Among them are mostly rare gems, you‘ll find nowhere else. The majority is from television movies, series, or animations, I‘d watched in my childhood and found the music to be especially memorable or just for the sake of reminiscence of good ol‘ days 🙂 Genres vary between fantasy, fairytale or children series, while the composer lineage ranges from all over the world – an multicultural experience so to say!
Some of the artists here you may have heard from, others may be new to you – discovering new musical paths is always a great deal of excitement and joy, if you ask me! So please check them out and enjoy 🙂
The thread will be updated from time to time to add more soundtracks, so stay tuned and check it out!
The following index is a list of some of my favorite composers, which I want you to know a little more about, because some soundtracks are real gems, in my opinion. The soundtrack titles lead to their respective thread, where you will find any information about the title, you want to know. Have fun!
If you’re interested in any of these soundtracks, please leave a request in the respective thread. Thank you!

• Cannon Movie Tales: Snow White (1987), the soundtrack to classic fairytale directed by Michael Berz, starring Diana Rigg (The Avengers, Game of Thrones), Billy Barty (Willow) and Sarah Patterson (The Company of Wolves). The score is composed by Israeli Arik Rudich and features several songs written by Michael Berz, among them the popular "More Beautiful Than Me", performed by Dame Diana Rigg herself.
With this entry ‘ll start a new series in my audio rip section. Check it out, if you’re interested!
• Cannon Movie Tales: Hansel and Gretel (1987), which features music from the popular 1893 opera "Hansel and Gretel" by Engelbert Humperdinck, adapted by Frank Barber with songs adapted by Michael Cohen.
Even stars David Warner (Star Trek, Titanic) and Cloris Leachman (The Mary Tyler Moore Show) got each a song to sing, and they did a very good job with that (especially Leachman, who obviously had fun playing the wicked character of the Witch Grizelda).
Expect more movie tales soon, including Sleeping Beauty, Rumpelstiltskin, Beauty and the Beast and more.
Enjoy!
• Arik Rudich’s two highly popular, but rare Vinyl releases "Sattalla" and "Mantra" from 1981 and 1987. Rudich worked for a number of television documentaries, films and also as house musician from his own studio in Israel.
I already have another soundtrack by the composer – the recently added "Cannon Movie Tales: Snow White".
Enjoy!
• Cannon Movie Tales: Beauty and the Beast (1987), a musical adaption of Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve’s 1740 novel La Belle et la Bte, which stars Rebecca De Mornay as Beauty and John Savage as Beast. Music and Song Lyrics are by Lori McKelvey, a rather unknown composer to most of us. Neverless, her contributions work excellently in the context. The orchestrations are well done and the songs are catchy enough to sing along.
Especially the Alan Menken-esque "If You See With Your Heart" is nicely done.
Enjoy!
• Cannon Movie Tales: Rumpelstiltskin (1987). The film featured Billy Barty in his only lead role (as the title character), and also starred Steven Spielbergs ex-wife Amy Irving (as Katie, the miller’s daughter) and Clive Revill as the villainous King Mezzer (originally Trevor Howard was cast for the role). Amy Irving’s brother, David Irving (not the British author of the same name), scripted and directed, while their mother, actress Priscilla Pointer, portrayed the wicked Queen Grizelda. Pointer’s husband and Irving’s stepfather Robert Symonds plays the miller Victor in this family production.
Cannon Films screened Rumpelstiltskin as the opening night attraction of its "family film festival" at 1987’s Cannes Film Festival. It was the first Cannon Movie Tale released in the U.S.; though originally scheduled for November 21, 1986, it premiered in April 1987.
Enjoy!
• Cannon Movie Tales: Sleeping Beauty (1987), another adaption of the classic fairy tale "La Belle au bois Dormant" by Charles Perrault, which stars two of Hollywoods most beautiful women in the leading roles – Morgan Fairchild as the Queen and Tahnee Welch, daughter of Raquel Welch, as the titular character. (a last minute replacement for the original cast of Page Hannah). The film also stars the award-winning actress Sylvia Miles (Farewell, My Lovely), excellently cast as the horrifying Red Fairy, The American Rock Band Go-Go’s guitarist Jane Wiedlin as White Fairy, and also Kenny Baker, the one and only R2-D2 from the original Star Wars saga.
