Hi all. I hate putting a time limit on the tie-breaker, but I won’t be on the Shrine again this weekend. So I think it’d be better to do a coin flip and get the next fight started, rather than letting this sit for several more days. And the coin flip goes to…Gran Turismo (4-3). The other winner is Treasures of the Deep (6-0). Next up, the final fight of Round 1…

Not quite. Check the composer list for Bayonetta first. Hell, if we look hard enough I'm sure we'll find a game with more composers than either of these two, but I can tell you that Klonoa's 9 pale in comparison to Bayonetta's 11.

My votes are for Einhander and Medievil.
These are two interesting fights because they each represent tendencies of video game composers in the post-16-bit world. If you remember, the SNES had difficulty (
http://forums.ffshrine.org/f63/official-video-game-music-rumble-66118/30.html#post1490785) creating rock music faithfully because of its compression method. There were workarounds and there were exceptions, but for the most part SNES music was faux-orchestral and Genesis music was rock- and techno-influenced.
That changed with the next generation of consoles when composers working with the PlayStation were freed from many of the technical limitations of the past. Thus, you have a plethora of rock- and techno-influenced soundtracks like our first two competitors, in numbers equivalent to orchestral soundtracks such as Medievil and, to a lesser extent, Soul Edge.
In this way, the world of video game music was opening up for PlayStation gamers, far beyond these two oversimplified categories as well, making the fifth generation one of the most important for the evolution of vgm.

I didn't miss a particularly exciting battle it seems, since I would have voted for both of the winners anyway. Also wow, Super Metroid would have sounded awesome on Genesis.
Never let it be said that Einhander is in any way a bad soundtrack, however, because that is a lie. Personally, my vote is slightly biased due to my experience with Tekken 3 as a kid. That applies to MediEvil as well, but I didn't like Soul Edge much.
Edit: Browsing through some of the older pages of this rumble, I feel like we should try to get more voters. We get 5-6 people voting now, while a few months ago we had nearly double that. Of course, you can't expect most people to stick around forever but that doesn't mean we can't get new people to participate.

Of course, you can't expect most people to stick around forever but that doesn't mean we can't get new people to participate.
I'm always happy to have more participating. Our philosophy is definitely "the more, the merrier." If you all mention the rumble to your friends or put a link in your signature, that could help bring in new people.
I also have several ideas that you all could help with. For instance, I've been thinking about uploading the songs from each rumble in separate threads in the Downloads forum. That way, people can download the music and also be encouraged to come check us out. I just don't have the time to create those threads right now. But if anyone is interested, let me know and I can send you some stuff.
I've also done a lot of advertising in other threads and through PMs. Obviously, you don't want to annoy others, especially over a thread that many people have seen by now. But I've stayed active in encouraging people to participate.
However, I think the best thing to do is to just keep going, making things fun and interesting. If that holds true, people will talk about the thread. If others hear about it, they'll take a look.

Don't get me wrong I have in very High Regard Xenogears, as the soundtrack that opened the doors of Mitsuda to define the sound of music he does from that point to these days.
But I just love MMX5 music and game that much.

A surprisingly large margin of victory for Suikoden (6-0) against the popular Wild Arms 2 soundtrack, and a surprisingly small margin of victory for Xenogears (3-2), which was discussed last round as a good bet to win the entire rumble. Interesting. Next up...

My votes are for Resident Evil and Silent Hill. Surprised myself with both of these votes after re-listening to the soundtracks. All four are impressive, but these are especially impressive for their historical importance. Even though they're mostly composed of atmospheric music, they contributed immensely to making both series memorable and successful.

Vagrant Story - I'll admit what you've said about Resident Evil and I agree partially, I still prefer the music of 2 & 3 over 1.
But to me it doesn't reach to the toes of the quality of Composition of this Soundtrack.
Beyond my obvious weakness for Sakimoto's Music, Vagrant Story is the one most Heterogeneous Soundtracks outhere, It brought a wide variety of sounds and moods in the history of all VGM. Plus the Blending of the music with the Imagery of the game makes me weep.
From an artistical standpoint Vagrant Story wins for me, because it's the Magnum Opus that's been overlooked for being too unusual for the regular consumer.
Without going further with this I'll give some more links with amazing tracks of this amazing piece of art.

Silent Hill - Agreed on this one as well, even though the rest SH music was more trip hop influenced. The Industrial and chaotic sound of this one nails it and remains as my fauvorite SH soundtrack for being the most twisted of the whole series. =D

I find it funny that both of the games in the 2nd bracket are my least favorites in series I otherwise enjoy. While I am well aware that the entire SH series started with 1 and my beloved Silent Hills 2 and 3 wouldn't exist without it, I still find the original rather weak and I while I don't say the same for the soundtrack, I don't enjoy it as much as later installments, which is why I decided to vote FFIX over it. Now let it be said that I despise that one as game, but it's arguably Uematsu's best score.

