Doom 2/5

It could have been an enjoyable sci-fi shoot 'em up but most of the action is dark and out of focus, if not over far too quickly. The whole 1st person perspective sequence is needlessly nauseating, I've both watched other people play fps live as well as seen videos for reviews and could tell what was going on just fine without getting dizzy but not in this movie. The simple story of space marines going to Mars to kill demons is changed to some G-gnome or evolution bullshit and there's an added the army is bad 'cuz they kill people plot point shoe horned in at the end of the 3rd act so the story isn't all that compelling. Plus most of the monsters from the game are left out.

Monster House 4/5

Kinda reminded me of The Goonies. The animation and character designs ran the razor's edge between stylized & uncanny valley. There's an actual monster origin story for all the paranormal happenings.

The Wolfman 3/5

Superbly executed averageness. Great cast performed standardly. Story too similar to the 1941 version to be original but too many alterations to be s straight up re-telling. The best part is the Wolfman design and make up which is essentially a modern souped up version of the Lon Chaney make up.
Not the greatest but I don't think you'll hate yourself for watching it either.

I liked the part with the guy falling into quicksand and turning the gun on himself so the wolfman can't kill him horribly only to find the gun empty and then the wolfman just knocks his head off the next second.
Wolf battle was kinda dorky.
What happened to Hugo Weaving? He was bit but we didn't see him killing himself or having someone else do it.

The Final, on SciFi (Oh yeah, it's SyFy now ). Didn't see the entire thing due to late-morning class, but I saw up to the guy cutting her fingers off. Pretty chilling, even though it does go several leagues over the top once or twice. Would've loved to see it in the theaters, though I don't know if it ever made it to the big screen. Seems they borrowed a few cheap ideas from Rob Zombie's Halloween remake  (another film that gets a little too formulaic in spots, but often adds to and enriches the original) But on the whole, I liked what I saw. Gas masks + voice disguisers = bad news. Just for future reference

Malevolence (2004) - A nice throwback to horror flicks like Halloween, Evil Dead and others. Even though it's obviously low-budget, it's never a problem as the suspense is always there. The music is the component most like earlier slasher flicks as it perks up whenever the killer appears. 4 out of 5. I'll be watching the prequel Bereavement next.

Honestly, I re-watched Poison Ivy: The New Seduction. I think it's great, in it's own way. I'm not a harsh film critic. I think it's about a seven or eight, for being a dated, cheesy, softcore flick. It's pretty far, in mood, from the original.

The Social Network was the last newer film that I saw, and I also enjoyed that. It was more entertaining than I expected, but I'm not sure why it won awards and got so much acclaim. I'd probably rank it about the same, or a titch lower.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Not bad... still fun to see Captain Jack Sparrow (savvy) running around causing trouble like only he can... but it felt a bit different. A good movie, but just different... not in a bad way either.

X-Men First Class: If I was to ignore everything I've read in the comics about the X-Men's early years etc, I'd say this is a great movie and tie in to the rest of the X-Men franchise. However... I can't ignore what I've learnt over the many years of reading comics... so while it is a good movie, I can't say I really enjoyed it.

Cedar Rapids (2011) - Described as a fish-out-of-water tale starring Ed Helms as a naive insurance salesman who travels outside of his region for a convention. Not a great premise and the movie certainly isn't great but I would recommend it as a rental if you're in the mood for something funny. I was mostly interested in seeing Ed Helms as the main starring actor. He carries the film just fine with some great supporting characters played by Sigourney Weaver, John C. The End of Evangelion

This was the used copy I got off amazon and it played fine I think. The transfer could have been better what with the picture kinda too bright and washed out at times, I know it's not just a style thing since it didn't look like that when I 1st watched it on the computer. The extra stuff is curious, most of the adds are just reused from the 90s with separate prices for english dubs and for some strange reason the more expensive japanese dubs. Plus links to long since dead websites and the hilarious shipping instructions of just writing down the titles you want on a piece of paper and mailing it to a fan club address and being sure to include your drivers licence # if your sending a check.

