I updated the link for the Esper Analysis courtesy of docrate1... Thanks very much by the way! ;) ...but as far as I can remember it was just a repackaging of the Esper Edition with the Ladd Company as a bonus and tracks 4 and 5 on disc 2 splitted so to get three tracks instead of two... I suppose I will have to release the Esper Retired Edition one of these days!
Enjoy the EMS 2011 in the meanwhile! :)

oh sad because I have read somewhere this is one of the finest edition available... :-S so let's have a try anyway, now i m very curious

Listening right now to the EMS 2011...I'm speechless. This is by far, the most perfect sounding versions of some tracks i've heard. Rachel's song is absolutely gorgeous, and I've been bluffed by the quality of the Taffey lewis club song...

I think I'm going to stop downloading any other BR bootleg. This is...not perfect (I miss the little bit of dialog of Roy at the beginning of tears in the rain)...but it comes very very close !!:D

Waiting for the lossless version AND disc four (even If I already have Ogi no Mato :))

Hi b5

Thanks for this hugely commendable effort by you and all the EMS Team!
Just one minor fly in the ointment with the fixed artwork: the back cover of the Japanese disc has two errors in tracks 9 and 10. The word 'length' is misspelled in both.

Keep up the good work guys, you rock!

Every peer of good will get three different versions of "Tears in the Rain/End Titles" under the tree for Christmas (or the snowman in the yard if you wish)... and I am not counting the official versions...

When B5historyman wrote about the EMS spawning numerous other compilations... he was meaning it! You cannot image how much material was eventually not used for this 2011 version. :)

Surely not the same "Ogi no Mato" version included on the japanese bonus disc anyway... As time came to releasing the new EMS, several changes were made to the original sources... and this song eventually underwent some "minor changes" for this edition. I trust you might like it. ;)

I must have definitely been sleeping... (or not getting to sleep that properly) when I edited the tracklist... my fault on that.
It was being wrong since day one actually... and I just couldn't see it. Well spotted! ;)

A final note for the serious collectors only: this "lossy" version has a different set of artworks... and a very fine set indeed! Collect them all!

Oh... and I was forgetting to say thanks both to JacKc and B5historyman for their dedication on this project... but they already know that, do they? ;)

Also a personal "thank you" to Stephane, Carlos, Derek, Filip, Alvaro, Steven, Patrick, Aaron, Sebastian, Vicente, Chandler, Plimmy, Spiderwalk and to everyone who has posted on the thread.
We have achieved quite a lot in sharing our knowledge on the subject! :)

I don't really mind. I have my homemade version of Tears in rain, which I did the day I bought the Dvd. Probably one of the most beautiful theme ever written for a death scene in film history. And does that mean that Santa Claus is going to bring stuff for good little replicants ?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Notes :

Some of the tracks presented here are essentially (re)assemblages of elements buried in the official view/mix of the movie, enhanced for the listener with soundtrack, audio effects and narration to place the cues in their cinematic context; the flute music and percussion piece being an extreme example of this more cinematic approach to the soundtrack. The rest of the tracks were remixed from the original audio streams to add extra aural details on the japanese cues. There might be some debate as to whether some of this is part of Vangelis' original compositions for the movie, or just someone else's creation. A couple of cues were finally uncovered and included here, thanks to the input of 1187hunterwasser and Kazushi Kimura of the Blade Runner fan network. The rest are part of an ongoing search, which one day may come to a conclusion and expand the Blade Runner soundtrack catalogue further.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Comments :

One of the aspects of the multicultural melting pot portrayed in Blade Runner was the influence of far eastern culture in the daily life of 2019 Los Angeles. From the Chinese food vendors of the White Dragon noodle bar, through the Cambodian sales lady on Animoid Row, right up to the Shimata Dominguez Corporation sponsorship of the off world colonies. Pervading all of this was the music of the far east, whether blaring out from an animated billboard or drifting down from on high from the ever present advertising blimp. Of the pieces played, “Ogi No mato” is the most widely known among the fans, in a mainly truncated version. There were other pieces played and not always as conspicuous. Last year when one of the tracks was identified through the fan network as “Chidori no Kyoku”, the EMS team members began a search of various sources to identify which version of this track was used.
The most likely candidate was a performance by Michio Miyagi. The second step was to review the film and find when the music was played. The track in an excerpted form turned up in the background music playing during the scene with Deckard waiting for a seat at the White Dragon. Layered with other music including “Ogi No Mato”, identifying whether the Miyagi version was the correct one came down to a blind audio test between B5hm, who noted where the excerpt in the film corresponded exactly to the part of the Miyagi track, and DC. When DC independently identified the same part, they both concluded apart from a slight alteration in pitch, this was the correct version. DC began the time consuming process of transferring the track from vinyl to digital media and cleaning the track up, removing over 14,000 audio defects to present the track in its fullest and cleanest version here.
The search still goes on for the alternate blimp track heard as it passes over the Bradbury and during the scene as Deckard hangs from the side of the Bradbury. B5hm’s Japanese source could only identify two words “hito me” literally translates as “person’s eye”....

The EMS Team present here cues taken from the different versions of Blade Runner including previously unreleased flute music and percussion piece.
These pieces were heard in the background during the sushi bar sequence and are presented here for the first time.

Thank you all for the EMS. Just listened to the first two disks, but......thought the editing on the second disk was shocking! Till I realised I had burned to cd with gaps. LOL! I assumed they were stand alone tracks for some reason i.e. unmixed. The first disk seemed to be anyway. Never assume, I must tell myself! Love the disks, it would be nice to see info on how it was produced, programmes used etc, for us audio geeks!

I think someone has tried to edit the vocals out of that cue at some point, but the result wasn't that perfect... Me! Me! I know the answer! That particular song is to be found on the official 1994 version of the soundtrack!

If you were meaning what we think you were asking here's another answer:

...I decided to leave the "Wait for me" track off EMS as it wasn't an authentic BR track ie it was composed for the original official cd release not the film. I did make the exception for "Piano in an empty room" as it lead nicely into the following track.

Hope that answers your question..

Still... you may find that particular track included also here:

I surely did not want to add to the confusion around “Blade Runner” bootleg releases by making just another one. It was an idea of mine for five years but really got started with the release of the “EMS Recombination” edition that I wanted to cut down to my personal listening preferences...

Which of course evolved into “another” release. In the process I fixed some things, shortened lengthy sound-effects laden pieces, adjusted volume differences and added new material. Here's an abbreviated overview of changes and differences to other releases, in particular the great work of the “EMS Recombination” team ...

Prologue: adjusted dynamic range, among other tiny things
Los Angeles 2019: fixed ending
Empathy: better sound
Blues: better transition between album and tapes material
Deckard's Dream: better sound from fresh material
Tears In Rain: fixed clipped parts
End Titles: fixed intro and outro

For the two covers coming with this release I used the film's titles font, “Goudy Catalogue”. I thought I'd share that information, too as it could not be found elsewhere on the web.

Thanks for the cover additions too! ;)

Notes :

Done from the lowest generation sources available (read: no material from other fan-made releases used). Virtually no sfx, fully restored and remastered for the first time ever.
Sources: trilogy, tapes version, outtakes, dvds, other official releases.
The outtakes and dvds are the only lossy sources used, since lossless versions are not available.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Comments :

The guy has done a man's job sirs. Restoring to the next level.
This has to be the best approach to the official soundrack issues since the 2019 Edition on such regards. Period.
About the sources used: the audio streams from the dvd are close to lossless as far as we might consider them... even with a blu-ray audio stream the result would not have been that much different... the only better sources would have been the original masters... and this is the closest attempt in comparison to what every other attempt might have achieved to date.
Expect the unthinkable from Zyzz's take on the matter.
A touch of vintage sci-fi on the artwork kindly provided by JackC.

This better encode includes also the official reworked set of covers.

It's a very sad day for me today. It was one year ago tonight that my little cat Molly died, the EMS Recombination project was dedicated to her memory. Both Jack and DC knew how upset we were when she passed away and created the little in memorium that went out with the original release and on the blogspot.

We still miss her and there is an empty space still in our hearts with her passing. Time never heals but it helps dull the pain.

