While not the greatest I did enjoy it. Kept most of the fantasy elements out or ambiguous so The Odyssey would be kinda hard but I still would like to see Sean Bean in his own sword & sorcery movie.
2 other things; it's an R movie with gore and nudity but there was only 1 chopped off head and no penis or vag shots.

I was surprised and kinda disappointed it was only little over an hour and not the 8 hour run time of the original. But with fewer it watches much tighter so each segment seams a bit more memorable; so much so I'm having a hard time picking a favorite. Yeah, I felt pretty lost too the first time. And mainly that's why I prefer the 1st movie over the rest.

The Original Mad Max originally opened "A Few Years From Now..." in the theaters back in the 70's I think. So that's why newcomers could feel pretty lost, when you see 2.

But In the 1st one things were pretty fucked up, in the civilization part. Energy Resources got fucked up between 1 & 2. Why? Hell even I don't know, but that's not the point of the film I think. I believe it's mainly because, "We run out of Oil & nobody came up with a solution"

This whole "don't whack the Muppets" thing is ridiculous. I don't buy for one second that if they cut federal funding that shows like Sesame Street or Arthur won't survive. They're just going to have to work harder and smarter. If Dora the Explorer, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, Imagination Movers and umpteen other shows targeted at that age group can survive without federal funding, then there's no reason why the best PBS shows can't survive either. The emperor has no clothes. When funding was cut for Postcards from Buster, they found their own funding, made a second season, and put the whole show on DVD, all without federal funding.

"This program was made possible through the financial support of Viewers Like You." Time to step up, Viewers Like You! Time to stop raiding from the public coffer and let it be our choice! If they defund PBS and actually go through with these cuts, I will make a contribution.

Getting rid of federal funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting is something the Republicans have tried every time they've gained power. It's never worked before, I hope it works this time. It would be the best thing to happen because it would force them to end the stale mediocrity and actually compete in the free marketplace of ideas. And I'm not scared that they'd lose!

Buster was one show at a time when they didn't have to worry about the rest of the line up so much. This puts all the programing at greater risk and would PBS really pick to save every one of their children shows over the Nova stuff or Antiques Road Show? Donations only go so far and without federal add even if everyone gives who watches gives the top $500 dollar there will stiff be a great deal of costs and expenses which means cost cutting and downsizing.

The powers-that-be would like you to believe that if funding were cut, Sesame Street would go off the air. This is wrong.

"After Sesame Street's initial success, its producers began to think about its survival beyond its development and first season and decided to explore other funding sources. From the first season, they understood that the source of their funding, which they considered "seed" money, would need to be replaced.[41] The 1970s were marked by conflicts between the CTW and the federal government; in 1978, the U.S. Department of Education refused to deliver a $2 million check until the last day of CTW's fiscal year. As a result, the CTW decided to depend upon licensing arrangements with toy companies and other manufacturers, publishing, and international sales for their funding.

In 1998, the CTW accepted corporate sponsorship to raise funds for Sesame Street and other projects. For the first time, they aired short ads of indoor playground manufacturer Discovery Zone, their first corporate sponsor, to air before and after each episode. Consumer advocate Ralph Nader, who had previously appeared on Sesame Street, called for a boycott of the show, saying that the CTW was "exploiting impressionable children."

So Sesame Street isn't even on the air because of federal funding. Wake up!

Some programs may have to move to other networks. If they did, it wouldn't be the end of the world. Nor would it be the end of the world if some of the shows were canceled. Programs get canceled all the time. It's part of the rules of television. Even PBS shows get canceled. Fetch! was canceled, and that's despite federal funding.

Those that are saying it shouldn't be ended would like to put you into panic mode and have you believe that without federal funding, PBS is going to be some crippled hobble that can't possibly survive. I don't believe it for one second. I say again - the emperor has no clothes.

Angel Heart (1987) [4/5]

I totally spoiled this movie for myself by reading a little bit too much about it before seeing it. Think I'd seen too many movies with "plot twists" to have the ending surprise me (it did surprise me in a way though. Due to a certain "romance" that occurred before the end). I don't know, but the whole musician thing did not work for me either (not a bad-ass enough job I guess). I suppose part of it was also that the main character's personality made me not like him enough to really care what happened to him at the end. But I must say the story was very clever with some amazing acting towards the very end.