The title screen is pretty darn cool with Jesus bleibet meine Freude as the background music with Shinji screaming occasionally and the movie title slowly degrading, falling off, or burning out.

28 Weeks Later. I give this film a solid 10/10. The 100% spoilerific short review below will explain why.

Man, am I glad I gave this one a chance. Stellar expectations caused me to harbor some disappointment for 28 Days Later at first, but I've watched it about five times now and clearly I thoroughly enjoy it. Thought I'd give its sequel a spin this time around and I have to say it was well worth the wait on my part. I think this has become one of my favorite movies of all time, and certainly one of the better horror-type films of the past decade. To put my take into perspective, the last good horror film I recount was made before 2000. Hell, before 1995. Saw and Hostel fans will immediately raise their beagles in protest, but those I view less as horror and more as suspensemore torture porn than anything else.

28 Weeks Later probably doesn't count as 'horror' to certain moviegoers, but as someone who considers himself entirely desensitized to all things violent, bloody, and all-around scary, I have to admit this thing sure was intense. Only gripe I have is, all the likable characters have to die, while the ones with no personality make it through to the end -_- Don was truly my favorite part, even as an Infected (it's so 90s to refer to them as 'zombies' anymore). Most of my predictions fell flat on their face and I found myself rethinking horror stereotypes all together.

The laundry list of bad reviews for this movie, calling it 'predictable', are highly questionable. Maybe I don't watch enough horror'I dunno'. Still, this had a great deal of potential and I think it all came full circle.

The whole subplot of the woman being immune and harboring a possible cure wouldn't realistically have to come to fruition, so quite frankly I applaud them for not obeying all the rules of the fiction handbook and actually making this feel a little more like something that could potentially happen. I even anticipated Don was going to have a sudden moment of revelation when faced with his kids again at the end, and maybe even stop trying to kill them; should'a known better ^^ I was constantly finding myself shocked by the sudden twists and turns I'm not used to seeing in these kinds of movies. The good guys don't always survive, and fiction needs to stop holding their hand every moment of the journey. This movie did a fine job of portraying this in a better way than just recycling tired, reused formulas for conveying what little plot there is (and honestly, what more need there be?).

There is the occasional "Oh come on, nobody would do that!" or "What idiot would do that in that situation?!" but you have to remember they're portraying a violent outbreak, and nobody is going to behave 100% logically under such circumstances. Though I will say, the last thing I'm going to do is grab onto a helicopter and nearly bring it crashing to the ground when things are clearly under control >.< I thought the scene where the snipers couldn't differentiate between the Infected and the normal citizens was quite well done, and this definitely had my heart racing a couple of times. I also thought the Infected were handled with a lot more attention to the scary factor this time around. The concept of the first film is the scare factor; once the Infected come onscreen it just falls a little flat (sort of like with I Am Legend, though not to the same extent). This time around the Infected get far more screen time, and it's much more creepy to hear them scream and see them sprint by onscreen.

Overall, do not let any bad reviews cloud your judgment. Go into it with an open mind. Hell, even if you haven't seen 28 Days Later you could still appreciate this; you don't really have to know much backstory going in. It pretty much explains itself as it goes along, though if you don't know what the virus is I hate to say it may seem laughable:

RAGE! Pure, unadulterated, RAGE! Caused by chimps watching too much CNN, then coughing blood on peoples' faces!

. . . So my diagnosis is, this is a solid suspense/horror movie. If you've never seen 28 Days Later it'll seem mild compared to this. If you have seen 28 Days Later it'll seem mild compared to this. Don't anticipate just another big-budget, no-quality sequel to cash in on the success of the original (goddamn Joy Ride 2, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, etc. >.<). This is far better in terms of edge-of-your-seat suspense, and overall memorable quality. It's what most people who saw 28 Days Later's trailers were probably expecting the first time around.

