Hello!

Even though sonic was obviously a major hit back in the day, I can only remember actually playing it once on the actual console, but it was a hire from a video store. So sonic doesn't have the kind of memories for me that most who have played it would have. You see, I didn't get my first video game console until i was 9, and that was a sega master system with alex the kidd built in, which was actually just included when we bought a new tv at the time.

All that to say, i guess it puts me in an objective view to rate the sonic tracks!

I like the sonic 2 track. particularly like that it has the same sound in it that is used for the ring collection.

Sonic 3d is definitely nice sounding techno track. I like that I can listen to it peacefully. the 3 minutes went really quickly cause it was nice to the ears.

To be honest both are good tracks but I'm going for the Sonic 3d.

I haven't played the donkey kong games either.

I have to say that the Donkey Kong Country soundtrack really pushed it over at the beginning ("Theme")

I like the Donkey Kong Country better than 2.

Hi friends. This has been the longest break in the rumble's 8-year history. I apologize. A combination of family, health, and work factors all came up at the same time. But we're back.

The Jeremy Soule rumble got the most votes, so I've begun working on that here (http://forums.ffshrine.org/group.php?gmid=6510&do=discuss#gmessage6510). I humbly ask for your help in making decisions toward the final list. Even if you have only heard one Jeremy Soule song in your life, but you liked it and you want to make sure it ends up in the rumble, that would be a help.

Note 1: For the Soule rumble, we need 16 soundtracks. We have 14 that are generally agreed upon. We have 8 others vying for the last 2 spots. So we're going to do a qualifying rumble to determine those last 2.

Note 2: The links for Azurik are designed to jump to specific spots in the YouTube video. If you're using a mobile device this may not work, in which case you should use the links in the video's description to jump to the appropriate places.

In general Soule soundtracks tend to stick with you as a consequence of hearing them playing as the ambient background for hours on end. On first listen they're really hard to distinguish sometimes. I don't have much of an opinion on these two the first time through. Might give them another go later. For now Neverwinter Nights because City Docks stood out to me the most of the 10 tracks.

Neverwinter Nights

@arthurgolden: I wasn't referring to the quality of his music, he is pretty clearly a very talented composer. It's just that most of his soundtracks are so similar that it's extremely difficult for me to pick favorites in this rumble. I've played both of the games above for probably more than 100 hours and I still have a hard time remembering where exactly those tracks were played in the game. It's all very well-crafted stuff, but it also feels pretty interchangeable at times.

Icewind Dale

When I suggested doing this rumble I did consider at the time how similar a lot of his music is... but I'm still really happy that this was chosen as it's already helped introduce me to some of his other stuff and it's been quite cool to hear his earlier music and recognise parts of it. For Icewind Dale and Neverwinter Nights they both sound very familiar, although I think he improved on them with the Elder Scrolls and Guild Wars soundtracks.

Results from the previous round: Marble Zone (5-3) and Temple (7-1) advance!

Note: As we start the Soule rumble, there are a couple questions I'm intrigued to see the answers to. In the pre-rumble, several wondered if Soule's individual tracks were distinct enough to judge against one another. The volume of his output is eye-opening. For instance, in 2002, Soule composed soundtracks for 8 separate games. He did the same in 2006. That's 6 weeks per soundtrack. Averaging about 30 tracks per soundtrack in 2002, he wrote a new song about every 1.5 days. Do we simply like Soule's musical style, or are there specific tracks that stand out? Also of note, this rumble will take us back to the question of how we feel about arrangements, which we've tackled before. John Williams is a ghostly presence in some of these match-ups. Do we view arrangements as less impressive--and therefore less worthy of a vote--than an original composition?

I think you make a good point about the amount of projects he worked on in such a short amount of time, the fact that a lot of them are all quite similar games too probably doesn't help! That track creation stat is just crazy.