We currently have three cats. Sputnik, Roy Batty and Sam J. Jones and I'd be a wreck if anything happens to any of them.

I too can understand your pain, even if I've never had cats. Actually I had rabbits that were living freely in the house (oh, the countless book they ate ! :)). Their successives deaths over the years were really Tragic moments...

I miss you, mister Globule. Same goes for Caius, Titus and Grandis...

good to see this thread is still kind of active...

It seems it is the same version fixed by Pendor as posted on the lossless thread. No need to download things twice if you have already did it... plus I am aware of several minor changes before getting to the final version as posted on the lossless thread... you might want to get it from there just to be on the safer side...

Thanks for the link anyway! :)

Tremendous work here, I especially appreciate the EMS Recombination 2011 and Restored/Remastered 2011 (improved bitrate) releases.

I thought I should point out that EMS Recombination 2011 (or 2010 for that matter) is not included on the first page. It would really help if someone added comments or notes to each version on the first page to explain what the differences are. I had to read all 33 pages of this thread to get a grasp of all the different options.

For anyone else who's having difficulty deciding which version to download (and this is just my opinion), between EMS 2011 and Restored 2011 I'd say all bases are covered for both the theatrical version and the extended/additional cues version of the soundtrack.

On an interesting note, the "Stand A Chance" track from Toshihiko Sahashi's The Big-O Original Sound Score 1 was composed as a direct shout out to Blade Runner's End Titles music. The drums at 0:17 are identical to Blade Runner End Titles and the melody starting at 0:36 is similar overall. The Big O: Stand a Chance - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LhtZWkNa3YU)

Other soundtracks which took heavy inspiration from Vangelis' work on Blade Runner include Deus Ex: Human Revolution (specifically Main Theme - Icarus), Inception, and Mass Effect. If you're looking for music similar to BR, you might check those out.

The archive also includes part of the Vangelis' Grand Suites, some ringtones and a more detailed "making of" of the different editions.

These are the complete stages of the five work in progress renditions to get to a definitive vision of the Blade Runner soundtrack. More than three years in the making with subtle yet effective changes when moving to the next stage, this release is to date one of the best sounding approaches to the unreleased Vangelis cues used in the movie. It appears that it was soon decided to move to a different solution rather than the initial mixed approach as used in the Esper edition perhaps, and that approach seems to be the generally accepted vision of this release. The original titles as intended by the maker were retained.
For a more detailed "making of" of the different editions see also a selection of the messages that accompanied the releases to witness part of the spirit that animated the whole Yahoo! Group at the time.

When The Sound Of Blade Runner Definitive Edition 2010 was ultimated, the maker as part of a personal thank you to friends and people who contributed to the project also with their support, sent out a limited set of the release which included a special bonus disc along with some last moment changes and unedited versions of some of the cues officially posted on the Yahoo! group.

Only differences on what we will be referring to as the Limited Edition, is that it has two longer edits (or better two longer unedited versions) and different (minimal) editing on another couple of cues. It did also include a fourth bonus disc exclusive to this release which was omitted from the official posts on Yahoo and BR2019. Differences with the limited version and the torrent originally posted on br2019.com are as follow:

The Sound Of Blade Runner Intro (Full Length Version) 3:29
The Sound Of Blade Runner Intro 0:51

Rachel (there is a stronger change in volume at 1m 12s)
Rachel

Tears in the rain (rainy edit) (there is a softer change in volume at 0m 55s)
Tears in the rain (rainy edit)

Dangerous Days Raw (Full Length Version) 2:47
Dangerous Days Raw 2:18

The rest of the songs are exactly the same down to the frame. So we want to keep the more detailed Limited Edition for posterity.

Major thanks to Zhora, JacKc, Synaptyx and Xavier for the help given in re-assembling something that seemed to have gone lost in hd crashes and forgotten backups. :)

Lossless for Vicente's work was also posted on the Do Androids Dream Of Lossless Audio Files A Blade Runner Soundtrack Thread (Thread 75274) if you wish. ;)

There were surely different edits of the same tracks as the editing work proceeded but this is what it was made official.

For The Sound Of Blade Runner 2010 Edition Vicente made some major changes to eight tracks compared to the previous 2009 version. With the last four additions that followed shortly after the 2010 Edition the project turned into The Sound Of Blade Runner Definitive Edition... also according to the maker's choice for a better name to reflect the latest changes. ... and that was the last chapter for the Vicente's Blade Runner Edition.

We cannot possibly thank enough Vicente for what he has achieved.

Somehow his work went lost for most younger peers.

I just felt to re-post this for the historical value that his work has.

His work meant a lot to the new replicant peers on the block, as the work of Sebastian, Jamie, Chandler, Plimmy, Anita, Alvaro, Anthony Micele, and as the input of Antas, Steven, Bentley... the artworks of Synaptyx, JacKc and Pendor.
And the list goes on... you know who you are.

I just wanted to express our gratitude to Vicente for his work on the soundtrack making people aware of a project that is sounding as better as the ones you might end up buying on eBay perhaps... if not better.

I trust the people who understand the concept behind this release might appreciate what he did.

On behalf of most peers that simply came after everything was already shared.

Our belated "muchas gracias" to Vicente! :)

THIS IS A MULTI-VOLUME ARCHIVE AND YOU WILL NEED ALL SIX PARTS IN ORDER TO SUCCESSFULLY EXTRACT THE CONTENT.

I have just noticed that I made a silly tagging error for the Workprint Titles/Workprint prologue on Vicente' The Sound Of Blade Runner 2008 and 2009 versions

Proper tagging for the artist field should be Robert Randles.

Sorry for the incovenience. I cannot possibly re-up the whole thing for that! You might fix it quite easily I trust!

Amazing - I don't quite believe how many releases there are.

I couln't believe that myself the first time I stumbled here... then the number of releases got even bigger... with pretty nice alternatives to the ones you can usually find on the net! Hope you like some of them enough!

Depending which time of the day you download from their servers you might get a message telling that the download is temporarily not available... just keep trying.
The workload on their servers must be quite heavy I am guessing. I have an account with them but you should be able to get the files all the same anyway.

Thanks, Dada. And.. yeah... I thought that trying to download at different times of the day would solve the problem (as it has always worked in the past) but it hasn't yet. Every time I attempt to download Parts 2 or 3, the bps starts at well over 100 and will take about 18 minutes to complete. However, then suddenly... the bps rate drops like a stone (to under 10) and it will take well over 10 hours to complete download. So... I just cancel the download and wait to try again later. Same results each time.

So... if is not too much trouble... and I could download from another source... that would be great. Thanks.

Okay... thought I would try it one more time. And... this time it stalled out at 21.5 mb (of 125 mb) instead of 4.4. -- before dropping down to 13 bps and extending the downloading time to 10+ hours.

which is the sfx less complete scores?

If you mean the most faithful version to the music Vangelis wrote for the film I would say the Blade Runner - Restored/Remastered 2011... and if you are not that concerned about quality the Off World/Gongo editions...
The restored Blade Runner - Nexus 6 Version Volume 3 had both the Off World/Gongo editions merged into one anyway...
The Blade Runner - 2019 Edition is another good bet at that.

A nice try was also the Blade Runner - The Tapes Collection which tried to restore the sources used for the Off World/Gongo editions... but not as good as in the Blade Runner - Restored/Remastered 2011 perhaps.

Then if you want to be as complete as possible then you will have to pick up either the Blade Runner - EMS Recombination or the Blade Runner Complete Score by Spiderwalk.
The Sound Of Blade Runner Definitive Edition should be ideally perfect for you... as The Final Mix, or the Silver & All Those Moments editions... but there is some occasional FX on them
The Blade Runner - November 2011 edition is a bit shorter but it is a nice alternative too.

Then there's a release called Blade Runner 29th Anniversary Edition which is ideally the closest to what you are asking... but it will be released soon.

I hope having been of some help for your quest! If you get round to scroll back the thread pages you will find more answers to your question anyway! ;)

I don't know what's wrong with some links at some point but I know of people in USA having had all sort of problems with some links which resulted more problematic than others.
I sometimes mirror them on other servers and what is not working for someone is working for another one.
A waste of server space but it cannot be avoided I'm afraid...

