I would nominate some songs except the ones I had in mind are already up :(.

Also, I am now done recording personal projects so now I can try my take on a cover of "Promise". Not sure if I want it to have a metal sound or not. I'm leaning on a sound that is somewhat hypnotizing though and not sure if metal can do it. Either way, I'll give it a go both ways and see which one I think sounds better.

It will sound lower (my guitar is in a Drop A setting) too just so you know.

Note: might want to turn down the volume a bit.

IDX

I actually took another listen to it and realized that it's faster than it should be. It's weird because it's obviously playing what I recorded exactly, but when I was listening to it again, I couldn't help but take notice.

But I've decided to stick with this kind of sound to it (it will set some kind of mood when it's completely done and that's what the Silent Hill music is known for) and am working on it as we speak :).

EDIT: that's a pretty good bassline. I do have a capo so I can go ahead and have it set to fit that higher tuning (my guitar is in Drop A). If I decide to do that, would you mind if I use that bassline? I don't have a bass guitar and I was going to send the finished copy of the song to my friend to add bass and drums, but I'm not sure if it'll be that kind of bassline or not...

Goren
12-25-2009, 08:52 AM
Yeah, no problem. I was just about to ask what tuning you had because it wasn't standard. Sadly I am not 100% good at tuning (I am ok at it) but if you can do it more power to you, man! :D Yeah, I basically recorded to see if it sounded alright I did it by ear (not a really hard bassline). So yeah, man if you can make the line fit.

IDX
12-25-2009, 10:03 AM
Luckily for me, my guitar pedal has a tuner built in so I make sure everything is good before recording. There's this site you can go to that will play an open string so you can tune it to match the sound (you can also adjust it to play a different note too).

http://www.get-tuned.com/bass_guitar_tuner.php

It isn't the one I used (my buddy that adds bass and drums to my stuff told me about it) and because his internet went out (I'm on Live), I can't ask him what it was. But this one looks alright so maybe it might be perfect for ya.

Goren
12-25-2009, 04:33 PM

I've played SH-SH:Homecoming excluding Origins cus I only got the chance to play a little of it. I love the first one, probably my favorite but it ties with 3 moreso in that respect. The 2nd one was pretty great and seems to be the most favored by most people. I didn't really like the whole change of story that didn't really tie in with what the first one introduced, but it was still great and the most emotionally compelling. I think 3 was the scariest and it was cool to finally play a girl and it tied in with one, but they killed Harry :( 4 was great except for the ghost, I hated them. But honestly the whole theme and psychological set-up was well thought out and I enjoyed it. Homecoming...sigh...this game I have not finished cus it pissed me off. The game is awesome, but the sloppy combat, scarce health drinks and far placed save points don't help matters. Don't know if I'll ever work up the desire to finish it really. And I don't feel like starting over since I'm at the part where you go under the Town Hall and get the ceremonial knife and have one health drink D: blah

^Nope.....2 didn't go on with the same storyline as 1. I mean with the cult setting and Demon god stuff, not meaingbeing exactly like the first. I was wondering why exactly James was called to SH to be punished. Who was punishing him? Mary's ghost? And why? Didn't understand why the demons and/or cult would care about it really. I could understand why Harry was there, because of Cheryl's tie with the cult, but not James. Didn't really fit in with the cult theme. But it was an excellent game. Very sad especially the letter at the end. And I love the story and plot twists, just don't completely understand the overall deeper parts I guess. Maybe I missed something :/ but I've played it a good many times and don't remember it being explained. Pyramid Head was a kick ass concept and I enjoyed taking out that stalker and his buddy though!

SH2 was a great game. At first, I didn't like how it had nothing to do with the first game but now that I think about it, it was a great game and didn't need to have a tie in with the first to enjoy the "Silent Hill experience".

And not only was Pyramid Head kick-ass, but I really liked how he came to be and his whole part in the story (not the movie. He was there as pretty much eye candy). Now, I think I like SH2 the best out of the series. I really enjoyed the endings and I fell in love with the music (enough to where I'm doing a cover song of "Promise". And I don't like doing things that other people have done). And I can almost relate to James as to him punishing himself. Not to the same degree mind you, but I do beat myself up a lot and actually wished to be hit in the face because of something I did.

