Everyone complaining about the Salvation link is right. The URL isn't the problem I didn't copy "part 1" when you get to the capatcha it sends you right back to the screen and asks you to enter it again. I don't have this problem with the second link.

Hey pietastesgood and orange. Just wanted to say thanks so much for Terminator Salvation. I'm really enjoying this score!!! I enjoyed Danny Elfman's score to the movie, but if I was McG, I would give would serious consideration to use these guys in the next movie. The score has various versions of Fidel's original theme, which I love, and any true Terminator fan loves, which was sadly missing mostly through out the movie, and the official movie score!!! Sadly these guys will most likely be looked over :-( Oh well, thanks again VGM Legacy!!!

Ok, here's the next in my chronological PSP rip series. Heads up, here comes a 430MB rip.
This one was quite hard to rip:
- all files stored in one big archive -> manual extraction via hex editor
- songs were ADPCM-compressed .VAG files with an 800 byte interleave (had to find out first)
- all songs had to be looped with undetermined looping points (phew...)
Slowly I'm getting better with these rips... ;)

Those XBOX 360 versions of Call Of Duty games. How in the fuck the quality is better than the PC versions? I'm 99% sure that what is in the PC versions is exactly same as in XBOX 360 versions. I don't see any logical reason to put lower quality of music in PC versions. The biggest difference between console or PC version is usually the interface and the controller/keyboard+mouse.

Maybe sometimes you will hear here and there a difference but not in general.
Anyway we release only high quality rips and the x360 has the higherst quality for now - the ps3 could have more quality. Who knows - The discs are still encrypted.

Why better quality - there are two good reasons:
1.) the size - compare cod2 PC to cod2 Xbox360 ;) - x360 games uses always a full dvd9 - Examples: cod games - lego games (x360 has always multichannel 5.1 tracks - PC simple stereo)

2.) They can use smaller not high end textures because the hardware and power is limited - therefore they can use the space for the music/sfx/videos

That's right. Most of the people won't hear the difference between the mp3 128kbit and the CD quality. Even when you use headphones and descent stereos, even then you got to concentrate to be able to hear it.

I know and I'm not saying anything. I just don't see the logic in here why developers would do this. It's not like you can't release dvd9 for PC (like CoD4 is on Dual Layer dvd). Also, nothing requires you to use dvd9 specifically for x360. It's not a problem to release games for x360 on a Single Layer DVDs. So that's not an explanation for me, that's simply more work there in my opinion. Besides how many have 5.1 for their second TV? Exactly, not so many. Actually, not that many have 5.1 for that single TV or monitor or whatever. This is all optional, optional to chose the output from the game options. I think CoD World at War has this kind of option, not sure.

Edit: What are these TEMP versions on CoD2 x360? I can't find them on PC version. I'm confused, wish I knew how the fuck open x360 games to take a look myself...

Well all x360 games have dvd9 - dont know why - even the oldest discs.
Have not found a retail dvd with a single layer
Maybe they want to save expenses with the pc versions - dont ask me.
Anyway therefore in general better quality - they have simple more space for music and especially 48hz needs much more space.

The x360 has more tracks. These tracks (Temp versions) are variations of the original tracks - you will not find more tracks in the pc version ;)

Hello Kataah

First of all, sorry for my poor English, i'm not a native speaker and I'd like to thank you and the team for the great rips.

To get to the point, something was bothering me about your rips and i have some suggestions regarding quality.

I noticed that you're using and old outdated vorbis encoder (from 2003), i think if you absolutely want the maximum quality, you should update to the latest ogg vorbis encoder, preferably the one with aoTuV's tunnings.

You can get it from rarewares.org (in ogg section, there is a commandline encoder, dll's for your apps, and even a simple drag'n'drop app. (oggdropXPd) - i recommend the last one)
There have been major quality related bug fixes & tunnings in the encoder since 2003.

also using ~400 something kbps is overkill and a waste of space, above ~256kbps (q 8.00) there won't be any quality improvements/difference.
Such high bitrates are intended for multichannel (5.1) and/or high sample rate
(above 48khz) sources.

Another thing, if the source is already mp3/ogg and no edits are required, you should not reencode them, instead leave them as is, because transcoding to a lossy format lowers quality even, if you use maximum bitrate (which will only increase file size).
Like in Assassin's Creed rip, there where tracks that didn't need looping / editing, they should have been left untouched. (original quality & smaller file size)

And to the Mp3 vs Ogg matter, Ogg is not better than mp3, it was made to be an opensource/free alternative to mp3 (with multichannel & arbitrary sample rate support),
and the only advantage over mp3 comes out at lowet bitrates ~96-128kbit.
At hihger bitrates they are the same. (compared to the latest LAME encoder ofcourse)
Also you should consider using MP4/AAC the successor of MP3, i recommend Apple's Quicktime/Itunes solution or Nero's free commandline encoder, both offer great quality.

