So far things have been really lopsided in favor of the earlier Castlevania soundtracks (if you include SOTN in that category), so itll be interesting to get some competition amongst two of the earlier ones and give Aria of Sorrow through Order of Ecclesia a break. Im going with Marble Gallery and Batman: Return of the Joker. Symphony of the Night has yet to lose a fight, and Marble Gallery is a good example of why. From the diversity of patches to the diversity of musical styles blending togetherthis is one cool track. And thats not even mentioning its catchiness. As for the NES soundtracks, I think Batman: Return of the Joker is extremely underrated. I never see it mentioned among peoples favorites despite its predecessor usually showing up on Best of the NES lists, but just take a listen. I know I keep mentioning bass lines, but this soundtrack has got some great ones. The song at 2:11 would be great with Flea.

My vote goes to Super Castlevania-IV the Cave simply because i could never figure Marble Gallery out. It sounds like a Megaman song. That was easy...
Now... Solstice vs Batman... I abstain on the grounds that both soundtracks are totally awesome in their own ways; Solstice has inventive, varied and hooking cues which keep the player interested despite the WTFmind bogging maps, while Batman is very cinematic and catching as well.

We're getting a double dose of Curse of Darkness this round--and two good songs to boot. But I'm going with Abandoned Castle for opening big and keeping the tension throughout the whole song. For the NES rumble, I'm voting for StarTropics. Although I love the work of Miki Higashino (the composer of Gradius and the Suikoden series), StarTropics seems more ambitious to me. It has some great atmospheric tracks for all of those caves and also some fun, upbeat overworld tracks, too.

Symphony of the Night has won all 4 of its fights so far, and although I love Abandoned Pit, this song deserves to move on, too. As for the NES rumble, this would be one of my ideal match-ups for the final. I think Journey to Silius can lay a claim to being the best NES soundtrack just as much as Legend of Zelda can (although the video takes a couple minutes to get to my favorite tracks). So I'm at an impasse. But I'll vote for Silius since it's most probably the underdog.

Gorgeous Lisztian watlz - elegant, romantic and haunting. Possibly my favourite track in Symphony of the Night. Imagine how ravishing it would sound played by a real orchestra :swoon: Does anyone know if such a recording exists (seems like a no-brainer)?
[Also a random digression:-
I prefer the title "Waltz of the Pearls", as it suits the character of the piece (the softly glimmering piano melody is like a string of delicate beads). I assume 'pales' is meant in the sense of stakes/'to impale'? If so, and not merely a faulty translation, perhaps "Pale Waltz" would be a more appropriate play on the word, again fitting the spectral tone (and Alucard’s complexion ;)). See article here (

This track could have been on the soundtrack for Zombies Ate My Neighbors! if that soundtrack had been a little scarier. As for SMB3, what can I say that hasnt already been said? The NES soundtracks are two of my favorites, especially, and Ive used songs from both to introduce people to vgm. Ill go with Blaster Master, though, maybe only because the bass drum and snare drum sounds on Bucky OHare never change and theyre so aggressive that it gets headache-inducing if you listen to the whole soundtrack in one go.

Listening to the songs that have made it so far, I really feel like Symphony of the Night is very over represented in the Castlevania rumble and for no good reason. There have been quite a few rumbles that I've had to make a difficult decisions between two songs that I think have been better than any that SotN has to offer. This is one of those decisions; I would take either of these over any from SotN in a heart beat. It is very difficult to vote against Castlevania II, but Repose of Souls is the best credits music in handheld gaming history in my opinion.

I like 3 songs off the W&W soundtrack—Title Screen, Mountain, Last Battle—and 9 songs off the FF soundtrack—Crystal Room, Eternal Wind, Jinn, Battle 2, Town of Water, Deep Under the Water, Let Me Know the Truth, The Invicible, and This Is the Last Battle. I am absolutely stunned at the NES battle. The Tetris soundtrack is rather rudimentary when stacked up against any Ninja Gaiden soundtrack, and Ninja Gaiden III is the best of the series in my book. Being able to choose your music is certainly a nice feature, but for me it is quality that counts, and Ninja Gaiden III: The Ancient Ship of Doom has one of the best soundtracks in the rumble. Vampire Killer -- The other one did nothing for me.
Silver Surfer -- I hadn't heard or played either of these before, and Alien 3 sounds cool for the first few tracks until you realize they are all the same. Silver Surfer doesn't have a whole lot of music, but it wins me with one track (which I have as "track 6"...sorry I don't know the name)

