I don't plan on watching The Hobbit till it comes out on dvd. I read the book senior year of high school and while I know the gist of what happens, the details are pretty vague in my memory so I doubt it will bother me if it doesn't follow the book too closely.
There are a lot of book-based films which I still enjoy even if they don't follow the book to a T, like Hitchhiker's Guide. It's too bad The Restaurant at the End of the Universe didn't get made.

Satan Bug, The (1965)
Lee Barrett was until recently a security officer at Station 3, a top secret government laboratory. He was fired for insubordination but is called back to duty by General Williams when biological warfare agents are stolen from the facility.
Of particular concern is the Satan Bug, a new and particularly virulent bacteriological weapon that could, if released, destroy all of mankind in a few weeks or months. The thief threatens to release the Satan Bug in a public place and Barrett races against time to stop him.

I read the book and have been asking those who saw it how much of the book the film follows. Usually, film adaptations of books (or games) generally suck with a few exceptions. So don't wanna watch The Hobbit if it doesn't follow the book that well.
This could be why critics didn't like it. Can't say for sure as I haven't see it. Speaking for me though, when I see a movie based on a game I know of played, I hate it when it doesn't follow the game at all or does so very little. Same goes with films based on books. I felt Harry Potter did well here.
I never read the book so I can't say if it follows the book or not. Critics didn't like it because they said it had a high frame rate or something.

The Brood (1979) - The trailer oversells it, but there's still everything you would expect from a Cronenberg film here. It's provocative, intellectual, shocking, strange, and original. Some great performances as well, especially from Samantha Eggar. I first heard of the film because of the ending and it does not disappoint. Though I wish there had been more physiological focus on the brood. Not particularly scary as the trailer would lead you to believe but there are definitely images which will haunt you. 3 out of 5.

I don't know what that has to do with the movie itself. I guess raters each have their own criteria for ratings and I get that. But if that high frame rate was the issue, I'd say something along the lines of like (f I liked the movie) movie was good but downside was high frame rate. The fram rate is how the movie is presented or shown, isn't it? Maybe it was that particular theater that they saw it at that was the cause of partly the cause. Anyway, their ratings has to/should be based on more than just that IMO.
Anyway, thanks for the reply. I'll know what to expect if I end up seeing it.

Yeah. It was because it was shown on a digital projector instead of an old fashioned reel one, but I agree it's not really a valid reason to criticize a movie. I saw it on a digital one and I thought it looked fine.

Ok then. let me ask you is it worth watching? Don't wanna spend the time and money if I'm gonna get a no lol. I loved the LOTR trilogy especially the extended verisons which I have on blu ray if it helps as Hobbits (which are in a way, a prequel to LOTR) are related to it since they're part of the same universe and written by the same author.
According to wikipedia, Hobbit acts as a prequel to Peter Jackson's (who directed Hobbit) LOTR film trilogy.
Hobbit is also being planned to be released as a film trilogy with The Desolation of Smaug and There and Back Again, due for theatrical release in 2013 and 2014, respectively.
If there are any deleted or alternate scenes, beginnings or endings, (which usually all films have despite most movies not having them included as extras on DVD/blu ray releases) or extended versions, hope they'll be out on blu ray.

It is a prequel, it takes place 60 years before Lord of the Rings. It has some of the same actors from Lord of the Rings also. If you really love the trilogy then it is definitely worth watching. I'm sure they would do a blu-ray trilogy pack for the Hobbit also which has extended versions. It did take a little bit to get going but it was really good nonetheless.

Bound (1996) - The Wachowski Brothers deliver some very creative cinematography but the story was lacking for my taste. Tilly and Gershon's cinematic heat is the best thing about the film. Though I wish Gershon's Corky had been included a bit more. Instead she had her hands tied a bit too long. 2 out of 5.

The Hobbit: An unexpected journey
I loved it, I think it follows the book more than, say, Fellowship of the Ring did (which was a good thing.. I doubt even Peter Jackson could make the Tom Bombadil timesink entertaining)
Critics hate it because they don't like it when films don't cater to the lowest common denominatior i.e. when people who read *GASP* get elements of the film better than those who didn't read the source material. I think it's a better film than Fellowship was, and I've always thought Bilbo > Frodo as a main character.

The Dead Zone (1983) - A great performance for Walken and a strong supporting cast, though Martin Sheen overacts a bit. Despite being directed by Cronenberg, the original material really takes over for the most part. The thought-provoking dilemma which the movie poses is the most interesting component. 3 out of 5.

