Sweet. I've got all the pics uploaded, the lists randomized and the match-ups set. I'm halfway through writing the first round (16 of the 32 matches format coded with the pics embedded). That way, if I'm unable to, Allen can post rounds just by copypasta'ing them from the completed document.

Please, still suggest places you'd like to see in. I can swap them in no problem.

Where's Ari and DJ :( I feel really sad now, because we'll only have 4 people voting and that doesn't really work ;_;

Did you know you can go on the bus in the original? I didn't know til 5 minutes ago.

Oh, wait. nvm.

Neg

What are these locations? I tried to enter both and NO GO.

IDX
10-08-2009, 02:38 AM
I really don't think you can even go inside those places... At least, I don't remember anything about it.

Is the school bus on the map?

Neg
10-08-2009, 02:45 AM
Doesn't look like it. Those buildings I circled are pink like all the other places you enter. Maybe the map was made before the final pass of the game and those areas weren't completed.

IDX
10-08-2009, 02:47 AM
Maybe. I haven't played the first one in a while. Have you tried entering them? I know you have the game.

Neg
10-08-2009, 02:51 AM
Yep, tried to enter both of them. Didn't even get a message that they were locked or anything.

I'm going to try to get to them in the nightmare streets.

IDX
10-08-2009, 02:56 AM
I don't even remember if any of those kinds of buildings told you they were locked if you tried opening them. I know in Homecoming it did but not in any of the others. If it's a place you couldn't enter, then nothing would show up.

WAIT!! THE ONE BY THE SCHOOL IS THE ENTRANCE TO THE SEWERS!

Neg
10-08-2009, 02:58 AM
Yeah, that's on the Residential area map. I posted the shopping district map :smrt:

IDX

Damn. It was worth a shot lol. I never actually ran into the sewers until I had to go inside so I have no idea where it actually is.

Neg
10-08-2009, 03:05 AM
I didn't on my first playthrough either. It's so dark at that point and you almost want to get into the school pretty badly. I usually wander around the streets leading to K. Gordon's house before going in now, picking up items and such.

Neg
10-09-2009, 03:15 AM
I was going to be upset that Andy's books isn't in the right location in 1, but lo and behold there is a sign advertising it in the resort area :o

Seriously, though, I need to re-read Silent Pyramid's plot analysis, because I'm having a hard time figuring out just how long a gap there is between Origins and 1. Alessa is clearly older, and it would give the town's layout time to change, if that is the intent.

Plus Dahlia has had time to age and start dressing like a religious loony instead of white trash :p

IDX
10-09-2009, 03:51 AM
I'd say probably around 10 years give or take.

Neg
10-09-2009, 04:01 AM
The Good ending sees the Flauros create a newborn baby that contains half of Alessa's soul, and Travis returning to his truck as Alessa carries the baby out of town. Through radio static, the player first hears that Harry Mason and his wife find and adopt the baby, naming her Cheryl, and then that Kaufmann and Dahlia plan to use a summoning spell to draw the other half of Alessa's soul back to the town, even though it may take a great deal of time (specifically, seven years).

It's been a while since I've seen the good ending. That damn Tesla rifle is just too inviting ;)

So, you were right.

Henry moves through holes, and some of them are in Silent Hill. One of them was in Neely's Bar (and arguably in Labyrinth), so why shouldn't there be in Blue Creek? He's a little hard up for cash, atm, and he figures he can hit up his old friend James.

Hell yeah. I wish I had an LCD instead of plasma though :(. I can't play my PS2 for too long or the image will burn (because it doesn't fill the whole screen, just the middle unless there's a widescreen option in the game).

Neg
10-15-2009, 12:25 AM
That sucks :( Are they still making plasmas? Or were they smart enough to stop production?

IDX

I know Vizio stopped. And as far as I know, the burning of images in plasmas was a way of the past. The owner of the comic book store that I get my games and stuff has a plasma that doesn't burn. He said they fixed it a long time ago.

I just happened to get the short end of the stick because it was a common thing among plasmas when I got mine :(. If I knew the hassle, I would've gotten LCD instead.

Just for Ari, atm:
Two of the birds on the crematorium puzzle are reversed. And that verse they say has nothing to do with Shakespeare actually describes Macbeth, BUT, the screenshot for the memo after you clear it, has Macbeth sitting as the last book because it supposedly wasn't mentioned. I just meant my av and sig. I think I've used Constantine all 3 years. I did have a real costume set up mostly, one year. I just needed to order the inkjet temporary tattoo paper.

