Other good arcade-to-C64-conversion soundtracks are: Afterburner, Altered Beast, Bionic Commando, Bubble Bobble, Ghouls 'n Ghosts, Golden Axe, Green Beret, LED Storm/Mad Gear, Salamander, Sky Shark, Wonderboy in Monsterland.
I also really like Black Tiger, Dragon Ninja, Final Fight, Flying Shark, Ikari Warriors, Ninja Spirit, Shinobi, Street Fighter II, and The Ninja Warriors, however these are not available in nx666's collection yet.
Sounds good! After Burner, Altered Beast, Golden Axe, interest me.

I would recommend checking out Bionic Commando and Ghouls 'n Ghosts as well, both by Tim Follin. Especially GnG shows how far he could push the SID chip.

AudioPanicRoom - Episode #039: Game Music History ~1990~
A double-length episode featuring game music from 1990. This was the year the SNES was released in Japan, the Amiga reached its peak in Europe, and the MT-32 became the go-to device for many PC soundtracks. The playlist is supposed to reflect the very diverse gaming market of that era and is ordered roughly by release date.

Great playlist, both quantity and quality in the selection! Even right down to Bubble Ghost. :) If anything, it could have had some more Game Boy tunes, as the GB was really starting to flourish in '90 with tons of good titles coming out, but it's still good. Nice to see the continuance of the year-theme as well, has been a while now since the 1989 episode.
Good work! Will check the YouTube version when I get a chance tomorrow.

I was trying to create a playlist that actually reflects the gaming market of that year and not just put together a list with my favorite tracks. To make this somewhat objective I first had a look at various game sites/archives to get an estimate for the number of games that were released for each system that year. Based on that I calculated 'budgets' for each platform and then picked the tracks according to that. At the end there were 3 or so spots remaining that I filled with a few personal favorites. I also had to make a few concessions here and there: for example, the Amiga and Atari ST libraries are very similar so these two systems had to share a budget, or there were only a handful of SNES releases, but because it was a brand new major console I had to reserve a couple of spots for that as well.

Silver Ghost doesn't seem to have credits, just a small ending scene. All the other KSK games from that era were composed by Masaki Sasaki so it might have been him but I wasn't able to find anything to support that.

Mariner's Tale is a fairly well-known track from this demo (
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6fkqmEgeAAE), as far as I know its an original piece by Rage. I only found out about Motley Tetris when I tagged the Nibbly'92 soundtrack because that's where all the other tracks were taken from. Both of these games were coded by the same people so maybe they just re-purposed the DRAX tunes and added Mariner's Tale because they liked it. Can't fault them on that one.

I'll post this soundtrack with the next update, it's not my rip though. The OPNA version is actually the later PC-9821 release and is pretty much identical with the OPN original. From what I remember, there are only a handful of tracks that use one(!) additional FM channel.

All these games require a lot of manual work/research which isn't something that I have time for right now. There is a post on the previous page that describes what I can currently commit to.

Thanks for the update! Some good stuff this time. For those who haven't heard it yet, I can really recommend checking out Vimana, it's a great soundtrack.
I have a new PC-98 request by the way:
Xak 3: The Eternal Reccurence - both the OPN and SC-55 versions if possible, but if this would be too time-consuming, only the OPN version will suffice.

AudioPanicRoom - Episode #041: Dr.Awesome
Bjrn Lynne aka Dr.Awesome is a Norwegian composer who started his career as a member of the demo group Crusaders and went on to compose the soundtracks for a number of games on Amiga and PC. His style draws influences from genres like electronic prog, synth rock, and ambient, creating soundscapes that were pretty unique for that era of video games.

There are no sound files for Spelunker (that I know of) so I would have to extract the music myself which is always a huge manual effort. Star Cruiser will be included in one of the next updates.

I had a look at the 3DO version of DL1 back when I did the Stephane Picq episode of my podcast. From what I remember, the sound files were all pretty short, low quality, and had to be looped manually in an editor. The only longer themes are the intro and ending, but those are baked into the videos so it might not be possible to get them without sfx. All in all, it looked like a lot of work with very little return so I didn't bother with it. I don't know if the DOS version uses different audio formats though and I never looked into DL2 either.

