Take a look at the 1st post in that thread, it's the same thing that shelly2222 says, it's just a copy/paste bot, which desgises himself as a legitimate poster by stealing a line/paragraph from someone in the same thread. Verdict = straight up advertisement bot.

Bot that's been virtually rendering the FFXI section unreadable for me due to the amount of spam it's generating. It's all being auto-moderated, but the moderated posts still remain visible when I delete it. And no sooner do I delete it it posts more.

This really needs a banning and IP block I think.

Ban is taken care of. I was going to try and do a better clean-up job but for some reason it's giving me errors. ; ;

Thanks Ndi - I noticed the bot is still logged in, but it hasn't posted anything since so the ban is obviously working.

And yeah, I tried cleaning up the spam threads it left too but there seems to be so much in the FFXI section it causes me time-out errors whenever I try browsing any normal thread in that section. I've informed Sarah about it, but there doesn't seem to be much she can do I don't think.

I've cleaned up that section now so hopefully you can browse the normal threads.

I don't know why, but even with the spam deleted, I'm still getting time out errors when trying to browse that section while logged in. I'm going to flush Firefox's cache and delete all cookies, and hopefully that might help. Thanks for the help anyway Jessie, I really appreciate it.

I don't know whether this is technically possible, but it might be good to put a limit on how fast members can, post say X number of posts per hour, similar to the restriction on Private Messages. This limit would expire after a set period of time, say a week after you joined. This wouldn't stop movie posters, but it would seriously fuck with the bots.

Seems this is related to spam. Might want to flush that junk out. I can't add images to my post (even by url without uploading them). My guess is these images being there are the culprit. (Certainly you guys don't want the F-bomb in 40% of your smiley list. I don't think that would go well financially for you if some specific people saw that... There are abused laws about public child safety that tend to be taken advantage of in court... a lot of times in the parents' favor.)

I received an e-mail at 1:33am British Summer Time (1st April 2015) stating that:

This IP address is a Chinese/Eastern Spamming/Hacking address, from what I've discerned. Other than changing my password, is there anything else I need to do, or is there anything you can do to stop this IP address from being able to access the FF Shrine Forums, please?

I've already banned a few IP adresses that have been attempting to log into user accounts, they tried it with mine too.

The best thing to do is ensure you have a strong password.

But if they're using dynamic addresses, I guess it doesn't make a lot of sense to block them. It mostly depends on if you have a "1234" password (brute forcing wouldn't make much sense either; unless they can get the whole password database, but even then... There's really no point. Much easier to make a spamming account).

I think solving this most recent issue could prove to be rather… Annoying. I don't think we can attempt rangeblocks of IP addresses, because while IPv6 addresses are almost never shared (and its users/customers are usually "stuck" in a certain range), there's still the chance that today's IP range of a malicious user may belong tomorrow to a legitimate one.

Also, allow me to use this message for bringing up something which still puzzles me to this day, namely: what's up with the maximum allowed-filesize for avatar(s)? 1.91 MB? Didn't it use to be 19.1 KB? I don't believe it is a perk for Staff members, heck, it seems overkill in any case.

Apparently, you've failed to read that thread (or disregarded it), and in it it has been made abundantly clear that basically any kind of mainstream music is a big no-no on this place, Shrine tries to stick to soundtracks and scores only. EDIT: To speak the truth, soundtracks and scores are shared merely because they happen to be some kind of niche thing and even those releases attract way too much attention from the respective copyright holders.

Flippant attitude? Perhaps, but again, Jessie is an Administrator, he is both technically and "lawfully" entitled to delete stuff, without giving notice, either. Should I remind you of the "Terms of agreement" each of us users have signed upon registering on this place? A member of the Staff is entitled to edit or remove altogether messages+threads, shall he/she see it fit to do so.

You've been here since 2013, you should know that kind of music isn't posted here. The content could've gotten the forum in trouble, as certain labels relating to that music can take action against the forum for being posted here.

I don't usually warn people about removing potentially harmful material, i warn them if i plan on banning them for being a troll for derailing a thread, this was not the case in this situation.

I don't know if this has been adressed already, but thought i'd let you know just in case. Maybe I'm being overtly paranoid, but can anybody confirm if this anything to worry about or not? Do you need a copy of the PM?

Bart Oss has been sharing a lot, and it's appreciated, but the problem is he links directly to uploaded (very slow), or Mega (fast) through a link shortener called linkshrink.net. The problem is that linkshrink.net is VERY, VERY shady and dangerous, according to several web checking sites. I don't use jDownloader, so that's not an option for me. Also, these linkshrink links are referrals, and he even says in every post that he has to do this. Well, why? Nobody else does.

There might be a problem with that: system e-mails have been disabled, right? I don't know about the other members of the Staff, but I haven't received an e-mail about reported posts/threads/visitor messages in months and no, it's not because the VGM userbase is "awesome", I used to receive reports e-mail from there, every now and then.

I'd say to stick to plain old private messages, or visitor messages, just in case.

I've never moderated a website before, so I always assumed that filing a report sent in-site notifications to whoever's in charge. I guess they're only sent as emails though? Either way thanks for the clarification.

In my experience, it depends on the platform/board: there's the automated private message/notification/e-mail.

Again, for what I know: the only one who gets to fix most, if not all of the "technical" stuff is Sarah.

Maybe the e-mail account used by the system got "royally" screwed up, to the point that it is beyond saving.