Scored a semi-looking Alex Shepherd jacket today. Went to several places and had a hard time finding one. It's more olive green than beige, but it seems close enough. Just need to get a military flashlight and a walktalkie radio to hook to the jacket, as well as the infamous metal pipe.

There was this place that you could order dog tags from and have it say whatever you want, but I can't remember. It was years ago and my brother was telling me about it. I'm sure you can find some place online and have them make custom tags so Alex Shepherd would be the name or something.

Unless you just don't want to go into that much detail.

Neg
10-21-2009, 01:00 AM
I did not care for that crowbar. It shows up in the pre-rendered shots of the Scarlett fight, whether you have it equipped or not.

IDX
10-21-2009, 01:48 AM
That's true. But I never used the crowbar for melee attacks. It was the ax (before I got the alien pistol).

Hell, I even beat the final boss with the steel pipe because I forgot to grab the bag with my stuff in it. Since then, I have thought of a steel pipe as a great weapon in any scenerio (sp?).

Neg
10-21-2009, 01:53 AM
I need to spend more time with the game to try out other weapons, but the pipe was just really slow for me.

I used the dagger religiously. Hehe, yay puns :D

Goren

I was making fun, since Alex is the only Silent that loses his pipe... and if you retrieve your items then you lose it again...

IDX

That's because they've added "weapon upgrades" to the game. Which isn't like Silent Hill at all really because THEY KEEP EVERYTHING!

Neg
10-21-2009, 03:33 AM
You don't have to put the Shakespeare Anthologies back on the shelf in Hard Puzzle mode. You can keep them the whole game.

Neg
10-25-2009, 04:24 AM
Okay, so it says right on the map that Alchemilla is now the home of the mentally ill. I didn't pick up the map last time, in case you're curious as to why this is revelatory to me.

I wonder what prompted the switch. Did Brookhaven burn down? Get too full? Same questions for Cedar Grove. Brookhaven could so get it's own game like Arkham Asylum, I'd bet, if they were willing to tell its entire history.

I still want a Civil War-era entry in the series.

IDX
10-26-2009, 12:06 AM
Was it Alchemilla the hospital from the first game also? Or was it Brookhaven?

Neg
10-26-2009, 12:16 AM
Yeah, Alchemilla is in the original, and Origins. Only Alessa's room from it is in 3. It's a regular hospital, though. So, somewhere between Harry's visit and Alex's committal, it changed over. Heather's experience of it falls under spatial synthesis and so does nowhere, so yeah, after Harry visits it.

Brookhaven is in 2 and 3. It's in South Vale, so Harry and Travis never get over there.

IDX
10-26-2009, 06:29 AM
Gotcha. I keep forgetting that some of the games take place in different areas in Silent Hill.

Neg
10-26-2009, 10:52 PM
Okay, I used the map Allen found to make this. I need to double check on how much of the shopping district has changed for Alex when I get there, since I can't find a Homecoming map :( I'm also pretty sure Shepherd's Glen is to the West, hence the arrow.

Photobucket is a punk and keeps shrinking this, which defeats the purpose. So, here's a link to get your very own "complete" Silent Hill map. It's not really complete at all. adlfja;dlkfja;dlkfja;sdlfkja;sdflkj

I've been advised to look in a pawn shop, so I'm hoping I can find one there (especially with as many as there are in Austin).

Neg,
Where did you get that picture of Alex in your signature? Is that a game screenshot? It's pretty schmexy. :D

doomjockey

Then maybe I should say re-imagining because there's almost always the promise of updating more than just visuals. Which imo almost always comes with the promise of updating to attract a more "contemporary" fanbase.

Neg
10-28-2009, 06:13 AM
Oh, I know exactly what you mean. For the very most part the idea of remakes makes me cringe. The FF remakes drive me nuts for a number of reasons, but for some reason the graphics annoy me the most. I just think they look horrible. They carried over from III to IV, and the thought of VI being rendered as such makes me want to RIOT.

I've always had a soft spot for sprites, and I genuinely believe they look better than 3D hi-res graphics when done well. 3D rendered games on DS look pretty bad. There's a RPG coming out that's supposedly a love letter to old-school fans of the genre. But, it's got the round, generic character models used in III and IV, so I won't touch it. Phantom Hourglass is OK in this regard, I guess.