Could you upload some more tracks from the company known as D.O.? They have some good music in their "games". They have one RPG for the PC98, I don't know what it is called, but it uses GS Midi, as well as MT32 and OPN. I also have one MSX/MSX2 request: Campaign ban Daisenryaku 2, which is a game from System Soft but reprogrammed for the MSX by Micro Cabin.

Good job! I never really got a lot of requests for DOS games so what you see in the OP is mostly stuff I wanted for my own collection and wasn't able to find elsewhere. That's also why I never bothered to do the more popular games, if there is already a decent rip available then I would rather spend my time on something else. Btw, there is a vgm archive (

- Gaia no Monshou (NEC PC-88; this game's music was done by Kouji Hayama and the GOBLIN SOUND team. Bit of trivia: Not sure if the track is in this version, but the title theme in the PC Engine version would later be reused and rearragned as the title theme for Gaiflame for the PC Engine).

I had a look at this game: it's possible to extract all the audio but there is a ton of speech and sfx as well, so you would have to sift through hundreds of files in order to find the ones that contain music. This is further compounded by the fact that the game uses its own sound format so importing the files into an audio editor seems to be the only way to listen to them.
I could give you some pointers on how to extract the sound files and make them playable in Audacity though - in case you want to give it a shot yourself.

Here is the archive with all the resource files. (
https://mega.nz/#!2U523arZ!lJaYoZUbPwv4pSLUYjBv-zjszRTvOLJh4Swh7exnbFs) I also included a command line tool that can be used to extract the data from these archives. After the extraction, sound files will typically have 'WAVE' as part of their filename. The syntax for this process is:
extract_mowhawk --raw filename.mhk
Most of the sound files seem to be standard 8-bit PCM with sample rates of either 22050 or 11025 Hz. You can get the exact rate by opening the file in a Hex editor, it is a two-byte value stored in the header at 14-15h. There are also a few sound files that are using some kind of ADPCM variant, but I didn't investigate this further. The tool above comes from the ScummVM project so maybe someone on that forum would be able to help you with that.

Thank you so much for the files, though it looks like I will need those pointers you mentioned. Unfortunately, my ripping/conversion skills are remedial at best. If not for the JoshW archive providing raw files and vgmstream, I wouldn't even get anywhere. I got the .bin files from the .MHK files, but that is where my know-how ends. Is there another program you use in the process (if I did it right at all)?

When I looked into this, I simply imported the files as raw audio into Audacity using the parameters above. For a conversion to .wav you could use Sox, here is an example for the file found at \CP\CREDITS.MHK
extract_mohawk --raw CREDITS.RAW
This should net you a ton of .bin files, you can delete anything that doesn't have 'tWAV' as part of the file name. Then use Sox to convert to .wav, for example (this is one of the ADPCM files):
sox -t ima -e ima -r 22050 -c 1 0156_00_tWAV_1000.bin 0156_00_tWAV_1000.wav
For the conversion of ADPCM data you will get a warning because Sox tries to interpret the header information as ADPCM data which also affects the quality of the output file. I haven't tried to figure out how exactly these headers work, but removing the first 32 bytes from the file (with a Hex editor) seemed to do the trick.

LOL. I'm an ancient lurker here. Registered for all the juicy links. Haven't really needed to post anything until now. Thanks for Cotton.
Now that I've broken my ten years of quiet solitude, I figure I might as well ask for another one: think you might be able to do Hellhound on the X68000? Simon B had this a long time ago in his shooter music thread, but I can't find any working links now.

Are you still on any of my unfinished requests? If not, try updating all three Garou Densetsu/Fatal Fury X68000 ones with internal sound source music. Double-check.
Thank you.

Maybe pick one as I might not have the time to do all three of them in the near future. You still have one other request open (Steam-Heart's) but I currently don't have access to my MIDI synths so that one will have to wait. There was another MIDI soundtrack that someone else (Sharrif?) requested that I couldn't do (yet) for the same reason.

