Hinadori no Saezuri (PC-9801 [SC-88],1997,Studio B-Room)

"Dred Burton was a railroad tycoon who lived in a mansion with many maids who were used to "serve" the guests of the house. Now he's dead, but there's a new boss in town and SHE'S just as bad as he was. The Maids are being forced into even more bizarre and debaucherous situations than ever before. How far will things go? When will the pleasurable tortures end?" - (MAL)

I don't know how far things will go, but I can tell you that this was composed by Hiroaki Sano and the orchestrated MIDI tracks are absolutely fantastic. Recorded with an SC-88.
In the Treacherous Sky (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gdzQ10nLCrc), Golden Moon (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ouiDFg-UzPU) <-- This is the somewhat inferior OPNA version

Kara no Naka no Kotori (PC-9801 [OPNA,OPL3,SC-88],1996,Black Package)

"Foster, formerly a trainer of high-class prostitutes for a secret political group that used these girls to exert power over politicians, has long been out of the game, as he and his cohorts were busted years back. However, Foster couldn't help himself and soon returned to his old profession. He began training new maidens, though this time with a distinctly evil bent, drawing the recruits into a sordid ring of discipline and bondage." - (ANN)

Another Hiroaki Sano soundtrack, I included the OPNA, OPL3, and MIDI (SC-88) versions, they all have their merits but I think the MIDI version comes out on top.
Drops Are Dots, Vessels Are Faces (OPNA) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdkarGS01zE)

Borobodur: The Planet of Doom (Amiga,1992,Thalamus) - Mix of action and racing game with music by Reinier van Vliet

Hi, nx666. You did great with all of your efforts. They sound excellent on my LG TONE INFINIM and two Bluetooth speakers: the Radio Shack LIT Speaker and the Pro Scan one found at Big Lots.

If you need more requests, here they are:

Star Cruiser II (PC-98, other versions than OPN)
Reikai Doushi (Arcade, Home Data/Magical Company)
Battlecry (Arcade, Home Data/Magical Company)

Thank you.

I liked Battlecry. It was Home Data's own foray into making a fighting game. Sure, it may have been a bad game, but I like it. Oh, and good news- I have found MORE PC-98 RPGs that are NOT pornographic.

I will explain them all later.

Let's finish this week with a look at Rob Hubbard's Adlib soundtracks. This is all pretty awesome stuff, especially considering how generally poor OPL2 music sounded at that time.

Kings of the Beach (MS-DOS [OPL2],1988,Electronic Arts)
Title Screen (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GTV3kTo-1E8)
As a bonus the Tandy RL version (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t2N7VLF0ZQo), this is a SN76496 + PCM

Kings of the Beach (C64,1988,Electronic Arts) - For comparison the C64 version, which (I think) was Rob Hubbard's last ever soundtrack for this system. On a technical level this is pretty impressive.
Title Screen (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xW09o3YaTsE)

688 Attack Sub (MS-DOS [OPL2],1989,Electronic Arts)
Title Screen (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-V9CYTIkU-Y)

Indianapolis 500 (MS-DOS [OPL2],1989,Electronic Arts)
Title Screen (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mFqmzVhsgcU)

Ski or Die (MS-DOS [OPL2],1990,Electronic Arts) - That's maybe the pick of the bunch. Awesome FM rock.
Title Theme (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49EI0ruXEVc), Innertube Thrash (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTK_iuXKRvQ)
Title Theme MT-32 (Bonus) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1sBq4E7BzQI) I love how the guitar sounds like a sax in this version.

Are you thinking of Matt Furniss? But yes, Hollingworth is usually forgotten when people talk about how great Furniss' Genesis music sounds. Same with Steve Ruddy who wrote the sound drivers for the Follins. It's always Tim Follin who "pushes hardware". The poor coders never get any credit.

Yes! Sorry, sometimes I get too familiar with these guys and forget that not everyone knows who I'm talking about! Anyways, that was my point exactly: Behind many great composers, there is (usually) an equally talented programmer with a fantastic sound driver.

Requesting

Federation of Free Traders (Amiga). Mostly for the fantastic title theme (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=102N1L9EolY). Other tracks are mostly classical music conversions (Vivaldi, Handel, Tchaikovsky). The game also came with an audio tape with a real composition of the title music (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sbed35FsrAM) recorded from professional synthesizers.

Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar (Amiga). The intro, overworld and towns tracks are excellent on Amiga (much better than the poorly emulated tracks I found on YouTube)

Future Wars - Time Travellers (Amiga). Another Delphine adventure game title with some good music.

nx666

Super Spacefortress Macross (Arcade,1992,Banpresto) - Great music by Kazunori Hideya and Manabu Namiki.
Stage 2 (https://youtu.be/r2Af8FocTLU?t=129), Stage 6 (Gameplay) (https://youtu.be/r2Af8FocTLU?t=868) <--- couldn't find videos with just the music

Out to Lunch (Amiga,1994,Mindscape) - Ported from the SNES version by Mark Knight.
Title (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_gT8x4RFzo)

Pandora (Amiga,1988,Firebird) - All the 1988 soundtracks by David Whittaker seem to use the same samples. This is very similar to Speedball, Menace, or Obliterator.
Title Screen (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RgPD929Qb1g)

Wolfchild (Amiga,1992,Core Design) - This is the original version of this game, scored by Martin Iveson.
Title (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-RsrAX5Dcc), Stage 5 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_2WzOmagUsk)

Federation of Free Traders (Amiga,1990,Gremlin) - Adaptations of classical music plus a pretty good title theme by Ben Daglish.
Title Theme (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=102N1L9EolY)

Future Wars: Time Travellers (Amiga,1989,Delphine) - Adventure game by Paul Cuisset (Flashback) and ric Chahi (Another World). Music by Jean Baudlot.
Title (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGNTiMET244), Suite 23 (https://youtu.be/GGNTiMET244?t=558)

Toumei Ningen Arawaru (PC-9801 [OPN],1993,Fairytale) - Another Fairytale visual novel with great music by Akira Sato (Muse). For whatever reason there are two near-identical sets of sound files that are both included in this rip.

Does this game even work correctly in WinUAE? I tried several different images (all cracks) and they all either have no music, the music is too slow (PAL), or distorted sound (NTSC).

Thanks for the soundtracks. I haven't personally attempted to emulate U4 and google does indicate that people have issues emulating the music accurately. Lemonamiga has a thread (http://www.lemonamiga.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9226&sid=2d0199fef05ddd07604ff800d91db474) with possible suggestions, but it's unclear whether they work.

I've seen that thread. The music sounds fine (but too slow) on a PAL system, but when I set the emulator to NTSC it all goes haywire. I suspect that might be a problem with the available disk images that are probably all based on the European release. Anyway, feel free to post other requests if you have any, I might look into this issue again once I find a working NTSC disk.

You don't need to find a MAME expert for most of these soundtracks, just someone with enough time on their hands to play through the game. I could write up a quick tutorial if you want to do it yourself.

ザコ戦闘 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7PCqLokuouA), Last Map for Valkyrie (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jHcrS-QJxl0)

Intro (with sfx) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4SlYxWmdPjE), In-Game BGM (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r385tMuVwjg)

The Settlers (MS-DOS [OPL2,SC-55],1994,Blue Byte) - The version I played the most. The in-game track is much shorter but I like the GM version of the intro a bit better.
Intro (Adlib) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Js8RPq4ff-w), Intro (GM) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L4yBTn0RHII) <-- mine sounds better

Grand Striker: Human Cup (Arcade,1993,Human) - Looks similar to the Formation Soccer games on consoles. Neither Hoot nor M1 seem to be able to play all the songs correctly so I had to redo a handful of tracks in MAME.
BGM #15 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dSd40BDdk4I)

Shanghai Kid (Arcade,1985,Taito) - Just two short tracks in this fighting game.

OK. Well, I don't necessarily know how "kick ass" they are, since that's ALL gamers care about, but l'll go ahead and put together the list of them:

Rune Worth 2: Excellent Soundtrack by T&E Soft. They made a 3rd game, but it mostly uses the music from the 2nd one again for the PC-98.
Mercury: The Prime Master: One of Hayato Matsuo's early soundtracks along with Taku Iwasaki's. They also made a sequel, but I have not been able to find the music for it.
Fifth Element- Tamashii no Genso
Fifth Element 2: Hikari to Yami no Ouji
Free Will- Knight of Argent
Gal Act Heroism ( A good soundtrack from MICRO CABIN, creators of the Xak series)
Ki: Aku no RPG
Faladia
The Story of King Aress (Gust's very first game ever created before they moved onto the Playstation.)
Kigen: Kagayaki no Hasha
King's Dungeon: The Story of Heroes (Wasn't too particularly impressed with that soundtrack.)
K.O. Seiki Beast Sanjuushi: Gaia no Fukkatsu
K.O. Seiki Beast Sanjuushi: Rastak no Joou
Legam
Legend of Shalice
Libros de Chilam Balam (another RIGHT STUFF Corporation soundtrack.)
Dragon Souseki
Provvidenza: Legenda la Spada di Alfa
Estoria
Wolfish Gallop: Legacy of the Solomon
Sword Lord PC (PC-98 Version of Sword World, made also by T&E SOFT. Completely different from the Super Famicom versions and its sequel.)
Elves (I know, cheap name, but it is an RPG nevertheless.)
Nobushi
Oerstedia
POWER SINGER- Ellance Saga #1 (Excellent RPG made by System Sacom for the PC-98 where you play as a bard, hence the name "POWER SINGER". It was made in 1992, and I do not know if it was the last soundtrack Manabu Saito composed before he passed away later that year.)
Princess Minerva (PC-98 version)
Puliton
Rarve
Revery: Izanai no Masuishou (Another game from RIGHT STUFF.)
RPG Lu Bu Monogatari
RPG Shinsengumi
RPG Wei Wu Shu Shi
The Golem Master
The Knights: Avalon no Kishi
The Knights 2: Little Light from Nowhere
Vain Dream (Made by Glodia)
Vain Dream 2 (Also made by Glodia)
Zavas (Made by Popcom Soft.)
Zavas 2 (Popcom Soft's final game.)