Okay have not known that the new version has quality improvements - have thought the quality is still the same.
I used dBpowerAMP Music Converter with an ogg plugin before and for multichannal files, of course the newerst oggdropXPd but okay i will test it for stereo files too.

also using ~400 something kbps is overkill and a waste of space, above ~256kbps (q 8.00) there won't be any quality improvements/difference.

There are reasons why we use -q10 oggs. Its not about quality - you will not hear the differences to -q8 of course. Following - Mp3 is still a more common codec - there are many mp3 players but only a few can play oggs. I cannot check this but i have read that -q10 do not deviate more than 1% from the lossless signal - there was a comparisons on the hydrogenaudio forum back then. Anyway if you have -q10 oggs which are nearly lossless but half as big as flac - then its good for converting to another codec without noticable artifacts. Yeah i know even -q9 is okay to do that too - ideology - maximum quality ;)

Of course we have flac versions for people who have enough space too - example Cod5 - has over 1,8gb as falc version ;)

Unedited tracks in mp3/ogg will not be touched if you dont believe it - download "Agatha Christie - Peril at End House" - track 03.
Creed was special - the headers were not given directly - i had to add the headers from another file - many people had problems to play these tracks - therefore i decided to reencode these tracks - i was not happy with that but i had no other choice. By the way therefore i have still the wavs - maybe i will do a flac version someday ;)

Ogg has multichannel support (another reason for ogg). Of course MP4/AAC is a good codec but no, i want only one codec for all scenarios - mp3 has no multichannel support and many games uses now 5.1 music - therefore its generally outdated. Many games have oggs as codec (nearly all ut3 engine games) - i can say that 70-80% of all games who i have ripped last year had ogg as codec and if i dont need the edit these tracks then i dont need to touch it. If a game use MP4/AAC as codec then i wouldnt reencode it but to use this codec as standard - no there are no advantages

bye

p.s i speak only for myself. OrangeC, Alpha23 and pietastesgood could have a different opinion ;)

Hello Kataah. I always convert ogg/flac files to mp3 320 kb/s (because it's a more popular format) and when I convert files, some of them, for example, the first track from Call Of Duty: Finest Hour (01 - PS2_2S1RWS_01.ogg) gets at 160 kb/s instead of the wanted 320 kb/s CBR. Is there any reason why is that hapening? I use Xrecode 2.6, freeware...
Anyway, thanks a lot for all the great quality rips!
Bye

Ok, i see your point, but why preserve something that no one can hear.
(or doesn't exist because the source is lossy too)
My problem is that the rips are too big for me, so what can i do reencode them? Then the quality might suffer (because of repeated encoding).

I'am not so sure about 1% difference in q10, because regardless of the bitrate,
lossy transformations & psycho accoustics are always applied,
quantisation noise (32bit-16bit dithering) is discarded i think,
so the difference must be bigger, but i might be wrong.

Anyway something else came to my mind. When you reencode from ogg/mp3/aac/xma, you should decode to 32bit float wavs, because these codecs work internally in 32bit floating point domain, and decoding to 16bit adds white noise, because of dithering.
If you're not sure that your app. does the conversion in 32bit float, you should consider, decoding (Foobar2000 decodes mp3/ogg to 32bit float internally) using intermediate wav files, and encode them separately.
(well except for wma/xma, it depends on the decoder if it's willing to output 32bit files)

I absolutely agree with this, and all of your other points, any work on any type of audio file, whether it be fade-in/out, cross-fading, looping etc should be performed in non-destructive 32-bit float.

If the downloads are too big then don't download - simple ;)

@GameMusicAddict
Look to paranaoestragar - Thats what i mean. Its not about hearing its about reconverting to another codec therefore the higherst quality. Then you can be sure that you "reduce" artifacts if you want to reconvert a score. Of course lossless is always the best source and i will convert all edited scores to lossless too maybe somedays but not now - it is still to big.

The source is mainly lossy - console games have almost always their own codecs - modern Pc games mainly ogg somtimes voxware, mp3 and other more special adpcm codecs.

Well i am not sure about that 1% too but well i have read the comparisons
and i trust the hydrogenaudio people ;)

Thx for 32bit float hint - will try it :)

@paranaoestragar
The score has only 22050 Hz - its not possible to use 320kb/s for such a sampling rate. Only a few tracks are in 44Hz (like the second track)
Thats all given by the game ;)

thx protium for the kind words - yeah ripping is enormous time intensive. Some games are really hard to rip and you need sometimes weeks if you have for example over 1000 small track segments. If it wouldnt our hobby then we wouldnt do that.

