You know... I just realized I've only seen two of the five endings available in the original Silent Hill game...

I guess I'll be going back to complete this game since I technically didn't do it when I played the first time.

The plus endings just add a scene to it. This scene isn't canon, based on the events of 3. Also, the bad endings aren't canon because 3 exists at all.

I never went back for them all either. 3 was the first I ever completed thoroughly. I did it for the clothes.

Started playing the first Silent Hill last night... man, it's hard to believe how far we've come in graphics since the PS1 days. I LOL'ed at how primitive the graphics look.

There was a EU-only Silent Hill Collection that collects I think 2-4 for PS2. Which was itself a very gimped and very LE version of the (of course) JP-only "Complete Set".

One of my friends still works at GS so I canl ask him if he heard anything similar.. I'd love to finally get a proper collected version.

I checked Gamestop's site for the PS2 and PSP versions and it seems it doesn't matter which version you reserve, you get the soundtrack. So, I say, take your pick doom. :D

I was talking to Kei about this, since I pre-ordered from Amazon a few weeks/months ago. Either I get this game about $10 dollars cheaper or cancel and get it 7 dollars expensive? In total 17 dollars difference for a soundtrack. Don't get me wrong I'd like to get the soundtrack but I think I'm going to have to go soundtrack-less. :/ sucks! Well, I guess it depends on how you want the soundtrack. ;) You can either get the physical real deal and spend the money, or just wait until someone posts the soundtrack here. I'm sort of on the fence about what to do, although I'm a little more inclined not really reserve it just for the soundtrack.

I've always been very selective about what tracks I download for any Silent Hill game. I normally only download songs I actually like rather than the whole album. With that being said, I may just download them when someone rips it and makes it available on the forums.

The first and only time I ever bought anything from Gamestop was when I bought Mega Man Anniversary Collection. Instead of giving me a sealed copy of the game, they just took the case I gave them (the one I picked up off the shelf), got the game out of a CD cover slip and placed inside the case. I was like "wth?". I inspected the disc carefully to make sure there was nothing wrong with it though. Still found that odd and somewhat cheap on their part.

Yeah I had a bad experiance with them a few years ago I pre-ordered KoF 2006, when I went to pick it up, not only did I not get my Another Day DVD that comes with the pre-order the guy was a douche to me only because the guy before me was being loud with him, and I guess he needed to take it out on other people... But yeah fuck that I tell 'em give me a sealed copy or it's a no go for me, they usually do give the sealed copy, but times they don't it's peace out I'm not buying a new opened game. I can do the entire "Promise" song, but I don't have the right software to record to the computer :(. Because it's just me (and there's 3 different guitars playing), I have to record each piece individually for it to sound alright.

I even play some parts differently just because I thought it would sound better.

Unless you don't mind a shitty recording through a mic on my mp3 player, then I can play the main riff and the melodic solo before what I think is the chorus. But I would still prefer having it all done and then put onto just one track.

I've been reading into them recently out of sheer curiosity, and they seem like complete mindfuckery and genuinely twisted stories. The gameplay seems sort of meh from the youtube vids I've seen. And it seems guaranteed to give you freaky ass nightmares.

I played FEAR and Bioshock and was unable to finish them because they just creeped me out too much. Do you guys like playing the Silent Hill games because you all love the feel of intense horror movies? Is the story better than what I've read about? Based on the videos I've seen, playing these games seem like a short trip to the insane asylum!

Yet I'm still slightly tempted to play them because it'll scare the shit out of my housemates. Hmm...

If you haven't played the games, then you can't even really grasp what you want to know about them. Only by experiencing it for yourself will you truly know what Silent Hill is all about.

I like them because they present protagonists that are morally ambiguous and who achieve endings based on/tailored to the consequences of the actions they take.

I like that Silent Hill is seemingly based off of the perceptions and experiences of each person who visits it. I like it's....function, but to explain that would be the ultimate spoiler.

I like the sustained creepiness of the environments and how they are chosen specifically for each protagonist.

That's the short of it.

Ooh... tell me. What is its function? I ask because I will never end up playing these games. Would be too many sleepless nights.

Play the second one then. It's the least scary of them.

I found the "The Room" to be quite scary for me...

For Alessa:

Alessa distorts the town into its nightmare form in order to punish those who brought about her death. Her mother Dahlia burned her in a ritual in order to summon/awaken Sammael. Dr. Kauffman and others were involved in the cult that wished to bring about his return. Alessa ends up being reincarnated/seperated into two forms, when a child is born after Sammael's defeat. This child is named Cheryl and taken home by Harry, the protagonist of the first game. She is renamed Heather in order to protect her from her past/origin, but it doesn't take long for her to end up in Silent Hill after the cult has Harry killed. She is to be the mother of a reborn god, but she takes care of that in pretty short order.

So, for Alessa, the town is a manifestation of retribution and punishment. This is made even more clear in the movie's adaptation, imo.

For James:

Silent Hill in general, and Pyramid Head in specific are the instruments by which James punishes himself for killing his wife.