That is all I know that are not pornographic. As long as those pornographic games DO NOT have song titles that can get me into trouble with the FBI or who are well... dirty, I am OK in terms of music...

Update on Rune Worth 3: Most tracks are recycled from Rune Worth 2, but there are a small few that are original. In other words, Rune Worth 3 is a expansion pack for Rune Worth 2, since at the end of Rune Worth 2, it said "TO BE CONTINUED". I have found some from Glodia also that should be good soundtracks-Different Realm, Alvaleak Continent - Heartful Comedietta RPG, Ragnarokkr, Bible Master 1 and 2, and Etemible - Tenjou Mukyuu They love to use a lot of MIDI on their soundtracks, since some of their games from 1993-1995 do use MIDI output, so those or the OPNA soundtracks are the better options.

Oh, you know, I bet it didn't have anything to do with Hentai. There are a lot of Japanese games out there (Like Lagrange Point on the Famicom) that have characters named Isis, or revolve around the Egyptian god Isis, the deity of fertility and motherhood. It's possible that a song title had something to do with her, and because she shares the name with the terrorist group, he was playing it safe by not uploading any videos with that word in it.

Either that, or he was joking and it wasn't obvious that he was. Pornography isn't illegal in the US unless it features real people that are underage, or is of people who haven't given their permission to be filmed. Animated hentai falls under neither of those categories. I don't think you have anything to worry about in terms of legality! :)

Look, nobody here thinks you are an asshole. But your fear of the government (assuming you live in the US) or the FBI over 'erotic' song titles is completely unfounded. I can assure you that none of this is even remotely illegal! How you feel about this personally is, of course, your own decision. Feel free to rename such songs if they bother you :)

This is a list currently of the most kick-ass RPG soundtracks for the PC-98 that I have found.

First, is Legam. This RPG uses a GS MIDI soundtrack as well as FM, but the most superior is the Vermouth version.

The Vermouth option is essentially just a way to play back MIDI soundtracks with a sound font, most Hoot installations actually use Gravis Ultrasound patches for this. In principle this isn't much different from using the GM/GS option with whatever MIDI device/sound font you have installed in Windows. And to be honest, I would prefer to record this with a real GS unit (I have an SC-55 and SC-88) as the most authentic option and the device that the music was most likely written for.

This is 'Main Feled' from Legam (https://mega.nz/#!nQQVBbiR!RVN_AHBSk8sg9ZjYuAznmmtBb6GDN2KmTgTHHaTFgnE), recorded with an SC-55.

To nx666:

Yes, you are right, I do tend to fly off the handle too quickly. I am sorry, that's just how my family was raised- to not like anything pornographic and dirty.

Oh, so THAT's what Vermouth is- no wonder why it is so hard to install GUS patches for it.

I've just listened to it, and it sounds awesome! Man, Hoot's GS emulation is poor... And I can't seem to install Timidity in order to make it better- it is also too difficult.

Hoot doesn't really emulate GM/GS, when you play one of these soundtracks then the MIDI data is sent to your default MIDI device. And, unless you have something else installed, that's going to be the one that comes with Windows. You can get much better sound quality by installing a 3rd-party driver (e.g. BassMIDI) that can load different sound fonts.

To be fair, I've seen way worse, especially on this forum. Some people go to great lengths to make sure they never listen to some of the best music around.

I see.

Sure, I would like Masaharu Kajihara's, Ryu Umemoto's, Shinji Orito's, Manabu Kunieda's , Hiroaki Sano's and Toyo Kusanagi's music a lot more if they never worked at those companies that made those trashy, smutty, dirty, pornographic games, such as Elf, D.O. and C's Ware for example. Granted, their music is very good, but its just those games were pornographic. I would suggest music from them, but I do not like seeing dirty hentai screenshots from Tokugawa Corp. to find out about if the game is an RPG or not in order for me to request the soundtrack or to give it a listen in Hoot. Anyway, I just want to end this little discussion now. I won't be talking about it any longer.

Anyway, why even care? nx666 uploads music, we listen to it. That's all. I usually don't even trying to find out what game is it unless it's SHMUP. (i'm not replying you, more like talking to myself)

I honestly don't get the point of Vermouth. It's just MIDI played with a (fairly antiquated) sound font. If you want just that, why don't you use one of the much better sound fonts that are available today?

Btw, I'm currently recording the SC-55 version of Star Cruiser 2 for you.

Hello, nx666! Thanks for those uploads last week. Got some new Arcade request again for you!!! X-D

- Mad Motor (One of Mitchell Corp's earliest games, where you ride a motorcycle and bash away at enemies (sort of like a psuedo-early version of Road Rash). The game ends after the ending, so there is no staff information on who made this game. BTW, when you do certain things in the game, your guy turns into a pissed-off oni-like demon, lol.)
- Super Spacefortress Macross II (While a sequel to the first game, this one is based off the Macross II anime.)

Well, that's all for now, but I got more requests in store after this. :)

Legam (PC-9801 [SC-88],1995,U-Office) - Typical RPG soundtrack with some really nice tracks. This is the GS version of the music, recorded with an SC-88.

Hm, think you can get the soundtrack to 46 Okunen Monogatari for the PC-98?

nx666

46 Okunen Monogatari: The Shinka Ron (PC-9801 [OPN],1990,Enix)- The predecessor of Evo: Search for Eden (SNES). The music was composed by Koichi Sugiyama and many (all?) tracks have been used in the sequel as well.
Title Screen (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DKMtULTDjiA), Ocean (https://youtu.be/DKMtULTDjiA?t=636), Sea Tunnel (https://youtu.be/DKMtULTDjiA?t=867), Victory (https://youtu.be/DKMtULTDjiA?t=411)

Princess Minerva (PC-9801 [OPNA],1992,Riverhill Soft) - This seems to have a lot more music than the later console ports. Composed by Hiroaki Iwatani.
Opening Sequence (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akA1gKQqTdo) <-- NSFW, contains some nudity

I couldn't do The Karate Tournament (Arcade) due to some weird sfx that play over the songs in the sound test. It's doable, but would require too much manual work for now.

Also, as of next week I will have to temporarily suspend new requests. However, anything you submit before Monday will still get completed.

Thank goodness I have some more arcade requests for you!!

- Gardia (Another shmup developed by Coreland and licensed by Sega. I saw the longplay of this yesterday on YouTube and noticed how good the music was compared to Rafflesia.)
- Karate Blazers (A beat-em-up by V-System. Has some good tunes for a sub-par brawler, lol.)
- Zing Zing Zip (Another Allumer created shmup. The tracks have some good hard rock riff samples, but like Blandia and Rezon, are looped. Thank goodness Mad Shark's music, while not sampled, was much better songwise, as it wasn't looped endless.)

And these are my requests for now. :)

Thanks for Kigen and Princess Minerva. I have 3 last requests-
Libros de Chilam Balam for the PC-98
Rune Worth 2 and 3 for the PC-98

If they cannot be done because of the schedule next week, that's OK, I can wait.

There are now over 1000 soundtracks in the OP! Let's celebrate this occasion with another round of awesome Spectrum beeper music:

Dark Fusion (ZX Spectrum,1988,Gremlin Graphics) - Proto-techno by Ben Daglish. It's kinda mind blowing that this is a song from 1988.
Title Screen (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RXHGsLOqtPY)

Firefly (ZX Spectrum,1988,Ocean) - 'Beeper Metal' by Jonathan Smith and Keith Tinman
Title Screen 1 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mF_4Ax-oKks), Title Screen 2 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KH4-m_Hxp8g)

BraveStarr (ZX Spectrum,1987,GO!) - More beeper metal. This wouldn't feel out of place on the Doom soundtrack. Composed by David Whittaker
Title Screen (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SncFU_RIjgs)

Zanthrax (ZX Spectrum,1989,W.A.S.P) - By Lyndon Sharp
Title Screen (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E2PBxmc7YT4)

And one request:

Gardia (Arcade,1986,Sega) - Xevious-inspired shmup for the System 1 board.