I'm glad everything was ok in the end! Let us know what you think of Vicente's work! ;)

Blade Runner 29th Anniversary Edition = quality of Blade Runner - Restored/Remastered 2011 and completed score as Blade Runner - EMS Recombination ??.

Blade Runner 29th Anniversary Edition = quality of Blade Runner - Restored/Remastered 2011 and completed score as Blade Runner - EMS Recombination?

<a target='_blank' href='http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/41/63297503.jpg/'><img src='' border='0'/></a>

In its initial stage it was supposed to be just a parody of the 20th anniversary edition really. No more than that. :)

The 20th Anniversary is a mixture of the Off World edition and the official 1994 edition without taking into account the huge difference in quality between them.

On The 29th Anniversary something was done to even out the differences but I would not count on quality for the 29th Anniversary.

At least same quality of the official 25th Anniversary sources and not-so-good quality for the rest of the unreleased cues on the Off World edition.

The sources used are the same for the Blade Runner - Restored/Remastered 2011 but the sound is much more cleaner on that.

When the source masters for the 29th Anniversary were done (see LMS Edition and The Tapes Collection), denoising was not taken into account. So everything was done keeping as much of the original sources as originally intended.

I grow up with cassette tapes and I am used to the noise in the background but the newer generations will find the Blade Runner - Restored/Remastered 2011 much more cleaner.

The maker of the Blade Runner - Restored/Remastered 2011 did a proper denoising job on his work, but unfortunaly the vintage hardware used to produce the 29th Anniversary masters (not to mention the presets used to get to the stage prior the mastering process) are no more and I cannot possibly go back to where everything has started unless doing everything from scratch.

As usual the covers are ready but the audio to go with it is still to be perfected!
Possibly there will be two different sets of it.

But yes! As complete as the EMS 2011 which shares some of the edits of the 29th Anniversary (or the other way round) for a total of 80 cues!

Pretty big I'm afraid! :)

Hi DC,

here's my personnal gift for the forthcoming 29th Anniversary limited Edition :

Best regards,
JacKc.

May I take that one of the two different sets might have this alternate front then?
The original cover artwork by Pendor will be more minimal and stylish, so that may be a nice alternative in case! :)

nice DC logo! :) although it reminds me of an ugly fashion firm....

Damn it! Mine wasn't registered... They will have to live up with knowing that they copied JacKc's logo I'm afraid! ;)

Amazing!!

Cant Wait!!

Aprox. released date??

It seems I am finally balancing my time to finish it off... So the answer is very soon! :)

Take your time, DC! Haste makes waste... I suppose it can't be too difficult to adjust the artwork, should it come to that. And '30th Anniversary Limited Edition' would certainly have a nice ring to it as well! It would even make it sound somewhat more 'prestigious'. But that is only a personal opinion of course...

If you get round to scroll back the thread pages you will find more answers to your question anyway! ;)

No way! We have already done the covers! We cannot change that now! :)

The Esper Retirement guys got along with the 25th anniversary tag with a couple of years late... so we might get along with just a couple of weeks... or months at the latest!

And '30th Anniversary Limited Edition' would certainly have a nice ring to it as well! It would even make it sound somewhat more 'prestigious'. But that is only a personal opinion of course...

Like it has happened when compiling the EMS, time helped smoothing out lot of discrepancies between the sources and adding extra details by the day.
I didn't want that to happen... but it is already happening. By sheer chance the whole dreamy sequence of the workprint version of the love scene has just materialized... and we need to sort that out now.
Other changes were made to the trailers and the logo music... lots of changes... the proper credits were compiled... it will be just details and checking if we can get any better that we did after that I trust...

I was struggling to meet the deadline actually... but as long as our ideas won't get to a stand still... there will be a chance to see the release in 2012... but since we did most of the work in 2011 we might get along with 29th Anniversay!
A 30th Anniversary will have to be the official release by the man himself I am wishing! ;)

I wanted to point out something in "I Am The Business". The latest EMS Recombination release seems to have an error with that track. It sounds like there are two different sources that fade in the middle but one of them is faster than the other, creating this unintentional pitch or key change. You can hear it near the middle when one of the synth swells come in. The Blade Runner 2011 release sounds like it's faster than the movie track, but it doesn't have that key change in the middle, so I'm assuming that's an error in the EMS edit.

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love the EMS Recombination, however I feel like I should point it out so that you can fix it for future releases. :)

Believe it or not... I became aware of the problem less than a week ago when trying to rework a better version for "I Am The Business" for the 29th Anniversary starting from the version used for the EMS Recombination. :(
It was not me to spot the quirks but the maker of the Blade Runner 2011 actually...

The track has a substantial problem at the 32.5 second mark, which is where two sources were spliced together to create the resulting track. The problem lies in the fact that those sources were not in the same pitch. To be precise, the second part is about 2/3 of a semitone down, which is consistent with the speedup caused by 24fps film to 25fps PAL conversion or rather the inverse of such a process in this particular case.

Depending which source you got used to listen to, you might get the feeling of sounding faster perhaps... at least that's what I am trying to convince myself not being able to tell the proper pitch of the whole thing. Once you get used to something that's it... Unfortunately it was not the EMS Team to make the edit for that but I am aware of the problem and will try to solve the issue as soon as we finish the editing work on the 29th Anniversary.

It's a mixture of the 2019 bootleg and the Esper 4.
It's been cleaned up using software that allows you to edit specific frequencies in spectral waveforms. The footsteps and various clicks were cleaned out of the Esper whilst the version was already clean... The beginning comes from the Esper 4, second part comes from the 2019, third goes back to the Esper 4 with the piano section from the HD 5.1 audio... First part until 0.33 comes from the Esper 4 - only the section from 0.33 to 1.17 comes from the 2019 boot, the second part comes from the Esper 4 (crossfade at 1.17) this has the thunder and Empire Strikes Back "whoosh" foley removed.

... and that's where all the problematics lie. Once you know where to look... the rest should not be too difficult. For the 29th Anniversary we chose to do the whole sequence from scratch anyway.

Here's a preview of the whole love scene music we ended up to use in place of the version used on the EMS 2011.
"I Am The Business" and "Prelude To Love Theme" were reworked from the 2011 Edition courtesy of Zyzz.

Please report if anything sounds quirk now... or any bad feeling about the new edits.

Thanks in advance. :)

DC is the man!

Just going off topic here but I need some help tracking down some missing "Supernatural" music. The tracks are "What a way to go" and "One More Once" these are from Black Toast Music, someone has posted part of a rip from the BTM site on 4shared and a youtube track claiming to be what a way to go isn't. Wondering if anyone has the full versions of both tracks.

I am currently focusing on releasing a couple of projects and getting some other jobs done. I will try to do my best to restore all the links that went dead with the closure of Megaupload in the next months as soon I finish things off. It was my intention to repack all the archives to ensure a sort of master collection... but it will take some time... and that does not seem to be something I am having at the moment.
Will try my best though! ;)

Enjoy the best guess at a Vangelis album on the soundrack so far! :)

The artworks were/are in the first archive... as I am re-uploading them in the link below as officially uploaded by JacKc:

I see. :) No. The covers are the ones originally released with it.

As a matter of fact the lossy version is different from the lossless version. The ones I provided a link are for the lossy version... the ones you provided the link are from the lossless version.

Have a look at these:

Basically you only need to get a triple cd case to house all the 3 cd's... resulting in front and back cover (and some alternate front covers)... plus booklet... not three cd covers!
If you print them down you'll see what we meant.
The Japanese disc is housed on a standard cd case (both the shortened golden edition---the original concept meant for it---and the longer official version)...
Hope everything is a bit clearer now!

Have a look also here: http://emsrecombination.blogspot.com/

Edit: I liked the EMS definitive edition. But to be honest, I'm getting lost with all those versions around. We need a guide ^^:

I was as much confused as you when I started getting curious---then---crazy about the whole thing Blade Runner... then I have learnt the subtle differences of every different release. If you can spare some time to go through the previous posts you will be finding all the anwers there...
As for the EMS it was meant to be a guide among those subtle differences taking the best of every other source available plus lots of new edits to give a more complete angle of the soundtrack.

