Zak

is Resurrection one of them?

Agent0042
07-15-2009, 05:12 AM
Yes.

Zak
07-15-2009, 05:17 AM
I have two guesses at what the other one is, let's try one at a time.

Is it Command Ability?

Agent0042
07-15-2009, 05:26 AM
Yeah, that's it. Okay, I guess it's your question if you want it. You've earned it.

Zak
07-15-2009, 06:10 AM
Okay. What Blue Magic isn't actually ever used by any enemy?

sefiroslionheart
07-15-2009, 06:18 AM
isn't that one called "degenerate", or "degenerator" or something to that effect?

(playing ff8 right now)

Zak
07-15-2009, 07:24 AM
Nope, the Gespers in the dream sequence use it.

sefiroslionheart
07-15-2009, 07:26 AM
Then i suppose ill go with the obvious and say gatling gun.

Though honestly, i'd never seen it used in that dream sequence, but take your word for it.

Zak
07-15-2009, 07:50 AM
It does, and instead of killing a party member it removes them completely.

And no, Gatling Gun is used by those blue robots in FH that drop Running Fire.

Shadow mage
07-16-2009, 04:52 AM
Ooh i cant remember too well. But is it Fire Breath?

Zak
07-16-2009, 05:05 AM
Yep!

Well, that's the answer I was looking for. I consider any Lv#Death to count as Lv?Death, and Belhelmel's "Counter Laser Eye" to me counts as Laser Eye.
Everything else but Fire Breath is used word for word. The Ruby Dragons (where the Inferno Fangs come from) have an attack called "Breath", but it's not close like the other two examples as it isn't even Fire elemental.

Your question, Shadow.

Shadow mage
07-16-2009, 03:46 PM
Okay, im not exactly in a good position to think up a question...so ill ask a very basic one.

When you are using Laguna, during the Ruby Dragon scene, the location you are in has two possible names(from what Ive read and seen).

What are the two names?

FF1WithAllThieves
07-18-2009, 07:10 PM
One of them is Trabia Canyon, but I can't think of the other one.

Shadow mage
07-24-2009, 04:43 AM
Ok "Trabia Canyon" is correct. I have seen another name though.(ive ony seen it on the ne not in the game).

Zak
07-26-2009, 05:59 AM
Not in the game? How's that fair?

IDX
07-26-2009, 05:25 PM
My thoughts exactly. It's like saying the Obel Lake beast has a name that wasn't mentioned in the game or official strategy guide.

Agent0042
07-26-2009, 09:39 PM
Right yeah, enough of this. Question awarded to FF1WithAllThieves.

FF1WithAllThieves
07-26-2009, 11:13 PM
I always thought Trabia Canyon was a really cool geographical feature because it's the gateway to Esthar. Anyway:

We all know that Squall has the highest natural hit% (eventually 255 without junctioning anything). Who has the lowest?

Edit: Just found out it's actually a two-way tie. If you guess either one, I'll set a mark of 6 hours for someone to guess both of them. If you guess both of them, well, then you win. Please put your answers in spoiler tags for this purpose.

IDX
07-26-2009, 11:33 PM
Selphie and Quistis?

sefiroslionheart
07-27-2009, 12:34 AM
i'm honestly thinking its Irvine and Rinoa, using projectiles just seems the likely choice. Though im probably wrong.

Agent0042
07-27-2009, 12:42 AM
I was going to go with Rinoa for general suckiness in battle and Zell because while his fists may be tough, they aren't necessarily accurate.

FF1WithAllThieves
07-27-2009, 05:36 AM
Alright, since you guys didn't use spoiler tags, I'll go ahead and tell you that IDX got Selphie right and Agent got Zell right. They each start with a hit% of 98, whereas Rinoa starts with 99. Squall actually starts with 255, by the way. Whichever of you can post a question first gets it, I guess.

IDX
07-27-2009, 03:24 PM
I would've just said that we both had one character right and let the question still stand until someone had them both in one answer.

BUT! That's not the case so I'll post I guess:
Near the end of Disc 1, what do you do to release a ghost from his tomb and what does this ghost say?