I disagree regarding FFIX... Even though I'll admit it has some superb tracks... Many many of them are weak and repetitive to the point of being annoying, just like the game itself of course. =D
SH1 is not a weak game by all means. Look at the year it was released and it's much better than 4 or the rest. It is my fauvorite SH game of course, I won't deny what's so good on SH2. But SH1 has some charm to me and does not have many facepalm moments like those found on 3, 4 or the rest of the series. Origins is one of the worst pieces of Garbage ever along with Homecoming, which is a wannabe SH2.

My votes are for Legend of Mana and Final Fantasy VII. The first one is tough. GT and LofM couldn't be going for more dissimilar moods. One is fast-paced and upbeat; the other is soporific and heavy. Both are well done. Both make good use of synths. Both are varied. Both come from popular games. And both stick to their genre conventions pretty closely. For me, it came down to the fact that I listen to Legend of Mana a little more often.
The second fight is easy except for the fact that I really like Klonoa and, with a lesser opponent, might have made it another round or so.

EDIT: ^^ I completely forgot about Brawl! That's gotta be the winner, as far as I know. Good call.
I'm gonna let this run another day. I know some people have been busy this whole week.
Completely off-topic: I just finished watching both seasons of Twin Peaks on Netflix streaming, and I am totally obsessed with it. If you haven't seen the show, I highly recommend checking out the first season. It's dramatic and full of twists, like a soap opera. But it's also subtle, tense, devoted to character development, and--best of all--hilarious. It's so funny I was clapping like an idiot and falling out of my chair. I now realize how many times people around me have quoted it without me knowing. You'll also see its influence on tons of other shows once you've watched it. And it doesn't hurt that nearly every woman on it is smokin' hot.
Closer to the topic: It's got good music, too, which is posted all around the Downloads forum (example 1 (

My votes are for Valkyrie Profile and Final Fantasy VIII. I couldn't figure out how to vote on the first one for awhile. VP and Medievil are both great. And I was tempted to vote for Medievil because it was a career piece for Barnabas (who now, sadly, does music for stuff like Animal Cops: Miami and My Brother Is a Dog). But VP is what I listen to more often between the two. The second one was easy because FFVIII is my second favorite Final Fantasy soundtrack after VI.

My votes are for Metal Gear Solid and Suikoden. MGS put an entire franchise on its shoulders, and the music was a big part of that. I just played MGS this past year and was so enthralled that I devoured every other part of the series. Within about two months, I watched playthroughs of every Metal Gear game and read everything I could about the story and composers. Consequently, the music, while often simple, has a big hold on me. As for Suikoden, I just beat it two days ago for probably the fifth time since 1996 when I first got it. The game and the music still have the same charm and beauty. I hate voting against Vagrant Story and Final Fantasy Tactics, but these games and their soundtracks truly represent the best of the PlayStation for me.
P.S. Welcome to Zetara22.

This is the most difficult battle that I could ever imagine... I think this another one of those that will boil down to what I listen more often...
While I agree that MGS put the Franchise on his shoulders, I kindly disagree regarding that the music did that. Now I love the music of the 1st MGS, it's the best one in the series in my opinion. But I don't listen much of that influence later on the series. Norihiko Hibino changed too much the style of music in the rest of the Series IMO. Give or Take every MGS games is themed on an specific subject. I don't think that Gregson Williams or Hibino Captured the correct impresion for the rest of the music in the series, at least not with the same accuracy that did Tappy Iwase and the rest of the team at the Konami Kuheiha Club. Just my point of view, I've played every MGS game several times, except for MGS4 and the Portable ones.
But even having said that, I've still haven't decided what I'll vote on that battle... Both games and soundtracks are equally important to me.
EDIT: I'll provide my votes later after some depth and profound analysis...

As a huge Sakimoto fan, a fan of MGS and with complete inexperience with Suikoden I can vote for the following without feeling too guilty:
Vagrant Story
Final Fantasy Tactics
Let me explain. Metal Gear Solid was and still is a phenomenal game. It was one of the first games to get stealth right, it had a complex and thought provoking story but not without heart and emotion. Vagrant is simply not as impressive. It had interesting combat, great story and atmosphere and I still think it's a great game just not on the level of Metal Gear Solid. But we're not voting for the games here, are we? The music was fitting and rather good but I personally wouldn't rate it as highly as other games in the series, especially 2, which was superior in my opinion, with great tracks in several different genres, using several different instruments. Vagrant Story on the other hand is varied, intense and one Sakimoto's best works. A perfect soundtrack for a great game. There's really nothing more to be said.
On the other battle there isn't as much to be said. I haven't played any Suikoden game and while I do think the music is great, it didn't make as much of an impact to me personally as FFT's music, which is why I'm voting for the latter.