As for Homecoming, you might want to just stick to it. It's not as hard as the other games when it comes to the puzzles (except that one puzzle in the attic. First time I played it, that damn thing took me about an hour to do) and you'll eventually get used to the battle system. I know it took me a while but I do admit that the game has grown on me and am kinda glad that it's part of the SH universe.

illlaymedown
12-30-2009, 05:11 AM
No, I do get how the story in 2 is compelling and I am most certainly more about characters than most but ultimately all these weird happenings are going on in Silent Hill because of the cult happenings and their demonic religion in essence, so I don't see how James fits into that. Yeah, he punishes himself, but the town is also doing so...I mean Maria is made up by the town to punish him. Why does the town call him for him to be punished? Maybe the demonic forces just thought he'd be nice to play with or fun to torture or whatever, I just don't see much of a reason for it beyond that.
Oh don't even get me started about the movie. Granted it was one of the better video game made into movies but that's not saying much.
And Henry is so the cutest character in SH <3 :)

James and Mary went there, so it had special significance for them. There's a theory about how there's a mass of energy surrounding the town for various reasons (including the fact that it's built on a civil war cemetery, iirc.) and how that impacts everyone who is predisposed to being affected.

it's in SilentPyramid's plot analysis.

Also, 4 confirms that James and Mary never came back from Silent Hill (the first time they went).

Discussion aplenty.

I just do not want to start ALL the way over....I got pretty far and it pisses me off I have to start over and go through all that annoying combat crap again. I'm sure eventually my curiosity and love for the atmosphere will compell me to play again at some point, but man I don't wanna do all that crap again. And I really hate the combat system. Hmm makes some sense. Don't remember anything about a cemetary and it's been a while since I played 4 so I don't recall anything about James or Mary in it. So in that theory anybody who goes to SH is forever affected by it. That can fit, still a little iffy but it's interesting as well. And I'm not sure what SilentPyramid is so sorry. That is very interesting though that they didn't ever leave SH. Gives the game a little more depth for me :)

I think the reason why I came to like SH2 so much is because, like in the first one and all the other SH games, I have to get every ending. During this time is when I noticed little things about the game that I didn't notice the first time (the feeling I get during certain scenes and the musical piece that is playing during certain cutscenes. It really does a good job at setting the mood for what is going on) among other things. I guess I also learned a little more about James and felt very sorry for him. And the endings also helped in that aspect.

I can't really explain what I'm trying to say but it's the best I can do. But personally, I don't really care about the whole cult thing. Sure it's interesting when dealing with the past of SH, but it does nothing for me beyond that.

Cracked open Shattered Memories today... it's interesting. It kind of lacks the overall "Silent Hill" experience I'm used to, but I'm only 10 minutes into the game so it deserves a fair shake.

One thing I noticed is that Cybil doesn't look anything from the original game and from the preview trailers. I think it may have had something to do with how I answered the survey at the start of the game...

Neg

I got to the first nightmare side, and I can't get past it for the life of me. The game isn't even telling me which way to retardedly gyrate to get those bastards off me, anymore. So, I'm just getting grabbed by the first one to get to me now and I'm dead.

I hate having to run, I want to look at every inch of the game, but I have to run like a moron and in circles, because the game promised me GPS but there's no exit marked.

I'm ready to throw my shit out a window. A hundred million times worse than when I played Uncharted.

But, I refuse to believe that the rage I feel right now is because of this. This is just a symptom, not the cause.

I'll try again when I actually feel like a human being. But seriously right now I'm ready to sell my Wii and this game.

FAO Neg:

I had one of them latch on to me as I was trying to climb a wall... I think you have to jerk the Nunchuk and Wii Remote towards yourself to shake them off... at least, that's how I got one of them off of me.

The exits are marked though... you have to look for a wall or door that's highlighted in a blue color...

There's a ton of those, I'm running in circles. I shouldn't have to jerk at all. Shame on Nintendo for using motion controls needlessly.

I did play through SH2 recently though. Man that game makes me sad. But I played through it entirely in the dark this time, but it doesn't matter if it's daytime/nighttime it'll creep you out and mess with your head equally. Played through most of it in a single night because I couldn't put it down.

I ended up with the Leave ending. I remember when I first first played it originally I got the In Water ending on the first playthrough.

Oh, and you looked so happy here...

I made the mistake of playing, again.

In terms of what Allen is calling honesty (you can read this after you clear the first nightmare side):

Why am I coloring, with a Wiimote? This is petty, but, it brought into focus my huge, underlying gripe with the game. I have this inclination to answer as I would answer, but I want to answer as Harry. Problem is, we can only guess, to a small degree what Harry would say.

I don't want to paint my psyche on Harry. It's not fair. This isn't a blank slate SH protagonist that we can customize into ourselves. It's Harry Mason. He's a stoic motherfucker. He's not a twisted fuck like me. I don't want him to be ;;

I really am going to commit to not playing it right now, because I don't want this to continue. But, that seemed like a significant revelation in terms of how I feel, right now.