Wow. Two big wins for Vampire Killer (8-2) and Silver Surfer (7-0). Thanks to everyone for voting. And now, we have finally reached the semifinals! If you remember, before we started the two-rumble format, we decided it would be best to switch to Castlevania-only voting when things were winding down, so that its final would get the appropriate spotlight. We’re going to start that now. We’ll have both semifinals for Castlevania today, and then the final round starting Monday. After that, we’ll resume the NES soundtracks rumble and add in a vote for what the next rumble will be: Best of Nobuo Uematsu, Mega Man, Genesis, or SNES. So for anyone who doesn’t want to vote on the Castlevania finals, there’s plenty to talk about and do on the group page (
http://forums.ffshrine.org/group.php?groupid=20) until the NES rumble resumes in a few days. And now…
The Castlevania Songs Rumble
Semifinals, Fight 1
Castlevania: Curse of Darkness — Abandoned Castle (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmKUJZp4Kuc)
by Michiru Yamane (2005) for the Xbox and PlayStation 2
Fun Fact: This game is a sequel to Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse.
Previously beat: Garibaldi Courtyard, Requiem for the Gods, Marble Gallery
This may be the most rocking of our final four. It opens with a fanfare, and then a drum fill takes us into a quick, thrusting violin line over a hi-hat driven beat. That’s the backbone of the song, which it then builds off of, adding a deep-pitched guitar line, violins ala Bernard Hermann’s shower scene music in Psycho, and a theremin-esque synth line—all of which build tension until the bottom drops out at the 1:00 mark. The second half of the melody rises up, and then we shift into section two’s amalgamation of an organ dirge and heavy metal percussion. And that’s just the first two mintues! Before it’s over, we get a section in the style of Mega Man, a synth solo, and a smooth segue back into the opening themes at the loop. Michiru Yamane’s talents extend well beyond these styles, but this piece is commendable for and represents, in a small way, her genre-blending and strong melody writing.
vs.
Super Castlevania IV — Clockwork Mansion (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xQRMjAg2jN0)
by Souji Taro and Masanori Adachi (1991) for the SNES
Fun Fact: This soundtrack remixed several classic Castlevania pieces—including Vampire Killer, Bloody Tears, and Beginning from our rumble—and had its own victory fanfare and Theme of Simon Belmont (also from our rumble) remixed in several later games in the series.
Previously beat: Demon Seed, Jaws of a Scorched Earth, Abandoned Pit
Perhaps it’s appropriate that these two are facing off against one another, since they’re both multi-part pieces with ambitious mishmashes of styles. Here, we start off with an organ line (just a few of those in Castlevania), which changes mood as soon as the drums come in at :08. Alone, the organ seems mournful; with the drums, it transforms into something more driving and action-oriented. But then, like Abandoned Castle, the bottom drops out at :15, bringing us into a lull in the song. This is effective at doing a few things—keeping the song engaging and creating tension because, while the individual parts are conventional relative to their musical styles, they’re interacting with other parts of the music in unusual ways. The lull takes us into an organ fanfare, and then we get a synth melody over bongos and snare drums with a vaguely middle-eastern choice of notes, reminiscent of an oboe playing a snake-charming song. Then we finish with a trumpet, trailing off spookily as the main melody returns. This would be a cool piece to listen to while walking in a haunted house.

