Ok, since I was invited here I will give my 2cents.

I have only played Silent Hill 1-3. SH 2 being my favorite. That game freaked me out and the story was the most memorable. 1 was also very good, but it was on the PS1 so the graphics were not great. If they ever came out with a revamped version of SH 1, that would be awesome. Maybe add some extras.

Now as for the movie, I thought it was great that the french director (whatever his name is) actually played the game and liked it so much that he made it an effort to make the movie follow the same elements as the game.

That impressed me a lot. Yes granted, movies always have their own take on a videogame series. Often it is for the worse and fans can not really appreciate what they have done. But this was not the case for me with the SH Movie.

He even incorporated the same camera shots like they did in the SH game and he had a lot of familiar characters in the movie as well. Not to mention the music was from the game.

It was perhaps one of the best translations of a videogame turned movie.

Neg
07-08-2009, 06:17 PM
I can roll with that.

There's actually a reinvisioning of the original coming out later this year. We've talked about it here (the trailer is a page back, at the top. Should be Roki's post) and in Allen's Konami News Thread, which is also in this forum.

I highly recommend 4 and Origins.

StrictlyNinja
07-08-2009, 06:28 PM
That sounds good. I will have to check that out.

I have played 4, but not enough to give a full review. The concept seemed interesting though. (I think I may have played for 30 minutes at most at a friend's house.)

Also I want to play SH: Homecoming, even though it seems like they copied Resident Evil with their lead character. I kept thinking of Leon Kennedy for some reason when I saw the character you play as for Homecoming.

doomjockey

Leon is a total beefcake besides the bishie hair. And a complete badass. Alex is cool, I guess, but I think they made his head a bit wide. On occasion he gets this intense Daniel Craig-ish stare in his Jensen Ackle-ish face that is absolutely gorgeous. If I had to pick between either of them, it'd be a heck of a choice.

What am I saying? I'm a Heather man.

Kinda torn. Love the motel, but, as I said over in Shoot the Shit, the Sanitarium genuinely gives me the willies.

Sanitarium. It does its job, well.

Arigeitsu159
07-25-2009, 08:45 PM
Speaking of the Sanitarium, that's where I'm currently located. Just picked up the Basement key. Decided to stop there.

What the heck is the monster that can only be seen when you have the flashlight on? It's composed of a shadow and wearing some metal chest harness (is that what it is?)

On another side note... the controls in this game are a bit weird. I guess this is the "tank" controls. Although I've gotten used to it, I'm not too fond of it. In addition, Travis runs like a girl. Even Heather had more stamina than he does and she's a freakin' chick.

Neg

The controls of Origin were weird for me too. I personally like the 3D type that the others had.

I don't think I would have so much of a problem with it if the camera angles were better. Especially when you're in a room where there are tons of monsters in it. When you switch camera angles, you have to change the direction of the pad. It's annoying.

On the subject of the camera angle... for this game, it's close to fail. They position you in a way you have no idea what direction a monster is coming at you.

Anywho...

Neg
07-26-2009, 05:26 AM
Hmm, I don't remember the camera being a problem, well not enough that I had to bring it up.

Yeah, camera didn't bother me.

That's 2D controls for ya. You're on the screen and you want to go up, so you hit up ^_^ When the camera switches you are a bit more liable to return to where you were, if it's a quick switch, but that's tolerable to think up, hit up, and move up!

None of that hit right to move left because you're facing to the character's right XD

Neg
07-26-2009, 07:12 PM
Carrion. And yes, they drove me nuts until I decided that I needed to start using melee items if I was going to keep health items.

Chuck a toaster at 'em and then stomp 'em.

I'd say you only have to worry about spoilering the 'human' enemies.

Arigeitsu159
07-27-2009, 12:40 AM
Is there an actual limit to the number of items you can hold? So far, I've picked up a lot of melee weapons (I've hardly used any of them) and it doesn't seem to affect me having the ability to pick up health items.

I usually just run past the Carrion's unless they're in a corridor with a tight squeeze... at which point, I just use the pee-shooter sting pistol on it.

Neg
07-27-2009, 12:44 AM
Nope, no limit. I just meant that I was trying to punch them and I'd always get hit and I'd have to reset a thousand times if I didn't want to use all my health items.

I'm usually really stingy about disposable items, but there's tons of melee weapons in the game. So, melee away.

It did, however, get me the...Brawler accolade.