The problem with 3rd movies in a series that the cast and crew always have is following the first two or making it better. The first is usually the best. Second's usually good. But by the third, a good portion of those who liked the first two are ready to move on to something else so they have to really come up with something to keep them interested. But since a lot has been done in the first two, it makes coming up with stuff for the third difficult. Many have failed at pulling this off successfully (Sam Raimi's Spiderman, BTTF 3, TMNT 3). But Nolan's one of a very select few who succeeded as his Batman trilogy is one of THE BEST trilogies in movie history. T2 was so good, it spawned a sequel. T3 is the last great entry in the series (so far.) Fast and Furious is still doing. Sixth film set to be released on that series is doing very well. Hell, often times even the sequels are so bad (Batman and Robin, MK: Annihilation) they don't bother making a third. And other times, they're too stupid to see that the sequel sucked (Crow: City Of Angels) and end up making a third which is even worse (Crow: Salvation) I do believe The Crow series would be better than it is (except for the first one) if Brandon Lee was in the others, which he was signed on to do so.
Not making excuses. Just stating why I feel third's aren't usually as good as the first two.
Last move I saw....The Mask. To this day, one of Carrey's best! No onto Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, his VERY best!

Alien (1979). I was sure I'd caught the last half a number of years ago, but that must've been Aliens or another one of its sequels. Still, even though I hadn't seen this before, I wasn't overly engrossed. It did an admirable job of making its characters seem like real people who were aboard the Nostromo to do real work, but, outside of Ripley, they really weren't particularly sympathetic or exciting. That part's kind of important in this type of thriller. The movie also showed its age in a way that was almost shocking to me. I thought I didn't care whether a movie was 5, 15 or 50 years old, so I was surprised when I could barely contain my laughter at some of the effects. Guess I waited too long to catch up with the classics. :(

Red Cliff (2008)
Red Cliff is a Chinese epic war film based on the Battle of Red Cliffs (208209 AD) and events during the end of the Han Dynasty and immediately prior to the Three Kingdoms period in ancient China. The film was directed by John Woo, and starred Tony Leung, Takeshi Kaneshiro, Zhang Fengyi, Chang Chen, Hu Jun, Lin Chi-ling and Zhao Wei.
Sadly, it's only the western version I have... the Chinese version is over 4 hours in length and has a lot more content leading up to the fateful battle at Red Cliff, between the Remnants of the Han Dynasty and the forces of Wei, against the Kingdoms of Shu and Wu... which caused Wei's halt in their expansive desires. Based off of the novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms by Luo Guanzhong, it's a brilliant war epic, one which is also full of brilliantly choreographed battle scenes on large scale. 5 out of 5.

High and Low and Stray Dog. Both are Kurosawa thrillers set in post-war Japan. I liked High and Low better, as it seemed that Stray Dog didn't really know what it wanted to be (Kurosawa himself later admitted that he was young when he directed it and would have done it differently). I'll admit that I didn't really know what the overall message of Stray Dog was until after the movie was over when I read the commentary. Now I feel like I need to see it again so I can make the connection. Anyway, both are really good commentaries on society and individuals--I think High and Low is a bit more successful and has a stronger and more immediate impact, but both are worth watching.

It was nice to have a prequel. I'm all into seeing how things came to be. So didn't hate Lycans. Just didn't like it as much as the other movies. Not cause Kate wasn't in it. But because something about it didn't strike me as much as the others. I guess I felt they could've done a bit more even though it probably did what it needed to. Or maybe it's because they went from the first movie, to a sequel, then a prequel. Kinda ruins the flow of things or slows things down. Prequels should have been first. Or at the very least, second.

A sequel for the Chow Mo-wan character from In the Mood for Love (2000).
I thought it was just average but I can see how someone would argue otherwise. I loved the train moments.
Zhang Ziyi was a piss-poor replacement for Maggie Cheung, which was kind of the point but it didn't make her any less irritating.
Faye Wong was surprisingly good; in fact, besides Kar-wai's camera movements, she and Tony were what kept me watching.
I'd have liked more of the Gong Li character.
R.E.D. (Willis, Freeman, Mirren....)
There's a sequel on the way.

Red Lights (2012) - Cillian Murphy delivers a fine performance as a smart, energetic professional skeptic along with a decent cast including Sigourney Weaver, Robert Deniro, and Elizabeth Olsen.
Weaver is the best of these three while Olsen's character is completely useless. Imagine the movie without her and you won't miss a thing. Deniro feels a little out of place though. The dialogue is overly technical and delivered too quickly, leaving the viewer behind. 2.5 out of 5.

