It would have not made any sense to get Philippe Colonna on it for a limited batch of cd as perhaps... but let's hear it then! :)

Thanks umberto,
For the technically minded, the normal link is not to be found hidden in the frame element of the video, as its BBC iPlayer, they already thought of that, so the only way I could get it it was using Sound Recorder and got a decent lossy copy.
Anything must be better that paying out over 200 UKP on eBay (which is where it's at the moment) :)

Hi, I've just checked the properties of the audio mp3 file and it confirms that this is a stereo file, and it certainly sounds stereo at my end, as for it being released on any download sites at all, there's been no mention if, or if at all it will be, only a previous post stating that they will wait for it to be released on download (might be a long wait, might not). If it is, it might upset the guy who's just paid 620 UKP for it :)

Hi again,
Sorry but this file is definitely in mono, i.e. there is no stereo content, the left and right channels are exactly the same. My ears told me this straight away and my phase scope/wave display confirms this. When file properties report a stereo file what it actually means is that it is a 2-channel file, that is different form a mono file which has just one channel. This file has 2-channels but each have the same audio so it is not in stereo. Our ears can be fooled by 2-channel mono files, especially if it is a good quality file and when using speakers, but if you listen carefully on headphones you will not hear anything coming specifically from one side or the other so it is mono.
With at least 1000 of the CDs in existence surely there must be someone out there with one who is also a Vangelis fan and can tell us if the original is in stereo? I cannot see why it would have been in mono, but mono makes sense for internet streams.
It looks like those of us who cannot afford hundreds of pounds for a CD will have to make do with this mono version until a kind soul is willing to share a rip of the CD.
If anyone can help, please contact me! Thanks.
Steve

The track is certainly mono, or atleast the recording shared here. Here's hoping someone who owns it will rip a high quality version. It's a wonderful piece, and I really enjoyed the speech by Hawkins on it.

This really makes me ache for a full new album :(

Just to say that Dennis from the Elsewhere site has confirmed that the original CD is in stereo and that he personally is doubtful about digital music site releases.

The Stephen Hawking Tribute: Seize the Moment

01. Hawking & Vangelis - Seize the Moment 6:15 [Original audio stream]

Original audio stream as broadcasted by BBC is at 96kbps. Forget any stereo blissfulness at those bitrates.
Restoring something back lead to the remastered audio stream.
This should suffice until a proper CD rip might surface someplace...

Enjoy!

Hiya
Needless to say its been on my eBay watch list and they went from 156 to 620 (one guy who had zero feeback so i was somewhat wary claimed he had 5 copies he was selling for a Childrens Hearts Charity) forgive me but I've got old and cynical now, but it could be true, even so by my reckoning he's still got 3!
I resigned myself to the very good release kindly issued here by dadadacicici and obviously as I'm not an audiophile and can't tell my 192's from my 320's I'm probably the last person in the queue to have one even if i had that sort of silly money (which i haven't) lol
I did find on Newsgroups from 2008 a MP3 copy of Vangelis / Robert Janson ‎– Świadectwo - Muzyka Filmowa (2008), but many years ago Yannis put it out in FLAC (can't get it now) and as it was my first post I had some initial teething troubles but fixed now.

But still looking for Stephen Hawking though :)

Good to hear that news Sirius. I have done exactly the same, so it looks like we will both get a CD for a reasonable price after all! Much better to give money to the charity that Vangelis donated his music to rather than greedy eBayers and the like, who probably got the CD for free and have no interest in Vangelis anyway. I still feel this could have been handled much better.

Why give out a free CD from such an important musician to an exclusive group of people without making it more widely available? It seems naive not to have thought of the inevitability of people making large sums through selling the CDs as collectors items. Why didn't they make the music available for download in return for a donation which would have meant more income for the charity? They could have asked for larger donations in return for better quality downloads. This would have kept the prices of any CDs down for those Vangelis collectors who absolutely had to have a physical copy. Also, why has the fact that they have spare CDs not been more publicised when just sitting on them doesn't get them any more money?

Im I coming across as a bit annoyed?! Actually I am relieved to know I will get a CD. It's just that it never seems easy to get hold of Vangelis music almost every time something new comes out, unless it is a mainstream international release.

Oh the joys of being a Vangelis collector!!

You're not coming across as annoyed, more fustrated like myself. They gould have made a load more money by doing this an easier way, BEFORE folk started to pocket 500UKP on it.
And these are folk who, if they ever heard of Vangelis, thought, 'oh he's the geezer that did Chariots of Fire' :(

Ok folks, finally at last, I've got the original CD of The Stephen Hawking Tribute by Vangelis (its a single track CD).
I used dBPoweramp and ripped the CD to Wave and then converted it to FLAC, there's been a conversation about the track title but I've left it as on CD (you can always edit that).
I'm told its good to go as a FLAC and its the best you're going to get so I hope you like it :)

ALAC is an available option but make sure its clearly stated on the request please (its actually came out slightly better, only slightly than FLAC on the tests).
The ALAC is taken from the WAVE CD Rip directly. its not a conversion from FLAC to ALAC.