The Innocents (1961) [4.5/5]

A very subtle and atmospheric film that uses the viewers' imagination to disturb. It is one of the few films that I'd actively try to watch again and feel like my second viewing can enhance my understanding and appreciation of the story (this says a lot in my world). The ending is very unusual and quite devastating. There are some truly artistic and stunning visuals in this movie that stays with you. Highly recommended for people who enjoy subtleties.

Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete

3/4 or better, and massive improvement over what I recall seeing when watching the film on DVD. Much better structured - doesn't feel like two different films like the original did-- where you get about half plot and then suddenly it's just all action and it's like the plot just dies. Still can't help hearing "Got it memorized?" or "We don't have time for a Q+A session!" every time that Reno speaks, though. :D

Anyway, let me just say this - if there's anyone here that still hasn't seen Advent Children and still plans to someday, don't just walk, run away from the DVD version. If you don't have a device that's capable of playing Blu-ray, find someone who does and watch Advent Children Complete, but do not touch the original DVD version.

Based off a magazine character created by Robert E. Howard in 1928, this is a origin story for Solomon Kane. Body count of 37. :)

35 of which Liam Neeson is personally responsible for. He makes Jack Bauer look like the gentle giant with some of his interrogation tactics.

Fairly good. Supsense and action held up at a steady pace. A few "yeah right" moments and plot points but all in all, it held my attention.

Ghost Town (2oo8) 3 out of 5

Ricky Gervais can see dead people.

Not quit the yukfest I originally thought it would be, so I think that may have disappointed me at first. However by the second act I was captivated by Gervais' character. He brings a new flavor to the tired rom-com formula and makes it his own. I get the feeling some of the script was cut short but it got it's point across and had a satisfying conclusion.

The Sunset Limited (2011)

Directed by and starring Tommy Lee Jones, alongside Sammy L. Jackson, based upon Cormac McCarthy's (The Road, No Country For Old Men) play.

On the surface it's nothing but two men in a one room apartment debating their life beliefs for an hour and a half.

A cynical little debate of the qualities of life. While never taking sides it keeps you thinking and actually wondering which side you might actually take. Trapped in a single tightly jammed room, there is no room for grey areas with this debate.....only black and white. Where do you stand?

Emotionally drained by the end, I feel I might have to take this journey again just to gather up every thought and detail woven into the dialogue. It goes deep into what these men are thinking and sometimes a little too fast to be given time to think about what they've just said when they move onto a new argument.

Marco Beltrami's music is sparse yet cleverly stitched into the background only during brief moments signifying one man beginning to breakdown and lost the fight.

It's well acted, well written and beautifully paced.

A VERY independent comedy about a video store clerk who gets fired from his job for being too much of a movie nerd. He annoys the customers and other employees to no end with his useless knowledge of movie trivia babble and nitpicks.

The film has a few chuckles and if you're a movie nerd like myself you can probably relate to some of the things that the main character goes on about. Other than those few redeeming qualities it tends to drag after the first 30 minutes and falls into a dull predictability.

A charming, heartbreaking tale about an illusionist struggling to get by 1959, Paris. It's humorous, thoughtful and looks incredible. The attention to detail and the warmth of classical animation almost makes me want to watch it again right away. Had I seen this last year it would have made my top 10 list without a doubt.

....plus....there's a bunny. :)

Ghost in the Shell 2.0
Dir. Mamoru Oshii

It's a redux version of the first film. They added some CGI, tweaked the colours to make it more like GitS 2 (changed the greens to a kind of muddy bronze) and cleaned up the picture.

The remaster looked amazing, as good as GitS:SAC at times, the colour changes were okay after I got used to them but the CGI was pointless, it even replaced a key scene towards the end with a blurry mess.
The score was re-recorded and was subtly different, nothing major changed.
I was expecting it to be much worse. The original cut is also on the disc.

Ip Man
Dir. Wilson Yip

I think Donnie Yen is one of the finest film martial artists alive today but emotionally he is a block of wood in all his films. Ip Man is no different but the political aspect took centre stage. It was fantastic. This time the film itself was the star, not Donnie

It's the first film in a trilogy. :D Good news.