So, I'll just leave it here, documented.

My opinion about 0: I think that Origins ruins what 1 has implied, from alessa's past to her purpose and Travis is character that I don't find believable to me. Basically it ruins my vision that I have about 1, which is my fauvorite SH.

I don't know what other people say about Origins.

Alright finished my first playthrough of Shattered Memories and it was good and very different. Could have done without the action/nightmare sequences. I didn't find them scary or thrilling, merely an annoyance. Definitely not something I look forward to on future playthroughs. Had two glitches occur: when I first meet Cybil in the diner the dialogue cut out and then it went to the closeup but the camera proceeded to move through her head. And at the psychiatrist's during the marriage discussion the scene moved very fast, almost as if it was sped up on a VCR. Maybe they were glitches or maybe the game was just messing with my head, dunno.

FF4 > SH:SM.

If it wasn't for some graphical bugs (like the flashlight making some really weird line appear) I'd say it's near FF2.

And, as we all know, SH2 ≥ FF2

Played. Beat. On replay.

In short review:

A cool game with some good concepts.

The core psychological aspect is fresh, interesting. Definitely worth the replay. I look forward to seeing what changes with a new profile.

Agree with avi, the nightmare escape sequences only hurt the game imo. Not scary. Not interesting. A waste. Almost completely abandons the game's strengths: exploration and puzzle solving.

Didn't need to be a SH. It feels like they had a solid concept that would have better worked with original characters as a new IP. It's not impossible for me to like a re-imagining, but I find this first step is plain not as good as landmark as SH1's. It definitely shatters memories of the initial series, but imo reassembles the pieces into an overall lesser product.

Arigeitsu159
01-27-2010, 08:51 PM
Perhaps it's too soon for me to make this sort of judgment on the game, but I'm having a hard time wanting to pick the game up and play it. After spending about 30 minutes with it, it was interesting to explore, but it ultimately lacks what I'm come to grow used to out of a Silent Hill game. I mean, between this game, New Super Mario Bros Wii, Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles, and Resident Evil 5... this game would be the absolute last choice at the moment for me to want to pick up and play out of my library...

I just need to find some more motive to play this...

I squeed over this location:
MALL! MALL! FUCKING MALL! Even got to explore its nightmare side to get the colors for Tookie's nose! There was only one...thing left so I could hang out ^____^

Also, the nightmare sides aren't super detailed so you aren't missing as much as I thought I was, initially. Pretty well designed to be dashed through.

Anyone else notice the pink rubber ball in the mall? Like the one in the original Midwich? :D :D :D

Also since it's established that the creatures only appear during the nightmares, it lessens the creepiness of the story/investigating parts since you know that you will never encounter one behind any door or past any corner. It makes things predictable in that sense. And due to this the scariness/creepiness factor is seriously lacking in the game. I don't think I was scared once during the game.

Obviously spoilers

Ok its established that that order of the games are as followed Zero, 1, 3. Homecoming. I say homecoming because of Travis's cameo at the beginning of the game.

While 2, 4 are only linked because of Walter Sullivan. Though 2 only mentions him.

Now we have Shattered Memories.

Shattered Memories I believe takes place (obviously) a couple years seeing as Heather is in her teens in SH3. Yes, I am going to try to link 3 to SM. So please hear me out. Silent Hill 3 has three endings Normal, Possession and UFO ending. I'll get to UFO last.

Lets first go with Normal in the end of that ending Heather tells Douglas to call her Cheryl. A couple of years have gone by and she starts having reoccurring nightmares where she then seeks a Therapist (Dr. K). She tells him about her father, Harry Mason. Keep in mind while Harry was alive, Harry might have told her about his venture to get Cheryl in the first SH but obviously in her story somethings aren't placed right. The names are there but she doesn't know how they looked like. Explaining why you can see people that are the same but look different and their attitudes change. We come to the ending where she then finally is at peace and lets go of her father, Harry Mason is dead. Cheryl - "You've been with me for so long" Harry - "I'll always will be" Or you can get the ending where she quiet can't let go of the fact that Harry had died and if she would have been home sooner she would have helped him survive in SH3. Cheryl - "Why did you have to die, it wasn't my fault. Someone has to take the blame." Harry - "Forget me." That's my theory for normal ending.