I got two new requests for you. Now I know you did two PC Engine CD soundtracks, but not many video game console soundtracks. I was hoping to request these to ruiner, but since he stopped taking requests, I was wondering if you can do these PC Engine soundtracks for me, as these have some of the best tracks that GOBLIN SOUND has done for that system.

If I do these two for you then everybody else will come and (rightfully) ask why I'm not doing console soundtracks for them as well (i.e. the floodgates are open). However, it's pretty easy to create basic PC Engine rips so if you (or anybody else) wants to give it a shot then I can certainly help you with this.

I never heard of other games from Frederic Mentzen except for Asterix for the SNES. I am trying to find a way to rip the instruments from Asterix on the SNES to make renditions of songs that are already composed using FL Studio. By the way, could you make a seperate list for all of the SHMUPS for the X68000, PC-88, PC-98 and other Japanese computers?

There is a free VSTi (
http://picopicose.com/software.html) (works with FL) that emulates the SNES sound hardware. It can also load SPC files (and their instruments) directly.

Why me? Do you think I have too much time on my hands :) I'll happily add a column for 'genre' to the OP though, provided that somebody else does the research.

i recognize his name, i think from Alone in the Dark 2. according to Moby Games he scored all three games, but the versions i have have a different composer for each one. based on the different styles between the soundtracks, i'm guessing Moby Games are wrong on this one.

AitD 1 had two versions: the original Adlib soundtrack by Philippe Vachey, and the later CD release with music by Frdric Mentzen. Speaking of Mentzen: I need to upload his soundtrack for the CDTV version of Sim City at some point, there are some pretty hilarious tracks (

Never mind. Just forget everything I have ever said. I am not going to request anything anymore. I don't want to get in the way of your busy schedule. As for the VSTi plug in, it works quite well- I have it for my FL Studio. Only problem is that it can only load ONE SPC file at a time leaving some instruments out.
I am not being cruel and evil and devious by doing this, I just want you to have more time for you to get things done. Like you, I too have a busy schedule.

AudioPanicRoom - Episode #043: Wolf Team
Wolf Team was a Japanese developer that was initially formed as subsidiary of Telenet, spent a few years as an independent studio, and was later reintegrated into Telenet again. During that time they created an incredible diverse catalog of games, featuring over 50 releases in many different genres. And while their games were often just shy of something great, they are highly regarded for their excellent music, composed by a talented sound team around Motoi Sakuraba.

I have a new request: Final Crisis for PC-88. Despite having explored PC-88 for a few years, I only recently discovered this game. It's a space shooter released pretty late in the system's history (1991), and it's quite advanced for the platform with some very fast and intense action in the later levels (almost proto-bullet hell-ish). I had a look at this before and I'm afraid this is probably too much manual work for now. The Amiga port actually doesn't use iMuse, i.e. the soundtrack consists of non-interactive, looping tracks. This should make a simple rip possible but all the music would have to be extracted manually (no idea what music driver they were using) and there is a lot of data as well (10+ floppy disks iirc).

AudioPanicRoom - Episode #044: Pan Flute Heroes
While often derided for its shallow trial-and-error gameplay, the release of Shadow of the Beast proved to be hugely influential in the Amiga gaming scene. It's atmospheric score, featuring a mix of pan flute, synth pad, bass, and percussion, became a popular template for many games to come, eventually creating its own sub-genre of Amiga music.

I used Hoot, which also has the slower version of the music. The VGM release was probably logged with MAME so either the emulation is a bit too fast or there are multiple versions of this board that run at different speeds. Btw, Gang Wars seems to have the same problem.

I'm not working on Spelunker and I currently don't have access to my MIDI devices either. I can do Gamma Planet though, at least the FM version, but I don't think this game even has a MIDI option.

I don't think there is a way to get a truly lossless version of the soundtrack unless you contact the composer. I had a look at the Windows version of this game which uses ADPCM audio and that's probably what all the rips are based on. And some of the music seems to be embedded into video streams, so that's probably not lossless either.