I you'd like a link, then please SEND ME A PM FROM NOW ON This will cut down on number of pages in the thread being used up with one topic.

Obviously if you leave a request in the Thread I'll sort it :)

Many thanks to all those who've requested this and left kind comments, very much appreciated :)

Ok folks, finally at last, I've got the original CD from The Stephen Hawking Tribute by Vangelis (its a single track CD).

Reps and feedback welcome :)

ALAC is mainly for MAC users. FLAC tends to be the preferred option for everybody else.
They all are lossless compression algorithms. So WAV/AIFF, FLAC, ALAC and so on are all the same.
You can wear a suit or be in your pajamas... but that will always be you! :)

Thanks for the share! That's the spirit! ;)

Perhaps you could suggest another way for people to responsibly share without being bombarded by PMs? At least Sirius is sharing something, the first person for some time to bother taking the trouble, and anyway this thread has been extremely quiet until lately - last useful info was Dada's info re the Stephen Hawking CD and not much at all during the summer months. At least sharing gets people excited about Vangelis music again.

Do you mean starting a new thread for this?

It might not be a bad idea...

Perhaps on the long run it might help to keep all the "Stephen Hawking Tribute" request in one place.

Anyway it is only taking 4 pages so far.

Uploader's choice on that really.

Ok you lucky people...

Here are a few goodies for you. I am making these available as direct links so as to eliminate possible problems and complaints with PMs and long threads. However, no method is perfect so these will not be around forever. I am making just one format generally available and that is high quality VBR mp3.

Firstly, the Mary Katrantzou Spring Summer 2019 Runway Show medley, of which there are two different versions.

The first is the shorter video promo in stereo without the new piece, which contains in order Soil Festivities (Movement 1), Oceanic (Aquatic Dance), Antarctica (Deliverance) and Mask (Movement 1, Part 2). I have topped & tailed this and slightly enhanced it to replace missing frequencies from the compressed video track:

https://mega.nz/#!wFRVDCIC!PRb9QnLYi...PotenIjID47fM0

The second is the longer complete show from a video in mono (which contains Soil Festivities (Movement 1), Mask (Movement 1 Part 1), new piece, Oceanic (Aquatic Dance), Antarctica (Deliverance), and the encore is Albedo 0.39 (Alpha). I have topped & tailed this, slightly enhanced the frequencies and processed it into synthesised stereo:

https://mega.nz/#!1FAXAazb!GesEKyq5u...j2AaEWgrVNP1do

I have also edited out the new piece from this in case anyone just wants that on its own:

https://mega.nz/#!AUBnFKaA!wCE7-zWY8...eQvny74NSm2_jU

Finally, the complete soundtrack from "Salut, Jerusalem". Please note that this is not a copy of the bootleg CD. This is a new transfer I have done from the original mono soundtrack. I have not tried to cut it up into bits because (1) it is not a soundtrack of distinct sections, (2) I'm not sure anyone knows for sure which parts were actually performed by Vangelis, (3) there are no known official titles for the different parts, and (4) it was easier that way! I have again topped and tailed, enhanced and synthesised stereo:

https://mega.nz/#!9NRVSSiR!ryuexGxJE...xPf2jqCnJT8atQ

Oh and I should just mention, no reverb added! ;)

All the usual things much appreciated.

(Sorry for the lateness of the post. This took longer than expected.)

Here's a follow-up to the post I made earlier.

"Salut, Jerusalem", as a documentary film rather than a drama, has a complicated soundtrack made up of location recordings, narration, source music and original music. Although Vangelis is credited as composer, obviously not all the music in the film was written and/or performed by him. As there is little information about the details of the film's soundtrack available, it is difficult to pin down exactly what his contributions were. Easily recognisable as a Vangelis composition of this period is the main theme used various times throughout the film. Although there appear to be different versions of this I suspect there was actually only one (maybe two) versions actually recorded and the different parts were edited and mixed where required for the soundtrack. Apart from the main theme there are also occasional music pieces made up of combinations of percussion/pipe/guitar which sound much more improvisional and which Vangelis almost certainly played a part in at times. Exactly how much and where seems unknown. He certainly worked with other instrumentalists on his other soundtracks around this time. Given all this, the soundtrack, in terms of interest for fans of Vangelis music, is mainly about the main theme. I cannot imagine many people listening to the complete soundtrack very often!

