Ah, I see. Toyo Kusanagi and his compositions at Family Soft were great. I would like to try ripping music off of Hoot, but it seems too complicated, since you have to log each track using .WAV one by one, then convert all the tracks to MP3.

I have scripts that fully automate the wav-logging, the only part that you would have to do manually is the editing (track length, fade out, etc. ) and some of the tagging.

Maybe pick a soundtrack that you want to rip in Hoot (preferably a short one), and I'll try to walk you through the process.

That is what is so complicated about it. I don't know. All of the ones I want are either long, unknown, or never released yet, like Brah Choushinden, Gal Act Heroism, Wolvish Gallop and some good soundtracks from D.O., such as Crystal Reynal: Ouma no Mekyuu and all of the tracks from Family Soft.

OK. I might need the scripts to log .wavs and tagging.

I still don't know. It seems like a tedious process. It would be best if I just waited.

Today's update includes a handful of Amiga arcade ports and some other random stuff. Enjoy!

Toki (Amiga, 1990, Ocean) - A pretty good port of the arcade game with a much improved soundtrack by Pierre-Eric Loriaux. I think only two of the themes are actually based on the arcade soundtrack.
Stage 2 (https://youtu.be/t1No7kqyuSo?t=94)

Pang / Buster Bros. (Amiga, 1990, Ocean) - Another arcade port by Pierre-Eric Loriaux. The soundtrack covers the arcade original, but the intro theme is an original piece.
Intro (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cezJNg4plbA)

Shadow Warriors / Ninja Gaiden (Amiga, 1990, Ocean) - Composed by Matt Furniss, this is loosely based on Tecmo's arcade soundtrack.
Shadow Soldier (https://youtu.be/wnmAXVieUqk?t=140)

Fire and Forget II: The Death Convoy (Amiga, 1990, Titus) - I think this was supposed to be an arcade game at some point. The project was eventually cancelled and only the home ports were ever published.
Title Screen (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=awB8W-zQZrQ)

Realms of Arkania: Blade of Destiny (Amiga, 1993, U.S.Gold) - RPG based on a pen & paper game with an orchestral / acoustic guitar soundtrack by Rudi Stember.
Intro (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGlZpfPAfXk)

The Faery Tale Adventure (Amiga, 1987, MicroIllusions) - Classic Amiga RPG. This isn't really new but I updated the soundtrack with a version that runs at the correct NTSC speed.
Daytime Travel (wrong speed) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=znBPjxkq-WE)

Etemible: Tenjou Mukyuu (PC-9801 [SC-88], 1995, Glodia) - Atmospheric MIDI soundtrack by Tenpei Sato.

Noctropolis (MS-DOS [SC-88, CD Audio], 1994, Electronic Arts) - P&C adventure/mystery game with some really nice MIDI arrangements.

Wingstar (MS-DOS, 1996, Interactivision) - Raiden-inspired shmup.
Stage 1 (https://youtu.be/VhwdRqUNVSU?t=2)

The Apprentice (CD-i, 1994, Philips Interactive Media) - A pretty awesome looking puzzle-platformer, and the music is not too shabby either. At times this reminds me of the Rare soundtracks on the N64.
Medieval Tower (https://youtu.be/BGOddOjpyBU?t=261)

Soft de Hard na Monogatari 2 (X68000, 1989, System Sacom) - A Manabu Saito soundtrack. Like with the prequel, the music here seems to be based on classical compositions for the most part.

And two updated C64 soundtracks: Quedex, Task III

I'm curious, nx666, but are there any more Hitoshi Sakimoto soundtracks (PC 88/98, Sharp X68000, Sharp X1, etc.) left for possible future releases? Or have they all been taken care of? I'm curious, because I wanted to thank you for introducing me to another excelleng VG composer.

He has a complete(?) list of his music on his website (http://sakimoto.jp/), although this doesn't seem to distinguish between arrangements and original compositions.

This is what I currently have in my (pretty sizable) backlog:
Dragon Master Silk 1+2
Barabatus no Majo (I could post a third-party rip, if you want)
Blue Garnet
Raika
Heroes of the Lance (can't find a disk image of this game)

If it's no harm in asking how did you exactly rip the sound off of PC-88/98 games?

This is a fairly complex subject as there are many different methods, the most common are:

- Hoot: relatively easy, supports many games, finding the right disk images can sometimes be a problem though
- from VGM or S98 files: even easier but only very few games are available in these formats
- original sound format via player/plugin: some formats are directly supported by players like Foobar, Winamp, etc.
- original sound format via the game's sound driver: requires knowledge of the sound driver, effort varies, but sometimes this is surprisingly easy
- sound test: some games have (sometimes hidden) sound tests that allow you to record the music
- hacking: this is where it gets ugly, by far the most time-consuming method

If you need help ripping a particular game, just ask in this thread.

THANK YOU!! Seriously I've been trying to figure out how to rip this stuff for years, and not once I ever got a response to that question! So thank you.

Actually there is two games in particular that I would like to get:

Daimadou Senryaku Monogatari & 95, not sure if they have different tracks or one has more than the other, but I REALLY would like to get a rip for this one especially!

Kikimora's Cleanup, Someone did upload this one to Youtube, but I would prefer an outright rip mostly cause the uploader just recorded the music while playing which sounds a bit off...

If you can get these two you'll have my eternal gratitude~!

If you want to give this a shot yourself, you can find the music for these games on Compile's Disc Station #5 and #8 releases. Both can be recorded in Hoot, player and music files available here (http://snesmusic.org/hoot/v2/). I'm not sure when I'll be able to look into this, maybe I can fit in DMS somewhere, but DMS'95 seems to be a rather lengthy affair.

In the meantime you can download Kikimora's Clean Up! from the OP, fortunately that one only had 6 tracks :)

Yea not surprised the strategy game being an odd one, though I don't think it has many tracks itself either considering DiscStation titles are usually very short, and reuse music pretty often! Still DMadou and it's '95 counterpart from hindsight seem to be mostly the same from my playthroughs. Regardless I'm a patient sort, so take you're time!

*Annnnd I completely clueless on how to even work with those files! Ah wells guess I'll just actually wait for ya then.

Something for the weekend...

The Incredible Machine 3 (Windows, 1995, Sierra) - Despite the name, this is actually the Windows port of Incredible Machine 2 with a CD audio soundtrack. Every track is done in a different genre and most of it is pretty good.
New Age (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CWQZ8PEVn7o), Tuna Loaf (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KpeY0kYgKM8), Progressive (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_QV3lfib_8)

WiBArm (MS-DOS [Tandy], 1989, Brderbund) - DOS port of the Arsys classic. Compared to the original PC-88 version, this one seems to have significantly more music.

Buzz Aldrin's Race Into Space (MS-DOS [SC-55, CD Audio], 1993, Interplay) - Pretty good orchestral MIDI music and the two CD tracks are the icing on the cake.
Victory (CD Version) (https://youtu.be/_5OGdjAKVio?t=96)

The Combatribes (Arcade, 1990, Technos) - Beat'em up by Technos with rockin' music by Kazunaka Yamane.
Amusement Park Nightmare (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zf7KPG6Hvh0), The Motorcycle Nuclear Warheads (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7SQPsoO9nw)

Illumination Laser (X68000, 2000, TERRA) - A doujin shmup with music by Shinoda Nobuhisa (I.C.KaZe)
R.E.D. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6YGn3T4ovCs), Orange Type L (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9LKTnuUzF34)

Mahou Shoujo Fancy Coco (PC-9801 [OPN], 1996, POW) - Music by Ryu Umemoto and Takeaki Watanabe (NAVA). Some really good stuff with excellent sound design, kinda crazy what they were able to do with the puny OPN chip.