Buy it. Watch it. NAO!

Don't know if this was the last movie I saw, but...Inception (3.5 out of 5). Something about this movie kind of turned me off. Maybe it was the ber-sleek mood of everything, maybe it was the impossibly artificial/superficial/pretentious/"crazy intelligent yet annoying" characters (i.e. Ariadne, whose very name makes me cringe, considering I wrote a fifteen page paper on Ariadne's Lament by Claudio Monteverdi), maybe it was the lack of explanation for what was going on and why, maybe it was the complete ridiculousness of it all, or maybe it was the fact that it was an endurance run with the viewer's attention, or maybe it was a combination of any/all of the above. It's not a bad movie by any means, and it really made you think. I didn't get wholly invested in it, but the movie also failed to draw me into it.

EVEN if it is so, i still prefer it over PA. simply because its in space. since i am a borderline conspiracy theorist (withouth actually theorizing anything), this movie made me think, why did we really never went back to the moon? (and for that matter, did we ever? much solid evidence points towards we didnt and even if we did, why stop). apollo 18-19 were really cancelled? officialy yes, but since black ops apply to pretty much everything, i have to question any official "word". mainly because i myself have done my share of deniable operations (pretty words for mild vandalism and espionage) when i was younger. none besides the participants know of said ops.

It was fun, spectacular, Downey jr and Law have a very good chemistry on screen, fun to watch1!
But it's not as ingenious as Sherlock should be... things in the story were either predictable or forced as if they were like a magical puzzle.

Concerning the music, well I like Zimmer, it was a nice score, the theme of Sherlock is recognizable and nice, the rest was nice. But not very ingenious as well....so it fitted the movie! LOL

edit: Well, I have to revise my opinion about that...the score itself has much more...need to listed to it more often

13 Assassins. 4 out of 5. Obviously not as good as Seven Samurai, but I liked how they weren't quite making a remake of it. In terms of criticism, I think the beginning was way too dark to tell what was going on, the opening text giving the plot went WAY too fast (at least in the subtitles), the characters weren't fleshed out enough and a lot of them looked the same, the bad guy was too obviously evil, and the big fight scene came too early for me. Other than that, it was a good movie.

Death Rides a Horse (1967) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0064208/). 4/5

Such a good fuckin' movie! I had never seen this before, but I was very pleasantly surprised by this quasi-Dollars Trilogy spaghetti western shot a year after The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly. In my opinion, this far exceeds many other 60s ventures in this genre, partly because it has Lee Van Cleef in it (Angel Eyes from TGTBTU), but also because the plot isn't that predictable and it doesn't dick the audience around. I don't want to claim it's the greatest Western out there, but it ranks up there with some of the best, which is unfortunate because it's not heard of very much. I have to admit, I didn't really like the main protagonist all that much, but even so, I could see past it.

This movie really shows that it's possible for other directors to make the archetypal Leone spaghetti western. It maintains that distinct classic feel without being too gritty (Django) or refined (Rio Bravo). It's (yes, the syncing of voice and mouth is pretty awful sometimes) while retaining its own distinct identity and never feeling like a rip-off. Plus: it's got Ennio Morricone (composer for The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly), Luigi Pistilli (Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More), and Mario Brega (Fistful, TGTBTU)! To me, having only seen this first in 2012, is sort of like a nostalgic reunion of awesomeness (although Clint Eastwood, sadly, is missing). I highly recommend this for anyone interested in spaghetti westerns. It's not the greatest western in the world but it definitely brings back the magic that possessed me when watching the Dollars Trilogy for the first time.