I also wonder just what criteria companies will use in remaking games. In another generation or two, will they want to remake games that have already been remade? Seems pretty slippery slope.

So, in general, yeah I don't like the idea of remakes and tbh it makes me somewhat glad that Shattered Memories is at least doing something new. I don't usually want remakes, but for some reason I've always thought SH would benefit from a small step forward (Origins graphics), even though it goes again my views on the subject in general.

Tanis
10-28-2009, 06:35 AM
I like remakes when they've been done right.

Klonoa for the Wii is a fantastic example of this.
They gave it an overall quality upgrade.
Graphic, music, translation, ect.
It was damn near perfect, even a few extras added in.

Or how about 'Resident Evil' for the gamecube?
Same thing, overall it was a fantastic fan service that game the game a more modern upgrade.

Same goes for 'Persona' for the PSP...fantastic.

The problem with most 'remakes' is that they really aren't remakes, they're piss poor ports.
And bad companies like 'Square-Enix', with their legion of stupid fans, have no problem exploiting the idiotic nature of said fans with lackluster port after lackluster port.

I call it the Madden (or I guess you could also call it the Dynasty Warrior) syndrome.

doomjockey
10-28-2009, 08:36 PM
SE's graphic updates scare the crap out of me. They have this thing with making all the architecture look weirdly futuristic no matter the setting. The last game that sold it well was Vagrant Story. Everything else looks contrived and inappropriate. Even Advent Children's look spoiled the setting of FF7 for me. And it's not even as big a jump from the prerendered backgrounds as it would be from the bit era.

"Done right" is pretty rare. RE remake for GC was very faithful to the original. But this Dark Side Chronicles thing they're on now doesn't agree with me.

But back to SH. I give Shattered Memories some wiggle room because they are not Team Silent and couldn't pull off the Team Silent feel. Even though I think they got close with Origins.

And I think I could understand Origins because I always have that could have done more doubt when the next major installment of a franchise is for some reason made into a handheld title.

Neg
10-28-2009, 09:54 PM
Looks like I was right on the money for Alex. The new locations aren't on the original maps, but that's kind of DUH. If Alchemilla has had time to become a mental hospital, there was certainly time to build a church, a cemetery, and a prison.

He did take his time and he said his mantra "It's a shame people mistreat such nice things." Who knows, maybe he would have just cut her lose if Alex hadn't barged in. Probably giving him too much credit, but oh well. Loves me some Curtis.

Another little piece of evidence towards my 'Curtis is a good guy' theory:

After getting the ceremonial dagger, if you backtrack to his shop after getting his picture by the Missing Persons board, the gate is locked, but there's a health drink and a bunch of shotty ammo.

Who else could have left that there ;)

Both of those places were fantastic. I didn't really get the same feeling in HC's hospital :(. I was disappointed.

Alchemilla (HC) is great for foreshadowing. It's short, but I think it works better as the intro it is intended to be than it does in Origins. I understand that they probably don't want to ever use it as a full level again, which is fine. Beyond introducing the back and forth aspect, it's a pretty sterile level in Origins. Thankfully, Travis has the house fire to compliment it in that respect. Maybe I should have put Dahlia's House/Alchemilla as the location in the rumble.

I got the UFO ending (on purpose, I know how to get what I want) so I can have the laser pistol next time. I think that'll be my last normal playthrough. I want to clear it on hard, since I've pretty well figured out what I need to do in terms of combat. I had oodles of healing items, this time, the whole time.

That is one issue I have with the game. Having it select items w/o you hitting X on the menus works great for the weapons. It makes it a really fast switch. However, it makes you use serums unintentionally  I would have had all 8 at my disposal in the last battle if it wasn't for that slippery selection method. It happened to me last time, it happened this time. At the exact same location to boot! (right before heading back through the covered bridge leading to Curtis's shop.)

It's annoying to have to hit circle or R1 just to bring up the other menu so I won't auto select serums

One of my favorite times in the SH games was when I had to go to the hospitals. I never did like hospitals for some reason so I enjoyed going "Oh no, now I have to go to the hospital!" while playing. I did like how that was the intro place in HC, but I guess I did feel it was too short for me to get excited about being there. It looked pretty creepy, but even that was missing something...

I accidentally got the UFO ending my first playthrough on Normal. I went to Hard mode afterwards and with the laser pistol, the game is incredibly easy in Hard mode to the point where you'll probably never have to use a serums or any kind of health item (assuming you're good to the point of not getting hit by just shooting them from afar).