I had a little bit of time today to work on some of the suggestions from this week:

BloodNet: A Cyberpunk Gothic (Amiga, 1995, MicroProse) - There seems to be only one set of sound files for this game which this rip is based on.
Intro (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KfFU-jtsciU), Character Creation (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U0uUUc88Fpo)

Daimadou Senryaku Monogatari (PC-9801, 1995, Compile) - Looks like a Puyo Puyo-themed SRPG.
Title Theme (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m12lRiAeCVc), Arle's Theme (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4yUMbWVNEY0)

Daimadou Senryaku Monogatari '95 (PC-9801, 1995, Compile) - Some sort of a remake of the first game. There is significantly more music, but I could only find tags for a few of the tracks.
Arle's Theme (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GheTowthsX4), Staff Roll (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=baLIXutu5lU)

Blue Garnet (PC-9801, 1994, Trush) - Visual novel with music arranged by Hitoshi Sakimoto.
BG06 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZqRaNI5Jzuk), BG08 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aSL2x4-ve5E)

Mahjong Princess Go! Go! (PC-9801, 1995, Ringer Bell) - Some people (like the video below) claim this was also composed by Hitoshi Sakimoto, but it isn't listed on his website. Maybe he doesn't want to be credited for the music of a hentai mahjong game?

Hey nx666. If you have real Japanese computers, do you know anyone who can fix the PSU for the FM TOWNS II HR model?

Have you tried taking it to an electronics repair shop? You need someone who is able to test your PSU with a multimeter and fix the damaged components. Based on my experience with ancient PSU's, it's often capacitors that have to be replaced. And it would probably help if you could find schematics for that thing on the internet, otherwise the repair could be a total crapshot. I don't think there is a place that specializes in FM Towns repairs though, simply because there is no market for that outside of Japan.

Little Big Adventure 2 (MS-DOS, 1997, Electronic Arts) - Classic DOS action adventure with pretty interesting music. Sounds a little bit like a mix of Stephane Picq and Danny Elfman.
LBa's Theme (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3YMfaqvWBg), Zeelich (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CfwW5ZeEwM4)

Chou Jigen Densetsu Rall 3: Kakuseihen (PC-9801 [OPN], 1994, Fairy Dust) - More Ryu Umemoto goodness.

Bakuretsu Quiz Tatakae! Maitiruna (PC-9801 [OPN], 1994, Ucom) - Also known as Mighty Luna, a quiz game with nice upbeat tunes.
Final Battle (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KhNhU0oO9jg), Explosion (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nKtSt96Q8hg)

Cross Changer (PC-9801 [OPNA], 1994, Ucom) - A visual novel scored by the same composer

X-Girl (PC-9801 [OPN], 1996, Fairytale Red-Zone) - Torture porn in form of a p&c adventure game. Composed by Akira Sato, this is mostly techno-inspired stuff and definitely one of the more interesting PC-98 soundtracks I have listened to lately.
Mouth 2 Mouth (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XpylhqgPhoU), Talking Base (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ie0YG5wXizY) <-- not the best tracks, but that's all I could find on Youtube

Arcus (PC-8801 [OPNA], 1988, Wolfteam) - I made my own rip of this game with longer tracks and proper fade outs.

Yeah, that is somewhat overdue. So far I have managed to create a simple blog and rss feed for this, but I haven't had the time to upload all the episodes yet. My understanding is that you can submit an rss-based podcast (I'm using Feedburner) to iTunes, or is there something else that needs to be done?

That... I couldn't tell ya. Usually I just label the "Composer" as LMS Music, or I tend to fall towards the falling people:

Masanobu Tsukamoto, BA. M, Einosuke Nagao, Imani Pon, and Toshiaki Sakodo. These guys in particular have done almost every Madou/Puyo Puyo related title since their inception. Though various ports have only a select few, sadly though I can't exactly read Japanese too well, so I wouldn't know who did these games specifically.

The '95 version especially is different, but I have a good feeling since the original uses music from 1-2-3, two of those composers might have been involved too. BA. M is notable for doing almost ALL DiscStation related games, so he might be a possible candidate as well.

Well, not anymore.

Alleykat (C64, 1986, Hewson) - Graftgold-developed shmup with music by Steve Turner. The emulated version included here is mono only as the SID plugin I usually use for this can't seem to play the track correctly.
Title Screen (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6gHMI-_0MIY)

Future Knight (C64, 1986, Gremlin Graphics) - Music by Ben Daglish
Title Screen (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Opm0kDI-d9I)

Sigma Seven (C64, 1986, Durell) - Isometric shmup, the music was converted from the original Spectrum version by Rob Hubbard.
Title Screen (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fVafNbR1YuA)

I, Ball (C64, 1987, Firebird) - I-Ball, I, I, I-Ball! This is also a shmup with a Rob Hubbard theme that is based on two Cabaret Voltaire tracks.

Some new Amiga stuff...

Rambo III (Amiga, 1989, Ocean) - Pretty crappy movie license with music by Jonathan Dunn.
Title Screen (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KjUdVYAQkNw)

Loopz (Amiga, 1990, Audiogenic) - By David Whittaker, this is the version of the soundtrack that sounds the most like Shadow of the Beast.
Tune A (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BiVDefW3tYg)

Ziriax (Amiga, 1990, The Software Business) - Tomas Dahlgren aka Uncle Tom was one of the first stars of the emerging Amiga demo scene. He also composed for a few games, like this one, a shmup inspired by Thunder Cross.
Title Screen (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uV9vvlhIK9Q)

Thunder Jaws (Amiga, 1991, Domark) - Atari arcade port with music by Jolyon Myers

Super Space Invaders (Amiga, 1991, Domark) - Another arcade conversion, also by Jolyon Myers.
Space Invaders Theme (https://youtu.be/TYtHvDpgsk4?t=69)

Dungeons of Avalon II: The Island of Darkness (Amiga, 1992, CompuTec Verlag) - A 3D dungeon crawler composed by Rudi Stember. This is very similar to his Realms of Arkania soundtrack.
Intro (https://youtu.be/ZngJn5K2V2Y?t=15)

Rackney's Island (Amiga, 1993, Megatronix) - Music by Jeroen Soede

Something for the historically inclined:

Deus Ex Machina (ZX Spectrum, 1984, Automata UK) - Is this even a game? Deus Ex Machina was one of the very first 'art games' and a very divisive product at that time. Originally released on the Spectrum in '84, the game features no in-game music. Instead, it came with an audio tape with music and narration that is played alongside the program. The script is loosely based on "The Seven Ages of Man" from Shakespeare's As You Like It.
walkthrough with full soundtrack (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ZS6JVCDI9s)

Piman's Greatest Hits (1984, Automata UK) - This is a collection of songs that were originally gracing the B-sides of various Automata games from 1983/84. Some of this is really ... well, see for yourself. The audio quality is not quite up to snuff, but keep in mind that this is coming from tapes that are a few decades old.

DATAHITS (1986, MUPADOS) - Arrangements of C64 game music by the likes of Hubbard and Galway that were originally released on cassette. A candidate for the very first European arrange album.

Radio Ace (1987, Ace Magazine) - This is another tape originally released by Ace Magazine. Side B contains some sort of video game music top 10. Also included is a (non-game) synthesizer track composed by Rob Hubbard.

Rob Hubbard Early Demos (1983, Rob Hubbard) - Before his career as a game composer, Hubbard worked as a studio musician. He eventually started to write his own tracks on synthesizers and some of these experiments were later used as the basis for his C64 soundtracks. Included here are early versions of the Chimera, Formula One Simulator, One Man and His Droid, and Phantoms of the Asteroid themes arranged with typical early 80s synths like the Roland TR606 and TB303, Korg poly synth, and Casio MT-20.