Pi (1998): 3.5/5

A good film, and definitely a strong debut by Aronofsky, but it still seems a bit fake at times. Basically, the main character is searching for a set of 216 digits that do certain things (such as, predict the stock market). An analogy is made through the Japanese game of Go, where he says if there is a limitation on the rules (and the size of the board), then there must be only a certain number of possible games, therefore, any game has predictable elements. The same would apply to chess. Therefore, he concludes, a mathematical constant may be able to explain anything in the natural world. But just because there are a certain number of possible games doesn't mean that all moves are predictable - that has to do with probability and human awareness of the best moves to make. Also, I don't know how true it is that Hebrew is based on mathematics. The other half of the plot is that the main character is pursued by two separate parties: a group of people led by a woman who wants to predict the stock market, and a group of Hasidic Jews who want the 216-digit number because supposedly the true name of God, which was only uttered once and all record of it destroyed by time, is 216 digits long, and the word can be translated from the digit. The first party makes enough sense, I suppose, although if they actually thought the stock market was predictable makes them seem pretty stupid (it's obviously not based on mathematics alone). The second group is much less realistic. The Jews in this movie think that they can bring about a new age just by saying God's name? And how can it be translated from 216-digits? By that rationale, there can't be any letter in the Hebrew alphabet after the ninth (letters equivalent to H (10) or Z (26) couldn't be used because the number is 216 digits long and the word is 216 letters long). And the main character already says, "I'm sure you've already tried all possible combinations of 216 letters," which, if it would bring about the new age (or whatever it's supposed to do), I'm sure they would have tried it. It also seems to revolve more around the main character's headaches/seizures (which aren't really explained either). He never ends up in a hospital or mental institution, which, considering he has no apparent job to speak of, would make sense for him to be in. There's a little bit of flirtation with the neighbor next door, and he seems to fantasize about being with her, but any prospect of that is shot down, despite her come-ons. It's also difficult to tell what is real and what is imaginary, a deliberate attempt on Aronofsky's part. But it's jarring and it makes you think that the main character is delusional. So I came to think that he was imagining that people are spying on him, but in reality this woman got scores of people to follow him around and keep an eye on him. How much sense does that make? The cinematography is very good, although when he takes his painkillers, Aronofsky does the quick drug thing (see the pills in the hand, see him pop them in his mouth, drink water, etc. in the span of 2 seconds) that was used to a great extent in Requiem for a Dream. Pi is a good effort, but it falls apart if you think about it after the movie is over, and I don't like that when that happens. I must say, though, that the actor for the main character (Sean Gullette) is REALLY good in this movie. He really portrays the pseudo-psychotic Jewish mathematician very well. The musical score is good. Lastly, I should make it a point that the number Pi pretty much doesn't even figure into the movie. He explains it's the relationship between a circle's circumference and the radius/area, but he never clearly uses it for the 216-digit number or finds important patterns in it. Kind of a let down.

Hannibal (2001): 4.5/5

Great, great movie. I enjoyed it more than Silence of the Lambs and Red Dragon (although to be fair, I've seen SotL about a dozen times, and it just doesn't do anything for me). I was surprised to see that Ridley Scott directed this movie and that Julianne Moore played Clarice this time. She does a good job portraying the new Clarice, who after ten years has lost her innocent demeanor and is more courageous, serious, and just appears less threatened. When she says in the beginning, "I wasn't speaking to you. You'll know when I'm speaking to you because I'll look at you," the persona is very different than Jodie Foster's character, who was in training, meek, and had to put up with people coming on to her and she couldn't talk back to them. Here, she's grown up, but she's still very attractive and persistent, which Moore plays very well. Anthony Hopkins is still a very strong character as well.

The biggest shift in this story is the focus. Rather than in SotL and Red Dragon where the main character uses Lector as a source of information for capturing somebody else, here Lecter is the person they're trying to capture. I think this works better because he's a more terrifying antagonist than Buffalo Bill or the Tooth Fairy. Buffalo Bill is just a psychotic who wants to make a dress out of flesh, and the Tooth Fairy just has a back tattoo and has psycho-sexual issues with his body and with his grandmother. Lecter is a much more threatening character because he is sane. He is always in control but he's sporadic in whom he kills. Buffalo Bill chose to kill white women and the Tooth Fairy chose to kill families. Lecter makes his own selection, but his victims are chosen for their avarice, so everyone is potentially a target. All the characters Lecter kills can be traced to their avarice or their rudeness. But in SotL and Red Dragon, Lecter isn't properly the antagonist. In Hannibal, he starts out as being the bad guy, but slowly he becomes the central character and you don't want him to get caught. It seems that the only person for whom he doesn't have the utmost contempt is Clarice, whom he praises for her selflessness and sense of moral duty. At this point, though, we understand that Lecter is the same: in fact, he kills those who have wounded Clarice and hindered her progress.