I hope Donnie continues to make films like this instead of crap like Dragon Tiger Gate and Flashppoint (both of which I bought without first seeing and quickly gave away  )

Disney's "Tangled"

Disney's take on "Rapunzel" only renamed "Tangled" to attract the boys too.

Mandy Moore is Mandy Moore.....

she even goes from blond to brunette too

Art does imitate life!!!!

Chuck is entertaining enough as the leading male. As usual the animals (the horse & chameleon) steal the show.

The animation is beautifully done by making the CG look like Disney's classical animated look. I even forgot it was CG.

The story and pacing? Ho-hum.

The songs? Typical Alan Menken Oscar bait.

All in all it was an average way to waste an afternoon.

Iron Man

I saw it in the theaters and enjoyed it quite a bit. It was fun, well performed and a fresh upbeat change as opposed to the dreary Batman films and not as silly as the Spidey flicks either.

So I thought I'd revisit it for fun. Bad idea.

It was boring. Uninspired and flat. Jeff Brides and Terrence Howard are terribly wasted talent here.

If not for Robert Downey Jr's fun performance I'd probably give it 1/2 a star.

Some films are best kept as good memories I guess. :(

It's satire and commentary but half the time I have no idea what point they were trying to make. The best way to describe it is as kinda Monty Python like or a live action cartoon. Xx - the biggest reason - Gilderoy Lockhart. I thought Kenneth Branagh's performance as him was brilliant. My only regret is that they weren't able to include more of his scenes and that they weren't able to have him back for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

Other reasons - I think that things such as the sequences with the flying car, the spiders and the basilisk all worked extremely well on-screen. Ron's performance and his facial expressions in particular with the spiders are priceless, perhaps because the actor that plays him really is extremely acrophobic in real-life, so it didn't take much for him to portray that fear. And then, the flying car sequence - there's a brilliant moment that isn't in the book but is absolutely hilarious in the film. They're flying along in the car and they decide that they need to find the train, so they fly lower down to the train tracks to try to locate it. So they're trundling along and suddenly you hear something coming up behind them. And again, their facial expressions - just priceless - as they realize, oh shit, the train is right behind them!

And certain other stylistic choices. For example, I agree that we probably really didn't need to see Lucius Malfoy and Arthur Weasley give an exhibition of dueling - the scene worked well as it was in the movie, with Malfoy simply being sinister instead brawling with fisticuffs.

I watched one I haven't seen in over 20 years.

Clive Barker's "Night Breed".

Did it hold up well? Depends on what you thought of it originally, I suppose.

It's deeply flawed and rushed in many moments but it's still a great roller coaster of a ride if you like monsters.

I love monsters so I had no problem with the many, many flaws.

When this movie came out I felt I could really relate to it's themes. The whole "freaks ostracized and hated by society" seemed to be a favorite of mine back then. It was around this time my favorite movies dealt with the same themes. Edward Scissorhands, Darkman, Batman Returns and of course, Night Breed. There's another similarity these films all share but I'll let you figure it out.

The creature effects are astounding even till this very day, however some of the other effects are quite hokey and distracting . The sets are beautifully put together and inviting. I love Midian and would love to visit one day. :D

Perhaps it's because I am a Clive Barker fanboy that I find myself so enthusiastic about a film that really isn't that great. But like any fanboy, I tend to ignore the flaws and make believe it's actually a work of art. I understand about 45 minutes were cut from the film and have been restored for independent screenings but it has yet to see a DVD/Blu-ray release. :( I'm hoping the extra 45 minutes will fix a lot of the poorly rushed scenes.

Director David Cronenberg's performance as the cold psychotherapist is delightfully sadistic and chilling. ....and why does Craig Sheffer look so much like David Boreanaz?

A scattered review, I know.

It's quite obvious Nightbreed was a passion project for Barker but something went wrong along the way and it just never really had the heart I think it was meant to portray.

In the end, Night Breed brought me back to my younger days when imagination was my greatest strength. What a great way to revisit that feeling...so nostalgic. :)

I'll be nice and give it 3 out of 5 stars

Stargate (1994)

Directed & co-written by Roland Emmerich of "2012" and "Independence Day" fame, starring James Spader and Kurt Russell.

I haven't seen this film since it was playing in theaters and never really watched the TV series as well (however it's been recommended to me on a few occasions), however I do remember kind of enjoying it.