Champions of Krynn (PC-9801 [OPN], 1992, Pony Canyon) - The Dragonlance scenario was probably my favorite Gold Box series. The PC-98 version has a completely new soundtrack, composed by Takeshi Yasuda and arranged by Hitoshi Sakimoto.
Intro (https://youtu.be/-ifdkBgKIao?t=48), Normal Battle (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LXP1Jd_MRv4)

Death Knights of Krynn (PC-9801 [OPN], 1993, Pony Canyon) - The second part in this series, also scored by Yasuda/Sakimoto.
Intro (https://youtu.be/yxeJzsCJmZ4?t=12), Dungeon 1 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsI0B6kz2I0)

Zing Zing Zip (Arcade,1992,Allumer) - Just a handful of really short tracks with shredding guitars and low quality X1-010 samples.
Stage BGM #1 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z8yAdk8GILY)

02-10-2016, 12:34 AM
Kamui (Windows [OPL3,SC-88], 1999, Siter Skain) - Pretty good doujin shmup for Windows. Included is the FM soundtrack and the - imo much better - MIDI version.
Area 1 (SC-88) (https://youtu.be/XIPM6F8omgg?t=33), Area 4 (SC-88) (https://youtu.be/XIPM6F8omgg?t=744)

Rune Worth 2: Jikuu no Shinsen (PC-9801 [OPN], 1991, T&E) - This soundtrack might have a few duplicate tracks and I'm not 100% sure about the composer either.
BGM #03 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w0xrb0tiKPg), BGM #04 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iSZS31vweLM), BGM #10 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a_eTt3IqKS0)

Jim Power in Mutant Planet (Amiga, 1992, Loriciel) - The original rip by ruiner was missing a few tracks so I made a new one. Check it out if you haven't, it's a really good Chris Hlsbeck soundtrack.
Title Screen (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GjvaF1rs93s), Level 1 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8VcKqKMF130)

Xenophobe (Amiga, 1989, Micro Style) - A Barry Leitch soundtrack that is very different from his C64 version.
Title Screen (https://youtu.be/99QRFE6fKp8?t=46), Stage 1 (https://youtu.be/PHQ7nZggpqk?t=190)

Big Run (Amiga, 1991, Storm) - Conversion of the Jaleco arcade game with music by Jolyon Myers. Only two tracks, but both are pretty good.
Loading (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XqTrInVK3w), Title Screen (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mmWh0X_e9VM)

I started to update some of the older C64 rips with better edits, improved tags, and/or added stereo tracks: Puzzlenoid, Chimera, Bee 52, Underground, Rock'n Roll.

Rune Worth 3: Shinsei Kikourin (PC-9801 [OPN], 1991, T&E Soft) - This has significantly less music than the prequel.

Frightmare (C64, 1988, Cascade Games) - One of my personal favorites, aka the 'Bolero' of SID music: a 10-minute tune with a fairly repetitive rhythmic pattern, interspersed with short but very effective pieces of melody. Composed by Jeroen Kimmel.
Title Screen (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zz-yWjUk1pQ) <-- Just let this run in the background for a while, you'll see what I mean.

Arkanoid (C64, 1987, Imagine) - Arcade conversion by Martin Galway, this was the first C64 game with sampled instruments. Although that technique had existed earlier, it hadn't been used in game music up to that point. The drum samples don't sound particularly great as they are actually generated in real time, but Galway released an updated version later with samples from a real drum machine.
Title Screen (Alternate Drums) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D3fIlBiBYkA)

Bad Cat (C64, 1987, Rainbow Arts) - The other candidate for 'first SID tune with samples'. This came out a few weeks after Arkanoid but used proper drum samples. The music was composed by Chris Hlsbeck and is partially based on this song (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wfik2eWywxo).
Title Screen (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gcwuEVnMUvM)

And a few updated C64 soundtracks: Loopz, Eliminator, Stormlord, Sanxion, Rolling Ronny

Some more Jochen Hippel soundtracks for the Atari ST.

Enchanted Land (Atari ST, 1990, Thalion) - The original version of this game. There are a few tracks that the Amiga version doesn't have and the Game Over theme is a good as ever.
Game Over (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E-jnqWrmMTs)

Rings of Medusa (Atari ST, 1989, Starbyte Software) - I think this was also originally on the ST and then ported to the Amiga. The ST version has an additional intro track.
Intro (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7W_WI-ze04)

The Return of Medusa (Atari ST, 1991, Starbyte Software) - The sequel, included here are a couple of unused tracks.
Intro (https://youtu.be/Yu7MfQe7DP0?t=61)

Stormlord (Atari ST, 1989, Hewson) - A pretty faithful conversion of the great Manics of Noise C64 soundtrack. The intro uses Hippel's trademark PCM driver.
Intro (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CO7cZr-hNFs), In-Game BGM (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MsUE7qxBYrY)

And a few updated C64 soundtracks: Atomino, Cybernoid, Cybernoid II, Dominator, Gauntlet III

Hello, nx666. Enjoying your latest releases of awesome music so far. I know you're not yet ready to take requests again, but when you do, I got several ideas in mind...

I just recently downloaded the two Krynn soundtracks and listened to them and was amazed at how Hitoshi Sakimoto made brilliant music for ports of an old PC game. Today, I was reading up on Dungeons & Dragons video games on YouTube and noticed that nine other D&D games were ported to the PC-9800 (sadly, the third and final game of the Krynn trilogy "The Black Queen of Krynn" wasn't one of them). So, expect to see some of those names in my requests once they are open again.

Oh, and listening to the "Ending" track on "Champions of Krynn", it sounds like Mr. Sakimoto took bits and pieces of "Oh Canada!" (the country where I live) to make a song out of it, lol. :P

I can try to look into the other AD&D soundtracks, most (or all?) of them seem to exist as VGM files so they would be very easy to do. Only a handful were arranged by Sakimoto though and not all of them are as good as the two that I posted earlier (imo).

That sounds nice.

Oh BTW, Yuzo Koshiro did the music for the PC-9800 version of "Eye of the Beholder". I forgot about that tidbit of info until now (the Wikipedia article on the game mentions it in the detailed info bar).

Welcome to AudioPanicRoom, a podcast about the dangers of sustained exposure to old-ass computer and video game music.

Well, it's actually more like a glorified mixtape. The first episode is 45 minutes of personal favorites with some demo tunes thrown in for good measure. I'm still working on a website, so right now Youtube is the only way to listen to this. If you prefer an offline version there is a link to an mp3 file in the description of the video or you could just download this one (https://mega.nz/#!qARzBQ7S!KBtt-JjSoH1NtMJMGWVqYZh3xWbacfX-NAAL5slFYgE).

Youtube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J_7RpOruQpE)

Any kind of feedback is welcome of course.

Level BGM 1 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gENLAqpL3Q)

Trantor: The Last Stormtrooper (ZX Spectrum, 1987, Go!) - This was a pretty popular action game with a beeper soundtrack by David Whittaker.

Eye of the Beholder (PC-9801, 1992, Pony Canyon) - Dungeon Master with the AD&D license. I found very different information on the composers. Most sources credit Yuzo Koshiro and Yuji Yamada, but I also saw Hitoshi Sakimoto mentioned. It's mostly atmospheric stuff that isn't all that great imo.

Explosive Breaker (Arcade, 1992, Kaneko) - I found some sound files for this game, which (I think) was also a request at some point.

Also new is an improved version of Rhyme Star (PC-9801), the old soundtrack had some problems playing samples correctly in certain tracks.

I finished the Pool and Krynn series on C64/DOS back in the day but I've never actually played the PC-98 versions. Are there any differences apart from the graphics and music? I think the best way to play these games today is probably this (http://personal.inet.fi/koti/jhirvonen/gbc/) which adds some welcome features like automapping and instant heal.

Not really, from what I have watched on YouTube, the games are the same, but everything is translated in Japanese. The Japanese versions have the better music, but I haven't heard how well the C64 or DOS/IBM soundtracks sound like in terms of music. Dragons of Flame is yet another SSI RPG reprogrammed by Pony Canyon for the PC-98 and also composed by Hitoshi Sakimoto and Takeshi Yasuda.

Dragons of Flame (PC-9801, 1991, Pony Canyon) - This was the second part of an action RPG series based on the Dragonlance AD&D scenario. From what I remember, the game was pretty bad though. It looks like Takeshi Yasuda and Hitoshi Sakimoto were Pony Canyon's go-to guys for all the Dragonlance games as they composed this one as well. They also did the prequel, Heroes of the Lance, which seems to be impossible to find on the Internet. If anybody has disk images for this game, let me know.
Intro (https://youtu.be/LSHJGvXFwzc?t=19)

Madou Gakuin R (PC-9801, 1994, Foresight) - RPG by Foresight. Good stuff but I couldn't find any information on the composer.
BGM002 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mycnHaFla_o), BGM003 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABni7njbyHk)

Miwaku no Chousho (PC-9801 [SC-88], 1995, Black Package)

The protagonist, a young man named Shinnosuke, discovers a beautiful mansion, in which apparently a large-scale party is taking place. Determined to meet and enchant some beautiful women, he ventures into the mansion.
Can you guess what happens next? Anyway, this is a visual novel with music by Hiroaki Sano and like his other MIDI soundtracks this is pretty great.

Updated C64 soundtracks: Action Biker, Battle of Britain, Flimbo's Quest, Formula 1 Simulator, Ghosts'n Goblins

I'm currently hosting a C64 / Akira Yamaoka rumble (Thread 66118) that could use a few more participants. All you have to do is: listen to 4 tracks, vote for your 2 favorites, and hopefully learn something about C64 / Yamaoka music in the process. The rumble will get updated once or twice a week and there is also a bonus demo scene track every round for your listening pleasure. Don't miss it!

Princess Maker: Faery Tales Come True (Windows [CD Audio, SC-88, OPL3], 1998, Ninelives) - Another great Masahiro Kajihara soundtrack that has been in the making for a while. Included are all three versions of the music: CD Audio, MIDI, and FM.
Faery Tales Come True (CD Audio) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2QdCOCnBH_4)

Hillsfar (PC-9801, 1990, Pony Canyon) - An AD&D mini-game collection that was supposed to bridge Pool of Radiance and Curse of the Azure Bonds.
Title (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dXNa06G7EfQ)

DragonStrike (PC-9801, 1992, Pony Canyon) - Maybe the most creative use of the AD&D license: a dragon flight simulator.