Use the Up/Down directional buttons to switch weapons, Neg. Then you won't have to access the menu at all for your weapons. ;)

As for playing in hard mode... I'll just tell ya that if you use ammo a lot in a run through, you're definitely going to have to be conservative in Hard mode since they reduce the amount of ammo... especially in the Police Station with all the Schisms.

Neg
10-31-2009, 03:02 AM
Let's do the math on bullets needed for Neg:

4 for the Police Station (To take down one from the first wave, two from the second, one from the third)
3 for the Siam in the parking lot
3 for the Siam in the sewers
6 for the Siams in the church
1 for a schism in the church
10 or so handgun bullets for the Siam in front of the prison.

Is there 17 shot gun bullets in Hard Mode? Or 17 total Shotgun and Rifle bullets?

I can do the Schisms without bullets, tbh. Just takes time/care. 12 bullets.

I was wondering if you could fire up hard mode and get the pistol. I wouldn't do that, it'd be too easy :o

Neg
10-31-2009, 03:09 AM
Actually, the enemies take more hits in hard mode. Ignore the bullet count.

I can take as long as I need on Schisms. I'll just have to learn how to deal with Siams on that last normal playthrough. How hard can it be? Just need to effectively get behind them. I figured out Amnion this time pretty damn well. Seems like for the bosses, stringing together successful dodges gets you into position to strike. Imagine that.

IDX

I just shoot them with the laser pistol. Almost anything that isn't a boss dies with just one shot. The bosses take a few more lol.

You should be able to take out the Siams using the Axe (or Pipe/Crowbar). If you can effectively dodge/block their punches and hit their weak spot from behind, you can save your bullets.

In the Police Station, I generally ran away from the Schisms in the first encounter. What I would do is right after chopping down the barricade, I immediately run to the bathroom with the health drink. Wait for the two Schisms to enter and run past them and head to Interrogation Room, quickly grab the Health Drink there, and proceed to the small room with the two Schisms and kill them with the Shotgun. How you kill the remaining Schism from the garage is up to you though. :)

Neg
10-31-2009, 04:11 PM
I figured as much for the Siams. I like killing schisms too much to ignore them. Easily my favorite normal enemy in the game. Maybe because the police station was where I hunkered down and took the time to figure out the combat system.

Very true. I remember in some game magazine (I think it was Gamepro or something) that had a poll of which game was better: SH or RE. I can't remember who won but that pretty much started the rivalry between the two series in terms of which one can have a good story AND scare the shit out of people at the same time.

Neg

There's a level in Uncharted that is totally SH worthy. I squeed very hard.

It's weird, my gut instinct is to rebut the whole "3 being a step down from 2," but then I remember that it is way down my list from 2 and it suddenly seems like a totally idiotic notion to be existing in my head.

This is obviously part of why I didn't want to rank them at all.

Tanis

I'd say SH3 is 4th or 5th on my list.

SH2 - ? (PC)

Neg
11-04-2009, 05:30 PM
And yet you forced me to rank them :p

In all seriousness, I completely agree, though. I usually tend to champion things that other people dismiss or complain about, too. That certainly colors my love of 4, Origins, and Homecoming to a degree. At the same time, though, it's straight up affection, not only the need to root on underdogs. It isn't just a hollow, prideful, love founded IN SPITE of the crowd, it's that placed over a genuine love.

Tis awesome.

I'm going to work on what to do with the second round of the locations rumble, like today. We only have two more 'bouts before it's that time.

We need to be thinking about what we want to do after locations, as well. Allen and I have said it should probably be a few smaller rumbles before another large edition. Of course that probably means the music edition, which if it's going to be as large as locations, should probably be being planned starting now.

I had thought about letting Ari and IDX co-run it, but that'd be dependent on you guys being interested and having the time to get the work done. I'm not even sure if the music is readily available on youtube or that Blue Lagoon site that the FF guys here use.

Start thinking about that, and if you know anyone in the music forums who'd be interested, talk to them, too. Zoran was recommended by Jessie, but I haven't seen him around :(

Alright, here's what I got for the Weapons rumble. To keep it to 16, I've got iconic/special weapons only.

Iconic/Special to the series:

1.) Lead/Steel Pipe
2.) Alien Weaponry: Travis's Tesla Rifle, Harry's Hyper Blaster, James's Spray Can, and Alex's Laser Pistol.