Another couple of releases are ready to be shipped in a few weeks/months... which will add to the confusion perhaps... but you will all decide on that! ;)

Any new info about 29th Anniversary limited Edition??.

It is being almost radically re-worked to the point that it is turning into a 30th Anniversary edition it seems... Some of you might have seen right about changing the name afterall...

What it was originally intended as a "parody" (for the better) of the original 20th Anniversary edition was finished in December anyway, used only as a workprint for the changes needed to make it better now... plenty of changes actually...

What we are doing is making what I intended as a quick and dirty here-you-have-it-all-Blade-Runner-soundtrack-related in a single package... into something better... which is sort of driving me crazy I must admit.
Spare time seems to be quite a hard thing to find lately, but I will see into posting this workprint by the next week as it was my intention... let's see what the other half thinks about that! :)

We are nearly finished with the 29th Anniversary it seems. Only a song left!

We wished to add a better edit of "Tales Of The Future" but it seems an impossible task. All the versions around (Official 1994, Outtakes and 1993 Bootleg) seem to differ at around 3:50 when every version turns into something different.

So not to generate confusion we agreed to post the final output first and the files originally intended for it at a later date. You won't notice much of a difference anyway... except that the original concept consisted of 9 cd's perhaps... you're not that blade-runner-crazy are you? :)

We're nearly there... just a question of... days... weeks? ;)

The other half is doing a terrific job in giving all the cues a more polished touch... he is having a more objective approach as a whole, while I got lost in the making I have to admit.

After inevitably adding new edits when working on the cues for the Tapes Collection, LMS, Ultimate MR2, Chinatown and EMS (leftovers really) time after time it grew bigger. The 29th was actually half of the project while the rest is the more cinematic approach of the EMS Japanese disc experiments... but well... the important bit is nearly finished... the rest can wait. :)

Hi guys
Just to warn people that there is someone on ebay selling the first edition of Blade Runner EMS Recombination. Me and DC and Jack are in the process of reporting this indvidual.

If you happen to have an account on eBay make a search for EMS Recombination and report the item please. We spotted at least two so far.
Incidentally the previous week while searching for a Blade Runner item the search did not find anything... but I won the auction tonight! Fair price too hopefully! :)

All this makes one think twice about sharing...

Once upon a time there were three friends. They were quite good friends. There were mutual agreements between them. Things not writtten but done in the name of the most common sense people like to call friendship. They used to share all the music they got. One was taping music for the other without even asking. It was in the cassette times, before elaborators made user friendly came into fashion. There were not auctions as today and occasionally you could spot someone putting an ad on the music magazines selling the tapes you were just taping to someone other you met at the local club, pen friends or knew while travelling to catch the bands playing live their music. When cd's came in full vogue things did not change much. It only changed the media in a way. But most good things cannot last long perhaps. One of those friends mysteriously wished exclusives of knowing bands and owning exclusively their music, and for reason the other two's might have failed to understand to date given to all a chance. One night all of a sudden on an unlucky chance one of these friends passed away. And all his stuff went with him. All the music he collected and shared via the elaborator's programs of the time just gone in the queque of the people waiting to get a byte. Gone all of a sudden... as him.
What he has shared is still to be found where he left it.
We all were sorry. The other friend carried keeping his findings very private and trading them only with like minded individuals. None of his things were given to the friend pretending to own the exclusive to track the most rare releases by sheer luck with unaware owners that he keeps calling trading... or adding a different cover to music people has long bought... but let's get back to our three friends.
You need to know I was the third one at some point, but before me there was another third one, who happened to pass over ten years earlier. Also that time his records, tape cassettes and cd's went with him. Most of them were given to the friend pretending to own the exclusive to track the most rare releases by sheer luck he kept calling trading... but most of his things went someplace else where none could ever listen to them. I still own what he left me.
I wish everybody a better luck than the two friends now gone. But at some point you need to decide on what it is good and what it is fair. I made the choice on what's bad long ago and I still stand for the lesson I've learnt in those days. But I might be a bit older than most of the people around perhaps and I wish you all to learn the things you will decide to be good for you.

If we're not sharing what will come of our knowledge?

All we have done and are doing could never have been achieved without helping each other...

This is where we have got so far:

Thanks. I'm organizing. I might need some help with provenance soon.

Blade Runner - Definitive Edition (a.k.a. Blade Runner OWM Definitive Edition) 2000 Off World Music* [68'05 18 tracks] [65'44 16 tracks] [5'28 10 tracks] [169'17 44 tracks]

typo? "[5'28 10 tracks]"

Blade Runner - Definitive Edition Bonus CD (a.k.a. Blade Runner OWM Definitive Edition Bonus CD) 2000 Off World Music* [35'28 10 tracks]

Is there a reasonable scan of the Bonus CD original artwork in circulation? Is the Bonus CD exactly the same as Disc #3 of the Blade Runner OWM Definitive Edition?

Blade Runner - Esper Definitive Collectors Edition (a.k.a. Esper MR3 Edition) 2005 Esper Productions* [15 tracks] [20 tracks] [12 tracks] [27 tracks] [196'05 74 tracks]

Is the [196'05] duration time correct? It reads as over 274 minutes in my iTunes.

Blade Runner - Silver & Moments 2008 Grey Fedora [79'37 20 tracks] [79'28 21 tracks] [159'05 41 tracks]

Is this exactly the same as the two separate releases but in one package?

Blade Runner - Esper 'Retirement' Edition (25th Anniversary Culmination) (Pendor Edition) 2007/2010 Esper Productions* [60'19 16 tracks] [65'36 21 tracks] [78'11 12 tracks] [79'26 9 tracks] [79:42 9 tracks] [363'15 67 tracks] + [dvd bonus disc 174 tracks]

Is this exactly the same as the other release by the same name except for two more songs on the DVD? Or how exactly is it different?

Chinatown Club - Blade Runner Definitive Compilation 2011 Zelmo Productions Ltd. [66'55 24 tracks] [54'17 14 tracks] [121'12 38 tracks]

Is this exactly the same as The Extended Cut version but with fewer tracks?

Is the 'Blade Runner Soundtrack (Bootleg Edit)' from DC in Post #177 (http://forums.ffshrine.org/f92/blade-runner-soundtracks-ultimate-thread-72496/8.html#post1470719) not a named release but just, as it says, tracks from 'Off World' and 'Gongo' combined and tagged?

Thanks in advance for any help, Zimmerman.

Yes, my mistake. Sorry! I've fixed the typo error about the "Blade Runner - Definitive Edition" Bonus CD and added the correct time duration for the "Esper MR3 Edition". The 196'05 was actually referring to the duration of the release without the "Los Angeles, November 2019" album.
For most of the time durations I trusted the Traderpage list... even if I double-checked lots of them and corrected them using Foobar2000 (never trust iTunes. It does not account for gaps for example)
They should be quite right I trust... or at least I have to trust Antas who originally compiled it.

Depending which version of the "Esper MR3 Edition" you are having we might get different time durations though. Some versions have disc 1 swapped with the MK2 and disc 3 swapped with the original "Los Angeles, November 2019" album... which is which went lost in the efforts of some peer unfortunately. Have a check for the track 13 on disc 4 at around 2:08... if it has a missing section we know who did the rip and had a ready fix for that. If everything is fine and you remember where you got that we will appreciate! You might have an "original"! :)

Yes. There is a quite reasonable scan of the Bonus CD original artwork. Sending a PM tomorrow. :)
The Bonus CD is exactly the same as Disc #3 of the Blade Runner OWM Definitive Edition which was officially issued as 2cd version with the 3rd disc being a limited collector item only.
That's why it was included in the list as a separate entry. It might also be more reasonable listing the original double cd version as well at this point.

Yes. The "Blade Runner - Silver & Moments" is the double package of the both Grey Fedora releases "All Those Moments Music From The World Of Blade Runner"and "Blade Runner - Silver Edition". At some point the makers had different views about the tracks to include on a single disc, so they made two separate releases if I remember correctly.
I should have included the comments made to every entry but I am focusing on finishing other things at the moment and most of the infos are scattered through the backups... not an easy and quick way of handling things definitely...