After some analysis, I've reached to the conclusion that I can't vote against any of those soundtracks with valid reasons at all. My love for the music of those games is indescribable.
So My votes are Vagrant Story. It's the Magnum Opus of probably my fauvorite VGM Composer, The game represents as the best entry on the Ivalice games taking risks of a lot of things in it's development and execution, and it's overlooked by many people. Love it or Hate it, Vagrant Story from an artistical standpoint it's one of the most ambitious titles out there, and it is the most ambitious title released that year, as it is the music in my opinion, this was in the days that Square led some freedom to it's developers to make their own stuff, without paying attention to marketing strategies, Vagrant Story was almost an intentional Cult title. Triggers a lot of amazing memories, just as Metal Gear did for me when a was a boy, playing the Demo, mesmerized by the Voice Acting, Gameplay, Music and Storyline. Vagrant Story did the same for me, Mesmerizing me for it's artistical crafting and execution of every element, not just the music. And I could give an analyisis of every scene with the track sounding. And listen to the track only and be amazed by the creative effort putted on this Soundtrack.
The other goes for Suikoden and I vote this one instead of FFT because of the reason you Arthur voted MGS. It's the title that put the franchise on shoulders.
This rumble is fucking amazing, provoking me moral breakdowns xD. And I'm still sad about the 1st battle.

We've got a tie between Suikoden and Final Fantasy Tactics. Anyone want to break it?
While I agree that MGS put the Franchise on his shoulders, I kindly disagree regarding that the music did that. Now I love the music of the 1st MGS, it's the best one in the series in my opinion. But I don't listen much of that influence later on the series.
Interesting point. I agree with you now that you've got me thinking about it. However, I would say that if "The Best Is Yet to Come" wasn't on the soundtrack, the game never would have had the necessary emotional payoff to make gamers froth at the mouth for the second MGS. The silly, wishy-washy, overly explanatory, almost unforgivable conversation between Meryl and Snake is so cheesy that without a truly great song to close things out, the last impression people would have had of the game would have been the involuntary desire to throw it across the room. Instead, MGS has, in my mind, one of the greatest endings in all of video games because of what happens after Snake and Meryl's final conversation. The combination of images and song, delivering the game's message in a much simpler, more powerful, and indirect way, hit me like a gut-punch.
The music was fitting and rather good but I personally wouldn't rate it as highly as other games in the series, especially 2, which was superior in my opinion, with great tracks in several different genres, using several different instruments.
No argument there. When we did the Metal Gear rumble way back, MGS2 gave all of the other games a run for their money with its Main Theme, Electronic Emma, Fortune, and Can't Say Goodbye to Yesterday.
Can I just wait until a hypothetical tiebreaker and vote then??
Haha. Well, one has come--just on a different fight. Someone who hasn't voted yet hopefully will resolve that.

The Best Is Yet to Come is IMO the real Main Theme of Metal Gear Solid. It captures every nature of every character and every detail in the storyline. I've never seen a Vocal Track so well used in any game in my life. That's for real.

@Smarty: I'm sending you a PM. I'd also like to stay in touch in case the forum goes down permanently. I'd be happy to keep in touch with all of you. If you want, shoot me a PM.
Regarding the tie: rather than flip a coin with so much at stake, I'm going to borrow a trick Agent0042 does in these situations. To determine the winner, he sees which soundtrack had the bigger percentage of votes in all of its previous rounds.
This is what those numbers look like:
Suikoden
Round 1 --- 5-1
Round 2 --- 6-0
Round 3 --- 4-3
Round 4 --- 3-3
That means that Suikoden got 18 out of a total of 25 votes--72%.
FF Tactics
Round 1 --- 6-0
Round 2 --- 5-0
Round 3 --- 5-0
Round 4 --- 3-3
That means that FFT got 19 out of a total of 22 votes--86%. You'll notice it has also blown out its competitors in every round but this one.
Consequently, Final Fantasy Tactics is the winner by tie-breaker. It'll join Vagrant Story (4-1) in the next round.
Next fights to be posted in a little while.