Now we move to Possessed. It's somewhat the same as normal, but with her being possessed, authorities find her next to her victim Douglas and she is somewhat unstable and is taken to an asylum. After years, she is then seen by Dr. K. and mixing up with what Harry has talk to her about in his ventures in SH. In her story Harry died in 3, but her time in in the asylum she makes an imaginary father which she thinks is alive and so then she says "Dad you are a Hero, the man who died, that wasn't my father, That isn't who I remember. Those memories are all I have, you're all I have." Harry "I'm not even a ghost." Dr. K then comes up with a synopsis and Cheryl is told to start seeing him for help. That concludes Possessed.

Now to the fun part UFO. The UFO endings are linked with the Dog endings. Origins shows Travis meeting the aliens and Mira Shiba Inu (Dog). Travis goes to get his truck and is returned to Earth and Mira stays in Silent Hill for stuff you might see coming. Harry then meets the aliens in 1 with his famous line. At this time Mira is taking over control of what happens in Silent Hill 2 she basically fucks with James the whole time until he shows up in his ending Dog Ending. After getting over that he meets the aliens with a similar line to Harry he is zapped and is taken in with Harry. Cheryl/Heather knew about the aliens that's why when she gets home she isn't surprised the aliens are there. Of course James is there too. Aliens go to Silent Hill to bust some heads and Mira is found where she is then either killed or taught a lesson. We then move to SM UFO ending Cheryl Shiba Inu (Dog) seeks therapist one of the aliens. Where Cheryl (Dog) says "My mother WAS a bitch." Referring to Mira her mother. Oh and James is there too. :D That is my theory of UFO endings. You can say Elle and Alex are taken by different aliens seeing as you don't see the aliens in that ending.

Ok, now its the best and most fun part. Find open spots to brake my theory and maybe awesome discussion might happen. :D

Neg
06-17-2010, 03:26 AM
2 and 4 are linked by Rachel--Laura and Mary's nurse--and Frank, not just Walter. Also, the literal interpretation of "There was a Hole here" partnered with the holes filled with bodies just outside of Labyrinth.

Did Harry tell her about SH? The journal is there. Did she know about it before reading that?

Oh, and you know for a fact Homecoming is well after 0, 1, and 3 :p

Harry probably might have mentioned stuff from there. Told her stories about SH. Didn't she already know Harry wasn't her real father... she had to have asked how and stuff, or did she learn that after?

Ha! Depending on what you did in the game that scene is shown. So if you didn't get it its possible, Also, what if Harry was married to A Dahlia? Huh? They are divorced you see? Cheryl was young when that happened. Dahlia in SM has an unknown last name, Dahlia in 1 has a last name, Gillespie.

Neg

So, her mother just showed up after all those years?

Also, I think her name is said in some voicemails. I'll see if I can find out.

Harry had primary custody. Also, depending on what you do, Cheryl had a sour relationship with her mother.

Neg

Can't find it in the faq on memos. Could have sword the one near the beginning that calls Dahlia a whore actually said Gillespie.

Not a single mention of Gillespie is in that game, I believe.

Neg
06-17-2010, 07:10 AM
Harry from 1's wife died before the original game!

What are we smoking tonight that we don't remember these things?

So, you're saying Harry had a secret new wife, who suddenly appears after the events of 3?

Goren
06-17-2010, 07:44 AM
Harry's wife died, Harry re-married and that lady was Dahlia making her the step-mom and of course in SM she doesn't care much for her... judging by how she imagined her back then. She mixes up the meeting with Dahlia with the events in 1 since A Dahlia is in it. Cheryl never got to know her mother. She met Dahlia.

Mira controlled Silent Hill all the way up until 3, as its always mentioned Henry was just there at wrong time and was just unlucky. Walter did his magic then. Cheryl (Dog) didn't like Mira's actions. :(

As for that video...looks like it might be pretty good! Can't wait :D!!

I haven't seen gameplay footage of it but I assumed it will play as a House of the Dead kinda thing. So besides the Wii being the more "smart" system to port it, it can be ported to others except you might want to get one of those gun controllers. Either that or cross-hairs will be on the screen that you move with the analog stick and shoot with a trigger or button.

Neg

Seems IDX is joining me in my Halloween marathon. I haven't played a SH since Jan/Feb-ish, iirc, so this should be hella fun times. He brought up the question of order, and while I can't speak for him, I used his query as the catalyst to making my decision on the matter.

1
2
3
4
Origins
Homecoming
Shattered Memories

It pulls the narrative of the odds right out of sequence, but oh well. They chose to name the new one 8 (for the time being) so lmma dance this wonky dance. For a change of pace I'll be playing 1 on PS3 and Shattered Memories on PS2. Yeah, I did end up buying a PS2 copy. Fanboy gloty.

