First owned score ? hmmmm. I think it was Vangelis' score for "1492: conquest of Paradise". that or Kamen's "the three musketeer". Nah, must be Vangelis' score. I remember it coz I've never been able to watch the movie. I went to see it with my school back in 1992 (I was 10 at the time) and the torture scene of the beginning coupled to the slaughter of the indians and the tortures of said indians later in the movie made me cower up under my vest for the whole fuckin' movie.
So I didn't see the movie, I heard it. And the score made quitre an impression on me. I hated and still hate the thing, but I was so enthralled by the score that I bought it on tape, then when I finally killed the tape after 17years of intense use, I bought the thing on CD. got me hooked on vangelis, actually.
As for the first score I bought as a "collector", I'd say it was Conan the Barbarian's score by poledouris, around year 2000. and then, 4 years ago, I began to discover the world of music sharing (through FFshrine, I got here while googling for the score of "Plunkett and McLean"). Then, the download binge began, and hasn't yet stopped.
My first album was Big Screen Little Screen by Henry Manicini. I got it for the NBC Mystery Movie theme. I bought it for a quarter from a yard sale. I was 11. While on vacation with the family in '77, I saw the Star Wars double LP at a store in New England and begged, begged, begged them to let me have my birthday present a month early. They did, but I won't be able to listen to it until Christmas, because we didn't have a good player at the time.

I remember when I first got it, I was appalled by lack of dialogue and SFX, and was not interested in it much, than 3 or 4 years ago, I decided to listen to it again and was hooked.

Just out curiosity what was the first score all of you owned and your earliest memories?
In the 70s Morricone's Once Upon a Time in the West was a gift from my brother. But my first real blown-away experience with film music at a young age was Goldsmith's First Blood back in the 80s. But I became a film music enthusiast a lot later.
...To watch Superman and Star Wars in cinema was a blast - no serious time to worry about music back then. :-)

Well, I was aware of film music at a rather young age, but my interest really flared (meaning I began to actually buy a lot more film scores than pop, metal or anything) because of two things: my growing interest for animes back around 1999, and my passion for role playing games (I love using scores while playing. helps set the mood) :D

Finally discovered this thread, so I'm just gonna jump right in here.
My first score ever was probably something John Williams. I was like, 5 years old when I first got into Spielberg films, and their scores were a big part of that, so I actually think I got a compilation album from the library or something, ripped it to my computer, then returned it (the future music pirate in me started developing at a very young age). After that, it's all just a pretty big John Williams-esque score blur to me, until I started getting into other composers (Trevor Rabin's "Deep Blue Sea" was also one of my first actual 'score' albums, as well as Randy Edelman's "The Mask" and the Lincoln Bootleg for "Ghostbusters" by Elmer Bernstein.)
As big of a Zimmer fan as I am now - and this is pretty embarrassing to admit - but I actually didn't really start fully appreciating Hans Zimmer's work until The Dark Knight came out. No idea why, I guess that was when the dam officially broke or something, and since then I've been obsessed. I'd had other Zimmer scores before then, of course, but that was when his music finally clicked for me.

in response to the topic of a new blade runner score, i think AIR would be a good choice. they've proven themselves quite capable as score composers, and if it's gonna be purely electronic, these guys could perfectly capture the atmospheric "prog-wave" feel of the original vangelis score while also keeping it original.

Zimmer's new stuff is pretty good, but only when he doesn't hand it off to five or six of his protegees. The pattern I noticed with Inception and Sherlock, arguably two of his best scores in the past five years, is that the only credited composers for both are Zimmer himself and Lorne Balfe with some additional music (I like Balfe, I think he needs to get some more mainstream attention and go solo on some big stuff). As opposed to On Stranger Tides, which in my opinion is the best example of the pinnacle of Zimmer's laziness, have (and I'm not exaggerating at all here) five credited additional composers, not to mention the Rodrigo y Gabriela duo.
It's too bad, because when he actually puts forward the necessary effort, the end result is something quite spectacular. But when he doesn't, well, it's just pretty uninteresting. For instance, the only real parts of the Pirates of the Caribbean scores that I like are the themes by Zimmer alone (The Kraken, Jack Sparrow, Davy Jones, Marry Me, ect.). The rest of it just doesn't really interest me all that much.

I honestly felt nothing while watching Pirates 4. I don't see all the hype over it.
If there had been a lot of talk over 2 or 3 getting a full score release, then I'd be ecstatic.
I mush prefer the organ for Davy Jones and the Kraken over nothing in Pirates 4.
I think the overall "3D" was the appeal to 4. The story was okay. Not as well planned and fleshed out as earlier ones.
Sparrow had some funny parts, but not as much as to buy the movie.
2&3 is where it's at, for me, personally.
Really love the Pirate Lord of Singapore's theme and cues.

The only thing more epic is the complete or hell even that alternate Whiskey Outpost music. There is a bootleg that is floating around (not here for obvious reasons) that has the complete score at a pretty good quality. I was disappointed in his score to ST3 - I had been looking forward to it since it is in the epic space adventure genre - and had Basil Poledouris attached to the 1st movie. But the score - like the film was lackluster. Oh well. Should have known for a straight to DVD release.