I'm sorry, i didn't want to criticize anybody or anything,
and i'm also grateful for the work they do.
I'm just suggesting things, that can make quality even higher.
I'm trying to help.
These conversions can be automated/batched, so they don't need that much extra work.

06-07-2009, 07:09 PM
Well, to me it's like an statement.

Because I didn't saw anyone having problems with methods or whatever. Yeah people rip things differently whatever. People also wonder why someone rips things this way or encodes tracks in to that format. Why these things can't be discussed? Or do you think that that post had random timing or something?

If you guys do then want to discuss ripping and what codec sounds better than another codec, isn't it easier to start a new thread, let the flaming begin and leave this thread for OrangeC and Kataah's game rips.

The thread does say VGM Legacy after all, it doesn't say '101 Ways To Rip Your Music'.

I've posted this as a separate thread in the Requests section to be proper, but since this is the den of the score hunters around here, I figured I'd link in here as well.

Basically, I'm looking for a game rip of the new Prototype game's score it's by Cris Velasco and Sascha Dikiciyan (of Jericho, Hellgate London, etc). My request thread is here:

I'll have to re-release some of my rips here, because there's exactly one track missing: the icon music (which plays when you select the game on your PSP).
Else, I will release the next rips in North American release order, which means that I've ripped some games too early, so now everything is just mixed up.
For this purpose I've created a new thread called PSP Frenzy (Thread 66726), where I'll release MP3 versions of my rips and provide links to my VGMLegacy releases (which of course stay in OGG high quality).

So, as there's already much confusion, I just provide you with another out-of-the-timeline rip: Dynasty Warriors! This one has a nice metal score. I guess that these are just short versions of the PC and PS2 release.

Hey pie, if FEAR is unrippable, how come I have ripped it? ;) It's the PC version though. 321 Tracks, 02:12:53.
You could request it in my thread if you like, phenomangel!

Wait, I have a PS2/PSP combo rip of The Force Unleashed in FLAC.

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=1ENR7Z2B

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=XR3ODW6R

It's got nowhere near the variation of JW cues that the PS3/XBox360 versions have, but it does contain all of TFU's cues (although some are altered). It's VERY BIG in size, about 1.9GB (being in FLAC because we use it for Star Wars ST editing)

nice work alpha ;)

@phenomangel

Fear and Fear 2 are rippable (PC Versions) but its not important which version you rip. PC and x360 versions are equal - same with Creed and many other games - If you think that x360 games are differ to PC games then you think wrong. Most games are equal (PC/X360/PS3).

Force Unleashed can be ripped but not now - have to study a little more the xma header. Halo 3 is very hard to rip - Tracks are completely headerless and mixed with data - very hard one.

Fallout 3, Gears Of War, Res5, Creed are ripped

PS3 games are still unrippable - discs are encrypted - no way to decrypt the data.

Alpha23, Kattah, thanks for your help. I love people who are so helpful.

Another question. I know iTunes has ALAC (Apple Lossless Audio Codec), but can FLAC or ogg files be put on there? I'd like to put them on my iPod. I think a lot of audio formats are automatically converted into mp3 (there must be an option somewhere). I'm guessing there's also an option to get iTunes to accept ogg files. You know when you first install a media program, you ave an option for it to play certain formats and you check te formats you want it to play (Example: for WMP, it can play avi, mp4, etc because you gave it te option to or you haven't given it the option to not be able to play those , something like that)

on te off chance i cant do tis i guess i can burn the music & when i import it, it will automatically be converted into mp3 if it wasnt when i dragged it into iTunes the first time

ggctuk2005, you said

what do you mean by this???

pietastesgood
06-17-2009, 03:11 PM
I thought that FEAR 1 and 2 from the 360 would be unrippable since Monolith games use some compressed archive on the 360, I guess they're an exception.

Assassin's Creed uses the Scimtar engine and believe me, that is crap to get music out of.

Halo 3 is compressed.

Force unleashed has a bad header.

Hope this clears things up.

While all of the Mark Griskey cues (composed specifically for the game) are present, the PS2/Wii/PSP versions do not use as much of the John Williams material as the PS3/XBox360 versions... and to somebody like me that's the real gem.

You can download and install XiphQT (google search). It's a quicktime component that will allow you to play ogg and flac files in itunes (flacs didn't work on me). Yet you wont be able to put them on your ipod as it does not support such formats. To listen them at your ipod you will have to convert them to a ipod compatible format (wich means, in the case of ogg files, that you will loose quality).