Requests are open again for one week (until Sunday), however, the rules will be slightly different this time:

a) You can request the usual 3 soundtracks for any system I support, this includes soundtracks for MS-DOS games as well

b) In addition, you can request up to 5 for the systems that are currently somewhat underrepresented, these are in particular: Atari 8-bit, Atari ST, PC-8801, ZX Spectrum.

Age of Wonders (Windows, 1999, Gathering of Developers) - Part one of this strategy series with orchestral tracker music by Michiel van den Bos.
Title (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9o-7rPnZhXo)

Eol-ui Moheom (MS-DOS [OPL2], 1995, Gameland) - Also known as Eol's Adventure, a cute Korean platformer with a pretty good FM soundtrack.
Opening (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sAYF282WMLw)

Outer Ridge (MS-DOS, 1995, Wizard Software) - Some sort of an 3d Asteroids, the music is by demo scener Karsten Koch.
Music 2 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uw9a65q8Grk)

GaoGao! 4th Canaan: Yakusoku no Chi (PC-9801 [SC-88], 1997, 4x9) - The fourth installment of this series was composed by Hiroaki Sano, and the GS version is once again pretty awesome.

7 Colors (PC-9801 [OPN], 1992, Hot-B) - I remember the DOS version which used Adlib renditions of classical music for its soundtrack. The PC-98 release has completely new compositions by Hayato Matsuo and Hitoshi Sakimoto.
BGM #3 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Wf1cVsv-uU)

Tatakae! Konyanko EX (X68000, 1995, Nankoku Byouyou) - Doujin fighting game with cat girls and great music.

I currently don't take requests for MSX games, and you can get the PCE/TG16 and PC-88 soundtracks from ruiner's thread (Thread 138495). The PC-88 soundtrack is the OPN music, there is also an OPNA version that I could do, but that one only has some minor differences (the 3 PSG channels are emulated in FM). Feel free to request something else if you want :)

Hey, nx666, it's been a while! Anyway, I come with a single request: A while back in Ruiner's thread, I requested a rip for a X68000 game called Ku2. The game has two "halves", if you will: A "Serious" mode, which I guess can be considered the normal game, and a "Comical" mode, which is something like the game's easy mode. Anyway, Ruiner already got the Serious mode soundtrack, but now that he's no longer taking requests, can I ask if it's possible for you to rip the Comical tracks? If it helps, I know there's also an FM Towns version of the game, but I've no clue whether or not it's easier to obtain than the X68k version. Thanks in advance for looking into it!

I found a PC-88 OPNA soundtrack that has 50+ tracks that I could do. Not sure about the PC Engine version, but that isn't really my area of expertise anyway. Maybe some of the music is hidden in the cut scenes of that game and does not actually exist as a separate audio track? As far as I know, there is no TG16 version as this game was only released in Japan.

All the FM soundtracks seem to have been ported with zero effort and don't really make use of their respective sound chips. The OPNA version just emulates the 3 PSG channels of the OPN chip in FM, no other changes were done to the music.

Title Theme (https://youtu.be/ZeCA0Fvrg4s?t=176)

Batman (ZX Spectrum, 1989, Ocean) - This was also done by Matthew Cannon. The music for stage 3 sounds a bit broken, I probably need to check this again with an emulator at some point.

Batman (Atari ST, 1989, Ocean) - Jonathan Dunn ported the soundtrack to the Atari. Despite using the same sound chip, this actually sounds a bit worse.

Euphory (Sharp X1, 1987, System Sacom) - An early Manabu Saito soundtrack for the Sharp X1.
Submarine Labyrinth (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=biY_CpsLf-k), Negative Zone (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UTkzIhc_X70)

Ferill X1 (Sharp X1, 1989) - I've never actually seen this version of the game. All I know is the soundtrack and the original PC-88 release.

Illusion Blaze (MS-DOS, 1994, SKC Soft Land) - Side-scrolling shmup, developed by Family Production with music by D.A.C.
Opening (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYCA-R4OBJk)

Iron Blood (MS-DOS, 1996, Microforum International) - Another Family Production/D.A.C game. This one is an action game with mechs, similar to the Assault Suit series.
Select (https://youtu.be/QLq2NY6KZsU?t=96)

And one updated C64 soundtrack: Hollywood or Bust

Kageki (Arcade, 1988, Taito) - Isometric fighting game developed by Kaneko.

Hydlide II: Shine of Darkness (Sharp X1, 1985, T&E Soft) - The PC-88 release seems to be beeper only, so I did this version instead.

Saint Dragon (ZX Spectrum, 1990, Storm) - Only one track, which is a conversion of the first stage music from the arcade game.
Title (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ws2-hVfoagc)

Operation Wolf (ZX Spectrum, 1988, Ocean) - Converted from the arcade game by Jonathan Dunn. Not much to see here, just a few short jingles.

Operation Wolf (C64, 1988, Ocean) - Also by Jonathan Dunn, this one has an original piece that plays on the title screen.

Zavas 2: Mehite no Dai Yogen (PC-9801 [SC-55], 1993, Glodia) - Music by Nobuhito Koise and Ikki Nakamura. The music was probably composed for MIDI so I went with the GS version of the soundtrack.

Master of Monsters (PC-8801, 1988, System Soft) - The first game in this series, there is not much music except for the opening and ending tunes.

Roller Aces / Fighting Roller (Arcade, 1983, Taito) - Early Kaneko game.

Most of Glodia's later soundtracks used the SC-55. Thanks for Zavas 2. I will probably ask for more soundtracks in the future when you accept requests again. I am thinking of requesting all of the RPGs done by Fuga System next time. Most of them are composed by Izuru Aki.

Inferno (MS-DOS [CDAudio, MT-32], 1994, Ocean) - The sequel to Epic with music composed by Alien Sex Fiend and Barry Leitch. I included the MT-32 soundtrack as well, a pretty awesome conversion of the CD audio tracks. There is a making-of video (https://youtu.be/C3PWG_y5oDg?t=658) of this game on Youtube, which has a pretty lengthy segment on the soundtrack. The focus is obviously on Alien Sex Fiend, but there is also a short interview with Barry Leitch.

Lethal Weapon (MS-DOS [MT-32], 1992, Ocean) - Another Ocean soundtrack, this one was composed by Barry Leitch and Dean Evans. The music is the same as in the Amiga version, not sure which one was the original though.

F29 Retaliator (MS-DOS [MT-32], 1990, Ocean) - Flight simulator with music by Matthew Cannon and Jason Brooke. The Ocean guys certainly knew how to get the best out of the MT-32.

The Dome (X68000, 1988, System Sacom) - One of the early System Sacom soundtracks for the X68000.

Tokyo Twilight Busters (PC-9801 [SC-88], 1995, Wolfteam) - Nice GS arrangements by the Wolteam guys.

And a handful of updated C64 soundtracks: Ocean Loader, Roland's Ratrace, ShadowFire, The Way of the Exploding Fist

Mission Impossibubble (C64, 1989, Hewson) - Music by Neil Baldwin, the melancholic Name Entry tune is pretty good.

Shadow Skimmer (C64, 1987, The Edge) - Also by Neil Baldwin, one of his earlier soundtracks.
Title Theme (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UnbsHv1UANQ)

Street Cred Boxing (C64, 1989, Players Premier) - Two funky tunes by Johannes Bjerregaard.

Orbits (C64, 1994, CP Verlag) - Puzzle game with a space theme and atmospheric music by Wojciech Radziejewski (Shogoon)
Mercury (https://youtu.be/_ztuMNc81DY?t=107)

Spell Bound (Amiga, 1990, Psyclapse) - Pretty bad platformer, mostly known for the rockin' title track by Ray Norrish.
Title Screen (https://youtu.be/Ir7mAMqf2SA?t=44)

Gainforce (Amiga, 1993, CompuTec) - Defender-like budget shmup.

Crystal Palace (Amiga, 1993, CompuTec) - Platformer with cheerful music by an unknown composer.
Title Screen (https://youtu.be/6sfeVGgIsfA?t=6)

Miami Chase (Amiga, 1990, Codemasters) - 80s synth music by Jimmy Fredriksson (Firefox) and Allister Brimble

Episode #006: Game Music History ~1985~

1985 was arguably one of the most important years for video game music. Most major arcade developers made the switch from PSG to FM, composers like Rob Hubbard and Martin Galway began to unlock the full potential of the SID, and soundtracks in general became more complex and varied in style and structure.

The playlist is in roughly chronological order, although there is some guesswork involved as exact release dates are unknown for many of these games.

I thought we had moved past this already. When I was doing the tags for this episode, I found this gem on the SMB Wikipedia page. I mean, who comes up with such nonsense?

Kondo is objectively important in the history of video game music, given that he was the first person, circa 1984, to write actual music for a video game, in the 1985 game Super Mario Bros.

I know, but still, I never liked Kondo's compositions. Never mind. It seems like the whole entire world and the Net is basically forcing me to honor Kondo and Mamma Mia Mario. God, I'm practically the only one on the planet that cannot stand Mario and Koji Kondo. Maybe it is for the best if I never show my face here ever again.

Nobody's forcing you to honor anything. You have a right to your opinion. Unfortunately, it's an unpopular opinion. So, you can do one of two things: understand that other people have different tastes than you and be respectful of that, while enjoying the company of those that respect your tastes... or you can keep running away from those that disagree. But I can tell you right now, if you choose option 2, it's going to get pretty lonely.

