I watched KICK ASS, and with low expectations after having read the comic last week; but I was pleasantly surprised. Without the music and Hit Girl it would have been poor, but those two elements raised it above mediocrity.
I don't think I'd watch it again but I enjoyed it for what it was.

The Collector (1965)
Sounds great, added to my Netflix queue, thanks for the review.
Last one I saw was Nightmare City (1980)
From legendary Italian B movie director Umberto Lenzi comes this story about a city overrun by maniacs/crazies contaminated by atomic radiation. While sometimes deemed a zombie movie, it's not. The logic for the maniacs in the film makes absolutely no sense as they aren't hurt or killed by bullets except when they destroy the brain yet smashing their fingers in a door produces pain. The sfx are inconsistent, ranging from decent to downright laughable. The only real good thing about the movie was the score by Stelvio Cipriani.

Genuinely disturbingly creepy film. If you're a passive movie goer it'll likely freak you out, if you're a cinephile you'lll notice some very interesting split screen work and some nice editing in places, and it'll also freak you out.
Possibly the only English Language movie that has ever gave me goose bumps.

Last thing I watched was one half of "Golgo 13", a live version, not the anime, with Sonny Chiba. I hate watching a movie in 2 goes but I had no choice, i got interrupted. It was typical Sonny Chiba fare.

Repo! The Genetic Opera.
Weird. Weird. It's an actual rock opera adapted from a stage production. Best way I can describe it is The Rocky Horror Picture Show crossed with a particularly bad choreographed car crash with an emo rock soundtrack.
It had Anthony Head (Giles from Buffy), Paul Sorvino, Ogre (Skinny Puppy), Sarah Brightman, and Bill Moseley singing. I mean, Paul Sorvino singing!?
Sarah had the best song and scene and moment of pathos; she played a Faustian diva which appealed to me (if you hadn't guessed by my name).
I still don't know if I liked it.
Weird.
Trailer for the curious.

Superstition (1982) - Despite the main character being a wimpy bookworm priest and some shoddy sfx, there were actually some decent things about the film. I felt the death scenes were edited and performed well and I enjoyed the few period flashbacks in the movie. But besides that the last half hour is a mess and makes little to no sense. The wonders of time travel and altering set timelines... It was ok, but I didn't really like the cast tbh (Except Karl Urban, he was brilliant as Bones). Also add in
A cadet fresh from the academy, about to get drummed out, ends up becoming the Captain of the Enterprise at the end of the movie ?!? Kirk Fact#1: After graduating he served on the USS Farragut, NOT the USS Enterprise (which was commanded first by Robert April and then Christopher Pike).
However how the story was done involving the aforementioned 'altering set timelines', it was ok. Wonder what the sequel will have... The Borg? Q? Dominion?

Would have been even better if it was longer, had as much Don & Mike as Raph & Leo, taken longer to return to status quo.
After all, a story that takes place after the ultimate evil has been defeated and the heroes aren't sure what to do with their lives or what their group dynamic should be with no thread to keep them together is a pretty untouched area.

The Fourth Kind - I wish I had been able to follow this film more closely as it had been released as some of the mystique of the film is lost now that the alleged events the film was based off of are now publicly known as conjecture. I feel the film outdoes The Blair Witch Project with its 'real footage'. Great use of distortion in such scenes. The film reminded me a lot of Mothman Prophecies, to the point where I thought it was directed and/or written by the same person. The creepy events are laced well with a haunting score and the performances are very well done by both reenactment actors and the people portrayed in the 'real life' footage.

I wasn't aware of anything before I went into it, and I haven't saw the Mothman Prophecies so it felt fresh to me.
Throughout the viewing I was unsure if the old footage was actually real or not, which added a great deal to the tension.
Also I loved how the split screen effect was used, the black line that separated the two times/places/people was never stationary; it was shaky, as if the very frame itself was uneasy and unable to define the boundries between truth and fiction.

