Let's start with these two, if I have time I'll post a few more next week.

Wow, that was fast! Thank you very much! I'll be keeping an eye on the thread. Really appreciate your hard work. :)

Pixelated Audio just did a show on Quadrant for the C64 and the music is incredible. Think you can fit a rip of that in when you have a moment?

That's another soundtrack that SOASC doesn't have at the moment. Seeing all these requests, I think I'm just going to upload the emulated versions for now, and add the original recordings whenever they are available.

Here are some of the C64 suggestions. The majority of them are emulated SID only though.

Barbarian II: The Dungeon of Drax (C64, 1988, Palace Software) - Like the prequel this was scored by Richard Joseph

Quadrant (C64, 1993, CP Verlag) - Puzzle game with a pretty good Thomas Detert soundtrack

Transformers (C64, 1985, Ocean) - The 'other' Transformers game on the C64. There is only one track, a short rendition of the Transformers theme by Fred Gray

Metal Gear (C64, 1990, Konami) - I think this is based on the NES version of the game. Music by Kris Hatelid

Nemesis (C64, 1986, Konami) - The European version of Gradius featuring two tracks from the arcade soundtrack.

Gradius (C64, 1987, Konami) - The North American release playing the PAL music at NTSC speed...

Total Recall (C64, 1990, Ocean) - Pretty crappy licensed game with awesome music by Jonathan Dunn

AudioPanicRoom - Episode #027: Chiptunes

The term 'chiptune' was originally coined for a sub-genre of Amiga music that incorporated instruments similar to those found in the music of 8-bit computers like the C64. Popular with the demo scene, this particular style was also frequently used in game soundtracks from that era. In this podcast we look back at almost 30 years of chiptune making, from the early beginnings with SIDMon and Protracker to more recent efforts by the tracking scene.

AudioPanicRoom - Episode #028: IDES

IDES was the parent company of labels like Cocktail Soft, Fairytale, or Red Zone and one of the most prolific publishers of visual novels during the 1990s. With musicians like Akira Sato, Yuki Nakayama, Ryu Takami, or BAKI they also had a fairly impressive line-up of composers that created a huge library of awesome FM soundtracks on Japanese computers from that era.

Alright right. I knew it had something to do with developers.

Here are my 2 requests:

Star Cruiser (Sharp X1; FM and PSG ver.)
ThunderForce (Sharp MZ)

If Sharp MZ cannot be ripped, then try this:

Mission 660 (Woodplace, Arcade)

My later requests will be other Woodplace arcade games.

Well, I don't know what to pick from. After all, I am not really into the hentai games as you know. But if I had to pick 2, it would have to be "Final Battle" - Romance wa Tsurugi no Kagayaki", and "Opening" - Kurutta Kajitsu" Dang it, I was close.

Here is one request (I couldn't do the other ones) and a few soundtracks that I had lying around unfinished for a bit.

Star Cruiser (Sharp X1 [OPM,PSG], 1988, Arsys Software)

King's Bounty (PC-9801 [86], 1994, StarCraft) - The precursor to the Heroes of Might & Magic series. The PC-98 port did receive a completely new soundtrack by Takeshi Abo.

The Settlers II: Veni, Vidi, Vici (MS-DOS [CD Audio, SC-88], 1996, Blue Byte) - Included are the CD audio tracks and the extended MIDI soundtrack. The CD tracks actually sound like they were recorded from a Sound Canvas as well.

Nouten Densetsu / Legend of Noten (X68000, 1993, Iron Gear) - Doujin game with music by Takahiro Yonemura (CHEMOOL)

Some of these games are not hentai. Maybe go to vndb and do a search for anything without sexual content. They have pretty good filters that you can use for that purpose.

Some of these games are not hentai. Maybe go to vndb and do a search for anything without sexual content. They have pretty good filters that you can use for that purpose.

Ah. I will keep that in mind. Do you have the link to vndb?

If you have the time, I'd like to repeat two of my previous C64 requests:

Castlevania (Kris Hatlelid)
Yie Ar Kung Fu 2 (Martin Galway)

I'm pretty sure these are complete at SOASC.

I'd also like to add this one I forgot previously that has some awesome music courtesy of Barry Leitch by way of The Sisters of Mercy (!) and John Carpenter (!!!):

Marauder (Barry Leitch)

I might be a able to do another round of C64 soundtracks on the weekend. The SOASC version of Castlevania is based on an older SID file that was missing a few tracks, e.g. the ending theme. I could do the emulated version though if you want it.

Like you, I much prefer the original, unemulated SID sound, but I guess this would be the second best option until we can get the full original version. So, yes please! :)

I just thought of another one (for the C64)! Garfield by Neil Baldwin. I'm sorry for putting forward so many requests, but this one is really catchy, and I think there's only one longer track (and two fanfares) in the game anyway. I hope I'm not asking too much and that this won't be the request that broke the camel's back. :) ;)

Managed to find some time for this today:

Castlevania (C64, 1990, Konami) - Converted from the NES by Kris Hatlelid. Not a huge fan of this version of the soundtrack to be honest.

Yie Ar Kung Fu II (C64, 1996, Imagine) - Port of the MSX game by Martin Galway. This is best known for the title theme he wrote for this version.

Marauder (C64, 1988, Hewson) - An early Barry Leitch soundtrack.

Garfield: Big, Fat, Hairy Deal (C64, 1987, The Edge) - Composed by Neil Baldwin

Garfield: Big, Fat, Hairy Deal (Amiga, 1988, The Edge) - While we are at it, the same composition arranged for the Amiga by David Whittaker

Garfield: Winter's Tail (Amiga, 1989, The Edge) - Some sort of sequel to the first game. This probably has the best soundtrack of the bunch and was composed by Dave Lowe.

Many thanks! Haven't heard the Amiga versions, will check them out as well.

OK, so some of those weren't the absolutely best SID music around. Let me make it up to you with a couple more requests, I promise you'll like these!