Iconic/Special to Travis:

3.) Fists/Moon Gauntlets
4.) Cleaver
5.) Portable TV

Iconic/Special to Harry:

6.) Katana
7.) Rock Drill

Iconic/Special to James:

8.) Chainsaw
9.) Great Knife

Iconic/Special to Heather:

10.) Heather/Sexy Beam
11.) Beam Saber

Iconic/Special to Henry:

12.) Golf Clubs
13.) Holy Candles
14.) Rusty Axe
15.) Pickax of Despair

Iconic to Alex:

16.) Ceremonial Dagger

When I list the individual rounds, I'll list everyone who has used each weapon. So, if you want to vote for the chainsaw because of how Harry wields it (which is different than how the Ashfield boys and Alex do it), that's completely fine.

IDX
11-06-2009, 03:37 AM
Well, Alex's isn't technically a chainsaw. It's a circular saw :D!

But as for Harry and James, I don't know if just giving it to one of them would be fair because they both have it whether or not they hold it differently :/.

Also, didn't know the spray can was an alien weapon.

Neg
11-06-2009, 04:46 AM
I'm not giving it to either of them, per se. Chainsaw will be an entry and you can choose to vote for it for whatever reason/user you want. Lumping in Alex's circular saw is practical and logical, imo.

I thought about the spray for a while, and while obviously it is practical to lump it into alien weaponry, it works exactly the same way that Harry's Hyper Blaster does with increasing colors and power levels as determined by the number of stars you get for clearing consecutive games.

Also remember that the UFO ending is not in the original release of the game, it was added for the greatest hits version. I'd imagine if they had originally put it in, they probably would have tied it to unlocking the spray can.

I originally had Heather's beams lumped into Alien Weaponry too, but I felt while they are beams, they are too tightly connected to her specifically to not be an individual entry. Beam Saber could be lumped in, I suppose.

I'm way open to input and if we do lump either (or both) of those in, we can add more weapons. Up to you guys, this is just my first crack at it.

Arigeitsu159
11-06-2009, 06:20 AM

I don't have a Wii so I plan on getting the PS2 version, though it's too bad it comes out 2 months after the Wii version.

The game received a 8.0 in Nintendo Power where they basically say that while it's one of the most immersive experiences on the Wii, it never truly delivers the scares. The points of tension are supposed to be the chase scenes but they leave something to be desired. The lacking suspense leaves the puzzles to shine. NP describes them as creative and varied, yet never obtuse. They also speak of a twist ending.

Yeah, suddenly I'm glad I did choose the Wii version.

They're releasing the PS2 version two months after the Wii version...? I thought they were releasing all version of the game on the same day...

I'll be getting the Wii version anyway, but that's kind of retarded to delay the other console versions.

I'm just going by what it says on Amazon. For the Wii it says December 8, 2009 and for PS2 it says January 31, 2010.

Wii for me, I've had it pre-ordered for months now.

Oh... I wasn't doubting you at all... I just thought it was silly for Konami not to release all versions on the same day.

I told Allen, all these delays are making me worry. Still, Avi says it got a good score.

Soooo, are we going to wait on playing it to be fair to our Wii-less brothers (and sister)?

Hah! Don't worry about me. I'll have Spirit Tracks to tide me over until January. Plus I still haven't replayed SH2 since I repurchased it recently. I plan on playing it all in the dark this time for fun.

Might want to pick this up while you're waiting. Sounds pretty cool, so far.

I'll probably wait. I plan on buying it when it comes out, but I'll have to play through New Super Mario Bros Wii and Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles. So, I can put this SH:SM on hold until you guys are playing.

Neg

I'm for waiting. I'm going to play Apollo Justice and then probably hunt for extras in Uncharted or Bioshock or something like that.

I can totally wait. Like I told Avi, I wait to play stuff ALL THE TIME.

We're cooler than that, yo.

Today is probably the worst day Rumble-wise EVAR. Phantom Train lost. Woodside/Blue Creek, and Lakeside Amusement Park.

I love 4, but for some reason, the fact that it just pulled off 100% survival into the next round, grinds my gears~ such is life.

How did you choose which two areas would get paired together in a rumble?

The list randomizer.

Arigeitsu159

Well, I imagine the results would have been different if they had been put in some other random pairing. It really is a luck of the pairing which one will move onto the next round.