After a rewatch, I did enjoy it to a certain extent. The first 2 acts were well paced, although I was distracted by some miscasting, some hokey dialogue and far too obvious foreshadowing techniques but the interesting idea and setting allowed me to dismiss the flaws.
It was until the 3 and final act that I found myself bored. It completely fell into the cliche-riddled Emmerich we've all grown to know over the past 15 years or so.

Had they shaved off 15 minutes and many pointless moments, it might have earned just a little more respect.

All in all, a fun, mindless ride until you hit the bumps.

I started watching Stargate SG1 (Stargate-1?) but it got kinda boring. It might get better due to the fact that there was an episode way late about the stargate project going public and a director wanting to make a movie based off the missions which leads the crew to imagine themselves in various parodies of the show from star trek, to romance, to animated, to a thunderbirds team America world police show.

Following in CM's footsteps :

SCRE4M

Director Wes Craven & 'Dawson's Creek' writer Kevin Williamson return to the Scream franchise after 12 years. Also returning are stars Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox & David Arquette. Throw in a bunch of fresh faces from TV's Heroes, 90210, Jericho, Community and one of the Culkin brothers and you've got a whole new cast to 'slice n' dice'.

Fortunately, Williamson returns to his 'baby' after 'The Ring' writer Ehren Kruger butchered the series with his "Scooby-Doo"-esque script for the 3rd installment. Sadly, it doesn't live up to the first 2 films and almost falls flat on it's face with a tired formula. While the trailers and commercials promise a "new decade, new rules" change, it doesn't really use that to it's advantage and comes off as more a rehash of the films we've already grown tired of 10 years ago.

Williamson & Craven could have had a lot of sick fun with the updates in technology we've had since the last film but instead tease us a little with the concept but never really put it to good use and you wonder why they even brought it up in the first place. They do however make use of the 'torture porn' films made recently and have some gruesome scenes we haven't really seen before. The new 'Ghostface' doesn't run away after his kill anymore...he stays and watches.

Many scenes seemed too rushed and instead of investing some time in them, we're left not really giving a shit. In a rare occurrence, this film could have benefited with an extra 5 or 7 minutes tagged onto it's running time to flesh out some scenes and characters a bit more.

All in all, it does have some great dialogue from the 'film geek' characters and the body count is the biggest the series has seen so far but it just doesn't live up to the hype or wait 'Scream' fans have been waiting for.

I was trying to see it objectively for the benefit of others, to show all sides rather than just saying how great I thought it was. It was slow and plodding but I was totally engaged by it, I don't know if other people would be (?). Stylistically it was amazing. It had a kind of dreamy road movie vibe, with a very muted and unusual colour pallate. The characters were well realised and even though I wouldn't want either of them as a friend irl I can appreciate their performance in the film. It was both heart-warming and full of sadness.
It was Vincent Gallo's baby; he wrote it, directed it, and scored much of it. A lot of writer/director projects have a little something special that appeals to me.

Love that film.

I wasn't allowed to watch that when I was younger. Probably the part with Phoebe Kates' learning there is no Santa because her father died in the chimney.
Spielberg got soft, he produced that along with Land Before Time & American Tale but 1 scene with shotguns is too terrorizing for the kiddies.

With Shrek was great and is still one of their best works and while the 3 sequels aren't as good they still have some funny stuff and heart to them even they feel auto pilot at some points.

Kung Fu Panda, Megamind, & How to Train Your Dragon are super good and going by the mandatory Pixar/Dreamworks comparison I'd say I liked them better than cars and Bugs Life. Didn't Dreamworks also do the Aarman movies? Do we count those as dreamworks or is that like disney putting "disney presents" on all of Myazaki's movies?

I haven't seen Kung Fu Panda; I couldn't get into it. As for How to Train Your Dragon, I have read overwhelming praise for it. I started to watch it, but I couldn't get into it. As I understand it, the main character is supposed to be a kid, but his voice sounds like an adult to me. That's a dissonance for me - I just can't deal with it when the character is supposed to be a kid, but they have a voice that sounds like an adult.

The Last Exorcism
Dir. Daniel Stamm

A faux documentary style horror film. It sets up a scenario and then fails to deliver any real chills.
It brings in elements that couldn't possibly be in the docu format and the transition is really jarring.
The girl (Ashley Bell) that is 'possessed' gave a fantastic performance. It was her that kept me watching.

