As we approach the end of the Follin rumble, I should point out that our options for future 16-64 track rumbles is dwindling and could use some additional input. The following options have at least been started, though some of them still require a great deal of work:

Best of Motoi Sakuraba (http://forums.ffshrine.org/groups/vgm-rumble-group-procrastination-station/best-motoi-sakuraba-153/)
Best of the N64 (http://forums.ffshrine.org/groups/vgm-rumble-group-procrastination-station/best-n64-154/)
Best of the C64 (http://forums.ffshrine.org/groups/vgm-rumble-group-procrastination-station/best-c64-210/)
Best of the Game Boy (http://forums.ffshrine.org/groups/vgm-rumble-group-procrastination-station/best-game-boy-209/)

As long as I keep making new rumble lists you're probably going to keep getting chippier stuff (Follin, C64, Game Boy), because that's the style of vgm I listen to most. Interested in something more modern/symphonic? Go start a new list!

Well, the rumble I've personally put the most time into developing is now coming to a close, and I couldn't be more content with the remaining contestants. I had Silver Surfer Level 1 as my ringtone for about four months last year (before switching it back to the Hiroki Kikuta song "Premonition", which has been my ringtone since about 1999 and still sounds as awesome as the first time I ever heard it). Silver Surfer was definitely one of the big five for me in this rumble--alongside the regrettably unappreciated Future Games and Chronos and the fairly successful Solstice. If I had to pick one to place above them all though, give me Ghouls'n Ghosts.

A tragic finale if I do say so myself. I believe the best track was the one eliminated in the last rumble. I'd take Plok's Arkillic all day over these two finalists.

Given the two I have, I suppose I'll side with Ghouls 'N' Ghosts.

Check out Beach (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ODKKILZiYY) and Flea Pit (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jHLOEAn5JTo) off Plok's soundtrack, too. They're equally strong tracks.

Well, I think these are two great choices for the final. I'm a huge fan of Silver Surfer's hyperkinetic, headbanging rock. Back when I was working on the NES rumble I started listening to all of the soundtracks I'd never heard before, and Silver Surfer was a total revelation. However, I think Ghouls n' Ghosts is the better composition. When those strings come in around the 2:30 mark, the song begins to float away beautifully. More than being a good song and technically impressive, as Silver Surfer is, it's captivating and also showcases some of the styles and compositional techniques that make Follin one of the greats.

In perhaps the most decisive final round so far, Tim Follin's title theme to the 1989 Amiga 500 port of Ghouls'n Ghosts (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KgCLAXQow3w) wins this rumble 7-0. Perhaps the penultimate match-up with Akrillic was the tougher test. Either way, I'm happy to see what's arguably my personal favorite Follin song go all the way. :)

Final Fantasy VII: Bombing Mission (5-1) advances with ease, as expected. Upon request, we'll do a double header in the Final Fantasy rumble while I work the final few kinks out of the Motoi Sakuraba rumble. But first, here are some overall statistics from round 1 that you might find interesting. Obviously a number of variables are going to prohibit these results from providing a perfect picture of our collective soundtrack preferences (I think the unusual amount of Final Fantasy IX double pairings in particular held that game back from rising far above or below 50%), but the turn-out is still pretty revealing. Actual gameplay experience was almost certainly a major factor in determining people's votes, with the lack of nostalgia potential for newer games bringing their numbers way down. The most successful soundtrack, moreover, won by such a huge margin that I have to question whether relative quality of other gameplay factors like plot and graphics has not subconsciously swayed our votes in previous rumbles.

Cheers. You, Topopoz, and Aces all sort of disappeared at the same time, so I just put things on hold for a while. I figured 16 soundtracks would be preferable since most of the rumbles lately have been individual tracks, but I'm definitely open for suggestions. I personally like the individual track ones better anyway. Since I'm not familiar with Sakuraba, I was just going to link full soundtracks on youtube where available. A hand-picked selection of 5 or so tracks from each would definitely make things easier, but that takes a lot of time to compile.

I just got home from work. I'll flip for the fight 3 tie and toss up the next FF battles later tonight.

I know I said a week for the Sakuraba rumble, but apparently there's something deep inside me that will prioritize creating rumbles over doing real work. I think it's called procrastination. Anyway, I posted (http://forums.ffshrine.org/groups/vgm-rumble-group-procrastination-station/best-motoi-sakuraba-153/) 17 soundtracks with song recommendations. One of the soundtracks will need to go, and I already cast my vote. A couple of the soundtracks have more than 5 songs so that I can revisit them tomorrow and make final cuts. Suggestions are welcome on the group page. I think fans of battle themes are really gonna dig Sakuraba (if you don't already). I did go with 16 soundtracks, as opposed to 32 songs, because organizing the FF rumble is already a beast, and I like the idea of a quick rumble paired with a long one.