Agent0042
07-27-2009, 05:23 PM
You defeat Sacred and Minotaur and the ghost asks why people feel the need to confine souls in tombs after such a long journey through life. He's the unknown king.

FF1WithAllThieves
07-27-2009, 09:17 PM
That one was pretty easy, but kudos to you, Agent, for getting the wording down so exactly.

Agent0042
07-27-2009, 09:54 PM
Well, I guess you missed that I already used that one as a trivia question not too long ago. :D Unless somebody responds, I'll edit this post with a new question in 2-4 hours.

Edit-- okay, here's the new question. During the Balamb rescue sequence, there's a guy who sells tips. What are the three types of tips and how much do they cost each?

IDX
07-28-2009, 03:23 AM
He said the brothers BUT THAT'S OKAY!

Meltigemini
08-01-2009, 02:30 PM
Bronze 1,500
Silver 5,000
Gold 20,000

Not so sure on the amounts considering I didn't go near him since the first time I played :p

Agent0042
08-01-2009, 03:56 PM
Correct on the types, not correct on at least one of the amounts, but it's yours since nobody else is playing at the moment.

FF1WithAllThieves

I always looked up where to find "the captain" on the internet so I wouldn't have to waste gil, so I had no idea.

Meltigemini
08-08-2009, 12:10 AM
Alright, sorry about the wait.

What enemy always resorts to using only its weakest attacks when there are only one or two characters alive in the battle?

IDX
08-08-2009, 12:20 AM
Uh, Diablos? I don't know because none of my characters have died since I first played the game (back when it first came out).

BUT I'LL KEEP ON GUESSIN'!

Meltigemini
08-08-2009, 12:23 AM
No, if anything he just seems to pile on the physical attacks when it's getting tough.

Maybe I should clarify the question anyway, I'm thinking of a non-boss (regular) monster.

IDX
08-08-2009, 12:26 AM
Oh. Then I'm not gonna guess because I haven't fought every regular monster in the game. Let alone trying to name them all in hopes I'll get one right.

Agent0042
08-08-2009, 12:30 AM
I read about this a while back and it ended up really helping me out. If I'm not mistaken, it's the Ruby Dragon.

08-08-2009, 12:54 AM
ruby dragon is a pain in de neck on that monster island on de west side :) island closest to hell or somethin is it? i cant remember im so silly :( wat a game though, except doomtrain he is pointless all de time you waste gettin him and hes crap, ah but it is great im only new so give us some new questions when you can please

I have no idea whatsoever what you just said.

Meltigemini
08-08-2009, 08:28 AM
Yep, Ruby Dragon is the one I'm thinking of, for some reason it only uses the physical attack and Fira with someone down. I found out completely by accident after giving Bahamut too many wrong answers :p

All right, let's see if anyone can get this one. In Selphie's diary on the panel in the classroom in Balamb Garden, which entry did she claim would be her last?

Jarosik
08-11-2009, 09:41 PM
...doomtrain he is pointless...

Correction.

Doomtrain allows for ST-Def-J x4, Elem-Def-J x4, the Forbid Med-RF ability and also the Junk Shop ability. Given that Ultima and Aura are two of the games most useful magics, the forbidden magic refine ability is far from pointless.

Sorry Agent, I can not answer your question. I just wanted to put this chap straight.

alonelikethewolf
08-11-2009, 10:06 PM
i can see where your coming from Jarosik but cant you get forbidden magic refine another way like Eden or someone. Also its not the only junk shop in the game you can get, i just think that for a gf who takes all that hassle there should be only abilities you cannot get otherwise

IDX
08-11-2009, 10:12 PM
Let's not forget his Vit 0.

Jarosik
08-11-2009, 10:13 PM
I actually got that wrong, I apologise.

Forbidden medicine is the ability. Not magic. Bahamut provides that one. However, the 4x slots for status defence and elemental defense is invaluable.

alonelikethewolf
08-11-2009, 10:16 PM
yea your right about that, dont i feel sheepish :P i guess i took him for granted, he was a pain in the ass to get though. I guess it adds to the feeling of accomplishment getting him :)

Jarosik
08-11-2009, 10:22 PM
As a GF he isn't actually that bad. The meltdown effect is useful against most, if not all opponents with bosses included. The other status effects are a hinderence too. Think about how much a pain in the arse the Malboro is to take down, and reverse the direction.