... plus three new C64 soundtracks:

Ninja (C64, 1986, Mastertronic) - Music by Rob Hubbard with East Asian influences.
Main Theme (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oPHlG8B_2sQ)

Tarzan (C64, 1986, Martech) - Also by Rob Hubbard, the title track is a cover of Tarzan's Nuts by Madness. The in-game tracks, especially the night versions, all have pretty spectacular sound design.
Title Screen (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ftcsTZSIyY)

Head Over Heels (C64, 1987, Ocean) - By Peter Clarke. This is all based on classical/traditional music.

A tribute to the late Ryu Umemoto and his work on the PC-9801. In the West, he is mostly known for his contributions to various Cave arcade shooters, but in Japan his claim to fame comes from these expertly crafted FM-synth soundtracks he composed for various visual novels in the 90s.

Better than being all over the place in no order with no names amiright? :p

Still I'm halve way done at least. (Mostly cause working all day, but not ENTIRELY complaining about that either!) So far keeping the tracks around 6-8 minutes at most, since I'm just that kinda odd person who would do that!

Are you trying to edit the tracks manually in order to create longer songs? That seems to be a lot of work if all you have are the versions from my rip. If you want, I could give you raw wav/flac files with 10 minutes of audio for each track. That would probably make these kind of edits a lot easier.

... Should've told me that earlier! >;p

It's ok though I already started, so I may as well finish it, ... actually you think you can pass me them anyway? I kinda wanna make sure my looping edits are as soundly as the game plays them.

I've been listening to all of his soundtracks again over the last two weeks, and that was a really awesome experience. He has such a unique style, that even makes his arrangements sound like they were originally composed by him. It's all very carefully constructed but extremely effective at the same time. He used to post on the Soundshock forum, seemed to be a really nice guy as well.

Good news everyone! Wait that sounds familiar...

Never mind I finished with Daimadou and 95's soundtrack! Thanks to Nx for giving me the 10 minute loops, initially was looping it all myself. I went and cleaned up, tagged, and stamped the audio so now it's much more organized! However I'm labeling it as '95 mostly because a lot of the tracks in the original are just taken from 1-2-3 save for a handful of tracks. The latter is the real meat with mostly arranged and 1-3 unique tracks.

Regardless here ya go!

I've just uploaded a new version of my Daimadou Senryaku Monogatari '95 (PC-9801) rip with new tags. Many thanks to Carbyken for that! Or, if you prefer the version with the extra-long tracks, then get it from Carbyken's post above.

And there is also one new soundtrack:

Kimi Dake ni Ai o... (X68000, 1991, Game Technopolis) - Jazzy tunes by Akira Sato, Ryu Takami, and the elusive BAKI.

I'll take requests again for the next week or so, but that is limited to soundtracks that can be done without too much of an effort. That means that I won't be able to do any game for which I have to extract the music myself, recordings from sound tests, or anything requiring an external MIDI device.

All the Sharp X1 games now have their own section in the OP, along with a handful of new soundtracks that Yuzo Koshiro composed for Dempa on that system:

The Gate of Labyrinth (Sharp X1, 1987, Dempa) - By Yuzo Koshiro, M. Kadowaki

Dark Storm: Demon Crystal III (Sharp X1, 1987, Dempa) - By Yuzo Koshiro

The Curse of Mars (Sharp X1, 1988, Dempa) - By Yuzo Koshiro

Issural: The Story of Calcan (Sharp X1, 1988, Dempa) - By Masashi Harada, Yuzo Koshiro, Mr. Jizou

And a few requests:

WiBArm (Sharp X1, 1986, Arsys Software)

U.N. Defense Force - Earth Joker (Arcade, 1993, Visco)

WWF European Rampage Tour (Amiga, 1992, Ocean)

As promised, here is my second batch of requests for you (if possible):

- Blade Master (Arcade; Irem's first (I believe) beat-em-up game they made)
- Star Luster (Sharp X68000; an enchanced remake of the NES original. The music sounds at times like a mid-80s Namco arcade game.)
- WWF WrestleMania (Amiga; I'm not sure how many tracks there are (probably one, lol), but I'm requesting this to complete Ocean's WWF games for the Amiga.)

Star Luster (X68000 [SC-88, OPM], 1994, Dempa) - There are only about 6 minutes of music in this game so I ended up doing the MIDI and FM versions of the soundtrack. The FM version is missing the Ending theme which I couldn't find in the sound files, it's also missing from the sound test for some reason.

Here are the other two:

Lee Trevino's Fighting Golf (Arcade, 1988, SNK) - I couldn't find tags for this one, and there might be a few duplicates as well.

XZR: Hakai no Guuzou (MSX2, 1988, Telenet) - An homage to PC beeper soundtracks

Here is the fourth and final request (for the time being) this week from me:

- Laydock (MSX; the first game in the series.)
- Laydock (Sharp X68000; not sure if this version is much better sonically than the MSX version, but requesting it nonetheless.)
- Super Laydock: Mission Striker (MSX; not sure if this is a sequel to or a remake of the first Laydock, but I'm hedging my bets here, lol.)

I requested these because ever since I listened to the Laydock 2 VGM you uploaded days ago, I've been curious to know what the music to the other games in the series sounded like.

And that's it for me!! I'll still be checking around here now and then, and will resume work in helping identifying and retagging soundtracks for you, should the time and need arises. ;)

I wouldn't mind the OPN tracks for the PC-98 versions, no matter how basic the OPN sound is. I like the sounds of both OPNA and OPN tracks on every game released for the PC-88 & 98 anyways.

This is going to be the last round of requests for now and it's full of Laydock

Laydock (MSX2, 1986, T&E Soft) - Only one PSG track by Shigeru Tomita

Super Laydock: Mission Striker (MSX2, 1986, T&E Soft) - The sequel with significantly more music.

Super Laydock: Mission Striker (Sharp X1, 1987, T&E Soft) - Probably the best version of this soundtrack thanks to the superior sound hardware of the TurboZ model.

Laydock (X68000, 1997, Takayuki Hoshishiba) - Fan-made port based on the MZ-2500 version.

Namachuukei 68 / Nama Baseball '68 (X68000, 1991, Konami) - Baseball game with music by Yuji Takenouchi

Thanks for MagMax and Frisky Tom, nx666. If Seicross is too difficult for now, can you replace it with the PC-98 Lenam - Sword of Legend? If you need something, let me know. Thank you.

I think you had asked for Lenam 98 before. Also, I'm closed for requests at the moment.

From what I remember the game stores most of its data in custom archives, so I would have to analyze that format and then extract the sound files. And there is probably more time required in order to get these files to play with the sound driver outside of the game.

AudioPanicRoom - Episode #017: Game Music History ~1988~

A look at the year 1988 in game music. The year that saw the first CD and MIDI soundtracks, arcade boards started the transition from FM to PCM, and some real classics were released on the NES. Meanwhile in Europe the C64 had reached its commercial peak in a market that was slowly being taken over by the new generation of 16-bit computers. As always, the playlist is in rough chronological order.

I'm not taking requests right now, but I'll keep them in mind when I do the next round of Amiga soundtracks. I might have to pass on Indy 4 though, these iMuse soundtracks all have interactive music that can only really be recorded by playing through the entire game.

I have a request- Inindo: Datou Nobunaga. Everyone knows of the SNES version, but I also know that there are PC88, MSX, PC98, and X68000 versions of the soundtrack. So, which one is better in terms of music?