Blood Into Wine (2010)

A documentary following the technique and passion, TOOL frontman Maynard James Keenan and business partner, Eric Glomski, put into their wine-making business.
While it is a legitimate documentary, it has it's fair share of "LOL" moments without sacrificing the educational and interesting element of the documented topic.
It's got some cameos from Breaking Bad & Mr. Show's Bob Odenkirk, comedian Patton Oswalt, Primus drummer Tim Alexander and Milla Jovovich.
You don't have to be a TOOL fan to enjoy this, as it has absolutely nothing to do with the music and solely about the passion of winemaking.

I liked it a lot.

My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done (2009)

A rather odd little film directed by Werner Herzog and produced by David Lynch.
It stars Revolutionary Road & Boardwalk Empire’s Michael Shannon as a mentally unstable grown man named Brad, who murders the mother he still lives with. He holes up in his house and with two “hostages”, in an inane attempt to avoid the army of police officers surrounding his house.
The film takes place after the murder and goes back and forth between the present with Brad in a hostage situation, going back to several flashback scenes to tell the tale leading up the mother’s murder.
Grace Zabriskie,Willem Dafoe, Chloe Sevigny, Udo Kier and Brad Dourif round out the rest of the bizarre cast.
With such a talented cast you would think it’d be at least entertaining enough to watch the performances and in a way it is. Shannon is wonderfully subtle considering the type of character he had to play . Brad Dourif, in his brief appearances, is always fun to watch. That’s it though. The rest of the actors add nothing to the characters or dialogue.
The movie has Lynch washed all over it with absurd conversations and long stretches of awkward silence, only to snap into Herzog style at other times with a completely different brand of in your face weird. Like actors all freezing spot, as if it’s a snapshot memory in Brad’s mind. This creates an uneven balance in the flow of the narrative, forcing the film to suffer greatly.
With a short running time of only an hour and a half, you would have figure that’d be okay, however I found there’s so many stretches of ‘who cares?’, it probably would have a much more effective short film cut in half that time.

Mongol: The Rise of Genghis Khan. 5/5

It's a very quite, slow, and cold feeling movie. A lot of stuff on just the day to day life of a mongol. Being about the wonder years of Genghis Khan most of the battles are smaller in scale and don't go in forever but are satisfying with the exception of no parts getting chopped off. The blood spray was very satisfactory. The cast was great and looking at imbd most of them have only ever appeared in this film so they were most likely native Mongolians who got rounded up and filmed on location. The director is Russian but from what I saw took great care in depicting a culture not his own as accurately as possible.

I liked this even more than To's other great works. The opening scene is fantastic. The ending is great. Everything in between is solid. I saw PotC Stranger Tides over the weekend. It was ok but I still don't think the writers know how to write women into their scripts. The music was very overbearing too, may have just been the speaker setup though.

And dear goodness why so much bad light transitioning?! T____T The night scenes needed to be just a little brighter........... and after you have me stare at the screen after a half hour of dark scenes don't slap me in the face with daylight with no transition. That friggin' hurt.

Tsui Hark's Vampire Hunters (aka. The Era of Vampires)
Dir. Wellson Chin

Written & Produced by Hark but not directed by him, the cover fooled me into thinking it was.
Similar in tone to Hark's own A Chinese Ghost Story but not quite as good. Although Wellson Chin did the action scenes well it didn't have the frenetic pace that Hark's own films do (maybe that's more the fault of the editors).

Zombies, crazy flying vampires and Kung Fu, and some very poor CGI. It'll appeal to fans of the genre.

IMDB says it's a remake of The Legend of Seven Golden Vampires . I didn't notice that while watching :erm: but thinking of it now, I can see the similarities.

