The last movie I saw was '28 Days Later'.

Now, a noteworthy thing to mention; when last I watched it, I recall being very pissed-off about something, over half a year ago. Yesterday I felt the need to pop it in and give it a second chance, and this time I loved it. I don't know what it is, the story, the atmosphere, or the characters, but somehow this movie just won me over this previous time watching it. In fact, I could almost go as far as to say it's one of my favorites now. It's not just your typical shoot-em-up movie full of gore; I mean it does have its gory moments. But a lot of peoples' disappointment from this movie comes from the fact that it was initially advertised as this horrifically frightening movie that would leave viewers unable to sleep for weeks, and I admit that's what I bought it expecting. But when I watched it, so furious about whatever the hell, I wound up hating it because it wasn't what I was hoping for. I wanted something scary enough that it would take my mind off of whatever had upset me. But instead, this movie offers far more than just chilling action against fast-moving zombies (that have since been seen in various other media, from games to movies, imo making them a little less frightening) but instead focuses around the struggle between man vs. man. Its meaning is more than skin-deep. It gives the viewer something to really think about. And while I admit the characters aren't the most memorable, nor likable in all cases, but the climax is probably one of the greatest moments in a movie I've seen for some time. You find yourself cheering for the protagonist (whether he's lost his mind, or whether what he's doing is the right thing or not), and you begin to see the irony in the whole situation; an infection has turned scores of once-normal humans into mindless killers, but this bears little difference from 'the four weeks before that', where people were already killing people. You begin to sympathize with the infected (or at least I did). Now, the idea of this 'virus' simply being called 'rage' feels a little ridiculous at first . . . but somehow, it really couldn't have worked any other way. Those are just my thoughts.

But yes, that's the last movie I saw, and the novel I just wrote about it.

Whatever Works - I'm not really accustomed to Woody Allen's films, in fact this is the first film of his I've seen from start to finish, but it was enjoyable enough. Larry David was really the reason why I wanted to see this film, but I'd say I was more enamored with Evan Rachel Wood. Not only is she something to look at but she was the best actor in the film. Larry David played his role well enough but sometimes I felt like it was just a long episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm. And the dialogue felt too scripted much like a Kevin Smith film. Allen should have let David improvise a bit.

Just finished watching Paranormal Activity and it was quite effective. At first it just felt like an episode of Ghosthunters where there's tons of setup and then oop I heard a bang, the end. But thankfully it progressed and increasingly freaked me out. Watched it alone and in my dark room which helped. And it basically is another version of The Blair Witch Project except that PA actually delivers on the scares. Though I enjoyed the alternate ending a lot more than the theatrical.

That's a film I mean to watch, Lukey. I've heard mixed things though, but given how close to the bone the 1981 hunger strike still is for many people from the north, myself included, it's always going to struggle to please everyone against that backdrop. I might even watch it this weekend now since you've put the idea in my head.

Anyhow, went to see the Wolfman last night, and actually thought it was pretty enjoyable. I don't think I've seen a really bad film so far in 2010, 2009 was wall-to-wall wank for the best part.

Alright, watched Hunger just now, incredibly powerful.

There are films I try to avoid watching (especially when other people are around) with regards the history of the North, the two Bloody Sunday films being a great case in point, because I get so upset watching them and have a tendency to cry. The scene in this when the RUC riot officers are drafted in and beat the prisoners took that being upset to a whole new level, though. I broke down, had to pause the film and go compose myself for a good five to ten minutes.

I don't think it was a perfect film, though, not by any means. I think the hunger strike itself was dealt with very quickly compared with the rest of the film and without any mention of the wider political and social implications the protest had, though that may have been an incongruous thing to do given how the story had almost been entirely told from within the confines of the Maze. Also, ten men died in the 1981 hunger strike, I don't think it's right that 9 of them are relegated to a footnote at the end.

I don't really want to say, or even know if I could say, whether or not I enjoyed it. However, any film that is able to elicit such an emotional reaction- and I concede that I'm highly susceptible to the content- is doing something very, very right.

The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury.

