Last movie I saw was In the Name of the King.
It could have been an ok movie if not for some of the lamest acting I've seen. And the tree ninjas and forest lesbians with remote control vines didn't help it either.

Jason Statham should be flogged for that one.

beat
01-11-2009, 08:19 PM
In the Name of the King is quite possibly the worst movie I've sat and watched all the way to the end. I don't blame Jason though. It was just a horrible script for a movie that was doomed from the start.

Sargonarhes
01-12-2009, 04:09 AM
Yeah, you're right about it not being Jason's fault. I wanted to like that movie, but was very disappointed in what came out. I don't blame Ray either, he plays a psycho very well. Maybe a little back story before dropping the plot twist near the end. Uwe failed epically.

Just finished watching A Cross the Universe (the Justice film). Complete wankery, not funny or interesting or really even enjoyable in the slightest! I don't know if the whole crazy manager with his guns thing was serious or a play but it was completely annoying and boring, and all the prolonged shit with the Vegas wedding and their narrator/driver. Also, too many of those fans' post-show 'yo that show was off da chain' scenes, I don't really know why they thought all this footage from one tour of America would guarantee a worthwhile documentary. I might have to retract my previous statement though to say that the Anthony Keidis scene and the bit with the Hooters girls is fuckin funny, so just youtube those scenes or something and forget the rest. I am trying my best to.

Also watched the 2 Mortal Kombat films over the last few days. Can't say much of them but they reminded me of being a kid and loving that stuff. Your brother's soul is mine!

City of Ember

About a city, the last city of man, deep underground. Very interesting visually. Very boring on most other levels. Also, I generally tend to dislike films with kid protagonists doing unrealistic things like say...saving all of humanity through bumbling efforts. None of the roles were great or even slightly memorable AT ALL imo and there were way too many nonsensical touches for me to ignore. I hope the book it's based on wasn't as bad.

It could make a great game in the style of Myst what with all the puzzle solving and attention to scenic detail.

doomjockey
01-14-2009, 07:26 AM
Prince Caspian I liked, probably because they didn't sugar coat the fact that war involves all kinds of death, even if you're a group of under aged kings and queens.

Recently watched Babylon A.D....

I'd read some unkind reviews, but I didn't dislike the movie all that much. Vin Diesel basically played another Riddick-esque anti-hero, but it's never been a terrible role for him which is probably why he keeps getting it. I really enjoyed the action bits with he and Michelle Yeoh. And Mlanie Thierry who I noticed kickin a little ass in one scene.

Bad: Some major aspects of the plot confused the heck out of me. Like what's up with Aurora? The suggested explanation for her character is that she's been carrying around AI in her head since birth. How does that translate into precognitive abilities? How does that produce a virgin birth? How does AI allow her to become pregnant at all? Or block missiles with her mind? Or make her invulnerable to explosions?

Maybe I missed something?

Death Race- pretty interesting I enjoyed it quite a bit

The dark knight (saw it awhile back)- lord, I have so much to say on this movie, honestly I couldn't even sit through the first one (batman begins)
I was pretty disappointed in their creation of Gotham city, something i've ALWAYS loved about the batman movies was Gotham city; but of course they had to make it look like every other crappy modern city. Two-face also blows, I don't mind the actor Aaron Eckhart but I the character and his story was pretty weak. About the only thing that kept me watching was The Joker and the action. Heath Ledger did an amazing job with The Joker, and the action and fighting was a bit baddass in some parts. but other than that the movie was a let down.

Wall-E- (I don't remember commenting on this movie) This is one of the better modern kids movies, they make it fun and interesting for kids and adults with out catering to adult humor like most other now-a-days kids movies do. I love it and think it's a great movie.

Taken- Great movie, a little unrealistic, but when I root for the protagonist JOB WELL DONE!

Tropic Thunder- I watched it a while ago and fell asleep. Decided to give it another go. The beginning is kinda slow, but it gets pretty friggin hilarious. Which is to be expected with such a star studded cast.

The Protector- I finally got around to watching this movie again, OMFG I almost violence-gasm'd, so many broken bones. So much ass kicking.