EVERYTHING IS ILLUMINATED (directed by Liev Schreiber)

Actor Liev Schreiber’s directorial debut (and sadly his only film so far) is a touching, intimate little tale that is bittersweet, sad and funny all at the same time. It was written for the screen by Schreiber and adapted from Jonathan Safran Foer’s 2002 novel.
It follows Elijah Wood’s Jewish-American character travels through the Ukraine in search of a woman his grandfather knew during the Nazi invasion.
Gypsy punk band Gogol Bordello’s frontman, Eugene Htz steals the show, as Wood’s flamboyant tour guide, who is joined by his non-English speaking cranky grandfather and their “seeing eye-bitch” dog.
I laughed quite a bit, although not rolling on the floor laughter. It’s more of a familiar thoughtful laughter, not much different from the type of humor we were graced with in Little Miss Sunshine.
And with the laughter came the tears near the end of the film. I knew it was coming, but for some reason it still took me off guard.
All in all, a feel good film that leaves a smile on your face and the urge to travel and meet new people to shake off this jaded, boring personality we seem to dress in all too often.

4 out of 5.

WINTER’S BONE (directed by Debra Granik)
A dreary adaptation of the novel by “country noir” author Daniel Woodrell.
It follows the story of a teenage girl, Ree (brilliantly played by Jennifer Lawrence) who, after the mysterious disappearance of her useless father, has to take care of her siblings and catatonic mother in a poor rural, drug-addled area of Missouri. Their house is in danger of being taken away and nobody (even family members are ready to help them out).
A quiet little thriller that doesn’t resort to car chases or much violence but still manages to flourish with highly effective intensity and dread. Deadwood’s John Hawkes turns in a fantastic performance as well. Twin Peaks fans, keep an eye for an almost recognizable cameo from Sheryl Lee.
It captures the feeling of hopelessness, community and depression with perfection without trying to be flashy or overly stylish.
I don’t want to give too much away and will just highly recommend this film.

4 out of 5

THE ADJUSTMENT BUREAU (directed by George Nolfi)
What could have been a potentially wonderful sci-fi romance, kind of based on a short story by sci-fi master, Philip K. Dick, starring Matt Damon and Emily Blunt.
A ballerina and a politician meet and it’s love at first sight. They feel as if they are soul mates but due to mysterious circumstances they are constantly being split apart.
The film explores the question of free will and the existence of higher beings moving amongst us.
It could of easily gone into some very interesting and/or unsettling roads less traveled, but for some reason it plays it way too safe and audience friendly, resulting in a lukewarm execution with an ending that is so fast you wonder if you missed something.
There’s some brilliant ideas and wonderful performances but the script is just so bland you feel cheated.
Oh well. Cheap light sci-fi fare for a Sunday afternoon, if you will.

Hitcher in the Dark (1989) - Sleazy thriller from Umberto Lenzi about a psycho who travels cross country in his camper picking up young, unsuspecting hitchhikers to abuse and murder. Despite the title, most of the film takes place during the daytime. Even the poster art is of a woman's frame hitchhiking on a dark wet road. Not too many thrills and a serious lack of gore for one of Lenzi's films. The acting, poor and the ending even worse, though according to an interview with the director, it was changed by the producers. Even so, it would not have saved this boring movie. 2 out of 5.

The Comedians of Comedy (2005) - Nice little documentary detailing a comedy tour made up of Patton Oswalt, Brian Posehn, Maria Bamford, and Zack Galifianakis. On their travels we see snippets of their stand-up as well as their day-to-day hijinks as they experiment with their comedy. Hilarious if a fan of any of these comics. 4 out of 5.

Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa (2008) - The first one was okay but this one I find lackluster as I tire of the characters, especially Sacha Baron Cohen's Julien. The music gets in the way of the comedy as songs enter the action uninvited. Like most sequels, it contains more than the original as the characters find themselves surrounded by fields of fellow critters. Though I did enjoy Alec Baldwin's performance as Makunga. 2 out of 5.

Collateral (2004) - A good simple story without too many details as director Michael Mann wanted it, according to his commentary. I'm not a big fan of either main actors but Cruise is intriguing as the existentialist hitman Vincent. The story ends clean, leaving the viewer wanting more which I enjoyed. Still not sure of the significance of Jason Statham in the opening airport scene. The director doesn't even mention him in the commentary, as if he were simply an extra with an interesting accent. 3 out of 5.

Death Note
Dir. Shūsuke Kaneko

I haven't read the manga so I was comparing the film's story to the anime which was itself an adaptation. Based on that, I found the film lacking, not just in the amount of time it had to develop characters etc but in direction, and originality. Ryuk was very two dimensional. Light and L were okay, if a little older than I'd imagined they would be.

I've part 2 still to watch so maybe the films work better as a whole? I'm wondering how far they take it compared to the anime.