"Blade Runner - Esper 'Retirement' Edition (25th Anniversary Culmination) (Pendor Edition)"... well... they should be identical for the five discs with the Blade Runner music... except that this version has the proper indexing of the tracks... which is not accurate at all (to say the least) on the original version... and it has a fix for track one (which has the intro totally missing on the originals we had).
The dvd is nearly double the size of the original and got most of the tracks replaced with lossless versions... It tooks weeks only to spot the boxes where the cd's and vinyl's where stored... but I would not personally include that on the torrent.

"Chinatown Club - Blade Runner Definitive Compilation" was the original idea for the compilation... the extended cut was ... well... an extended cut. Same songs plus some additions which were not in the movie... and not on the original tracklist. Two m3u files were included in the original archives to reflect this.

Yes. The 'Blade Runner Soundtrack (Bootleg Edit) is the same as in the Blade Runner Bootleg Soundtrack 2004 [75'49 19 tracks] entry... It was what we common peers had it at the time since the Off World got never shared with most of the common mortals... and to be exact this is where the Nexus 6 Volume 3 came from really. The maker was not having sufficient night sleeps at the time (which should have benn mandatory) and took the bad habit of fixing (making more proper we might say) most of the more obscure versions he was having... and since he owned nearly close to nothing (compared to what he has piled to date) the "LMS", "Ultimate" and "Tapes Collection" were conceived to fix what he was having at the time.
The trouble, as you might see, came when he started having more versions of the soundtrack and eventually proper night sleeps... By this time it emerged he was not the only one "left" in those whereabouts (FFShrine and Yahoo)... damn hackers working overtime... and lot more contrived to make the matter more complicated... Diverse perhaps? ;)

The problem with people like disneybrideandgroom and le_petit_ben (and plenty more really) is the whole eBay system letting them do what they do. They have been reported. It is being pretty sad news what people like them do that on a regular basis to earn their living. I wish the trend will be quit really... :(

Liner Notes :

"Despite being well received by fans and critically acclaimed (nominated in 1983 for a BAFTA and Golden Globe as best original score) it was not officially available for over 12 years due to a contractual dispute between Ridley Scott and Vangelis. This led to some bootlegs and intermediaries, the first, a tape - tape suspected of coming from a sound engineer during the film's mixing, it was popular, despite subpar audio quality given there were no plans to release a Vangelis score. The first official release was a reinterpretation by the New American Orchestra in 1982 that bore little resemblance to the original. In 1989 the Vangelis "Themes" was the first official release to include just a few tracks. To coincide with the release of the 1994 "Directors Cut", Warner Music released the first official soundtrack, sadly it was missing many parts included in the film, although some new tracks had also appeared. Here at last, is the complete soundtrack on this exclusive double CD."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Comments :

This is a deliberately (re)packaging of the original Esper Edition to which the "Ladd Company" logo theme from the Gongo Edition was cleverly stitched.
Some milliseconds of silence were vaguely omitted to fit the design of the release and the indexing was exclusively altered in order to list the extra "Cross Now, street scene" originally part of "Salomes Dance".
Get the originals if you find yourself wishing for a better encode. If you are thinking the seemingly informative liner notes are somehow unexact... they are.
Also included a needed fix for the not-so-wise change of gain on the extra track.

Notes :

2011 started with the release of Blade Runner: EMS Recombination; a team effort to create a Blade Runner soundtrack as clean as possible, without F/X and dialogue for fans to enjoy. On its release the soundtrack was well received, spawning numerous other compilations. However the work didn't stop there.
For the lossless release, the EMS Team wanted to offer something a little different and not just repackage the original version. Changes were made to the running order and tracks were reworked as other sources were found.
Extended versions of "At Mr. Chew's" and "Desolation Path" were created along with new tracks "Waiting For Zhora" and "Memories Of Green/Blade Runner Blues". With the help of some new friends, the EMS Team are proud to present for the first time a clean version of "Thinking Of Rachel".

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Comments :

Blade Runner EMS Recombination is an own attempt to create a “Best of” soundtrack from all the available bootlegs of Vangelis’ superb score.
The selection criteria was very simple: find the pieces that represented the film score in their cleanest (without dialogue and sfx as much as was possible) versions and be of the best available sound quality. It kept most of the titles of the source tracks only changing a few as some had some obscure titles not immediately obvious to the wider audience.
I hope you enjoy listening as much as I did while making this compilation.

10. Ogi no Mato [The Folding Fan as a Target] (Full length version) 10.42

I surely did not want to add to the confusion around Blade Runner bootleg releases by making just another one. It was an idea of mine for five years but really got started with the release of the EMS Recombination edition that I wanted to cut down to my personal listening preferences...

Which of course evolved into another release. In the process I fixed some things, shortened lengthy sound-effects laden pieces, adjusted volume differences and added new material. Here's an abbreviated overview of changes and differences to other releases, in particular the great work of the EMS Recombination team ...

Prologue: adjusted dynamic range, among other tiny things
Los Angeles 2019: fixed ending
Empathy: better sound
Blues: better transition between album and tapes material
Deckard's Dream: better sound from fresh material
Tears In Rain: fixed clipped parts
End Titles: fixed intro and outro

For the two covers coming with this release I used the film's titles font, Goudy Catalogue. I thought I'd share that information, too as it could not be found elsewhere on the web.

This better encode includes also the official reworked set of covers.

...could you please tell us if there is any news about the 29th Anniversary?

It is almost finished. We are currently easing some minor issues caused by the extensive editing so to get a more cohesive sound on all the 108 cues included on it. The other half should post a trailer on YouTube when we get past this stage. :)

I always found this youtube clip to be incredibly inspiring, it's not perfect but very close - apologies to anyone who has seen this before;

That Vangelis bladerunner sound... - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fne0oIEv-WI)

I know of more than a person posting also here who has tried that approach with the software sinth version of the original analog keyboards... but it is not easy to replicate the analog part of the fx on the tracks even if technically we know all the elements needed to get there... we would at least need the real thing to get as closer as possible...

Vangelis scores Antarctica - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CRO8BT6o8Us&feature=related) :)

5) Blade Runner - Tales Of The Future (2004) (http://www.mediafire.com/!678rvaev3f7bu76) including the alternate covers (http://www.mediafire.com/!dgvixcv944n1fd4) courtesy of JacKc.

6) Blade Runner Soundtrack Outtakes (2002) (http://www.mediafire.com/!smsvalsxnqloli3)

Splitted and iPod ready... I was given one for my birthday and I still could not find the time to plug it... oh my...

7) Vangelis - Blade Runner Bootleg Limited Edition OST
As it says in the description it was a compilation of the Gongo and off World Edition... no more nor less than the Blade Runner Nexus 6 Volume 3... which is technically better considering that did include the very same songs.
Get that unless you are a collector about everything with a Blade Runner tag on it.

8) M Presents.. Music From Movies - Blade Runner (2006) (http://www.mediafire.com/!f6e9vaz8tty5t4j)

9) Blade Runner - Struzan UK Edition
Not sure about what you meant with this. It was never uploaded here matter of fact and most likely a repackaging of the Blade Runner - 20th Anniversary Edition
If you meant the Blade Runner - Struzan Beta then you might technically nuke it because the only version ever shared was a low quality encode of the repackaging of the original Blade Runner - Special Edition - Mmoires vol 7... though the most complete that was ever shared around matter of fact.

10) Chinatown Club - Blade Runner Compilation (2011)

It is a multi-volume archive and you need both part 1 (http://www.mediafire.com/!ns97rlizk19am8d) and part 2 (http://www.mediafire.com/!pc9xss1gvbgsukw) to successfully unpack the archive... plus a basic knowledge of m3u files to enjoy both the 24 tracks and the original 14 tracks version!

There a song at the wrong pitch and you will need to replace it with the one included in the fix (http://www.mediafire.com/!c3vqg77ky7qqc3o) though.