Careful, he might enter your dreams and rip your guts out again and again without being able to wake up. You will forever wonder that hellish place...SILENT HILL. The only way out is in. Kinda stuck right now

I got the gas and drained the basement and played the tape. Talked to the judge, found the doctor's place. Now I need like 3 different keys :S

I like it, so far. Combat is a step up for the series. A Silent Protagonist rolling around like Link? Bestill my blackened heart <3

Very beginning of the story is sorta confusing, guess it'll make sense later.

Looks like someone's getting a crush on Alex... ;) As soon as I make my last run in Silent Hill Origins (to obtain my last accolade), I think I'll go back and play Homecoming just for the heck of it. I would have to say it was my favorite of all of them so far.

Are you talking about the Smog demons? If so, the handgun is the best weapon for the job. When they open their chest and their lungs are revealed, take a shot at it. Two or three bullets usually takes them out. This would be an enemy I highly suggest you not use melee weapons on considering they're more of a pain to kill this way.

I really don't see the point of "trophies" or "achievements". For me, it just shows how much of a life you lack.

I met this one guy on Xbox Live who had over 100,000 gamerscore points. I asked him how old he was. He said 28 (sounded very nerdy). I asked him when was the last time he had sex. He said never. I then said he has a high gamerscore. He then replied he just sits at home all day and plays xbox because there's nothing better to do. Also, don't like hearing the little 7 year olds bragging about their 30-something-thousands points because they think they're better than you and THEY WON'T SHUT UP ABOUT IT!! IT'S SO AGGRAVATING!

I was shocked.

Arigeitsu159

You could say that, I guess. Considering this game was originally on the PSP, I can't imagine them getting to difficult with puzzles on a hand-held... but I don't know...

But yeah, the puzzles were a bit easy.

Working on the third one for the first time right now. I'm in the construction building at the moment, trying to open the elevator.
Also working on earning all the accolades in Origins. Achieving the fireman one seems to be the most tricky for me. I'm still find myself getting lost in the Sanitarium, too... LOL.

Just curious, how do you have all the accolades to one save file? Do all of them have to be earned within one complete gameplay to do that?

Neg
08-13-2009, 07:02 AM
No, just load a clear file and all the previously earned ones will be there. Rinse and repeat til you have them all.

Playing 1 and then 3 is a pretty good idea. Just like playing 2 and then 4.

If it wasn't for Homecoming, SH would have a even/odd structure like RE. Well, hell RE has stuff like Code Veronica, so yes, we do have an even/odd system. Since we might actually get a 5 someday.

As I said then, we'll cross that bridge when it rusts off its foundations.

Arigeitsu159
08-13-2009, 07:54 PM
Well, the only reason I assumed I would be number 5 was because the game was originally called "Silent Hill V" (early screenshots and video trailers) before it was officially changed to "Homecoming". So, I guess like you said, we'll have to see...

But if it ends up where another game becomes the official "5" of the series... I'll change my number to 4.5. ;-)

Neg

Don't get me wrong, I think the game looks promising as far as graphics is concerned. It's just that I'm a little concerned about the overall trademark changes (rust to ice; running instead of fighting enemies). I mean, I run around most of the enemies in a SH game anyway (to conserve ammo) on my very first run of a SH game, but... man, to not fight back at all... just not sure how that's going to fair in this.

IDX

I'm pretty good at just imagining that I don't have any memories of a certain series if they make a remake or change the storyline a little (like the Initial D live action movie). So if I imagine that I've never played any of the Silent Hill games (or if you do too), this Shattered Memories game might actually be pretty creepy/good.

Well, creepy always equals good in the SH universe. Which I wish I lived in. Day to day...

My brother was the original Silent Hill fan, but after 2, he lost interest and I started picking up the games regularly.

The only one I have to re-buy is origins. I lost it and I am not able to find it for a couple of months now. :/

I do too. But I think I'll get the PS2 version. Sure I have it already for PS2 (a burned copy), but I want the actual copy. Just not sure if I should get the PS2 one or the PSP one.

Neg

I'd like a second copy of 1. I'd also like it to come out on the PS store.

Man, Didn't Europe get SH and US got RE or something like that?

If true that is lame, I'd take SH over RE anytime. Not saying RE is bad I like both, but I'd prefer SH.

Pretty good prices compared to buying it somewhere.

I was stuck on the solution to the clock puzzle in the house. I stumbled across it, and then was like man why would I think the room number would be the time o_O

Why was there a third mask? Just to throw you off?

Really wanted flashbacks from the house, now I just know that his dad did vile things. Ooooh, tell me something I didn't know

Gonna have to think about the solution to the power plant.