Sword of Honour (both C64 and Amiga versions are good)
The Chambers of Shaolin (again, both C64 and Amiga versions are good, especially the former)

Also consider doing Mayhem in Monsterland (C64) sometime. Its a classic from the end of the computer's lifespan that many remember for how far it pushed it's limits.

I'm not sure if it's possible or not, but can you do Fire Pro Wrestling Wonderswan for the Bandai WonderSwan? I'm curious about it since I saw video of the game on YouTube, and was curious to listen to the whole soundtrack. If it's untagged, then I can do some retagging of the tracks.

Just ignore what I said about the music. Nobody needs to justify requests here. If it's important to you then that's all the reason I need (provided I have time, of course).

Btw, you can already get the Amiga version of Chambers of Shaolin from the OP.

I would like to focus on computer and arcade music for now, posting handheld music would just open the floodgates - everybody else would want similar concessions :)

I'm no expert (and not really up-to-date) on Wonderswan sound emulation, but you can get the music file here (http://www.zophar.net/music/wsr.html), which can be played in Winamp with this plugin (http://www.zophar.net/utilities/wsr/wsr-plugin-for-winamp.html). From there you can simply convert the soundtrack to WAV, MP3, or FLAC. And if you run into problems, you can always ask here.

Yes, although one might easily get the impression they are not :)

OK. But it's extra cool if it's music you enjoy too. It can't be much fun doing soundtracks you don't like. But thanks for doing this, I have found so much cool stuff in this thread (this thread and ruiner9's console-thread alone justify FF Shrine's existance). :)

Oh cool, I missed it. I prefer the C64 version, but this one rocks as well.

Since you're doing C64 now, I have one last request that should be pretty easy: Qix. It only has one longer track, and it's Tim Follin.... OK, I'll shut up now. :)

Well, I am thankful that you provided the links, and I understand and respect your decision to stick with consoles and computer game soundtracks, but for me, there is one slight problem that I have: I'm not very good at doing such a thing as ripping music from files. The last time I tried doing that, the results were... mediocre at best. Oh well, I can ask someone else for the FPW WonderSwan soundtrack.

Switching topics, I saw that you're currently doing some Amiga and C64 requests, and I got three Amiga ones for ya!

- Operation Stealth (AKA, James Bond 007: The Stealth Affair)
- Rise of the Robots
- Robocop

Well, if you want, I could walk you through the basic process for this. I guarantee you will end up with a decent rip even without doing any mastering.

If I had to do the rip, the process would be mostly the same. The things I do in addition to the initial conversion have nothing to do with sound improvement and are mostly related to adding consistent pre/post-gaps and volume leveling. But none of that will make the music sound 'better'.

Some new stuff, mostly requests:

Might and Magic VII: For Blood and Honor (Windows, 1999, The 3DO Company) - Like most of the M&M releases of that era this was scored by Paul Romero and Robert King and features excellent orchestral music.

Sword of Honour (Amiga, 1992, Prestige) - Mix of fighting game and action adventure. The Amiga music is by Mattias Fridh.

Sword of Honour (C64, 1994, CP Verlag) - The C64 port with a completely different soundtrack by John Carehag (Ziphoid)

Robocop (Amiga, 1989, Ocean) - Can the Amiga sound like a ZX Spectrum? "Hell yeah!", said the composer of this game.

Rise Of The Robots (Amiga, 1994, Mirage) - Crappy fighting game. The most notable thing about the soundtrack is the menu music composed by Queen guitarist Brian May.

Operation Stealth (Amiga, 1990, Delphine) - Adventure game composed by Jean Baudlot.

Qix (C64, 1989, Taito) - Mostly a collection of short jingles by Tim Follin in this Taito arcade port.

Chambers of Shaolin (C64, 1989, Thalion) - A cut down port of the Amiga original. Only one of the tracks is based on the original Hippel soundtrack though, the rest are new compositions by Holger Knipping and Michael Hendriks.

Break Street (C64, 1984, Creative Software) - A breakdancing game with hip hop music. By 1984 standards this is pretty impressive.

Battle Command (Amiga, 1990, Ocean) - The little-known sequel to Carrier Command. There is only one track: a pretty awesome menu theme by Jonathan Dunn.

Also thanks to KingTengu for requesting the Amiga-version of Rise of the Robots. I had no idea this game was on Amiga. Like mentioned, the game was horrible, but I liked the other versions of the soundtrack and am curious how it sounds on the Amiga. Break Street (C64) sounds interesting as well.

You need the audio plugin I mentioned above to play Wonderswan music, regular music players/converters are not able to play these files.

Here is a quick rundown of what needs to be done. I'm using XMPlay in my example, but this should work with any other player that can use Winamp plugins (including Winamp itself of course):

1. Download (http://support.xmplay.com/files_view.php?file_id=670) and install XMPlay
2. Download (http://www.zophar.net/utilities/wsr/wsr-plugin-for-winamp.html) the Wonderswan music plugin. Inside this archive you'll find a file called in_wsr.dll.
3. Copy in_wsr.dll to the folder where you just installed XMPlay (the same folder should have the xmplay.exe file).
4. Start XMPlay and drag/drop all the m3u files to the playlist window. You should be able to listen to the music now.

You can then use XMPlay to convert the music to WAV or FLAC by changing its output settings. Let me know if you have trouble with that.

AudioPanicRoom - Episode #029: Stphane Picq

The style of French composer Stphane Picq is one of the most unique within the world of video game music. Drawing from a wide range of influences, his soundtracks mix elements like ethnic rhythms, electronic and acoustic instruments, dysphonic vocals, industrial, techno, or trance, often even in the same track. The result is a strangely hypnotic sound that is hard to classify to any particular genre.

New stuff:

Full Metal Planete (Amiga, 1989, Infogrames) - This game has just a menu theme, a nice track by Stphane Picq that even made it onto the last podcast.