I have already shared my take on the complete soundtrack below and resisted splitting it up for reasons already given, but having had some more time to study the soundtrack I can see that, while it may be of interest to completists, most fans will mainly be interested in the main theme music given that it is a really good example of Vangelis's sound of the early 1970s. So, I decided to spend some time taking out the pure parts of the main theme without any overlaid sound and arranged them to produce my best guess of what might have appeared as a track on a compilation album. I am not sure if this has been done before, and it was difficult to do given the fact that I didn't have the master tapes (dream on Steve!), but here it is:

https://mega.nz/#!4FpnRCKC!RIyiZVJLSIi9JRmXRUBHb4buPulA0qyvhVhr8pOP2yc

I started from scratch with the original mono soundtrack and once the parts were edited together I applied the same processing tools I used on the complete soundtrack to give the track a more modern technical quality, with some extra cleaning-up, levelling and sweetening.

I hope you like it!

Hardly my friend, Amazon is wrong, it appears that Amazon in different countries have different facts (no surprise there), except in the USA where they are sitting on the fence and not mentioning it at all.
Only Amazon in Germany has that info, but since the last post, it appears that Vangelis (yes the God himself) is keeping tight lipped about it, but the word on the street is Pre-orders from 07 Dec for possible release 23rd? Jan.
Possible a more Piano based release?
But who knows, could this be the definition of Fake News I wonder? :)

The female singer on the UK site is trying to piggy back off the possible kosher Vangelis release by using (nearly) the same name.

So we are all quoting from different Amazons, and to think that I thought Microsoft ruled the world, or is it Apple? :)

There actually are quite a few subtle keyboard flourishes here and there, mostly buried in the background. It's definitely not just piano. It's actually quite good, I'm really enjoying "Movement 9" from Mythodea in particular.

on the technical side, it's definitively not just a piano, what I'm hearing! ;)
and at least on discogs there's the mistake as to identify "Longing" as being the same track as heard on Blade Runner Trilogy, which it is not. or am I wrong? what do you think?
https://www.discogs.com/de/Vangelis-Nocturne/release/12958659
including "Longing" that would make 7 old tracks not 6, as they say all over the net (so somebody left out the Mythodea-track).
anyway, I like it - it fits the mood of nighttime (as it should, :) )

Unfortunately (for you) few years ago I stopped mad collecting and now keep only tracks that I listen.
First item in this list - cd reissue of "May 1968" - total piece of shit. Sound is horrible. LP-rip sounds much better. You can find both on rutracker.org
As for the rest, I don't know, maybe someone still keep them. Anyway it's not bootlegs.

Albums sounds terrific, even if it's a bit slow for my tastes. Hearing a few of the old tracks on piano though (1492) is godlike!

I'll pass on this. Just cannot sit through it from the first to the last track without zapping to different sections to make it shorter. Officially I am closing my box with the Rosetta album.
Hope to re-open the box soon though...

I know for now there are two versions of this CD:

I think the question should be more like 'does anyone have a lossless version for Athens 97?' The rest is more suited to the audiophiles that frequent these hallowed halls :)

Very nice. Thank you for sharing this. Any thoughts on how it compares to the myriad other versions?

This is actually a very comprehensive collection of music in excellent quality concentrating on all the music heard on the soundtrack of the various versions of Blade Runner. Its certainly worth having. Other compilations focus on just Vangelis music, others focus on atmospheric mixes (sometimes with dialogue) and others bring in non-BR music by Vangelis or others. As you say, there certainly are a lot of them, but the more modern ones tend to be more comprehensive and have better audio quality as more music has surfaced and better tools for audio restoration have become available. I hope that helps.

C. P. Cavafy, recitation by Sean Connery, music by Vangelis - Ithaca (2004) (https://mega.nz/#!51czzCzL!k36ndOBGj8F8seQ5EZ5DFXcjvL887cf1KtWdYnecb6I)Ithaka

BY C. P. CAVAFY
TRANSLATED BY EDMUND KEELEY AND PHILIP SHERRARD.

As you set out for Ithaka
hope your road is a long one,
full of adventure, full of discovery.
Laistrygonians, Cyclops,
angry Poseidon—don’t be afraid of them:
you’ll never find things like that on your way
as long as you keep your thoughts raised high,
as long as a rare excitement
stirs your spirit and your body.
Laistrygonians, Cyclops,
wild Poseidon—you won’t encounter them
unless you bring them along inside your soul,
unless your soul sets them up in front of you.

Hope your road is a long one.
May there be many summer mornings when,
with what pleasure, what joy,
you enter harbors you’re seeing for the first time;
may you stop at Phoenician trading stations
to buy fine things,
mother of pearl and coral, amber and ebony,
sensual perfume of every kind—
as many sensual perfumes as you can;
and may you visit many Egyptian cities
to learn and go on learning from their scholars.

Keep Ithaka always in your mind.
Arriving there is what you’re destined for.
But don’t hurry the journey at all.
Better if it lasts for years,
so you’re old by the time you reach the island,
wealthy with all you’ve gained on the way,
not expecting Ithaka to make you rich.