Some new stuff:

Moonstone: A Hard Days Knight (Amiga, 1991, Mindscape) - Action RPG with lots of gory battles. Some people have been comparing this to Dark Souls, but I think the overall structure of this game is actually quite different. The creepy music is by Richard Joseph.
Intro (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n0rrm5RXHyI)

Dragon Knight (X68000, 1989, Elf) - First part in this SRPG series.
Opening (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zhsYxtcOBno)

Ultima V: Warriors of Destiny (X68000, 1990, Pony Canyon) - Like the PC-98 port, this was arranged by Kazuo Sawa
Stones (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wt3KXJOOwz0)

Dimo's Quest (CD-i, 1994, Philips Interactive) - Arcade/puzzle game with music by Joris de Man
OST (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=92Bsr1STk8s)

I think the typical Keygen sound is what was originally called Chiptune on the Amiga: music made with (mostly) single-cycle wave forms. Like ruiner said, much of what Jochen Hippel (Mad Max) did falls into this category. For a quick overview just listen to my podcast (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b45wTTA82_U) about him. Other game soundtracks in that genre:

Hybris
The Plague (especially the in-game music)
Battle Squadron
Captain Dynamo
Ilyad
Nebulus 2
much of Karsten Obarski's music (recommendations: Dyter 07 and Centerbase)

Many Amiga/DOS soundtracks were made by actual demo sceners and as a result sound pretty much like demo music:

Shockwave (Amiga) by 4Mat
Statix (Amiga) by Virgill, Lizard King
Super Space Invaders (Amiga), Thunderjaws (Amiga) by The Judge
Tales from Heaven (Amiga) by X-Ceed, Pink etc
Death Rally (MS-DOS) by Purple Motion
Outer Ridge (MS-DOS) by Karsten Koch

Pretty much every Pinball game on Amiga/DOS also has that distinct demo scene feel to it

Well, yeah, exactly. And because the only FM chip we feature on the show so far is the 2612, there weren't any Japanese composers to be featured. We add a new chip to the show every 5 episodes. I mean, if you know of any that used the C64, Amiga, or Atari ST, please let me know!

That's slim pickings, but there were a few people in Japan using trackers like Jea (of DJ Sharpnel fame), Tanigon, or Hide. I'm not a huge fan of gabber, but if you like that kind of music then this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zadWyrh2x1E) is probably pretty good.

Also largely forgotten, Ryo Kawasaki (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ryo_Kawasaki) composed a handful of songs (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RdArehl7A38) on the C64. It's obviously not nearly as impressive as later demo scene music, but by the standards of 1984 this is pretty good.

Oh and of course, there is a ton of Japanese demo music (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zj136EmGAKQ) on the FM Towns, which also uses the YM2612.

But none of these composers did any VGM as far as I can tell. Thus, they wouldn't have been eligible for the show anyways.

Still, this is all new info for me, and I'll check it out! I'm especially interested in the FM Towns stuff.

Something for the fans of Sharp computers:

Hydlide 3: The Space Memories (Sharp X1 [OPM], 1988, T&E Soft) - The TurboZ soundtrack of this game, compared to the PC-88 version this sounds a little bit better.
The Space Memories (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JIeW-pbt_58)

Herzog (Sharp X1 [OPM], 1988, Tecnosoft) - This one is also quite different from the PC-88 version.
Sleight of Hand (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=301zFudhhRA)

Inindo: Way of the Ninja (X68000, 1991, Koei) - Koei RPG composed by Hiori Wakakuwa.

・C・O・N・T・I・N・U・E・ (X68000, 199x) - Probably a shmup, I've never been able to find this game, but the music is awesome.

Some of the rarer Chris Huelsbeck soundtracks, that guy seemed to take whatever job he could get...

Danger Freak (Amiga, 1989, Rainbow Arts) - Some sort of stuntman simulator.
Intro (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZYjBRwzLtM)

Logistic (Amiga, 1989) - Don't know if this was ever released commercially, probably just some PD game.
Title Screen (https://youtu.be/mrFDUTIiJKo?t=54)

Sunny Shine on the Funny Side of Life (Amiga, 1990, Rainbow Arts) - Aka L&M Adventure, a promotional game developed for Philip Morris and their brand of L&M cigarettes.

HB Car Race (Amiga, 1989, Starbyte) - Unreleased game, probably also of promotional nature (for HB in this case)

Jinn: Eien no Yuushi / Jinn: Eternal Hero (PC-9801 [OPNA], 1994, Tenshindo) - RPG that looks a little bit like Bard's Tale or Might & Magic. The music is by Takahiro Yonemura (Chemool) and Osamu Ishikawa.
We Will Overcome The Obstacle (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YRxPpqlQwTQ), Sense of Crisis (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jlrLL0s8GhA)

Beneath a Steel Sky (MS-DOS [MT-32], 1994, Virgin) - Classic DOS adventure
Opening (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fdbaTKNwITI)

Beneath a Steel Sky (Amiga, 1994, Virgin) - The Amiga port, in terms of music it's a bit hit and miss imo. Also included are the tracks from the CD32 version.

I think Ryo Kawasaki used the C64 for his synthesizer software as there wasn't any other computer with a comparable sound chip at that time. He was living in New York in the 80s and was probably very familiar with the US computer market. I don't think anybody in Japan 'hates' the C64, it was just never really a thing over there.

The following soundtracks have been updated with proper song titles and numbering, many thanks to KingTengu for that!

Bermuda Triangle (Arcade) - with four extra tracks from World Wars (the Japanese release), I included both variations of the Continue jingle as they really seem to be different in the two versions of the game.

Superior Soldiers (Arcade), Laydock 2: Last Attack (MSX2), Super Laydock: Mission Striker (MSX2)

XZR: Hakai no Guuzou (MSX2) - now also with more detailed composer information

And, as a bonus, four new arcade soundtracks that somehow managed to escape one of the updates from last week:

Winning Run (Arcade, 1988, Namco) - by Hiroyuki Kawada

Four Trax (Arcade, 1989, Namco) - by Junko Ozawa and Yoshie Takayanagi

Marvel Land (Arcade, 1990, Namco) - by Etsuo Ishii

Hellfire (Arcade, 1989, Taito) - by Tatsuya Uemura

Plus two different versions of an old computer classic:

Ultima III: Exodus (Atari 8-Bit, 1983, Origin Systems)

Ultima III: Exodus (Amiga, 1986, Origin Systems)

The other two are doable, although the MIDI recording will have to wait as I currently don't have access to my SC-55. The Zavas soundtracks seem to be the same, the X68000 version is stereo though so I'll probably go with that one.

OK.

Aw man, I thought Kyodai did.

What happened to your SC-55 by the way? Because I want to know if you could do the ILLUSION CITY MT32 soundtrack as well as the CM32L version of the Tower of Gazzel both for the MSX.

I've never seen MIDI sound files for MSX games but the PC-98 version of Illusion City also has an MT-32 soundtrack which would be much easier to do.

My SC-55 is doing fine, thanks for asking. I just don't have it with me right now.

A few soundtracks people have been asking for:

Ultima V: Warriors of Destiny (Atari ST, 1989, Origin Systems) - The music for this port was arranged by Wally Beben and is notable for the Stones theme, which has seemingly endless variations in this version. Maybe the arrangements are even procedurally generated for each loop? Anyway, I recorded four different versions for this rip.

The Legend of Kyrandia (Amiga, 1992, Virgin) - Conversion of the DOS soundtrack by Frank Klepacki. All the dynamic changes that the sound driver can do are not really reflected in this rip, but sadly there is not much I can do about that.

Alone in the Dark (MS-DOS [OPL2,CD Audio], 1992, Infogrames) - By Philippe Vachey and Frdric Mentzen, included is the music from the later CD release, which was also used in the 3DO version of the game.