My votes are for Final Fantasy VIII and Final Fantasy VII. Brutal fight to start. You have two soundtracks that arent just good, but two soundtracks that stand as some of the peak achievements for these two composers. And these two composers are Mitsuda and Uematsutwo of the greatest vgm composers ever. So, how the hell do you decide one or the other? For me, it came down to two lists, quantifying how many truly excellent songs came from each soundtrack. That meant, for me, it was Times Scar, Times Grasslands, Ghosts Island, Garden of the Gods, and Star-Stealing Girl (5) versus Liberi Fatali, Balamb Garden, Breezy, Blue Fields, Maybe Im a Lion, and The Spy (6), giving FFVIII the slight edge. But thats just how I feel right now. I could see numerous counterarguments for Chrono Cross, and on another day I might have voted for it. Tough fight. The second one...not so much. Valkyrie Profile is good, but FFVII is legendary.

Final Fantasy VIII because guess which one I didn't give up on halfway through :D FF8's feel more contextual/moody to me, whereas Cross just sounds melodic and nothing else. Probably because I felt absolutely nothing for Cross.
Final Fantasy VII, I've actually beaten that one too, and some of the tracks on the OST are very well done (except One Winged Angel).

I gotta go with Chrono Cross. I do not consider FFVIII as the peak of Uematsu's Career. Although I'll admit VIII has one of the greatest music. Some songs haven't worked well for the game IMO, such as Rivals and some others. What really helped the music of VIII to be great was the Roland Synth he used and the sound itself, compared to VII the quality of sound it's a lot different.
Chrono Cross on the other hand it is and it always be IMO the best work of Yasunori Mitusda and it's very easy to fall and to appreciate the music of this game. The instrument selection is superb and the quality of melodies and harmonies are captivating, all in all. Amazing
The other goes for Final Fantasy VII, because Valkyrie Profile, has some Sakuraba type of tracks that I don't like. And of course because I love the music of VII.

Semifinals, Fight 1

Vagrant Story by Hitoshi Sakimoto (2000)
Opening Movie (

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vVooykY0CcI), Great Cathedral (

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tMcSr4PyutQ)
-----> Full soundtrack (
http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLC7FA53EBA99B515E)
Here is Sakimoto forcefully staking his claim as a major composer unto himself, without Iwata's help. It's a smooth transition from Tactics in terms of mood and instrumentation. But the compositions have several qualities to intensify what Sakimoto had previously accomplished. The density of the strings, chimes, brass, and woodwinds working together, coupled with the slow and sometimes subtle development of the melodies, gives the soundtrack a muddy, sleepy feel that was not common in video game music. Equally surprising are the moments when the music gearshifts suddenly into industrial breakbeats, echoing rim shots, and Twilight Zone-inspired synth lines, only to drop out into gorgeous plucked arpeggios or a wash of violins resolving the music's aggression. This soundtrack is forceful, dark, often militaristic, but also quite beautiful. Maybe because of that, Sakimoto is still intriguing. After all these years, theres an air of mystique and experimentation that still seeps into every soundtrack he contributes to, be it a surprising harp glissando in the middle of an electronic piece, a Vangelis bass line in the middle of a flute solo, or a mournful trumpet rising out of a battle theme. He has the skills to make complex music accessible to a wide audience, and does so here maybe better than on any other soundtrack he composed.

You blow up the reactor, defend yourself against the president, escape the Turks with Aeris, become a prostitute, watch as an entire area of your city is destroyed, climb out of the ruins, sneak into Shinra HQ, find everyone dead, fight your way out, finally leave Midgar, and get to the open-exploration part of the game where youre usually rewarded with a big, boisterous main theme. And what do you get? A lethargic, almost dirge-like, sweep of strings. If you raced, youve only only taken two hours to get to this point. But more likely its been three or four, and the tone is set for the rest of the game: darkness and futility. Consider the main themes of Final Fantasy I (

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7RPY-oiDAQ) and you can see the difference. Even in the slower themes before this game, there was a steady and prominent bass keeping things moving. In contrast, the hopefulness in VIIs music (like when it takes a romantic turn around the :52 mark) is still couched in sadness. As youre walking across the dark, often barren, industrial landscape, its hard to feel optimistic about your mission, visiting towns (Costa Del Sol and the Gold Saucer aside) with themes equally slow, sleepy, and/or melancholy. However, it's easy to be enthralled by what may be Uematsus most consistent soundtrack, maintaining its mood and instrumentation for the entire game. And because of that, as the game designer's intended, there is an overriding feeling of light emerging from vast darkness.