This can't be classed as a movie, it's a short 25 minute animation, but is based on a movie. If the name PETER CHUNG means anything to anyone here, he directed and did the character design for this. And, as usual his inimitable style shines through. Forget about that awful Riddick movie, because this is much better. Too short, though. Oh, and Keith David does one of the voices. :)

I'm glad I got you into watching it, Moss. I have to say, I thought it worked well that the real insight into the effects of starvation were kept to the final act of the film, since there was more to the story than simply the prisoners' condition during the strike. I've been hospitalised for severe dehydration before (obviously not to the extent that was seen here), so the vividness of those scenes was less than comfortable for me.

I also had to stop during the riot police scene, that was just far too much for anyone. I'm not as familiar with this whole issue as much as you are, obviously, though I think the movie relies on the audience having an idea of what was happening at the time. It's definitely made me want to learn more about it.

What did you think of the conversation between Bobby and the priest? I think I shed a tear or two during that one, especially when he's talking about his days as a cross-country athlete. Bobby's quote about his life being "a real life, not some theological exercise" was particularly powerful to me.

Yeah, it's a great scene, one of the best I've ever watched. Definitely liked the anecdote about the foal and how it summarised his position regarding the hunger strike. Though I think the whole conversation is fictitious it's still amazing on film.

I watched The Wrestler last night. First time seeing it. I don't generally like that hand held vrit style, but Rourke was totally watchable. The best, most heartfelt moments came when the Clint Mansell score crept in. The rest of the soundtrack was awful 80's big hair rock. Good film.

Suicide Club (2001) - A very dark and disturbing J-Horror about an investigation into a series of suicides in modern day Japan. And I say dark as in dark comedy as I found a lot of the gore to be comical. I'm not sure if this was intentional or due to lack of budget. But when a woman preparing dinner for her family begins to chop through her own fingers without blinking an eye, it should be meant as funny, but you really need the stomach for it. Much of the film is symbolic and comments on the state of modern family traditions and the information age, specifically pertaining to the internet. It's something that needs to be truly watched repeatedly to understand. I once heard someone say that a lot of Japanese films are like poems (which is fitting since the director Shion Sono is also a poet), they're not to be understood by simply seeing the images, but by looking underneath at what they represent. This leads to a far from cognizant ending, leaving the viewer puzzled and wanting more.

Dead Snow - Norwegian zombie flick about a group of med students holed up in a cabin in the woods. Obvious references to Evil Dead. Just the idea of a Norwegian Nazi zombie movie sounded great to me but the first hour of the film felt like watching someone's vacation video as it was mostly scenes of the group having fun, drinking and being stupid. Also a serious lack of score that might have added any sort of creepy ambiance to the film. Instead the soundtrack was filled with Norwegian metal. On the plus side, there's a serious amount of blood and gore in the film, especially in the last 20 minutes or so. But overall it was simply an amateur attempt at filmmaking.

The Entity - A frightening account of a single mother raped by an unseen force. The film's high point were the performances and effective sound design though at times the music became a bother. The story starts off strong but when a group of parapsychologists decide to try and capture the force, it becomes laughable at times. It was hard to get to sleep after this one.

Warlock (1989) - I vaguely remember seeing this film in my childhood and I can see why I might have liked it when I was younger as it feels more like children's horror with campy cartoon-like gore and cheesy acting and plot. Though at times the film is endearing, the annoying main character, her childlike vocabulary and terrible special effects ruin what little I enjoy about it.

Terror Train (1980) - A typical slasher flick starring a young Jamie Lee Curtis. Also the surprising addition of David Copperfield, his only film credit to date. If you tend to watch enough slashers they all eventually blend together: a past tragedy, in this case a young college student pushed over the edge, a passage of time (3 years) and a chance for revenge in a isolated location (a moving train). Also a serious lack of sexuality for a train full of drunk college students.

Alien 3 Directors Cut. It was like watching a different movie. Gone is the dog, replaced by another creature. The newer cut is 138mins and the theatrical was 109 mins. But there are also scenes removed so the extra footage actually amounts to more than half an hour. 100 times better than it was before.

So very true...

Last movie I watched was the Kurt Russell movie Tombstone. Based off of the events in Wyatt Earp's life. Kurt was brilliant in the lead role, and Val Kilmer did a good job as Wyatt Earp's friend, ex-dentist turned killer, Doc. Holliday.