Full Metal Planete (MS-DOS, 1990, Infogrames)

Arcus Odyssey (X68000 [MT-32], 1991, Wolfteam) - I merged this with the already existing FM version of the soundtrack. One track (Act 7) sounds a bit weird, but I'm afraid there is nothing I can do about that.

Nebulus / Castelian / Tower Toppler (C64, 1987, Hewson)

Nebulus (Amiga, 1988, Hewson)

Devious Designs (Amiga, 1991, Image Works) - Ingenious mix of puzzle game and action platformer. The music is also pretty cool and was composed by Martin Walker.

Motorhead (Windows, 1998, Gremlin Interactive) - A techno soundtrack by Olaf Gustafsson. I also included the music from the PSX release which has a few tracks that are different.

I've just replaced the track with a recording from XM6 which doesn't seem to have these issues. No idea why this isn't working in Hoot though.

Awesome, even the CD tracks! :D I'm in your debt.

I don't know how time-consuming ripping these Amiga/CD32 combo-soundtracks are, but if you're up for another one, could you do Sleepwalker for the Amiga and CD32? Especially the CD version has some spectacular work by Barry Lietch (as well as a couple other guys I've never heard of).

Provided that a) I don't have to extract the sound files myself and b) I can find tags, Amiga rips are fairly straightforward to make. But especially the tags are almost always a problem.

Sleepwalker (Amiga, 1993, Ocean) - Comes with the audio tracks of the CD32 release.

I'd like to request three DOS rips

SimCity (the original version)
SimCity 2000
SimCity Classic

I don't think the original DOS version of Sim City had any music. Here is the SC 2000 soundtrack, not my rip though:

SimCity 2000 (MS-DOS [OPL2,MT-32,GM], 1993, Maxis)

And two other soundtracks I forgot to upload last time around:

CarVup (Atari ST, 1990, Core Design) - Composed by Matt Furniss, I played a track from this on the last podcast.

Ace 2088 (ZX Spectrum, 1988, Cascade Games) - Pretty nice title theme by Sean Conran

If you need easy requests, try these:

Radar Scope (Arcade, Nintendo)
Donkey Kong (Arcade, Nintendo)
Puck-Man/Pac-Man (Arcade, Namco)

These are pretty darn notable, but I will use them for educational purposes and comparison to some other games released at that time or others by their same developers.

Raid Wind (PC-98) - Predecessor of Alltynex series.

Captain America and the Avengers (Arcade) - I think you might make a better rip of this than others.

The Ninja Warriors (Amiga, 1989, Virgin Mastertronic)

Double Dragon (Amiga, 1989, Melbourne House)

Final Fight (Amiga, 1991, U.S. Gold)

Golden Axe (Amiga, 1990, Virgin Mastertronic)

Theatre of Death (Amiga, 1993, Psygnosis)

Amiga arcade ports, part 2:

Mortal Kombat (Amiga, 1993, Virgin Interactive) - As far as I can tell this is an original soundtrack by Allister Brimble and not based on the arcade music.

Mortal Kombat II (Amiga, 1994, Acclaim) - The sequel, composed by Anthony Putson

Altered Beast (Amiga, 1989, Activision) - Converted for the Amiga by Dave Lowe

Street Fighter II: The World Warrior (Amiga, 1992, U.S.Gold) - This was also arranged by Dave Lowe. Like most aspects of this port the music is a bit iffy with the majority of the arcade tracks missing.

Chase H.Q. (Amiga, 1989, Ocean) - Amiga port of Taito's arcade music by Matt Furniss

Pit-Fighter (Amiga, 1991, Domark) - Another Matt Furniss soundtrack, this one is not based on the arcade original.

Tiger Road (Amiga, 1989, Go!) - Only one pretty awesome track

Atomic Robo-Kid (Amiga, 1990, Activision) - Pretty faithful to the arcade version for the most part with a few original tracks by Martin Walker.

AudioPanicRoom - Episode #031: Ultima

Ultima is not only one of the most influential series in gaming history, the basic structure of its soundtracks with overworld, town, dungeon, and battle themes has also been the template that many RPGs since have followed. This podcast includes a selection of tracks from the entire series: from Ken Arnold's minimalist compositions for the Apple II, the more elaborate arrangements for MIDI synths, to the orchestral scores of the modern era.

It was raining all day so here is some new stuff:

Earthsiege 2 (Windows, 1996, Sierra On-Line) - I played a ton of Earthsiege back in the day but never this sequel. Included are the CD audio tracks, which (I think) is the only music in the game.

Days of Thunder (MS-DOS [OPL2, MT-32], 1990, Mindscape) - By David Whittaker. There are only 3 tracks so I included the Adlib and MT-32 versions of the soundtrack.

Flimbo's Quest (Amiga, 1990, System 3) - Port of Bjerregaard's C64 tunes by Charles Deenen

Elf (Amiga, 1991, Ocean) - A soundtrack composed by Matthew Cannon that is much better than the game itself.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day (Amiga, 1991, Ocean) - Another Ocean movie license, this one was scored by Dean Evans

Qwak (Amiga, 1993, Team 17) - Single screen platformer with some nice tunes by Bjrn Lynne.

Assassin (Amiga, 1992, Team 17) - A game inspired by Strider with music by Allister Brimble. There is a minor track missing which is a short drum loop that was probably created as a sound effect.

Mercs (Amiga, 1991, U.S. Gold) - Loosely based on Manami Matsumae's arcade soundtrack

Ninja Rabbits (Amiga, 1991, MicroValue) - Beat'em up with music by Philip Nixon

Mercury: The Prime Master (X68000, 1991, Maxima) - Isometric RPG

Area 88: Etranger 1995 (PC-9801 [OPN], 1995, Familysoft) - Strategy game based on the Area 88 manga. The music was composed by Familysoft mainstay Toyo Kusanagi

Kasei-Jin (PC-8801, 1988, Pack-In-Video) - I came across this thing when I was looking at PC-88 music software. The title roughly translates to 'Singers' and it is essentially a simple sequencer that has support for synthesized vocals. The result is rather interesting to say the least. (https://youtu.be/keAnQx2XkGc?t=228) I included the 3 demo songs that came with the program disk and am now left wondering what else people have composed with this application.