06-18-2009, 06:38 AM
Hey phenomangel, regarding your iTunes question: why don't you just RTFM? ;)
Just a tip: You can decode the FLAC and OGG files back to WAV (download the FLAC encoder and an OGG decoder; even winLAME can do this) and re-convert them with ALAC. Shouldn't be too hard to do.

Ok, that's how I'll rip the PSP games: I will only continue to rip chronologically, if no one requests anything in PSP Frenzy. Otherwise, I'll provide VGMLegacy with the current PSP rip in maximim OGG quality! =)

Here's the first request. In my opinion, this is some really cool stuff! =) What do you think? BTW: Does anyone know, who composed this nice soundtrack?

O_o, now that's some really interesting news! For reasons of curiousness, I'll rip that until tomorrow or so. Or has anyone already done that one?

@ pie: thanks for the stuff, really amazing how many rips you process at once!!!

Else, I've downloaded "Resistance Retribution" a while ago because Garry Schyman composed the music. To my surprise (and also consternation ;) ) I noticed 24 packed music files containing up to 150 segments, of which no file scanner can find all of them, so I would have extract them manually, which is no option. Gladfully, I know someone with programming skills and he's able to write me a little extraction program with Java at the weekend! Thanks in advance, Thomas! =)
However, the score is great, so you can expect to have an upload ready at the end of this weekend!

Sadly enough not many people seem to be interested in my PSP rips, given the download numbers... :-\ But I don't blame you - pie, orange and kataah really shower us in amazing rips! =)

And I look forward to a Resistance: Retribution rip ;)
I started yesterday and I have to say, the result is sobering so far... just mixing together the segmensts of one track actually took me more than 1h and there are 24 tracks with which to do this. Else, there are other tracks within the mixed track, which sometimes just don't fit together and I expect parts of the tracks to be inside other segment files. THIS IS SO GODDAMN HARD, I WANT TO PUKE!!! I was so frustrated yesterday that I ripped Spider-Man 2, Ape Escape and Dynasty Warriors successively and I'lll upload the latter two later on.
But well, I've started Resistance Retribution now and I'll try to finish it, which noone till now had the patience to.

O_o, now that's some really interesting news! For reasons of curiousness, I'll rip that until tomorrow or so. Or has anyone already done that one?

I just went to confirm it and it's just as I said. It's the menu music and the sound of the profile data file, when we check it on the psp menu. At least that's true for the european version of the game. I think that if we exclude the licensed music (from Cold Storage, Paul Hartnoll, etc...), the "BOOT 02" music is the only non-licensed, as far as I can remember. I don't know if it has been ripped already...
Thank you for everything! ;)

Well, turn on your PS3, open the game that you want to rip, turn off the sfx and voices and stuff, restart the game. Using red and white cables or something connect your PS3 to your PC, but I am not too sure about that, you must ask orange for clarification.

Riiightt...
Well, i have all the leads needed to make the music work? xD on the TV... so, i have ONE lead in the TV, coz i'm talking sega saturn atm, dunno if it's the scart lead that does the sound?.. eh, anyway... the TV makes noise ._. that's all i know, so i then stick this ONE "male-to-male" black long lead into the back of the TV which is where u'd put headphones, and then i put the lead in the soundcard, forget which port, green i think x] don't remember...

But i AM just using one leaddd >>
And i didn't know if that was doing anything?
Because i'm pretty sure my sound was all in stereo, and sounded find... and there AREN'T any white and red leads xD

For new consoles yes, but for this ^ no...

I already did this once but forgot one little song. So I decided to do a re-rip and release it in HQ OGG!
This one is a great Sonic Mayhem score!!

You gotta make sure your red and white jacks from the cinsole go into the pc somehwere, like through an extender or if your sound card has red and white inputs itself like a frontboard.

my pc doesnt have anything like that. cant i just use the headphone jack instead? or something like that? i have the jack you were talking about but, im still a lil confused....

and thx alpha23! the battlezone rip rocks!!

Unless you've got an extremely high quality, shielded sound card and very good audio cables, don't bother with trying a line-in rip. It will be extremely noisy, unless you're doing it with toslink optical cables. Analog audio is an extremely iffy proposition, particularly with the less-than-spectacular outputs of most consoles.

Hi! I apprechiate the hard work you do and especially love your Terminator Salvation gamerip. Unfortunately, the rip is down and I need to re-download it. I read your policy about not taking ripping requests, but I found nothing about re-up request in your first post. So I kindly ask if it would be possible to reup this one. Thanks for your help :)

I ripped this one out of curiosity if the Boot track here is the same as in Dynasty Warriors - and indeed it is.
I'll leave these boot files out in the future. If someone wants them badly, just post and I'll upload them. But they are the same in many games.

Wipeout Pure has licensed music which in some cases was exclusively mixed for this game.

ENJOY! =)