You could just choose to not play SM. That's an easy enough solution. But, no pressure at all. Do what's fun for you :)

The crime scene tape that you can find at the overpass if you trek back over there later in the game could mean two things.

1.) It's for the dead body that you can see in this picture (that I've never seen before because I had to bump the brightness all the way up to even see it this time).
2.) Even if the patient demon really is a human being that James killed, all he did was kill a murderer.

That's 1 murder absolved :p

Actually I never played the latest ones yet, though I do know about them. Also you mis-read me. I said I need to get the first four games as in buy. I never said that I didn't play the first four games. I've played SH 1 and 2 and a little of SH 3 but never finished it. I'll probably pick up homecoming someday. Not sure if I'll pick up origins. As for Shattered memories, All I know about that game is that the play style is different, it's a odd re imagining of Silent Hill 1, and the ufo ending. Is it worth playing. When I say get the first four I mean I need to strat tracking them down on Ebay or something to play them before they really become hard to get being collector's items and all.

Progress report 1

Couldn't give Eddie any juice. Tried to remember which apartment that butterfly room with the hole was in, remembered garbage shoot and figured try it first. Closer anyway.
Dropped juice pack and got went down and got the coin and the news paper about the killer guy.

Checked map and noticed there's a building on the left side, and one doorway on the 2nd floor which I forgot about. Jumped next door and stuck my hand in the toilet. (I don't know is it was shit or something else and if something else would that even make it better?) I'd have thought I'd use the nails on the stick first before going wrist deep in poopy. In fact, why didn't I reach for that key with the stick before the girl kicked it away?

That safe gave me trouble, not what to do, enter the numbers found in the crapper wallet but how to do it. I've never been able to get those turning locks to work but after trial and error I figure it out that the turns meant the direction of the stick not the wheel.

I now have 100 rounds of 9mm ammo. Kinda makes me nervous for what's to come if all of a sudden I'm allowed that much at one time.
Leave room.
Kill thing.
Fuck no map.
Hey that looks like a map.
Yup it is.
Fuck what the hell is hurting me? Shit I keep stubbing my toe or there's a water monster in those pools or something. Health pack. Use it.
Bugs! Why can't I club them? I'll try shooting them! It worked it's not moving! I'll club it now that it's not moving. Never mind it's dead but the legs thing isn't. Ouch they kill when they're on the floor.
I guess I need to find a bunch of coins and put them in the order the riddle says to get the key to the apartment on the 2nd floor and in that place is my next object.

Why did I convince that women to give up her knife? That's probably how she got around without dying. Not that can't just out run those things most of the time but I feel bad for disarming her.
Go back to the new found red paper, save and quit.

Most of the time you need to clear the game on hard and have all the endings to get 10 stars, so there is a purpose.

Of course, I'd prefer if they were all like Origins and you could do each thing on a seperate playthrough instead of trying to do everything at once.

Progress report 2

I can't get upstairs and fear I'll need to backtrack over the entire 2 apartments and while the monsters don't seem to come back I don't want to take any unnecessary risks.
What, it's just 3 coins? Well I've got them all them! Women tempter that would be the snake, and it's open. Now run down stairs and unlock the door. It won't open but now that I think of it there was one stairway that was locked and probably be opened again.

Shit pyramid Head! Door's locked, stair's flooded, the stairway up ways is gone and no other thing to interact with. Well I shot him with some effect in the cutscene so let's try the gun, I've got 109 rounds in addition to the 10 in the mag. I know I'm not an army guy or cop but you'd think he's actually aim for the exposed flesh instead of the heavy metal armor.... Well anyway let's try the stick. Ok there should be some type of pattern, ya know this guy seems offensively over hyped. He's not very fast and I can pretty easily dodge him. I don't seem to be inflecting any damage there's just got to be something I'm missing. Damn he killed he! Damn I keep dying! I'll try using the knife while being close to him after a heavy swing, and no that's not it. Well I don't ahve any new items and I can't seem to find any weaknesses I guess I'll try just whacking him again until I think of something. It's getting very tiring restarting in that room and walking down that hallway again and again. I've been killed 3 times when I was behind him after he swung the sword! Now after just wailing on him he's acting funny and now he's walking into the water. Now it's drained.

Outside again! And a first aid kit. Use it and at almost full health. Oh Yeah the park is the place to be! Great now I have a tag along and she'll probably get us killed 10 times before I get her to the next checkpoint where she'll die or betray me anyway. I guess it's better than having that little girl around. Ouch those leg things deal some damage! Dammit what did I say? She's getting hit by the monsters and by he while I save her from the monsters! A motel. Maybe some items and a save. Yes Save and quit for tonight.