Zavas (X68000, 1989, Glodia) - By Nobuhito Koise

It was MUS09, and MUS26, I believe.

I think both of these sound as intended, maybe some of the tracks were redone for the SNES release?

Let me see if I can find a different rip and/or sound files. I looked for different rips of Inindo for different systems- such as the PC98 and PC88.
I don't know if there is a rip for the MSX version, but there is one, and I don't know if they sound good.

The Picq soundtracks are on my to-do list, but that's all pretty time-consuming stuff so I wouldn't expect them anytime soon. You can grab LBA2 from the DOS section and ruiner has the 3DO version of Lost Eden. Shadow of the Comet should be a quick rip, so maybe I can look into that next week.

Call of Cthulhu: Shadow of the Comet (MS-DOS, 1993, Infogrames) - Music by Philippe Vachey, I thought this was an easy rip of the floppy version until I saw the expanded soundtrack of the CD release. Anyway, they are both included here, as well as the music from the 'Lovecraft museum' that came with the game.
Welcome to Illsmouth (https://youtu.be/md44Mo8_Qjs?t=180)

Little Big Adventure (MS-DOS [SC88,CD Audio], 1994, Electronic Arts) - Another Philippe Vachey soundtrack. This rip has all the CD audio tracks plus recordings of the MIDI files.
Lba's Theme (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_QECdKDMYIo)

Robert E. Lee: Civil War General (Windows, 1996, Sierra) - American civil war-era strategy game, with mostly (exclusively?) contemporary music. The game came with some sort of multimedia history book, that 'soundtrack' is also included here.

Illusion City: Gen'ei Toshi (PC-9801 [OPN,MT-32], 1991, Micro Cabin) - This soundtrack was updated with the MT-32 version, which actually sounds pretty good.

Thanks a lot for the MT-32 version of Illusion City or what I like to call the "Director's Cut Version".

Anyway, I have 4 requests, but the maximum is 3.

First, are the Branmarker games. A company called D.O. made the first one and 2nd one on PC98. I do not know if the music in both versions have any output extensions, such as OPNA or MIDI. Branmarker 2 is also for the FM-TOWNS, but it is rare.

2nd are 2 rare games that I do not know if you can find the images to them- Gunblaze and ABEL for the FM-Towns. If you cannot find them , then I have one more game made by D.O. that I would like to request as an RPG as my 3rd in its place- Crystal Rinal:Ouma no Mekyuu for the PC98. In terms of music, I also do not know if there any other output extensions to Crystal Rinal as well.

A handful of Taito arcade soundtracks, plus one lonely Konami game:

Top Speed / Full Throttle (Arcade, 1987, Taito) - Arcade racing game with an awesome 'metal' soundtrack by Masahiro Takagi. For a slightly cleaner version of the same music check out the X68000 port.

Aqua Jack (Arcade, 1990, Taito) - Crusing around in a power boat while shooting at anything that moves. This was composed by Shizuo Aizawa, the stage themes are all pretty good.

Magical Date EX (Arcade, 1997, Taito) - Dating sim/mini game collection with music by Hiroyuki Misawa and Norihiro Furukawa.

Puzzle De Pon! (Arcade, 1995, Taito) - Similar to the Puzzle Bobble games with bouncy music.

Liquid Kids / Mizubaku Daibouken (Arcade, 1990, Taito) - This plays like a mix of New Zealand Story, Bubble Bobble, and Parasol Stars. The music is by Kazuko Umino.

Rock'n Rage / Koi no HotRock (Arcade, 1986, Konami) - A rock star armed with a guitar battles his way through different time periods. The soundtrack consists mostly of licensed(?) pop songs like the Born in the USA or Rock me Amadeus. I think this was also the very first game Iku Mizutani worked on.

Civil War 2: Generals (Windows, 1997, Sierra) - More civil war-era music

The main goal of this thread has always been making hard-to-find (and for most people hard-to-play) music accessible to everyone. This is first and foremost a preservation effort, but I don't own the rights to any of the music posted in this thread and I honestly don't mind if people upload this stuff elsewhere. Sites like KHI have been doing that for a while and I would be even more happy if they would drop a line of gratitude every now and then, but in the end that is their problem not mine. There are obviously downsides to this as well, for example I sometimes replace rips with newer versions and these updates probably just get lost in the shuffle.

So the bottom line is, if you want to upload the soundtracks somewhere else then please go ahead and do it. I could probably help you a little bit with the download of the collection by providing links to the individual folders.

Edit: Haha, just had a look at KHI, their front page looks like a carbon copy of this thread.

I wish I could encode all of my stuff with 666 kbps, that would be much better than any (removable) tag :)

Like I said above, what bothers me the most is the lack of version control on this. At some point their site will have a lot of outdated soundtracks. I sometimes upload small fixes that I don't even mention in the thread.

What makes you think this thread is closed? I just had to dial back the requests a little bit, mostly for my own sanity :)

There is also a PC-9821 release called "Bacta 1&2 + Voice" that seems to have OPNA versions of both soundtracks and probably sounds a little bit better than the original OPN music.

I'm not really an expert on eroge games, but vndb has a very extensive tagging system that let's you search for games with 'Childish Violent Heroes', 'Excessive Semen', 'Bloodplay', 'Human Cattle",' just to name a few examples. Did you know that there are over 80 games in the 'Ejaculation Forewarner' category? Illuminating.

Thanks for enlightening me on Bacta 1&2 + Voice, wasn't sure what was going on there, and that would probably be ideal. And yeah, I love vndb. Despite all the easy shots I see people taking at it, I'm incredibly glad it exists and "illuminating" is totally appropriate (turns out your previously-ripped X-Girl kinda falls into the same category of game) Thanks again in advance!

Alvaleak Boukenki / Alvareak Adventure Story (PC-9801 [SC-55], 1993, Glodia) - Mostly orchestral music by Nobuhito Koise and Tenpei Sato.

Bacta 1 & 2 + Voice (PC-9821, 1996, Himeya Soft) - This really just seems to be a combination of the two original soundtracks, unfortunately I could only find tags for the second game.

Yoake no Merry-Go-Round (PC-8801 [OPNA], 1993, Active Gamers) - I have no idea what this is, but the music is pretty awesome. Active Gamers released disk mags and a handful of doujin games in the early 90s but I wasn't able to find any reference to this particular 'game'.

Technically I should file you under the Label, becoming nx666 - N/A, but we don't do that for the same reason we usually don't include the year of vgm translation over the music's original publishing date. So with that in mind I've been tagging your rips by Publisher - nx666 Rip. Anytime I want to sort a Label from a Publisher, I can tell my smart playlist to filter out Comments ending in Rip (which also covers situations where the ripper is unknown). My thinking is that catalog numbers will often indicate the type of media within the number, but where commercial releases have established terminology for distinguishing CDs from cassettes from records, rips do not, so this is the most faithful solution I could come up with for the moment.

For that last one I actually use the Media Type tag. Normally you would see things like CD, 2xCD, Cassette, Digital, etc. in this field, but for my rips (and those of other people) I put sound source / file format information in there. For example anything recorded from the internal X68000 sound chip is tagged as:

YM2151 (OPM), MSM6258 (ADPCM)

I also distinguish between real hardware recordings and emulation so the above would become:

YM2151 (OPM), MSM6258 (ADPCM) Emulation

For some systems (I have a System tag as well) this might seem a bit redundant, but for arcade games and many computers I find this incredibly useful. Most importantly, this lets me exclude soundtracks with the dreaded X1-010 chip from my playlists. Or I could create a smart playlist for all my favorite Beeper tunes in just a few seconds.

Which ones are you still missing?