I did not like the rhythm of the movie, it was like adrenaline pumping for 30 min or more at the end and I did not get a good feel of the "time difference" and thought they could've done a lot more with the music (I am growing to be so picky, sorry). Great cast, though. Ellen Page from Hard Candy, Cillian Murphy from Sunshine, but most of all, Joseph Gordon-Levitt from Brick and The Lookout. The ending was very predictable for viewers who watch a lot of movies with twists... This movie did not impress me half as much as Momento did... Then again, I've got strange taste. *Shrug*

The Expendables
God damn. The only marks I really have against this after the first viewing are a mere two(ish) instances of shitty CG blood, and minor ones at that. You might say some of the casting is just done for shallow "ooh look who we got" appeal, especially the "small" cameos, but that's still part of the movie's draw and it's damn cool to see. In terms of just being a fun action movie, which is really all it needed to be - this thing delivers in spades.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World
Oh my god you guys I just saw the greatest movie! It's pretty much the best adaptation of 1 thing to another ever. Everyone in the cast was brilliant and the problem I have with most adaptations of not getting the right actresses for the girl characters is not in this movie! I loved who they picked for Ramona, Kim, & Knives. And while it was very fast passed all the main characters got enough time to feel like real people.
The only problems I have with it are: Ramona was kinda wimpy and passive, The clash at demonhead being so condensed especially Envy Adams role, & Kim Pine's whole history with Scott getting just a quick breeze over.
But other than that I have to say all the changes and original stuff I loved enough to at the very least not hate it. (kinda like loving parts of the english bud of an anime even though the original Japanese is better.)
The music is pure audio fun, I didn't expect to hear Zelda tunes in this and seeing that they got several of the songs Brian Lee O'Malley mentioned as inspiration or just tracks he'd have play if it was a cartoon is joy.
And the alternate ending is a bit more satisfying than the book's simply because it had a clear statement even if it's a bit diffract than the ones suggested by the books.

Evil Laugh (1988) - Another addition in the long line of 80s slasher cheese comes this film about a group of medical interns who begin getting killed off one by one as soon as they set foot in a supposedly haunted house. Low production values mar the movie overall with bad audio, video and sfx. Honestly if there had been more money to throw around, I think it could have been an 80s classic rather than the easily forgotten mess it resulted in.

A Single Man - This film can be described in one word, poetic. A beautiful period piece taking place in the 1960s. The strongest aspects being the production design and cinematography. First time director Tom Ford does an intriguing and meticulous job with the look and feel of the movie with great use of sound (or absence of), well used slow-motion, and color scheme. Colin Firth does a wondrous job as George Falconer, an English professor dealing with the ongoing depressions of the death of his lover. Well written and highly recommended.

If you liked this film at all in it's first release then you'll like the new edition even more. 20+ minutes of new footage, and mostly it's moments of pathos and reconcilliation which the film originally lacked. Much improved version, that makes more sense and while still suffering from pacing problems (the original pacing was a mess) is worth a repurchase; especially since it's less than 10 on blu.:)

The Wizard of Gore (1970) (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xnSTKuzc7Pw) - A grindhouse flick about a creepy magician who performs gory acts of violence on audience members only to return them to their seats presumably unharmed. But when these same audience members end up dead after the act, a local newspaper reporter becomes suspicious. Many components of the film are shoddy including the camerawork, much of the sfx, acting and pacing. But there is definitely an allure to the film with its buckets of blood approach and sleazy characters. While I enjoyed the goriness, the storyline just never added up to anything with the ending leaving me completely puzzled.
Blood: The Last Vampire (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pV5ukdJFGJQ) - Oof where do I start? This film could have been great instead it turned out to be one of the worst adaptations I have ever seen. It just felt uninspired and rushed. The CG looked like crap and there was way too much of it. The story was confusing and the action sequences were poorly shot and edited. Stay far, far away from this one.
The Wizard of Oz - For film studies class, we had to watch this. I just now realized that Dorothy didn't actually overcome the (in my opinion) more important obstacle of finding a way to keep Toto from being taken by Miss Gulch (the woman with the bicycle), because she had a sheriff's order to take the dog away. I mean, what's the point of going through Oz when some rich woman is going to euthanize your best friend tomorrow??

Spoony was 100% right. I couldn't follow the action for shit. That fight in the hallway was like 5 minutes of action in which I had no idea who was doing what. Dolph should have beat Sly's ass for writing him a part that had him being monosyllabic.
INSECT.....I can haz Oscar now?
And Statham talking about his relationship troubles in the middle of a mission. That wins the award for worst subplot attempt EVER.
Sly can do so much better than this. When did he turn into Michael Bay? I mean, seriously. Jesus, the whole thing was horrible ;;

Time Bandits.
Directed by Terry Gilliam it stars Kenny Baker (R2-D2), John Cleese, Sean Connery, David Warner as satan in a face hugger hat, Ian Holm as Napoleon, & Tony Jay as the voice of god.
It's a dark children's comedy that's very Monty Python-ish with kinda the same feel as The Marvelous Miss-adventures of Flapjack.