Musically, it features a synthesizer score by Joe Glasman with songs by writer Michael Berz (Cannon Movie Tales: Snow White). It also incorporates a variation of the classic waltz from Tchaikovsky’s "The Sleeping Beauty" ballet. Popular songs are "All to Sleep" and "Slumber", contributed by Max Robert (Cannon Movie Tales: Rumpelstiltskin).
Enjoy!
• Cannon Movie Tales: Red Riding Hood (1988), one of the latest films to be released in its series. It’s based on the classic fairytale by The Brothers Grimm and stars Amelia Shankley (Dreamchild) as Red Riding Hood, Isabella Rossellini (Blue Velvet), daughter of the famed Swedish actress Ingrid Bergman, as her mother, Lady Jean, Craig T. Nelson (Poltergeist, Coach) in a double role as evil lord Godrey and its twin brother Percival, Jean’s husband and last but not least Rocco Sisto (Donnie Brasco) as Dagger, the wolf.
Music & Songs are contributed by Stephen J. Lawrence, an award-winning composer, who worked on songs for Sesame Street as well as Cannon Movie Tales: The Emperor’s New Clothes, along with lyricist Michael Korie. Compared to the rest of the films, Red Riding Hood features a more modern twist of songs, like the jazzy "Lost in the Woods", or the electronic and catchy "Man Without a Heart" with its beats and vocoders.
Enjoy!
• Cannon Movie Tales: The Emperor’s New Clothes (1988), a comedy-based variation of Hans Christian Andersen’s popular fairytale. Directed by David Irving (also director of Rumpelstiltskin and Sleeping Beauty), the film stars award-winning comedy actor Sid Caesar (Your Show of Shows, Caesar’s Hour) as the Emperor, Clive Revill (Rumpelstiltskin) as the Prime Minister and Julian Joy Chagrin (Sleeping Beauty, Red Riding Hood) as the Duke, as the Emperor’s comedy sidekicks, as well as Robert Morse and Jason Carter as the Tailor Henry and his Nephew Nicholas. Lysette Anthony, who starred in Peter Yates’ Krull (1983), mimes the tomboyish Princess Gilda.
The music score is written by the Israeli-born composer and conductor David Krivoshei, founder of the Tel Aviv Pops Orchestra. The several music cues are contributed by series’ music supervisor Stephen Lawrence along with lyricist Michael Korie. Both worked also on Red Riding Hood.
Enjoy!
• Cannon Movie Tales: Puss in Boots (1988) directed by Eugene Marner and featuring stars Christopher Walken (The Deer Hunter, Batman Returns, Catch Me If You Can) and Jason Connery, son of legendary Sean Connery in the roles of Puss and Corin, the Miller’s son. It is a direct-to-video film adaption of the popular fairytale "Le chat bott" by Charles Perrault and the last to be produced and released in the Cannon Movie Tales series.
The music score is written by the Israeli-born composer and conductor Rafi Kadishson, who also conducted the London Symphony Orchestra and collaborated with composers like Lalo Schifrin on "Kol Nidrei". Kadishson is also a winner of some musical prizes. The songs are contributed by Michael Abbott, with lyrics written by Anne Crosswell.
Enjoy!
• Cannon Movie Tales: The Frog Prince (1988), featuring Aileen Quinn, best known for her title role in the musical Annie (1982) ("It’s the Hard Knock Life"), John Paragon (Pee-wee’s Big Adventure) and co-starring a young, then almost unknown Helen Hunt (As Good As It Gets, Twister) in the role of Princess Zora’s mean sister Henrietta. Boy, she’s really mean. Poor Zora.