Ithaka gave you the marvelous journey.
Without her you wouldn't have set out.
She has nothing left to give you now.

And if you find her poor, Ithaka won’t have fooled you.
Wise as you will have become, so full of experience,
you’ll have understood by then what these Ithakas mean.Right. I am having three different versions, but since one (a version shared here in 2011 by Guilli) is pretty similar to the other (a version also shared here in 2014 by Guilli), let's nail that down to two different versions for collection's sake.
The remaining one was shared privately by a Vangelis collector in 2012.

So. There's an original number one [let's call that the "original"], issued in a blue box containing the CD in a white paper sleeve and a book with paintings by Micheline Roquebrune Connery, the wife of Sean Connery, as also entered on the Discogs (https://www.discogs.com/it/C-P-Cavafy-Recitation-By-Sean-Connery-Music-By-Vangelis-Ithaca/release/3878822) site, and another original number two [let's call that the "Pendor" edition]. Both of them released in 2004 by the Athinais Cultural Centre as presented also on the Vangelis-rarities (http://www.vangelis-rarities.com/index.php?methode=methode1&id=180) site.

Which is which is for the owner of the originals to know.

To complicate the matter further, as for everything Vangelis, I might have my personal edits, so there's also a remastered original version and a remastered Pendor edition.

Confusing?

Indulge me. :)

Hi there

Russian avant-garde composer of (mostly) electronic music Mikhail Chekalin (http://www.chekalin.net/index.php?lang=english) now available on Bandcamp.

https://mikhailchekalin.bandcamp.com

If you never heard Mikhail's music before, I'd recommend start from "Night Pulsation" ('cause it contains more "traditional" stuff).

Well I hope someone does do this (and all the other Andromeda bootlegs too while they are at it!) but personally I dont hold out much hope. My guess is whoever did the Andromeda versions only gave them to a select few who agreed not to share them in return, because they never seem to be shared or up for sale. It's 320ish.

And the only "complete-ish" version of Alexander you'll ever acquire is a RIP of whichever of the three iterations of the film you take it from. This is just a re-arrangement of the official release and the FYC.

Many thanks for this Ophonax.
According to Antas there are 2-3 versions of the Andromeda bootleg. The first is a single disc AM0102 and the second/third ones AM0103 and AM0103B are expanded 2 disc versions. The second one had a glitch which I believe was put right on the third one.
This download is a 2 disc version but havent had time to properly investigate it yet.

---------- Post added at 08:55 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:24 PM ----------

Ok, just checked this out properly and it is good news! It must be the best Andromeda version AM0103B because it has all the correct tracks without the reported glitch and comes from an MPEG source, so great quality. it must be based on a rip from the Blu Ray soundtrack. Unfortunately this means there are SFXs but there isn't any dialogue. This is probably the best we can get of this soundtrack music because the recording sessions have not, and probably will not, be released.
The only artwork I know of are tiny pics on Antas's site here: http://www.vangelis-rarities.com/index.php?methode=methode1&id=57
So thanks again Ophonax. Now let's just hope some of the other Andromedas surface...

2012 - Alexander Complete Score ( 2012 Cimmerian Records - CRCD013) [Hi res MP3 sources decoded to WAV unfortunately---posted that for reference on the thread]

As pointed out by gururu (http://forums.ffshrine.org/member.php?u=251706) this should most likely be a 320kbps decode to WAV.

I did not have the time to check if all the cues are indeed edits off the official and the Academy promo since I am currently restoring three lost Alexander boots. And if gururu is right about the sources it can be redone in lossless format.
But I need some time to make it properly. I am sort of remaking some better edits for what arrived to us as:

2004 - Alexander - The Complete Score (mixed 128kbps MP3's and WMA's with the wrongest tagging ever)
2004 - Alexander - The Lost Tracks [a sort of rehash of the previous release anyway] (mixed 128kbps MP3's and WMA's with wrongest tagging ever)
2009 - Alexander [Expanded Score]-Lost Scores (OGG format)
2011 - Alexander [Storm Records] (MP3)

I cannot be sure if what made it to us is the actual content of the releases in question. But I did try to salvage what I am having for future reference. So expect a definitely better pretend-version of the above boots in the next posts! :)

Oh, by the way: The Francesco Andromeda boot is just another fake WAV that is currently being sold on eBuy... I did upload that a while ago and took it down for that very same reason.
Thanks for trying. Some might share a better version one day hopefully.

Some collectors I met during the years did have the original WAV's and even provided snippets of audio to confirm that they were having the real deal... but they might want to bring them in their coffins perhaps... So I cannot blame them really. Plenty of celestial music to listen to in the afterlife! Not sure if the top people there will allow for iPod's and smartphones though... :)