Just finished watching Resident Evil Retribution and while it was nice to see a character from the original RE appear, I felt the movie was rather... flat and bland. You could tell the influences from other movies like Aliens, Blade Runner and even Inception...
While movies based off of games are typically all show and no real substance (imo), it shows with this installment of the series. With talk of a sixth (and possible last foray of Alice) movie, I wouldn't mind seeing Claire and Chris Redfield return alongside the surviving cast of this one... and maybe bring in Rebecca Chambers and David Trapp (From Resident Evil: Caliban Cove) into it.

If something was filmed 4:3 then I'd definitely watch it 4:3. I hate when people stretch it to fit their TV.
Likewise, if it was filmed 1.85:1, I think it should be watched 1.85. You'll only get the black bars if it's wider than 1.85. (The next most popular is 2.35:1)
I love the black bars. It frames the image, and keeps the ratio intact.

True... I'm definitely not that picky that I zoom in. That's just goofy, then it cuts the sides off and looks too fuzzy. It kinda bothered me especially on smaller tvs but I have a 42" now so I'm ok with it now. I don't know why, I just prefer full screen over wide... guess I'm wierd like that.

To All a Good Night (1980) - Directed by David Hess ("star" of The Last House on the Left (1972)), this slasher involves a group of sorority girls (and a few guys) who are stalked by a murderous Santa Claus. Definitely the very worst lighting I have ever witnessed and just about the most predictable whodunnit ever. 1 out of 5
Hide and Go Shriek (1988) - Most known for his future producer credits on such shows as Angel, Sons of Anarchy and The Walking Dead, Skip Schoolnik directs this shitcan about a group of horny friends locked in a furniture store warehouse overnight with a crossdressing psychopath. The Wicker Man (1973) - the story of a police officer from mainland Scotland ending up in a remote island to investigate the disappearance of a young girl. I wouldn't say this movie is for everyone as I myself almost stopped watching after seeing an excess protrayal of sex and nudity within the first 30 min [in a 70's film??!! ]. What kept me watching, however, was how the film made it clear that their pagan and "unorthodoxed" ways were very much just part of their beliefs and everyday lives. I found this film to be strangely philosophical in that it made me realize that if I had lived on such an island and taught this way I would've very well have become like the residents. Inland Empire (2006)
Actress Susan Blue is preparing for one her biggest roles yet, however the underlining catch about the film is that it is a remake of a film that never got finished. It's claimed to be cursed after an incident involving the two leads being killed. Susan, during the film shoots, starts to fall for a fellow actor, but as she does she slowly adopts the personality of her character and her life turns surreal and nightmarish.
Probably one of the more confusing Lynch films I've encountered. All sorts of odd scenes that seem pop up randomly like a jack in the box, containing no horrifying clown to push you away, but bizarre and outlandish moments that reel you in.
Though it is 3 hours long (plus another hour and a half if you watch "More Things To Come" which is part of the movie), the film isn't for everyone. I'll admit if I didn't know any better this might have been considered boring, but thankfully I saw beyond some of the stagnent parts and was able to take in the experience as a whole. 3(and a half)/5

Inglorious Basterds
A group of jewish american soldiers led by Aldo 'Apache' Raine, sneak into German occupied France slaying Nazis (and removing their scalps) in hopes that if they don't win the war, they will win the psychological war. Along the ride is a vast array of characters, eccentric and peculiar, such as SS Colonel Hans Landa, the quiet but stern Shosanna, the brilliant actress Bridget von Hammersmark, and many more. It is certainly well worth watching with a great cast, acting, and cinematography. It is a war movie with showing off the war, although it isn't without it's gruesome moments, like any Tarantino film.

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me
This was Lynch being Lynch in the Twin Peaks world. Though it had it's moments, I would have preferred a continuation of the series rather than a prequel, which would have been tough to tackle seeing as there are many characters in that show that didn't make the cut. We didn't need to know Laura's story. We already knew it from the mouths of the characters in the series. That's what made it good. 2/5; cool ideas, but...it just wasn't necessary.

The acting is the absolute worst thing about the film though this could partly be blamed on the dubbing. Characters do very stupid things and pointlessly scream way too much. There's little creep factor and a few scenes of gore. Nowhere near one of Lenzi's best. 1 out of 5.