Kenn Long and Neil Richardson contributed the music, while Kenn Long did most of the stuff, like Main Theme, Songs and Lyrics. Some of the songs are reminiscent of the Golden Age of Hollywood, for example "Too Tall Frog", or "Have You Forgotten Me?" with their Jazz flavour.
This entry finished my Cannon Movie Tales series. I hope you liked it! Maybe one or another of you recalled some childhood memories with this rare jewels.
Enjoy!
• Cannon Movie Tales: Song Collection, as the name implies, a collection of all songs from the series into one thread. I splitted them up into two volumes, starting from the first release Rumpelstiltskin to the last Puss in Boots. For those, who want to enjoy just the songs and not the score.
Enjoy!
Added:
• Luboš Fišer Film Music Collection Vol. 1, a brand new series in my audio rip section, dedicated to one of Czech’s most renowned, but sadly overlooked and forgotten composers, the great Luboš Fišer ("Arabela", "Babička", "Valerie and Her Week of Wonders").
The first volume features music from the films Tajemstv Ocelovho města, one of the first major works from director Ludvk Rža, based on a novel by Jules Verne, the balladric drama Demeterovci of Demeter, his three sons and the anti-fascist resistance, Slaměn klobouk, a light comedy set in France in the early 20th Century, Svatby pana Voka, a historical comedy based on life and weddings of Peter Vok of Rosenberg and Hldač, psychological drama telling the tale of the prisoner’s watchman Josef Vildomec. It was directed by Jiř Hrzn (30. 3. 1939 – 24. 9. 1980), one of the few films in his career which got attention, sadly.
• Giant Robo THE ANIMATION -The Day the Earth Stood Still- I-VII (1992-1997) [FLAC], a compilation of all main soundtracks from the popular Japanese OVA from the 90’s by maestro Masamichi Amano and the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra. • 100 Greatest Film Themes (2007), a compilation of the most popular film themes from 1939 til 2006, including Alfred Newman’s classic "20th Century Fox Fanfare", Max Steiner’s "Gone With the Wind", Maurice Jarre’s "Lawrence of Arabia", Ennio Morricone’s "Once Upon a Time in the West", as well as other famous composers like John Williams, Danny Elfman, Jerry Goldsmith, Bernard Herrmann and many more. Performed by the former FISYO, The Prague Philharmonic Orchestra under conductor Nic Raine.
Enjoy!
• Luboš Fišer Film Music Collection Vol. 3, which features excellent piano-based music from the poetic story of Dotek motla (1972), directed by the acclaimed Juraj Herz, as well as the silent black-and-white drama Romanetto from 1970.
Enjoy!
• Jiř Srnka Film Music Collection Vol. 1, which covers a new artist in my Czech Composers section – Jiř Srnka (1907-1982), which wrote excellent film scores in equal measure to Hollywood composers like Nino Rota, Mikls Rzsa or Alfred Newman.
This collection features music from Otakar Vvra’s controversial history drama Kladivo na Čarodejnice (1969), which covers the events of the Northern Moravia witch trials of the 1670s, Otakar Vvra’s Hussite Revolutionary Trilogy of Jan Hus (1954), Jan Žižka (1955) and Proti Všem (1956), the 16th century history drama Rozina sebranec (1945) about a girl, does not know the feeling of beeing loved, until she meets the glassmaker Nikolo, the drama Děvčica z Beskyd (1944), which features frantic string compositions by Srnka, as well as the historic comedy Nezbedn Bakalř (1946) with several songs by the Scholae Cantorum Prof. Venhody and the poetic Střbrn vtr (1954) about a boy, who discovers love for the first time.
Enjoy!
• 100 Greatest Film Themes Take 2 (2010), a compilation of the most popular film themes from 1941 until 2009, including compositions by famous composers like John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, Bernard Herrmann and many more. Performed by the former FISYO, The Prague Philharmonic Orchestra under conductors Nic Raine and James Fitzpatrick.
Enjoy!