That's not surprising. It was a limited edition game- Maxima only made 3000 copies of the game for the PC-98. Thanks for Mercury the Prime Master and Area 88 Etranger 1995. Typhoon Thompson in Search for the Sea Child (Amiga, 1990, Broderbund) - One of my favorite Amiga games. There isn't much music other than the title track and a lot of jingles though.

Joe Blade 2 (Amiga, 1988, Players) - Early SoundTracker music by Mike Brown

Last Ninja 2: Back With A Vengeance (Amiga, 1990, System 3) - Conversion of the C64 music by Mike Clarke. Not nearly as good as the original imo.

RoboCop 3 (Amiga, 1992, Ocean) - The Amiga version of this movie license is a pretty interesting 3D game made by DID with music by demo sceners Mantronix and Oistein Eide

Cool Spot (Amiga, 1993, Virgin Interactive) - Tommy Tallarico's console soundtrack adapted for the Amiga by Andrew Barnabas

Desert Strike: Return To The Gulf (Amiga, 1993, Electronic Arts) - Another console-to-Amiga port. This time with an original soundtrack by Jason Whitely

Body Blows (Amiga, 1993, Team 17) - Fighting game with music by (mostly) Danny Burke. Thanks to ijustwantthestuff for providing the tags!

The Corporation (C64, 1988, Activision) - This was originally composed by Adam Gilmore but is perhaps better known for all the cracktros that re-purposed the theme.

Dead or Alive (C64, 1987, Alternative Software) - Two pretty nice tracks by Mark Cooksey

Chase HQ II: Special Criminal Investigation (C64, 1990, Ocean) - One of the few game soundtracks Klaus Grngaard (Link) did on the C64.

Jochen Hippel Amiga Demos

I just uploaded a collection of demo music Jochen Hippel composed for the Amiga. This includes original compositions, arrangements, and early/alternate versions of his game soundtracks. Since he was using his own custom sound drivers on the Amiga, his music has become fairly inaccessible in its original format and isn't even properly handled by many dedicated Amiga players. For this reason I compiled it all into one big archive that can be found in the Demos section on the first page of this thread.

Crusher Joe: Kanraku Wakusei no Inbou (PC-9801, 1994, Family Soft)

Dark Wraith (PC-9801, 1989, Artec)

ATR: All Terrain Racing (Amiga, 1995, Team 17)

Joe Blade (Amiga, 1988, Players)

Beavers (Amiga, 1993, Grandslam)

Vigilante (Amiga, 1989, U.S.Gold)

Road Rash (Amiga, 1992, Electronic Arts)

Aquaventura (Amiga, 1992, Psygnosis)

Troddlers (Amiga, 1992, Storm)

Dragon Ninja (Amiga, 1989, Imagine)

Prajator: Image Ranger (PC-8801 [OPNA], 1989, Enix)

Big Fight: Big Trouble in the Atlantic Ocean (Arcade, 1992, Tatsumi)

Street Fighter: The Movie (Arcade, 1995, Incredible Technologies) - I had to rip this via the sound driver so there might be some minor jingles missing. Also, if anybody wants to tag this, be my guest.

I wasn't able to do World Rally Fever (DOS), all the versions on the Internet seem to have the CD tracks removed. Alternatively, you could buy the game from GOG, which comes with the soundtrack.

AudioPanicRoom - Episode #032: Kunio-kun

Technos Japan's Kunio-kun series started in 1986 with Renegade, an arcade game that was one of the precursors to the beat'em up genre. From there the franchise developed into multiple spiritual sequels and spin-offs featuring the same cast of characters, including an entire sub-series of sports games. The typical sound of the Kunio-kun games was defined by series mainstay Kazuo Sawa and is heavily influenced by Western popular music of the 50s and 60s.

Technos Japan was founded by former Data East employees who initially worked on Data East's Pro Soccer arcade and the two laserdisc games Thunder Storm and Road Blaster. In fact, the car and copter appeared in the garages at the beginnings of Double Dragon 1 and 2.

Some of Technos Japan employees also left to form Almanic/Givro and Avit.

Karate Champ arcade and the Kunio-kun and Double Dragon arcades share some similar body movements.

One of my favorite games developed by Almanic/Givro was Cosmic Carnage/Cyber Brawl for the SEGA 32X.

Thanks SO much for Sokou Kihei Votoms: Real Battle! I love Family Soft's music, especially on their games based off of anime, like Gundam, Area 88 and Votoms and others. They were the only ones that had the brass to make games based off of popular anime on the PC-98, using a very talented composer that I wish that was still with us. Unfortunately, that is not the case, since Toyo Kusanagi passed away in 2011, and that his music is largely unknown by many.

And since I love Gundam (who doesn't?), I have found 3 games I would like from Family Soft for the PC-98 that are related to Gundam. There are tons more, but I don't know if Hoot has all of them.

1: Mobile Suit Gundam- Return of Zion (1993)
2: Mobile Suit Gundam- A Year of War (1993)
3: Gundam 0083: Stardust Operation (1996)

Here is a list of ALL of the games Family Soft Co., Ltd. has done: http://fullmotionvideo.free.fr/screen/Family%20Soft.html

I also have 2 arcade rips if you can get around to it eventually-

1: SD Gundam Sangokushi Rainbow Tairiku Senki- 1993 BANPRESTO- Final game developed by EIM, Ltd. (same company that Kenji Eno worked at)
2. Ultra Toukon Densetsu- 1993 BANPRESTO (Developed by KID?)

I can try to rip DD2 (with Hoot), but I'm still not sure how much this would actually improve on ruiner's rip. There is no obvious way to get the music from Air Attack and I haven't had the time to investigate further how this could be done either so that's on the back burner for now.