Okay, replace Black Heart with Kaiser Knuckle. The CD release is the soundtrack before being used in the arcade and would have been like RayForce, have its Saturn version use the CD album soundtrack. General's Theme is one example different on PCB than CD release.

According to Microsoft's website,
"Adaptive Differential Pulse Code Modulation (ADPCM) is a lossy compression format that is implemented for XAudio2 to provide additional features for specifying the size of the compression sample block."

I doubt he would be interested given the many years since then. I thought ADPCM was lossless? I may be wrong on that.
I had a closer look today, from what I can tell most of the audio files are 22050 kHz ADPCM (and yes, that's a form of mathematical compression). Some of the music is embedded in AVI files that seem to use at least two different audio codecs. There is actually an implementation of a codec called PCM_ZORK in ffmpeg that can extract the music but it results in distorted audio in some of the files (like the credits video). That's why I think there are at least two variants of this format which are only partially supported. It looks like the SCUMMVM project ran into the same problem (
https://bugs.scummvm.org/ticket/6808#no2) at some point.

As the person who is doing all the work here, I'd really appreciate if you could do these sort of comparisons yourself. You can easily find videos of both versions on Youtube, and I'd rather use what little time I have for new rips. It's also very unlikely that I would be able to do an FM-based Towns soundtrack anyway, as those usually require a lot of manual work.
Btw, you can download Ku2 Comical X68000 from the OP, and ruiner has a rip of the Serious mode.

You can download Dune II from this site (

http://www.midimusicadventures.com/queststudios/).
The problem with the Fire Hawk rips is that they were made using the sound test which plays the stage and boss themes as a single track without loop. For the podcast I actually recorded a midi file from the second stage of the game which doesn't have that problem.

So there are no boss themes in the MT-32 version? Great. No wonder why I like the Japanese version more.
Thanks! :D I am trying to find more MT-32 music, but the bad news is that most of the games that used MT-32 support are ALL made by American software houses. However, there are a very small amount of American game developers that work wonders with the MT-32. Some, like Lucasarts, do a terrible job since for example, the cartoony music used in Sam and Max and in Day of the Tentacle, it uses jazzy cartoon music and it is simply not good or sound very well with the MT-32.
So, basically, even though I have said this before, I feel that the Japanese do a much better job in utilizing the MT-32's sound capabilities.

No, there are boss themes in the DOS port, that soundtrack is exactly the same as the other versions. It's just that the sound test plays stage theme and the corresponding boss music as one track, and unfortunately that's what all these rips are based on. I've never seen an in-game recording of this game.
I have to somewhat disagree on the LucasArts soundtracks though, I think from Loom onward they all had pretty awesome music. And, if I remember correctly, Sam & Max was their first soundtrack composed with General MIDI in mind so the MT-32 version is probably not the reference implementation for that one.

Ah, I see. Hopefully VGMRips might get right onto ripping the music from Thexder II: Fire Hawk for DOS soon. Well, that's your opinion and I respect that. I just don't like the cartoony games that use MT-32 because they sound poor as hell compared to how well and dramatic Frank Klepacki composed Dune II. I just listened to them and I find these games: Monkey Island II, Overtake, Span of Dream, Gemini Wing, Team Suzuki, Phalanx, Ski or Die, Hioden II Dash, Police Quest 3, Quest for Glory IV, D: European Mirage, and King's Quest V to be the best prime examples of the MT-32's greatness. Truly, you have picked some great ones! :D

Thank you for Image Fight.
I've been playing through the Crimson series of RPGs on the PC-88 and despite of the very clunky gameplay I've grown quite fond of their music. I would like to request the soundtracks for Crimson 1, 2, and 3 on the PC-88. The first one is OPN, the other two are OPNA (I think).

It's been a while, but I've got some requests for you.
- Switchblade (Atari ST; couldn't resist another version of the awesome Daglish soundtrack)
- Tetris (ZX Spectrum; the music sounds so much better on the Specky, IMO)
- Youma Korin (MSX; has some of the best music, but a shame it came from such a boring game)

IIRC the CD32 music was originally arranged for the DOS port of this game. It's easily one of my favorite versions of this soundtrack, if only there was more space on the CD to make the tracks a bit longer though.