For Walter/Henry:

Silent Hill is the place where Walter was imprisoned and indoctrinated by a subset of the cult. Their beliefs laid the framework by which he attempts to achieve his ends of resurrecting/reuniting with his mother. He believes Henry's apartment in Ashfield to be his mother and Henry is both the final victim of the ritual killing spree he engages in, as well as the one who must stop him.

Silent Hill is the origin of Walter as we come to know him, and the source of his hope for finding peace in reunion.

For Alex:

Alex is a member of one of the four founding families of Shepard's Glen, a town neighboring Silent Hill. These founders hoped to keep evil at bay by perpetuating a heritage of sacrifice and clandestine rituals. When Alex's father fails to be able to provide his sacrifice, the families attempt to return to Silent Hill to resurrect the old religion.

For Alex, Silent Hill represents the heritage that defines him and his opportunity to accept or reject it.

For Travis:

Silent Hill is the place where Travis's destiny is married to that of Alessa when he 'saves' her from the fire Dahlia set when she sacrificed her. In addition to Travis visiting places significant to the psychological development of Alessa, Travis visits the final resting places of his parents, and (possibly, depending on the ending you are discussing) realizes that he has set up shop in Silent Hill. His business is voyeurism and murder, if you're curious.

Silent Hill is the place of Travis's origins as much as Alessa's. It is where his current psyche was birthed and his victims lives end.

The rest of you guys feel free to correct/expound on these. This is just off the top of my head.

If you really want to be scared the shit out of, then play the Fatal Frame/Project Zero games. Silent Hill is pretty creepy and eerie, but for me, Fatal Frame is pure terror!

Heh. No way I'm selling mine considering it was the Collector's Edition. I'll just have two copies... just like I have three copies of RE4 (Gamecube, PS2, and Wii).

They said it's only slated for a Japanese release at the moment. However, it seems probable we'll get it too considering they also did the scenes in English (since Patricia said she recorded scenes for this "new" episode). However, if I've learned anything from KH2:FM, just because it's been dubbed for English audience, doesn't mean we'll definitely get it.

If the game is using motion sensors of the PS3 controller... it seems most likely this will be another disc release. :P

I'll still buy it anyway...

My second playthrough of Homecoming was when I noticed that the trucker was Travis. Me and a friend looked at pictures and everything. Even the type and color of his semi. I was like "Hell ya! It's Travis!"

I don't remember that at all... and I played through the game at least 7 or 8 times... (to get all the unlockables and endings).

A walkthrough guy on youtube said it was Travis. Of course, this individual said a number of dopey things, so I'm not taking his word as golden.

Aren't the good endings usually the "true" endings?

All of 2's endings seem really plausible--they did a good job of covering logical bases. The original's canon ending is Good (not Good+). Beyond that, they are up in the air (excluding UFO endings) until a new game proves otherwise.

I don't know. He looks older in Homecoming but they didn't really say when Homecoming took place. But I thought think Homecoming took place after Origins myself. Not sure about anyone else though.

4 makes 2 so very mushy, now that I recall that Frank says James and Mary never came back from Silent Hill. So, does that mean that her entire illness took place in Silent Hill (via a 1408 scenario, where they THINK they got out, but never did), or perhaps that they just didn't return to Ashfield.

It would probably be only the 5 of us, but I don't mind doing the work for 5 people when it's us 5. I'll even personally PM every person who's a part of the social group.

I was thinking about doing locations first, obviously. If you guys are interested in this idea, I'll work out the number so it's a good number for a rumble. Separating misty world locations and nightmares sides, and I'm sure I can fudge if I have to by using outside locations.

If this flies and we get into other topics, I'd ask someone more familiar with the music to do the music edition. And, anyone interested in doing the work for any of the other possible editions can definitely do them.

No pressure, and if it flops eventually, it flops.

Yeah a year ago or so I was suppose to take final fantasy IV and the fighters rumble... But I never got confirmation and all that work I did got ereased when my comp messed up. :(

Locations rumble will have 64 entries and will be done double bracket style like the VI rumble. Two rounds to vote on in each post. Voting window will be 2-3 days, as gaged by activity. Nothing fancy, just straight up majority wins. I'll vote and ties will be decided by coin toss, no past win/loss ratio stuff.

I'm guessing that Locations and Music will be the biggest editions, and we'll have a number of smaller ones in between that we can rip off fairly fast. Some ideas I had:

Non-Pyramid Head enemies/bosses ;)
Non-Protagonist Characters
Weapons
Puzzles

We could do a tiny, tiny Protagonist rumble if more than us 5 are voting, since that'd probably be horribly biased. Could do 8 by including Eileen and Elle, since they can slide in on technicalities (they fight/solve puzzles, as opposed to a certain creature of wish-fulfillment).

Here's the list of locations. I ended up with 62 because I was collapsing across somethings that aren't super different, like Brookhaven and its nightmare side in 2, and Brookhaven in 3 which isn't super different from 2 (Nightmare Brookhaven 3, on the other hand, soooo deserves its place). So, I put those back in just to fill out.

This means if you want to suggest places I've forgotten, you totally have the room to. We can even collapse across the Streets of Silent Hill in some cases. There's fudging to be done to our advantage. I'd love to see smaller places get their due, even if their day in the sun is just the first round they are in, so don't fret about including anything that strikes your fancy.