I figure that most people develope much quicker, more convenient and more efficient methods of taking down their opponents, so Doomtrain does become somewhat surplus to requirements in terms of battle. The GF abilities though are certainly worth the effort required to ascertain him.

Also worth mentioning this too that the Forbid Med-RF, combined with the right battle tactics will provide a player with stat increasing items (Str Up, HP Up etc).

Agent0042
08-11-2009, 11:57 PM
Okay, thanks, topic please. Only further posts if somebody wants to answer the trivia question I've posted. I'll give it 24 hours though and then release it if nobody can answer, since it seems to be a stumper.

IDX
08-12-2009, 12:01 AM

Agent0042
08-12-2009, 12:06 AM
Yeah. It was also where she talked about visiting Trabia, but yes, you got it. Your question, if you want it.

alonelikethewolf

Ok I got a pretty handy one. What is the purpose of the giant organ in Ultimecias castle?

Jarosik

Okay, Its fairly simple:

Name two instances and events(what happens) when you see Instructor Aki. (There are three of them but just mention two).

Agent0042
09-08-2009, 03:58 AM
Okay, if I'm not mistaken:

- Early in the game-- scolded by Aki, when student asks that Squall shows off his gunblade and you have Squall agree to it.

- After the Garden becomes mobile - scolded by Aki after agreeing to a demonstration of magic.

Shadow mage

So its your go Agent.

Agent0042
09-08-2009, 06:47 AM
Hrm, okay, been a while since I did this. I'll try not to make it too obscure... Well, all right. Name any instance of a grammatical error within the game's script. Unlike with FFVII, which is riddled with grammatical / Engrish errors, there are only five known ones within FFVIII.

IDX
09-08-2009, 11:50 PM
Oh man. I know there was one near the beginning of the game but I can't remember when it was! I remember because after reading it I thought to myself "how in the hell did I miss this?"

Shadow mage

Agent0042
09-12-2009, 11:23 PM
It's the Balamb Garden sequence when the Garden becomes mobile. When Cid tells you to go take a look outside and you get to see Rinoa and the birds flying by and the tune "Blue Sky" plays.

First one-- repeated "the."
Second one-- Grammatically incorrect "They're" (They are)-- it should be "Their"
Fourth one-- Should be "The blue-faced rock" and not simply "The blue-faced"

Zak

When the group was breaking into occupied Balamb and they needed to get past the soldier who wanted them to tell him info about Ellone, what was the excuse that Squall gave as to why they should be allowed inside?

Rin: Ah, how is your progress with our language?

I haven't played this game in a while so I can't really think of a good one. So I'll ask an easy question:

What did the elder in Shumi Village present Squall and co. as a gift and what was the meaning behind it?

And please, call me IDX :D.

balthu
11-04-2009, 09:47 AM
The gift of "nothing" by showing them his hand. The real meaning was that the elder knew it wasn't going to impress them and saw the same look on Squall's eyes as Lagunas and wanted to make them feel welcomed, only it came out weirdly. Touche.

Agent0042

The basic set of hints that are acknowledged as pointing to the parenthood are the Moombas reacting to Squall as if he were Laguna (moombas sense by their blood), the water-themed names of various characters (Squall, Laguna, Raine), Laguna's carrying Squall's Triple Triad card, Squall always assuming the role of Laguna in the flashbacks and the comments from Kiros and Ward that Squall looks like his mother, but he should be glad he doesn't really look like his father.

He referred to the Ellone system specifically as being a "toy" (his word) because it wasn't actually really working yet, but he knew that in the future it would become an impressive machine. However, I'm disqualifying this question because it was FF1WithAllThieves's turn and it wasn't fair for Renegade to say he was "bumping" the thread when less than a day had gone since FF1's answer was certified as correct. You know, it goes like this if you didn't know, someone asks something, someone answers, you move on and anyone can ask, I don't know where you adopted these(or this) "rule" where the person who got it right had to answer or go next, since this was an open Final Fantasy Vlll trivia to begin with. Also, you're not the creator of this thread and there are no rules on the first page of this thread, so what you say about these rules are pointless and nulled.