Ultima III's Atari ST, PC-8801, PC-9801, MSX2, and FM Towns versions. My Apple II copy lacks the tracks "Rule Britannia", "Alive", and "Fanfare", so those would be appreciated, but I understand if you can't get them. (The game was also ported to Fujitsu FM-7, Sharp X1, and Macintosh, but I don't know whether or not these ones have soundtracks or not.)

Ultima IV's Atari 8-bit, PC-8801, PC-9801, MSX2, NES, Master System, and FM Towns versions. (Ports also exist on Fujitsu FM-7 and Sharp X1, but, again, not sure whether or not they have soundtracks.)

Ultima V's FM Towns and NES versions. Various Apple II versions using sound/MIDI cards that might've been installed upon it would be appreciated, but are completely unnecessary as I already have copies both of the Mockingboard and Dual Mockingboard Apple II soundtrack.

Fan made upgrade patches for the IBM-PC ports also added in music, so those would be nice, but aren't really necessary. (If you do get them, the Adlib sound card is preferable, but any average IBM-PC sound card will do. Again, this one isn't really necessary.)

I know that's an absolutely ridiculously huge request, so please don't feel rushed to upload them on my account. I'm very patient and will gladly wait for you to upload them in your own time. :)

I just uploaded these two, there are a few others that can probably done pretty easily as well.

Ultima III: Exodus (PC-9801, 1989, Pony Canyon) - There are two releases of Ultima 3 for the PC-98, I'm not sure if the original Starcraft version even has any music though.

Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar (PC-8801 [OPN], 1987, Pony Canyon) - I've seen hints that there is also an OPNA version, but I haven't had time to investigate this further.

AudioPanicRoom - Episode #020: Thalamus

Thalamus was a British publisher, mostly known for their small, but fine selection of C64 releases, which included some of the most impressive games on the system. Equally impressive were their soundtracks, composed by an assortment of SID legends, like Rob Hubbard, Jeroen Tel, Martin Walker, Matt Gray, or Steve Rowlands. This podcast features a selection of some of Thalamus' best tracks on the C64 and Amiga.

No new soundtracks, but something much, much better!

For all the fans of X68000 music, here is a little project I have been working on for a while: an archive of X68k music based on the latest Hoot release. This comes with support for 542 games including over 150 new sets that you won't find anywhere else.

hoot20160515-X68k (https://mega.nz/#!OExUAACT!6NvFm-Q4iOUmsBKdwDQQgwxvSAO1jZDiJK9c7DEbIzI)

Just unzip the folder somewhere on your hard drive and start Hoot.exe, no need to install anything else.

While working on this, I also recorded some new X68000 soundtracks, which I will post here over the next few days.

As promised, a truckload of new X68000 soundtracks:

Xak II: Rising of the Redmoon (X68000, 1992, Takeru) - Pretty much the PC-88 version on steroids.

Spindizzy II (X68000, 1991, Arsys Software) - A port of the awesome Spindizzy Worlds on the Amiga. This version has an exclusive soundtrack by Arsys veteran Toshiya Yamanaka and the music is pretty great.
Eternal Move (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YlC9SwfBdmc), Canal Side (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g2xrjcqLB5Y), Oily Way (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BUquBer1o7Y)

Air Combat: Yuugekiou II (X68000, 1990, SystemSoft) - A flight simulator, ported from the PC-98.
Intro (https://youtu.be/GR_CmSd3QgU?t=9)

Quarth / Block Hole (X68000, 1990, Konami) - Arcade port
The Theme from Quarth (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8lPFTpTxG_w)

Fantasy Zone (X68000, 1989, Micomsoft) - Also an arcade port, this one also comes with an arranged version of the original soundtrack.
Dreaming Tomorrow (Arrange) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHFLafvtoIc)

Nekketsu High School Dodgeball Club: Soccer (X68000, 1990, Sharp) - Port of the NES game aka World Cup Soccer. Like with the other games in this series, the soundtrack consists of mostly blues / surf rock pieces.

Drinky & Smokey (X68000, 1994, Dream Staff) - Doujin game that plays a little bit like Lemmings with music very similar to the Nekketsu games.

Dragon Knight II (X68000, 1991, Elf) - By far the longest soundtrack in this series. This one was composed by Manabu Kunieda and Yuki Ushimaru.

Jotei Senki LV3: The Queen of Fighters (X68000, 1994, Linner System) - A doujin fighting game with an all-female cast. Most (all?) of the characters are based on other video games, and the soundtrack mostly consists of arrangements as well.
Psycho Soldier Theme (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ryb8Qks2w34)

Jotei Senki LV4: Heroines Forever (X68000, 1995, Linner System) - the sequel

Little Chinese Final Edition (X68000, 199x, Takeboo) - Music by Takahiro Yonemura (Chemool)
Junkyard (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ufOZ-_1DZQ0)

The last four games were composed by Kenichi Arakawa. This is all pretty awesome stuff.

Animahjong V3 (X68000, 1993, Sogna) - Port of the PC-98 game

Viper-V6 Turbo (X68000, 1994, Sogna) - Visual novel

Viper-V8 Twin Turbo (X68000, 1994, Sogna) - Visual novel
Too Cold (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0z25dOHnrUc)

Jewel Bem Hunter Lime 11 (X68000, 1994, Silence) - There are 12 installments in this series, but some of the games don't seem to exist anywhere on the Internet. From the ones I could find, this one seems to have the most complete soundtrack.
Storm (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NutZL4AV_o8), Iconoclast (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RK2Vx5l0fpM)

WHOA. Incredible. Thanks, dude!

Oh, here's a little trick, too:

If you open hoot.ini in a text editor, you can add a semicolon to the beginning of the "language=japanese.lng" line, and restart Hoot. All of the menus will now be in English! So it should look like this when you're done:

;language=japanese.lng

Easy peasy!

AudioPanicRoom - Episode #021: Kenichi Arakawa

Kenichi Arakawa is mostly known for his work on visual novels like Jewel Bem Hunter Lime or the Viper series. He got his start composing in the doujin scene, contributing music to a number of PC-88 disk mags under the alias Thomas Brown, before moving on to (mainly) work for Silence and its adult brands Sogna and C-Class. So now that you have listened to the podcast and are left wondering where you can find all of these soundtracks, look no further! I posted some of Arakawa's X68000 music with the last update, so here is the majority of his work on the PC-98:

Exciting Milk Dai 1 Wa (PC-9801 [OPNA], 1996, Silence) - Brought to you by the makers of Thrilling Potatoes and Inspiring Kale.

Exciting Milk Dai 2 Wa (PC-9801 [OPNA], 1997, Silence) - The sequel, most of the music actually comes from the first game though.

Jewel Bem Hunter Lime / Homa Hunter Lime (PC-9801 [OPN,OPNA], 1994, Silence) - My rip includes the music from all 12 games.

Mahjong Elegance (PC-9801 [OPN], 1994, C-Class)

Mahjong Sports Line (PC-9801 [OPN], 1996, C-Class)

Lemon Angel (PC-9801 [OPNA], 1995, Fairy Dust)

Viper-V10 RS (PC-9801 [OPNA], 1994, Sogna)

And finally two non-Arakawa soundtracks:

Mesuneko Hishoshitsu (PC-9801 [OPN], 1995, Melody) - By Yuki Nakayama (PANDA)

Here is EVE burst error (not my rip though):

EVE burst error (PC-9801 [OPNA], 1995, C's Ware) - I'm not sure where I originally got this from, but I *think* this is based on the EGG release. The music is by Ryu Umemoto with Ryu Takami also contributing a handful of tracks and it goes without saying that this is totally awesome stuff.