I wish that every time a DVD was release they had the score CD in there as well - at least on the Special Editions. I remember buying Jon-Roh and finding the score CD in there. How cool was that? (Same with the Full metal Alchemist movie.) It would be great if companies like Criterion did that at least. What a way to differentiate yourselves in a crowded market? Plus it seems that at a time when movie studios are trying to find new markets - they have an underexploited source of revenue under their noses. Do a marketing campaign - put some $$ into NPR for some Score Shows on the Classics services - inform the public as to what they are missing and then offer it to them :)

A.I never really worked for me. Doesn't touch me on any kind of level, though that might also be because of the way it's presented on the album. It's all so bland. I haven't seen the movie, so that might be intended, but as a work by Williams I find it so so.

what does 'on the fence' mean?
That you're ambivalent towards the score?
Just saw your question and thought I might clear this matter up...
"On The Fence" means neither yes or no. Neither. If you're on the 'Yes' side, then you're on the 'Yes' side. If, on the other hand (you have four fingers and a thumb), you are on the other side, then you are on the 'No' side. So if you're on the fence, then you're neither here nor there. So, no, it doesn't mean "ambivalent" as such, but more like "I don't mind it really at all" (i.e. "Yeah, I like it and would choose to listen to it, but it maybe could be better..." kind-of-thing).

It was NOT the admin here, nor Varese. A more personal order from :higher ups" told him to take it down as it was too hot. Although some, like our friend konio, paradoxically may not care about that. dig?
I found A.I. to be bland as well, but very moody. The big thematic action cues are not there, and it really toned down the film's mood and score. I have to believe that was an intentional thing, as both the director and composer have proven they can do big bright action.

Also a thread newbie like cheeseparty67, so I chime right in with my first score.
I collect film music since 1995. I THINK that my first score was the Lion King casette. I still have it; in fact, it's lying ight in front of me right now. I got it from my mother for birthday because I really liked the Elton John songs from the movie. However, I ended up liking the score portions much more, ironically. However, there still was Jurassic Park lingering in my head from when I watched the movie in 1993. So, when we bought our first CD player, this was my first album to get. I eventually had to buy a new one because I didn't know how to carefully handle CDs back then. What followed was a mixture of Star Wars, The Rock, Starship Troopers and the Alien series. The last three scores were also cases where I was not satisfied with selection of music provided, so they would eventually lead me to the bootleg and promo scene.

It was NOT the admin here, nor Varese. A more personal order from :higher ups" told him to take it down as it was too hot. Although some, like our friend konio, paradoxically may not care about that. dig?
I find it strange companies don't have a closer look on us, i takes a single employee to check us out once a week
and demand removal of about everything. There aren't THAT many soundtrack sharing sites, companies certainly
go about it halfheartedly. Which makes me believe they simply can afford us sharing.

The Source is a light-hearted Arabic film that's not a great but Amar's score is top-notch is his are almost always.
He deserves more recognition than what he gets.
The Coulais score is from another so-so film but his score is great. Quirky...bizarre and all around fun stuff.
I'd highly recommend it.
If they aren't available here, you know who has them if you're curious.

Hi, I'm new here. For the past two years I have listened to the three Bourne soundtracks (Identity, Supremacy, Ultimatum) on my commute to work. Those soundtracks have kept me going through some really dark times. Especially the track "At the Hairdressers".
All this time I had only one soundtrack for each movie because I didn't think there were any others. Until I came here today and found a treasure trove of unofficial soundtracks, which I have found amazing. I am going to collate all the Bourne soundtracks on this site and figure everything out before the new Bourne movie comes out this year. There are a lot of confusing and conflicting posts about the Bourne soundtrack and I think it needs a good "summary" thread to explain what soundtracks are out there.
I was hoping someone could give a brief summary of Retail vs. Extended vs. Complete soundtracks: Who are they made by? Where do people find these extra scores from? What does Varese Sarabande have to do with it? It seems like they offer the retail soundtracks but those tracks sometimes get mixed into unofficial ones?

Varese Sarabande is the label releasing 2? of the three scores. Unfortunately, they are a banned label here and can't be posted openly. The extended tracks, and complete scores, are industry leaks. Someone, somewhere, made the albums for personal use, and they got leaked into the on-line community. The two complete scores **should** be just that, complete. I think the expanded score is still missing some. The retail album is just that, the album that was meant to be sold. Often these albums contain smaller cues merges into bigger tracks, or alternate versions of cues, and do not always conform to what was heard in the actual movie.
I cannot be too specific, as I do not have the scores (not my thing), but there shuld be plenty of members here to help with that.