The Castlevania Songs Rumble
Semifinals, Fight 2
Castlevania — Vampire Killer (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYfgpodCVHE)
by Kinuyo Yamashita (1986) for the NES
Fun Fact: The game’s storyline and setting have been re-used in the series four times: in Vampire Killer on the MSX, Super Castlevania IV on the SNES, Castlevania Chronicles on the X68000 and PlayStation, and Haunted Castle in arcades.
Previously beat: Heart of Fire, Wood Carving Partita, Repose of Souls
Right out the gate, that stuttering bass line and bold melody make a statement about the quality of the first Castlevania game. But the concision and ease with which the song’s pieces fit together make it a little harder to appreciate its intricacy, too, because the song invites you to sit back and let it do its work as background music. In a lot of cases, songs from the NES era hang around because of nostalgia, and that’s certainly a force at play here. But I think the swagger in the melody writing, and the little call and response that happens with the faux-pizzicato sounds in the second part and the “strings” in the fourth section, and the fact that nothing repeats more than once in the whole loop—all make this piece still compelling to listen to. You get a lot for 30 seconds of music, which is yet another example of the composing talent working in video games back in the day.
vs.
Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse — Beginning (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGq9VjJXVh8)
by Yoshinori Sasaki, Jun Funahashi, Yukie Morimoto (1989) for the NES
Fun Fact: The Japanese version of the game had a specialized “VRC6” music microprocessor chip that added two extra pulse-wave channels and a saw-wave channel to help more closely replicate the sound of a synthesized string section. This chip was removed for the North American and European versions of the games.
Previously beat: The Silence of the Daylight, Within These Castle Walls, Dance of the Pales
To start on the same note that Vampire Killer ended on, this piece is also an intricate work, but that fact may be overwhelmed by the broad strokes and catchiness of the melody. Underneath that is a rocking, dynamic, start/stop bass line and some considerably more subtle percussion than what’s in, say, Abandoned Castle—but equally effective. One thing that’s particularly nice about this song is the way the third section, starting at :32, halves the tempo for a brief moment before we go back into the trills and embellishments and full-on momentum of the rest of the piece. So much happens in :50. It’d be a daunting task to give any composer that small an amount of time to establish a mood, but here we get a melody that is both delicate and harsh, a bass line that is both rocking and graceful, percussion that is precise but heavy—all contributing to a piece that overall is one of the series' best mixtures of baroque and rock.
Unfortunately, we have to choose. So my votes are for Abandoned Castle and Vampire Killer.

Beginning
This was hard. Obviously, vampire killer must be at least a portion of the reason behind the success of the first castlevania game. The dynamic changes in the melody of Vampire Killer that you almost never hear in NES music almost did it for me, but Beginning just seemed a little bit better, but why? The half-time feel at :32 is great in beginning. The beginning of both songs are VERY similar, and both songs are in the same key, so Beginning almost feels like an embellishment of Vampire Killer.
In the end, Beginning just has a better melody in my opinion, and for me that's it.
p.s. I checked out the JP version of beginning, and wow that sounds quite different! I really like the differences in some parts, but not so much in others. I think the half-time-feel sections sound really cool in this JP version.

Castlevania - Vampire Killer
Really tough choice here. They are both wonderful classics of equally high worth. I choose VK simply because of sentiment- I remember this theme from old times and was humming it countless times since then:) (I've played Castlevania III but only on emu, few years ago unfortunately ) btw Beginning eliminated my beloved Dance of the Pales, so I demand blood!! I would have to say Beginning only for the fact that it's a nice light tone of the things to come later in the game. Vampire Killer sounds like you are just a stage away from fighting Dracula himself.

I'll let this run a little longer than normal since it's the end of the fall semester and everybody's dealing with final deadlines for school.
In the meantime, here's one tidbit I found, which is too bizarre/scary/interesting not to share. This is from the website for Kinuyo Yamashita, who composed the soundtrack for Castlevania (which was her first musical work!):
On August 15th, 1998 Yamashita collapsed while playing tennis. She was taken to the hospital in an ambulance and diagnosed with a Subarachnoid hemorrhage. She stayed in the hospital for a week comatose, only to suffer from a second subarachnoid hemorrhage. Her chance of living severely decreased, however the second operation was a miraculous success. She spent another week in a coma and awoke with no memory and slight paralysis on the right side of her body. Gradually her memory and paralysis recovered and she was released from the hospital. She was able to continue her career in music afterwards.