How hard is it to believe that this soundtrack is just one console removed from the SNES and Genesis? From the opening track, you can hear the difference in every aspect of the music: in the quality of the synths, the range and flexibility of the instruments, the concert-hall echo on the piano, and the very manner in which the melody is developed. Gone are the emphases on melodic immediacy and the limitations of sub-minute loops from the previous generation. This is Sakimoto and Iwata bringing video game music into high art with jabbing strings, snare rolls, electronic drums, trumpets blaring and trashcan lids shattering, some pieces rocking enough to shake the blood loose from your ears. Then there are moments of austere beauty like the relaxed, pokey trumpet melody in Attack Team or the pizzicato/harp-driven Heros Theme or the plodding Algus or the slippery bowing of Warriors Hideout. It's what we've come to expect from Sakimoto and Iwata, with all the hallmarks of their earlier output, exemplified particularly well on Ogre Battle's soundtrack. Except here it's done with a gentler touch, an eye towards subtlety. I tend to like the soporific, string-heavy tracks, but theres a diverse selection, from the rousting marches to the placid church hymns, that lend a sense of grandeur to the affair and make this one of the great soundtracks of the PlayStation era.

Its hard not to hear this soundtrack as a reaction to VII and, in fact, the designers of VIII have said that the game from top to bottom was meant to be brighter and fresher than its predecessor. There are connections between the twoLiberi Fatali as One-Winged Angel 2.0, Roses and Wine as Aeriths Theme 2.0, the fight songs as variations of the guitar-driven techno fight songs of VIIbut there is also a lighthearted, carefree attitude in many of the pieces like Balamb Garden and Breezy that are meant to reflect a school days kind of atmosphere, and succeed, I think. In terms of Uematsus entire catalog, it seems he might have been reaching back towards the goofiness of FFIVs Mystic Mysidia (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LwtdCcviYl4) with tracks like Silence and Motion and Residents and the multipart baroque Dancing Mad from FFVI with The Castle, while also looking forward with the harpsichord Edea pieces, the orchestral arrangements (his first), and, of course, Eyes on Mea type of song that, for better or worse, continues to be a staple of Final Fantasy ending music. Therefore, VIII represents a synthesis of much of his previous work, as IX was, and equally a sign of things to come, too. Its emphasis is on reflecting a variety of moods and locations, and it does that well. And like VII, it contains several classic Uematsu pieces that work beautifully in the context of the game and sound beautiful outside of that context, too.
All those admirable qualities aside, though, we gotta choose the best two. My votes are for Vagrant Story and Final Fantasy VIII.

Vagrant Story
Final Fantasy Tactics
Actually not such a tough choices for me. Some earlier battles were so much tougher than that.