Love the Order soldiers, I jumped like a punk when they came running up. HUMAN ENEMIES YAY!!...ENEMIES OH SHIT! So you can dodge like I do, I don't care, I just turn and keep on hacking (shades of the last fight of Phantom Hourglass, mir?)

I know I'm sounding really critical, but I do like it a lot, in spite of some of the wonked puzzles/storytelling

Valves were easy after I found the note. Imagine that :D The prison was pretty damn good times. Asphyxia is fast as shit! I'm in the church, I've got tons of health items, Schisms are my bitches, life is good. The logic puzzle in the prison was nice, but easy, nonetheless. I was copying down the symbols to think about it while I was taking a break from playing, but as soon as I started writing the clues it was like, okay, poison....knight.....Nothing!

Arigeitsu159

I hate the Schisms. I find their attacks to be the most unpredictable out of all the monsters when it comes to using Melee weapons. I usually just use the shotguns on those mofos. :) Glad to hear the game is getting more entertaining for you, Neg.

As for the prison puzzle, that one took me a while to figure out... especially the last symbol. Like I mentioned before about another puzzle, maybe it was just me being an idiot...

Neg

Neg's Schism Method:

More than one Schism--One shotgun blast, run up to him, X-X-Square combo with the axe. Dead.

One Schism (or one left)--Circle around him until he rears back and does his little dance. He'll run forward and stop. Roll up to him and X-X-Square him with the axe. ROLL THE FUCK AWAY, RIGHT NOW.

Rinse and repeat.

The only problem I had in the prison was the stupid wires. I could be at it for almost an hour trying to get it.

I think it wouldn't have been so bad if they actually had given some intuitive hint like the first one, but not as obvious as the first one.

It uses the lights on the side, just like the first one.

Drill bit to the fucking chin, motherfucker!!!

I feel kinda shitty about having to kill Curtis. I mean, yeah, he was going to kill Elle. Well, we don't really know that. He did take his time and he said his mantra "It's a shame people mistreat such nice things." Who knows, maybe he would have just cut her lose if Alex hadn't barged in. Probably giving him too much credit, but oh well. Loves me some Curtis.

If Wheeler comes back again and lives, it's going to be the greatest riff on the black-dude-dying ever. I'll squee pretty hard.

Jeebus, Gandalf was right. You have way too few health items at the beginning and in the middle of the game, and a TON at the end. I've got 6 health drinks, 6 first aid kits, and 3 Syrums.

Raise your hands, who thought the guy on the floor in room 302 was going to jump up because they mentioned experiments? (unless that happens later, but it's still a valid question).

I really like losing your inventory for some strange reason, I just think it's fun, so I'm rather happy it has made a return for the first time since 2.

I too thought that guy was going to jump up at me. Also, if you don't find you're stuff, then after you reach a certain point, you won't be able to go back and get it and have to fight the final boss hand-to-hand. Basically, with the steel pipe. I did it before and was a little pissed I didn't get any kind of achievement for it. Like "Beat so-and-so without using any guns" or something. But hey, got the hospital ending with it :D!

Neg
08-17-2009, 02:40 PM
I haven't really been using the pipe/crowbar. Replacing your weapons w/in categories works, since we've never had multiple iterations of weapons before, and SH isn't really RE enough to warrant buying weapons and therefore being able to choose and upgrade, within a limited framework.

I could see that kind of system being in a future Silent Hill, but there is something pretty organic to finding the weapons in this series that would be lost, if they did.

Like getting your second pipe from that tortured body. I was really hoping they'd come up with something like that for each of the weapons, w/in the compound. Oh well, no big loss, just would have been neat.

Ceremonial Dagger is aces, and I'd love a replica for my wall. Is it just me, or is there something violent and sexual about the way Alex sticks it in locks? Moment of hesistation and then BAM!

yeah, I did a Deviant Art dive this morning, sue me:

Well, I received my copy of SH2 and plan on playing it as soon as it gets good and dark. To be honest, SH2 is the only SH I've played all the way through. For the others, I just watched playthroughs on YouTube.

And Neg, your Deviant Art dive inspired me to do one as well.

This might be a nice added level to the next Kingdom Hearts...

Neg, who is the chick that is facing Sheva in your artwork?

Edit: I'm guessing that is Elle?

I thought that woman thought it was Cybil, but I guess Neg would know.

Neg

I'm pretty sure the description didn't say, because I'm pretty sure I checked it for that reason. I'm thinking it's Elle too, since she helps Alex in HC, just as Sheva helps Chris.

Just in a more puzzle-type way, instead of bullets and wasting health items :D

Let's vote, do we just want to make this thread spoiler central now? Seems like it'd be easier.