i've mentioned this in sts and my bond thread but i thought it deserved a mention here as well
rumours are bouncing around the web that intrada MIGHT (very big MIGHT, folks) be re-releasing bond scores in 2012, which is coincidentlly the 50th anniversary of the first film, dr. no
http://i.imgur.com/qtjYQ.gif
i know for a fact that this could mean an expanded man with the golden gun score, because lukas kendall himself has said the masters exist, but emi ran out of money for the expansion project in 2003 and that one never got an expanded release
that leaves the following
dr. no - expansion very unlikely as old as the film is, since the masters have likely been lost
from russia with love - same as dr. no
goldfinger - already expanded in 2003
thunderball - already expanded in 2003
you only live twice - already expanded in 2003
on her majesty's secret service - already expanded in 2003
diamonds - already expanded in 2003
live and let die - already expanded in 2003
tmwtgoldengun - see what i wrote above
the spy who loved me - never expanded; not sure about whether the masters exist
moonraker - masters are supposedly lost forever, but we can always hope and dream some bored billionaire will fund an expedition to uncover them...they are most likely somewhere in france
for your eyes only - already expanded in 2003
octopussy - never expanded; not sure about the masters
a view to a kill - never expanded; i've read rumors the tapes were lost, not sure though
living daylights - already expanded in 2003
license to kill - never expanded; somewhat unlikely as mca seems to own the rights to this one, but perhaps mgm and eon can make a deal
goldeneye - never expanded
tomorrow never dies - never expanded; pretty sure most of the score has already been released though
the world is not enough - never expanded
die another day - never expanded
casino royale - never expanded; most of the score has already been made available, except for the film version of title song
quantum - never expanded
again, just a rumor but i'm really really hoping this will happen. with so many other series and films getting scores reissued in recent years, it's a travesty that a series as well known as bond has seen so few expanded scores.
emi's (who owns rights to most bond scores) back catalog is of course now owned by UMG, who has worked with intrada before

this was posted at intrada:
To everyone... may you have a Happy New Year!
As today kicks the new year off, all of us at Intrada are already knee deep in projects. To be honest, what we have lined up this year is the most ambitious slate we've attempted in our 26-year history. Hopefully there will be something for everyone. Look for some pretty sensational releases coming courtesy our partnership with Disney. In fact, projects with virtually every major studio are now under way... including a milestone new series with one of them. Look for classic recordings you thought you'd never see available. More details on that soon! Even something in the Excalibur series. Just loads of releases for you to choose from. I can't expect you to support them all... but hopefully there are numerous new things coming from us that will tickle your fancy throughout 2012.
And so, with lots of excitement for Intrada ahead, and knowing that numerous other soundtrack labels will be abundant with cool releases... may this new year bring forth musical joy to us all.

Just saw who was a nominee for best original Score:
John Williams: War horse
John Williams: The adventures of Tintin
Howard Shore: Hugo
Alberto Iglesias: Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
Ludovic Bource: The Artist.
Only thing I hope is that the oscar doesn't go to Williams. his scores were very good, but not but not worth an oscar...

I place my bets on L.Bouce's THE ARTIST
My favorites in chronological order:
The Artist: very smart, and hey, it's Max Steiner. Aah sorry, I meant of course Ludovic Bource ...
TinTin: the smartest score this year
War Horse: perfect, but a bit too nearby "Far And Away"
Hugo: something strange, so undecided ...
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy: never heard (feel free to send a pm to me)

There are four tracks in particular that I am totally obsessed with from film and video games:
"I don't Think Now is the Best Time" by Hans Zimmer from Pirates of the Caribbean 3: At World's End
"Battling the Green Death" by John Powell from How to Train your Dragon
"Escaping Gotha" By Michael Giacchino in "Medal of Honor: Frontline:
"The Final Game" By Jerry Goldsmith from the soundtrack of Rudy
I couldn't recommend more highly that everyone who likes this kind of large scale orchestral music should give these a listen! I have listened to each of them so many times it's not even funny. They're all at least like 5 minutes as well.
If anyone has heard a few of these tracks and can think of another similar one that I may like, please tell me ASAP! I'm always on the hunt for epic orchestral music like these breathtaking tracks!
I'm also a big fan of the Jurassic Park soundtrack, even though I don't care as much for John Williams in general, THAT album kicks ass undeniably. I like "The Mummy" quite a bit as well, along with the new Batman soundtracks and Modern Warfare 2's soundtrack. Oh, and Lord of the Rings I quite like as well. The extended version of the "Khazad Dum" track is incredibly memorable along with "The Battle of the Pelennor Fields" also from the extended release.
Also music from Two Steps from Hell is awesome, don't know if anyone's heard that stuff. "To Glory" is my favorite of there's- pumps me up like nothing else!
I wish that official albums included all the music! I find myself always having to dig around for extended pirated soundtracks- when, I actually would just buy them on itunes if they were truly complete scores. I don't mind spending some money on them typically for the ease of finding it- but they make me look when they only include half the damn music!

Um, is it better than all of the other contenders? if you think so, than yes it IS worth an Oscar whether its as good as all of his (Williams) other works or not.

Definitely the best of the nominated. Dont like the album, but the for your consideration

I will remind you all that as dead as it is, this thread is for DISCUSSION only. No requests, there is a thread for that. And NO download links. Since the thread is in GD, links are not allowed. The purpose of the thread was originally to allow members to "chat" and talk without clogging the download section, as requested by admin. It obviously has fallen on hard times though, the poor thing.