11) Blade Runner - EMS Recombination - The Japanese Tracks (Limited Edition) (Bonus Disc, 5 tracks)

I opened the mediafire file, but I didn't find any tracks)

I would have worried if you have found any actually! It is not supposed to have tracks on it. It is only the original short version tracklist of the extended version which you might have downloaded already.
Only the relative infos were included because the rest was in the other archive! :)

It goes without saying that you need to be smart an owl to know beforehand that links won't be working unless you swap the exclamation mark (!) with a question mark (?).

No need to say further.

Thanks for sharing the awesome "EMS Recombination" soundtrack and Japanese tracks. This was just what I was looking for after putting together my own extended edition. Of course, I had to make some changes to the song sequence for my own personal taste. Being that the Ink Spots song "If I Didn't Care" should have been before "Los Angeles 2019" and "Piano Memories" was missing before "Esper Analysis". Now it looks more complete. To think I did a full 5.1 audio rip from the "The Final Cut" DVD to get missing music tracks and here was a fully complete edition waiting for me to find. Jeez. I should have came here first. LOL.

... and this is what I could say:

Though I seriously doubt a sensible reply on such issues might ever come... it will have to be someone else's responsibility to preserve this or other releases that might follow a similiar fate from now on. I will stand for what I wrote. You will decide on what is fair and what is right if it will come to everything else.

Does anyone know the actual year of release and album title for the "Ensemble Nipponia - Ogi no Mato" song? Thanks for the info. Found out that the Michio Mayagi "Chidori no Kyoku" song is from the "Ikuta ryū sōkyoku" album from 1978 (track 23). BTW, did anyone figure out the Bradbury building window music yet?

Phaota, the track "Ogi no Mato" comes from the 1976 album Japan: Traditional Vocal & Instrumental Music - Shakuhachi, Biwa, Koto, Shamisen performed by Soloists of the Ensemble Nipponia.

I have the Michio Miyagi's version on a really old vynil that was have used to get the version on the EMS (the actual recording was much older than 1978 and the vynil was a vynil tranfer itself since they probably lost the masters) but it will be interesting a link to the version you are mentioning. Have you had a chance to listen to all the album? Was it ever re-printed on cd?

BTW, did anyone figure out the Bradbury building window music yet?

Not yet I'm afraid. It might even be Vangelis' music as far as we might know...
Perhaps one day some japanese fan will stumble on that tune by chance and the mystery will be solved if it was not Vangelis' music! :)

Track 23 looks like a cd track... even if 11 minutes for a track number 23 seems unlikely on a single disc unless it is not an eight cd box...

I see. That's why I could not find anything different than a musical score book. :)

Sheet music - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sheet_music)

The number 23 is not referring to an album track though an album called "Ikuta-ryū sōkyoku senshū" does exist. It should be a musical score sheet.

Any news on the release of your 30th Anniv collection?

If you are meaning the 4 discs 108 tracks version the answer is this week or the other... more or less. All the latest changes (and suggestions) were incorporated so just the time to sort the last details on the covers and everything will go public.

If you were meaning the 9 discs box set... well... let's digest this whopper first then we will move to the other if you are still hungry.

Most of the material for the extra discs of the 9 discs version comes from the PAL version of the movie... which is speeded up matter of fact... as some on the 29th Anniversary anyway.
I am guessing we inevitably got it wrong from the beginning when they decided to squeeze the NTSC frames into the PAL system... but that's how we learnt to listen to the music on this side of the ocean... the correct speed and lenght is the NTSC though it still has a 25/24 pitch increase compared to the original masters. I deeply apologize for some obvious speed mistakes to all Region 1 peers.

Somehow the 29th Anniversary will be the closest attempt to a die-hard collector's dream come true with all the wealth of information most-if-not-all-blade-runner-related and the purist collectors will inevitably find that redundant.
Both will be quite pleased I am hoping. Pick up what you feel the content you were wishing.

We will do whatever in our power to stop the silly eBuy frenzy. Not-so-honest sellers be warned.

Obviously you were not meaning the 30th Anniversary edition of the movie out next November. :)

I also would like to thanks all the people whose suggestions were the most useful.
Though we could not please everyone and some obvious region 2 speed mistakes were left I appreciated that input a lot.

I intend to re-do much of the work on the 9 discs using the more accurate speed of the Blu-ray at some point... I am hoping in my lifetime if possible. What most of the Blade Runner fans were wishing will be on the 4 discs anyway.

Again, though we cannot always grasp the inner meanings of the people/artist himself designed to officially release the proper soundtrack, we are always hoping for the real deal to show up... otherwise we would not be here in the first place. ;)

Hope you will enjoy our attempt at it!

Comments :

This is the story of one half and another half and their undisputed passion for a much bootlegged soundtrack and how they came to speak to each other without ever using once their outdated mobile phones. Video phones are still too far from domestic usage though it will be the default in a not so distant future, but let’s the story begin.

There were once two most peculiar peers, one half and another half. One being as accurate as he could almost get, we will call him DC, and the other half even more perfectionist as the other would not have never thought of being and his name was Pendor. One of them used to use the latest generation of mobile phones on the market, the other is the last one to use that technology in mobile phones… and both are very… but very deaf indeed.
DC usually utilizes the latest in software & hardware technology, however Pendor is the last human being using prehistoric software & hardware, and some even claim to have seen him using a legendary Commodore 64 (but probably it is only a legend).
Another legend says that DC is more good and kind than Lassie, and Pendor also resembles to the famous TV dog (but when the dog had contracted rabies).
Also the mental health of both has been put in serious doubt (but that was many years before this project).

It is the first time that it has been used electronics specially designed for the restoration and remastering of the "Soundtrack Outtakes" precisely the "Pendor Processor BR-101", built with some very old components or as old as the age of their own preferred film (Blade Runner n.d.r.).
They both grew up with compact cassettes but later converted to the new religion of the colder digital format being disillusioned with the limitations of tape cassettes when the improvements in fidelity were clearly audible and the tradeoff much more bearable.
Two half hackers unsusceptible to repentance, not even attempting to make a charade out of a full grown one for the sake of what they seem to like best: reverse-sound-engineering their preferred soundtrack. We hope that that won’t bother you much and if it slightly pleases you they will surely appreciate.

Pendor is a most peculiar and determined peer. They say he uses the mobile as a phone only. No games to pass the time, big keys to better type SMS messages, no internet connection to receive notifications from social networks where he is pretty invisible as far as they might be concerned, neither watching movies on tiny screens or listening to music with cheap earphones. He tends to use one of that old fashioned compact disc Walkman’s quite popular in the previous century of which he is still quite fond of.
He does not like at all listening to the latest compressed and portable music formats (as it seems to be latest trend) and the word referring to it does not even exist in his vocabulary.
We do not need to know much of his whereabouts. Only thing you want to know is that he decided and settled that english language was something for rich tourists going abroad when it comes to ask directions or asking out ladies that will always say yes to everybody with green paper slips in big leather wallets.
They say he still owns a mobile from 2002 and still proud to use it. It does what it is supposed to do as far he is concerned.
DC is a most peculiar peer too, at times he has some bright idea but not so fortunate perhaps. When his old mobile phone broke (and was asked double the price for a new one just for a glimpse by the qualified and expert personnel), he immediately fancied a replacement in black and white as he always had possibly. Not much need for color graphics to dial a combination of numbers as a matter of fact.
The shop assistant only smiled quite amused at such request since she was little when she first heard the beeping of mobile phones of her mother.
Ten years ago mobile phones were completely a different world.
Black and white displays were on their way to become obsolete by then and color displays are the default standard on every phone in these days.
To cut the story short he now owns a newer generation mobile phone even if he only texts messages and calls back the numbers on his address book when he is not fiddling and messing with his computers if their planned obsolescence is not striking as thunderbolts from above and beyond on whatever he is doing, and not distracted from a tiny grab-attentions-brat who keeps stealing all his toys and asking questions on most things she cannot quite grasp the meaning yet.
He also tried to exchange his telephone number with the helpful shop assistant having overcome some difficulties of the first approach at that point, but even if she was engaged and assured her he was not a jealous guy, she never called back and he's still looking for his other half ever since, but that is another story. Would that have been the lucky chance to actually settle up we might have not heard of him at all in this story. But that's the problem with most peers: they want what they can't have and don't want what they can have.
Back to our story, we might definitely state they live on quite the opposite sides of the oceans but they learnt to communicate via online translators in that very same language used by rich tourists when going abroad.
They had the same peculiarities about mobile phones and quite a few interests to share when it was mutually settled to help each other in leaving something to the growing and ageing peers alike. Not because they wanted some not-so-honest people and their grey bussiness to flourish (eBuy), but to leave something they believe it would have been only fair for other peers to have.
What they were given they gave back, sometimes fixing it and sometimes not.
What was not given they could not possibly fix nor give back. If you help other people achieve their goals, they’ll help you achieve yours. And so it happened.
The motto of 'The 29th Anniversary Team' has been "Let everyone have access to all, rather than a few have access to a lot" which means they support enlightment rather than elite-nment, but you all know that.