For me it's less about individual tracks, more how easy his music is to listen to, like I'd have a hard time placing which music fits certain areas in games or I guess even which music fits certain games. That said there are still plenty of standout tracks, just perhaps a bit harder to pick out. It's been a shame to see he hasn't composed as much recently.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

I never realized how prolific Soule is. I can't can't imagine producing the much music in such a short time frame. I suppose that's why his music is so similar sounding, which I never realized quite how similar until this rumble. It is difficult for me to choose between his soundtracks sometimes because of the similarities, sometimes I choose which one is more unique, sometimes which one I enjoy listening to more.

and it's tough since i think they're both weak, but

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

KOTOR was a real opportunity to go all out on thematic development - i mean, its star wars - but this seems to be the period of time as pointed out by arthurgolden when soule started to phone it in, either due to quantity of output or leaning more on his brother's contributions, or both. he's certainly capable of writing distinct material when he invests himself, though. i think all his output up to morrowind sounds like it got 110% and is really distinct, and most things from Guild Wars: Eye of the North after as well. icewind dale has 10 fully developed themes and motifs running throughout for example, and Dragon Battle (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gcWGIkIHLFg) from Heart of Winter is one of my favorite action pieces from him. it really does vary from project to project for him. skyrim has an undeniable identity of its own, but guild wars is really more defined by just being an orchestral pastiche without any real distinct orchestration or thematic development.

i wonder how much of his phoned-in material during this time (like the laughable unreal 2 contributions) were delegated to his brother, ala the DOTA 2 The International 2015 music pack credited to "Jeremy & Julian Soule" that jeremy let slip on twitter he didn't write any music for.

Results from the previous round: Marble Zone (6-3) and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (6-3) advance!

Note 1: Marble Zone becomes our newest winner! And with that, Sonic the Hedgehog 1 continues its streak of winning every rumble it has ever been a part of: the first un-themed rumble, the Genesis soundtracks rumble, and now Sonic songs.

Note 2: I've included options for the next rumble below. As has been the case for the last few decisions, none of these options are finished, so it may take some time and/or a collective effort to get them ready to go. Best of 1997, Fire Levels, Ys series, and Underappreciated soundtracks have not been started yet, though I think I could put them together quickly. Please vote for as many rumble ideas as you'd be interested in.

Lots of good stuff happening on the 90s End Credits group page (http://forums.ffshrine.org/group.php?discussionid=492&do=discuss). Hopefully, that'll be ready to go soon. For now, a double bill of Soule.

Also, I looked up the Jeremy/Julian DOTA 2 scandal, since I hadn't heard of that before. I wasn't able to find Jeremy's posts in question, but I did see this follow-up (https://www.reddit.com/r/DotA2/comments/3bxn2r/psa_jeremy_soule_did_not_participate_in_the/) on Reddit making the case for Jeremy's participation. Take the info with a grain of salt since no evidence is provided.

My Picks:

Secret of Evermore - The older rumblers may remember my ramblings about the story behind this soundtrack (Thread 66118). This is also the soundtrack that brought me to Galbadia Hotel. In 2006, I was living far away from home in the wake of a natural disaster and was pretty deep into a nostalgia coping phase. Many of the soundtracks to my favorite games from childhood and adolescence were easy to find, but Secret of Evermore was out of print and all but nonexistent on the searchable internet. Galbadia Hotel was the only place I could find it, which opened the door to so many other soundtracks hosted there, which led me here. 10 years later, I'm still in the same place banging the drum for my childhood favorites.

@fowftw: I didn't realize until you mentioned it that no Guild Wars soundtracks had won yet. Strange, since they were all strong contenders.

@PforPianist: The crazy thing is that blow-outs used to happen frequently. There's actually still a policy in the OP about moving to the next fights if the posted ones have two uncontested winners. On the one hand, the lack of blow-outs is a good sign that we've had worthy contenders even in the early rounds of each rumble. On the other hand, it seems strange to think it's probably been years since any fight produced total consensus.

The song is really much like the other soundtracks before it turned into a chaotic mess. It feels like they could milk that style for ages. That's why i want to vote for sonic 3d in this. Unfortunately the other song it's harder for me to vote for having never played any turtles games. I never played sonic 3d, but man sonic puts you into a good mood.