The last new movie I saw was Crank: High Voltage and it was epic. It had a great deal more of what made the original so good which was basically mayhem. But the last movie I really watched was Doubt which is something I saw in the theater so I added it to my Netflix queue, so I could see it again along with the commentary and special features. I just found the film quite beautiful and thought-provoking. I love the sermons from Father Flynn (Philip Seymour Hoffman) because they were so well said and written. And I feel it goes beyond the question "did he or didn't he" for the film offers so much more than this simple debate.

I just watched The Green Mile and while everywhere I've seen rave reviews, I just couldn't get into it that much. Since it's another heartfelt prison film from Frank Darabonte, I kept comparing it to Shawshank Redemption and it never lived up, in my mind. The production costs felt low to me because every time they were on the green mile it felt like a stage. I know that most films are filmed on stages, they however aren't supposed to feel that way. And after awhile I became irritated with Coffey's incessant blubbering. Other than that I felt that the casting was probably the best around though I wished that William Sadler had a larger part. The acting that I enjoyed most was of Doug Hutchison (Percy) who played a great villain throughout the film. When I first put on the dvd I checked the time at a little over 3 hours and I was worried over this but it never felt that long, though I could have done without some scenes. All in all I would give it a three out of five (which is what I gave it on Netflix).

The last movie I finished was Dreamcatcher and I knew going into this movie that there were a lot of bad reviews for it but almost because of that, I gave it more of a chance. And it turns out that I really enjoyed the film. I do agree that the first half is better than the second with the characters chumming around with one another. But while the second half was rather rushed, it was still very fun and comical. It was also nice to see certain actors in different and better roles like Thomas Jane (from The Mist) and Timothy Olyphant (from Hitman). I gave it a four out of five on Netflix.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine

was truly one of the worst movies i have ever seen. the movie was complete and utter trash. it was full of cliches, the special effects sucked in some scenes, the plot was predictable, there were mutants there who shouldn't have been there, and it was so warped from the story of the comics.

examples of the stupidities and inaccuracies that the movie had:

1) powers were warped. emma's power of telepathy (albeit somewhat altered) was given to her "sister" so all she had was her diamond form. also, deadpool's powers were completely and utterly changed. it was a result of something and is a crux of the plot so i won't spoil.

2) the way wolverine loses his memories is stupid, as well as what was used to make him lose them (what was said about them earlier in the movie)

3) at the end of the movie, the "final boss" is killed and yet, even after death, his powers keep on going. it makes no sense, ESPECIALLY in the way he was killed

there are so many more to mention, but most of it is super spoilery

All the old Planet of the Apes. I have to say that is some good film making. I really like how the later instalments didn't shy away from moral, ethical, and political concepts. It's the first time in recent memory I can remember not mentally yelling at stupid characters on screen. There was one point where the apes go back in time in the third film and the then president considers executing the two, but doesn't allow fear and knee-jerk reactions to rule his decision. Shocking. The gov't wasn't made up of complete tools and idiots! Imagine that. A movie with shades of grey.

Why are Hollywood films today so unapologetically stupid?

Revolutionary Road.

The book by Richard Yates stands alongside Slaughterhouse-Five, the Grapes of Wrath and One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest as one of my all time favourite novels, so Im naturally going to be far more critical of this film than I would be otherwise. On the other hand American Beauty is maybe my favourite film too, so if anyone knows how to tell a tale of suburban entrapment it is Sam Mendes. Unsurprisingly, I cant fault his direction; its a beautifully shot period piece. However, what I feel lets the film down is the overacting of the two leads, DiCaprio and Winslet. I can understand it to a degree, the book is very nuanced and intensely character driven, Yates goes to great poetic lengths to describe the delusions the characters hold so Im sure its very hard to convey that sense when acting, and in fairness DiCaprio does a good job of delivering those scripted, controlled lines that Frank comes up with before absolutely losing his control when the conversations dont play out as hed envisaged. Still, there are a few scenes where the acting is on par with a local theatre production of Grease. Its a very good film and its been condensed to 2 hours without losing very much of the novel but in the final analysis, its all a little bit flat. You should just read the book.

Oops, my bad, I just realized that the girl I'm referring to is Gigi, played by Ginnifer Goodwin, and not Beth, who was played by Jen Aniston.

I guess the movie wouldn't have been so bad if the GIGI chick wasn't in it. I felt like strangling her at times because she was over-analyzing EVERYTHING the guys said. I had a girl friend who over-analyzed stuff like that, and it was seriously annoying. Needless to say, we're not friends anymore... maybe that's why I didn't like her