I think how important Koji Kondo (or anybody else really) was for the development of video game music is probably an interesting debate to be had. But that's different from telling everyone how wrong they are about something they like. Hating on popular things is such a waste of time in my opinion, why not channel that energy into something positive and talk about the music/composers you like? Some of the PC-98 requests you made in the past were really good and that's something I would definitely want to hear more about.

I noticed that in Wings of Death - Title tune, the two versions (amiga & ST) are exactly the same. Is there a mistake in the file of the Atari ST (it should not sound this way).

You can notice the difference in this video at 1:19 : https://youtu.be/yXokFFlROfM?t=1m17s

Is this the results of the difference between Atari ST & Atari STe ?

No, that's some Jochen Hippel magic :) He had a sound driver that could play multi-channel PCM tracks on the AY chip. However, this did require a lot of CPU time so it didn't see much use outside of a few intro or ending tunes.

Edit:
I think I misread your question, and you were asking about the differences in the song. I'll check this tomorrow, maybe there are multiple versions of this track.

So I had another look at this, there is only one version of this game for each system but I found at least 3 different variations of the title theme. Most likely this is due to inaccuracies of the various music rips floating around the net. Anyway, to be on the safe side, I recorded new title themes straight from the Atari and Amiga versions of the game. They will be uploaded with the next update.

Two Telenet soundtracks for the Sharp X1, both sound a little bit better than the original PC-88 versions:

Final Zone (Sharp X1, 1986, Telenet)

Valis: The Fantasm Soldier (Sharp X1, 1986, Telenet)

And a few updated soundtracks: Wings of Death (Amiga), Wings of Death (Atari ST), Ark Pandora (C64), Comic Bakery (C64), Hypa-Ball (C64), Rambo First Blood Part II (C64), Street Surfer (C64), West Bank (C64)

Happy Easter!

Hey there... how many more new soundtracks can you put out before the end of this month?!

Hi there, took West Bank C64 from here, sounds good. One question: Is Bank Panic (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bank_Panic) rippable?

It was so long ago I played the game, maybe even 20-24 years ago, but I think Bank Panic had a bit more "real" music than West Bank. And YT playthroughs are giving me confidence I`m right.

Not making this into an immediate request, saw the note in first post. Just to know if it`s possible.

Surprise: requests are open again until Sunday, up to 3 for any system in the OP!

SeeNa (PC-8801, 1986, System Soft) - Very impressive 3D game, for a 1986 PC-88 release the music is pretty good as well.
Function Area (https://youtu.be/cZKx6vbvy84?t=38)

Daiva Story I: Flame of Vlitra (PC-8801, 1986, T&E Soft) - Action/strategy hybrid by T&E Soft.
Flame of Vlitra (https://youtu.be/Ouyafbu3eX4?t=117)

The Baby of Can Guru (C64, 1987, Rainbow Arts) - One of the early Chris Huelsbeck soundtracks.
Intro (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0CNak8vfbQ)

Bank Panic (Arcade, 1984, Sega) - Not a whole lot of music except for the SN764xx rendition of Dixie that seems to play throughout the entire game.

Well, that is a surprise :D.

The words in bold had to be googled and Youtubed.

I know I played the game on C64, forgot to mention that earlier. I guess sound is of better quality on SEGA than on C64, correct?

Is C64 rippable? Yeah, we`re talking nostalgia here.

In your opinion, does Bank Panic sound better than West Bank? Professional opinion.

Yes, I think West Bank sounds better :) As far as I know, there is no official port of Bank Panic for the C64, but I bet there are a ton of unofficial ones similar to West Bank. Do you know anything else about that game you played, like year or publisher?

And in my (un)professional opinion the SN764xx is probably the most limited PSG, whereas the SID is arguably the best chip of that era. That assessment is based purely on hardware specs though, people did pretty awesome stuff (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t2N7VLF0ZQo) on the SN as well.

- Demon's World (Arcade - Toaplan action shmup where you're some Ghostbuster-esque guy (with shades and a 'stache) fighting monsters.)
- Dream Soccer '94 (Arcade - A Data East soccer game, licensed by Irem)
- F-1 Grand Prix Star (Arcade - Yet another F-1 game, this time by Jaleco)

Yes, I think West Bank sounds better :)

I agree, after a couple of listens, it is definitely getting more appealing to me. So no Bank Panic needed.

Ah, no chance of that, aside from Wikipedia article, I don`t have any other information (I was around 5-8 years old at the time I played the game, you see). Even finding the name of the game was troubling, because for some reason I couldn`t remember what building was game centered around (I thought it was a saloon, go figure) AND, only a couple of days ago I actually remembered that I played it on C64 , not on DOS.

Googlers worst nightmare: don`t know what I`m looking for, and information I`m basing my searches on is wrong. :D

One side question: Am I wrong, or are tracks for West bank with (SID stereo) in name, a bit, kinda, totally the same like rest of the tracks, or are there veeeery subtle differences?

My C64 soundtracks usually include two sets of files: a mono version recorded from real hardware and an emulated version (labeled SID Stereo) that has a slight stereo effect. There are cases where they are almost indistinguishable from each other.

Today's update is all about Amiga games with vocal themes by Richard Joseph:

Sensible World of Soccer (Amiga, 1994, Renegade) - You're a goalscoring superstar hero, you let your hair down and play to the fans. And every goal goal goal, says you're the best in the land.
Goalscoring Superstar Hero (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7h7x_9oR9cg)

Sensible Golf (Amiga, 1995, Virgin Interactive) - Do you wanna play golf? Here is a video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1aSd-VhItxM) of Jon Hare performing the theme live

Cannon Fodder 2 (Amiga, 1994, Virgin Interactive) - More of an expansion pack than an actual sequel.
Killer (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQrCS_juhUs)

Demon's World (Arcade, 1990, Taito) - Action platformer with auto-scrolling levels by Toaplan.

I wasn't able to do Dream Soccer '94 and Air Trix, but feel free to request something else instead.

Well, thanks for the heads up, nx666. I've come up with new ones for you...

- Deer Hunting USA (Arcade - The music has a bit of outdoors country flair, even though they have the "Allumer Sound Loop" thing. However, Sammy used Seta's X1-010 Sound Chip for this game. Here's a video of the music: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wSUZOlLsbwA)
- F-1 Dream (Arcade - Capcom's only (I think) F-1 game they made for the arcade market.)

Two requests:

F-1 Dream (Arcade, 1988, Capcom) - Music by Manami Matsumae and Takashi Tateishi

F1 Grand Prix Star (Arcade, 1991, Jaleco) - Just a handful of fairly unremarkable tunes.

One more request:

Deer Hunting USA (Arcade, 2000, Sammy USA) - Short loops of noisy guitar samples.

Episode #008: Masahiro Kajihara

A little tribute to Masahiro Kajihara, one of the most prolific composers on FM-based sound hardware. He is probably best known for his work on the Princess Maker series, but he also played an integral part in the creation of the Japanese computer music scene of the '90s as his PMD sound drivers were widely used for game soundtracks and demo music.

You can watch the video on Youtube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Budm-OpAfpU) or download the mp3 version here (https://mega.nz/#!HAJBTDzJ!mxFpFu-fVdjHw6bT9zklLs_kqaKNC4B9wPqtIMMAj14).

Tracklist

01 "Title" - Virgin Dream (1994, PC-9801) by Masahiro Kajihara

03 "H Scene" - Innocent Tour (1996, PC-9801) by Masahiro Kajihara
04 "High School 2" - Rouge: Manatsu no Kuchibeni (1990, PC-8801) by Masahiro Kajihara
05 "P5" - Pias (1991, PC-8801) by Masahiro Kajihara
06 "Battle Scene B" - Possessioner (1994, PC-9801) by Masahiro Kajihara

08 "Dog Man & Rat Man" - Meikyuu Gakuensai: Kyuukousha no Nazo (1994, PC-9801) by Masahiro Kajihara

19 "Confusion" - Silent Mbius (1991, X68000) by Masahiro Kajihara

There are also 4 completely new Kajiahara soundtracks that you can download from the OP:

Pias (PC-8801 [OPN,OPNA], 1991, Birdy Soft) - A short but sweet soundtrack that is somewhat reminiscent of the Hole Chaser music.

Mahabharata (PC-9801 [OPN], 1993, AIL) - Pretty interesting blend of Indian and Middle-Eastern influences.

Wonder Parallel Wars (PC-9801 [OPN], 1993, Mink) - Strategy game similar to Archon

Gods: Kami to Naru Otoko no Densetsu (PC-9801 [OPN, MT-32], 1992, PCM Complete) - A nice oddity. The music seems to be based on the SNES/Mega Drive versions, but it also has the Nation XII intro track from the original Amiga release. As a result you get to hear Masahiro Kajihara's take on music by Richard Joseph, David Whittaker, and Jason Page all in one soundtrack.

Also, Princess Maker (PC-9801) has been replaced with a better rip, Kagake Kira Kira Senshi Risky Jewel (PC-9801) and Innocent Tour (PC-9801) have updated composer information.

Any system would be good, with any games in the following classic Sierra series:
Space Quest
King's Quest

I don't know the specific titles that have music sadly so I am requesting this as a general request.