Explosive Breaker - Now we're talking! Two pretty good tracks. One thing I like about Explosive Breaker is the endearing fact that they put a PSG chip in an arcade machine from 1992. It also sounds a little bit like the attempt to cover a Bach gavotte by a '90s pop act.

I actually recently bought a cart with secret of evermore on it (not intentional... though it was cool to see it after learning it was done by jeremy soule) having never played it. Awesome. looking forward to play soon. I need the retrode to play it. It's my first cart also :) (unless you call rentals "my first cart")

Though it's obvious he's more accomplished in oblivion, the secret of evermore really has a soundtrack that is exceptionally likeable. Like the kind of music nobuo was able to do for final fantasy at the time.
For that reason i'm going for Secret of Evermore (Yeah i totally did just vote for the 90s tracks haha)

This was my same thoughts. I felt Oblivion was more refined, perhaps due to technology as well as experience, but I found Secret of Evermore to be more enjoyable.

I'm very happy Secret of Evermore and zOMG! made it as far as they did. I have tons of affection for both, and against all other competition I'd choose the SNES soundtrack that brought me here. But this is going to be a vote for Skyrim. This soundtrack shows off Soule's delicate touch, his talent for creating atmosphere, his signature compositional gestures, and the romanticism of his more recent work--all while giving us something both beautiful and exciting. Ancient Stones and The Jerall Mountains are great examples of this. But even at his sleepiest, when his melodies hang in stasis, Soule has a rare talent for making compelling music. Streets of Whiterun is like an image of laundry drying on the line in a Terrence Malick film. There's something being whispered that seems important. The City Gates, maybe even more so, feels in tune with arthouse films of the '70s, like an experiment in making Aguirre, the Wrath of God (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zdeIN3sYcfk) more hopeful.

I'm going to veto the failure themes precisely because of the ?: I had a very specific idea in mind for that that I didn't articulate well, and a lot of the tracks that were recommended just don't belong there. I need to clean it up and do more work on it than will happen soon.

Gotcha. That helps because it certainly falls outside my video gaming comfort zone, too. This summer, my friend's cousin left for Japan and entrusted him with a Wii U. Well, my friend's wife said she didn't want yet another video game system in the house, so he brought it to my place for safekeeping. Neither of us play modern games normally, but the hype for Breath of the Wild was off the charts, so we split the cost. I was absolutely blown away. I'd never played an open-world game before. If I like Skyrim, too, I might be hooked.

I've never played Skyrim, and I think I'd enjoy it, but I get too much motion sickness from videogames, especially the more modern ones.

Interesting you say that. I had a huge learning curve controlling the camera in Breath of the Wild. I was flinging it all over the place trying to see stuff and constantly made myself dizzy. It probably took 10 hours of gameplay before my instincts settled and/or my eyes adjusted to playing within a 3D environment.

If there is any interest, I could try to make a custom 16 rumble with a tbd theme to run alongside the current one.

Please do. When Shad first came up with the concept, the hope was that everyone would create their own and post it on the group thread (http://forums.ffshrine.org/group.php?discussionid=486&do=discuss). Final Fantasy 4

I could go for either but the fire levels took my fancy.

I could never really get into the ending themes of FF4 or FF6. Too much reprise of already familiar tracks without bringing enough variance to the table to feel fresh, for me.

They always reminded me a bit of the ending themes that most of the old Sierra adventures had: long medleys of various themes from the game.

Brutal first round pair for the 90s tunes. I'll take

Star Ocean: The Second Story

Musha Aleste

Star Ocean: The Second Story - This is an old favorite of mine. I put this on a mix CD of vgm for a friend back in 2008. Love the section beginning at 2:20. I've also always loved that bendy, synthesized bass sound. Can anybody identify what that is? I hear it everywhere.

Musha Aleste - Right from the get-go, these two selections provide interesting answers as to how composers summon the idea of fire. With Musha Aleste, we get a tantivy to suggest chaos and action. Super Mario Galaxy 2, on the other hand, gives us this predominantly New Romantic dance of tubular bells, trumpets, strings, and timpani (with a synth sound approximating an Egyptian lute) that bursts into a heroic theme about a minute in, suggesting high adventure.