The Windows version has a MIDI soundtrack that sounds pretty good as well, but I don't have the the time to record the 50+ tracks right now. Maybe something to keep in mind for later though.

Last Ninja 3 (Amiga, 1991, System 3) - Like the C64 version, this was composed by Reyn Ouwehand, but the music is entirely different.

Ultima VI: The False Prophet (Amiga, 1992, Origin) - Conversion of the DOS music by Matt Furniss
Intro (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=132lDhM8qQs)

Renegade (Amiga, 1992, Imagine) - The computer port of Nekketsu Koha Kunio-kun with original music by Tim Follin.

And two arcade games:

Asuka & Asuka (Arcade, 1988, Taito)

Terminator 2: Judgment Day (Arcade, 1991, Midway) - Music by Chris Granner, there is some overlap between this and his soundtrack for the T2 pinball game.

WHOA.

Easy peasy!

how do you figure something like that out..?

Hi, it's me again. I have an MSX Soundtrack request. Did you remember the PC-88 version of Last Armageddon? Well, now i'm searching for the MSX version of the Soundtrack. Could you help me with this please? :)

How about this?

Last Armageddon (MSX2 [OPLL], 1988, Brain Grey) - Not sure what is the definitive version of this soundtrack. Some tracks here sound better than the PC-88 release, others worse.

Hi no Tori: Hououhen / Firebird (MSX2, 1987, Konami) - Although based on the same manga, this is different from the Famicom release. Music by Motoaki Furukawa and Yoshinori Sasaki.

Wizardry V: Heart of the Maelstrom (FM Towns, 1990, Sir-tech Software) - Pretty impressive soundtrack played by a real orchestra. This was composed by Kohei Tanaka and is one of the few games he's worked on.

I think the versions released by Knurek always had this, but I don't know if he was actually the first one to use it.

I managed to create the raw WAV files, but then I got sidetracked by other things. It's not an overly long soundtrack though, so hopefully I can post it at some point this week.

OK. Cool. :D I just wish NCS made more games on the X68000 besides the game I mentioned, Lightning Vaccus and Signatory, but I guess it was because it was a very expensive computer to develop software for back then.

History of Elthlead (X68000, 1989, NCS) - Strategy game that is sort of a precursor of Masaya's Langrisser series.

Dinosaur (FM Towns, 1991, Falcom) - Wizardry-like dungeon crawler with music by Mieko Ishikawa and Masaaki Kawai. The FM Towns music sounds a little bit better than the OPN soundtracks of the PC88/98 releases.

You can download the CD tracks from here (http://hes.joshw.info/l/Last%20Armageddon%20(TCD)(1990-08-31)(Brain%20Grey).7z). I don't think anybody has created sound files for the rest of the music though. And in case you don't already have it, there is also a release on 3 CDs for the FM Towns (http://fmtowns.joshw.info/l/Last%20Armageddon%20CD%20Special%20(1989)(Brain%20 Grey).7z).

Well, I wanted to post two different batches of three requests, but since I am running out of time and there is only one day left until requests are closed again (and also due to the fact that I won't be online this site as much up until the weekend), I'm gonna have to combine my two batches into a single six requests thing (much to our chagrin, of course, but anyways...)

- Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Dragons of Flame (FM Towns, if possible; if not, then ignore this.)
- D' (aka D-Dash) (MSX. I think I've requested this before (or maybe to ruiner), but my memory is vague (I just had my 32nd birthday a few weeks ago, lol).)
- Feedback (MSX, Technosoft's attempt at Space Harrier.)
- Flying Shark (FM Towns, an adaptation of the Toaplan shmup.)
- Kabuki Z (Arcade, developed by Kaneko and published by Taito.)
- Kyukyoku Tiger (FM Towns, another Toaplan arcade adaptation.)

Again, my apologies for these, but I won't be online as much often until the weekend, and today's my only day off.

Anyways, take care for now, nx666! :)

Small request, would it be possible to get the Amiga and FM Towns of Turbo Outrun?

What's up with all these FM Towns requests? Just as a heads-up, while CD audio soundtracks are not a problem, things are looking pretty bad when it comes to anything using the internal sound chip. These soundtracks generally require a lot of manual work, so there is a bigger chance that I have to give them a pass.

Anyway, here are three of the more straightforward requests:

Turbo OutRun (FM Towns, 1989, CRI) - Pretty good CD arrangements of the arcade soundtrack.

Turbo OutRun (Amiga, 1989, U.S.Gold) - The Amiga conversion by Dave Lowe. Half of the arcade soundtrack is missing, and was is there doesn't sound too great either.

Flying Shark (FM Towns, 1993, Ving)

More requests:

Kabuki-Z (Arcade, 1988, Taito) - Kaneko-developed beat'em-up with music by Tatsuya Watanabe

Kyukyoku Tiger / Twin Cobra (FM Towns, 1994, Ving) - This comes with the original arcade soundtrack plus an arranged version that sounds pretty good. There are a few extra tracks as well, but I couldn't figure out how (or if) they are used in the game.

Feedback (MSX2 [OPLL], 1988, Tecnosoft) - The FM Pac version of this soundtrack, composed by Tec(h)nosoft veteran Naosuke Arai

D' (MSX2, 1988, Tecnosoft) - This sounds pretty basic, at least compared with the PC-88 version. The original compositions are by Arai, but I don't know if he did the MSX implementation as well.

Metajo (PC-9801 [86], 1996, Anjin) and Zai Metajo (PC-9801 [86], 1996, Anjin) - Two strategy RPGs that remind me a little bit of the Langrisser series. The music is really good and has a slightly electronic feel to it.

TFX (MS-DOS [CD Audio], 1993, Ocean) - For the most part this is an arrangement of the MT-32 soundtrack plus a few new tracks. Pretty awesome 80s synth by Barry Leitch and Dean Evans.

I have a request- that is if you have the time. Could you upload all of the X68000 WOLFTEAM MT-32 versions of Arcus Odyssey, Granada, Ryu naki no Yori, Dino Land, Final Zone and Sol-Feace? If you have already done some of them, just let me know, and that is fine. By the way, any good suggestions for RPG and strategy game soundtracks for the X68000, PC88 and PC98 that I have not mentioned that has good music?

AudioPanicRoom - Episode #025: CP Verlag Chronicles

In the early 90s the C64 gaming market started to dry up as most developers had moved on to 16 bit computers and consoles. This gap was partially filled by a number of disk magazines, like those issued by German publisher CP Verlag. And while the games on these disks were usually nothing to write home about; their soundtracks, often created by people from the demo scene, were a last hurrah for game music on the C64.

I think these are rips of the OSTs, but I'm not entirely sure:

FZ Senki Axis (X68000 [OPM/MSM,MT-32,CM-64], 1990, Telenet)

Granada (X68000 [OPM/MSM,MT-32], 1990, Telenet)

Sol-Feace (X68000 [OPM/MSM,MT-32,CM-64], 1990, Wolfteam)

I'm not sure which games you have mentioned so far, but from what I remember there was a pretty big list at some point :) There are still quite a few RPG/strategy games for these systems in my backlog, hopefully I will be able to post them at some point.

Well, from what I checked on Hoot, Gulf War, three Ten-bu games on the PC-98, and other games on it also use the MT-32. The other games I have mentioned are Arcus Odyssey, Ryu Naki no Yori and Dino Land. There are a lot of games that use the MT-32 on the PC-98 too as well on the X68000 that WOLF TEAM composed. I would like those.

