Knig der letzten Tage
A King for Burning
Wojciech Kilar

The 16th century in Europe, a time of great change. On the one hand, the incoming Italian renaissance comes "revived light" after the dark and gloomy Middle Ages. On the other hand, following the Reformation, it is a period of religious wars that have brought violence, suffering and death of many inhabitants of the Old Continent. Especially suffered significantly from the German city of Mnster is located in North Rhine Westphalia, which in 1534 came to power members of the radical movement of the Reformation, called Anabaptists. Under the leadership of the charismatic Jan van Leyden, this move fast preached the coming of the final judgment and the terrible suffering in hell for all who do not join them. After only one year, and bloody battles, Mnster - a city that was to be the New Jerusalem - was reflected by the troops of the Catholic bishop and Count Franz Waldeck. The leaders of the Anabaptists, the van Leydenen at the head, were sentenced to death, and their bodies were suspended in cages on the tower of the local church.
Based on these events, German television ZDF filmed a two-part television film Knig der letzten Tage (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0106051/?ref_=ttrel_rel_tt), which was adopted with mixed feelings. Critics complained that the filmmakers neglect treated historical events, focusing on the less interesting aspects. Despite these comments, two things easily stand out. Award-winning actor Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds, Django Unchained), who shines in his first major role, along with the famous Mario Adorf (The Tin Drum, Winnetou, Fantaghir) and of course the music by Wojciech Kilar, who became famous in the world a year before with his score for Bram Stoker's Dracula by Francis Ford Coppola. In contrast to the film, its soundtrack really liked the German critics. And no wonder, because this is really remarkable, even an outstanding soundtrack, which in some ways has surpassed himself film - certainly one of the best in the rich heritage of the Polish composer. Kilar, with the disposal of the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra and choir, took full advantage of the potential of creating a beautiful and epic score that perfectly captures the events of that era.
But what makes this music unique is its extremely rich sound and great, catchy melodies.

The main theme of Knig der letzten Tage is a very memorable one, which in all its glory can be heard in the opening, the majestic Gloria - Die Wiedertufer. His other arrangements scroll naturally throughout the score, as for example in Der falsche Engel, or in the style of the era with a trumpet solo in Knipperdollings Tanz. Another very important theme, which is often repeated, is the beautiful, lyrical theme assigned to one of the protagonists -
Engele Kerkerinck (Engele-Melodie, Die unmgliche Liebe, Engeles Traum). These two interlaced with each other motifs form the solid foundation on which are erected another, as good subjects, for example.
Another motif, one for the tragical character of Clarissa, the beautiful daughter of Knipperdolling, based on a delicate, sacred sound of the chorus (Agnus Dei - Clarissas Thema and Clarissas Tod).
Choir is a very important element in this score. Already in the aforementioned Gloria - Die Wiedertufer, and in the subject Clarissa, he introduces us into a state of extraordinary concentration. But its strength does not end there.
It steadly builds up in songs like Miserere - Die Ber and Miserere - Engeles Kind, but the real power is shown in Sanctus - Der Prophet, where the voice of the chorus turns into a real scream, the strength of which could shake the heavens. To an unusual combination of otherworldly chorus with the main theme comes in Die Eroberung, which, as the name suggests, illustrates the reflection of the Mnster forces with Count Waldeck.
