually done this at all so far. But I deeply connect with Soken's music even though it doesn't, like he said, have incredible melodies
Here's a thought. Maybe I could start a Masayoshi Soken rumble and we can discuss the songs!

Danganronpa is my second favorite game franchise after Suikoden. The series has a significant cult following that overlaps heavily with the Mafia/Werewolf community for conceptual similarities. It's a sequence of visual novels in which you are basically trapped on an island with your friends and forced to kill each other while figuring out who each victim's killer is. Masafumi Takada, who has composed every installment of the franchise, does a fantastic job of exploiting catoony melodies, cheesy cliches, and a chip aesthetic to exacerbate the player's sense of futility. There's nothing happy about any of this; the most optimistic tunes frequently appear in the most morbid moments to rub salt into the wound. You're trapped in a killing game where your life and your friendships are meaningless. Welcome to Despair Academy.
Regarding track selection, many of the franchise's baseline themes are established in the first installment. Takada builds off of his own works to progress the series, and a lot of songs that sound completely distinct turn out to be based on the same melody when you listen to them side-by-side. It was hard to detect some of the overlap, and while I tried to weed out songs that were too essentially similar, I can't promise I caught them all. Moreover, a few last minute catches left me with some open slots, so I opted to include a small selection of tracks from the anime. I don't think you would be able to tell which are which without peeking. The composer and the objectives are consistent. The anime is, moreover, a critical installment in the series. It belongs here, I think.
If you're interested in rolling through it, sequence is essential. Ultra Despair Girls can be skipped with minimal loss, and it's pretty universally regarded as the weakest point in the franchise (though I did enjoy most of it). V3 doesn't have to be played last, but it probably should be. 1, 2, and 3 absolutely must be experienced in order, and 3 has its own quirks (the official release excludes one of the most essential episodes, available for free online), so if you get that far, ask first. Never Google anything ever even if it feels benign or spoilers will crush your soul.
Random.org saw fit to pair the opening track of the first game with a closing tune of the last for match 1, so that's an interesting juxtaposition out the gate.

Snatcher - Pleasure of Tension
Danganronpa V3 - Trial END - I'd heard the main theme before, but not this one. Like 'em both.
Decisive Battle is one of my favorites, but we have an annual game for that. Snatcher is great too.
The DR intro theme is ok, but it doesn't actually have much in-game relevance. Trial END is a reocurring theme that delivers the end-game experience well. You have survived, but did you really "win"?

Shinra Banshou was, in a bizarre coincidence, eliminated by this melody in it's original appearance. As much as I love Yamaoka's grim spin on Pleasure of Tension from Snatcher, I like the underdog entry more here.
Old World Order is the final incarnation of a reoccurring tune throughout the franchise. This version is one of the few songs in the game meant to feel victorious with no strings attached.

Discussion Scrum has attained near meme status within the DR fan base for being so over-the-top dramatic in the silliest component of the franchise. It's the perfect audio rendition of what a Danganronpa class trial is all about. This is so ridiculous and bad but god help me I'm really enjoying it. But for all Discussion Scrum's contextual appeal, BOX 15 is just a way more interesting song, I think.