I'm going to deviate from my ongoing Amiga-spree for a while to request two X68 soundtracks that I can't find anywhere despite the games being regarded as classics:

R-Type (X68000)
Salamander (X68000)

Thanks, nx666. Anyway, can you rip other Japanese computer versions of R-Type as well? Like for these?

FM TOWNS
PC-98
MSX2

And do you have any suggestions on what repairman can take the advice of FM TOWNS user Caius on adding an ATX external PSU with its own power switch to bypass the internal one being stopped by the infamous IC51 chip? Thanks.

Simon the Sorcerer (Amiga, 1993, Adventure Soft) - Classic P&C adventure. The tags are based on the DOS version of the soundtrack.

Super C (Amiga, 1990, Konami) - Despite the name, this is actually a port of the arcade game Super Contra.

Tearaway Thomas (Amiga, 1992, Global Software) - One of the many Sonic-inspired games on the Amiga.

Mobile Suit Gundam: Return of Zion (PC-9801, 1993, Family Soft) - Strategy game set in the Gundam universe with music by Toyo Kusanagi and Ryu Umemoto.

Mobile Suit Gundam: A Year of War (PC-9801, 1993, Family Soft) - The sequel, scored by the same composers.

Salamander (X68000, 1988, Sharp) - Sounds pretty much like the arcade music, and there are a million unused tracks as well.

Double Dragon II: The Revenge (Arcade, 1988, Technos)

I don't think there are PC-98 and FM Towns ports of R-Type.

As for the FM Towns repair: Your best bet would be to call a local electronics repair shop and explain the situation to them. They most likely have never seen an FM Towns before, so you need to be prepared to give them fairly detailed instructions. I don't know what "advice of FM TOWNS user Caius" is referring to, but it sounds like you want to replace the FM Towns power supply with a modern ATX unit. In that case they would probably want to know the specs of the old one, especially regarding voltages and pinouts. I'm not really an expert on this subject, but I would fully expect that Fujitsu was using proprietary plugs so the repair shop would have to build some sort of adapter or re-solder the old plug.

If only that game had more tracks though since there were only 3- I feel that Ocean was probably the best company in terms of music for the Amiga, but who am I kidding? There are some other good composers on the Amiga that l like, like Chris Hulesbeck and Matt Furniss- Soccer Kid is my personal favorite by him by the way.

AudioPanicRoom - Episode #033: Danish Delights

Like elsewhere in Europe, the late 1980s saw the rise of the Danish demoscene, a vibrant (lol) environment that created some of the most well-known computer musicians of that era. This podcast features a collection of tracks from games and demos 'Made in Denmark' on various 8 and 16 bit systems.

As some sort of companion piece to this podcast I can highly recommend Computer Chronicles (http://chordian.net/2017/01/09/my-computer-chronicles-part-1/), a five-part series by Jens-Christian Huus (JCH), demo musician, and creator of some of the best sound drivers on C64 and PC. It's a pretty well-written, interesting read with lots of personal anecdotes, stories about his relationships and rivalries with other musicians, technical explanations, sample tracks, etc. that give a pretty good insight into the nature of the Danish demoscene. Most of the artists featured in the podcast make an appearance in this series as well.

And a little bonus for all the David Whittaker fans:

Tetris (Amiga, 1987, Mirrorsoft)

Quadralien (Amiga, 1988, Logotron)

Stormtrooper (Amiga, 1988, Creation)

Total Recall (Amiga, 1990, Ocean)

Days of Thunder (Amiga, 1990, Mindscape)

I won't have much time over the next few weeks to work on new stuff, especially longer rips will be somewhat difficult. I've also accumulated quite a backlog of soundtracks I want for myself so if I find a few minutes then this will have priority.

I looked into FM7 music before, but that system seems to be more trouble than it's worth. There is no music archive that one could tap into, so all the soundtracks would have to be extracted manually. Unlike some of the other systems, I know next to nothing about the FM7 and any effort in this direction would come with a pretty steep learning curve.

Great stuff! Some infectious funkiness on the Amiga side this time. I just can't get that Night Walk theme out of my head, and Space Assault was a nice surprise, haven't heard that one before.

nx: If its possible to do, could I request Kiki KaiKai for the MSX2? I've tried to find the sound files for this game on places like Hoot Archive, but have come up short. If you could do it that'd be cool (but no sweat if its not possible).

This is similar to the FM-7 request the other day in that I don't have a lot of experience with ripping sound files from MSX games and anything that doesn't already exist in a playable format would require a lot of time to create.

Crossed Swords is definitely doable but it might take a few weeks until I get a chance to work on this. I would really like to focus on doing a few soundtracks for myself right now. I'll keep it in my backlog though.

OK. From what I hear on YouTube its not that different from the arcade version anyway, so its no biggie/must-have by any means. :) Thanks anyway.

AudioPanicRoom - Episode #034: Manabu Saito

Manabu Saito was a musical prodigy, who started his career at System Sacom when he was just 18 years old. His music, often a blend of classical and jazz influences with a great sense of melody, were an important component of System Sacom's genre-defining Novel Ware games. During his time with the company he also composed the first Japanese soundtrack with MT-32 support, 38 Man Kilo no Kokuu, and was an early adopter of CD audio on the FM Towns. Sadly, he passed away from kidney failure in 1992 at the age of 22.

Thank you for this episode! I had no idea Saito was even dead (yes, I'm not well-informed)! And at only 22. My jaw dropped when I read that. :/ Gemini Wing and 38 Man Kilo no Kokuu have long been two of my favorite X68 soundtracks, I really like the style on them, relaxing and driving at the same time.

Speaking of System Sacom, I'd like to request Metal Sight (X68000). And also (not System Sacom, but awesome anyway) Lagoon (X68000), which is far superior to the SNES version IMO. I understand that you're busy at the moment so you can add them last in your backlog if you want to do them.