As long as we're talking about Wolf Team, anyone know where can I find Final Zone II? You'd think with the infamous "localization" it'd be a little more accessible, but I haven't been able to find it anywhere. I know you don't handle really handle PC Engine stuff but as long as we're on the subject I figure someone here would be able to point me in the right direction. And yes Final Zone II isn't Wolf Team, but it's close enough :p

Forgive me for being weird, but I liked Telenet's localization of Final Zone II and Last Alert on the PC-Engine. And WOLF TEAM would've still be around if Telenet didn't screw up on their sales and their games. THEY would've been the ones to publish AND develop Tales of Phantasia instead of giving it to a famous company like Namco. But they had no choice because Telenet kept messing up and screwing up on their games and sales.

Here is an old rip that I made a few years back. In terms of quality this should still be ok (it's all CD audio), and I updated the tags to match the newer soundtracks. To be honest, the vast majority of the early CD games have pretty hilarious voice acting and vocal songs. Come to think of it, that would actually be a pretty good idea for a podcast: cheesy vocal themes from early CD games. There are some real gems out there.

To tell the truth, I like the hilarious voice acting. I find it better than the voice acting done by the famous voice actors.

Just wanted to jump in here and say that I love Audio Panic Room. Found it through itunes and I'm loving it. Thanks for putting together some great playlists.

P.S. I also found the B.Rap Boys soundtrack you put together on youtube. THANK YOU! I was looking for a good rip of that very hard a couple of years ago. Just wish we knew a bit more about the composing of it.

Thanks guys. I wish I had more time for new rips but sadly that hasn't really been the case lately. I'm also currently sitting on a pile of half-done soundtracks that I wan't to finish before I start anything new and I hope to get at least some of that done this week. Things are looking a bit better for December though so maybe I'll be able to fit in another round of requests.

Some more backlog cleaning with a handful of new PC soundtracks:

Sub Culture (Windows, 1997, Ubi Soft) - This was a pretty awesome game, kinda like Elite in an underwater setting. The music is fantastic as well, if you like the Ecco soundtracks then you should definitely check this one out.

Commander Blood (MS-DOS, 1994, Microfolie's) - The sequel to Captain Blood, composed by Stphane Picq and Philippe Egret. Some great tracks, the only downside is the poor sound quality of the source files.

Maui Mallard in Cold Shadow (Windows, 1996, Disney Interactive) - Most people are probably more familiar with the console versions of this soundtrack by Michael Giacchino. The PC release features the same compositions re-arranged in CD audio quality.

SimIsle: Missions in the Rainforest (MS-DOS, 1995, Maxis) - There are some pretty interesting electronic tracks in this game, something you wouldn't necessarily expect from a Sim-type release of this era.

AudioPanicRoom - Episode #026: Hiroaki Sano

Hiroaki Sano spent much of his early career composing for visual novels of publishers like Discovery or Studio Twinkle. As a master of both FM synth and MIDI arrangements, his soundtracks are pretty good showcases for the stylistic diversity within the music of this genre. This podcast features a selection of tracks that he composed for the PC-9801.

I think my favorite soundtrack he did was Possessioner.

Having just listened to all of his PC-98 soundtracks over the last two weeks, I think the picks of the bunch are Hinadori no Saezuri, Mime, Yakusoku no Chi (for MIDI) and Valkyrie (for FM). But that's splitting hairs, pretty much all of his soundtracks range from good to spectacular. Possessioner is awesome as well, although half of the tracks were composed by Masahiro Kajihara. So I guess that actually makes it double awesome :)

Also, if anybody has any requests then feel free to post them until Sunday

This is probably a long shot, but I guess it won't hurt to ask. I have a video game music channel on YouTube and someone recently asked me if I could upload music from Gunbee F-99: The Kidnapping of Lady Akiko for the Commodore Amiga. I couldn't find the soundtrack anywhere and I would like to ask if it's possible for you to rip it.

EDIT: It appears to be a homebrew game that is still commercially sold. Nevermind then.

Gunbee F-99: The Kidnapping of Lady Akiko (Amiga, 1998, APC&TCP) - For the most part this is a pretty competent port of Detana TwinBee. The soundtrack is completely different though, including a Devo cover for the first stage. This game was made in Peru, which also makes this the first South American soundtrack to be featured here.

I can't find a disk image for Dungeon Hack. Going by this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2StUQz_oVNI) the intro music is the same as in the DOS version (which had very little music to begin with), but I don't know if they made any other changes to the PC-98 soundtrack. I got some requests. I was going to request some yesterday, and then another request Saturday before the deadline for requests stopped on Sunday, but I never had the time to do so, so I will combine these into one (my apologies for it, too).

- Guardian (Arcade; an unusual Taito beat-'em up where you travel to various planets and beat up aliens.)
- Holosseum (Arcade; an unusual fighting game by Sega that utilises four different fighting styles. Made with the same technology they used for Time Traveler.)
- The Karate Tournament (Arcade; a strange fighting game by Mitchell. Your player is based on the legendary Andy Hug apparently.)
- The Persian Gulf Inferno (Amiga; an unusual game where you go and stop terrorists at an oil rig.)
- Robo Army (Arcade; SNK beat-em up with cyborgs and the like.)
- The Transformers: Battle to Save the Earth (Commodore 64; the second video game to feature the Robots in Disguise. Is it possible to include the narration that plays at the beginning of the game, just to make it feel complete?)

Here are the last of the suggestions from this week. Karate Tournament is still too much work (and had been requested before) and Arcus Odyssey will have to wait until the next round of requests.

Shinsengumi: Bakumatsu Genshikou (PC-9801 [MT-32], 1991, Wolfteam)

Ryu: Naki no Ryuu Yori (X68000 [MT-32], 1991, Wolfteam) - I added this to the already existing FM version of the soundtrack

Transformers: The Battle to Save the Earth (C64, 1996, Activision) - The most remarkable thing about this game is the intro that spans a whole disk side and contains almost 2 minutes of speech. The track that I included here has all the loading pauses removed though.

Some C64 suggestions:

*Barbarian
*Barbarian II
*Castlevania
*Gradius
*Gryzor (aka Contra)
*Mayhem in Monsterland
*Nemesis (the shoot'em up that is, not Nemesis the Warlock, which is already in the list)
*Total Recall
*Transformers (the Ocean game)
*Ultima IV
*Yie Ar Kung Fu 2

I'm honestly surprised not to see Barbarian I & II, Mayhem in Monsterland, and Yie Ar Kung Fu 2 on the list, as they're considered C64 classics with great music. Castlevania, Gradius, Gryzor, Nemesis, and Ultima IV are not very well-known in their C64 versions, but would be a nice treat to hear for fans who know these classics on other systems. Anyway, some suggestions I hope you consider, would be awesome to hear these in SID stereo. :)

There is still a lot of good stuff missing in the C64 section; I currently have a backlog of about 200 soundtracks that I want to add eventually. And that's without even trying to make complete collections for some of the big-name composers. I also had to put some games on hold (like Castlevania, Metal Gear, or Barbarian II) because they are incomplete/missing in SOASC. They are currently running recordings for the latest version of HVSC, so hopefully I can post these soundtracks at some point.

OK, I figured as much. Didn't mean to sound ungrateful by the way, you've done some awesome work compiling all this stuff.

Hmm... I thought at least Castlevania was complete at SOASC? From the longplays I've seen of the game, it seems like they have all the music (I could be wrong, though).

Anyway, if I could put in just one request in this thread, I'd say Barbarian (the first one) on C64. Its a classic with a very good "Conan-meets-SID"-vibe soundtrack. Consider it.

Let's start with these two, if I have time I'll post a few more next week.

Barbarian: The Ultimate Warrior (C64, 1987, Palace Software) - One epic track that exists in three variations that are essentially just different starting points of the loop.

Gryzor (C64, 1988, Ocean) - The C64 port of Contra, only two tracks of the arcade version survive in this version.