The first battle is hard for me... Final Fantasy VII, is a game that I love even today and so does the music, The Main Theme, I still consider it as the best out of all the series. With a simple melody such as "Do, Re, Mi, Si, La, Do, Re Mi, Sol, Fa, Do, Re, Do" varied and harmonized through out all the songs of that soundtrack, the Main Theme shows the culmination of what you can do with a simple melody such as that.
And then I have Vagrant Story, a game that I love as well. It wasn't love at first sight though. This is one of those that you need to put yourself into it and understand every little detail to understand it. It certainly wasn't thought out to appeal people, it was thought out in a more personal way. The Creative Team involved, working together, thinking of what they can bring to table to make this their ultimate and most ambitious title in every aspect they can think of with the tools they have at disposal.
That's how I Imagine the Development of this title. And I Imagine Sakimoto given the freedom to offer what he can do best at his compositions.
You'll encounter terribly simple scores on this soundtrack, such as "Catacomb", simple and kinda uninspired some people will say, I say for it's objective it works superb, It's Gloom, dark, atmospheric, it transports you there and you are helpless, you're not enjoying your trip there, you are fighting through it, staying alive, undead creatures surround you trying to rip your guts off, you're in touch with the unknown and you're trying to discover what's causing all this, getting to know yourself in all that solitude and thus your quest starts.
And then you will find such complex and varied tracks that are made use of to follow a cutscene, such as those we have Graylands Incident Climax. A composition with 11 to 13 minutes long, the title speaks to you what kind of music you'll expect here. You are experiencing the music that plays during an Incident, that reach to it's Climax.
A burning place, where treason and deceit are the protagonists. The clash between two separate forces, with the intervention of a 3rd force that comes to mediate the situation, yet things are out of control, it presents us who will unravel all this out, with an enforcing and hopeful fanfare. With every intersection speaking to our ears the desperation and axiety of the human beings involved, speaking it's character every single soul. It then follows a tension moment, members of their own forces discusing with each other, things are getting out of control. This soul manages to infiltrate, a clash takes place, things appear to be over, yet the music tells us something else suddenly things got kinectic and frantic. It slows down, cue the Timpani, feels like walls are crumbling down a Titanic sound yet, where's the Titan?. Show more respect for fairy tales and then the entity makes it's appearance, we reached the Climax, the borders of reality and fiction are now bonded together in climatic battle.
At the end of this battle everything now calms, as we feel that we walk to just the door of our new Quest, the sun shines bright and an insipiring breeze cools all our senses, the bells are ringing, the French Horn and Trumpets gives us a sign, the strings reach a crescendo and then it concludes with a fine orchestral hit.
Vagrant Story
O.O
--------------------------------------
For FFT and FFVIII is still a hard one for me. I've never thought that the music of VIII accomplished much for the game that it accomplished much more to the composer rather than the whole product.
VIII's music is easy to fall for, the timbre of the synth used on this soundtrack is very close to actual instruments, the melodies are more refined and tender. They feel much more Real and less dreamful or overly tragic/emotional compared the previous works of Uematsu.
Having it's share of Natural and Nostalgic sound, Uematsu managed to balance his "Rock" onto the classical pieces.
I'm going to repeat myself here, but I've never feel that the music spoke much for the game, it spoke a lot more personally. Probably that's what our composer tried to achieve. As he said that this soundtrack didn't felt the need of Character songs, because he considered them not to be important to the storytelling of the game, yet IMO that's completely the opposite of that the game's story tried to work out.
And the result was interesting, but somethings didn't matched or felt completely out of place, such is the case of the "Rivals" track and "Eyes on Me", the moment were the track is played felt so out of place, that it actually worked better on the Ending Theme. IMO
Final Fantasy Tactics on the other hand is another weird one, because I do love the music and there's no moment that feels bad or out of place.
But from another point of view FFT could be considered as Tactics Ogre 2.0, or the more light-hearted and dreamful version of Tactics Ogre.
Sure there are many melodies that feel rather different, but both have a share of similarities that can be fairly recognizable.
It's hard to me to come with a satisfying conclusion to this 2nd battle.
I'll vote for Final Fantasy VIII, because it has a more interesting background in the terms of the Creative Process of the music.

My vote is for Final Fantasy VIII.
This was a tough one. It came down to the fact that I love Final Fantasy VIII's soundtrack. I appreciate Vagrant Story. I enjoy listening to it. I think it's the more consistent soundtrack, and the one that's better suited to the mood and style of its game. But I don't relish each song the way I do with Final Fantasy VIII. I don't enjoy it on the same level. Either way the votes go, though, we'll have a deserving winner.

I like this Final Battle...
Vagrant Story - I've made myself clear about what I think about FFVIII's Music.
But I've never feel myself that I'm clear to what I think about Vagrant Story's Music.
I may attempt to describe what i think of every single track like I did up there for those 2 Tracks, I've mainly did that analysis to make a contrast of a very few of the things that you can find on this soundtrack. But I never feel that it's enough.
The review made by "Jormungad" on this website Chudah's Corner - Reviews (

I'll probably add more thoughts and perspective into this post later. Right now I'm very tired...

Vagrant Story (

by Hitoshi Sakimoto (2000)
Here is Sakimoto forcefully staking his claim as a major composer. Because of that, theres an air of mystique and experimentation that seeps into this and every subsequent soundtrack Sakimoto has contributed to, whether it takes the form of a surprising harp glissando in the middle of an electronic piece, a Vangelis bass line in the middle of a flute solo, or a mournful trumpet rising out of a battle theme. He has the skills to make complex music accessible to a wide audience, and does so here maybe better than on any other soundtrack he has composed.
Bonus: Sakimoto answers why his career hasn't (

PS2 has definitely waited its turn. But since that doesn't appeal to everyone, how would you all feel about doing two at a time again? The Sakimoto rumble is also ready to go.
Composers, Zelda, and Final Fantasy are all still in the works (as best as I can tell).
More details about each rumble can be found here (

Here's the list in chronological order...
1) The Best of the PS2 64 soundtracks - Started June 2010 [ready]
2) The Best of Hitoshi Sakimoto 16 soundtracks - Started December 2010 [ready]
3) The Composers Rumble 64 composers - Started December 2010 [not ready]
4) The Best of The Legend of Zelda 64/128 songs - Started February 2011 [not ready]
5) The Best of Final Fantasy 64/128 songs - Started February 2011 [abandoned?]

Quite frankly I was going to get a little sad to see another Uematsu soundtrack as the winner of another rumble.

sly 2 and one of the shin megami tensei games. should even the balance out a little more for series-type games. also, i have no idea what the second and third ratchet and clank games are.