The titles for King's Quest are:
King's Quest I: Quest for the Crown
King's Quest II: Romancing the Throne
King's Quest III: To Heir Is Human
King's Quest IV: The Perils of Rosella
King's Quest V: Absence Makes the Heart Go Yonder!
King's Quest VI: Heir Today, Gone Tomorrow
King's Quest VII: The Princeless Bride
King's Quest VIII: Mask of Eternity

The titles for Space Quest are:
Space Quest: The Sarien Encounter
Space Quest II: Vohaul's Revenge
Space Quest III: The Pirates of Pestulon
Space Quest IV: Roger Wilco and the Time Rippers
Space Quest V: Roger Wilco The Next Mutation
Space Quest 6: Roger Wilco in The Spinal Frontier

I haven't had much time this week to work on new stuff, but at least I managed to finish a few of these half-done Amiga soundtracks that had been lying around for a while.

Cloud Kingdoms (Amiga, 1990, Millenium) - Music by David Whittaker
Title Screen (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RjRWLF8JSus)

Dogs of War (Amiga, 1989, Elite) - Commando clone, also scored by David Whittaker
Main Theme (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VzjVlm3RaxY)

Fly Harder (Amiga, 1993, Starbyte) - Gravity shooter with a nice intro tune.
Intro (https://youtu.be/jcCmJkprHbk?t=16)

Speedball 2: Brutal Deluxe (Amiga, 1990, Image Works) - The title track is yet another Nation XII song, converted to the Amiga by Richard Joseph
Brutal DeLuxe (https://youtu.be/rJZ_H7e_3xM?t=15)

Speedball 2: Brutal Deluxe (MS-DOS [MT-32], 1991, Image Works) - The MT-32 version by an unknown composer. There is a second (probably unused) track called 'baz speed', maybe this was done by Barry Leitch?
Brutal DeLuxe (https://youtu.be/WjUrYfWZOOg?t=15)

After Burner (Amiga, 1988, Activision) - Conversion of the arcade soundtrack by David Lowe. This was one of two different After Burner ports for the Amiga, developed by Argonaut Software.

Aaaanyway, Ultima 1 and 2 didn't have soundtracks, at least not the original computer releases. There is an Ultima 1-2-3 collection for FM Towns with music, but I'm not sure if that is actually used in-game and not just some menu tune. You can get the original Apple II soundtracks for Ultima 3,4,5 here (http://www.applevault.com/ultima/), and the C64 music for Ultima 3 from this site (http://www.vgmpf.com/Wiki/index.php?title=Ultima_III:_Exodus_(C64)).

A few more soundtracks for the fans of Chris Hlsbeck and Ryu Umemoto:

The Carl Lewis Challenge (Amiga, 1992, Psygnosis) - Weird track and field simulation with an awesome title track by Chris Hlsbeck.
Title Screen (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JA8A0LX6Qfo)

Hexuma: Das Auge Des Kal (Amiga, 1992, Software 2000) - German text adventure, and yet another Hlsbeck soundtrack.

Denny (Amiga, 1992, Software 2000) - An unreleased game, probably some kind of platformer. This was also scored by Chris Hlsbeck.

Dengeki Division (PC-9801, 1993, Apple Pie) - Strategy RPG by Apple Pie. The music was composed by Ryu Umemoto.
De Vision (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=34IsZ6ZwTz4), Phenomenal Energy (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QPESi82Kwj8)

Dennou Garou (PC-9801, 1993, Apple Pie) - More Ryu Umemoto

Yume no Sei (PC-9801 [OPNA], 1996, 13cm) - A collection of 3 different games with pretty good music.
Negative Feedback (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JO03rLHuz0Q), Feelin' Good (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZjQceKhsERY)

How about some DOS to Amiga ports?

Ski or Die (Amiga, 1991, Electronic Arts) - Four rockin' tunes by Rob Hubbard
Opening Title (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yWWkidYII6w)

UFO: Enemy Unknown / X-COM: UFO Defense (Amiga, 1994, MicroProse) - Conversion of the DOS soundtrack by Matt '4-mat' Simmonds

... and three soundtracks by Wally Beben:

Dark Side (Amiga, 1989, Micro Status) and Total Eclipse (Amiga, 1989, Micro Status) - Both are loosely based on Beben's music for the C64 games.
Dark Side (https://youtu.be/JEkPm37AAec?t=45), Total Eclipse (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SlRA2bBIp-w)

Pool of Radiance (Amiga, 1990, SSI) - A late port, also probably the best version of this game. The music is completely new as well, with a really nice intro track.
Intro (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h53jEGLDHEI)

... and one X68000 'game'

Kenkou: Sono Shi (X68000, 1992, Zoom) - This is the menu music from a Zoom disk magazine, composed by Hideyuki Shimono and Naoyuki Kimura. There is also a small game included, which is where the other track is from.

Some stuff from this week:

U.S.S. John Young (Amiga, 1990, Magic Bytes) - Submarine sim with music by Jesper Kyd. I think this was actually his first ever game soundtrack as well.
Title Screen (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dgKNr29i8iQ)

Dragon Wars (Amiga, 1990, Interplay) - For all intents and purposes this is Bard's Tale IV, developed by Interplay after they had lost the license to EA. The music was composed by Charles Deenen, and is one of the few orchestral soundtracks on the Amiga.
In-Game BGM (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=34r8WgorPjM)

Lord of the Rings: Volume One (Amiga, 1991, Electronic Arts) - This was composed by Deenen as well and features similar music.
Intro (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NSckkRI6S0U)

Suzaku (PC-9801 [OPN], 1992, Wolfteam) - Composed by Motoi Sakuraba and Ryota Furuya
Opening (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0ZC20Dwjb0), The Sorceress' Mansion (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cw3yfmsCtSo), Confrontation (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h7N7rWJKkJg)

Melt Down (PC-9801, 1989, Group R204) - Doujin shmup with music by Daisuke Takahashi (KID)

Melty Lancer (PC-9801, 1995, Imagineer) - Some sort of space RPG/sim, the soundtrack is also by Daisuke Takahashi.
Main Theme (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BT4UymxKZvo), Final Battle (vs. Ravenne) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7pLFbg4WqNI)

Goice (PC-9801 [SPB], 1994, Tenshindo) - Hentai adventure game composed by Takahiro Yonemura aka CHEMOOL. This is the SpeakBoard version of the soundtrack, which sounds slightly better than the regular OPNA music.
Outer Envoi (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4FD2vzKAa-c), Black Wish (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yf2pejkct5k)

Lightforce (C64, 1986, FTL) - Shmup with Rob Hubbard music
Main Theme (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nUCOuDx_aBg)

Speedball 2: Brutal Deluxe (C64, 1991, Image Works) - Conversion of the Amiga music by Martin Walker

Time Machine (C64, 1990, Activision) - From what I remember this was a pretty interesting, but flawed, adventure game (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HvyvrsUfbq8) with time travel mechanics. Another conversion by Martin Walker, the original Amiga music was composed by Wally Beben.
Title Screen (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8pjOCk4SbA)

Retrograde (C64, 1989, Thalamus) - Interesting mix of shmup and platformer by the Apex guys.
Loading Theme (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b68n5FZ1ASg)

Well, quite frankly, I don't know what to think about that. I just don't like the popular things because they get all of the accolades. They get all of the pop culture references in cartoons, movies, television, merchandise and comics. No one ever gave my favorite games or companies a chance to succeed because they didn't want them to succeed or they didn't have the money or technology to stay in business like the famous companies. All of the other companies like Capcom and Nintendo all had the talented staff and demanded perfection, while the smaller companies wanted to do whatever they wanted. I just... I just wanted the companies and games that I love from Japan to be honored, that's all, nx666. As for music, most of the games I try to find on Tokugawa are RPGs only for the PC-98 that aren't pornographic in nature. Sometimes, even the pornographic games have good music as well, but I just don't like looking at bare breasts or panty shots or nudity on the Tokugawa website. In fact, I have a ton more PC-98 RPGs I would like to request later on, when you are not too busy after the suspension. I have 3 I would like to request right now, but there are 5 games in this series. And I do not know how well the music is since I never heard it- it is called Another Genesis.

I thought we had moved past this already. When I was doing the tags for this episode, I found this gem on the SMB Wikipedia page. I mean, who comes up with such nonsense?

That I don't know. Probably rabid Mario fans want everyone to honor him. I don't have anything against Kondo. After all he DID do Star Fox 64, and Zelda, which are few of my favorite games even though they ARE popular.

Well, you came to the right place! This thread is all about honoring obscure video game companies and their soundtracks, including Japanese ones of course. I don't think you can force someone to honor something that they most likely have never heard of. All you can really do is to show them all the great things they might have missed out on. Thanks to ruiner's last podcast a few more people have heard of Kajihara (and by extension Gainax) and seemed to like the track he played. Maybe some of them will now go out and try to find more of his music (and hopefully my podcast about him, ha ha). I think that is really the only way to bring people to like the things you like. And if that doesn't work, well, then that's not the end of the world either.

As for requests: I'm not sure how to proceed with this to be honest. I had previously been working from home and could easily edit a few tracks whenever I felt like taking a break. But that isn't the case right now, so this has been really hit and miss for me lately. If I just open the thread for requests again, they would pile up pretty quickly without me having a chance to work on them. Suggestions are, of course, always welcome. Even better if they come with a little 'sales pitch' :)

I've never listened to the PC-98 and X68000 versions of the Dios soundtrack, no idea if these versions are straight ports or if they were upgraded in any way. I'll probably be able to fit in the other 2 games at some point, they both have only about 10 tracks that can be recorded with Hoot, so that's not a whole lot of work.