DC is a most industrious-but-not-so-organized hacker working overnight. He always dreamt of starting a 29th Anniversary edition since day two when he had found out like-minded individuals sharing his same interests on some obscure and most infamous digital “plazas” a year earlier. Being a most ruthless but honest hacker he pretty stole few patents about what it might have been the proper thing to do, Donnor & 1187 Hunterwasser came definitely first; Anita & Anson were the next on the list to be notified, and a very talentuous hacker named Zyzz (with whom he keeps exchanging plans and opinions) being the last but not least on a list that started from some mysterious guys better known as the FIC Trust., Esper Team(s) Inc., Bradbury Producers, detectives in Grey Fedora hats, 2019 Makers Ltd., Off World Editors and EMS archaeologists (where he pretty made his bones).
He got permissions when asked very politely, and trying a different approach, (and also copying the different approaches on the same subject), reverse-sound-engineering after reverse-sound-engineering and several missed night sleeps he eventually (even if not finally) come out with something.

This half was not having sufficient night sleeps at the time (which should have been mandatory) and took the bad habit of fixing (making more appropriate if you like) most of the more obscure versions he was having... and since he owned nearly close to nothing (compared to what he has piled to date) the "LMS", "Ultimate" and "Tapes Collection" were conceived to fix what he was having at the time.
The trouble, as you might see, came when he started having more versions of the soundtrack and eventually proper night sleeps... By this time it emerged he was not the only one "left" in those obscure and most infamous whereabouts (FFShrine and Yahoo)... damn hackers working overtime... and lot more contrived to make the matter diverse and more complicated...

At some point he finally balanced his fragmented collection of minutes to finish this thing off and what was supposed to be only a joke of something known as 20th Anniversary turned into something different.

When asked his answer was always: “very soon”, more in the fashion of politicians when asked to do anything, but definitely more determined to honor his words compared to the formers. Would he not have kept his promises he might have become a politician with plenty of those green paper slips.

The final drafts of the masters were at some re-shipped to a different host because of the annoying Stop Online Piracy Act acts... Further changes were discussed; better sources were in some cases considered... and what was originally intended as a "parody" (for the better and no more than that really) of the original 20th Anniversary edition was finished in December 2011, and used only as a workprint for the changes needed to make it better.
Plenty of changes actually. Spare time seemed to be quite on a wish list back then, (it still is), but as it is his intention, he will see into posting that rough version during his lifetime if possible.

The 20th Anniversary was a mixture of the Off World edition and the official 1994 edition of the soundtrack without taking into account the huge difference in quality between them. On The 29th Anniversary something was done to even out the differences but they would not count on near-perfect-quality for the 29th Anniversary.
That is something residing somewhere in someone’s other drawers (and at the correct pitch too), so quality was not much an issue in its initial stage.
At least same quality of the official 25th Anniversary sources and almost-perfect-but-not-quite quality for the rest of the unreleased cues on the Off World edition and front and rear audio channels leaked from the speeded up (compared to the original NTSC) PAL movie digital versatile discs.

And that was when the other half slipped into our story.

Pendor is a most industrious and dangerous hacker too. Stubborn to the point of being right even if the other is not wrong. What one half has started this other half has seen for the better, most he has started the one half has made him changing, what the one half has changed the other half has re-made.
The other half did a terrific job in giving all the cues a more polished touch... he always had a more objective approach as a whole, while the first half got lost in the making we have to admit.
What they have re-made they have changed over time.
What it was decided in time it was inevitably changed again at the last moment.
Not an easy thing to settle up on something when both are wanting to achieve what they think it might be best thing to do but you might want to check that part of the story for yourself hopefully.
To cut the story short after months of turning round the same tails to make it as perfect as they could get they eventually settled up on something in between, the best of both worlds we might say, and what they have started it was finally finished.

He wished to add better edits of the less good sources where the EMS Team had stopped digging and things were turned into something different. Like it has happened when compiling the infamous EMS, time helped smoothing out lot of discrepancies between the sources and adding extra details by the day.
Attention to problems went to matter more than solutions to those problems.

What they ended up doing together was making what it was intended as a quick and dirty here-you-have-it-all-Blade-Runner-soundtrack-related in a single package into something better.

In a way the 29th Anniversary is the closest attempt to a die-hard collector's dream come true with all the wealth of informations most-if-not-all-blade-runner-related and the more-purist collectors will inevitably find that redundant. If both will be quite pleased (as they are hoping) they achieved their goal.

Even if it should have been released in 2011, with its official release stretching to 2012 it might have easily changed name to 30th Anniversary, but since they did most of the work in 2011 they are getting along with the original 29th Anniversary name.

After inevitably adding new edits and ideas when one half was working on the cues for The Tapes Collection, LMS, Ultimate MR2, Chinatown and EMS, time after time it grew bigger. The 29th Anniversary was actually being half of the project while the rest was the more cinematic approach of the EMS Japanese disc experiments. It was almost radically re-worked to the point that it really turned into a 30th Anniversary edition at some point, (being only for the sake of not changing also the artworks again... and the a-bit-too-obvious-hence-dangerous similarities with the new re-edition of their much loved movie...)
By sheer chance sequences of the workprint version of movie materialized... and they had to sort that out as well. Other changes were made to the trailers and the logo music... lots of changes... the proper credits were compiled, corrected and then re-compiled... it was just details and checking if they could get any better than they did after that. The important bits are eventually finished it seems... the rest will have to wait until the 30th Anniversary, (unless the composer himself will opt for a more official 30th Anniversary of which most likely us common peers might not surely or immediately grasp the inner sequenced-and-edited meaning...)

So not to generate confusion both halves agreed to post the final output first and the files originally intended for it at a later date. You won't notice much of a difference anyway... except that the original concept consisted of nine discs perhaps...
You're not that blade-runner-soundtrack-crazy are you?
Not to the point of bidding half their likely wage on a counterfeit copy on an auction we’re hoping (eBuyers). Are you?

This is where they have got so far anyway. The rest of the story is what you will be listening to if that pleases you.

DC was lastly seen in a quiet dutch coffee shop enjoying the surroundings thanks to a forged ID card… Pendor was recognized on a not so crowded beach at a world’s end with a nice view on the south pole.
They swear not to want to hear of each other after what they have been through after all these months but they are probably still bitching about most things and happy to uncover what all have been waiting for.

The last thing you want to know is that they lived happily and ate partridges!

Out of curiosity, dadadacicici, where did you find (or how did you isolate the audio track for) a crisp and clean version of James Horner's Tears in Rain written for the Workprint? Also, I have read that this was orchestrated by Jerry Goldsmith, where does James Horner's attribution come from?

On a side note, this release is a man's job, sir! I especially love the Esper Machine Noise track. Expert!

Well... not isolated really. It comes from the official soundrack of the movie it was used for and it is called Search For Clues. That is why it is so "clean"! :)

http://forums.ffshrine.org/f92/battle-beynond-stars-humanoids-deep-james-horner-86259/2.html#post1998184

I've been listening to lots of Jerry Goldsmith works especially the music on Planet Of The Apes and I just could not find anything replicated on the temp music used for Blade Runner.
I need to have a more focused mood to go through classical music this latest period (and I will surely do that in the next months)... but I could not find the bits used for Blade Runner.
I know Paul Sammons wrote that the some music on Planet Of The Apes was at some point used but I am inclined to think that Terry Rawlings or whoever handled the selections of masters to him... totally forgot about the music they have used to assemble the un-scored scenes by Vangelis that we can hear in the workprint. They just did not note down any reference source or any paper with all the credits got lost. Who knows.
Who will ever need the reference sources to a temporary score used for a cut meant to be only a workprint anyway?
The same can be said for the layers of different samples of different pieces of music all over the movie. Not all of them is Vangelis. Some we were able to id by sheer chance really... if they do not have a clue then we will not have a clue.
Simply as that.
If we get lucky to spot anything, then we are having the best of luck.
And that has happenned both with the Michio Miyagi track and the James Horner track really.