I actually Prefer Phantom Brave's Music over Disagaea...
And any Persona Music can actually be out of the list IMO...
But it's your call..
So my suggestion is Phantom Brave over P3 or P4.
But I don't really care much if they're in or not. I'm not that fan of the PS2 music.
So I'm pretty Neutral about this Rumble.
EDIT: Yeah, not a fan of Vocal Jpop music during gameplay... It's toxic for me. My Immune system is not build for that. LOL

Sure. Sly 2 is arguably the weakest in the series (soundtrack-wise) and I'm not too fond of Digital Devil Saga 2. I vote for those to be removed. Which Disgaea do you want in?
Edit: So, how about 1 Disgaea game and Phantom Brave? We're removing 2 games so we need to add 2.

Tales of Symphonia? I know its port was released on ps2 in Japan, but it feels weird that we select it while leaving other 2 PS2 Tales of games that were released in west... How about Tales of Legendia instead? It is the the only Tales without Motoi Sakuraba music and by many percieved as the best OST in series. Nothing against Abyss too, if others would prefer it over Legendia.
btw Being a big fan of Yuki Kajiura I would be really happy to also have Xenosaga II (or III) in this rumble:)

since the 2nd disgaea had about half the songs of what the first disgaea had, i'd go for that.
and instead of sly 2 bein takin out, im more for xenosaga: episode i. its lackin in the music department. its missin town, dungeon and ship themes which most people approve of.

I dunno I kinda like Xenosaga Ep1. Besides, it would be a good idea to not have too many entries from a single series. Basically, removing Sly 2 is a better idea, imo. If you feel too strongly about it, though, we'll remove Xeno. I don't mind too much, either way.
Thus far: Removing SMT: Digital Devil Saga 2 and adding Phantom Brave. Any objections?

09-03-2011, 07:17 PM
well, sly 2 wasnt that bad to be honest. there were a number of themes that i did like. maybe we should remove a second SMT to balance out the list so there isnt more games in a series than it should be.

I think I'm with Aces here...
4 SMT games... Is quite a lot... And we have BOTH Persona music...
If you want so hardly all the Persona Music, delete something of Ratchet and Clank, Jak and Daxter or the 3rd Shadow Hearts Music.
Smarty
09-04-2011, 03:14 PM
That I can deal with. Jak & Daxter: The Precursor Legacy had great music, but the two sequels weren't particularly impressive. Jak 2 leaving the list is something I don't object to. I'd really rather keep both Personas. And I really don't want to see DDS or Nocturne go and I think you agree.

I think, for the Shadow Hearts Covenant one, you can replace Inugami Village with Vicious 1915 (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-p_SFBS-UCc). I know it's nowhere near the same style, but Inugami Village still have the "town" atmosphere going on and there's nothing as intense as Vicious 1915 in the list (Astaroth may be a battle theme but it's far more... soothing in atmosphere than Vicious 1915). For the original Shadow Hearts, Sacrifice ~Alice (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCEHSGycqhs) can easily take over Steal Soul - Tanjou just because it's a better song with better emotions and the like. And finally, for From the New World, you can replace either Opening or one of the ICAROs with Lady Tears I (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DEzdNuaYK0M) because it feels redundant to have TWO ICAROs...
How about Tales of Legendia instead? It is the the only Tales without Motoi Sakuraba music and by many percieved as the best OST in series.qft.

Here's my summary of the discussion so far. Let me know if I got anything wrong.
Add: Disgaea 2, Phantom Brave, Tales of Legendia, Xenosaga 2 (or 3)
Remove: Sly Cooper 2, Digital Devil Saga 2, Tales of Symphonia, Jak and Daxter 2
At this point, I need to know if we're adding Xenosaga 2 or 3.
For the added soundtracks, I also need five song recommendations per soundtrack.
I'll make Mercenary's song changes during the rumble.

In the last battle, we decided that Hitoshi Sakimoto wrote the greatest PS1 soundtrack. This time around, we have to decide if he wrote the greatest PS2 soundtrack, too. At the same time, Vagrant Story has to fend off all his other works.
Before we get started, though, I want to acknowledge how much work Smarty did for the PS2 rumble. Without his recommendations at the macro and micro level, this wouldn't exist.
Round 1, Fight 1 // The Sakimoto Rumble

What arthur said about SotC. It's really on a whole other level. It doesn't hurt that the same can be said about the game either. So, Shadows of The Colossus it is. If you happen to have a PS3, then I must urge you to buy the ICO and Shadow of The Colossus collection, in case you haven't played the originals.
It's also a bit hard not to feel sad about Ratchet and Clank. The music of the series is excellent overall and I hope that at least 1 game from the series will make it to the next round. This match is a bit of a no brainer in Shadow's favor.
As for Sakimoto, Stella Deus: The Gate of Eternity. I haven't heard this before. I dig it.