There used to be a website about him run by his brother that had a ton of information. It seems to be gone now, but you can still access an archived version via wayback machine (https://web.archive.org/web/20151231122851/http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~uu3s-situ/00/mokuzi.html).

I think that's maybe something you should ask ruiner about, for my own sanity it's better if we stick with computer soundtracks over here :)

However, going by this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XRbdVEp3smI) the music in the game was composed by LHS. You can find all(?) of his music here (http://amp.dascene.net/detail.php?detail=modules&view=9580) which should include the songs used for the soundtrack. The ending theme, for example, is a chiptune remix of '99 Luftballons' that can be found on that page (2nd from the top).

Speaking of Lagoon X68000: 1983parrothead (or anyone else reading this), you wouldn't happen to have this EGG Music album (http://vgmdb.net/album/8641), or know where I could find it? I like the older Lagoon album you have in the ZOOM Support Thread, but it only plays through most themes once. The themes in this game are so good, you kind of feel that the one-loop-only deal is a bit insufficient...

The video seems to use a surround effect during playback. I don't know if OpenMPT can do this, but many other MOD players have that as an option. For example, you could try this:

- Download XMPlay (http://support.xmplay.com/files_view.php?file_id=670)
- Under Options there is a tab for the MOD playback settings
- On this tab set Interpolation = off, Ramping = sensitive, Surround = mode1

That should make it sound similar to the video in your post.

To reciprocate I offer anyone who's interested the official digital release of Lagoon Original Soundtracks (https://mega.nz/#!ReYEBAhB!mmlBBa4jczjIco7ouBKVM60HegJeGlienM1jer_fISs) from EGG MUSIC. This is the album I mentioned above on this page, yes, I decided to get it myself, because its some damn fine X68000 music. Thanks, glad you liked it! And no, I'm not on Twitter. A couple of years ago I reduced my social media presence to a bare minimum and I think that was probably one of the better decisions in my life :)

I understand. I just would like to spread the good word about your podcast. Is that ok? If so, what would be your preferred site to link to?

Thanks, nx666. I found these, and according to the descriptions of each one, they come from the hoot archives:
【PC-98】Advanced V.G. 2: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLmOGAUlgMSCJCR8UN2uUal91GGp32BKET
Can you upload your recordings of it? Thanks. ^_^

That's probably from one of the Firecracker disks, good luck finding the PC-98 version of that though. There are also PC-88 images of this disk mag which might be a bit easier to find, but I'm not sure if the arrangements/track selections are the same.

I'm no expert, but I think the MIDI PAC used in these videos basically just forwards the song data written for one of the FM extensions (like MSX Music) to an external MIDI module. I doubt this is currently supported by any MSX emulator or music player, so having access to the actual hardware would be the only way to record this.

AudioPanicRoom - Episode #035: Codemasters

Codemasters were one of the UK's biggest publishers of budget games, and one of the few companies to still develop original 8-bit computer titles when most publishers had already abandoned that market in the early 90s. While most of their games originated on the ZX Spectrum, it was usually the C64 and Amiga ports that featured the most impressive soundtracks supplied by a stellar line-up of composers like Allister Brimble, David Whittaker, Steve Barret, or Matt Gray.

Codemasters was a good company- I knew them because of their Micro Machines games that they teamed up with Galoob Toys to make. I liked their NES and Genesis (Especially the Genesis version's) soundtracks of the first Micro Machines game.

I was actually going to mix all the in-game music from Linus Spacehead into one coherent track, but then I got sidetracked and wasn't able to finish it in time for the podcast.

Codemasters was a good company- I knew them because of their Micro Machines games that they teamed up with Galoob Toys to make. I liked their NES and Genesis (Especially the Genesis version's) soundtracks of the first Micro Machines game.

To be honest, I never really played most of their games. Some of the sports titles are ok, and stuff like the Dizzy series is pretty alright for a budget game, but they also produced a lot of crap during that time. Somewhere around 1992(?) they changed their business model and focused more on full price titles, at which point the quality of their output became a bit more consistent. I just spent 5 minutes thinking about what my favorite Codemasters game from that era is, and I couldn't come up with one. It's definitely not Super Robin Hood on the C64 though, f that game.

Yeah, a lot of the old European game companies of the 8- and 16-bit eras were like that: great music, but really shitty games. Ocean really comes to mind here as well. It seems like when it comes to action, shoot 'em-ups, platforming and genres that require a lot of attention to design-details, the Japanese were just miles ahead of the West until about the PlayStation era (although there were of course great Western games in other genres, like adventure and RPG's). I find it one of the curious quirks of exploring old Western computer music from the C64, Amiga and other platforms that there is usually a great discrepancy between the quality of the music and that of the gameplay. You hear some awesome chiptunes then go and check out the game and it's often just a pile of %/&3!%!!!1, even when compared to the standard of those days. I remember when I started exploring C64 music beyond the few games I remembered from my childhood, I heard Jeroen Tel's awesome title music for Alloyrun and imagined the game must be equally fantastic. Not so, it turned out to be one of the dullest and most uneventful shooters ever (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b8sUvwSR_ec). But these days I care a lot more about game music than I do about games, so it's all good, and Codemasters, Ocean, et al. did pump out a lot of great tunes. :)

I think the best Western games in these genres are the ones that tried to do their own thing rather than emulating Japanese designs. I'm thinking of games like Paradroid, Typhoon Thompson, Lemmings, Spindizzy, Zarch, Exile, Oids, Nebulus, Wizball, etc. It's funny how most of these are not really remembered for their music though, with the exception of Wizball and maaaybe Lemmings. There are some good Japanese-style games (like Turrican 2 or Lionheart), but like you said, for the most part this type of game was better represented on consoles or in arcades.