It's based on a short penned by Richard Matheson called "Button, Button", but yea, it was filmed before as a Twilght Zone episode. :) I haven't saw the TZ one.

Yea. :) Charlton Heston movie. The opening scene is great, as he drives about the deserted city. I'd recommend it if you like 70's films.

The same source text was also used in a 1964 movie starring the one and only Vincent Price, called "The Last Man on Earth". I haven't saw it yet. Would love to.

In Bruges (2008) - In a Golden Globe winning performance, Colin Farrell plays a distraught hitman on the run. The acting is of course incredible from not only Farrell but the supporting actor Brendan Gleeson. The great writing comes through in the quirky little chit-chat spread out through the film in the oddest of times. The film contains loads of humor coupled with some nice action at the end. And while there are some nice twists and turns in the story there could have been a few less as it drags on at times.

The Crazies (1973) - A small budget on this one but still a decent flick from Romero. The characters and situations are interesting enough that too much gore really isn't needed. What I liked most about it were the iconic American scenes being played with. Like the grandma knitting, right before she stabs a guy to death with her needle. I do wish they had played with more of this though. I haven't seen the remake but I think it was a good idea to redo this, especially in this day and age. I think the film has some good ideas but definitely just needed a larger budget to pull off more craziness.

I thought it was lulz :o

The possibly exaggerated for drama, E True Holywood Story style explanation of the commentary - Smith became a recluse for a while right after the movie came out. Even SModcast went on hiatus. The film got positive reviews and was projected to be a great box office success, early buzz was good, but it underperformed, hit by several factors - being released rather unfortunately at the same time as High School Musical 3, being an R comedy, and the fact that it was barely promoted because of "Porno" being in the title. It apparently sent him into a mini-depression, and he didn't even want to do the commentary, so he didn't.

Kick-Ass

Hitgirl feels absolutely forced, like they were just having a little girl curse because they could. When has the whole pretending to be gay to get close to a girl ever worked or not been offensive?

When he got stabbed and run over, that should have been the end of the movie.

"I'm just a dick in a wetsuit" This is when I yelled AT LEAST YOU KNOW!

"I guess this is the last time I'm putting this mask on." I yelled I WISH TO HELL IT WAS!

Then I walked out.

I saw Spaceballs with five or so people and everyone was miserable. The fun of the movie was dead. It was not enjoyable at all.

A year later - saw it with two different people, we had a great time, the movie seemed hilarious.

Just strengthens my theory that, at least sometimes, the surrounding crowd can alter how well a movie is perceived. If you saw it with a bunch of assholes...

I need no companionship to be an asshole, but you know this.

It's been more positively received than anything.

I think the point about Hit-Girl's dialogue could be attributed to most expletive-filled characters in movies. How often is it really necessary versus merely done...because? Even something well written like say, Pulp Fiction, is not above using excessive cursing for laughs. Do you think there's any deep meaning behind lines like "I'm a mushroom cloud laying mother fucker, mother fucker!!!" Nah. Is it something most people would even say? Nah. "Mother fucker, mother fucker" is just a funny gag phrase, another fanciful little layer of a fictitious hard-R world. It's not as brilliant, but I don't think Hit-Girl calling people cunts is really all that different.

Neg

SLJ cursing sounds lightyears more natural than her. I've already told Jeff that maybe it's just that she's a horrible actress.

You know I love cursing. It kills me to have to agree with these uppity parents complaining about this, but I do this time :o

It's an 11 year old saying shit 11 year olds usually don't say, played for laughs. I don't think it was really supposed to sound "right."

Neg
04-28-2010, 06:14 AM
Even if it isn't meant to sound natural that doesn't mean it makes it an enjoyable choice of character trait. It sounds stilted and bad and it isn't funny or badass. It's just THERE.

So much of the movie just felt THERE. His motivations aren't really developed, the characters aren't really developed. We get like some comic panels explaining Hit Girl and Big Daddy's origin and that's it.

Most of the movie is Kick Ass dancing in front of his mirror.

Lunchbox McGillicuddy
04-28-2010, 06:20 AM
It's not funny to you, for a lot of people it is. It seems the "bit" just didn't work for you, and that's fine. I would never argue against that. It's far more valid than saying it was done "just because."