What's debussy?
Claude Debussy, late-Romantic and Modern Classical composer. His lived on the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th. Widely considered the prime composer that made the transition from the Romantic to Modern classical music.

An intro to Debussy:
- Clair de Lune (

- Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_7loz-HWUM)
- La Mer (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zy7zlStitCE)
Claude Debussy is widely regarded as one of the most influential composers of the 20th century. His harmonies, considered radical in his day, were influential to almost every major composer of the 20th century, especially the music of Maurice Ravel, Igor Stravinsky, Olivier Messiaen, Bla Bartk, Pierre Boulez, Henri Dutilleux, Ned Rorem, and the minimalist music of Steve Reich and Philip Glass as well as the influential Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu [AG's note: in other words, this guy influenced many of the biggest bad asses of 20th century classical music]. He also influenced many important figures in Jazz, most notably George Gershwin, Bill Evans, George Shearing, Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington, Antnio Carlos Jobim, Herbie Hancock and Jimmy Giuffre. Furthermore, he had a profound impact on contemporary soundtrack composers such as John Williams because Debussy's colorful and suggestive style translated easily into an emotional language for use in motion picture scores. In 1999, The Art of Noise released a concept album titled The Seduction of Claude Debussy. The group blended the music of Debussy with drum and bass, opera, hip hop, jazz, and narration, and described the album as "the soundtrack to a film that wasn't made about the life of Claude Debussy." - From Wikipedia

My votes are for Treasure Hunter G and Prince of Persia. Tough call on the first one. I've played and beaten both of those games, and I love both soundtracks. The trick is limiting yourself just to Sakimoto's tracks and saying which lot is the better one. I like Ogre Battle as a game and as an entire soundtrack better, but Sakimoto's work, I think, was stronger with THG.

Disgaea 2 is indeed very good, I'm glad aces voted to include it, however my vote is definitely for Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. It's melodic, emotional and very atmospheric and features some of the best vocal work I've ever heard in a game. It has this crazy Arabian mystery about it and fits perfectly with both the tone and the aesthetic. And, again, it doesn't hurt that the game it's featured in is pretty damn awesome :D

My votes are for ASH and Kingdom Hearts. ASH is a a thrilling, deeply intricate soundtrack. You're not going to be whistling the melodies in the shower, but it's a tour de force of arrangements and variation. Tactics Ogre is nothing to sniff at either (I'm still a huge fan of that moment where Avilla Henya takes off), but the limiting technology makes it seem simplistic next to ASH. Kingdom Hearts is just too much for Zone of the Enders.

Both by quite far.
Trivia: Lament of Innocence was the first game to feature a new castlevania logo, which is the one still being used.

As much as I love FFXII soundtrack... Stella Deus has a warm spot in my heart. Alchemy just kills me. It's simplicity and the Vocal Theme rocks my socks. This soundtrack could easily be called as the FFT2 soundtrack.
Lament of Innocence - If it was GT4. That would've been a different vote.

In an off topic discussion, what mp3 players do you guys use? More specifically, are there any good non-Apple ones out there? My poor Creative Zen Vision from 2006 is on its last leg (as in... won't turn on or turn off). I avoid Apple because of my burning hatred of the iTunes platform (not the monetization of it; more the fact that it overrides your media playback preferences, runs slow and takes up too much memory). Any good ones out there?

I use my cellphone a Nokia 5130. That's it. It uses micro SD cards, you can buy a card reader and load the music and then put the card in the phone or you can just load the music through cable with the Phone connected through the PC. No iTunes or bizarre software needed. It's just normal file transfer.

I use a Galaxy S which has good sound quality, uses Micro SD, and also (along with every android phone) uses simple file transfers to get music onto it. I actually use a streamer with it called subsonic, which streams anything on your computer at its original bitrate if you want it to (even flac, which the gs plays natively) assuming the computer is on and the streamer is running. The Galaxy S II, which is more recent, supports flac too although it uses a Yamaha DAC as opposed to the wolfson found in the original GS. I couldn't tell if you were asking for a media player preference as well, but I use foobar even though it isn't terribly user-friendly at the start.
Anyway, Final Fantasy Tactics.
Also, nice to see the same chaps hanging around here even though I've been out of the thread for a while. Hi!