I don't care about any of that stuff. Hugh Jackman is in a wifebeater, and naked, and Ryan Reynolds is love.

You get to kill a ton of guys in the lab/base in the game, if that's any consolation~
I realize perfectly well why anyone who cares about Deadpool in the least is upset with the movie. My fanboy goggles are just too thick. When I saw bone claws in the trailer, I was already sold

The Burning (1981) - The slasher classic in the same frame as Friday the 13th, a disfigured killer out for revenge. And while it's been proven that it was written before the production of Friday the 13th, it's still something I've seen a hundred times before. Killings on campground settings can be linked back to Mario Bava's Bay of Blood (1971) (
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067656/). On the plus side, some of the death scenes were pretty effective and I did have fun watching it but the whole idea just felt done before.
Arang - A Korean horror which seems at first to be a cookie cutter version of the whole female ghost with long black hair acting creepy and killing people thing but then turns out to have a nice twist to it. But the actors seem bored and the music does nothing to heighten the scenes of horror or drama.

I didn't mind the Wolverine movie too much. There are some goofy parts (wouldn't we all be happy to never see another skyward scream?) and yeah, the adamantium injection/bonding scene didn't feel like it had enough weight to it, but I was entertained overall. That's one of those movies that people ragged on me for being ok with, which really pisses me off. I hate the idea that any one person is right or wrong about whether or not a movie is "good" or "bad" - it's all up to the individual.
I stopped being interested in reviewing movies soon after having to deal with that. When I tried to start again with Iron Man 2 one of the same friends that was a jerk about me liking a certain movie last year rubbed it in my face yet again because I had some problems with IM2. The "you liked that but not this? You are stupid. You have bad taste." attitude. Ruined it for me all over again.
I don't think I would maintain any sanity as an actual popular reviewer, too many people would be all UR DUMB UR DUMB and I have no tolerance for that :( Even in small portions it makes me want to shell up and disappear forever.
Expendables
Spoony was 100% right.
Oh no :(
I think he was right in that the end action was too quickly edited, kind of like the fast bit of bar action in Inglorious Basterds post tense-build up, but I didn't find it hard to tell what was going on.
Other points of his were easily off base, like the validity of the major Rourke scene being the primary one in my mind, but eh, like I said in my piddly review, it's definitely a love it/hate it movie, very polarizing. The 2008 Rambo was much the same in that regard. I think that was maybe a better movie but this one was more fun.
For me, and stuff

Night Train (1959) - B&W Polish film about a man and a woman inexplicably brought together in a train's sleep car while a murderer is on the loose. Beautifully shot and thought-provoking imagery highlights this mystery. The characters and their motivations are the most interesting pieces of the film, especially the aforementioned couple. Though it's sad that the film's intrigue is shattered at the climax. A lot of the film is obviously filmed on a stage but much is actually filmed on a moving train. The timing of certain shots seems almost impossible yet the director successfully pulls them off.

Not only is the music great but I also appreciated the sets and costumes.

I first saw this about 10 years ago, and no matter how many times I see it, it still amazes.
It’s shot on 16mm B/W film, with stop motion and time lapse effects alongside the usual live action, and only lasts about an hour. It does have a plot, but it’s the machine meets flesh imagery that lingers.
And it has a great industrial soundtrack by Chu Ishikawa.

Dir. by Mamoru Oshii. It lasts only 35 mins and is less concerned with narrative as it is about mood. It's split into 3 parts with the 3rd part being the best, and most easily understood. While it's not a bad movie it's not one of my favorite Disney films. Most of the main cast are rather dull with little personality compared to any of the other "princess/prince" couples, I think it's mainly cause it's historical whereas Disney's other movies are based off of fairy tales or books. Plus they made the Indians all noble and stoic so they didn't have as much personality as say Christan Bale's character.

I'll admit that the first five minutes felt a bit rushed and didn't impress me but as the movie went along it got better. There's nice action and especially adventure throughout the film and while there are definite plot holes and too many Dawson's Creek moments between Dastan (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Princess Tamina, I enjoyed it for the most part.