Hopefully part 2 will be better, Light V's L and with Misa doing her nutty bunny boiler gf thing it has the potential to be full of tension. :D

THE SECRET ADVENTURES OF TOM THUMB (1993)

Weird. Weird. …and a little more weird.
Then throw in a couple of truckloads of creativity and amazing visuals and you have one hour of pure bliss.
Using traditional stop-motion puppets mixed with stop-motion live actors (pixilation) it tells the story of a weird little feller named Tom Thumb and his adventures through a bizarre world, reminiscent of something seen in German Expressionism and a Brothers Quay short.
While it is visually brilliant, this little UK film also manages to tell a wonderful tale with so much heart and delicacy while only using next to no dialogue.
Highly recommended.

TRANSFORMERS : DARK OF THE MOON (2011)

I walked out of theater before the halfway point.

I’ve never done that before.

‘Nuff said.

MARTYRS (2008)

Originating from France and directed by Pascal Laugier, who made the impressive action/fantasy period piece “Brotherhood Of The Wolf” a few years earlier.
This "lovely" example of absolute horror is a revenge tale at heart and the other half a mystery of sorts as it keeps you guessing just what the hell is going on.
I won’t tell you anything about it, to prevent any spoilage but I can tell you the first time I saw it I wondered why I was watching this gruesomely violent film that seemed to have no boundaries. After it was done, I was satisfied with what I had seen and experienced and made a note to watch it again sooner than later.
Beneath the extreme gore and violence, lay a compelling, albeit disturbing, tale that begged to be told.
It’s filled with enough twists and turns to keep you guessing and preventing you from turning it off, just to see how it eventually unfolds.
With the second viewing it was just as good if not better, because the initial shock has worn off and I was given the chance to pay closer attention to the emotional story details and spellbinding performances by the two female leads4 out of 5

That same night I indulged in some more French horror with:

 L'INTERIEUR (INSIDE) (2007)

A story about a pregnant woman who goes into a state of extreme depression after a bad car accident that’s left her widowed. Her home is invaded by a brutal stranger, while she is alone on Christmas Eve and things spiral out of control in the sickest of fashions.
This is just plain gruesome and overly disturbing. While I was sickly enthralled with it the first time, due to being kept on the edge of my seat, the second time around the suspense was gone and all I was left with was senseless violence.
The performances are absolutely wonderful and the setting is suffocatingly astounding, but the core story lacks anything to noteworthy and the characters aren’t really all that sympathetic.
Had it spent just a little more time with the protagonist before her accident and depression, I might have been inclined to feel more for her.
One scene near the beginning is quite frankly one of THE most frightening things I’ve ever seen in a film and makes me think twice about being alone.
Apart from all that, it does nothing for me but disgusts. And disgust it does well. The finale is almost too much to handle. Bring a barf bag or six and hide your scissors.
A weak 3 out of 5

I SAW THE DEVIL (2010)

A brilliantly violent South Korean revenge flick that’s perfected the ‘game of cat & mouse’ thriller.
Directed by Kim Ji-woon, who brought us the wonderful “A Tale Of Two Sisters” and “A Bittersweet Life”.
Starring Ji-woon’s fresh-faced regular, Lee Byung-hun from “The Good, The Bad & The Weird” and the brilliant Choi Min-sik of “Oldboy” fame.
It follows the story of a secret agent who is on the hunt of the man who brutally butchered his fiance. On the way his own morals and character changes into something he probably didn’t know he was capable of.
It’s brutally unforgiving and completely disgusting but you just can’t hjelp but be completely enthralled with the wonderful storytelling, set-pieces and Choi Min-sik’s delightfully sadistic performance.
While it does run a little long in a few spots and could use about 10 minutes of nothing cut, it doesn’t cease to hypnotize the viewer.
I could watch it again really soon, if not just for the performances and different settings.
If you can stomach the violence, I would highly recommend this one.

The Tenant (7.5/10) - very slow in the beginning but somehow managed to not lose my attention. The last half hour was excellent. I was in awe with what happened at the very end of the movie - it was what I expected, but the intensity of it was impressive.

The Polanski film of course. I loved how everyone insisted on the main character drinking, eating, and smoking what Simone Choule used to. Will never feel the same again when someone offers me Marlboro.