AudioPanicRoom - Episode #046: Thomas Detert
Thomas Detert was a founding member of the demo group X-Ample that became a fairly prolific C64 game developer during the early 1990s. Most of the games he worked on were published on disk magazines and therefore tended to fly under the radar. This didn't prevent him from becoming a fairly respected composer of the late C64 years though, with a signature style that combines Galway-esque anthems and funky Maniacs of Noise grooves.

Great work, both the episode and the update! Detert is one of my favorite C64 composers, nice to see him get this recognition. His stuff often has a hypnotic and trance-like vibe, especially the longer, more elaborate pieces. The main theme to Gordian Tomb is one of my favorite C64 themes ever, so mesmerizing... and 32 minutes looped once, the real deal, ha ha. Nice to see Parsec in the update as well.
Do you know if he composed soundtracks on any other platform than the C64? It seems he only stuck to that one.

I actually had to edit a few tracks to make them a bit shorter, otherwise I would have ended up with a playlist of 5 songs. After the C64 he only did a few Adlib soundtracks (like Stone Age which you can get from the OP) and then became a producer. This was one of his projects (
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=saD6JX_YyHM) (he is the guy in red) and this is another one (
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=usoY4CdVFoY) - very 90s.
Edit: He also seems to have been involved with some of the PSX games developed by X-ample like this one (

Haha, great find! And yes, as you pointed out, very 90s. :) Well, I guess becoming a eurodance producer could be seen as a natural career step for a German C64 composer in the mid-90s.

Good show! I think the PC-98 is best understood as a business machine that accidentally became the standard for home computer gaming (similar to IBM-compatibles in the West). NEC released a line of multi-media machines at some point that came with internal sound chips but the vast majority of systems was sold with only a beeper, which meant you had to buy a sound card if you wanted music in your games. The market of PC-98 sound cards gets often reduced to OPN vs. OPNA but in reality there are a ton of different models (see link 1 (
http://www.geocities.jp/cpuparts98/SOUND/SOUND98/SOUND98.htm), link 2 (
http://www.hi-ho.ne.jp/~y-exp/dustman/sound.htm)), from very early ones with PSG chips, various FM-based boards, to internal or external MIDI solutions, or even CD audio. For example, the YM2608 was used in many different cards that are not necessarily 100% compatible with each other and often differ in the way (AD)PCM is handled.
P.S. Can you show this (
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-kiiMFyEEc) to Mike, who completely undersold Hiroaki Sano as a composer. That dude was actually one of the most prolific PC-98 musicians (
https://vndb.org/s1300), and especially his MIDI stuff is top shelf material.

Yeah, I went pretty basic because the PTR audience doesn't geek-out nearly as much as we do over the tech stuff, and neither does Mike, so we just focused on playing some great music. Plus, I spoke a lot about the MIDI modules in the X68000 show and didn't want to take up more time re-explaining it all. But I'm glad you liked the show nonetheless! I'll point Mike towards some more Sano stuff, maybe he'll find something else to use in a future episode. :)

Oh, and another thing I just remembered: Takeshi Abo has a lot of his PC-98 music up on his website (
http://valsound.fc2web.com/music/rhyme.html) and I assume these recordings are made with real hardware. So if you want to compare Hoot vs. the real thing (with regards to PCM volume) then this is probably a good source. Rhyme Star actually started as a SNES game and so did the music, you can get a few samples of the original soundtrack on that same page.

So if you want to compare Hoot vs. the real thing (with regards to PCM volume) then this is probably a good source. Rhyme Star actually started as a SNES game and so did the music, you can get a few samples of the original soundtrack on that same page.
Rhyme Star was originally going to be an SNES game? So why did he quit?
just grabbed Uridium 2 for Amiga, thanks

While we're on the subject of the PC-98, I would like to make a request for that computer. I recently started playing a RPG called "Mad Paradox" and I'm really starting to dig it's music, so I wondered if you could rip the soundtrack?