But if you need clarification, the word 'bump' is subjective and differs from person to person. I call a bump when something goes unanswered for at least 10 hours, if you check the time stamps, it was almost a day between my post and the post before mines.

Continuing on, I'll repost my question since it is a legit question to begin with and it went unanswered; What was the toy's name that Dr Odine creates and what did it do. I'm specifically looking for the name he gave it and what it does, which the latter half is easier thanks to Agent's post.

How many potential endings are there to the encounter with PuPu and what items do you receive each time?

IDX
12-07-2009, 11:19 AM
There are 2 possible endings (I prefer to call them outcomes but whatever).

1. When he asks for Elixers, you give it to him. Because you're feeling generous and have plenty to spare (or have easy access to them through one of your "connections") and in return, you get his PuPu card.

2. When he asks for Elixers, YOU KILL THE BASTARD BECAUSE IT'S A TOUGH WORLD! IF YOU WANT ELIXERS, THEN YOU GOTTA EARN THEM!! THIS SHIT AIN'T CHEAP, SUCKA!! Then you get the Accelerator item and no card.

After encountering the UFO at Winhill Bluffs, Mandy Beach (South of Timber), Kashkabald Desert and Trabia Penisula, head back to where Balamb Garden once was (Alcauld Plains), you'll encounter Pupu. The two outcomes are:

First: He asks for 5 Elixirs. Give them to him and he will give you the Pupu Triple Triad Card.

Second: You fight him, and get a Accelerator.

In short, what mellifluous tupperware said.

I just had another look, both on the Final Fantasy Wikia and in the guidebook. I'm not discounting that. However the actual Alien Encounter itself, both in the guidebook and on other sites, specifically state that there's only TWO outcomes/rewards for this event. I refer to the following examples taken from their relevant sources/sites:

Taken from FF Compendium:

PuPu
A cute widdle alien what has lost his way and got stuck on earth. The end result of a convoluted UFO quest which results in either you giving him Elixirs and him giving you his PuPu Card, or you killing him and getting a neat item instead.

Taken from Final Fantasy Wikia:

PuPu is an enemy in Final Fantasy VIII. It appears in the crater where Balamb Garden once stood once the UFO? enemy has been destroyed.

When dealing with PuPu, the player has two options: either give it five Elixirs, or attack and kill it. By giving it Elixirs, PuPu thanks the player, and they receive the unique PuPu card. The PuPu card can be turned into a Hungry Cookpot, an item that can only be received through Card refining method, and teaches a GF the Devour command.

If the player attacks PuPu, it drops an Accelerator instead. The Accelerator is a relatively useful item, and can be used to teach a GF the Auto-Haste ability. However, it can be obtained through other means, whereas the PuPu card and the Hungry Cookpot are one of a kind.

Taken from Gamewinners.com:

PuPu: Look for UFOs to pass by during a battle in the following places (you must have Diablos' "Enc-None"):

* 1. Outside Winhill Town
* 2. Mandy Beach, northeast of Timber
* 3. Heath Peninsula, east of Trabia Garden
* 4. Kashkabald Desert.
* After sighting all four, fly the Ragnarok to the rocky cliffs above the Chocobo Shrine. Encounter a UFO and defeat it. Then, head to the crater where Balamb Garden used to be. You will encounter a PuPu. Feed him five elixirs and you will be rewarded. Its only a level 5 card, but is definitely the hardest card to find.

I could list more info from other sites if needed, but I trust my point has come across.

If you want to talk about technicalities, then ok, the speed boost is fine... but officially there are two outcomes only.

Taken from the guide itself:

Now return to Balamb and explore the area where Balamb Garden was once positioned (Alcauld Plains). Here you'll encounter the alien known as Pupu. The alien will ask you for an Elixir. Use an Elixir on the Alien, and it will continue to ask you for more Elixirs. Give the Pupu a total of five Elixirs and it will give you the Pupu card.

You can fight the Alien if you want to win an Accelerator, however, giving the Pupu Elixirs is the only way to get its one-of-a-kind card.