One can imagine each of the main characters as a part of the brain. Clarice is the part of the brain that follows a strict moral law, who doesn't lash out when put in a corner, who always obeys the rules, and tries to bring immoral people to justice. Mason Verger (Gary Oldman) is the part of the brain that wants to hurt back those who have done harm to the subject, who want to revel in dealing back equal or greater pain that have been done to them. Justice Department official Paul Krendler (Ray Liotta) is the part of the mind that is focused on sex and treats people as objects for lust. Lecter is the part of the mind that simply wants those who do wrong to simply not exist anymore. In a sense, he is not so different from Mason Verger's character, but he never gets pleasure out of killing. He would phrase his work as: revealing in them their greatest potential, that is, as food. He knows that some people are good for nothing, so they might as well only be used for food. He has no qualms about killing, but he does follow a moral code. Both he and Clarice never act out of avarice, out of greed, or for self-gain. This is almost directly implied when he gives a lecture in Florence about Medieval and Renaissance conceptions of avarice, particularly in Dante. The Italian investigator is the first murder by Lecter, but the investigator allowed himself to be caught by his own greed for the reward of capturing Lecter; had he simply let the FBI know of his location in Florence, he would have saved himself. The same is true for the gypsy boy who Lecter kills and the Krendler character. In this way, Lecter is not really an antagonist at all, and we come to understand that he doesn't kill out of caprice, but to set things right in the world.

Some people might criticize the romantic undertones of the movie, but I thought they were quite apt. After all, in SotL he brushes his hand against hers and makes all kinds of other insinuations. Now, a comparison to SotL is inevitable, and that's what many critics say bring this movie down: it doesn't live up to SotL. But what are we comparing here? They're completely different stories. This movie builds on the knowledge from the first movie and gives insight into Lecter, who until now has really just been a barbaric killer. In SotL, there's the creepiness and scariness factor, but he's trying to escape from prison and acting under instinct to survive. There's not that much depth to his character there. Now, the conversations with Clarice are more memorable, and Ridley Scott can't get over this, as apparent in his frequent use of tape recordings from the first movie. There frankly is less psychological depth in this movie in the relationship with Clarice and Lecter, who in SotL he sort of tried to get into her head. In Hannibal, though, you have to do your own psychological investigation on the characters. There is depth in the relationship between Starling and Lecter, which doesn't find fruition in a true expression of love, but there is still a deep connection (maybe not even romantic, but on a more fundamental connection). SotL was a darker movie, it had a darker vibe, but this movie isn't really trying to be as dark because when it comes down to it, Lecter is not a sadistic or scary character. He saves Starling more than once and cuts off his own hand for her. He is, effectively, the protagonist. This can also be clearly be seen in the final scene when he speaks to the child like a father, or when after the credits roll, you hear Anthony Hopkins's voice says: "Ta-ta. H." One can't help but smile.