And now, we're continuing the NES soundtracks rumble below. But you also need to put in a second vote for one or more of the rumble ideas. Deciding the Next Rumble Rumble
More details about each can be found here (

1) The Best of Nobuo Uematsu 16 soundtracks
2) The Best of the SNES 64 soundtracks
3) The Best of the Genesis 64 soundtracks
4) The Best of Mega Man 32 songs
5) None (we'd focus on the NES rumble and do 2 fights at a time instead of 1)
Im happy with whatever we do, so Im only going to vote for an NES soundtrack. And that's tough enough that I'm just going to reduce it to numbers. I like more songs off Wizards and Warriors than Super Mario Bros. 2, even though SMB2 is the better game and makes me more nostalgic.

Super Mario Brothers 2
My votes for what's next:
Best of Genesis
Best of Mega Man
So...I listen to most of each entire soundtrack before I vote on these, and I have to say, Wizards and Warriors is disappointing for me. They are like Michael Jackson tunes with no melody, just the cool underlying rhythms. I mean, cool underlying rhythms are great, but not at the expense of a good melody, and Wizards and Warriors just failed to deliver that melody after giving a cool bass line and/or background time and time again. I will say this, I enjoyed the backgrounds, but that's all they seemed to be.
Super Mario Brothers 2 on the other hand delivers great melodies (only like 4, but they're great) in my opinion, so it gets my vote.
(also, I was serious about Rad Racer for the Nobuo Uematsu list)

Wizards and Warriors definately had some interesting tracks, but still not really enough to compete with SMB2 in my mind.
As for the next rumble, my first choice is easily the Mega Man rumble. After that, I'd probably say the Uematsu rumble, but really I'd be happy with anything - I didn't vote for the Castlevania rumble IIRC, but like Arthur said it just got better as we went along. If it's VGM I'm already sold ;)

My proposition for what to do next:
1. We start Uematsu Rumble now -it is relatively short, so after we will be done with it, we can concentrate solely on NES rumble.
2. After NES rumble final result, we go with double rumble again Genesis (or Snes) + Mega Man.
3. After Mega Man we can repeat the composer 16 soundtrack rumble, with f.e. Yasunori Mitsuda or Hitohi Sakimoto?
4. Finally after that, we can repeat the proces - the remaining console rumble + 32 songs long rumble ( Suikoden this time maybe?) + 16 songs long rumble
Of course, it's just a proposition
btw The other question is, if Arthur will have nothing against the horror of doing two rumbles at time repeatedly from now on ;)

On that thought, the 32 rumble could be another of the theme rumbles like the Aquatic one we had previously. Plus with those suggestion threads floating around, it could make Arthur's life easier to pick the tracks.
But that said, there's plenty of game series just waiting to be covered ;)

Oh I have, and always do!
As it happens, I watched the first Gremlins movie this evening for the first time in years, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Anarchically funny with many a disturbing shift in tone. The scene where Mrs Deagle answers to the door to a what she assumes is a bunch of 'glue-sniffing' Christmas carolers is still one of my favs. It's hilarious, but truly horrifying as well when she shrieks fatalistically "THEY'VE COME FOR ME!!!".

Gremlins was also pretty scary for a kids movie. I remember when the guy in the school lab was stabbed to death by a syringe. But my favorite scene might be from the second one where Billy walks into the bathroom and the recorded voice says, Hey mister. Welcome to the mens room! :)
Well, its a blow-out for Mega Man 3 (8-0) and a come-from-behind win for Guardian Legend (5-3). Weve got one fight left in the first round of the NES soundtracks rumble. But lets finalize everything with Uematsu first. So Ill post the current soundtrack/song list and leave that up for two days. Check it out and see if there are any soundtracks you want on the list and any songs that you think would better represent the soundtrack than the ones below (which were chosen for their diversity as much as their quality). After two days, Ill finalize everything and well have the first fight of the Uematsu rumble at the same time as the last fight of Round 1 of the NES soundtracks rumble.
I should also make an additional note. Every song link for Anata o Yurusanai goes to the same full-soundtrack download page, which was provided by Szczepan. Since the soundtrack is rare and, consequently, unavailable on the usual places like YouTube, imeem, last.fm, or Groove Shark, this download will be the only source for the songs during the rumble. If this will be a problem for anyone, please let me know. For Lord of Vermilion, YouTube links will be used like usual, but jakob.nelson has also provided a full-soundtrack download link on the Uematsu page (

Main Theme should replace one of the VII songs. I'm not saying A Secret Sleeping in the Deep Sea isn't amazing, but you can tell Uematsu put like, no effort into it.
That or One Winged Angel.
And no Darkness of Eternity for IX makes me a sad panda.