AudioPanicRoom - Episode #048: Micro Cabin
A podcast with music by developer and publisher Micro Cabin, best known for the Xak series and its various spinoffs. Many of their early releases originated on Japanese computers and featured an excellent line-up of composers like Tadahiro Nitta, Ryuji Sasai, Yasufumi Fukuda, and Yukiharu Urita who created spectacular soundtracks, especially for the 'lesser' FM chips like OPLL and OPN.

Requesting two SEGA rips: Thunder Force for X1 and Shadow Dancer for Arcade. Know you aren't doing rips but if you ever do start up again these two are high up because they are missing. I already got a rip of Shinobi Arcade done if interested.
Does Thunder Force X1 even have any music? Shadow Dancer should be doable, though.

I think it does as the PC-88 Rip has William Tell. Also one Final minor request: Raiden Densetsu for FM-Towns. As a port of the classic proto-danmaku shmup Raiden, I hear it has an exclusive arranged score that is stellar according to HG101

Finally some new C64 rips! :) Thanks for the update.
The Young Ones, LOL. Funny that they made a game out of that, but not very surprising at the same time. I remember reading somewhere that they couldn't get the rights from the BBC to use the actual theme from the show, so they made their own theme reminiscent of it. I know Barry Leitch made a SID of the original theme (unrelated to the game).
Can we do some more requests? If so, in addition to my previous request of Gemini Wing, here are two more C64 ones:

Another minor request:
Giten Megami Tensei: Tokyo Mokushiroku (PC98)
AKA Megami Tensei: Tokyo Revelation.
Not too long ago, I also requested this, along with the MIDI version of it.
The game was also released on Windows in 1998 by ASCII/Atlus. Many people consider it a black sheep to the Shin Megami Series due to its nudity, but it is still a Megami Tensei game, so I don't mind.

Oh. I guess I am too late then. :(
But as for Giten Megami Tensei, it is the PC-98 version. There was another version also released in 1998 that used MIDI support for Windows PCs. Anyway, I do have the tools to convert it from FLAC to MP3, so thanks for the tip. :)

The PC-98 version has FM and MIDI soundtracks. You can play them using this set (
https://mega.nz/#!DcpAlKpI!9AkbjP90bLPkYg-EAtA5XSOIDKCGVdfRk7dOzjTKdF8) and the Hoot archive I posted on the previous page. I've never seen the Windows version so I can't comment on that.

The windows version of Giten Megami Tensei appears to have identical sounding midi files, at least on Roland. Extracted midis from the Windows version end abruptly, so the best way to record them is Hoot.

I don't use Hoot anymore. It is too much of a hassle trying to log in each track one by one thanks to the program's infrastructure.
syllogism
05-21-2018, 08:49 PM
Actually in addition to the midi files that are identical to the PC-98 version, the windows version also has music in midi stream (MDS) format that are playable on Foobar and sound different. I'm not sure which version the game itself plays or if there is even a way to configure midi device. I'll look into it tomorrow.
e: the midi stream files are likely just conversions to improve compatibility of the original PC-98 tracks, which seem to have some playback issues unless you fix them with e.g. Midiplex. They are also looped multiple times as all the MDS tracks are at least 5 minutes long.

I do the conversion to .wav with a script that (once configured) can be run unattended in the background. Still means you have to edit the tracks afterwards if you want them to have proper lengths and fadeouts. If there is any serious interest in using the script then let me know and I'll post it here.

What's the name of the game? I'd say the scope of this thread is mostly defined by sound hardware (i.e. computers with sound chips) rather than release date. But I don't really have a hard rule for this and you can find CD audio soundtracks here as well. There are other threads on this forum that are better equipped to deal with streamed audio formats, though.

I'm not sure if this game can even be emulated: it's mostly mechanical and lacks a screen. However, the music (or at least one track) was released on one of the Namco Video Game Graffiti albums that you can get here (
Thread 206802).