Some new stuff for fans of DOS and PC-98 music:

Shadow Warrior (MS-DOS [CD Audio, SC-88], 1997, GT Interactive) - Typical 90s FPS soundtrack with Japanese influences by Lee Jackson. Included are the CD tracks from the main release as well as the MIDI tracks from the demo version.
Intro (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KCi11eItNUY)

Azrael's Tear (MS-DOS [PCM, SC-88], 1996, Mindscape) - Atmospheric first-person adventure with music that manages to be creepy and beautiful at the same time. This was composed by Kerry Minnear and Ray Shulman, members of the 70s prog-rock band Gentle Giant. All the in-game music is MIDI recorded with an SC-88, the rest is streamed PCM from the movie files.
Peaceful (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GI1GQeFhIU), Cathedral (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=asIE1HHpiA0), In-Game 1 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sPQweid-Syw) (these samples are recorded with an SC-55mkII)

Mahou no Tenshi Creamy Mami: Futari no Rondo (PC-9801, 1994, Wishbone) - Based on the Creamy Mami anime, the music is by Ryu Umemoto and Yoshiaki Furuta. Furuta is one of the composers on the original movie soundtrack, so this might be Umemoto adaptations of his music, but I'm not sure.
Introduction (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOtcQDwCkLY), Mode Demonstration (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=waiQDJfX_QQ)

Mime (PC-9801 [SC-88], 1995, Studio Twinkle) - You can get the FM version of this soundtrack from ruiner's thread, but this here is even better in my opinion. Fantastic MIDI arrangements by Hiroaki Sano and Takahiro Nogi, recorded with an SC-88.

I don't think there is a complete database of PC-98/X68000 titles on the (non-Japanese) Internet, your best bet are probably sites like Mobygames or this (http://www.pc98.org/main.html), but they are missing a lot of games as well.

I also want to find Legend of Shalice, Legends of Lune, Last Guardian 1 and 2, Panzer Division 2 games, Kings Dungeon, Estoria, EDGE, Aggregate, Appareden, Crazy Labyrynth, Elm Knight, and Gal.Act.Heroism, and High School War all for the PC-98.

But yeah, look up the games made by D.O. for Hoot- you might like the soundtracks.

10 "Just Another Day" - The Lost Vikings (1992, SNES) by Charles Deenen
11 "Title Screen" - Rubicon (1992, Amiga) by Charles Deenen
12 "Title Screen" - B.A.T. (1991, Commodore 64) by Charles Deenen
13 "Intro" - Mysterious Worlds (1990, Amiga) by Charles Deenen
14 "Main Theme" - After the War (1989, Commodore 64) by Charles Deenen
15 "The Shire" - J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings: Volume One (1994, SNES) by Charles Deenen
16 "High Score" - Zamzara (1988, Commodore 64) by Charles Deenen

Sounds like he did a great job with the Lord of the Rings soundtrack for the SNES as well as the Area B theme from M.C. Kids, with the good use of arpeggios. I just don't know why the UK wanted to severely beat Japan in terms of game music. Is there a certain reason, nx666? My guess is probably they had a lot more training on more sophisticated sound hardware and computers, like the Amiga and Commodore 64.

Wait, I'm not done yet! Here are two short soundtracks by Zain/Sein/Xain Soft, I could not find any composer information on these two though:

Reinforcer (X68000, 1990, Zainsoft) - Overhead shooter with a cyberpunk theme.

Ground Master (X68000, 1988, Zainsoft) - Some sort of RPG I guess.

I've also uploaded the PC-98 and FM Towns versions of the Elm Knight soundtrack. I think this is a rip of the OST (http://vgmdb.net/album/6105), but I'm not 100% sure. The music itself is by Tadahiro Nitta and Yasufumi Fukuda and very similar to their Illusion City score.

There are some really nice relaxing tracks in that podcast. Should be perfect for a vacation :)

I'm not sure what you mean by "why the UK wanted to severely beat Japan in terms of game music", but the European (demo) music scene at that time was extremely competitive in itself. As a result things like sound drivers and editors, sample techniques, and general sound design developed at a rapid pace. In terms of music hardware the Amiga is very similar to the SNES so that was probably a fairly smooth transition for most people. Most European composers also had plenty of experience with PSG-based systems like the C64, Atari ST, Spectrum, or Amstrad which are somewhat similar to the NES and Master System. On the other hand there was no popular system with FM-based hardware which kinda shows in the 'quality' of many Western-developed Mega Drive / Adlib soundtracks. Charles Deenen is Dutch, btw.

I see, so basically, they never worked with FM very much, only PSG. I like FM better. But some PSG soundtracks are good, if not great. Some Western developed Megadrive soundtracks do have great soundtracks, since they have their own sound driver and have done extra work to make it sound good, like NOVOTRADE's sound drivers used in Ecco, Ecco 2, Exo Squad, Cyborg Soldier, as well as EA's sound drivers used in Road Rash and Road Rash 2. However, I DO NOT like the GEMS sound driver on the Genesis, mainly because it uses less work to make games on the Genesis sound good, by converting MIDIs and WAVs to FM, However, it is good for beginners though.

Agreed, GEMS has produced some of the worst FM music on the Mega Drive/ Genesis. And furthering the whole FM vs. PSG conversation, western composers had huge success with the NES because they'd already mastered the technology on the C64 and ZX Spectrum. There are a few FM standouts in the west, namely Matt Furniss, because of Shaun Hollingworth's intuitive sound driver. Even talented composers like David Wise tended to fall flat when using the YM2612.

I agree, I love Furniss's and Shawn Hollingworth's work on the Genesis, especially with T2: The Arcade Game- you might like the PC version of that soundtrack even more: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_0rO2KGPuA

I also think Allister Brimble/Teque London did a great job too, especially on The Lawnmower Man on the Genesis: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-UpdJ70Icg&index=6&list=PL4q-hWshJQ79H1VG2QMIq3hzwcHOApt59

The official soundtrack to Elm Knight is half and half- Half FM-TOWNS and half-PC-98. I am strictly looking for the PC-98 version from Hoot. So yes, you gotten the rip from the official OST, which I've got as well, but I like the FM grittiness that Tadahiro Nitta and Yasufumi Fukuda are known for when they once worked at Micro Cabin.

Yeah, as far as I understand it, Japanese computers in the 80's had used FM Synthesis regularly for years, so when the Mega Drive came along it was an easier adjustment for them to make. Unsurprisingly, a lot of Japanese composers who made high quality soundtracks for the Mega Drive had previously worked on music for the PC-88, PC-98 and Sharp X68000 or arcade games that used FM sound chips. It took a lot longer for FM sound chips to become readily available in the United States and Europe, so composers weren't as familiar with the style when the Mega Drive/Genesis rolled around.

So that's why. Well, we could've had the same chips they used for the PC98, PC88 and X68000, but instead, we gotten one that still had a OK-ish FM output, but cheap to produce, like the YM3812 for example. SNK used that chip in their arcade games from 1987-1989, and then America, Europe and Korea started using it on their DOS games in the early '90s.

Well, PSG and PCM on the Amiga. At some point (1990 iirc) the first trackers started to pop up on DOS PCs, and there were actually quite a number of DOS games that used tracked music for their soundtracks as well.

The list of standout FM composers from the US and Europe is pretty short imo. For me that would be Furniss, Huelsbeck, Follin (on Mega Drive), Hubbard, Picq (on DOS), Midway/Williams also had some pretty talented guys (Forden, Schmidt, Granner etc) for their arcade/pinball games. I'm probably forgetting somebody, but that's about it. There was also a small Adlib tracking scene in the 90s that produced a handful of pretty awesome game soundtracks.

Although Adlib sound cards (and later SB) had been around since '87, most US developers jumped onto the MT-32 bandwagon which was released around the same time. The DOS soundtracks of that era were usually composed for the higher end MIDI devices, and then converted for Adlib using fairly generic FM sound fonts. Ironically, most consumers had an Adlib or SB card, so what most people today remember as the typical DOS sound are these awful FM renditions of MIDI soundtracks.

In Japan pretty much every computer had FM sound, at least as an option, from around 1985 onward. And this was also the year when most arcade developers made the switch to FM-based sound hardware as well.

In hindsight I'm actually pretty ok with this: we got all these awesome FM soundtracks from Japan, a ton of fantastic SID music from Europe, all the crazy stuff from the demo scene on Amiga and DOS, arcade music on cutting edge (and sometimes fairly esoteric) sound hardware etc. I would not want to have it any other way.

Most of the Soundblaster models actually had an OPL3 chip, but there are barely any games that make use of it. Those sound cards would have been fairly capable devices if they had been utilized correctly. In the mid-90s I had an SB16+SCB-55 (daughterboard version of the SC-55) which was basically OPL3 + 16bit Stereo DAC + plenty of CPU grunt for software mixing + 28 channel MIDI.

Heck, Yuzo Koshiro STILL uses the "Music Love" software he wrote for the PC-88 to create music for contemporary games! Japan has a particular love affair for FM, and the west for PSG and trackers, and I'm totally OK with that. :)

I'm all for FM- I'm not into the bleepy-bloopy PSG very much, mainly because it sounds too simple compared to the grit that FM synthesizers have. I just wish the West had a lot more appreciation for FM in terms of game music and composition instead of PSG, that's all. Then, I wouldn't be so judgemental towards game developers who are not from Japan because they would've composed music on FM chips, like Yuzo Koshiro still does currently using his PC88. So yeah, now you all pretty much know why I am not too fond of Western game developers very much. Granted, their music is great, but I feel that their games should've been on the Japanese computers as well, that way the Western composers, including Furniss, Hollingworth, Brimble and others as well as Jake Kaufman would gain a knowledge of FM and honor FM a lot more and use it in in their games. Good thing nowadays we are starting to realize this when people make their own custom compositions on trackers, because there are some patches/VSTs that can emulate FM hardware and chips for trackers.