Devil - From a story written by M. Night himself comes this intriguing and well shot thriller. It pretty much all feels like an episode of the Twilight Zone, just more drawn out. Great cinematography especially in the first few minutes as well as some nice POV in the elevator. Well done directing as the unnerving tension really builds as it goes on. I feel Night redeemed himself a bit with this one after the atrocious Happening.
Whiteout - Kate Beckinsale stars as a U.S. Marshal investigating the first ever murder on the frozen lands of Antartica. While the extreme cold and weather conditions add a nice element of danger, they also destroy the action sequences, as it's hard to tell what's going on. The story, sadly, is the least interesting component to the film. The Cold War flashback that occurs in the first few minutes of the film was more interesting than the rest entirely.

a mexican animated movie about the fight for independence in mexico.
it was good until they started singing. the most iconic moments were overshadowed by fucking songs.
i didnt want to hear hidalgo singing about the independence, i wanted to hear the legendary scream for independence (viva mexico)

I was surprised at this movie. I thought it was going to be another Dragonball movie but instead it reminded me of the first Mortal Kombat movie. There was actually a story involved and the fighting scenes were done pretty well too.
I feel Night redeemed himself a bit with this one after the atrocious Happening.

Not so much as sat down and watched it, as let it play while I did stuff.
The Man Who Knew Too Much. Before I saw it, I thought it was about a guy who had way too much knowledge and either 1. went crazy, or 2. found a way to channel brainwave patterns to manipulate others into being his slaves. Needless to say, I was sorely disappointed. The movie has an insane music scene, though.

It's free movie week and Shrek was sold out by the time we got there and that was the only other one.
The vampires don't have fangs and they're made out of rock so you smash them.
That movie could have been over in 5 minutes. Only one damn thing happens in it to move the plot along.
Plot should probably be in about 6 sets of quotation marks....

Iron Man 2 - It started off well establishing the villain and heads into some nice action but I felt the film had too much Tony Stark and not enough Iron Man. The second half of the film just didn't have that oomph that the first part had and I found the bickering between Stark and Pepper became annoying. I did enjoy it but not as much as the first one.
There's no such thing as too much Tony Stark.
To be honest, I find Iron Man to be boring as hell. It's all about that beautifully twisted man <3

Dark Night of the Scarecrow (1981) - A CBS Saturday night movie just released on dvd about a man wrongfully executed and the subsequent vengeful murders of the vigilante posse responsible. The restoration and dvd transfer is amazing. The first thing you really notice about the film is the incredibly effective score which reminded me a lot of Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The deaths are tastefully done and edited extremely well, leaving it to your imagination. And while it's a horror film, it still retains a feeling of fantasy all the way to the finale. Well written, acted and directed. Highly recommended.

Play Misty for Me (1971) - Starring in his directorial debut, Clint Eastwood plays popular disc jockey Dave Garver who has a one night stand which becomes a nightmare. Nice acting from psycho bitch Jessica Walter who snaps at a moment's notice, clinging to Eastwood's character like a bad rash. For the most part I enjoyed it except for certain scenes that felt out of place like the date between Garver and his girlfriend Tobie which ended up with them making love and cuddling naked in the woods. And a jazz festival performance that had nothing to do with the story and ended up with more screen time than the characters. Other than that it was a great thriller.

Why did Rhodes take all the hammer weapons when he only put the minigun and bunker buster on it? The other weapons he took was an automatic psitol, a pump action shotgun, and an assault rifle none of which was used or fit onto the War Machine.

I was expecting normal sci-fi by numbers but was surprised to see an almost Cinma vrit approach. And it had a CGI character that I genuinely cared about; I don't recall that ever happening outside of a fully animated film. Very good film. I look forward to the inevitable sequel.

SHould be fun to see what they'll do to the "Alien Invasion" movie. There's gonna be a lot of those coming out, Battle LA, 2 possible Independence Day sequels, that one with Turkleton from Scrubs and the vacuum ships, 2 others I've heard about.

There are many similarities between WoW and ID4, the most obvious being the
invading force arriving and doing nothing for a while and eventually being defeated by a virus
I've not seen Spielberg's. I can't stand his happy sugar coated endings, so I avoid his work unless I'm forced to watch it (Schindlers List is exempt from this judgement, it's really good). I'd love to see a proper Victorian period version, too. :)

The Human Centipede: First Sequence - A lot of hype surrounding this film and while it's not great, I did enjoy it. There are many nice cringe-worthy moments especially in the surgery scenes. The acting is poor but that's not as important as the goal of the film, the human centipede, which is delivered. The story is simple and the ending is lackluster but I appreciate the film nonetheless for its sheer gall.

There's definitely something lost in the translation such as the subtlety of the original and the digital effects kind of bugged me. I mean they looked good but just felt a little out of place. Neil Gaiman wrote it first as a novel. It's a kids novel so it's very easy to read. Then it was adapted into a graphic novel. Is that what you mean by a manga? Or is there an actual black and white manga too?