Alloyrun is an (unpublished) game, made by 2 people in their bedroom, that was never good by anybody's standards. The closest Japanese equivalent would probably be some doujin game from a disk mag of the late 80s. Have you seen the games from the 100 Yen Disks that people like Yuzo Koshiro or Shinji Hosoe composed music for? I can guarantee you won't have much fun with those either :)

You're probably right, my bias is showing a bit. I've had much more time and opportunity to explore the Western budget games of yore than their more obscure Japanese equivalents, so there are probably worlds of pain, frustration, and shitty/lacking game design that I'm completely unaware of on the Japanese side of things. Like I alluded to I'm not that interested in the games anymore and only explore the world of Japanese retro computer games through their music (which is often a very rewarding experience).

I still think that outside the realm of adventure/RPGs, the Japanese were better at designing excellent and original games than us Westerners in the late 80s and early 90s. Maybe that opinion is more valid if we leave the "bedroom coder" level and compare bigger corporations - I can count dozens of games from that era by Sega, Konami, Capcom, Taito and others that I still find excellent today, while for example Ocean just seemed to spit out the same half-assed, badly controlled generic platformer over and over again, only with a new movie-license every time (of course there were exceptions here as well, I really liked Platoon for the C64 and NES, and Jurassic Park for the SNES). I hated most of those Ocean games back in the day, but I loved their music, so playing them was a weird, ambivalent experience. How to rate a game like Eek! The Cat (the revamped SNES version of Amiga's Sleepwalker), which had such lousy gameplay but such an awesome soundtrack? If I can say anything positive about Ocean, its that they made more crappy games that I still remember fondly after so many years than any other company, and that is entirely thanks to the music.

Anyway, just my two cents, and when it comes to the music (which is what we're here for after all), the European composers can easily hold their own in any comparison with their Japanese counterparts. We're lucky to have both these worlds to explore, and who made the better games doesn't matter that much in retrospect. :)

I agree with you there. I may not like European or other Non Japanese game developers due to their game design, but some of their games have such great music. But, unfortuately, I am biased in terms of who develops and designs games, and I say Japan does the better job. As for the music, it mostly depends on the composer, whether the music is good in my eyes, and in terms of a licensed game, isn't too fun or childish, for example, Plok for the SNES. Some tracks are good, coming from Geoff and Tim Follin, but most of them are just too cheesy, for example, in terms of my favorites from that game, Akrillic, Beach, Plok's House, and the Boss theme are NOT cheesy at all since they are tolerable in my eyes.

I still think that outside the realm of adventure/RPGs, the Japanese were better at designing excellent and original games than us Westerners in the late 80s and early 90s.

I sometimes think people have simply forgotten what awesome games we had on computers back then. Sure, there was a lot of garbage as well, but nobody forces you to play Alloyrun when you could spend some quality time with Dungeon Master instead. To give you an idea of what I'm talking about, here are some game designs from that era that I think are on par or better than what came out of Japan in their respective genres: Populous, Civilization, Sim City, Elite, Pirates!, Tetris, Lemmings, Starflight, Sensible Soccer, Carrier Command, Sentinel, M.U.L.E., Command HQ, X-Com, F16 Falcon, Links, Incredible Machine, F1 Grand Prix, Alter Ego, Tower of Babel, Railroad Tycoon, Sundog, Paradroid, Wing Commander, Settlers, etc.

None of this is an RPG or adventure game, but in my book all of these titles would qualify as 'excellent design' and many are pretty original (sometimes genre-defining) to boot. I definitely agree that Japanese game design was pretty far ahead in some areas (like platformers, side-scrolling action games, or shmups) but those genres only made up a part of the gaming market of that era.

To me, the Western equivalent to Nintendo, Sega, Konami, Capcom, Taito would be companies like Origin, Bullfrog, Lucasarts, Sierra, Maxis, Microprose, Interplay - I don't think Ocean was ever on the same level. Their business model was basically to spend all the money on licenses and almost nothing on development, and that clearly shows in the majority of their games. They are now mostly remembered for all the licensed crap they made, but people tend to forget that they also published some of the best arcade and console ports of that era (like Rainbow Islands, Parasol Stars, Toki, or Pang) and even had a few great original titles (Wizball, Wizkid, Push-Over, Batman, Head Over Heels, Robosport). The stuff DID made for them (Inferno, TFX, EF2000) was pretty state-of-the-art as well.

Argghhh, I give up! :) But yeah, I was always more of a console gamer, so I guess this accounts for my skewed perspective in preferring the Japanese-dominated genres.

I think this is why I've gotten the impression that the really high-quality Western games of the era were mainly in the strategy/adventure/Western RPG-fields, since I associate almost all of the companies you mention above (with the possible exception of Interplay) as focused on and specialized in those genres. I know that all of those Western companies produced excellent games, but it seems a bit apples-and-oranges to me to call them the equivalents of for example Sega, Konami, or Taito in any other regards than that they all produced high-quality games. It really seems like they focused on entirely different genres and design philosophies to be readily comparable. But I might be wrong. I don't however contest the fact that there were many awesome and groundbreaking Western games in all genres back then.

I agree though that Tetris beats all other games ever and is the definition of game-design brilliance. :P

That's what I meant. I made that comparison with regards to how they were all big budget developers that tried to push the medium forward in their respective markets (while making money of course). As opposed to a company like Ocean that seemed to lack that creative drive for the most part, or Codemasters, who were heavily invested in the UK budget market.

I might have to pass on that one. There is a S98 version of the soundtrack with 100 tracks that is probably pretty old and potentially not the best quality. And in Hoot there are over 200 tracks (including SFX), but the sets available all seem to be broken so I would probably have to create a new one as well. But in the end, no matter how this is done, this looks like a ton of work. I could give you the sound files if you want to try it yourself though.

There are a lot of games in the OP that have soundtrack options I haven't posted yet. Unless someone asks for a specific version, I usually just pick what sounds best to me. There are also some rare cases (like Cho-Jin) where the game supports some esoteric MIDI hardware that I don't have access to and that doesn't exist in emulated form anywhere either.

Noooo, was afraid you'd say that. :( Had a bad feeling when I posted the request which I hoped wouldn't be true, as the tracks I've listened to on YouTube sound awesome. It's really rare for 8-bit music from back then to sound so atmospheric, usually a broader sound is needed to instill that kind of feeling in the listener.