I know it sounds like I'm trying to defend this movie, which I kind of am. I think it's underrated and in being compared to SotL, which focuses on something completely different, the movie Hannibal hasn't been given its due. Granted, some special effects are pretty atrocious. Also, the whole Starling vs. the FBI is dry and predictable; there isn't a lot of substance there. One last point to make is the music. The music is spectacular. Hans Zimmer is at the top of his form in this movie. He even writes a beautiful operatic number. The music paints a picture of Lecter as having a real appreciation for and knowledge of fine arts. This makes him terrifying for two reasons: 1. His refined taste and knowledge makes him an efficient and decisive killer. 2. It makes you identify with him and simultaneously terrifies you of your identification of him. Unfortunately, there are now probably more people who know the music Dead Mau5 than J.S. Bach, so maybe the role he plays is becoming increasingly unidentifiable. But I think that making Hannibal a clearly fleshed out character with refined taste makes for a frightening, and yet humble and indeed sympathetic, character. And that's where I think this movie succeeds where SotL does not.

Arlington Road (1999) - very interesting plot. However, the film tries too hard to let the viewers feel that the main character could be insane or actually correct in his assumption about his new neighbors. Editing was mediocre and the director was simply not capable of pulling this twisting plot out. The only things that made the plot even believable (which it really wasn't) were the 2 excellent main characters Jeff Bridges and Tim Robbins (I love this guy!). I did enjoy the ending a lot though, as anything out of the norm is interesting to me. [3/5]

One Dark Night (1983) - From the director of Friday the 13th Part VI comes this low-budget 80s horror about the undead terrorizing teenage girls in a mausoleum. There's a little more to it than that but it's really not worth mentioning. Being There (1979)
Gardener leaving for the first time to see the real world after his master dies. But it's really a funny movie that reflects the gullibility of humans and how much we follow

One of the all-time great comedies. So many awkward, awkward moments. Peter Sellers was a mad genius.

I just had the displeasure of watching the new Total Recall. In a word, bland. Totally lacking the wit and verve of Verhoeven's version. Colin Farrell and Biel and Beckinsale are all very pretty to look at, and I'm a big fan of Bryan Cranston from "Breaking Bad" and was looking forward to his interpretation of Cohaagen, but he was just given nothing to work with. The CGI was also pretty. That's about it.

Oh, and Gregson-Williams's score was distractingly bad. A very lame riff on Zimmer's Inception.

Paranormal Activity 1, 2 & 3 [4.5 bashed skulls each]

I bought these mainly because of the good price (14.97 at Wal-Mart) and also because of the raving reviews that my fellow horror fans give them. Honestly I was expecting a Blair Witch style movie when I popped in the first disc. Boy was I surprised! The first quarter of the movie was a little like watching somebodies home movie but as the weirdness began to escalate I began feeling genuinely creeped-out which is an involuntary response that I don't often feel much anymore being so jaded by poor writing and and tired plots. It has also been quite sometime since I went on a sequel binge...popping in disc after disc as the hours passed by unnoticed. Another thing I enjoyed was the way each movie relieved a little more about the underlaying plot. I'm now looking forward to watching Paranormal Activity 4.

Last movie I saw in full......Dark Knight Rises.

Epic conclusion. But still not my favorite Batman film to be quite honest. I understand completely that Batman had to be vulnerable in order to sell Bane's threat to the city since he is Gotham's savior. But I felt they made him a tad bit too vulnerable. And too many people knew his identity. I hate it when superheros' identities are revealed. Not taking anything away from it though. It was an epic film that I definitely enjoyed a lot without question despite a few minor things that bothered me a bit. But it doesn't take away from the movie overall. Is it the best? That's open to interpretation and opinion. Is it one of the best? Oh Hell Yeah! One of the best super hero adaptations ever! Action, dialogue, music, top notch. Can't deny any of that.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Loved it. Don't know why critics didn't like it... I think it's just as good as the 3 Lord of the Rings movies. Can't wait for the next one!

I read the book and have been asking those who saw it how much of the book the film follows. Usually, film adaptations of books (or games) generally suck with a few exceptions. So don't wanna watch The Hobbit if it doesn't follow the book that well.

This could be why critics didn't like it. Can't say for sure as I haven't see it. Speaking for me though, when I see a movie based on a game I know of played, I hate it when it doesn't follow the game at all or does so very little. Same goes with films based on books. I felt Harry Potter did well here.