It would seem to me, that the mainstream answer to the question are the answers mellifluous tupperware and myself stated. Still, if you want to be technical about it, BOTH answers are true, from a certain point of view.

You're a fucking rude arsehole, i have PLAYED all 3 outcomes, and there are NUMEROUS web pages supporting all 3 outcomes, so go fuck yourself before being a rude little prick!!

Anyway I shall move on and make a question even dickhead up there can answer.

WHAT IS THE HEADMASTERS NAME?

Hopefully you dont have to google it this time, prick!

Excuse me? What gives you the right to go emo overload and viciously slander someone, who provides proof which backs up their perspective? Also, if you read my post, I also had posted relevant info from two other websites as well, not just the guide.

Instead of swearing and abusing someone for their own perspective, stop and have a look at how you just announced yourself to everyone here. Not once in my posts have I gone on the attack against you. Who comes off being childish now?

Um... okay...

Settle down down everyone. Being nasty and rude in that way won't help matters at all. Just calm down and we can all go back to being friends again. :D

*throws flower petals around*

Anyway, the Headmaster of Balamb Garden is Cid Kramer. Galbadia Garden's Headmaster is named Martine though (or Dondoona in the Japanese version - extra points if you can name what that is a reference to ;)).

Well XD you can come off a little....punch in the face. ;) But I don't think it warrants that reaction. By the way the Headmaster's name is Cid! Yaaaay!

Anyway, you can call it a technicality if you want, but it's still an aspect of the game. The point really isn't the speed boost and whether or not it's effective, it's about the actual opportunity to Devour it to begin with.

I stand by my earlier post, the main reason the guides and those websites don't have it listed is because it's relatively pointless to do, as you can use the Pupu card or even the Accelerator more effectively.

I admit freely I'm blunt and to the point. I can't be bothered with 'dancing around' when faced with a topic. If that's a crime, then lock me away.

True it is an aspect of the game, I'm not denying that. All I was doing was providing evidence to back my information, that's all. Is there anything wrong in that?

In the end, it's up to what the player themselves wants to do, how they want to play it. To be honest, when I first played FFVIII (and even FFVII and every other FF game I have) I played them with no guides, no information from game websites etc. I played them bereft of any helping information, as the game was intended initially to be played. After the first playthrough, then I'll look for any info (either on websites, guidebooks, etc) and then play again, glancing at the info if needed.

Granted I probably came off as a arrogant tosspot in that response, but that was not my intention and I apologise if it was interpreted that way.

I'm not knocking the bluntness, just giving an outside opinion. ;)

As for the gameplay you mentioned, I'm the same way. I play through a game, usually without going off the storyline path, without any outside help. On a second+ playthrough, usually months afterward, I usually buy the guide for a collection sort of thing, and it comes in handy when doing the sidequests or getting items you can miss.

Also, I'm not a big fan of stat maxing, so Devour and Morph (VII) aren't really attractive to me, and I had no idea that that was a third way for this whole Pupu thing. From now on we should declare a rule (that seems obvious now) to give exact questions (as in there are three ways I'm looking for) along with exact answers. It should help avoid most of these arguments, which are opinion based as not everyone even thinks to Devour the end of a sidequest.

Jeez. Don't get your panties in a bunch. In no way was he being a rude asshole. He stated what he knew and provided sources to them; something not even you did. I don't know what your problem is, but if you can't handle something as silly as this, then you're playing in the wrong neighborhood.

Because your question is ambiguous, I'm going to say Martine, the headmaster of Galbadia Garden. But you probably wanted Cid Kramer. Also, get over yourself; you've come up with a few questions that I've thought to be pretty horrible tests of knowledge, but I didn't feel duty-bound to give you a merciless verbal beatdown for it because I have control over my temper.

I just think it's some dumb kid but that's just me.

As with the new question, he needs to state specifically which Garden because there's 3 of them.

Maybe I should just GOOGLE the answer :D!

Xiahou Dun I think you owe me an apology.

You still haven't answered me as to why I owe you apology earlier, yet at this point in time, I think it's you who owe me an apology. In regards to your inane question, here's my answer.