I happen to love "A Secret Sleeping in the Deep Sea." What makes you think he put no work into it? Just because it has a thin texture doesn't make it thoughtless. Main theme is good, though. I can see some merit to adding that.
For FF8, I should have paid more attention this list in the rumble group, but I really don't think that "Maybe I'm a Lion" deserves to be in that list. I would love to see "Silence and Motion" or "Fisherman's Horizon", maybe even "Tell Me" on that list instead. I also happen to not enjoy "Eyes on Me" but I know that many enjoy that one, so I won't even suggest that one be touched.

I do actually like it, I just though It'd be more realistic to remove that than One Winged Angel, which I don't particularly care for. Main Theme is my favourite Uematsu song, and the fact that it's called "Main Theme" kind of indicates it probably should be there.
The VIII list isn't that great either. It'd be a bit much to ask for Compression of Time (My favourite) but Silence and Motion, The Castle, Balamb Garden etc would be better than Maybe I'm a Lion, Blue Fields, and Eye on Me. Especially Eyes on Me.

Also, for FF1 I think Overworld Theme, Temple of Chaos, and Victory are better tunes than Corneria Castle. I'm a bit biased for Final Fantasy 1 as it's still one of my favorites from the series, but I love the whole soundtrack. I realize we can't include the entire thing, but I think these few might be better choices. The other ones you have listed that I didn't mention I think should stay.

I don't have any problem with "A Secret Sleeping in the Deep Sea.", but any battle theme would be better before "Birth of A God" In my opinion.
EDIT: I also agree with Q-Tip Trepe about putting FFVII Main Theme, I love that Song =D
I agree about FF8 Instead of "Maybe I'm a Lion" (in the case if we replace it with a song that it's as equally fast), I would replace it with "The Landing"

I want The Castle so badly for VIII.
And The Darkness of Eternity >>>> Battle 2, as far as Battle themes go.

What about...
For FF1
- Temple of Chaos for Corneria Castle
For FF7
- Main Theme for A Secret Sleeping in the Deep Sea
(since including both and removing Cid's Theme or one of the others would give a pretty mellow impression of the soundtrack)
* The Birth of a God was a request from the group page. It replaced J-E-N-O-V-A. However, I'm happy to switch it out if we can get more than one vote to agree on a replacement that's in the same vein (i.e., a battle theme or fast-paced song).
For FF8
- Balamb Garden for Blue Fields
- Silence and Motion for Eyes on Me
- The Castle for Maybe I'm a Lion
* Here I'm okay with cutting Maybe I'm a Lion without putting in another battle theme because we already have The Extreme and Liberi Fatali.
For FF9
- The Darkness of Eternity for Iifa Tree
What do you think of these changes? Also, is the soundtrack selection okay? Uematsu's discography can be found here (

^I have nothing against those changes , but I am not sure if Crystal World should represent FFIX in this rumble. I like this track, but it's a remixed ver of music that can be found in every FF. I would love to see Terra or Bran Bal here instead ...

Bran Bal for Crystal World seems like a good switch to me.

Apologies for recycling information, but I needed to see the changes written out another way. So here's what we're looking at:
9. Final Fantasy VII — Main Theme, One-Winged Angel, Aerith’s Theme, Cid’s Theme, and A Better Battle Theme
10. Final Fantasy VIII — Liberi Fatali, Balamb Garden, The Extreme, Silence and Motion, The Castle
11. Final Fantasy IX — The Place I’ll Return to Someday, Battle 2, Crossing Those Hills, The Darkness of Eternity, Bran Bal
Are those fair representations of the soundtracks? If so, the biggest question left, then, is what battle theme to use from Final Fantasy 7. Any ideas?
Also, this probably doesn't need to be said but if anyone has had their favorite song removed from the list, that song still, of course, is part of the soundtrack and can influence voting. When you vote, you can always say, "I'm voting for FF VIII because of Residents," and provide a link.