• 100 Greatest Film Themes Take 3 (2013), the final compilation of the most popular film themes from 1930 until 2012, including popular songs from films like Mary Popins, The Jungle Book, Grease, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin and many more. Performed by the former FISYO, The Prague Philharmonic Orchestra under conductors Nic Raine and James Fitzpatrick.
Personally, I don’t like this compilation that much compared to the other two, because it’s more a filler album rather than worthy of "100 Greatest Themes". Sure, there are gems within, but most of the songs aren’t worth its title. Neverless…
Enjoy!
• Skladby Jiřho Srnky / The Compositions of Jiř Srnka (2012), the first official compilation of music by Czech composer Jiř Srnka, released by SUPRAPHON a.s. It features suites of music from the film Měsc nad řekou (The Moon Over the River), which emotional and lush string compositions marks some of the composers best works. No wonder, it was released years later. The other half of the CD contains a concerto for violin and dramatic orchestra featuring three lenghty cues performed by the Czech Philharmonic and violinist Vclav Sntil, recorded in 1960.
• Jiř Srnka Film Music Collection Vol. 2, which covers a more lighter and comedy-based style of the dark and epic Vol. 1, featuring music for the two popular fairytale comedies by author Jan Drda: Hrtky s čertem (1954) and Dařbujn a Pandrhola (1959). Then, we have Kluci na řece (1944), a black-and-white comedy with poetic pictures about a group of boys having adventures at the river’s side, and last but not least maybe one of the composer’s most popular films from that era, the even more poetic, psychological drama Měsc nad řekou (1953), which features lush, emotional string compositions, which were even released as suites on an official CD in 2012 – Skladby Jiřho Srnky (2012), the one I posted above.
Enjoy!
• Luboš Fišer Film Music Collection Vol. 4, which I already finished some time ago, but never published until now. Sttn cena) and the psychological thriller Dnes Naposled (1958), which shows the inevitable deterioration of the lives of the main heroes destroyed by alcohol.
Sny na neděli (1959), a poetic love story about a couple from a lung sanatorium, which escapes their everyday life. Until the youngster’s health condition gets worse… , the lighthearted family comedy Punťa a čtyřlstek (1955) about a boy and a dog, the drama Vlc jma about a love triangle between the aging mayoress Klara, her handsome husband Robert and the newly recruited maid Jana, in which Robert falls in love. Lastly, the romantic dramas Minulost Jany Kosinov (1940), featuring the popular song "Modrav dlky…", and the similar styled Modr zvoj (1941), both directed by J. A. Holman and starring Vlasta Matulov in her debut roles.

Enjoy!
• Dvork: Stabat Mater, Op.58, B.71, a new release from Decca with Dvork’s famous cantata from 1877. Conducted by Jiř Bělohlvek, who died on May 31, 2017, shortly after this release, this marks one of his last roles and at the same point, one of the best performances in his career. The music is performed by the Czech Philharmonic along with the Prague Philharmonic Choir and solists Eri Nakamura (sopr.), Elisabeth Kulman (alt.), Michael Spyres (ten.) and Jongmin Park (ba.). Enjoy this in glorious FLAC quality to celebrate Easter!
Enjoy!
• The Fabulous World of Karel Zeman – a project I was working on for quite a time. It features music across the filmography by acclaimed Czech director Karel Zeman for his nine major films from 1955 until 1980, including Cesta do pravěku (Journey to the Beginning of Time), Vynlez zkzy (The Fabulous World of Jules Verne), Baron Prsil (The Fabulous Baron Munchausen), Blznova kronika (A Jester’s Tale), Ukraden vzducholoď (The Stolen Airship), Na kometě (On the Comet), Čarodějův učeň (The Sorcerer’s Apprentice) and Pohdka o Honzkovi a Mařence (The Tale of John and Mary).
Musicwise, we have world-class composers on board here – E.F. Burian, Zdeněk Liška, Jan Novk, Luboš Fišer, František Belfn and Karel Svoboda. Some names may sound unknown, some are more prominent, but one thing the composer’s got in common – the written scores for the films are incredible! Listen for yourself in my newest audio rip.