Balamb Garden's headmaster is Cid Kramer, the husband of Edea Kramer who ran the Orphanage most of the core characters in the party, were at when young (Squall Leonhart, Zell Dincht (before he was adopted by the Dincht family), Irvine Kinneas, Quistis Trepe, Selphie Tilmitt, Seifer Almasy and Ellone (granted the last two aren't technically party members, with Seifer only as a Guest)).

Galbadia Garden's headmaster is Martine, also known as Dodonna a obvious reference to the Rebel General of the same name in the first Star Wars movie.

Trabia Garden's headmaster wasn't mentioned in the game.

And all that without googling either... my god, is this because I actually do recall the information from my hazy memory? Or, and much more likely, due to the fact that I've just recently played the game again.... for the umpteenth time.

Awesome answer Xiahou Dun! That little Star Wars reference they threw in sure was sneaky too!

I didn't know that. Maybe because I don't like Star Wars.

You can blame the nerds. I punched one last week actually because I said Star Wars sucks and this guy wouldn't stop yelling about how wrong I was in my ear. I told him to back away but he didn't listen.

There's a thread in the General Final Fantasy section about the references to Star Wars in Final Fantasy Games.

Because I can be a nice person, here's the link (Thread 68925).

Heh! That's perfectly fine with me (the starter of that thread.) Not everyone has to like everything. In any case, if I'm not mistaken, we have a trivia game going, so let's stick with that. Xiahou Dun, how about you go ahead and ask a question. And 7, your questions need to be less vague...

Ok, here's my question: In the Timber TV station, there are some repeating phrases shown on the screen. What are those phrases?

Enkidoh

I thought it just scrolled random characters (supposedly it's static caused by radio interference from Adel's Tomb in space). But then, I was never heavily into FFVIII so I'm most likely wrong. :p

Woaaaaa, that's a really tough one :O It's been so long for me playing that part, I don't recall.. I'm gonna go with Enkidoh and guess that at least a few character names from past FF's pop up from time to time? Boy I don't even remember now :O

Darth Revan
12-12-2009, 12:57 PM
Sorry... the answers aren't random characters or names of other FF Characters. To be honest, I only noticed this myself as I was playing the PC version, so one would assume it'd also be noticeable on the PSX version...

But then, never assume.

Assumption is the mother of all fuck ups

I don't remember anything being repeated over and over again. All I do remember was Quistis calling out to Squall on his party to get up there as fast as possible.

In 6 hours I'll post the answer, but I'll give a hint:

The text on the screen is from a future boss encounter, who says only three lines in the whole game. Rather ambiguous I know... sorry :(

EDIT: Ok, here's the answer to "In the Timber TV station, there are some repeating phrases shown on the screen. What are those phrases?"

"IAMALIVE" (I am alive), "IWILLNEVERLETYOUFORGETABOUTME" (I will never let you forget about me), and "BRINGMEBACKTHERE" (Bring me back there). The signal distorted by Adel's tomb in space and responsible for the worldwide radio interference. IMO, those words are Adel's, resonating through her tomb and spiraling back to the planet lol.

Hmm, that's very interesting. I never noticed any such messages in the PSX version, but that was probably due to the lower screen resolution of the PSX, Or else I just didn't pay attention. :p

Good find though XD! :D

Anyway, I'm not much of a FFVIII guru, but I'll ask a question anyway:

Name the six train routes shown in the game, their departure points, any places they may travel through, and their destinations (this also includes routes that no longer run - are able to be ridden on in the game). ;)

Balamb to Timber
Timber to East Academy Station
Galbadia Garden to Deling City

Hmmm thats all i can think of.

Darth Revan

I'll have a crack at this, while the info is still fresh in my memory from playing it recently lol.

Balamb to Timber
Galbadia Garden to Deling City
Timber to East Academy Station

There's a railroad connecting the West and East Continents which dissect Fisherman's Horizon, but that route is no longer usable. There's also a train station near the Great Salt Lake, but like the route through Fisherman's Horizon, that is also no longer usable.

And for the life of me, I can't think of the sixth one... (Just woke up with a damn migraine headache >.<)

Are you sure that's not a computer version specific question? I know you mentioned it could be when you initially asked it, but I only have the psx version and I don't remember any of those.