Well, I understand that it'll probably be a hell of a lot of work, so if you don't feel like it, I guess I'll have to get the files from Hoot and try myself (I've never used it before, but I'll try). Thanks anyway.

Thanks for Farland Story for the PC-98! There are 4 more games in that series that TGL have done on the PC-98 as well as 1 on Windows 95, as well as 2 RPGs for the PC98:

1: Appareden - Fukuryuu no Shou (1995)
2: Sword Dancer (1990)
and one more good one I definitely want from TGL, since it is their first and only action title- EDGE from 1993.
Appareden, and EDGE support OPN (original) SC-55 and MT-32.

An episode featuring music by Takahiro Yonemura aka Chemool. He was a founding member of the doujin circle 'Firecracker', and one of the main contributors to their series of musik disks released on PC88/98 throughout the 1990s. Very proficient with both FM and MIDI hardware, he also had a fairly lengthy career in the gaming industry, composing and arranging soundtracks for publishers like Tenshindo, Giga, or TGL.

Eh? This thread has been pretty quiet for some time, is everyone having a summer lull period? Let me be a bit rude and break the silence with some Commodore 64 requests. We've neglected the trusty old breadbin for some time now, after all. How about these, all of which I assure are excellent:

By the way, if anyone wants Necronomicon, a website called Salademais has it: http://raborak.com/saladedemais/

It's not the summer lull, I just didn't have a whole lot of time for new rips lately. I don't think that is going to change soon so what I can do at the moment is limited to soundtracks that don't require too much manual work. Unfortunately, that would be the case for the arcade and most of the C64 soundtracks requested above.

Anyway, here is what I have for today and with a little bit of luck there will be a new podcast tomorrow as well.

OK, I understand. I had some C64 requests lined up that are really good, but I'll drop them for the time being and stick to the rougher, unedited SOASC recordings. I can definitely understand the editing part being time-consuming and tedious, and just want to thank you for all the effort you've put in already to bring us all these goodies. In that spirit I'm now heading over to raid the MS-DOS / Windows section for new loot. :)

Seriously though, thanks for Necronomicon, and I'm looking forward to the next episode!

FYI, here are some examples of what I consider 'easy' to make:

- anything playable in Hoot (except external MIDI) with 20 or less tracks (provided I don't have to create the set myself)
- anything using a logged/timed format (like .vgm)
- really short C64 soundtracks (no more than 1 or 2 tracks)
- CD audio

I could also work on some more Amiga soundtracks. There are probably still a few left from your list that don't require a lot of work.

In that case, I guess I'd prefer the Amiga stuff to take precedence. The C64 stuff I can get from SOASC in any case (even though the format is a bit rough). With Amiga, I feel like it's a higher priority since there aren't many good repositories of Amiga mp3s like this thread around. Sorry for clogging your queue with C64 requests, you can drop them (or save them for when you feel you have enough time to work on them). :)

In that spirit I'm now heading over to raid the MS-DOS / Windows section for new loot. :)

Speaking of which, am I the only one being unable to download Atomino (MS-DOS) from the OP?

The Psychic Detective series from Data West also came out on Windows computers:
http://www.mobygames.com/game-group/psychic-detective-series

But there's got to be a way to get the music from ALL of the games.

Considering that many of these games are CD-based, you could probably pretty easily rip at least the audio tracks. Everything else might be considerably more difficult, but I think complete rips of the sound files from the two PCE games already exist. I don't know what audio format the Windows ports use though.

I see. I can't find the Windows versions anywhere, so I do not know what format they use for music. I thought they would be easier for you, since they are NOT like the original FM-TOWNS versions, but oh well. I don't know what to request anymore.

Heh, yeah, the arcade ports are of differing quality. I like the sound of Bubble Bobble, but Ninja Spirit and a few other could've been better. I really like Klax's title theme, though... It is the nineties, and there is time for Klax... K-Klax... :)

Still, it's interesting to hear these adaptions. Most people shun them, but I have a bit of a fascination with the generally shitty arcade ports that littered the C64 and Amiga libraries... Knowing they were usually put together by three or four guys from scratch trying to emulate/approximate the arcade experience on far inferior hardware makes me judge them a bit more leniently. Some however were just terrible, period, like OutRun Amiga. I find the music is often the saving grace with many of these ports.

Speaking of obscure old games and platforms, how about some Apple Pippin (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-h4t33tOG60)?

Keep up the good work, nx666! :)

True, they may be the saving grace on the ports, but they usually only have about 3-4 tracks. And not to mention that they are not very accurate to the arcade original.

And not to mention that they are not very accurate to the arcade original.

Many times when it comes to the music though, I prefer the home ports over the arcade originals. Especially the C64 ports, as I find the sound of the SID chip much more pleasant than most arcade audio of that time. Just my opinion, though.

That's fine, I like some arrangements that they do for the home ports. Sly Spy/Secret Agent for the C64 was a good one since, I like the compositions of the Follin Bros, as well as Matt Gray's composition of Last Ninja II. After all, I do like the Amiga's Paula and the SID chip used on the C64, since they are true synth chips. Any good ones you can recommend for the C64?

Some suggestions for C64 arcade conversions that are both pretty good and fairly complete in comparison with the arcade music: R-Type, Turbo Out-Run, Midnight Resistance.

Other good arcade-to-C64-conversion soundtracks are: Afterburner, Altered Beast, Bionic Commando, Bubble Bobble, Ghouls 'n Ghosts, Golden Axe, Green Beret, LED Storm/Mad Gear, Salamander, Sky Shark, Wonderboy in Monsterland.

I also really like Black Tiger, Dragon Ninja, Final Fight, Flying Shark, Ikari Warriors, Ninja Spirit, Shinobi, Street Fighter II, and The Ninja Warriors, however these are not available in nx666's collection yet.