Whoever worked at the studios where Blade Runner was being assembled used the same masters they were using to assemble other movies released at the time or some time earlier by the same studio.

After the completion of Blade Runner’s principal filming in Los Angeles, in the summer of 1981, the film’s post-production phase moved to London, where it was to be assembled and sound dubbed. Film director Ridley Scott, along with his film-editor Terry Rawlings, began to put together a rough cut of the film. Rawlings began to use a temp score to put music to the images. The rough cut of the film with the temp score gave a flavour of the type of mood Scott might have wanted, and allowed them to view an assembled film put together from all the cut scenes in chronological order.
Vangelis was approached to discuss the possibility of providing the film score for Blade Runner and was invited to a private view of the film on a cinema screen at Pinewood Studios. In December 1981, after fruitful discussions, Vangelis was signed up to work on the film.

The music dubbing sessions first took place at at Pinewood Studios, but towards the end of the Blade Runner project the sessions were moved to a much smaller sound booth at Twickenham Film Studios.

The only thing we know is that the answer is to be found in the vaults of Pinewood Studios and Twickenham Film Studios.
Our luck ends there I'm afraid...

I especially love the Esper Machine Noise track. Expert!

Pendor will definitely appreciate that! Though I'm afraid we will never see him posting on the lossy thread I'll forward the compliment! ;)

The 29th Anniversary Team

When I repeatedly DRAGGED people to see Blade Runner on THE BIG SCREEN in 1982, everyone of them wanted the soundtrack. When it was announced on Entertainment Tonight that Vangelis did not plan to release it- I was going to kick in the TV screen. Since then this score has become something of a legend. Especially when I bought my first computer and etc. etc. etc. What boggles the mind is not only with an opportunity to FINALLY release the score when Scott released his FINAL CUT, Vangelis produced a 3 disc set with a 3rd disc of crap.

I can't think there has EVER been a soundtrack so beloved and so bootlegged and so magically reproduced by whatever means.

Though I am 'a bear of little brain' I succeeded in downloading this 'four disc set' and am delighted and puzzled by what I hear. Yes, it would be nice to have MORE than MP3... but for now I shall indulge in this epic production and thank wholeheartedly the little elves behind its creation.

Ermm... exactly where are you hearing the glitch? Minutes, seconds position?

Is it the one between 2:08 and 2:09 occurring when the vocals kick in again?

If it is that one I'm afraid it is in the original "Outtakes" source... and we could not possibly fix it in a pleasant way.

Sorry... The little elves miserably failed on that... :(

Yes, would be interesting to know where it is. Can't say i noticed any glitch that was worth my attention. GREAT work on this one :D will probably wear the mp3s out, before the lossless comes ;)

I just ordered soundtracks from Varese Sarabande and Intrada for Freud, Planet of the Apes, and Alien--I already have some copy of Humanoids from the Deep composed by James Horner. I am going to give them all a thorough listen and compare them to the cues heard in the BR Workprint. I'll post what I find out. It would be cool to compile a complete workprint soundtrack for this movie.

If any advice is needed... Keep posting on the forums until you get to a minimum of 6 posts so you might send a PM and I could advice on the best versions posted so far. As a rule of thumb always ask for permission to the original uploaders.

Have you tried giving a genuine Agent-Coulson-type-of-look at the BOTTON OF THE POST by any chance?

Superman is having a bad moment since he tried to have a non-consensual-intercourse with Wonder Woman at the speed of light but did not account for The Invisible Man on top of her when he shot himself against Wonder Woman sunbathing naked on the top of the Daily Planet building... The Invisible Man just felt a sudden prick on his back and Wonder Woman did not totally notice anything... but Superman... he is really feeling broken after the realization... so I'm currently stuck on my own against a Super Villian called Read-Me-First haunting Planet Earth and cannot help much, sorry...

The objective from the very beginning was to be as close as possible to the original score as heard in the film, Rothermich said. It was never a case of my interpreting the soundtrack. It was essentially a re-recording of the soundtrack music.
Judging by the samples, that hasn't gone well.

I'm wondering what Vangelis is thinking about this kind of butchering of all his efforts...

What people really needed was another New American Orchestra type of thing...

Anyone around here is willing to have a go at it with a VSTi?

Composer Edgar Rothermich was charged with reverse engineering the score listening to the original music and a 1982 album mock-up and transcribing it by ear. He also had to recreate the sound of 1982 synthesizers and decipher if noise heard was due to recording on tape or stylistic choices by the composer.

Looks like this guy did the very same things done around here. :)

I am wondering about the 1982 album mock-up though... Off World Edition? They cannot possibly state that the inspiration came from an unofficial release.

And this is only confirming that Warner and Partnership own only the rights to the music composed for the movie... but not the actual masters for the music as played by Vangelis and used for the movie...

I do hope they will sort that out eventually...

Anyway the music is way too clean on this re-recording. It lacks that kind of unpredictable behavior typical of the techniques, instruments and effects used at the time... some might like that kind of polished sound... it is properly produced as you might expect from the guys in charge... but not the cup of tea I might be still dreaming....

I'lll stick to what we already have. Period.

I think there may be one more reason why it sounds the way it does. It might be a legal problem if someone were to make a cover that sounded almost exactly the same as the original. A good example is Ed Starink, who covered a massive amount of Vangelis' material in the 90's. All of it obviously sounds completely different than the originals. But, it gets interesting if you manage to track down information about the gear he owns. If the lists I have seen some time ago on the 'net are correct, then he owns (or used to own) almost every piece of gear that was known to be used by Vangelis. Had he wanted to, he probably could have made exact re-recordings with the same instruments (like Jarre did with oxygene recently), but he probably wasn't allowed to do so by his record company's legal department.

dadadacicici
09-06-2012, 07:49 PM
Once you pay for the rights to use the score of some music then it is up to you deciding if you want to clone it or not... which was not the point with what Edgar Rothermich did.
A musician will always try to play his music, not to clone someone's else efforts.

We might be a little obsessed with the original performance to spot anything good on whatever attempting to touch the Mona Lisa smile perhaps... but that's not the point with what Edgar Rothermich wanted to achieve.
A take on his favourite music. And perhaps he did a good job on that.

Frank Klepacki did way better job speaking of depthness with the gear he was having... but this is a personal opinion.
I wonder if it was him to be approached to do that... but people change with time and he would not probably be interested...

Ed Starink had always a colder approach on what he was doing.
Some people like his renditions of Jean Michel Jarre tracks more than the originals... but again that is personal tastes. I prefer the originals.

If you're a fan of film music and have collected soundtracks over the years, chances are you have a copy (or five) of BLADE RUNNER (1982) in your collection.

Chances are that we are having more than 5 matter of fact... :)

Rothermich reversed engineered the synth programming and faithfully recreated (miraculously I might add) the original score tracks as heard in the film.

Not that faithfully I'm afraid... but I might as well leave that up to everybody's tastes. I tend to agree with Sinus though. ;)

So.... whatcha think?

Well. I must admit that initially I was not that happy with how the 30th Anniversary rendition was sounding, but it went quite smooth on the CD player and I had to play it again... and then again and again, so it grew on me like I would have never expected since my first hate/approach to it.
I must confess that I like it though it is not what I was expecting, but once you keep expecting the original you end getting disappointed at everyone trying to approach that perfection. Some tracks are better arranged than others but overall it is quite an enjoyable experience.

Let's give it 8 out of 10 for the very nice try. Now the originals please! :)

Oh, by the way. It is being shipped starting from today if you have pre-ordered it... so let's hope in something even better than the previous edition this time... though an isolated score track was not even mentioned on the release notes.