Clockwise (1986)
Dir. Christopher Morahan
British comedy starring John Cleese. He has a Basil Fawlty meltdown over the course of the movie.

Dead Creatures (2001) - Indie "zombie" flick trying to be smart and different but just ends up slow and pointless. A group of women contract a disease which makes them slowly rot while they crave human flesh, but they are not physically dead. Imagine the Lifetime network producing a zombie movie and this is would be the product. 1 out of 5.
Deadly Spawn (1983) - A nice suburban sci-fi film about teethy alien insects spawning in a quiet wooded neighborhood. Starts out fast with a number of "meaty" deaths. The gore sfx are great for its time and small budget. 3.5 out of 5.

Well its actually movies for me. It was a Will Smith marathon in the following order:
Hancock
Seven Pounds
Pursuit Of Happyness
I Am Legend
I, Robot
MIB 1-3
Since I was gonna watch MIB 3 again, felt I should just have A Will Smith marathon cause I haven't seen the others in so long. It was fun watching it in this order. No I feel like I should do more marathons.

The Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia - If the awkward title tells you anything it's that this "sequel" doesn't live up to the first A Haunting - based film. The problem with these "based on a true story" movies is that there is rarely any sort of resolution in real life. Usually there's a haunting and the family eventually moves without any explanation of the events. When Hollywood frames a story around this it's usually crap, and this is no exception.
The acting is decent (especially from the little girl) and it's shot well enough despite the absolute shit ton of jump scares, quick cuts, and general cheap editing tricks. I didn't have too much of a problem with it till the 1 hour mark where it really started to drag. Go watch the original A Haunting in Georgia tv special and call it day. 1.5 out of 5.

I'd go above good with The Crow. Most movies based on a comic aren't remembered the way The Crow is. Brandon Lee's portrayal is epic. Had he been alive to be in the sequels, his performance would've made them better then they actually were and if he didn't agree with the story, I believe he'd speak his mind about it and put some input himself. He was supposed to do them, but since he died.......unfortunately, he could not.

Oblivion
I went to the cinema today, and i will do so next friday as well (for Star Trek)
I liked Oblivion.
I think the ending is Hollywood-wanted, a different ending would have made sense as well, but I liked the movie.

Tucker & Dale vs Evil - A great play or flip of the cannibalistic hillbilly slasher genre where a group of college kids mistake two rednecks for psychotic killers. The premise is funny enough but it wouldn't have been so hilarious if not for the two leads comedic timing and overall chemistry. The story gets a little murky towards the end but it's still a lot of fun for the most part. 3.5 out of 5.

The Hunger Games - I think I enjoyed the first half of the film more with the sci-fi/alternate history elements than the actual games. I was pleasantly surprised by certain casting choices like Woody Harrelson, Donald Sutherland, and Elizabeth Banks since I knew little about the film to begin with. It was decent but hardly moving. And even after watching it I still have no interest in reading the books. 3 out of 5.

I wasn't referring to any video game. I was referring to the latter half of the film where the Hunger game took place. "Tournament of death" would probably be more apropos.

Death Becomes Her (1992) - Robert Zemekis directs this decent black comedy with great "cutting edge" effects which still hold up pretty well today. Nice to see Bruce Willis play against type with his weak-willed character but the frenemies relationship between Streep and Hawn is the true draw to the film. I enjoyed the sfx the most but I think the gag runs out of gas before the end. 3 out of 5.

Death Becomes Her (1992)
i needed to watch that one because i like all 3 of them.
I did not like the movie at all. For me, the gag did not only run out before the end, it did not arrive at all.
1/5
actually this one qualified as very disappointing, for my taste.

Darkman (1990) - Despite some dated visuals and sfx, this childhood favorite works pretty well. Some of the seemingly poor executed effects actually have a sort of surreal/cerebral quality to them which sets them apart (i.e. the shot of Darkman crouching on a roof ledge like the gargoyles on either side of him).
I enjoy the fact that he's an anti-hero, a Phantom-type character. The line he utters about learning to live with a lot of things reminds me a lot of my favorite quote from Leroux's PotO: "One has to get used to everything in life, even to eternity."
Raimi's troubled production shows but his style shines through the most with the comic book action, cartoon-style sped up shots, and the general abuse of the main character. Elfman's score works great with the material as well. 3.5 Bruce Campbell screams out of 5.
Ironman 3
I will never understand what compels parents to take their 4- and 5-year-olds to these kinds of movies in theaters.