I don't care if people don't like things that I like at all, but if there's a reason given that doesn't make sense to me I have to say WUT

Neg
04-28-2010, 06:23 AM
I hear in the comics it's even worse because

Big Daddy just made it all up.

But, whatever, people can like whatever they want. I like Matrix Revolutions and XIII~

I love fairy girls but don't like furries, and evil singing Satan pollution voiced by Tim Curry is a far greater villain than an evil army guy.

Kicked in the Head - I'm a big fan of Kevin Corrigan and I was very excited to see this film as he wrote and stars in it but it was just a mess. There's really no plot whatsoever, just the character of Redman (Corrigan) blindly sauntering through each situation, waxing poetry and behaving inanely. The acting is obviously improvised in a few cases, which turns out horribly and certain lengthy scenes could have been highly cut down. But the title definitely fits as that's what you feel like by the end of the film.

Ponyo - After seeing CG animated movies all year, it's nice to see one traditionally animated, and Hayao Miyazaki makes some of the best. An awe-inspiring decor beneath the sea and a touching and beautiful story. Great interesting character and creature designs as well. I'm sure this film would be suitable for the entire family.

And I shall chime in with you. AWESOMENESS OF A MOVIE!! LOVE IT. No other movie can have me view so many times and still feel like I get something new out of it every time.

Such a tiring name to type, but ok: BAD LIEUTENANT: PORT OF CALL - NEW ORLEANS

This is 2 hours of Nicolas Cage wandering around New Orleans, trying to solve a case whilst completely out of his mind on drugs. Hijinks ensue! Entertaining, to say the least.

Nine Dead - The film is a blatant Saw rip-off and while some of the acting is sub-par, the story is intriguing and the ride fun enough to stay till the finish. The ending isn't much of one, but it was nice to see Melissa Joan Hart again.

In Theaters - Kick Ass!
It was awesome if I do say so myself! I think its a must see for comic book fans!

On TV - Sugar
Its about a Dominican pitcher who got signed to an MLB farm team and how he struggles to adjust to life away from home, and ultimately finds a new life in the states. It pretty much shows the life of the average Latin American ballplayer (who are given high expectations from family and friends) who don't end up making it and rather than go back to their native countries in shame, decide to make a new life for themselves here in the states (especially in New York which in Latin America is considered the Mecca of baseball cause of the Yankees  ).

Iron Man 2 last night which is alright but I preferred the first and I think Jon Favreau is a terrible director and I think the story is all over the place and I think that maybe if RDJ wasn't in it I wouldn't like it at all. But since he is I'm willing to overlook a lot.

The Disappearance of Alice Creed tonight. Not very good.

The Collector - From the writers of Saw IV-VII comes another trap filled torture-fest. This time a small time crook breaks into a house in search of a weighty gem but soon finds out he's not the first one to arrive. An insane and crafty psychopath has set up an array of traps within while he tortures the family. The crook is the family's only hope. While the premise is intriguing, the story never really reveals too much about the Collector and his reasons, not even a glimpse, which made it hard to continue watching. Good gore and suspense throughout.

Moon - Sam Rockwell stars in this sci-fi drama about a lone engineer on a moon base and his strange discoveries into his employer's secrets. The sfx are great for such a low budget film but the story becomes a little tangled later in the film. Also I felt it could have been better if Rockwell had turned down the comedy a tad and gone full out dramatic.

Ironman 2.

It started off OK but right after the Abrams trailer the picture cut out and the first 15 minutes was skipped over and them it much have been the part where the villain reviled the master plan there was another break. It was the midnight showing too.

I loved it and the only real problem is not just with the Ironman but a lot of recent movies in general a large build up of the villain and the final show down not even lasting 2 minutes. Nearly every major plot point and action scene was in the trailers like how the only part of the Mecha rumble that wasn't shown was Ironman using rockets and the laser spin finish.

Baise-moi.

Not bad, considering the two women that directed it had never directed a movie before. I think the DOP maybe had a hand in it. The editing was better than I expected.

And I loved the disrespect of Capn! XD I hate Capn so I found that hilarious.

It's not perfect. I can think of about 5 things off hand that annoyed me. Mainly how abrupt the final battle is, and how little development Vanko gets.

But, I liked it a lot, anyway. I was entertained. Sam Rockwell <3