Some new stuff for the weekend:

Shadows of Cairn (MS-DOS, 1994, Masque Publishing) - Horrible attempt to create a Prince of Persia-style platformer with pretty hilarious voice acting. However, the music is totally awesome. At parts, this sounds like a Fields of the Nephilim album. Unfortunately they couldn't fit all the tracks in CD quality on the disc, so for a few songs I had to include the regular version which was stored in some kind of streamed ADPCM format.
Title Screen (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKWQgBuhExw)

Fantasy General (MS-DOS, 1996, Mindscape) - I played a lot of this game back in the day, which is basically Panzer General with a fantasy setting. The soundtrack consists of arrangements of various liturgical songs featuring soprano Marisa Lenhardt. Pretty unique in the world of video game music, and also probably the only time I heard my mom say something complimentary about a game soundtrack :)
Victory Chorus (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rlH5iOWh1HI)

Dragon Knight III / Knights of Xentar (X68000, 1992, Elf) - One of the few Japanese computer games that had a release in the west. Some great tracks by Manabu Kunieda and Hiroaki Sano.
Field 2 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vvn60s40Rgs), Boss Battle (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TP8GsHipb4E)

Animahjong V3 (PC-9801 [OPN], 1993, Sogna) - Some sort of strip mahjong, wrapped into a visual novel. The music is by Kenichi Arakawa.

Animahjong X (PC-9801 [OPNA], 1994, Sogna) - The sequel, also scored by Kenichi Arakawa.
Opening (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27mREIXA5wA), Staff Roll (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUvrapAcfrE)

Otome Senki (PC-9801 [OPNA], 1996, Alice Soft) - Wizardry-like RPG with a historical theme and the near obligatory nude scenes. Some nicely arranged tracks by Shade.
Insanity -The Name of Justice- (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xVplV_fYnEA), Karma (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i4Y0ZLLjf5I)

Flink (CD32, 1995, Psygnosis) - Platformer with great pixel-art by Henk Nieborg that was made by ex-Thalion developers. The music by Matthias Steinwachs is the same as in the original Sega CD release.
Story Sequence (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=blwRLrhyrfU), Stage Theme 1 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C4PfVjezjN4)

Top Gear 2 (CD32, 1994, Gremlin Graphics) - CD audio that is based on the original SNES version with two additional tracks. Patrick Phelan and Neil Biggin are the composers here.

These soundtracks were recorded with Munt and a Blue Ridge rom. I currently only have an LAPC-I, but that's stuck in an old (semi-broken) DOS PC, and to get it working with Hoot or any PC-98 emulator would be a major pain in the ass. Like you said, MT-32 emulation is pretty good these days.

Awesome!! I didn't know how many you specified request-wise, but I'm going to request just two, if it's alright with you.

- F1 Grand Prix Star 2 (Arcade; I didn't know there was a sequel to F1 Grand Prix Star until I was browsing on YouTube, lol. The music sounds much better than the original, instrumental-wise, IMO.)
- Last Striker (Arcade; developed by East Technology, known for Gigandes and Double Dragon III (published by Technos), and published by Taito. The sound driver used for this game sounds almost similar to the one used for Gigandes.)

Those are my requests to you, nx666. If any of those two aren't rippable, let me know and I'll come up with a replacement.

Last Striker (Arcade, 1989, East Technology)

F1 Grand Prix Star II (Arcade, 1993, Jaleco)

Photo Genic (PC-9801 [SC-88], 1997, Sunsoft)

Screamer Rally (MS-DOS [CD Audio], 1997, Virgin Interactive)

How about a few more Tim Follin soundtracks?

Body Slam (C64, 1988, Firebird) - The title track is an original Follin piece, the rest of the soundtrack is very loosely based on Sega's arcade game.
Title Screen (https://youtu.be/TAzCAlmGDA8?t=11)

Sky Shark / Flying Shark (C64, 1988, Taito) - There are two ports of Flying Shark for the C64, this is the later US version. The music covers Tatsuya Uemura's arcade music, and there are two original Follin tracks as well.
Title Screen "Forgive Your All" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bbod0GrFPhs)

Magic Johnson's Basketball (C64, 1989, Virgin Mastertronic) - Pretty crappy basketball game from what I remember. This was also ported to the NES at some point, although that version has a different soundtrack.
Title Screen (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-TfCSxYKP0)

Scumball (C64, 1988, Mastertronic) - Exploration/platform game, ported from the Spectrum.
In-Game BGM (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9YX_mW_lc5U)

Yami no Ketsuzoku (X68000, 1990, System Sacom) - Adventure game with music by Manabu Saito.
Opening (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N23TXXE91ds), Farewell to Rin (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wyugu8zi67Q)

FX Fighter Turbo (Windows, 1996, Windows) - 3D fighting game developed by Argonaut. Electronic dance music by Justin Scharvona.

Thanks for your efforts, nx666. If you need any more requests, I think you might can rip all Tatsumi arcades predating Cycle Warriors.

If three, go with these:

TX-1 (This debut work of theirs was the first multi-screen panoramic arcade. There are even different routes in it.)
Buggy Boy (Perhaps Tatsumi's peak at arcade popularity.)
Lock-On (Tatsumi's most advanced arcade game?)

But if I had to pick one, try Lock-On.

WEEKEND UPDATE TIME!!!

Batman Forever (MS-DOS, 1996, Acclaim) - This is basically a CD audio version of the SNES/Genesis soundtrack. The original compositions were by the Follin Bros, but I don't know if they did the arrangements for the DOS port as well.

Future Dimensions (MS-DOS, 1995, Lifetimes) - A shmup created by the demo group Crew242 with some pretty good tracker music by Mathias Ruch (Silent Mode)

FX Fighter (MS-DOS, 1995, GTE Interactive) - The original game in this 'series', like the sequel this was composed by Justin Scharvona. Most of the themes featured here were later rearranged for the Turbo soundtrack.

Touhou Fuumaroku ~ The Story of Eastern Wonderland (PC-9801 [OPNA], 1997, Amusement Makers) - This is the OPNA music, you can get the OPN version of the soundtrack as well as Touhou Kaikidan from ruiner's thread.

Touhou Yumejikuu ~ Phantasmagoria of Dim.Dream (PC-9801 [OPNA], 1997, Amusement Makers) - Part 3 in this series, all of these games were scored by Junya Ota

Touhou Gensoukyou ~ Lotus Land Story (PC-9801 [OPNA], 1988, Amusement Makers)

Turbo Charge (C64, 1991, System 3) - Outrun with guns. Notable for the 5-channel title track.

Super Shooting Towns (FM Towns, 1991, Amorphous) - Shmup that came with a level editor. The music is pretty unconventional, you'd never think this was composed for a shooter.

Mad Stalker: Full Metal Force (FM Towns, 1994, Family Soft) - CD audio version of the original X68000 soundtrack

You can get Black Bird from the OP, which is very good. I think Star Trap has a few tracks that were composed by him. The one I'm definitely going to post at some point is Mahou Shoujo Fancy Coco, can't say no to a Umemoto/Watanabe collaboration. I don't know much else about him, to be honest, other than the fact that he is sometimes credited as NAVA.

Some new stuff, including a few of the suggestions:

Don't Call Me Amy! / Amy to Yobanaide / Amy's Fantasies (PC-9821 [OPNA], 1995, C's Ware) - The original OPN soundtrack for this game was composed by Kazuhiro Kanae. The music here is from the later PC-9821 release featuring OPNA arrangements by Ryu Umemoto.

Ragnar0kkr (PC-9801 [SC-88], 1994, Glodia) - Pretty good orchestral MIDI arrangements by Ikki Nakamura

Jetstrike (CD32, 1994, Rasputin) - A 2D sidescroller similar to Wings of Fury. However, the real stars of the show are the vocal tracks with hilarious lyrics about flying planes and dropping bombs.
Fast Jet Fever (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ioHgLIGqi-Q)

Buggy Boy (Arcade, 1985, Tatsumi) - Just a few short jingles, most of them I could tag from memory having played a ton of the C64 version as a kid.

Lock-On: Tatsumi Air Force (Arcade, 1986, Tatsumi)

And a few updated C64 soundtracks: Agent X II: The Mad Prof's Back, Armageddon Man, Cataball, Commando, The Great Giana Sisters, Hysteria, The Last Ninja, Pi.R Squared, Zig Zag: Go For Gold

Yes, requests are still suspended, I simply don't have the time to support them on an ongoing basis right now. My own backlog has also grown pretty big, so if I find a spare minute then it is usually spent on that.

Maybe anybody else wants to learn how to do these rips? Stuff like Hoot is hardly rocket science and just requires some time and patience. I would gladly assist anybody who needs help with this and I could also share some of the scripts I use that automate a significant chunk of the process.

Ah, I see. Toyo Kusanagi and his compositions at Family Soft were great. I would like to try ripping music off of Hoot, but it seems too complicated, since you have to log each track using .WAV one by one, then convert all the tracks to MP3.
