Mal mořsk vla
The Little Mermaid / Die kleine Meerjungfrau
The original orchestral/electronic score from Karel Kachyňa’s 1976 Czech film adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid, composed by
Zdeněk Liška
Vocals by Lenka Korinkov

Liška’s legacy in the history of European cinema is huge in volume but relatively modest in it’s celebrity. Having already composed nine scores for Kachyňa’s films to add to his 1976 filmography of 150 completed soundtracks. Mal mořsk vla is one of the most idiosyncratic and haunting undiscovered scores in the annals of European cinematic history.
Available for the first time ever.
Beautifully remastered from the original mastertapes with the full cooperation of the seminal Barrandov studios in Prague.

In a movie about mermaids, music has key importance. Zdeněk Liška wrote the soundtrack to Mal mořsk vla in the context of traditional water-based music. Antonn Dvořk's Rusalka served as inspiration for some of the compositions, for example "King Of The Ocean" and "The Little Mermaid (Song)". Other notable quotes are from Claude Debussy's La Mer on "The Black Sea", Debussy's Sirnes on "The Song Of The Siren (Theme)" and Ernest Chausson's Pome de l’amour et de la mer (Op.19) on "The Song Of The Siren (Song)". Beyond that Liška also adopted the water illustrating aspects of Bedřich Smetana's Vltava (Moldau) in his sequence of notes. Compared with the complex soundscape of the sea, the music for the human world is held in modest dance music, heard on "Games".