Cool. :D Sakuraba's rumble starts off with one of his most-used songs: Mission to the Deep Space, which appears in Valkyrie Profile (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3A3wW40NPnM), Valkyrie Profile 3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NDAjL7csDp8), Star Ocean 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xmyJY42YeDo), Star Ocean: Till the End of Time (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Rc1_OhoCiE), and Radiata Stories (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lq5hAuEloPc). Choosing between the first two competitors is tough. Lenneth established an identity for the Valkyrie Profile games, creating tension and mood using short, circular arpeggiated chord progressions played on harp, celesta, and gamelan-like instruments. The percussive hits he added to some of these sounds almost made them sound like clocks. It's an interesting effort. Golden Sun had more limited technology to work with, but wrests a lot of emotive power from it. I never played the games, yet feel nostalgic toward the music, particularly Aqua Rock, the first from our selections. Many moments from it feel like a nod to the classic Final Fantasy soundtracks. I'm torn between the soundtrack that I think has the stronger songs (Golden Sun) and the soundtrack I think is more nuanced (Valkyrie Profile). I guess I'll thrown in with Golden Sun.

As for the other fight, it's a dead tie for me, so I'll give it to the song that's endured far more listens without getting old: Fight 2.

Arthur, I uh, was going off the Motoi Sakuraba group thread for my track links in that rumble. Is there any way you can restore it, or do you happen to have a copy of the links you posted that you can PM me? I'll see about getting a mod to restore it if you don't, so please don't waste time recreating it from scratch. For now:

Tales of Destiny - With a good bit of FFVII's sound in Despair. Its competitor, El Viento, is sometimes touted as one of the Genesis' best soundtracks. I think it's solid and interesting as a early indication of Sakuraba's compositional style. But ultimately not as successful as Tales of Destiny.

Shining Force III - Love "The Holy Land of Elbesem." Baten Kaitos has some stand-out tracks, but most of them tend to be mellow. There's a higher bar of quality and more variety on Shining Force III in my opinion. Plus you can see him trying out arrangement ideas for Valkyrie Profile.

Kuja's Theme is a simple and effective piece. But I gotta go with Ancient Castle. That's a nifty little melody, symphonic by implication, that draws up a mood and setting even without the benefit of real instruments or acoustics.

Heads wins, Star Ocean: The Second Story (3-3) and Final Fantasy V: Clash on the Big Bridge (5-2) advance. Because this is a short rumble and I think the outcome of that match-up will be pretty significant down the road, anyone who didn't vote that fight and cares to break the tie one way or the other now is welcome to.

In deciding the greatest Sakuraba soundtrack, I think the easier case to make is for Star Ocean. Sakuraba's name is powerfully associated with that franchise. The soundtrack bears signature elements of his compositional style. And this game in particular was probably where a lot of gamers were introduced to his music. But more so I vote for Star Ocean: The Second Story because I think it's the superior work, song for song. Dark Souls is very solid, very atmospheric, and compelling. But there isn't the level of variety as in Star Ocean (which, granted, has to do with the genre of the game more than the efforts of the composer). Plus it'd be the champion of a Sakuraba rumble despite being the black sheep of his discography. Worthy of the title, yes. But a winner with a footnote that it didn't really sound like him.

I am a HUGE fan of Blue Fields, especially the orchestrated (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MrmjSR_hgLs) version. But I've heard a lot of people say that can't listen to it because of how often they heard it in-game. :-\ That's a shame, because I just can't get enough of it out of game.

Best of the Nintendo 64 (soundtracks)
Best of the Commodore 64 (songs)
Best of the Game Boy (songs)

Pick as many or as few as you like, or suggest something new. Just because you suggest something doesn't necessarily mean you'll have to go through the work of making it yourself. Just throw some ideas out there. I like song rumbles more than soundtrack ones, so Game Boy and C64 get my vote.

Note that Best of Zelda will follow automatically after the Final Fantasy rumble. I am thinking of making Best of WoW another long-term 128 project to follow Zelda. At any rate, it is too far from complete to consider as our next rumble.

Final Fantasy XI: Anxiety (4-1) pulls off an, I think, quite surprising win over Golden Saucer. Game Boy got the most support for our next rumble, and that means I need your help. The 32-track Game Boy list still needs seven more songs. There is a decent possibility that some of your favorites are missing, as I made the list based on my own personal preference rather than popularity.

As much as I love Song from her Memory, I feel The Extreme is a better piece and really fits the atmosphere.

still don't understand why JENOVA get's so many arrangements everywhere...

No love for The Birth of a God? You could take that theme, with some good instrumentation and adding a few arrangements with probably a keyboard solo and you've got yourself a kick ass song.

Anyway, still alive here. Still without Internet. And my vote goes for Aerith's Theme.
